Abstract:Floral resources for native pollinators that live in wildland settings are diverse and vary across and within growing seasons. Understanding floral resource dynamics and management is becoming increasingly important as honeybee farms seek public land for summer pasture. Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUASs) present a viable approach for accurate broad floristic surveys and present an additional solution to more traditional alternative methods of vegetation assessment. This methodology was designed as a simplified approach using tools frequently available to land managers. The images of three subalpine meadows were captured from a DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone platform three times over the growing season in 2019 in Sanpete County, Utah. The images were composited using Pix4D software 4.5.6and classified using a simple supervised approach in ENVI 4.8 and ArcGIS Pro 2.4.3 These same meadows were assessed using two traditional ocular methods of vegetation cover–meter-squared quadrats and macroplot estimation. The areas assessed with these methods were compared side by side with their classified counterparts from drone imagery. Classified images were not only found to be highly accurate when detecting overall floral cover and floral color groups (76–100%), but they were also strongly correlated with quadrat estimations, suggesting that these methods used in tandem may be a conducive strategy toward increased accuracy and efficiency when determining floral cover at broad spatial scales.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial systems offer a cost-effective and reproducible method for monitoring natural resources in expansive areas. But the transferability of developed models, which are often based on single snapshots, is rarely tested. This is particularly relevant in rangelands where forage resources are inherently patchy in space and time, which may limit model transfer. Here, we investigated the accuracy of drone-based models in estimating key proxies of forage provision across two land tenure systems and between two periods of the growing season in semi-arid rangelands. We tested case-specific models and a landscape model, with the expectation that the landscape model performs better than the case-specific models as it captures the highest variability expected in the rangeland system. The landscape model did achieve the lowest error when predicting herbaceous biomass and predicted land cover with better or similar accuracy to the case-specific models. This reinforces the importance of incorporating the widest variation of conditions in predictive models. This study contributes to understanding model transferability in drier rangeland systems characterized by spatial and temporal heterogeneity. By advancing the integration of drone technology for accurate monitoring of such dynamic ecosystems, this research contributes to sustainable rangeland management practices.

Abstract:Accurate estimation of the shrub above-ground biomass (AGB) is an essential basis for determining carbon storage and monitoring desertification risk in arid ecosystems. However, significant uncertainties and biases exist in large-scale monitoring of desert AGB due to the scale mismatch and spatio-temporal topological errors be-tween the coarse resolution of satellite images and the limited area that can be surveyed via ground measurements. The rapid development of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology has the prospective advantage of multi-scale vegetation observation. However, its potential to bridge the gap between satellites and the ground in desert AGB estimation has not yet been explored. This study developed a procedure to fill the gap between satellite and ground measurements based on low-cost and easy-to-use UAV visible-light technology in typical desert shrub communities in Inner Mongolia, China. First, canopy area (CA), canopy maximum height (CH), and canopy volume (CV) metrics derived from UAV-RGB (Red, Green, Blue) images, coupled with structure-from -motion photogrammetry, were used to invert the UAV-based AGB. Then, the UAV-based AGB data were aggregated to different scales to align with satellite data. Here, we focused on examining the performance of generalized additive models between the upscaled UAV-based AGB and vegetation indices (VIs) generated from PlanetScope (resolution: 3 m), Sentinel-2A MSI (resolution: 10 m, 20 m), and Landsat 8 OLI (resolution: 30 m). Finally, we investigated the effects of scale and spectra in the upscaling and modeling process. Results showed that the UAV-based AGB linear prediction models developed by the CV metric performed best for Reaumuria soongarica (R-2 = 0.749, RMSE = 65.5 g) and Salsola passerina (R-2 = 0.919, RMSE = 56.7 g), which allowed for accurately mapping the desert AGB at the individual plant level with ultra-high resolution (2 cm). The performance of satellite biomass models was excellent based on the upscaled UAV-based AGB and VIs (best-performing models for different satellites: adjusted R-2 = 0.625-0.934, RMSE = 35.1-119.1 g/m(2)). As the resolution of satellite data increases, the increase in variance is a big scale-related challenge in AGB model performance evaluation. It is worth noting that the UAV-based AGB data are unmodifiable due to their area-independent nature, which can avoid the scale-related effect. Moreover, the satellite VIs most closely related to the desert AGB were associated with Red, NIR, and Red-Edge bands. Specifically, we recommend the Red-Edge band when using Sentinel-2A data. This study proves that UAV technology can not only provide exhaustive information on vegetation biomass but also can train and validate satellite data beyond individual UAV observations, which can significantly improve large-scale biomass monitoring if widely applied in the future.
Short-range multispectral imaging is an inexpensive, fast, and accurate approach to estimate biodiversity in a temperate calcareous grassland

