Abstract:ABSTRACT Introduction: Aerobic gymnastics is a sport that involves a sense of beauty, rhythm and dance, with high artistic expressiveness, characteristics that have favored a strong population adherence. It is believed that the specific flexibility exercise can add a greater visual impact to their artistic movements, raising their competitive performance. Objective: Verify the impacts of lower limb flexibility exercise on the performance of aerobics athletes. Methods: Six aerobics athletes were selected to perform an 8-week experiment, adopting the PNF methodology for training. The impacts on lower limb flexibility were measured before and after the experiment, these data were analyzed and studied statistically. Results: The results of the long jump in the physical quality index of the athletes increased by 0.1209 m; the added value in the two-minute, 10-m backstroke test was 1.46. The movement performance indexes showed expressive increases: flexion increased by 2.62; right angle support increased by 0.78; split leg jump increased by 1.95; standing jump with eyes closed and the foot balance quality index was 4.63. Conclusion: Lower limb flexibility exercise can positively impact the performance of aerobic gymnastics athletes. Level of evidence II; Therapeutic studies - investigation of treatment outcomes.

Abstract:The stretching exercises, flexibility ability, have a negative acute effect on maximal strength and power. For our knowledge, there aren't studies that confirm this interference chronically. The aim of this study was to verify the influence of flexibility training immediately before of power training, jumps and sprints, in adults who have practiced the Rhythmic gymnastics (GR), Artistic gymnastics (GA) and/or Dance (D) for at least 5 years. The participants were divided into two groups: Strength/Power group (GF/P) and Flexibility plus Strength/Power group (GF-F/P). Vertical jump and sprint tests were performed before, and after 8 weeks of intervention. The data were collected through of MyJump2 and MySprint apps. Both of the groups demonstrated similar increases on jump and sprint parameters (power), suggesting that there is not a negative interference on this ability, even when flexibility is applied before strength/power training.
Effect of plyometric training on dynamic leg strength and jumping performance in rhythmic gymnastics: A preliminary study

