Abstract:It has recently been demonstrated (Borzani et al., 1956) that the mash obtained from Araucaria brasiliensis seeds by acid hydrolysis, when fermented by Saccharomyces cerevisiae, give alcohol yields practically constant at pH values from 2.9 to 7.2. This fact represents a considerable increase of the yeast optimum pH interval. It has also been observed (Borzani et al., 1956) that glucose and arabinose were produced by the acid hydrolysis of the A. brasiliensis seeds. The hypothesis that arabinose could be responsible for the observed facts was suggested to us by Professor Renato Fonseca Ribeiro, and was confirmed in some preliminary experiments. This study deals with the effect of arabinose on the optimum pH interval of glucose fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This report also shows that the presence of arabinose increases the fermentation rate.
High-resolution multi-parameter monitoring of microbial water quality and particles at two alpine karst springs as a basis for an early-warning system

Abstract:Karst aquifers are important resources for drinking water supply and are very vulnerable to contamination. Microbial concentrations at karst springs, in particular, often vary quickly over a short period of time. In this study, the response of microbial water quality and particle-size distribution of two alpine karst springs to rainfall events was investigated to test and validate parameters that can be used as early-warning systems for fecal contamination. At both investigated karst springs, total organic carbon, particle-size distribution (especially small particle fractions), and particle load show a good correlation to the fecal indicator bacteria E. coli and can therefore be used as a real-time indicator of fecal contamination at the investigated springs. In addition to conventional bacterial determination methods, the β-D-glucuronidase activity, which can be measured in near real-time, was used as a novel indicator parameter for fecal contamination. At the event scale, the β-D-glucuronidase (GLUC) activity shows a good correlation to E. coli and can be used as an additional real-time indicator of fecal contamination. For the studied springs, when they show two peaks in turbidity and small particles, these two parameters are suitable for an early warning system because the bacterial contamination occurs during the secondary peak of these parameters. These results highlight the vulnerability of karst aquifers and demonstrate the applicability of advanced measurement techniques in detecting fecal contamination in real-time, which is especially important given the time-consuming nature of conventional bacterial detection methods.

Abstract:The objective of this paper was to identify the incidence and extent of preferential flow at two experimental areas located in Lyon, France. We used time-lapse ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys in conjunction with automatized single-ring infiltration experiments to create three-dimensional (3D) representations of infiltrated water. In total we established three 100 cm × 100 cm GPR grids and used differenced radargrams from pre- and post-infiltration surveys to detect wetting patterns. The analyzed time-lapse GPR surveys revealed the linkage between nonuniform flow and heterogeneous soil structures and plant roots. At the first experimental area, subsurface coarse gravels acted as capillary barriers that concentrated flow into narrow pathways via funneled flow. At the second experimental area, the interpolated 3D patterns closely matched direct observation of dyed patterns, thereby validating the applied protocol. They also highlighted the important role of plant roots in facilitating preferential water movement through the subsurface. The protocol presented in this study represents a valuable tool for improving the hydraulic characterization of highly heterogeneous soils, while also alleviating some of the excessive experimental efforts currently needed to detect preferential flow pathways in the field.
A new beating-heart off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting training model.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES Training models are essential in mastering the skills required for off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB). We describe a new, high-fidelity, effective and reproducible beating-heart OPCAB training model in human cadavers. METHODS Human cadavers were embalmed according to the 'Thiel method' which allows their long-term and repeated use. The training model was constructed by bilateral ligation of the pulmonary veins, cross-clamping of the aorta, positioning of an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) in the left ventricle (LV) through the apex (tightened with pledget-reinforced purse strings) and finally placing of a fluid line in the LV through the left atrial appendage (tightened with a pledget-reinforced purse string). The LV was filled with saline to the desired pressure through the fluid line and the IABP was switched on and set to a desired frequency [usually 60-80 beats per minute (bpm)]. RESULTS A high-fidelity simulation has known limitations, but a more complex, realistic training environment with an actual beating (human) heart strengthens the entire training exercise and is of incremental value. All types of coronary artery anastomosis can be trained with this model. Training should be performed under the supervision of an experienced OPCAB surgeon and training progress is best evaluated with serial Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skills (OSATS). A score of at least 48 points on the final OSATS ('good' on all components) is recommended before trainees can start their training on patients. CONCLUSIONS The entire set-up provides a versatile training model to help develop and improve the skills required to safely perform beating heart OPCAB anastomoses.
Using natural gas content of groundwater to improve the understanding of complex thermo-mineral spring systems