Abstract:Image sensing technologies are rapidly increasing the cost-effectiveness of biodiversity monitoring efforts. Species differences in the reflectance of electromagnetic radiation can be used as a surrogate estimate plant biodiversity using multispectral image data. However, these efforts are often hampered by logistical difficulties in broad-scale implementation. Here, we investigate the utility of multispectral imaging technology from commercially available unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs, or drones) in estimating biodiversity metrics at a fine spatial resolution (0.1-0.5 cm pixel resolution) in a temperate calcareous grassland in Oxfordshire, UK. We calculate a suite of moments (coefficient of variation, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis) for the distribution of radiance from multispectral images at five wavelength bands (Blue 450 ± 16 nm; Green 560 ± 16 nm; Red 650 ± 16 nm; Red Edge 730 ± 16 nm; Near Infrared 840 ± 16 nm) and test their effectiveness at estimating ground-truthed biodiversity metrics from in situ botanical surveys for 37-1 × 1 m quadrats. We find positive associations between the average coefficient of variation in spectral radiance and both the Shannon-Weiner and Simpson's biodiversity indices. Furthermore, the average coefficient of variation in spectral radiance is consistent and highly repeatable across sampling days and recording heights. Positive associations with biodiversity indices hold irrespective of the image recording height (2-8 m), but we report reductions in estimates of spectral diversity with increases to UAV recording height. UAV imaging reduced sampling time by a factor of 16 relative to in situ botanical surveys. We demonstrate the utility of multispectral radiance moments as an indicator of biodiversity in this temperate calcareous grassland at a fine spatial resolution using a widely available UAV monitoring system with a coarse spectral resolution. The use of UAV technology with multispectral sensors has far-reaching potential to provide cost-effective and high-resolution monitoring of biodiversity.

Abstract:Abstract Remote sensing is widely used for land cover classification applications. This technology supports the development of land management practices and policies to achieve conservation and economic goals in agricultural landscapes. In animal production, remote sensing aids in reducing grassland degradation and enhancing livestock and crop production. The objective of this work is to discuss recent satellite- and drone-based remote sensing applications for grassland mapping in the Canadian Prairies. Using a satellite-based approach, the agreement between remotely sensed land cover maps and non-spatial government records was assessed for public agricultural Crown lands in southern Manitoba. Two different land cover classification products derived from satellite imagery [i.e., the Manitoba Grassland Inventory (MGI) prepared by the Province of Manitoba and the Annual Crop Inventory (ACI) prepared by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada] were merged into a single mosaic covering the entire Agro-Manitoba region. Non-spatial official records were georeferenced and summarized through parcel delineation using geographic information system (GIS) and R programming tools. Comparison of the two datasets revealed low agreement between related grassland classes (i.e., forests and shrublands; and native and tame grasslands) due to spectral similarities. However, grouping these related vegetation types into broader categories (i.e., forests and shrublands as woody vegetation; native and tame grasslands as grassy vegetation) significantly improved overall agreement, with a difference of less than 3% observed between remotely sensed datasets and official records. The derived grassland classification was then used to assess the grazing status of the agricultural Crown lands by estimating stocking rates in animal unit months (AUM) and utilizing historical yield data available from three separate field surveys conducted between 2004 and 2020 across the region. Average carrying capacities ranged from 0.71 AUM/ha to 1.99 AUM/ha. Overall, the analysis using remotely sensed data indicated that the forage resources in the Crown lands were underutilized by 45%. To further explore the potential of using high-resolution remote sensing to map grasslands, ongoing research involves the use of a drone-mounted hyperspectral sensor (HySpex Mjolnir VS-620) covering a spectral range from 400 to 2,500 nm across 490 spectral channels. This sensor enables grassland mapping at significantly greater spatial and spectral resolutions. Monthly surveys during the snow-free period will be conducted in 12 study sites across the Agro-Manitoba region in 2024 and 2025, with biomass samples collected to model grassland distribution and productivity. The outcomes of this study will offer critical insights into leveraging specific wavelengths for grassland mapping and strategies for extrapolating these insights to larger geographical areas using satellite imagery. Overall, the efforts described above underscore the significance of remote sensing approaches in managing agricultural landscapes and provide valuable insights for land managers, policymakers, and stakeholders to promote sustainable agricultural production in grasslands.

