Abstract:Thin-film solar cells with CuIn$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$Se$_2$ (CIGS) absorber are still far below their efficiency limit, although lab cells reach already 19.9%. One important aspect is the homogeneity of the alloy. Large-scale simulations combining Monte Carlo and density functional calculations show that two phases coexist in thermal equilibrium below room temperature. Only at higher temperatures, CIGS becomes more and more a homogeneous alloy. A larger degree of inhomogeneity for Ga-rich CIGS persists over a wide temperature range, which may contribute to the low observed efficiency of Ga-rich CIGS solar cells.

Abstract:Solute segregation at the interface between the aluminum (Al) matrix and the Ω ( Al2Cu ) phase decreases the interfacial energy, impedes the coarsening of precipitates, and enhances the thermal stability of such precipitates. In this study, we employ density functional theory to systematically calculate solute segregation energies of 42 solute elements at the coherent and semi-coherent interfaces between the two phases, as well as mixing energies of these elements within the Al and Cu sublattices of the Ω phase. Using correlation analysis and machine learning methods, we establish the relationship between the solute segregation energy and 20 selected atomic descriptors. Metalloid and late transition metal elements are predicted as potential candidates for enhancing the thermal stability of Al-Cu alloys. We observe that the solute segregation energy at the interfacial site of the semi-coherent interface correlates with the atomic size of solute atoms and their solubilities within the Ω phase. The developed machine learning models exhibit the potential to predict solute segregation energies at various sites of the coherent and semi-coherent interfaces. Overall, our study provides valuable insights into the stabilizing potential of individual elements at the Ω /Al interface in Al-Cu alloys.

Abstract:The surface composition of an alloying system has an important impact on its catalytic and chemical properties. The segregation behavior of 3d, 4d and 5d transition metals on an Ni(111) surface has been investigated by performing first-principles calculations in the framework of density-functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation for the exchange-correlation functional. Our calculated surface segregation energies are in good agreement with the experimental data as well as with previous calculated results. Most importantly, we have made an attempt to correlate the surface segregation behavior with the surface energy difference between the alloying (solute) metal and the host metal, the elastic energy release, and the heat of solution of the alloying metal in the host metal. By doing so, we not only overcome the difficulties that empirical models encounter, but also clearly identify the importance of each contribution to the segregation behavior of an alloying metal. The present study provides valuable insight into the surface segregation behavior of solute atoms in alloying systems.

Abstract:The segregation of alien solute atoms at grain boundaries (GBs) in nanocrystalline materials can dramatically affect their macroscopic properties. As important solutes in Al alloys, Mg and Cu atoms have been experimentally observed to segregate at GBs, which would render a significant impact on the material. In this work, first-principles calculations were used to conduct a systematic and comprehensive investigation to reveal the segregation behavior of Mg and Cu atoms at Al Σ5 (310) and Σ9 (221) GBs and its effect on GB properties. The negative segregation energy demonstrates that both Mg and Cu have a strong tendency to segregate to the Al GBs. Moreover, the segregation of Mg and Cu atoms can reduce the GB energy, indicating an increased thermodynamic stability of the GBs. Mechanical properties are explored by a combination of canonical Griffith fracture model with ab-initio tensile test method. Results reveal that the doped Mg will embrittle both GBs due to the elongation of interatomic bonds and depletion of charge density across the GBs. Contrarily, the segregated Cu contributes greatly to enhancing the GB strength by creating strong Cu-Al bonds with surrounding Al at GBs. Besides, the increased tensile separation displacement of GBs with Cu segregation also suggests an improved resistance to fracture, especially the Σ9 (221) GB. This work provides a theoretical understanding for the changes in microscopic properties of Al GBs caused by Mg and Cu segregation from an atomic and electronic level.

