Abstract:Abstract Constructing an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on lithium metal electrodes is a promising approach to address the rampant growth of dangerous lithium morphologies (dendritic and dead Li 0 ) and low Coulombic efficiency that plague development of lithium metal batteries, but how Li + transport behavior in the SEI is coupled with mechanical properties remains unknown. We demonstrate here a facile and scalable solution-processed approach to form a Li 3 N-rich SEI with a phase-pure crystalline structure that minimizes the diffusion energy barrier of Li + across the SEI. Compared with a polycrystalline Li 3 N SEI obtained from conventional practice, the phase-pure/single crystalline Li 3 N-rich SEI constitutes an interphase of high mechanical strength and low Li + diffusion barrier. We elucidate the correlation among Li + transference number, diffusion behavior, concentration gradient, and the stability of the lithium metal electrode by integrating phase field simulations with experiments. We demonstrate improved reversibility and charge/discharge cycling behaviors for both symmetric cells and full lithium-metal batteries constructed with this Li 3 N-rich SEI. These studies may cast new insight into the design and engineering of an ideal artificial SEI for stable and high-performance lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Interfacial processes of lithium (Li) deposition and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation are key determinants of the safety and performance in high-energy Li metal batteries. With the vigorous growth of effective strategies for stabilizing the interfaces, high-resolution and in situ characterization techniques are contemporaneously needed for probing and regulating the underlying mechanisms of these two processes and their interrelation. Therefore, we introduce in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) that enables direct observation of the nanoscale morphology and dynamic evolution of the Li/electrolyte interfaces in working environments. Inhomogeneous SEI with nanoparticles (NPs) forms in traditional electrolyte, which extends with chain-like wrinkles as dendrite nucleates. By precisely controlling the concentration of lithium nitrate additive, we construct a compact bilayer SEI with a thin amorphous film covering a NP-packed layer structurally, promoting the uniform Li dissolution/deposition. This in situ AFM visualization in Li metal batteries highlights direct insights into distinct nanostructures and growth dynamics of nitrate-mediated SEI film at Li anode, and provides a universal and convenient technique for interfacial analysis and mechanistic understanding of Li metal anodes.

Abstract:Polymer-ceramic composite electrolytes enable safe implementation of Li metal batteries with potentially transformative energy density. Nevertheless, the formation of Li-dendrites and its complex interplay with the Li-metal solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) remain a substantial obstacle which is poorly understood. Here we tackle this issue by a combination of solid-state NMR spectroscopy and Overhauser dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) which boosts NMR interfacial sensitivity through polarization transfer from the metal conduction electrons. We achieve unprecedented molecular-level insight into dendrites formation and propagation within the composites and determine the composition and properties of their SEI. We find that the dendrite’s quantity and growth path depend on the ceramic content and correlated with battery’s lifetime. We show that the enhancement of Li resonances in the SEI occurs through Li/Li+ charge transfer in Overhauser DNP, allowing us to correlate DNP enhancements and Li transport and directly determine the SEI lithium permeability. These findings have promising implications for SEI design and dendrites management which are essential for the realization of Li metal batteries.

Abstract:ConspectusDriven by the intrinsic safety and potential to achieve higher energy densities, solid-state Li-metal batteries are intensively researched. The ideal solid electrolyte should possess a high conductivity, should have electrochemical stability both toward the Li-metal anode and to high voltage cathodes, should suppress dendrites, should provide flexibility to deal with the volumetric changes of the electrodes, and should be easy to process. This challenging combination is to date not fulfilled by any solid electrolyte, be it organic, inorganic, or even a hybrid of the two. Pushing the development of solid electrolytes toward reversible room temperature operation when used in tandem with Li-metal anodes demands an understanding of critical processes that determine the properties of the solid electrolyte. These include the complex Li-ion transport as well as the Li-metal plating processes. This already presents the first experimental hurdle as the ability to directly and noninvasively monitor the Li-ion kinetics, Li densities, and Li chemistries, under in/situ or operando, is not trivial.The scope of this Account is the investigation and improvement of solid electrolytes, with the emphasis on the possibilities offered by solid-state NMR and neutron depth profiling as direct probes for the study of critical processes that involve Li ions and Li metal. Solid-state NMR allows us to unravel the complex interface chemical environment and the diffusion processes both in the bulk solid electrolyte and in the interface environment. These studies shed light on the role of interface composition, wetting and space-charge layers, on the macroscopic battery performance. Another technique that enables probing Li directly is operando neutron depth profiling, which allows us to determine the Li density as a function of depth. It provides a noninvasive and effectively nondestructive tool to examine delamination, irreversible reactions and dendrite formation during plating/stripping. Results demonstrate that it is very challenging to maintain the contact between Li metal and the SE during cycling, especially for the "anode-less" or "anode-free" configuration under low-pressure conditions. A perspective is provided on the potential improvement of the Li-ion transport, dendrite suppression, and preventing Li-metal-solid-electrolyte delamination as well as on the potential role of solid-state NMR and NDP techniques to guide these developments.