Abstract:The tools available to farmers to manage grazed pastures and adjust forage demand to grass growth are generally rather static. Unmanned aerial systems (UASs) are interesting versatile tools that can provide relevant 3D information, such as sward height (3D structure), or even describe the physical condition of pastures through the use of spectral information. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of UAS to characterize a pasture’s sward height and above-ground biomass at a very fine spatial scale. The pasture height provided by UAS products showed good agreement (R2 = 0.62) with a reference terrestrial light detection and ranging (LiDAR) dataset. We tested the ability of UAS imagery to model pasture biomass based on three different combinations: UAS sward height, UAS sward multispectral reflectance/vegetation indices, and a combination of both UAS data types. The mixed approach combining the UAS sward height and spectral data performed the best (adj. R2 = 0.49). This approach reached a quality comparable to that of more conventional non-destructive on-field pasture biomass monitoring tools. As all of the UAS variables used in the model fitting process were extracted from spatial information (raster data), a high spatial resolution map of pasture biomass was derived based on the best fitted model. A sward height differences map was also derived from UAS-based sward height maps before and after grazing. Our results demonstrate the potential of UAS imagery as a tool for precision grazing study applications. The UAS approach to height and biomass monitoring was revealed to be a potential alternative to the widely used but time-consuming field approaches. While reaching a similar level of accuracy to the conventional field sampling approach, the UAS approach provides wall-to-wall pasture characterization through very high spatial resolution maps, opening up a new area of research for precision grazing.

Abstract:Analyzing irrigation patterns to promote efficient water use in urban areas is challenging. Analysis of irrigation by remote sensing (AIRS) combines multispectral aerial imagery, evapotranspiration data, and ground-truth measurements to overcome these challenges. We demonstrate AIRS on eight neighborhoods in Weber County, Utah, using 0.6 m National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) and 0.07 m drone imagery, reference evapotranspiration (ET), and water use records. We calculate the difference between the actual and hypothetical water required for each parcel and compare water use over three time periods (2018, 2021, and 2023). We find that the quantity of overwatering, as well as the number of customers overwatering, is decreasing over time. AIRS provides repeatable estimates of irrigated area and irrigation demand that allow water utilities to track water user habits and landscape changes over time and, when controlling for other variables, see if water conservation efforts are effective. In terms of image analysis, we find that (1) both NAIP and drone imagery are sufficient to measure irrigated area in urban settings, (2) the selection of a threshold value for the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) becomes less critical for higher-resolution imagery, and (3) irrigated area measurement can be enhanced by combining NDVI with other tools such as building footprint extraction, object classification, and deep learning.

Abstract:<p>The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to map and monitor the environment has increased sharply in the last few years. Many individuals and organizations have purchased consumer‐grade UAVs, and commonly acquire aerial photographs to map land cover. The resulting ultra‐high‐resolution (sub‐decimeter‐resolution) imagery has high information content, but automating the extraction of this information to create accurate, wall‐to‐wall land‐cover maps is quite difficult. We introduce image‐processing workflows that are based on open‐source software and can be used to create land‐cover maps from ultra‐high‐resolution aerial imagery. We compared four machine‐learning workflows for classifying images. Two workflows were based on random forest algorithms. Of these, one used a pixel‐by‐pixel approach available in ilastik, and the other used image segments and was implemented with R and the Orfeo ToolBox. The other two workflows used fully connected neural networks and convolutional neural networks implemented with Nenetic. We applied the four workflows to aerial photographs acquired in the Great Basin (western USA) at flying heights of 10 m, 45 m and 90 m above ground level. Our focal cover type was cheatgrass (<i>Bromus tectorum</i>), a non‐native invasive grass that changes regional fire dynamics. The most accurate workflow for classifying ultra‐high‐resolution imagery depends on diverse factors that are influenced by image resolution and land‐cover characteristics, such as contrast, landscape patterns and the spectral texture of the land‐cover types being classified. For our application, the ilastik workflow yielded the highest overall accuracy (0.82–0.89) as assessed by pixel‐based accuracy.</p>