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Reactive performance is an important component of rhythmic gymnastics. So far, it is unclear whether additional plyometric training in female gymnasts shows an increase in performance. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to examine the effect of additional plyometric training in rhythmic gymnastics on the reactive jumping performance and strength of the lower leg muscles. METHODS: Fifteen rhythmic gymnasts (age: 12.3 ± 2.6 years, height: 1.47 ± 0.12 m, body weight: 37.3 ± 9.3 kg, BMI: 16.7 ± 2.1 kg*m-2; competition level: national and international championships, Tanner stages I–III) participated in the study. The athletes were assigned to an experimental (EG) and a control group (CG). The EG performed plyometric exercises three times per week in addition to the regular training. Before and after six weeks of training the reactive jump performance, the work of dorsi flexors and plantar flexors performed during isokinetic plantarflexion, as well as the performance in two sport-specific tests were measured. RESULTS: In contrast to the CG, in the EG the jump height (pre: 24.8; post: 27.25 cm; p< 0.05) and the reactive-strength-index (pre: 1.01; post: 1.19; p< 0.01) increased significantly. The EG achieved significant improvements in the counter movement jump test (pre: 27.0 cm; post: 31.5 cm; p< 0.01) and in the sport specific double rope jump test (jumps per minute, pre: 18.0; post: 23.0; p< 0.01). Furthermore, a significant increase in work performed during plantarflexion was found in the EG for the right leg (pre: 24.9 J; post: 29.7 J; p< 0.01) and a tendency to increase for the left leg (pre: 26.4 J; post: 37.7 J; p= 0.05). CONCLUSION: Both reactive strength and dynamic force can be efficiently increased by plyometric training. It may be recommended to include plyometric exercises in the training regime of rhythmic gymnasts.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Introduction: Ballroom dance has evolved from a simple self-taught part of folklore to a technical, performative, and artistic competitive dance called the International Standard Dance. Objective: Study the effects of special lower limb strength training on the physical stability of dancers. Methods: 20 volunteers, students of a university specialized in dance, were divided into experimental and control groups, undergoing training of 30 minutes daily, 3 times a week, for 3 months. The control group followed the daily training, while the experimental group received special lower limb strength training. The relevant physical data measured before and after the intervention were statistically analyzed. Results: Compared to the control group, there was a significant difference in the athletes of the experimental group (P<0.05). The experimental group's lower limb strength and special skills were significantly improved. Conclusion: The lower extremity strength training protocol significantly improved the dancers’ muscle strength, proportionally increasing the stability of the sports skills. Abstract:ABSTRACT Introduction: For over 100 years, elastic band training has been used in fitness training, including mainly male physical strength training, female body sculpting training, and stimulation of stages in child development. Objective: Verify the impacts of elastic band training on lower limb strength in aerobic gymnastics athletes. Methods: The method of literary data, expert interview, and logical analysis were adopted. Mainly through the logical analysis method, 20 aerobics athletes in a rhythmic gymnastics club were selected as volunteers for the experiment. They were randomly divided into the experimental and control groups and then performed a jump test for 14 weeks, involving three steps. Results: It was found that before the experiment, the athletes in the experimental group performed slightly better in the three-step approach and level 1 straight step jump than the control group. Elastic band training significantly improved trunk strength and lower limb strength. Conclusions: Factors affecting the selection of lower body strength training content for aerobic gymnastics athletes are: physical factors, training cycle factors, multi-age factors, and coaches’ factors. Abstract:Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the effects of a 6-week fast stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) plyometric training programme on both fast and slow SSC strength qualities in pre-teen rhythmic gymnasts. Methods: Twenty-two female gymnasts, aged 10.8 ± 1.2 years, were divided into an experimental group (EG, n = 11) and a control group (CG, n = 11). Both groups underwent a series of tests such as 10/5 repeated jump and the countermovement jump before and after the 6-week plyometric intervention programme. All participants remained in their regular rhythmic gymnastics training during the intervention period and only EG underwent the fast SSC plyometric training. The plyometric training consists of three exercises focused on achieving a ground contact time of <0.25s. The volume of foot contact was increased after 3 weeks, from 150 to 240 with 30 s rest between sets and 2 min rest between exercises for two times per week. Results: Results showed that EG improved significantly on reactive strength index (RSI) (53.5% ± 46.1%, P < 0.001) and jump height (JH) (8.3% ± 25%, P = 0.018), but not for CG. Furthermore, significant differences were found in RSI ( P = 0.015) and JH ( P = 0.006) between EG and CG at post-test. Conclusions: The study concluded that plyometric training that focuses on fast SSC implemented for 6 weeks on pre-teen gymnasts improves the RSI and JH, which shows that fast SSC exercises enhance the reactive strength and suggest that adaptations from fast SSC training can be transferred to slow SSC capabilities.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Introduction The innovation and development of complex movements in aerobic gymnastics present higher demands for the athletes’ overall qualifications. Objective Analyze the effect of special lower limb strength training on the performance of female gymnasts. Methods Four female gymnasts from sports colleges were selected as research targets. The method is discussed using literature materials, expert interviews, experimental methods, and mathematical statistics. Results There was a significant difference in the athletes’ body composition index before and after training (P<0.05). The exceptional quality of female aerobic gymnastics athletes after the special lower limb strength training was significantly elevated compared with that before the training. Conclusion The strength training method used in this paper significantly improves the individual strength of the lower limbs of female gymnasts. Abstract:ABSTRACT Introduction: Plyometric training consists of a compound of stretching followed by immediate contraction, favoring the elastic properties of the soft tissues and aiming to promote a higher explosive force in the athletes. Objective: Explore the impact of plyometrics on aerobic gymnastics practitioners' explosive force in the lower limbs. Methods: In this experiment, a total of 16 aerobic gymnastics athletes were selected and divided into two groups: the control group and the experimental group. The control group remained with their usual training, while a sport-specific plyometric protocol was added to the experimental group. Results: Composite plyometric training can improve the short-distance running ability of aerobic gymnastics athletes; the effect of running 5m in the start and 10m in the start was statistically evidenced. However, the 20m run had similar results. Conclusion: The explosive power of the lower limbs in different activities is related to the specific training of aerobic gymnastics athletes focused on the muscles corresponding to the activity, showing a significant positive correlation. Abstract:Dance training has developed eclectically to serve the different approaches to dance performance and making; however, there is a discrepancy between the physiological demands of training and dance performance. It is no longer acceptable to train dancers without due regard for physiological concerns if they are to be prepared appropriately to meet the demands of current choreographic work. Research over the last two decades has examined the physical fitness status of professional and student dancers’, but there is still debate about how fit dancers should be. There is a discrepancy in the physical intensity level between training, rehearsal, and performance, and the idea of supplementary fitness training has been debated, albeit untested longitudinally with large groups of dancers. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a one-year dance specific fitness program on undergraduate contemporary dance students undertaking full-time vocational training and to observe any impact the findings may make upon dance pedagogic practices. Results from the pre- and post-screening assessments show that, following the intervention, there was a significant decrease (p<0.05) in mean heart rates across all five stages of the Dance Aerobic Fitness Test (DAFT), indicating improvement in the dancers’ aerobic capabilities. Findings impacted upon the school curriculum, in that the timetable now comprises weekly fitness classes.