Abstract:The performance of Li metal batteries is tightly coupled to the composition and properties of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Even though the role of the SEI in battery function is well understood (e.g., it must be electronically insulating and ionically conductive, it must enable uniform Li+ flux to the electrode to prevent dendrite growth, it must accommodate the large volume changes of Li electrodeposition), the challenges associated with probing this delicate composite layer have hindered the development of Li metal batteries for practical applications. In this review, we detail how nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy can help bridge this gap in characterization due to its unique ability to describe local structure in conjunction with ion dynamics while connecting these properties to electrochemical behavior. By leveraging NMR, we can gain molecular-level insight to aid in the design of Li surfaces that enable reactive anodes for next generation, high energy density batteries.

Abstract:Lithium metal battery systems (LMBs) are being sought as an ultimate replacement to LIBs, potentially increasing the cell energy by over fifty percent due to the high capacity and low voltage of the metal anode. Analogous improvement in energy is possible with sodium metal batteries (NMBs) and with potassium metal batteries (KMBs), where existing ion insertion anodes can be replaced by plating/stripping metal. However, in all three cases safety and performance are compromised by an unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) that consumes metal ions and electrolyte, and ultimately leads to dendrites. This presentation provides a series of case studies derived from the group's LMB, NMB and KMB research on the microstructural design principles that provide for long-term cycling and fast-charge stability of metal anodes. The approaches may be categorized as the following: a) design of plating/stripping supports and templates with tuned geometry and functionality; b) design of secondary interlayers placed between the metal anode and the separator; and c) design of multifunctional hybrid separators to replace the conventional polymer separators employed with LIBs. It is demonstrated that despite appearing distinct, the efficacy of each in enabling electrochemical stability originates from three fundamental features that are directly interrelated. The wetting behavior of the electrolyte on the anode must be optimized, the wetting/stripping behavior of the metal anode on the current collector must be controlled, and a geometrically and chemically modified SEI must be established. Simultaneously achieving all three leads to stable plating/stripping, while missing even one leads to rapid dendrite growth. Cryogenic FIB cross sections and cryo-TEM are combined to yield new insight regarding film wetting behavior and early dendrite formation in optimized versus baseline specimens, analyzing growth in several representative electrolytes.