Abstract:Abstract Remotely sensed imagery from various collection platforms (e.g., satellites, crewed and uncrewed aircraft) are used by biologists and other conservation personnel to support management activities ranging from monitoring invasive species to assessing land cover and vegetation characteristics. While remote sensing-based vegetation indices and models have been developed and used for some management applications, straightforward visual interpretation of imagery by on-the-ground personnel may be a pragmatic approach for obtaining time-sensitive and spatially relevant information to support and guide local management activities. Our primary objective was to qualitatively assess our ability to identify patches of target invasive plant species based on simple visual interpretation of high-resolution aerial imagery. We also sought to compare the high-resolution imagery to widely available imagery (e.g., National Agriculture Imagery Program) to determine the efficacy of each for assessing vegetation communities and land-cover features in support of management activities. To accomplish these objectives, we obtained high-resolution imagery and visually scanned and assessed the imagery using standard geographic information system software. We were able to differentiate patches of crownvetch Securigera varia (L.) Lassen and wild parsnip Pastinaca sativa L., but not spotted knapweed Centaurea stoebe L. or leafy spurge Euphorbia esula L. The relative success in identifying these species was related to plant characteristics (e.g., flower color and morphology, height), time of year (phenology), patch size and density, and potentially site characteristics such density of the underlying vegetation (e.g., grasses), substrate color characteristics (i.e., color contrast with flowers), and physical disturbance. Our straightforward, qualitative assessment suggests that visual interpretation of high-resolution imagery, but not some lower-resolution imagery, may be an efficient and effective tool for supporting local invasive species management through activities such as monitoring known patches, identifying undetected infestations, assessing management actions, guiding field work, or prioritizing on-the-ground monitoring activities.

Abstract:Fractional vegetation cover (FVC) is a vital indicator for monitoring regional vegetation and ecology. Although satellite remote sensing is used to monitor long-term changes in regional FVC, its applications are limited by the spatial resolution. Moreover, for unmanned aerial systems (UASs), obtaining long-term and large-scale images is difficult, and the efficiency of the synergy between UAS and satellite data for long-term FVC monitoring is limited. This article considered a mining area with extreme changes in vegetation as an example and proposed an efficient approach called multiple spatiotemporal-scale FVC prediction (MSFP) for long-term FVC monitoring in the region, which is based on the synergy of high spatial-resolution UAS data with high temporal-resolution Landsat data. First, we used the UAS imagery of several typical mining areas in Qianxi County of China collected in 2021, from which the vegetation information was extracted. Second, the 2-D Gaussian sampling was applied to aggregate, that is, to join/connect them into Landsat pixels. The vegetation index (VI) calculated from contemporary Landsat imagery was further used with the aggregated FVC of each satellite pixel. Finally, the VIs from the satellite imagery for different years were calibrated. The analysis demonstrated that: first, the proposed MSFP yielded improved the coefficient of determination (by 0.437) and decreased root-mean-square error (by 0.200) than the traditional dimidiate pixel method based on satellite imagery; second, the UAS imagery for few typical areas was used to predict the FVC of the large-scale area, thereby providing fine-scale vegetation information; third, the MSFP achieved high accuracy and long-term FVC monitoring by interyear calibration of VI calculated from Landsat data. This article paves the way toward accurate long-term monitoring of regional FVC. The demonstrated methodological framework is simple and operable, thereby o- ening the prospects for its applications in other environments.

Integrating Biological Data into Autonomous Remote Sensing Systems for In Situ Imageomics: A Case Study for Kenyan Animal Behavior Sensing with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)

Abstract:In situ imageomics leverages machine learning techniques to infer biological traits from images collected in the field, or in situ, to study individuals organisms, groups of wildlife, and whole ecosystems. Such datasets provide real-time social and environmental context to inferred biological traits, which can enable new, data-driven conservation and ecosystem management. The development of machine learning techniques to extract biological traits from images are impeded by the volume and quality data required to train these models. Autonomous, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), are well suited to collect in situ imageomics data as they can traverse remote terrain quickly to collect large volumes of data with greater consistency and reliability compared to manually piloted UAV missions. However, little guidance exists on optimizing autonomous UAV missions for the purposes of remote sensing for conservation and biodiversity monitoring. The UAV video dataset curated by KABR: In-Situ Dataset for Kenyan Animal Behavior Recognition from Drone Videos required three weeks to collect, a time-consuming and expensive endeavor. Our analysis of KABR revealed that a third of the videos gathered were unusable for the purposes of inferring wildlife behavior. We analyzed the flight telemetry data from portions of UAV videos that were usable for inferring wildlife behavior, and demonstrate how these insights can be integrated into an autonomous remote sensing system to track wildlife in real time. Our autonomous remote sensing system optimizes the UAV's actions to increase the yield of usable data, and matches the flight path of an expert pilot with an 87% accuracy rate, representing an 18.2% improvement in accuracy over previously proposed methods.