The Effects of an Eight-Week Integrated Functional Core and Plyometric Training Program on Young Rhythmic Gymnasts' Explosive Strength

Abstract:Background: Explosive strength is essential for rhythmic gymnasts’ performance. It has been suggested that core stability (CS) and plyometric training can enhance athletes’ explosive strength. Nevertheless, there is some uncertainty about the effects of integrated core and plyometric training (CPT) programs on rhythmic gymnastics (RG) performances. Purpose: to evaluate the effects of an integrated functional CPT program on young rhythmic gymnasts’ explosive strength and jump/leap performance. Method: We recruited 44 young (age = 10.5 ± 1.8 years old; peak height velocity, PHV = 12.2 ± 0.6 years old) female rhythmic gymnasts and randomly allocated them into a control group (CG) and an experimental group (EG). Pre and post-intervention, the explosive strength of both groups was assessed using countermovement jump (CMJ) and single-leg CMJ (SLCMJ) tests, conducted using a force platform, and expert RG judges evaluated their performance of RG-specific jumps. Before the post-test, the EG (n = 23) completed an 8 week functional CPT program based on RG technical requirements. Meanwhile, the participants in the CG (n = 21) received their regular training sessions. Linear mixed model analyses were applied to evaluate the effects of an intra-subject factor (TIME: pre-post) and an inter-subject factor (GROUP: control-experimental) on each dependent variable. When no significant interaction effect was found, Cohen’s d effect size was calculated. Results: After 8 weeks, the EG obtained significantly better results in all variables measured by the CMJ and SLCMJ (p < 0.01) tests. The judges’ scores indicated greater improvements in the EG after the CPT program in the stag and the split leap. Conclusions: An integrated functional CPT program improved explosive strength in a group of young rhythmic gymnasts and had a large impact on aspects of RG-specific performance. Coaches should consider using this CPT to improve RG performance.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Introduction The dancers must have the necessary strength qualities to complete the dance movement techniques and coordinate the body movements, besides giving full capacity of execution to the qualities such as muscular strength, explosive power, and control in accelerated movement. Objective Verify the main muscular morphology of the lower limbs of sports dancers. Methods 24 undergraduate students were selected from a sports school of a university, specialized in sports dance, and divided into three groups for a physical fitness experiment. Results Different training pressures responded with different effects on the thickness of major lower limb muscles. Compared to the thickness of the rectus femoris in the resting state before the experiment, muscle thickness immediately after exercise was significantly increased in the 250 and 300 groups (P<0.05). Conclusion Training at a moderate pressure level - pressure value of 200 mmHg to 250 mmHg - can achieve better results. The presented protocol resulted in a functional improvement of the skeletal muscle. Level of evidence II; Therapeutic studies - investigation of treatment outcomes.

