Abstract:In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the gradient coils are used to encode the spatial positions of protons by varying the magnetic field linearly across the imaging subject. With the latest development of MRI technique and new clinical and research applications, the gradient coil system requires increasingly innovative designs. In this paper, four unconventional gradient coil designs are reviewed: (1) local gradient coils; (2) new coil configurations with reduced peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS); (3) dedicated structures designed for hybrid systems (combining MRI with other medical devices); and (4) the full 3D coil designs. For the first type, the development of local gradient coils (mainly head coils) is discussed chronologically and divided into three stages: the "golden" stage in the 1990s, the "wane" stage in the 2000s, and the "revival" stage in the 2010s. For the second type, various designs for the reduction of PNS problems have been described, including local and whole-body gradient coil systems. For the third design, a dedicated gradient coil design for multi-modality combination is illustrated with an MRI-LINAC system. Finally, gradient systems with non-layered coil structure are described in the fourth design type. We hope that this review on unconventional gradient coil designs will be useful for the new development of MRI technology and emerging medical applications.
On evaluation of MRI coil excited radio-frequency fields inside multilayered spherical head phantom——DyadicGreen's function/MoM method

Abstract:This work presented a method for computation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) coil excited electromagnetic fields (EMFs) inside the human head. A head-sized, multilayered dielectric spherical head phantom with measured radial conductivity and permittivity profiles was constructed, and then DyadicGreen's function (DGF)-based method was used to calculate the EMFs inside the head phantom. This solution is suitable for calculation of EMFs excited by any radio-frequency (RF) resonators whose current distributions can be calculated by method of moment (MoM). The calculated EMFs can then be used to deduce MRI imaging parameters. Results show that the computation time of the proposed method is much lower than that of a full finite difference time domain (FDTD) calculation using a complex head model, and the computation speed is increased by more than ten-fold. Simulation demonstrates that the magnetic and electric fields in human head are affected by the frequency, and that field/tissue interactions increase with the frequency increases, and that the inhomogeneity of the magnetic field in human head increases, thus resulting in the distortion of MR signals. The proposed DGF/MoM method can be used for high field MRI coil design, for example, the rapid evaluation of RF resonator (surface and volume coils) and high performance gradient system designs.
Three-dimensional Simultaneous Brain Mapping of T1, T2, T2*and Magnetic Susceptibility with MR Multitasking

Abstract:Purpose To develop a new technique that enables simultaneous quantification of whole-brain T-1, T-2, T2*, as well as susceptibility and synthesis of six contrast-weighted images in a single 9.1-minute scan. Methods The technique uses hybrid T-2-prepared inversion-recovery pulse modules and multi-echo gradient-echo readouts to collect k-space data with various T1, T2, and T2* weightings. The underlying image is represented as a six-dimensional low-rank tensor consisting of three spatial dimensions and three temporal dimensions corresponding to T-1 recovery, T-2 decay, and multi-echo behaviors, respectively. Multiparametric maps were fitted from reconstructed image series. The proposed method was validated on phantoms and healthy volunteers, by comparing quantitative measurements against corresponding reference methods. The feasibility of generating six contrast-weighted images was also examined. Results High quality, co-registered T-1, T-2, and T2* susceptibility maps were generated that closely resembled the reference maps. Phantom measurements showed substantial consistency (R-2 > 0.98) with the reference measurements. Despite the significant differences of T-1 (p < .001), T-2 (p = .002), and T2* (p = 0.008) between our method and the references for in vivo studies, excellent agreement was achieved with all intraclass correlation coefficients greater than 0.75. No significant difference was found for susceptibility (p = .900). The framework is also capable of synthesizing six contrast-weighted images. Conclusion The MR Multitasking-based 3D brain mapping of T-1, T-2, T2*, and susceptibility agrees well with the reference and is a promising technique for multicontrast and quantitative imaging.
Proton/Deuterium Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Rodents at 9.4T Using Birdcage Coils