Abstract:Current forest monitoring technologies including satellite remote sensing, manned/piloted aircraft, and observation towers leave uncertainties about a wildfire's extent, behavior, and conditions in the fire's near environment, particularly during its early growth. Rapid mapping and real-time fire monitoring can inform in-time intervention or management solutions to maximize beneficial fire outcomes. Drone systems' unique features of 3D mobility, low flight altitude, and fast and easy deployment make them a valuable tool for early detection and assessment of wildland fires, especially in remote forests that are not easily accessible by ground vehicles. In addition, the lack of abundant, well-annotated aerial datasets – in part due to unmanned aerial vehicles' (UAVs') flight restrictions during prescribed burns and wildfires – has limited research advances in reliable data-driven fire detection and modeling techniques. While existing wildland fire datasets often include either color or thermal fire images, here we present (1) a multi-modal UAV-collected dataset of dual-feed side-by-side videos including both RGB and thermal images of a prescribed fire in an open canopy pine forest in Northern Arizona and (2) a deep learning-based methodology for detecting fire and smoke pixels at accuracy much higher than the usual single-channel video feeds. The collected images are labeled to "fire" or "no-fire" frames by two human experts using side-by-side RGB and thermal images to determine the label. To provide context to the main dataset's aerial imagery, the included supplementary dataset provides a georeferenced pre-burn point cloud, an RGB orthomosaic, weather information, a burn plan, and other burn information. A Drone-Powered Deep Learning Methodology for High Precision Remote Sensing in California’s Coastal Shrubs

Abstract:Wildland conservation efforts require accurate maps of plant species distribution across large spatial scales. High-resolution species mapping is difficult in diverse, dense plant communities, where extensive ground-based surveys are labor-intensive and risk damaging sensitive flora. High-resolution satellite imagery is available at scales needed for plant community conservation across large areas, but can be cost prohibitive and lack resolution to identify species. Deep learning analysis of drone-based imagery can aid in accurate classification of plant species in these communities across large regions. This study assessed whether drone-based imagery and deep learning modeling approaches could be used to map species in complex chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and oak woodland communities. We tested the effectiveness of random forest, support vector machine, and convolutional neural network (CNN) coupled with object-based image analysis (OBIA) for mapping in diverse shrublands. Our CNN + OBIA approach outperformed random forest and support vector machine methods to accurately identify tree and shrub species, vegetation gaps, and communities, even distinguishing two congeneric shrub species with similar morphological characteristics. Similar accuracies were attained when applied to neighboring sites. This work is key to the accurate species identification and large scale mapping needed for conservation research and monitoring in chaparral and other wildland plant communities. Uncertainty in model application is associated with less common species and intermixed canopies.
Combining Multi-View UAV Photogrammetry, Thermal Imaging, and Computer Vision Can Derive Cost-Effective Ecological Indicators for Habitat Assessment

Abstract:Recent developments in Unmanned Aircraft Vehicles (UAVs), thermal imaging, and Auto-machine learning (AutoML) have shown high potential for precise wildlife surveys but have rarely been studied for habitat assessment. Here, we propose a framework that leverages these advanced techniques to achieve cost-effective habitat quality assessment from the perspective of actual wildlife community usage. The framework exploits vision intelligence hidden in the UAV thermal images and AutoML methods to achieve cost-effective wildlife distribution mapping, and then derives wildlife use indicators to imply habitat quality variance. We conducted UAV-based thermal wildlife surveys at three wetlands in the Rainwater Basin, Nebraska. Experiments were set to examine the optimal protocols, including various flight designs (61 and 122 m), feature types, and AutoML. The results showed that UAV images collected at 61 m with a spatial resolution of 7.5 cm, combined with Faster R-CNN, returned the optimal wildlife mapping (more than 90% accuracy). Results also indicated that the vision intelligence exploited can effectively transfer the redundant AutoML adaptation cycles into a fully automatic process (with around 33 times efficiency improvement for data labeling), facilitating cost-effective AutoML adaptation. Eventually, the derived ecological indicators can explain the wildlife use status well, reflecting potential within- and between-habitat quality variance.