Abstract:Gymnastics is a popular sport that has potential strength, flexibility, and personal growth benefits for athletes. Both static and dynamic balance are developed from a young age and are fundamental to higher-level gymnastics. PURPOSE: To assess the efficacy of a balance training protocol in improving the dynamic balance of young female gymnasts. METHOD: 19 female Junior Olympic (JO) Level 3 gymnasts, ages 6-11, were randomly assigned to the Balance Training (BT) or control groups. The BT group completed a variety of balance exercises during each practice (2x/wk for eight weeks), including one-footed balance, hopping skills, and leaps onto surfaces of varying stability. Gymnasts in the control group continued with their normal gymnastics practices. Gymnasts were tested before training, after week 4, and after week 8 to assess improvements in the Balance Error Scoring System (BESS), Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT), Center of Pressure Path length (COP Path length), and Joint Position Sense (JPS) scores. RESULTS: An improvement in SEBT for the gymnasts’ dominant foot reaching anteriorly (p=0.03) was observed. Otherwise, there were no significant differences between improvements in scores for the control group and the experimental group. CONCLUSION: JO Level 3 gymnasts, who are early in their training and development, demonstrated no additional benefit from twice weekly balance training beyond normally prescribed practice and skills training. While anecdotal evidence suggested a possible acute effect on balance performance immediately following balance exercises, further research is needed.
Game stretching as a modern means of developing the flexibility of 5–6-year-old female gymnasts

Abstract:Purpose: to prove the effectiveness of the technique of game stretching to increase the level of development of flexibility in female gymnasts aged 5-6 years. Material & Methods: the study involved 30 female athletes aged 5-6 years who are engaged in rhythmic gymnastics. According to the results of the initial testing, a group of female gymnasts was divided into control (n=15) and main (n=15), taking into account the absence of significant differences in the indicators of flexibility tests. Both groups of young gymnasts trained in accordance with the curriculum for the Youth Sports School in rhythmic gymnastics (1999). In the training sessions of female athletes of the main group, a specially developed technique of game stretching was included, aimed at developing flexibility. Results: the obtained results of the study give grounds to assert that the proposed methodology, by which female gymnasts of the main group (MG) trained, contributed to a more pronounced (p<0,05; p 0,05), although an improvement in the results in this test was observed in both groups. Conclusions: the results of the study showed the effectiveness of the method of game stretching to increase the level of development of flexibility in female gymnasts 5-6 years old. The technique contributed to a more pronounced (p<0,05; p<0,01) increase in the level of development of flexibility among female athletes of the main group (MG) compared with the results of female gymnasts in the control group (CG). So, in tests T1 "Extension in the knee joints" (cm); T2 "Twisting the stick" (cm); T4 "Gymnastic bridge" (points) significant differences in test scores were found with a probability of 99% at p≤0,01. In tests T3 “Backward bend in lying position” (cm); T5 “Performing splits on the right”, (points) and T6 “Performing splits on the left”, (points) there were also found significant differences in indicators with a probability of 95% at p≤0,05 between the main and control groups. The results obtained allow us to recommend the developed methodology for use in the training process of young gymnasts at the stage of initial training. And test exercises were applied that are not included in the Curriculum, such as T1 "Extension in the knee joints" (cm); T2 "Twisting the stick" (cm); T3 “Backward bend in lying position” (cm) is quite informative and can be used to control the flexibility of gymnasts at all stages of preparation.
Does 8 Weeks of Integrated Functional Core and Plyometric Training Improve Postural Control Performance in Young Rhythmic Gymnasts?