Abstract:The purpose of the present study was to fabricate a volume coil for proton/deuterium magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in rodents at 9.4 T. Two birdcage radiofrequency (RF) coils have been designed for proton/deuterium MRI: the rungs of two concentric birdcages were azimuthally interleaved with each other for better decoupling, and the two coils were tuned to 400.3 and 61.4 MHz for H-1/H-2 resonance at 9.4 T. Compared to a commercially available coil, the proposed H-1/H-2 RF coil provides reasonable transmission efficiency and imaging signal-to-noise ratio (SNR); the relationships among imaging parameters such as SNR, voxel size, and deuterium oxide concentrations have been quantitatively studied, and the linear correlation results together with the spectroscopic data in vivo indicate its feasibility in deuterium metabolic imaging (DMI) in vivo. Our study indicates that using the birdcage design for MRI signal excitation combined with surface coil array for signal reception can facilitate DMI investigations more effectively towards future pre-clinical and clinical applications. As a noninvasive method by measuring nonhydrogen nuclear deuterium signals to reflect metabolite information, DMI will feature prominently in future precision medicine through the whole process of diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. PILOT: Physics-Informed Learned Optimized Trajectories for Accelerated MRI

Abstract:Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has long been considered to be among "the gold standards" of diagnostic medical imaging. The long acquisition times, however, render MRI prone to motion artifacts, let alone their adverse contribution to the relative high costs of MRI examination. Over the last few decades, multiple studies have focused on the development of both physical and post-processing methods for accelerated acquisition of MRI scans. These two approaches, however, have so far been addressed separately. On the other hand, recent works in optical computational imaging have demonstrated growing success of concurrent learning-based design of data acquisition and image reconstruction schemes. Such schemes have already demonstrated substantial effectiveness, leading to considerably shorter acquisition times and improved quality of image reconstruction. Inspired by this initial success, in this work, we propose a novel approach to the learning of optimal schemes for conjoint acquisition and reconstruction of MRI scans, with the optimization carried out simultaneously with respect to the time-efficiency of data acquisition and the quality of resulting reconstructions. To be of a practical value, the schemes are encoded in the form of general k-space trajectories, whose associated magnetic gradients are constrained to obey a set of predefined hardware requirements (as defined in terms of, e.g., peak currents and maximum slew rates of magnetic gradients). With this proviso in mind, we propose a novel algorithm for the end-to-end training of a combined acquisition-reconstruction pipeline using a deep neural network with differentiable forward- and back-propagation operators. We demonstrate its effectiveness on image reconstruction and image segmentation tasks, reporting substantial improvements in terms of acceleration factors as well as the quality of these tasks.

Abstract:Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an essential tool for guiding and supervising intraoperative and interventional therapies due to its excellent soft tissue discrimination and multiplanar and 3-D volume imaging capabilities. The predominant utilization of flexible surface radio frequency (RF) coils, though prevalent, is accompanied by certain limitations such as suboptimal decoupling between coil elements, instability in fixation, and nonuniform image intensity and tissue contrast. Furthermore, these coils are constrained in their ability to perform parallel accelerated imaging due to their limited number of channels. To address these issues, we designed and devised a 14-channel coil array, which is housed on a detachable, rotatable, and cylinder-like holder, for use in human brain imaging at 3 T. To accommodate interventional devices, we constructed ten openings in the housing, and the coil can be rotated clockwise/counterclockwise by up to 15° along the head–foot axis. In addition, the coil can be split into two parts: the top six and bottom eight channels, and each part can be operated independently for imaging. Through experiments on a human head phantom and a human subject, we found that the 14-channel coil performed comparably to a commercial 20-channel head/neck coil in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) distribution, accelerated parallel imaging ability, as well as uniformity and tissue contrast in gray-white matter. Coil quality assessment also showed negligible differences between rotation and nonrotation. The proposed coil array holds potential for deployment in intraoperative/interventional MRI applications, facilitating lesion localization, surgical and therapeutic guidance, as well as prognosis monitoring.