Abstract:The varied gaseous composition of thermo-mineral waters emerging in a non-active zone reflects the diversity and complexity of groundwater pathways and provides important insights into their hydrogeological behaviours. The investigated geochemical content of complex thermo-mineral springs revealed the need to use dissolved gas contents as part of a multi-tracer approach to discriminate processes, geogenic (water–gas-rock interactions), abiotic (geological confinement, flow paths) and biotic activity influencing geochemical of groundwater along regional pathways. Irrespective of the dissolved element content or the water type, examining the overall concentration of dissolved gases enables an effective delineation of regional groundwater flow paths. Using dissolved gas content further contributed to the circumvention of some analytical challenges associated with conventional isotopic or geochemical techniques, often linked to the high concentration of elements such as iron, sulfate, sulfide or other naturally occurring elements content. The primary objectives are to analyse the gas composition of individual springs, to identify the origin of these gases in the groundwater, and to use this gas composition to improve the understanding of the flow patterns contributing to the geochemical diversity observed at the surface. From field investigations in a geologically and structurally complex area of Eastern Corsica (France), three types of gas contents are identified: (type 1) CH 4 & H 2 S-rich, (type 2) N 2 -rich and (type 3) CO 2 -rich. The study of these dissolved gases highlights that the wide geochemical diversity of thermo-mineral waters observed here is not only related to the mineralogical composition of the local aquifer but also involves strong and cumulative interactions along deep regional circulation pathways. This approach also reveals a common deep crustal gaseous influence characterised by N 2 production, which interacts during up flow with groundwater and then with the local metamorphic or sedimentary rock matrix. The groundwater's isotopic and geochemical contents are then altered by local lithologies encountered through both abiotic and biotic interactions. Finally, at shallow depths, phreatic groundwater can add its geochemical and isotopic footprint and dilute this complex mixture before groundwater emerges as mineral spring. This paper answers the primary objectives yet further demonstrates that using dissolved gas as a tracer of groundwater flow paths allows a deeper interpretation of surface geochemical and isotopic observations, distinguishes local from regional flow paths, and provides information about processes at the origin of groundwater diversity. The combination of tools presented in this paper (i.e., geochemical, dissolved gas, and isotopic tools) allows the establishment of a reliable regional groundwater flow scheme for thermo-mineral waters in a non-active zone. This scheme is essential to improve thermo-mineral water management, and protection to ensure their sustainable quality in front of increasing anthropogenic and climatic pressures.

Abstract:This article presents a multiphysics-based approach for a large-scale spatial reconstitution of head and tracer tests responses measured in a regional scale karst aquifer in Southern France. The main dataset consists in hydraulic heads measured in 11 wells during 6 weeks and 4 tracer tests. A pump station withdraws groundwater from this aquifer at varying flow rates during days and nights to supply water to Montpellier agglomeration, generating a periodic signal which propagates in the whole aquifer. Some of the measurements show a periodic response, some others not. As a first step, this specificity is exploited to localize spatially the preferential flow paths network with a structural deterministic inversion approach. Then, inversions of the weekly averaged head variations are performed on the first and the last weeks of the dataset (showing different drawdown trends) to assess the hydraulic diffusivity field. Finally, the tracer restitutions at the spring are inverted in order to optimize the conduits diameters associated to the fastest flow paths. The proposed approach permits a satisfying reproduction of the hydraulic heads and tracer measurements. Simulations with the optimized model on a week of the dataset not used in the inversion allows to validate the inversion result. The inverted model suggests that daily periodic responses represent efficient constraints for the localization of the preferential flows, while the integration of weekly head variations provides a characterization of the hydraulic properties between each well and the closest preferential flow paths, and tracer restitutions permit to characterize the velocities in the preferential paths.

