Abstract:One element, potassium, can be identified as the connecting link in the research of Czech neurophysiologist Prof. František Vyskočil. It accompanied him from the first student experiments on the frog muscle (Solandt effect) via sodium-potassium pump and quantum and non-quantum release of neurotransmitters (e.g. acetylcholine) to the most appreciated work on the reversible leakage of K+ from brain neurons during the Leao´s spreading cortical depression, often preceding migraine. He used a wide range of methods at the systemic, cellular and genetic levels. The electrophysiology and biochemistry of nerve-muscle contacts and synapses in the muscles and brain led to a range of interesting findings and discoveries on normal, denervated and hibernating laboratory mammals and in tissue cultures. Among others, he co-discovered the facilitating effects of catecholamines (adrenaline in particular) by end-plate synchronization of individual evoked quanta. This helps to understand the general effectiveness of nerve-muscle performance during actual stress. After the transition of the Czech Republic to capitalism, together with Dr. Josef Zicha from our Institute, he was an avid promoter of scientometry as an objective system of estimating a scientist´s success in basic research (journal Vesmír, 69: 644-645, 1990 in Czech).

Abstract:We suggest a procedure that is relevant both to electronic performance and human psychology, so that the creative logic and the respect for human nature appear in a good agreement. The idea is to create an electronic card containing basic information about a person's psychological behavior in order to make it possible to quickly decide about the suitability of one for another. This "psychological electronics" approach could be tested via student projects.

Unlearning organized numbness through poetic synesthesia: A study in scarlet

Abstract:Management Learning, Ahead of Print. I define "organized numbness" as the organized inability to perceive sensations, a learned desensitization operating in the way our (1) bodies, (2) language, and (3) knowledge are organized. I propose poetic synesthesia's power to associate several sensory perceptions as a way to unlearn this sort of disembodied habituation. Inspired by the so-called "accursed" French poets of the 19th century, the "long, prodigious, and rational disorganization of all the senses" of synesthesia helps me propose a method for unlearning organized numbness. I illustrate this by "a study in scarlet," that is, by plunging into the depths of a synesthetic exploration of blood as my "fil rouge" to infuse our working bodies with renewed sensorial and embodied—or rather "embloodied"—life. I end by discussing how cultivating poetic synesthesia can help us unlearn organized numbness in the body, in language, and in knowledge, and how it can instead respectively foster resonance by learning (1) a different embodied habituation of sensorial sensitivity, (2) a language that instead of abstracting us from the senses actually allows us to reconnect with them and to delve deeply into their combined and thereby potentiated power, and (3) an epistemological gateway to the "unknown."

Abstract:This is a personal description of Grzegorz Rozenberg. There is something magical in the fact that one man, Grzegorz, has been able to obtain so many and such good results in so numerous and diverse areas of science. This is why I have called him a “magical scientist.” He is also a very interdisciplinary scientist. In some sense this is due to his educational background. His first degree was in electronics engineering, the second a master’s in computer science, and the third a Ph.D. in mathematics. However, in the case of Grzegorz, the main drive for new disciplines comes from his tireless search for new challenges in basic science, rather than following known tracks. Starting with fundamental automata and language theory, he soon extended his realm to biologically motivated developmental languages, and further to concurrency, Petri nets, and graph grammars. During the past decade, his main focus has been on natural computing, a term coined by Grzegorz himself to mean either computing taking place in nature or human-designed computing inspired by nature.

Abstract:The brain is a living miracle. There are so many tasks to be done at once, so many neurons that need to talk with each other, integrate and interact to perform perfection in one part of one synaptic or non-synaptic action and within femtoseconds. We understand that the diseased brain that is compromised need not be thought of as a damaged brain. It is simply one that needs to be and can be fixed, in fact, with brilliant technologies that are at our fingertips. We believe that the brain is an electronic and chemical device that matches in temporal and spatial synchrony our first- class small sensor for surgery trademarked, the BRODERICK PROBE® series of nanoprobes and circuits. It is said to be one of the latest extraordinary feats in the surgical world and it is named affectionately after the author’s father, Paddy Broderick, from County Clare, Ireland. Thus, we think of brain and spinal cord disease as a mismatched connection, some connection that is wrong-just not right- as the fabulous network of dendrites work as do our internet cables, in this case, insulated from the extracellular space and as these dendrites impinge on an axon at the terminal synapses, neuronal and glial decisions are made and so our tethered telemetry and fiber optic sensors soar sweetly through the milieu of cerebral matter to allow us to see, to image online and in real time and in vivo, what the brain is feeling or doing at any precise sub-second during intraoperative brain surgery. This is the true story of how the announcement of this amazing discovery is credited for repurpose. Abstract:My visual artworks propose ways of being in the world-the world that humans share with non-humans. By developing projects such as breathe with a tree or listen to soil, I wish my installations to be experienced as translators. Those art projects are the result of collaborations with different teams of scientists. Together we found technological tools that could be used in art installations. These hybridizations between art and science sometimes mischievously divert technology, and instead, offer us aesthetic work with its roots deep in traditional arts and crafts knowledge. With them we can-for a moment-share time with plants, and be in dialogue with air, soil and gravity. The first project, Dendromacy, an experimental movie, was designed with a specific cooled lens thermal camera. The second one, Listening to the soil, a sounded ceramic installation started from bioacoustics recordings of the soil mega and meso-fauna.