Abstract:Receiver arrays with a large number of coil elements are becoming progressively available because of their increased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and enhanced parallel imaging performance. However, longer reconstruction time and intensive computational cost have become significant concerns as the number of channels increases, especially in some iterative reconstructions. Coil compression can effectively solve this problem by linearly combining the raw data frommultiple coils into fewer virtual coils. In this work, geometric-decomposition coil compression (GCC) is applied to radial sampling (both linear-angle and golden-angle patterns are discussed) for better compression. GCC, which is different from directly compressing in k-space, is performed separately in each spatial location along the fully sampled directions, then followed by an additional alignment step to guarantee the smoothness of the virtual coil sensitivities. Both numerical simulation data and in vivo data were tested. Experimental results demonstrated that the GCC algorithm can achieve higher SNR and lower normalized root mean squared error values than the conventional principal component analysis approach in radial acquisitions.
High-resolution diffusion-weighted imaging with interleaved variable-density spiral acquisitions

Abstract:Purpose: To develop a multishot magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) pulse sequence and reconstruction algorithm for diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in the brain with submillimeter in-plane resolution. Materials and methods: A self-navigated multishot acquisition technique based on variable-density spiral k-space trajectory design was implemented on clinical MRI scanners. The image reconstruction algorithm takes advantage of the oversampling of the center k-space and uses the densely sampled central portion of the k-space data for both imaging reconstruction and motion correction. The developed DWI technique was tested in an agar gel phantom and three healthy volunteers. Results: Motions result in phase and k-space shifts in the DWI data acquired using multishot spiral acquisitions. With the two-dimensional self-navigator correction, diffusion-weighted images with a resolution of 0.9 x 0.9 x 3 mm3 were successfully obtained using different interleaves ranging from 8-32. The measured apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in the homogenous gel phantom was (1.66 +/- 0.09) x 10(-3) mm2/second, which was the same as measured with single-shot methods. The intersubject average ADC from the brain parenchyma of normal adults was (0.91 +/- 0.01) x 10(-3) mm2/second, which was in a good agreement with the reported literature values. Conclusion: The self-navigated multishot variable-density spiral acquisition provides a time-efficient approach to acquire high-resolution diffusion-weighted images on a clinical scanner. The reconstruction algorithm based on motion correction in the k-space data is robust, and measured ADC values are accurate and reproducible.
Extreme MRI: Large-Scale Volumetric Dynamic Imaging from Continuous Non-Gated Acquisitions

Abstract:Purpose: To develop a framework to reconstruct large-scale volumetric dynamic MRI from rapid continuous and non-gated acquisitions, with applications to pulmonary and dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE) imaging. Theory and Methods: The problem considered here requires recovering hundred-gigabytes of dynamic volumetric image data from a few gigabytes of k-space data, acquired continuously over several minutes. This reconstruction is vastly under-determined, heavily stressing computing resources as well as memory management and storage. To overcome these challenges, we leverage intrinsic three dimensional (3D) trajectories, such as 3D radial and 3D cones, with ordering that incoherently cover time and k-space over the entire acquisition. We then propose two innovations: (1) A compressed representation using multi-scale low rank matrix factorization that constrains the reconstruction problem, and reduces its memory footprint. (2) Stochastic optimization to reduce computation, improve memory locality, and minimize communications between threads and processors. We demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method on DCE imaging acquired with a golden-angle ordered 3D cones trajectory and pulmonary imaging acquired with a bit-reversed ordered 3D radial trajectory. We compare it with "soft-gated" dynamic reconstruction for DCE and respiratory resolved reconstruction for pulmonary imaging. Results: The proposed technique shows transient dynamics that are not seen in gating based methods. When applied to datasets with irregular, or non-repetitive motions, the proposed method displays sharper image features. Conclusion: We demonstrated a method that can reconstruct massive 3D dynamic image series in the extreme undersampling and extreme computation setting.