Abstract:With the neo-metamorphosis of the residential landscape worldwide and sluggish sanitation strategies in urban environments, rudimentary on-site sanitation systems remain commonly used, especially in developing countries, despite the risks of groundwater contamination. The effective management of such water resources relies on assessment of the sensitivity of anthropized aquifers to man-made impact, including groundwater behavioural alteration, in terms of both quality and quantity. Associated with tracking of changes in land use, this study proposes an approach involving emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) as indicators of the alteration of groundwater balance due the exposure of shallow aquifers to the risks of infiltration of untreated wastewater from soak pits. This methodology was applied to the shallow aquifer beneath the urban agglomeration of Grand-Sfax (Tunisia). Combined with an updated follow-up of groundwater piezometric fluctuations in relation with inputs from surface contamination sources, the spatialisation of contamination levels by EOCs provided a clear delineation of the most impacted aquifer zones. This approach revealed a significant link between the continuous rise in piezometric levels by contributions from untreated inputs and the accumulation of high levels of contamination in groundwater. The understanding of EOC underground pathways allowed the determination of the fates and processes responsible for the diffusion of contamination throughout the studied aquifer. The ability of groundwater to reflect population life style and the use patterns of such organic molecules was also assessed. Besides revealing the legacy of persistent contamination, this approach involving EOCs as tracers with different levels of persistence provided a spatial observation of the aquifer exposure to continuous contamination processes. This approach made it possible to develop a conceptual presentation of aquifer vulnerability to urban pressures and to predict the effects of subsequent expansion of unplanned urbanisation on groundwater quality.

Abstract:Headwater streams are highly dependent on groundwater discharge to maintain low flows during dry periods and to dilute pollutants. Groundwater discharge to streams can have different flow paths, either from groundwater flowing directly to the river through the hyporheic zone or groundwater that emerges at the contact with a riparian wetland and flows mainly on the wetland surface. Differentiating these flows could be useful to assess the contribution of riparian wetlands in protecting stream water quality. The objective of this research was to expand the use of 222 Rn as a groundwater tracer for small streams in headwater catchments to distinguish flows received directly from the aquifer and through riparian wetlands. 222 Rn activities, phosphate (PO 4 3- ) and nitrate (NO 3 - ) concentrations, along with stream flows were used in a mass balance model to establish the proportions of groundwater flow that discharge to a small stream located southwest of the Paris Basin (France). This watershed is typical of headwater catchments in this region because it receives a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent at its source and its banks are occupied by many small riparian wetlands. To obtain the best accuracy of groundwater flow assessment, the field work was done during low flow conditions, where the stream flow was only 0.079 m 3 /s at the outlet. The model gives a good estimation of each flow path with 83 % of the stream baseflow originating from riparian wetlands. The large contrast in 222 Rn activity between groundwater inflow from the aquifer (mean of 21200 Bq/m 3 ) and interflows from wetlands (mean of 2310 Bq/m 3 ) renders the mass balance model sensitive to the separation of these two types of groundwater flow paths. At the head of the stream, water is characterized by high concentrations of PO 4 3- and NO 3 - due to the WWTP effluent into the stream (13 and 21 mg/L respectively). All groundwater flows are PO 4 3- free and contribute to the improvement of stream water quality. The NO 3 - cycle is more difficult to constrain because of the spatial heterogeneity in groundwater concentrations. Nevertheless, the results of the modeling approach showed that the main part of the evolution of NO 3 - concentrations along the river can be explained by the dilution of stream flow with interflows. The method developed is considered sufficiently accurate to quantify groundwater inflows for different flow paths in headwater catchments and to estimate the impact of groundwater flow paths on stream water quality.