Abstract:The increasing need for portable and large-scale energy storage systems requires development of new, long lasting and highly efficient battery systems. Solid state NMR spectroscopy has emerged as an excellent method for characterizing battery materials. Yet, it is limited when it comes to probing thin interfacial layers which play a central role in the performance and lifetime of battery cells. Here we review how Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) can lift the sensitivity limitation and enable detection of the electrode-electrolyte interface, as well as the bulk of some electrode and electrolyte systems. We describe the current challenges from the point of view of materials development; considering how the unique electronic, magnetic and chemical properties differentiate battery materials from other applications of DNP in materials science. We review the current applications of exogenous and endogenous DNP from radicals, conduction electrons and paramagnetic metal ions. Finally, we provide our perspective on the opportunities and directions where battery materials can benefit from current DNP methodologies as well as project on future developments that will enable NMR investigation of battery materials with sensitivity and selectivity under ambient conditions.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries have increased energy density over standard graphite-based Li-ion anodes. However, Li metal anodes have difficulty forming stable passivation layer (called solid electrolyte interphase, SEI) leading to poor use of Li inventory. That is, LI metals require larger cathode loading, which reduces the energy density gain. A holistic approach to Li anode incorporation includes electrolyte design, mechanism understanding, and battery engineering. A factor that has not been fully appreciated is the nature of the Lithium metal itself, namely its SEI before incorporation into the battery device may affect the subsequent SEI formation. Here, we present a mechanistic study on lithium SEI formation on various lithium sources, as well as the Li cycling. We utilized dynamic impedance spectroscopy (dEIS) to probe the formation and evolution of the SEI during Li cycling of various Li sources. dEIS superimposes a multisine waveform atop the dc stimulus signal. After applying a sliding window FFT protocol that takes the complex ratio of the measured potential and current signals time-resolved complex impedance can be obtained. We will discuss the differences between the Li cycling profiles using Lipon (a glassy solid electrolyte) and a liquid electrolyte. We will relate the differences in cycling performance, particularly the SEI evolution to the surface chemistry of the as-received Li metal source. Abstract:Solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) plays a pivotal role in the performance of lithium metal anode, which is promising for high energy batteries. Understanding SEI composition is important but very challenging. Here we report on the use of synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function analysis to identify and differentiate the two elusive components, LiH and LiF, in the SEI of lithium metal anodes. LiH is identified as a component of SEI in high abundance, and the possibility of its misidentification as LiF in the literature is discussed. LiF in the SEI is found to have different structural features from LiF in bulk phase, including larger lattice parameter and smaller grain size (<3 nm). These characteristics favor Li + transport, and explain why an ionic insulator, like LiF, has been found to be a favored component for SEI. PDF analysis of the SEI reveals key amorphous components related to solvent or anion decomposition. Nickel-rich layered cathode materials with high energy density are very promising for next generation batteries when coupled with lithium metal anode. However, the practical capacities accessible are far less than the theoretical value due to their structural instability during cycling, especially when charged at high voltages. Such challenge has been attributed to the concomitant electrolyte instability and cathode structural and morphological degradation. Therefore, various approaches have been developed through electrolyte engineering and bulk cathode material modifications. In this presentation, we will report a simple interphase engineering approach by using an ionic electrolyte additive, lithium difluorophosphate (LiDFP). Through theoretical calculation, we found that self-decomposition product PO 2 F of LiDFP additive is adsorbed strongly and uniformly on the Ni-rich cathode, which is further decomposed to Li 3 PO 4 and LiF through the catalytic effect of transition metals. The new interphasial chemistry contributed from LiDFP stabilizes the bulk structure of Ni-rich cathode materials and prevents the performance degradation by suppressing the dissolution of transition metals and undesired structural changes. Even after 200 cycles with charge limit as high as 4.8 V, no rock-salt phase can be detected in LiNi 0.76 Co 0.10 Mn 0.14 O 2 (NMC76), and the cell consisting of NMC76 cathode and lithium metal anode retains 97% of the initial capacity (235 mAh/g). Various advanced characterizations were used, on both atomic and electrode levels, to reveal the mechanism how a new interphase stabilizes the layer structures in bulk electrode. The dissolution of nickel was identified to be most serious at high voltage, rather than the widely believed manganese dissolution. The transition metal dissolution can be effectively suppressed by LiDFP additive. Furthermore, the cathode surface protected by LiDFP-derived interphase is shown to regulate a more uniform lithium distribution within the bulk cathode particles and effectively mitigate the strain and crack formation. Machine-learning assisted nano-tomography discovered that such interphase-bulk interaction is most effective for those small-sized, spherically-shaped particles. Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal anodes (LMAs) are considered to be the holy grail of electrodes to enable advanced battery chemistry for energy‐intensive applications. However, the formation of Li dendrites and their intricate interplay with the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) remain unclear to date. Herein, a simple yet efficient methodology for in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation is reported, and the relationship between the SEI chemistry and the morphology of LMAs is unraveled by a combination of TEM imaging and selected area electron diffraction analysis in an unprecedented way. The authors find that the coexistence of LiF and Li3N in the SEI layer helps realize dendrite‐free Li deposition and directly visualize the deposition–dissolution behavior of individual Li deposits with different microstructures. The approach should be applicable to scrutinize a broad range of interfacial reactions in nonvolatile electrolytes (e.g., ionic liquid, glass‐, and ceramic‐based electrolytes) relevant to future energy storage devices, including magnesium secondary batteries. A new transmission electron microscopy methodology is presented to accurately monitor the morphology evolution of lithium metal anodes and their solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) under realistic operation conditions. This method combines the advantages of conventional open‐cell (high‐resolution visualization) and liquid‐cell approaches (better mimicking a real battery), which will expedite the development of next‐generation electrode materials.