Abstract:In recent years, technological advances have led to the increasing use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for forestry applications. One emerging field for drone application is forest health monitoring (FHM). Common approaches for FHM involve small-scale resource-extensive fieldwork combined with traditional remote sensing platforms. However, the highly dynamic nature of forests requires timely and repetitive data acquisition, often at very high spatial resolution, where conventional remote sensing techniques reach the limits of feasibility. UAVs have shown that they can meet the demands of flexible operation and high spatial resolution. This is also reflected in a rapidly growing number of publications using drones to study forest health. Only a few reviews exist which do not cover the whole research history of UAV-based FHM. Since a comprehensive review is becoming critical to identify research gaps, trends, and drawbacks, we offer a systematic analysis of 99 papers covering the last ten years of research related to UAV-based monitoring of forests threatened by biotic and abiotic stressors. Advances in drone technology are being rapidly adopted and put into practice, further improving the economical use of UAVs. Despite the many advantages of UAVs, such as their flexibility, relatively low costs, and the possibility to fly below cloud cover, we also identified some shortcomings: (1) multitemporal and long-term monitoring of forests is clearly underrepresented; (2) the rare use of hyperspectral and LiDAR sensors must drastically increase; (3) complementary data from other RS sources are not sufficiently being exploited; (4) a lack of standardized workflows poses a problem to ensure data uniformity; (5) complex machine learning algorithms and workflows obscure interpretability and hinders widespread adoption; (6) the data pipeline from acquisition to final analysis often relies on commercial software at the expense of open-source tools.

Assessment of Canopy Health with Drone-Based Orthoimagery in a Southern Appalachian Red Spruce Forest

Abstract:Consumer-grade drone-produced digital orthoimagery is a valuable tool for conservation management and enables the low-cost monitoring of remote ecosystems. This study demonstrates the applicability of RGB orthoimagery for the assessment of forest health at the scale of individual trees in a 46-hectare plot of rare southern Appalachian red spruce forest on Whitetop Mountain, Virginia. We used photogrammetric Structure from Motion software Pix4Dmapper with drone-collected imagery to generate a mosaic for point cloud reconstruction and orthoimagery of the plot. Using 3-band RBG digital orthoimagery, we visually classified 9402 red spruce individuals, finding 8700 healthy (92.5%), 251 declining/dying (2.6%), and 451 dead (4.8%). We mapped individual spruce trees in each class and produced kernel density maps of health classes (live, dead, and dying). Our approach provided a nearly gap-free assessment of the red spruce canopy in our study site, versus a much more time-intensive field survey. Our maps provided useful information on stand mortality patterns and canopy gaps that could be used by managers to identify optimal locations for selective thinning to facilitate understory sapling regeneration. This approach, dependent mainly on an off-the-shelf drone system and visual interpretation of orthoimagery, could be applied by land managers to measure forest health in other spruce, or possibly spruce-fir, communities in the Appalachians. Our study highlights the usefulness of drone-produced orthoimagery for conservation monitoring, presenting a valid and accessible protocol for the monitoring and assessment of forest health in remote spruce, and possibly other conifer, populations. Adoption of drone-based monitoring may be especially useful in light of climate change and the possible displacement of southern Appalachian red spruce (and spruce-fir) ecosystems by the upslope migration of deciduous trees.

Abstract:Large‐scale disturbances, such as megafires, motivate restoration at equally large extents. Measuring the survival and growth of individual plants plays a key role in current efforts to monitor restoration success. However, the scale of modern restoration (e.g., >10,000 ha) challenges measurements of demographic rates with field data. In this study, we demonstrate how unoccupied aerial system (UAS) flights can provide an efficient solution to the tradeoff of precision and spatial extent in detecting demographic rates from the air. We flew two, sequential UAS flights at two sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) common gardens to measure the survival and growth of individual plants. The accuracy of Bayesian‐optimized segmentation of individual shrub canopies was high (73–95%, depending on the year and site), and remotely sensed survival estimates were within 10% of ground‐truthed survival censuses. Stand age structure affected remotely sensed estimates of growth; growth was overestimated relative to field‐based estimates by 57% in the first garden with older stands, but agreement was high in the second garden with younger stands. Further, younger stands (similar to those just after disturbance) with shorter, smaller plants were sometimes confused with other shrub species and bunchgrasses, demonstrating a need for integrating spectral classification approaches that are increasingly available on affordable UAS platforms. The older stand had several merged canopies, which led to an underestimation of abundance but did not bias remotely sensed survival estimates. Advances in segmentation and UAS structure from motion photogrammetry will enable demographic rate measurements at management‐relevant extents.