Abstract:Tracking contaminants in karst aquifers is challenging because of the high heterogeneity encountered in carbonate rocks. Multi-tracer tests, combined with chemical and isotopic analyses, were conducted to solve a groundwater contamination incident within a complex karst aquifer in Southwest China. Results showed that: (1) the wastewater from a paper mill, public sewers, and septic tanks were the three main potential contaminant sources identified by chemical and isotopic methods; (2) a direct effect of the paper mill wastewater with high Na+ (up to 2230.5 mg/L) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations on spring water quality was confirmed by multi-tracer tests, which changed the water type from Ca-HCO3 in the 1970s to Ca-Na-HCO3 in the present study and resulted in a depleted carbon isotope value (-16.5‰); and (3) the studied aquifer is a highly complex karst system, due to two conduits crossed each other without mixing, contaminants traveled a long distance (up to 14 km) within the lower conduit, paper mill-contaminated groundwater flowed across a river bottom and discharged to the opposite bank, and an active subsurface divide occurred. After several months of operation, the groundwater restoration measure based on karst hydrogeologic conditions proved that cutting off contaminant sources for karst aquifer self-restore was effective in practice, which contributed to the decline in NH4+ (from 7.81 mg/L to 0.04 mg/L), Na+ (from 50.12 mg/L to 4.78 mg/L), and COD (from 16.42 mg/L to 0.9 mg/L) concentrations coupled with an increase in δ13C-DIC value (from -16.5‰ to -8.4‰) in the earlier contaminated karst spring. This study's integrated method is expected to screen and confirm contaminant sources within complex karst systems rapidly and effectively, thereby contributing to karst groundwater environmental management.

A systematic approach to derive natural background levels in groundwater: Application to an aquifer in North Lebanon perturbed by various pollution sources

Abstract:Several efforts have recently emerged to develop methods capable of determining groundwater natural background levels (NBLs) due to their utmost importance in assessing water quality. A recently developed systematic approach to derive NBLs is the Khadra-Stuyfzand (KS) scheme. It has a clear and standardized flow with multi-steps to eliminate biased or contaminated samples, and hence it is capable of dealing with different pollution sources as well as saltwater intrusion. This method was applied to the Koura-Tripoli-Zgharta (KTZ) Miocene aquifer of coastal North Lebanon. It derived baseline conditions for 2 physical, 16 chemical, and 3 bacteriological parameters in addition to 8 trace elements, and 83 pesticides, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, and volatile organic compounds. The results revealed the extent of anthropogenic shift from background levels, and delineated the main contaminated spots. In fact, the established groundwater baseline composition is typical of limestone aquifers with oligohaline-fresh, moderate alkalinity, calcium bicarbonate water, under freshening conditions. Nonetheless, this quality is locally degraded by microbial contamination due to wastewater disposal sites, saltwater intrusion, and minor nutrient loading from agricultural activities and/or urban development. The measured concentrations of major water ions and a variety of drinking water contaminants (e.g. nutrients, pesticides, hydrocarbons, and heavy metals) are below human health benchmarks, but the microbiological content at several spots has exceeded the permissible limits which renders the water unsuitable for domestic use, and calls for prompt mitigation measures.
Delineating the Aquifer Role in the Anthropogenic Fingerprint on the Groundwater-Dependent Ecosystem of the Biguglia Lagoon (Corsica, France)