Abstract:Recording and modulation of neuronal activity enables the study of brain function in health and disease. While translational neuroscience relies on electrical recording and modulation techniques, mechanistic studies in rodent models leverage genetic precision of optical methods, such as optogenetics and imaging of fluorescent indicators. In addition to electrical signal transduction, neurons produce and receive diverse chemical signals which motivate tools to probe and modulate neurochemistry. Although the past decade has delivered a wealth of technologies for electrophysiology, optogenetics, chemical sensing, and optical recording, combining these2 modalities within a single platform remains challenging. This work leverages materials selection and convergence fiber drawing to permit neural recording, electrical stimulation, optogenetics, fiber photometry, drug and gene delivery, and voltammetric recording of neurotransmitters within individual fibers. Composed of polymers and non-magnetic carbon-based conductors, these fibers are compatible with magnetic resonance imaging, enabling concurrent stimulation and wholebrain monitoring. Their utility is demonstrated in studies of the mesolimbic reward pathway by simultaneously interfacing with the ventral tegmental area and nucleus accumbens in mice and characterizing the neurophysiological effects of a stimulant drug. This study highlights the potential of these fibers to probe electrical, optical, and chemical signaling across multiple brain regions in both mechanistic and translational studies.

Abstract:From 30 September 2023 to 7 January 2024, the Nobel Prize Museum in Stockholm presented the show Fungi-In Art and Science. For the exhibition, an alliance of scientists, artists, and designers was brought together that overcame all the alleged borders between the disciplines, between the scientific and the creative world. This special exhibition is the starting point to take on a tour where it is about crossing borders and growing connections when working with fungi. My interview partners represent perfectly the different angles from which you can take a look onto the kingdom of fungi. There is the person without previous knowledge but with a profound artistic understanding who got mesmerized by the subject-matter, which he didn't realize it existed before-Karl-Johan Cottman. There is the scientist, being knee-deep in fungi matter who discovered the arts for an extension of her scientific understanding-Vera Meyer. And last but not least there is the person living passionately for the arts who found fungi mesmerizing for both art creation and progressive/sustainable production-Phil Ross. So, there are three threads weaving one fungal fabric. Have fun reading it!

Abstract:The article examines one of the key stories of Bruno Schultz’s collection «Cinnamon Shops» in the context of the aesthetic originality of the prose of the Polish modernist novelist, his ontology and poetics. Focusing on the whimsical nature of imagery, the word’s ability to creative demiurge, the synthesis of the spiritual and the material quite logically leads to the idea of Schulz’s ontological borderline. It is from this point of view that the artistic time-space of «Crocodile Street» is interpreted as the compositional and content center of the collection. Emphasis is placed on the multidimensional function of Schultz’s word, which is closely related to autobiography, intergenerational memory, the collective unconscious, and the theory of archetypes. The connection of the word with the poetics of form creation is traced, and the naming is considered from the point of view of the sacralization of the depicted objects, their correlation with the biblical acts of world creation. The phenomenon of «annexation of the subconscious», its influence on words, ideas as constructs of the author’s representation of the world is singled out. The images of a store, warehouses, and a labyrinth are correlated with the subconscious, the most secret recesses of the human soul. No less important is the connection with the cultural space, cartographic images of the Baroque, graphic art and critical self-reflections of the writer. The palimpsest of the urban space, the presence of different cultural traditions and everyday anthropological practices in it are studied. The connection between the images of the story and the typical Schultz concepts of puppetry, marionette behavior, the psychology of mimicry, adaptation to the situation is traced. The ambivalence of the author’s world, built on the game of verbal plans, balancing between the real and the unreal, the sphere of denotations and techniques of representation, is proven.

Abstract:Are there parallels between the furthest reaches of our universe, and the foundations of thought, awareness, perception, and emotion? What are the connections between the webs and structures that define both? What are the differences? "As Above As Below" was an exhibition that examined these questions. It consisted of six artworks, each of them the product of a collaboration that included at least one artist, astrophysicist, and neuroscientist. The installations explored new parallels between intergalactic and neuronal networks through media such as digital projection, virtual reality, and interactive multimedia, and served to illustrate diverse collaboration practices and ways to communicate across very different fields.