Initial realisation of a multichannel , non-linear PatLoc gradient coil

Abstract:Spatial encoding using non-bijective, curvilinear magnetic fields [1] has been introduced to overcome present limitations of gradient performance due to safety limitations from peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS). These PatLoc(parallel acquisition technique using localized gradients) fields allow for higher ΔBmax/dt, and therefore faster imaging while staying below the limit of PNS. PatLoc fields may also be adapted to the subjects or organs anatomy, as it is not restricted to rectilinear data acquisition. For practical realisation in cylindrical geometry at least two fields are required, providing two gradients, one in radial and one in circumferential direction to retain some image reconstruction properties. As a continuous circumferential gradient is physically not realizable, a concept of using multipolar fields for spatial encoding was proposed [2]. It is most promising to use this gradient system as a head gradient set. For easy implementation this first functional model is designed for an animal MRI system. This abstract presents the first built gradient coil.
In vivo three-dimensional brain and extremity MRI at 50 mT using a permanent magnet Halbach array

Abstract:Purpose: To design a low-cost, portable permanent magnet-based MRI system capable of obtaining in vivo MR images within a reasonable scan time. Methods: A discretized Halbach permanent magnet array with a clear bore diameter of 27 cm was designed for operation at 50 mT. Custom built gradient coils, radiofrequency coil, gradient amplifiers and radiofrequency amplifier were integrated and tested on both phantoms and in vivo. Results: Phantom results showed that the gradient non-linearity in the y- and z-directions was less than 5% over a 15 cm field-of-view and did not need correcting. For the x-direction, it was significantly greater, but could be partially corrected in post-processing. Three dimensional In vivo scans of the brain of a healthy volunteer using a turbo-spin echo sequence were acquired at a spatial resolution of 4x4x4 mm in a time of ~2 mins. T1-weighted and T2-weighted scans showed a good degree of tissue contrast. In addition, in vivo scans of the knee of a healthy volunteer were acquired at a spatial resolution of ~3x2x2 mm within a twelve minutes to show the applicability of the system to extremity imaging. Conclusion: This work has shown that it is possible to construct a low-field MRI unit with hardware components costing less than 10000 euros, which is able to acquire human images in vivo within a reasonable data acquisition time. The system has a high degree of portability with magnet weight ~75 kg, gradient and RF amplifiers each 15 kg, gradient coils 10 kg and spectrometer 5 kg.
Dynamic and Rapid Deep Synthesis of Molecular MRI Signals

Abstract:Model-driven analysis of biophysical phenomena is gaining increased attention and utility for medical imaging applications. In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the availability of well-established models for describing the relations between the nuclear magnetization, tissue properties, and the externally applied magnetic fields has enabled the prediction of image contrast and served as a powerful tool for designing the imaging protocols that are now routinely used in the clinic. Recently, various advanced imaging techniques have relied on these models for image reconstruction, quantitative tissue parameter extraction, and automatic optimization of acquisition protocols. In molecular MRI, however, the increased complexity of the imaging scenario, where the signals from various chemical compounds and multiple proton pools must be accounted for, results in exceedingly long model simulation times, severely hindering the progress of this approach and its dissemination for various clinical applications. Here, we show that a deep-learning-based system can capture the nonlinear relations embedded in the molecular MRI Bloch-McConnell model, enabling a rapid and accurate generation of biologically realistic synthetic data. The applicability of this simulated data for in-silico, in-vitro, and in-vivo imaging applications is then demonstrated for chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) and semisolid macromolecule magnetization transfer (MT) analysis and quantification. The proposed approach yielded 78%-99% acceleration in data synthesis time while retaining excellent agreement with the ground truth (Pearson's r$>$0.99, p$<$0.0001, normalized root mean square error $<$3%).