Abstract:The Biguglia lagoon is the largest wetland of Corsica Island and is located immediately south to the densely urbanized city of Bastia. A part of the ecological preservation of the lagoon is based on the quantity and the quality of the freshwater supply coming from groundwater flows unfortunately still underestimated and misunderstood. To evaluate the role of the groundwater connexion to the lagoon hydrological behaviour, different hydrogeological investigations were carried out with a multi-tracer geochemical approach (major ions, trace elements, δ18O, δD and 3H). Main results show a clear impact of the surrounding anthropogenic activities on the groundwater quality of the alluvial plain of the Biguglia lagoon. The presence of old groundwater dated with 3H indicates a current pollution of the groundwater due to former agricultural practice. The impact of the vegetable production, which is a recent land activity, is not yet visible. However, decennial residence times of groundwater indicate in the near future, a potential threat to the drinking water supply quality as well as to the lagoon water quality by the current agricultural activities, and particularly by nitrates. In the end, a resilience analyse was led considering the groundwater as a main node of the lagoon socio-ecologic system. This transdisciplinary approach has underlined a dynamic global system, where the link between the different social influences is clearly expressed in the groundwater quality. Taking into account the groundwater resilience factors is then one of the key issues for the global management of Mediterranean lagoons.

Abstract:Tracer tests are widely used for characterizing hydrodynamics, from stream-scale to basin-wide scale. In karstic environments, the positioning of field fluorometers (or sampling) is mostly determined by the on-site configuration and setup difficulties. Most users are probably aware of the importance of this positioning for the relevance of data, and single-point tests are considered reliable. However, this importance is subjective to the user and the impact of positioning is not well quantified. This study aimed to quantify the spatial heterogeneity of tracer concentration through time in a karstic environment, and its impact on tracer test results and derived information on local hydrodynamics. Two approaches were considered: on-site tracing experiments in a karstic river, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling of tracer dispersion through a discretized karst river channel. A comparison between on-site tracer breakthrough curves and CFD results was allowed by a thorough assessment of the river geometry. The results of on-site tracer tests showed significant heterogeneities of the breakthrough curve shape from fluorometers placed along a cross-section. CFD modeling of the tracer test through the associated discretized site geometry showed similar heterogeneity and was consistent with the positioning of on-site fluorometers, thus showing that geometry is a major contributor of the spatial heterogeneity of tracer concentration through time in karstic rivers.
Identifying the origin of springs in weathered-fractured crystalline aquifers using a hydrogeophysical approach

Abstract:Over the last few decades, important advances have been made in the development of relevant hydrogeological conceptual models for crystalline aquifers, and notably for weathered-fractured crystalline aquifers. Paradoxically and contrary to other types of aquifers, these researches never aimed at characterizing springs, the places were groundwater naturally outflows from such aquifers. With such an objective, our methodological approach consisted first of a lithological and hydrogeological description of the aquifer system based on borehole data and outcrops in a representative weathered-fractured crystalline aquifer (Daloa, Ivory Coast). Next, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) has been used (after validating the appropriate inversion method) to provide the imagery of the weathering profile both below the plateaus and in the valleys where the springs outflow. Piezometric and river discharge data were also processed notably to determine the direction of groundwater flow. Results demonstrate unambiguously that the isalterites aquifer supplies the springs, and that the underlying fractured layer is not directly implied in this supply. ERT combined with borehole and field lithological data also shows that the lateritic formations (alloterites) present near surface below the plateaus, as well as the upper part of the isalterites, were eroded in the valleys, but not deep enough to let the fractured layer outcrop. This conceptual model for springs not only provides a basis for characterizing such complex aquifers, but also provides technical guidance for spring catchment and groundwater protection in these crystalline areas.