Abstract:Solute segregation at the Si 2 Hf/Al interface of an Al-Si-Cu-Hf alloy was investigated by combining high angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Density gradient segregation of Cu atoms was observed at the habit plane of the nanobelt-like Si 2 Hf phase, with the Cu concentrations gradually increasing to the Si 2 Hf/Al interface. This gradient segregation of Cu is found to be beneficial for decreasing both the strain and interfacial energies and thereby promoting the stabilization of the Si 2 Hf precipitates during heat treatment. This study provides an insight into the enhanced stability of Si 2 Hf precipitates in Al-Si-Cu-Hf alloy.

Abstract:In 6000-series Al-Mg-Si alloys, Zn is commonly added to enhance the aging response for improved properties. However, the segregation of Zn to interfaces and its interaction mechanisms with strengthening phases remain unclear. Combining experiments and theoretical calculations, we systematically investigated Zn segregation behavior at the β″/Al interfaces in Al-Mg-Si alloys. Using a modified β″-Mg5Al2Si4 model, we determined that the interface (100)β″//(130)Al has a slightly smaller formation energy of 1.06 kJ/mol, while (001)β″//(3¯20)Al has a relatively smaller interfacial energy of 116 mJ/m2. HAADF-STEM analysis revealed these interfacial morphologies and atomic distributions, showing that Zn atoms not only enter the β″ phase but are also inclined to segregate at the interfaces by occupying the Si3/Al sites. Furthermore, the stability of the β″/Al interfaces and the Zn segregation behavior are well explained at the atomic scale, with calculations showing that stronger hybridization between Zn-3d and Si-3s orbitals facilitates Zn segregation at the interfaces.

Abstract:The phase diagrams of continuous binary nanoalloys are important in providing guidance for material designs and industrial applications. However, experimental determination of the nano-phase diagram is scarce since calorimetric measurements remain quite challenging at the nanoscale. Based on the size-dependent cohesive energy model, we developed a unified nano-thermodynamic model to investigate the effects of the size, shape, and segregation on the phase diagrams of continuous binary nanoalloys. The liquidus/solidus dropped in temperature, two-phase zone was narrowed, and the degree of surface segregation decreased with decrease in the size or increase in the shape factor. The congruent melting point of Cu-Au nanoalloys with and without segregation is linearly shifted to higher Au component and lower temperature with decreasing size or increasing shape factor. By reviewing surface segregated element of different binary nanoalloys, two segregation rules based on the solid surface energy and atomic size have been identified. Moreover, the established model can be employed to describe other physicochemical properties of nanoalloys, e.g. the cohesive energy, catalytic activation energy, and order-disorder transition temperature, and the validity is supported by available other theoretical prediction, experimental data and molecular dynamic simulations results. This will help the experimentalists by guiding them in their attempts to design bimetallic nanocrystals with the desired properties.

Abstract:Journal of Applied Physics, Volume 131, Issue 21, June 2022. Phase diagram calculations are performed for incoherent and coherent mixtures of an [math] (InAsSb) ternary alloy, which is an important material for the applications to infrared detector technology. Our calculations are based on the cluster expansion approach and Monte Carlo simulations combined with first-principles total energy calculations in the framework of density functional theory with Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof (PBE) and Heyd–Scuseria–Ernzerhof (HSE) exchange-correlation functionals. Because of a lattice mismatch ([math]7%) between InAs and InSb, coherency strain plays an important role for the phase stability of the InAsSb alloys. The alloys without the coherency strain (incoherent mixtures) show a miscibility gap with the critical temperature at [math]700 K with 42% (45%) Sb concentration in PBE (HSE), which is in good agreement with the experimentally determined equilibrium miscibility gap temperature. The alloys with the coherency strain (coherent mixtures) show several ground states whose structures are short period superlattices along the [201] direction. The critical temperature is [math]200 K with 50% Sb concentration in both PBE and HSE, which is reduced by [math]500 K compared to that of incoherent mixtures. This reduction of the critical temperature is consistent with the experimental observation where the homogeneous InAsSb alloy continues to grow inside the empirical miscibility gap.