Abstract:Using lithium metal as the anode is a promising way to raise the energy density of batteries, but inevitable lithium dendrite growth hinders the development of this kind of batteries. Albeit great efforts were devoted to uncovering the mystery of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), which determines the stability of the plating and stripping of lithium metal, our understanding of SEI at the atomic scale is limited due to its complex structure and composition. This work proposes a computational framework, based on the reactive force field molecular dynamics, for simulating the SEI formation. Our results suggest the SEI in the standard EC/DEC electrolyte resembles a heterogeneous mosaic structure with an organic-rich outer layer and an inorganic-rich inner layer as the consequence of the bottom-up growth sequence. When lithium nitrate is present in the electrolyte, the preferential reduction of lithium nitrate effectively regulates the electrolyte decomposition for rendering a bilayer structure with the lithium nitrate reduction products, Li 3 N and LiN x O y , on top of the amorphous polymer matrix. Although these N-containing compounds are good lithium-ion conducting materials for retaining a uniform, fast lithium-ion transport through the SEI, we observe a significant decrease in the mechanical performance due to the high-porosity structure.

Composition and Structure of the solid electrolyte interphase on Na-Ion Anodes Revealed by Exo- and Endogenous Dynamic Nuclear Polarization─NMR Spectroscopy

Abstract:Sodium ion batteries (SIB) are among the most promising devices for large scale energy storage. Their stable and long-term performance depends on the formation of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), a nanosized, heterogeneous and disordered layer, formed due to degradation of the electrolyte at the anode surface. The chemical and structural properties of the SEI control the charge transfer process at the electrode-electrolyte interface, thus, there is great interest in determining these properties for understanding, and ultimately controlling, SEI functionality. However, the study of the SEI is notoriously challenging due to its heterogeneous nature and minute quantity. In this work, we present a powerful approach for probing the SEI based on solid state NMR spectroscopy with increased sensitivity from dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP). Utilizing exogenous (organic radicals) and endogenous (paramagnetic metal ion dopants) DNP sources, we obtain not only a detailed compositional map of the SEI but also, for the first time for the native SEI, determine the spatial distribution of its constituent phases. Using this approach, we perform a thorough investigation of the SEI formed on Li4Ti5O12 used as a SIB anode. We identify a compositional gradient, from organic phases at the electrolyte interface to inorganic phases toward the anode surface. We find that the use of fluoroethylene carbonate as an electrolyte additive leads to performance degradation which can be attributed to formation of a thicker SEI, rich in NaF and carbonates. We expect that this methodology can be extended to examine other titanate anodes and new electrolyte compositions, offering a unique tool for SEI investigations to enable the development of effective and long-lasting SIBs.