Abstract:In coastal area, raw wastewater can be directly discharged in the sea during extreme rain events or failure of the sewage network. The highly urbanized and touristic area of Nice is directly exposed to this risk. In order to protect the bathing population and to apply the European regulation (DCE, 2000), Nice municipality has decided to work on a forecasting tool of transport and fate of fecal bacterial indicators such as Escherichia coli. This paper deals with the first step of this approach which consists in developing a three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation coupled with water quality parameters. The model used is based on Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes's equations for the calculation of the velocities and water depth (TELEMAC3D), and wave energy balance equation to account for the wave induced current (TOMAWAC). Two field measurements were conducted on a real wastewater pollution coming from a sewage pipe located at −38 m depth. The first campaign has validated the vertical diffusion of the effluent through the water column by the means of variable depth samples and has stressed the hourly variability of sewage bacterial quality. Due to the lack of data regarding this last point, the model could not be fully validated. The second campaign has been designed to overcome this issue and to gather all the data needed to proceed to the validation of our hydro-ecological simulation. The comparison of the field measurements and the simulations has successfully demonstrated the accuracy of the model. But the uncertainty associated with the laboratory analysis (MPN) are high, making the calibration and validation processes a complex task. Nevertheless, further research needs to be done regarding the variability of microbial quality in order to develop an operational tool allowing the forecast of bacterial pollution. The next step of this study will be to establish the hourly variation of microbial quality in the wastewater during dry and raining periods.

Abstract:Intense rainfall and snowmelt events may affect the safety of drinking water, as large quantities of fecal material can be discharged from storm or sewage overflows or washed from the catchment into drinking water sources. This study used β-D-glucuronidase activity (GLUC) with microbial source tracking (MST) markers: human, bovine, porcine mitochondrial DNA markers (mtDNA) and human-associated Bacteroidales HF183 and chemical source tracking (CST) markers including caffeine, carbamazepine, theophylline and acetaminophen, pathogens ( Giardia, Cryptosporidium , adenovirus, rotavirus and enterovirus), water quality indicators ( Escherichia coli , turbidity) and hydrometeorological data (flowrate, precipitation) to assess the vulnerability of 3 drinking water intakes (DWIs) and identify sources of fecal contamination. Water samples were collected under baseline, snow and rain events conditions in urban and agricultural catchments (Québec, Canada). Dynamics of E. coli , HF183 and WWMPs were similar during contamination events, and concentrations generally varied over 1 order of magnitude during each event. Elevated human-associated marker levels during events demonstrated that urban DWIs were impacted by recent contamination from an upstream municipal water resource recovery facility (WRRF). In the agricultural catchment, mixed fecal pollution was observed with the occurrences and increases of enteric viruses, human bovine and porcine mtDNA during peak contaminating events. Bovine mtDNA qPCR concentrations were indicative of runoff of cattle-derived fecal pollutants to the DWI from diffuse sources following rain events. This study demonstrated that the suitability of a given MST or CST indicator depend on river and catchment characteristics. The sampling strategy using continuous online GLUC activity coupled with MST and CST markers analysis was a more reliable source indicator than turbidity to identify peak events at drinking water intakes.

Abstract:Karst aquifers are highly vulnerable to pollution because of their unique and complex hydrogeological characteristics. Within this study, measured potassium concentrations in both, the Tanour and Rasoun spring discharges were employed to quantify the component of leaked wastewater either from local olive mills (Tanour spring) or domestic wastewater (Rasoun spring). Additionally, high-resolution physico-chemical data were recorded in both springs using an online automated telemetric station to investigate the response of the Tanour and Rasoun karst aquifer to pollution events. Measured potassium concentrations during spring discharge peaks were clearly indicative of pollution events in contrast to other ions and the Chloride-Bromide mass ratio. Undiluted leaked wastewater discharge rates from the olive mills and domestic wastewater during the whole monitoring period were estimated (mean/max) to be 6.4 m3 d−1 and 93.6 m3 d−1 for Tanour spring and 9.8 m3 d−1 and 52.3 m3 d−1 for Rasoun spring, respectively.