Abstract:Comprehending the interfacial structures and energetics of interfaces between γ-TiAl and α 2 -Ti 3 Al phase is critical to understanding the stabilities of the binary-phase TiAl-Ti 3 Al alloy. Here a comprehensive first-principles investigation is reported on the structures and energetic properties of γ-TiAl(111)/α 2 -Ti 3 Al(0001) interfaces with 19 segregated transition metals considered. The results indicate that all considered atoms have a tendency to segregate at the interface. The interfacial strength enhancement occurs after V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Nb, Mo, Tc, Ru segregated in TiAl, Ag segregated in Ti 3 Al, and almost all solute atoms can improve interface stability. Compared with the pure interface, the bonding between the segregated atoms and the surrounding atoms is stronger at the interface after V or Nb segregation, while the bonding between Cd and the surrounding atoms is weaker. Our calculations provide the necessary interfacial structures and energetics for predicting the stabilities of binary TiAl alloy.

Abstract:The composition- and temperature-dependent liquid structures in eight Alrich-Cu binary alloys (from hypoeutectic Al93Cu7 to hypereutectic Al70Cu30) have been experimentally and computationally studied by x-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. The remarkable agreements of structure factors for all liquid Alrich-Cu alloys obtained from high-temperature high-energy XRD measurements and AIMD simulations have been achieved, which consolidates the analyses of structural evolutions in Alrich-Cu liquids during the cooling processing by AIMD simulations. The heat capacity of liquid Alrich-Cu alloys continuously increases and presents no abnormal peak when reducing the temperature, which differs from the reported prediction for 55-atom Alrich-Cu nanoliquids. The diffusivities of Al and Cu undergo an increasing deviation from Arrhenius behavior by tuning Cu concentration from 7 to 30 atomic percentages, correlated to the local ordering in these liquids by means of coordination number, bond-angle distribution, Honeycutt-Andersen index, bond-orientational order and Voronoi tessellation analyses. Upon cooling, the microstructure of the liquid Alrich-Cu alloys inclines to form Al2Cu crystal-like local atomic ordering, especially in the hypereutectic liquids. The favorable short-range ordering between Cu and Al atoms could cause the non-Arrhenius diffusion behavior.
The origins of segregation behaviors of solute atoms and their effect on the strength of α-Al//θ'-Al2Cu interfaces in Al-Cu alloys

Abstract:In many alloy systems, the segregation and strengthening of the solute atoms are caused by mechanical and chemical contributions. To uncover the origins of segregation behaviors and strengthening behaviors of the solute atoms Cd, Si, Sc and Zr at (001)α-Al//(001)θ' and (010)α-Al//(010)θ' interfaces, first-principles calculations were conducted. Results show that the chemical contribution primarily dominates the oscillatory segregation behaviors of Cd, Si, Sc and Zr on the Al matrix side. The oscillatory segregation behaviors of Cd, Si, Sc and Zr on the θ' side are mainly governed by both chemical and mechanical contributions. The segregation tendency of Cd at the (001)α-Al//(001)θ' interface (or (010)α-Al//(010)θ' interface) throughout the platelets is small (or strong) because the charge accumulation between Cd and the host atoms is weak (or significant). The segregation trend of Sc (or Zr) on the Al matrix side at the (001)α-Al//(001)θ' and (010)α-Al//(010)θ' interfaces is strong, which is attributed to significant charge accumulation between Sc (or Zr) and the host atoms. Si exhibits a favorable segregation tendency on the θ' side at both the (001)α-Al//(001)θ' and (010)α-Al//(010)θ' interfaces, which is ascribed to significant charge accumulation between Si and the host atoms. With the increase of Si, Sc and Zr coverage, the segregation tendencies of Si, Sc and Zr enhance. The segregation tendency of Cd decreases with the increase of Cd coverage. The first-principles tensile test for the interface was conducted. The work of dislocation emission was computed. Results show that the strengthening effects of solute atoms on the interface are primarily dominated by the chemical contribution. Sc (or Zr) segregation leads to an increase in the strength of the interface, which is majorly attributed to a strong electronic interaction between Sc (or Zr) and the host atoms. Cd segregation causes a weakening effect on the interface because of the weak electronic interaction between Cd and the host atoms. The ductility of the (001)α-Al//(001)θ' interface with the Sc (or Zr) is more significant than that with the Cd (or Si). This work provides a strategy for improving the mechanical properties of the Al-Cu alloys.