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Purpose</h3><p>To develop a highly efficient magnetic field gradient coil for head imaging that achieves 200 mT/m and 500 T/m/s on each axis using a standard 1 MVA gradient driver in clinical whole‐body 3.0T MR magnet.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Methods</h3><p>A 42‐cm inner diameter head‐gradient used the available 89‐ to 91‐cm warm bore space in a whole‐body 3.0T magnet by increasing the radial separation between the primary and the shield coil windings to 18.6 cm. This required the removal of the standard whole‐body gradient and radiofrequency coils. To achieve a coil efficiency ~4× that of whole‐body gradients, a double‐layer primary coil design with asymmetric x‐y axes, and symmetric z‐axis was used. The use of all‐hollow conductor with direct fluid cooling of the gradient coil enabled ≥50 kW of total heat dissipation.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Results</h3><p>This design achieved a coil efficiency of 0.32 mT/m/A, allowing 200 mT/m and 500 T/m/s for a 620 A/1500 V driver. The gradient coil yielded substantially reduced echo spacing, and minimum repetition time and echo time. In high <i>b</i> = 10,000 s/mm<sup>2</sup> diffusion, echo time (TE) < 50 ms was achieved (>50% reduction compared with whole‐body gradients). The gradient coil passed the American College of Radiology tests for gradient linearity and distortion, and met acoustic requirements for nonsignificant risk operation. </p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Conclusions</h3><p>Ultra‐high gradient coil performance was achieved for head imaging without substantial increases in gradient driver power in a whole‐body 3.0T magnet after removing the standard gradient coil. As such, any clinical whole‐body 3.0T MR system could be upgraded with 3‐4× improvement in gradient performance for brain imaging.</p></section>

Abstract:A novel reconfigurable coaxial dipole design opens a way to scale the dynamic parallel imaging approach up to a realistic number of channels, that is, 32 and above. The novel eight‐channel array was optimized and tested experimentally, including in vivo studies. Parallel imaging is one of the key MRI technologies that allow reduction of image acquisition time. However, the parallel imaging reconstruction commonly leads to a signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) drop evaluated using a so‐called geometrical factor (g‐factor). The g‐factor is minimized by increasing the number of array elements and their spatial diversity. At the same time, increasing the element count requires a decrease in their size. This may lead to insufficient coil loading, an increase in the relative noise contribution from the RF coil itself, and hence SNR reduction. Previously, instead of increasing the channel number, we introduced the concept of electronically switchable time‐varying sensitivities, which was shown to improve parallel imaging performance. In this approach, each reconfigurable receive element supports two spatially distinct sensitivity profiles. In this work, we developed and evaluated a novel eight‐element human head receive‐only reconfigurable coaxial dipole array for human head imaging at 9.4 T. In contrast to the previously reported reconfigurable dipole array, the new design does not include direct current (DC) control wires connected directly to the dipoles. The coaxial cable itself is used to deliver DC voltage to the PIN diodes located at the ends of the antennas. Thus, the novel reconfigurable coaxial dipole design opens a way to scale the dynamic parallel imaging up to a realistic number of channels, that is, 32 and above. The novel array was optimized and tested experimentally, including in vivo studies. It was found that dynamic sensitivity switching provided an 8% lower mean and 33% lower maximum g‐factor (for Ry × Rz = 2 × 2 acceleration) compared with conventional static sensitivities.