Abstract:To mitigate groundwater level decline, managed aquifer recharge (MAR) with secondary treated wastewater (STWW) is increasingly considered and implemented. However, the effectiveness and potential risks of such systems need evaluation prior to implementation. In this study, we present a large-scale sand tank experiment to analyse processes related to the infiltration of real STWW through the vadose zone and subsequent mixing with oxic native groundwater. The varying composition of STWW from 15 infiltration cycles over six months of operation and the retention times were the main drivers of the observed processes, which were characterized by a wide range of analytical techniques such as in situ high-resolution oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) measurements, closed mass balances of solutes, characterization of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), stable nitrate isotopes analysis, as well as numerical flow and transport modelling. Depending on the composition and infiltration rates of the STWW, both nitrification and denitrification could be observed, even simultaneously at different locations in the tank. Furthermore, due to the variability of the real STWW we observed enhanced arsenic mobilisation during times of elevated phosphate concentrations of the infiltrating STWW. Additionally, uranium was mobilised in our experimental system via carbonate mineral dissolution caused by the infiltrating STWW which was undersaturated of calcite for all infiltration cycles. Overall, our results showed the importance of conducting studies with waters of complex matrix, such as real STWW, and considering mixing with groundwater to assess the full range of possible processes encountered at MAR field sites.

Abstract:An integrative interdisciplinary approach is currently developed to investigate groundwater systems in alpine and prealpine environments and how they respond to hydrological extremes such as droughts, heavy rain and floods in terms of water quantity, hydrochemical quality, and ecological status. The new approach is aimed at improving the understanding of the interaction between physical, chemical, and biological processes in groundwater responses to extreme events as well as developing indicators suitable for an integrative monitoring and management of the aquifers. For this purpose, observation wells of the existing state hydrographic monitoring net have been selected within the Austrian part of the Mur river basin, stretching from the alpine origin to the national border in the foreland. The investigation area thus comprises diverse hydrogeological settings and land-use types. The selected observation wells have long-term records of groundwater levels and are used for sampling campaigns under different hydrological conditions. Groundwater level fluctuations are evaluated using drought indices and statistical approaches, such as auto-correlation and cross-correlation with precipitation and stream stages. Our hydrochemical analyses of groundwater and surface waters also consider compounds indicative of agricultural sources (e.g., nitrate), wastewater-borne micro-pollutants, and stable isotopes of water. These indicators are used to identify different drivers controlling water origin and quality. The ecological status is characterized using microbiological measures, such as total number of bacteria and microbial activity, groundwater fauna, and the qualitative composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM). First results demonstrate a deterioration of water quality from groundwater to surface water and from the alpine region towards the foreland, corresponding to the more intense agricultural and urban land use in the foreland. Linkages between water quality and hydrological conditions are currently being evaluated and will be further examined using UV-Vis spectrometry for high-resolution in-situ monitoring of water quality changes (DOM and nitrate) at selected observation wells.

Abstract:Infiltration of effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) into groundwater can be a source of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs), such as pharmaceutical compounds, that are not fully removed during the treatment processes. A multi-tracer approach, based on hydrogeochemical, isotopic, and organic tracers, is applied in the Vistrenque Aquifer (Gard, France) to assess the dispersion of such unintentional plumes and its potential implication on groundwater quality for CECs in a small catchment area. In this area, a point source of WWTP effluent causes contaminant infiltration and unintentional transfer to the aquifer. This strong impact of an urban effluent was revealed from the Br/Cl ratio, boron concentrations and δ 11 B isotopic signature of the groundwater in the direct vicinity of the infiltration point. With increasing distance from that point, dilution with groundwater rapidly attenuates the urban signal from these hydrogeochemical and isotopic tracers. Nevertheless, a gadolinium anomaly, resulting from discharges of urban wastewater containing the contrast agents used for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), highlights the presence of a wastewater plume further along the flow line, that comes with a series of organic molecules, including pharmaceutical residues. Monitoring persistent or reactive molecules along the plume provides a more detailed understanding of the transfer of CECs into groundwater bodies. This highlights the relevance of pharmaceutical compounds as co-tracers for WWTP plume delineation. The present multi-tracer approach for groundwater resource vulnerability towards CECs allows a more in-depth understanding of contaminant transfer and their fate in groundwater.