Abstract:We need batteries to get the best out of renewable energies and other low-carbon energy sources, and the most promising path forward is to invest in high-energy-density battery technologies. In this regard, lithium metal is the best candidate for the anode electrode as it is the lightest metal on earth and has the lowest electrochemical potential (-3.04 V vs. SHE). However, the challenge to overcome for mass commercializing lithium-metal batteries (LMB) is stabilizing the solid electrolyte interphase that naturally grows at the electrode-electrolyte interface to avoid uncontrolled reactions leading to lithium depletion. Since the successful introduction of lithium-ion batteries (LIB), it has been known that tuning of the SEI composition and morphology is fundamental to prolong the battery life span; a well-engineered SEI layer simultaneously serves as an electron barrier and favors Li+ ion conduction across it, ensuring proper battery performance. However, the engineering of the SEI layer in LMB is more complex than its counterpart LIB batteries, given that lithium metal is overwhelmingly more reactive than graphite and the overall Li+ ion current across it is orders of magnitude higher. The up-to-date knowledge on the SEI morphology indicates that inorganic phases produced upon the decomposition of lithium salts present in the electrolyte tends to grow dominantly buried within the SEI layer, acting as an intermediate between the surviving lithium metal and the outermost organic SEI phase grown after decomposition of solvent molecules. The effect of electrolyte additives and diluents is to tweak the SEI composition. The narrative built after years of experimentation tells that proper battery functioning depends heavily on the ability of the incoming Li+ ions to desolve near the SEI outermost layer without triggering further side reactions, penetrate the inner SEI, and deposit in the anode as reduced lithium. However, the intricacies of the elementary reactions and the stage where the reduction takes place still fall beyond detailed comprehension, even though the development of in situ and operando analytical techniques has brought us a level of understanding on the subject that was unimaginable a few decades ago. In this talk, we discuss the instrumental impact that multiscale modeling techniques have played in clarifying the elementary steps of the SEI formation on pristine lithium metal, providing a comprehensive understanding of the precursors formed in the early stages of Solid-Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) growth. For instance, density functional theory (DFT) calculations have revealed that electrolyte diluents, such as TTE, previously considered inert to lithium metal, actively modify the liquid electrolyte solvation structure by weakly interacting with Li+ ions. Additionally, these diluents decompose against lithium metal, releasing fluoride ions and inundating the SEI layer with LiF. Similarly, DFT-based molecular dynamics (MD) techniques, including ab initio (AIMD) and reactive classical molecular dynamics methods (ReaxFF MD, among others), have facilitated a picoseconds (ps) scale observation of the temporal evolution of these SEI precursors, propelling a mechanistic understanding of the dynamics of the SEI formation; it is now recognized that there is an initial and rapid electrolyte decomposition occurring within the first tens of picoseconds after contact with lithium metal, preceding a longer-scale mass transfer segregation process leading to the formation of a myriad of organic and inorganic microphases within the SEI structure. However, the accessible time and space windows to MD methods fall within few hundred ps, leaving out the study of the morphological aspects of the SEI over extended cycling. In this sense, we discuss through kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) calculations the evolution of the SEI formation on lithium metal and confirm the critical role that dislocations and grain boundaries play in ensuring proper lithium plating and mobility within the SEI layer over cycling. We confirm that bulk lithium diffusion within the inorganic SEI microphases, such as LiF and Li 2 O, is significantly lower than lithium mobility across LiF/Li 2 O interfaces. We also discuss the impact of electrolyte tunning on SEI morphology and provide insights into developing an SEI formation strategy based on the electrolyte molecules electrochemical stability and their relative contents of heteroatom species, such as F and O, to seed in the SEI composition and morphology, which we believe could have a significant impact on the development of stable LMB batteries.
Operando insights into ammonium-mediated lithium metal stabilization: surface morphology modulation and enhanced SEI development

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) with graphite as an anode and lithiated transition metal oxide as a cathode are approaching their specific energy and power theoretical values. To overcome the limitations of LiBs, lithium metal anode with high specific capacity and low negative redox potential is necessary. However, practical application in rechargeable cells is hindered by uncontrolled lithium deposition manifesting, for instance, as Li dendrite growth which can cause formation of dead Li, short circuits and cell failure. The electrochemical behaviour of a protic additive (NH 4 PF 6 ) in a carbonate-based electrolyte has been investigated by operando confocal Raman spectroscopy, in situ optical microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, elucidating its functional mechanism. The ammonium cation promotes a chemical modification of the lithium metal anode-electrolyte interphase by producing an N -rich solid electrolyte interphase and chemically modifying the lithium surface morphology by electrochemical pitting. This novel method results in stable lithium deposition and stripping by a decreasing the local current density on the electrode, thus limiting dendritic deposition.

Abstract:As the research endeavors push the performance of widely used Li-ion battery to its theoretical limit, there are strong urges to develop next-generation energy storage devices. Li metal is a promising candidate battery anode material which can bring the energy density to a higher level. There are safety and cycling efficiency issues associated with the Li-metal battery (LMB), and the metal dendrite nucleation and lithium whisker formation are largely responsible for them. The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) generated from the reactions between lithium metal and battery electrolyte components can regulate the lithium-ion diffusion and deposition which protects anode materials from undesired consumptions. According to the experimental evidence, the SEI from carbonate electrolytes may contain inorganic components including Li 2 O, Li 2 CO 3 , LiF, as well as organic structures such as polymers and oligomers with carbonate and carbonyl structures. However, the exact composition and ionic diffusion properties of SEI are challenging to be directly characterized via experimental techniques. In this work, we initiated the elucidation of the SEI composition by investigating plausible reaction pathways. The inorganic structures are mainly resulted from the degradation of electrolyte solvent and salt species upon contact with the anode material. Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation was implemented to track the interfacial reduction of ethylene carbonate (EC), vinylene carbonate (VC) and lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF 6 ). Bader charge analysis demonstrated that the LiPF 6 reduction requires consecutive uptake of outside electrons, no matter such reaction happens right on the metallic surface or in electrolyte phase. The final product of the LiPF 6 degradation was determined to be Li 3 P, and the reaction thermochemistry was computed based on density functional theory (DFT). The experimentally measured battery electrochemical performance enhancement of the VC additive has been reported while the chemical mechanism behind such phenomenon was less discussed. We modeled the degradation and polymerization reactions of EC and VC molecules in the LMB environment. VC has significantly smaller energy barrier than EC to generate the lithium-carbonyl complexes and the oligomer/polymer species which takes longer time scale to form. In addition, the solvated lithium cation was found to have significant contribution to the polymerization reaction thermodynamics. The most kinetically favored pathways and products for EC and VC polymerization were identified via DFT calculations. Multiscale simulation based on the computed thermodynamic information was able to provide a glimpse of the microscopic morphology inside the SEI.
Revealing Principles for Design of Lean-Electrolyte Lithium Metal Anode Via in Situ Spectroscopy.