Abstract:Unravelling slow ecosystem migration patterns requires a fundamental understanding of the broad-scale climatic drivers, which are further modulated by fine-scale heterogeneities just outside established ecosystem boundaries. While modern Unoccupied Aerial Vehicle (UAV) remote sensing approaches enable us to monitor local scale ecotone dynamics in unprecedented detail, they are often underutilised as a temporal snapshot of the conditions on site. In this study in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, we demonstrate how the combination of multispectral and thermal data, as well as LiDAR data (2019), supplemented by three decades (1991–2021) of treeline transect data can add great value to field monitoring campaigns by putting seedling regeneration patterns at treeline into a spatially explicit context. Orthorectification and mosaicking of RGB and multispectral imagery produced spatially extensive maps of the subalpine area (~4 ha) with low spatial offset (Craigieburn: 6.14 ± 4.03 cm; Mt Faust: 5.11 ± 2.88 cm, mean ± standard error). The seven multispectral bands enabled a highly detailed delineation of six ground cover classes at treeline. Subalpine shrubs were detected with high accuracy (up to 90%), and a clear identification of the closed forest canopy (Fuscospora cliffortioides, >95%) was achieved. Two thermal imaging flights revealed the effect of existing vegetation classes on ground-level thermal conditions. UAV LiDAR data acquisition at the Craigieburn site allowed us to model vegetation height profiles for ~6000 previously classified objects and calculate annual fine-scale variation in the local solar radiation budget (20 cm resolution). At the heart of the proposed framework, an easy-to-use extrapolation procedure was used for the vegetation monitoring datasets with minimal georeferencing effort. The proposed method can satisfy the rapidly increasing demand for high spatiotemporal resolution mapping and shed further light on current treeline recruitment bottlenecks. This low-budget framework can readily be expanded to other ecotones, allowing us to gain further insights into slow ecotone dynamics in a drastically changing climate.

Abstract:Aboveground biomass (AGB) is an important indicator of the grassland ecosystem. It can be used to evaluate the grassland productivity and carbon stock. Satellite remote sensing technology is useful for monitoring the dynamic changes in AGB across a wide range of grasslands. However, due to the scale mismatch between satellite observations and ground surveys, significant uncertainties and biases exist in mapping grassland AGB from satellite data. This is also a common problem in low- and medium-resolution satellite remote sensing modeling that has not been effectively solved. The rapid development of uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) technology offers a way to solve this problem. In this study, we developed a method with UAV and satellite synergies for estimating grassland AGB that filled the gap between satellite observation and ground surveys and successfully mapped the grassland AGB in the Hulunbuir meadow steppe in the northeast of Inner Mongolia, China. First, based on the UAV hyperspectral data and ground survey data, the UAV-based AGB was estimated using a combination of typical vegetation indices (VIs) and the leaf area index (LAI), a structural parameter. Then, the UAV-based AGB was aggregated as a satellite-scale sample set and used to model satellite-based AGB estimation. At the same time, spatial information was incorporated into the LAI inversion process to minimize the scale bias between UAV and satellite data. Finally, the grassland AGB of the entire experimental area was mapped and analyzed. The results show the following: (1) random forest (RF) had the best performance compared with simple regression (SR), partial least squares regression (PLSR) and back-propagation neural network (BPNN) for UAV-based AGB estimation, with an R2 of 0.80 and an RMSE of 76.03 g/m2. (2) Grassland AGB estimation through introducing LAI achieved higher accuracy. For UAV-based AGB estimation, the R2 was improved by an average of 10% and the RMSE was reduced by an average of 9%. For satellite-based AGB estimation, the R2 was increased from 0.70 to 0.75 and the RMSE was decreased from 78.24 g/m2 to 72.36 g/m2. (3) Based on sample aggregated UAV-based AGB and an LAI map, the accuracy of satellite-based AGB estimation was significantly improved. The R2 was increased from 0.57 to 0.75, and the RMSE was decreased from 99.38 g/m2 to 72.36 g/m2. This suggests that UAVs can bridge the gap between satellite observations and field measurements by providing a sufficient training dataset for model development and AGB estimation from satellite data.