Abstract:Via equidistance scaling method, several parts of the segregated domains from granular interior to grain boundary are identified. Based on this method, the model of nano-crystalline (NC) Cu-Ag alloy with gradient segregation is constructed. The issue how the solute concentration (SC) distribution is more conducive to the strength enhancement is explored by molecular dynamic (MD) simulation. The simulation results reveal that sample with higher intra-granular SC possess more dislocation activities, thinner amorphous inter-granular films (AIFs), more homogeneous deformation and higher flow stress at plastic stage. The results turn the opposite way in sample with higher SC nearby grain boundary. Meanwhile, the observed phase transition is analyzed during the deformation progress.
Study of microstructure and optical absorption properties of Cu(In,Ga,Al)Se2 powders

Abstract:CuInxGayAl1-x-ySe2 powders were prepared using a solvothermal reaction technique in ethylenediamine at 290 degrees C for 20 hours. The microstructure and optical absorption properties of the powders were investigated by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS and UV-Vis-NIR spectra. The results indicated that the Al atom was successfully incorporated into the CuInxGa1-xSe2 lattices, and Al doping had a significant effect on the microstructure, especially at the (112) crystal orientation. It was found that the peak of (112) shifted obviously to higher 2 values with the increasing aluminum content. Transmission electron microscope observation revealed that the size of the CuInxGayAl1-x-ySe2 nanoparticles could be adjusted by varying the stoichiometric ratio of the In, Ga and Al, and the proper Al incorporation could reduce the density of the stacking faults and nanotwins in the CuInxGayAl1-x-ySe2 materials. XRD analysis indicated that the Al incorporation could effectively substitute In and Ga atoms. Finally, the band gap was obtained by UV-Vis-NIR spectra, and the results implied that the optical absorption value decreased and optical band gap increased significantly with the incorporation of Al, and it is close to the optimal band gap (1.37 eV) of solar cells when the stoichiometric ratio of the Al was between 0.2 and 0.3.

Abstract:Local segregation in Cu-In precursors and its effects on the element distribution and microstructures of selenized CuInSe2 thin films were investigated. Cu-In precursors with an ideal total mole ratio of Cu to In of 0.92 were prepared by middle frequency alternating current magnetron sputtering with Cu-In alloy target, then CuInSe2 absorbers for solar cells were formed by selenization process in selenium atmosphere. Scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscope were used respectively to observe the surface morphologies and determine the compositions of both Cu-In precursors and CuInSe2 thin films. Their microstructures were characterized by X-ray diffractometry and Raman spectroscope. The results show that Cu-In precursors are mainly composed of Cu11In9 phase with In-rich solid solution. Stoichiometric CuInSe2 thin films with a homogeneous element distribution and single chalcopyrite phase can be synthesized from a segregated Cu-In precursor film with an ideal total mole ratio of Cu to In of 0.92. CuInSe2 thin film shows P-type conductivity and its resistivity reaches 1.2×103 Θ·cm.
Temperature effects on the impurity segregation in diluted metallic alloys

Abstract:The impurity segregation in diluted transition-metal bimetallic alloys is a subject of study in many fields of interest and still deserves more understanding. Using a tight-binding model for the case of a single substitutional metal impurity the segregation is investigated analysing the segregation energy. Different impurity positions are considered from the (001) top surface to a number of planes below it on a simple cubic lattice. With only one orbital per site, the impurity potentials are determined in order to satisfy charge neutrality through the Friedel sum rule. In particular, our attention will be mainly directed to the substitutional impurity located in the surface and in the bulk. Temperature effects are considered through the Sommerfeld Expansion. Interesting effects on the segregation energy are pointed out such as the appearance of a quantum interference on the electronic states due to the surface itself. The obtained trend of the segregation energy profile is in good agreement with the surface concentration experimental data.