Abstract:Brain imaging using conventional head coils presents several problems in routine magnetic resonance (MR) examination, such as anxiety and claustrophobic reactions during scanning with a head coil, photon attenuation caused by the MRI head coil in positron emission tomography (PET)/MRI, and coil constraints in intraoperative MRI or MRI-guided radiotherapy. In this paper, we propose a super resolution generative adversarial (SRGAN-VGG) network-based approach to enhance low-quality brain images scanned with body coils. Two types of T1 fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images scanned with different coils were obtained in this study: joint images of the head-neck coil and digital surround technology body coil (H+B images) and body coil images (B images). The deep learning (DL) model was trained using images acquired from 36 subjects and tested in 4 subjects. Both quantitative and qualitative image quality assessment methods were performed during evaluation. Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used for statistical analysis. Quantitative image quality assessment showed an improved structural similarity index (SSIM) and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) in gray matter and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) tissues for DL images compared with B images (P <.01), while the mean square error (MSE) was significantly decreased (P <.05). The analysis also showed that the natural image quality evaluator (NIQE) and blind image quality index (BIQI) were significantly lower for DL images than for B images (P <.0001). Qualitative scoring results indicated that DL images showed an improved SNR, image contrast and sharpness (P<.0001). The outcomes of this study preliminarily indicate that body coils can be used in brain imaging, making it possible to expand the application of MR-based brain imaging.
High-fidelity, high-spatial-resolution diffusion magnetic resonance imaging of ex vivo whole human brain at ultra-high gradient strength with structured low-rank echo-planar imaging ghost correction

Abstract:Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) of whole ex vivo human brain specimens enables three-dimensional (3D) mapping of structural connectivity at the mesoscopic scale, providing detailed evaluation of fiber architecture and tissue microstructure at a spatial resolution that is difficult to access in vivo. To account for the short T2 and low diffusivity of fixed tissue, ex vivo dMRI is often acquired using strong diffusion-sensitizing gradients and multishot/segmented 3D echo-planar imaging (EPI) sequences to achieve high spatial resolution. However, the combination of strong diffusion-sensitizing gradients and multishot/segmented EPI readout can result in pronounced ghosting artifacts incurred by nonlinear spatiotemporal variations in the magnetic field produced by eddy currents. Such ghosting artifacts cannot be corrected with conventional correction solutions and pose a significant roadblock to leveraging human MRI scanners with ultrahigh gradients for ex vivo whole-brain dMRI. Here, we show that ghosting-correction approaches that correct for either polarity-related ghosting or shot-to-shot variations in a separate manner are suboptimal for 3D multishot diffusion-weighted EPI experiments in fixed human brain specimens using strong diffusion-sensitizing gradients on the 3-T Connectom MRI scanner, resulting in orientationally biased dMRI estimates. We apply a recently developed advanced k-space reconstruction method based on structured low-rank matrix (SLM) modeling that handles both polarity-related ghosting and shot-to-shot variation simultaneously, to mitigate artifacts in high-angular resolution multishot dMRI data acquired in several fixed human brain specimens at 0.7-0.8-mm isotropic spatial resolution using b-values up to 10,000 s/mm2 and gradient strengths up to 280 mT/m. We demonstrate the improved mapping of diffusion tensor imaging and fiber orientation distribution functions in key neuroanatomical areas distributed across the whole brain using SLM-based EPI ghost correction compared with alternative techniques.