Abstract:Lean-electrolyte conditions are highly pursued for practical lithium (Li) metal batteries. The previous studies on the Li metal anodes, in general, exhibited good stability with a large excess of electrolyte. However, the targeted design of Li hosts under relatively low electrolyte conditions has been rarely studied so far. Herein, we have shown that electrolyte consumption severely affects the cycling stability of Li metal anode. Considering carbon hosts as typical examples, we innovatively employed in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction, in situ Raman spectroscopy, and theoretical computations to obtain a better understanding of the Li nucleation/deposition processes. We also showed the usefulness of in situ electrochemical impedance spectra to analyze interfacial fluctuation at the Li/electrolyte interface, together with nuclear magnetic resonance data to quantify electrolyte consumption. We have found that uneven Li nucleation/deposition and the crack of surface-area-derived solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) layer both lead to a great consumption of electrolyte. Then, we suggested a design principle for Li host to overcome the electrolyte loss, that is, uneven growth of the Li structure and the crack of the SEI layer must be simultaneously controlled. As a proof of concept, we demonstrated the usefulness of a 3D low-surface-area defective graphene host (L-DG) to control Li nucleation/deposition and stabilize the SEI layer, contributing to a highly reversible Li plating/stripping. As a result, such a Li host can achieve stable cycles (e.g., 1.0 mAh cm-2) with a low electrolyte loading (10 μL). This work demonstrates the necessity to design Li metal anodes under lean-electrolyte conditions and brings Li metal batteries a step closer to their practical applications.

Abstract:Accurate understanding of the chemistry of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) is key to developing new electrolytes for high-energy batteries using lithium metal (Li 0 ) anodes 1 . SEI is generally believed to be formed by the reactions between Li 0 and electrolyte 2,3 . However, our new study shows this is not the whole story. Through synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function analysis, we reveal a much more convoluted formation mechanism of SEI, which receives considerable contributions from electrolyte, cathode, moisture and native surface species on Li 0 , with highly dynamic nature during cycling. Using isotope labelling, we traced the origin of LiH to electrolyte solvent, moisture and a new source: the native surface species (LiOH) on pristine Li 0 . When lithium accessibility is very limited as in the case of anode-free cells, LiOH develops into plate-shaped large crystals during cycling. Alternatively, when the lithium source is abundant, as in the case of Li||NMC811 cells, LiOH reacts with Li 0 to form LiH and Li 2 O. While the desired anion-derived LiF-rich SEI is typically found in the concentrated electrolytes or their derivatives, we found it can also be formed in low-concentration electrolyte via the crosstalk effect, emphasizing the importance of formation cycle protocol and opening up opportunities for low-cost electrolyte development.

Abstract:Lithium metal is the ideal candidate to replace conventional carbonaceous anodes due to its high theoretical specific capacity of 3860 mAh/g and low negative thermodynamic potential of -3.040 V vs. SHE [1]. Fine tuning the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) is critical for the practical implementation of liquid lithium metal batteries [2]. The presence of particular SEI species are hypothesized to improve the coulombic efficiency and mitigate dendrite formation for enhanced lifetime and safety, respectively [2]. Recently, Zhang et al. developed a novel in-situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy method to reveal electrolyte oxidation via carbonate dehydrogenation on Ni-based oxides in Li-ion batteries [3]. We leverage this technique and apply it to the Cu side in a Li || Cu battery to probe SEI growth and evolution. In this study, we systematically change the salt, solvent and additive components of the electrolyte and monitor the organic and inorganic SEI species that form under different electrochemical conditions. Furthermore, we directly correlate the chemical composition of the SEI to cell-level coulombic efficiency [4]. Complimentary characterization techniques will be used to further resolve the chemical structure of the SEI.