Abstract:Cu-In precursor films with a Cu/In atomic ratio approaching 1 were prepared using middle frequency A.C. magnetron sputtering with a Cu-In alloy target to investigate local agglomeration in Cu-In alloy layers and its effects on the element distributions and microstructure of selenized CuInSe2 (CIS) films. CIS absorbers for solar cells were then formed by the selenization process in a selenium atmosphere. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis were used to observe the surface morphologies and to determine the compositions of both the Cu-In precursor films and the CIS films. Their microstructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The results show that the Cu-In alloy films are mainly composed of a Cu11In9 phase with an in-rich solid solution appearing as particles in the films. Stoichiometric CIS film can be synthesized with a homogeneous element distribution and a single chalcopyrite phase from the Cu-In precursor film with a Cu/In atomic ratio of 1. The CIS film exhibits p-type conduction and has a resistivity reaching 1.2 kΩ·cm.

Abstract:Alloying with various compositions is an efficient method to tailor the optoelectronic properties of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). However, the composition distribution in the monolayer of TMDs alloys lacks detailed investigation. Here, by exploring scanning Auger electron spectroscopy, we investigate the composition distribution in MoS2(1−x)Se2x monolayers with high spatial resolution. Our results demonstrate that inhomogeneous composition distribution exists not only among different nanosheets on a substrate but also within individual nanosheets. Our study would be helpful to develop new methods for controllable synthesis of TMDs alloys and other 2D materials.

Abstract:<p>The competition between precipitation and segregation of Sc and its effects on thermal stability of Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloys were investigated in this paper. Al-Cu-Mg-Ag-Sc has good thermal stability due to the precipitation of Al<sub>3</sub>Sc phases, but no segregation of Sc atoms on the interface of the Ω phases and the transformed θ' phases. Al-Cu-Mg-Ag-Si-Sc alloy has the best thermal stability due to Sc atoms segregate to the θ' phase thus inhibit the growth of the θ' phase.</p>

Abstract:Influence of temperature distribution during fabricating CuInSe 2 (CIS) thin films by post-sputtering selenization in the quasi-closed container has been studied through simulation and experiments. The morphology of fabricated thin films in the different container (quartz, graphite) presented nearly identical pattern to our simulated temperature distribution map. In-rich and Cu-rich metallic precursors were selenized separately with quartz container, regarding to its significant temperature gradient, for further investigation of the selenide binaries. In-Se binaries in the In-rich CIS thin film were studied carefully, revealing the phase transformation between indium selenides and CIS with Cu-Se binaries. Indium enrichment on the surface in the Cu-rich thin film was noticed and ascribed to both the differences in diffusion coefficients of alloys and deposition process of the precursors. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Chemical segregations at grain boundaries (GBs) have been broadly investigated in Al alloys. However, there are limited experimental evidence demonstrating the dependence of solute segregation on GB characteristics. Here, we quantified solute segregation at GBs in nanocrystalline Al-1Mg (at.%) alloy by combining energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and automated crystallographic indexing and orientation mapping. The dependence of solute segregation on the grain boundary misorientation angle is analyzed. Due to their higher excess free volume, high angle grain boundaries contain more Mg solutes than the low angle grain boundaries. Furthermore, coherent twin boundaries (CTBs) exhibit low solute segregation. However, incoherent twin boundaries (ITBs) display greater solute concentration. The different solute segregation behavior between CTBs and ITBs originates from their grain boundary structure. The solute segregation behavior reported here may shed light on the GB engineering of Al alloys.