Abstract:Recovering dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) from highly undersampled raw data is of great significance, and is an important approach for achieving both high temporal and spatial resolution in dynamic contrast enhanced imaging. In this study, a method for 3D dynamic MRI with high spatiotemporal resolution and motion insensitivity was developed, which combines golden angle variable density spiral trajectory, parallel imaging and homotopic l0 minimization-based compressed sensing. Golden angle variable density spiral trajectory, which has the advantages of high data acquisition efficiency and motion insensitivity, was used to acquire k-space data. In the reconstruction algorithm, multicoil sparsity constrain was applied in the temporal total variation domain and l0 minimization, instead of traditional l1 minimization, was adopted, which could further increase the undersampling rate. Simulations and in vivo experiments demonstrated that high spatial resolution and temporal resolution can be achieved by the proposed method while maintaining the image quality. This study also suggested the advantages of homotopic l0 norm-based 3D dynamic MRI reconstruction and its clinical potential.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been an intensive development of portable ultralow-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for low-cost, shielding-free, and point-of-care applications. However, its quality is poor and scan time is long. We propose a fast acquisition and deep learning reconstruction framework to accelerate brain MRI at 0.055 tesla. The acquisition consists of a single average three-dimensional (3D) encoding with 2D partial Fourier sampling, reducing the scan time of T1- and T2-weighted imaging protocols to 2.5 and 3.2 minutes, respectively. The 3D deep learning leverages the homogeneous brain anatomy available in high-field human brain data to enhance image quality, reduce artifacts and noise, and improve spatial resolution to synthetic 1.5-mm isotropic resolution. Our method successfully overcomes low-signal barrier, reconstructing fine anatomical structures that are reproducible within subjects and consistent across two protocols. It enables fast and quality whole-brain MRI at 0.055 tesla, with potential for widespread biomedical applications.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Purpose</h3><p>To design a low‐cost, portable permanent magnet‐based MRI system capable of obtaining in vivo MR images within a reasonable scan time.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Methods</h3><p>A discretized Halbach permanent magnet array with a clear bore diameter of 27 cm was designed for operation at 50 mT. Custom‐built gradient coils, RF coil, gradient amplifiers, and RF amplifier were integrated and tested on both phantoms and in vivo.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Results</h3><p>Phantom results showed that the gradient nonlinearity in the y‐direction and z‐direction was less than 5% over a 15‐cm FOV and did not need correcting. For the x‐direction, it was significantly greater, but could be partially corrected in postprocessing. Three‐dimensional in vivo scans of the brain of a healthy volunteer using a turbo spin‐echo sequence were acquired at a spatial resolution of 4 × 4 × 4 mm in a time of about 2 minutes. The T<sub>1</sub>‐weighted and T<sub>2</sub>‐weighted scans showed a good degree of tissue contrast. In addition, in vivo scans of the knee of a healthy volunteer were acquired at a spatial resolution of about 3 × 2 × 2 mm within 12 minutes to show the applicability of the system to extremity imaging. </p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Conclusion</h3><p>This work has shown that it is possible to construct a low‐field MRI unit with hardware components costing less than 10 000 Euros, which is able to acquire human images in vivo within a reasonable data‐acquisition time. The system has a high degree of portability with magnet weight of approximately 75 kg, gradient and RF amplifiers each 15 kg, gradient coils 10 kg, and spectrometer 5 kg.</p></section>

Abstract:Purpose: To introduce a newly developed technique (DTI-MRE) for the simultaneous acquisition of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and 3D-vector field magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) data, and to demonstrate its feasibility when applied in vivo to the mouse brain. Methods: In DTI-MRE, simultaneous encoding is achieved by using a series of diffusion/motion-sensitizing gradients (dMSGs) with specific timing and directions. By adjusting the duration of the dMSGs with the diffusion time and with the mechanical vibration frequency, the shear wave motion and diffusion are encoded into the MR phase and MR magnitude signals, respectively. The dMSGs are applied in a noncollinear and noncoplanar manner that optimizes the capture of both the DTI signal attenuation and the three-dimensional MRE displacements. In this work, the feasibility of the DTI-MRE technique was demonstrated on in vivo mouse brains (n=3) using a 9.4T animal MRI scanner. The DTI-MRE derived parameters (MD, mean diffusivity; FA, fractional anisotropy; MRE displacement fields; and shear modulus |G|) were compared with those acquired using conventional, separate MRE and diffusion methods. Results: The averaged (MD, FA, and |G|) values for three mice are (0.580 ± 0.050 µm2 /ms, 0.43 ± 0.02, and 4.80 ± 0.06 kPa) and (0.583 ± 0.035 µm2 /ms, 0.46 ± 0.02, and 4.91 ± 0.19 kPa) for DTI-MRE, and conventional DTI and 3D-vector field MRE measurements, respectively. All derived parameters (MD, FA, |G|, and displacement) obtained using the combined DTI-MRE method and conventional methods were significantly correlated with P < 0.05. Conclusion: Simultaneous acquisition of DTI and 3D-vector field MRE is feasible in vivo and reduces the scan time by up to 50% compared with conventional, separate acquisitions, while providing an immediate co-registration of maps of diffusion properties and stiffness.