Abstract:It has been suggested that core stability and plyometric training (CPT) can enhance athletes' postural control. Nevertheless, the effects of an integrated core and plyometric training program on rhythmic gymnastics (RG) performance are unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of an integrated functional CPT program on young rhythmics gymnasts' postural performance. A sample of 44 young female rhythmic gymnasts from a competitive team (age = 10.5 ± 1.8 years) participated in the study. The subjects were randomly divided into a control group and an experimental group. Pre- and posttest design was used. Postural control was assessed using single-leg stance tests and RG-specific balances over a force platform and evaluated by expert RG judges. The experimental group (n = 23) completed an 8-week functional CPT program based on RG technical requirements. Meanwhile, the control group (n = 21) received their usual training sessions. A mixed model of analysis of variance was applied to evaluate the effects of an intrasubject factor and an intersubject factor on each of the dependent variables. After 8 weeks, the experimental group obtained significant better results in some variables of the right support leg with eyes open and left support leg with eyes open single-leg support (p < .01), improvements were also found in some specific RG balances: Arabesque measured on the force platform (p < .01) and the side leg with help balance scored by the judges (p < .01). In conclusion, an integrated functional CPT program improved postural control in young rhythmic gymnasts. Coaches should consider using this CPT to improve RG performance.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To verify the effects of plyometric training on lower limb kinematics, eccentric hip and knee torques, and functional performance.DESIGN: Cohort study.SETTING: Research laboratory.PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-six females were divided into a training group (TG; n = 18) that carried out the plyometric training for 8 weeks, and a control group (CG; n = 18) that carried out no physical training.INTERVENTIONS: Twenty-four plyometric training sessions during approximately 8 weeks with 3 sessions per week on alternate days.MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURES: Lower limb kinematics (maximum excursion of hip adduction, hip medial rotation, and knee abduction during the single leg squat), eccentric hip (abductor, adductor, medial, and lateral rotator) isokinetic peak torques and knee (flexor and extensor) isokinetic peak torques, and functional performance (triple hop test and the 6-m timed hop test).RESULTS: After 8 weeks, only the TG significantly reduced the values for the maximum excursion of knee abduction (P = 0.01) and hip adduction (P < 0.001). Similarly, only the TG significantly increased the eccentric hip abductor (P < 0.001) and adductor (P = 0.01) torques. Finally, only the TG significantly increased the values in the triple hop test (P < 0.001) and significantly decreased the values in the 6-m timed hop test (P < 0.001) after intervention.CONCLUSION: Plyometric training alters lower limb kinematics and increases eccentric hip torque and functional performance, suggesting the incorporation of these exercises in preventive programs for ACL injuries.

Effect of Exercise Training on Physical Fitness among Gymnastic Athletes: Systematic Review and Metanalysis

Abstract:Objective: To determine the effects of exercise training on physical fitness parameters among gymnasts. Methods: From 20 Dec 2022 to finish on 31 July 2023, an elaborate search was performed with these electronic databases (SCOPUS, PubMed, Science direct, ERIC) as well as on other sources of grey literature. The included studies were assessed using PEDRO Physiotherapy Evidence Database scale. Studies that are based on experimental design were only included to assess the physical fitness components in gymnastic players. Results: Eight articles on exercise training in gymnast met all the inclusion criteria. Fair standard of quality of studies were noted. The findings of the research were quite credible. It indicated that jumps (n=6) of various types like vertical jump, countermovement jumps and drop jumps which were the most investigated performance parameter in gymnasts, followed by trunk muscle endurance (n=2), agility (n=1) and apparatus specific performances (n=1). Most of the physical training improved the lower limb power and trunk endurance in the gymnast. While there is a lack of evidence about strength, flexibility and balance parameters, which are of utmost importance for a gymnast hence the need to be studied. Conclusion: With this systematic review we are trying to know what form of training is most beneficial for the gymnasts and it also established a strong case for the additional advantageous effects of physical training on physical fitness in gymnasts in particular.
