Abstract:The inlet, isolation section, and other internal flow components are important parts of the aircraft propulsion system. Their performances affect the stability of the entire propulsion system. According to those components, complicated shock wave/boundary layer interaction (SBLI), flow separation, and secondary flow phenomena would occur. The commonly used turbulence models, SA and SST, cannot predict the anisotropy of turbulence. This deficiency makes the calculated results differ significantly from the experimental results and cannot accurately predict their aerodynamic performance. This paper validates the feasibility and effectiveness of the turbulence models based on quadratic constitutive relation (QCR) correction applied to the flow of square duct, compression corners, diffusing 3D S-Duct, and axisymmetric cylindrical isolator. This can support future calculations of complex flow fields with flow separation and secondary flow phenomena in the subsonic or supersonic inlet. The results show that the turbulence model with QCR correction is better than the original turbulence model. Among them, the SA-QCR2020 turbulence model is the best, which is able to predict the presence of secondary flows and large boundary layer separated flows well.

Abstract:Travelling by air had become a popular and an important way for people. The air distribution in aircraft cabin, especially the evolution of instantaneous flow field, was crucial for determining the disease transmission and thermal comfort. However, the instantaneous characteristics of flow field in aircraft cabin was seldom reported and analysed by researchers. In this paper, the Renormalization Group (RNG) k-ɛ model, V2f model, large-eddy simulation (LES) and detached-eddy-simulation (DES) model were used to investigate the instantaneous characteristics of flow field in B737-200 cabin model. The stability of these flow fields were analysed and qualitatively compared with the PIV experimental results which showed high unsteadiness and unstability. Though the RNG k-ɛ model and V2f model obtained stable flow fields with very low computing time afforded, they couldn’t capture the unstable characteristics of flow field. The LES, with high cost which was difficult to accept, and the DES, with appropriate computing time afforded, revealed the strong unsteady characteristics and high asymmetry of the flow fields in the aircraft cabin. The simulated result with LES could be used to adjust the RANS simulations for widely used in engineering design of aircraft cabin. The DES model also was a promising model with appropriate computing time afforded.
Numerical Simulation of Two Coalescing Turbulent Forced Plumes in Linearly Stratified Fluids

Abstract:A computational fluid dynamic model that can solve the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and the species transport equation is developed to simulate two coalescing turbulent forced plumes, which are released with initial momentum and buoyancy flux into a linearly stable stratified environment. The velocity fields, turbulence structures, and entrainment of two plumes with different source separations and source buoyancy fluxes are analyzed quantitatively, in comparison with a series of physical experiments. An empirical parameterization is proposed to predict the amplification of the maximum rise height of two coalescing forced plumes caused by superposition and mutual entrainment. The maximum values of both turbulent kinetic energy and turbulence dissipation rate decrease monotonically with the increase in source separation of the two turbulent plumes. However, the trajectory of the maximum turbulent viscosity attained in the plume cap region presents two notable enhancements. This variation may be attributed to the turbulence transported from the touching region and the strong mixing around the neutrally buoyant layer between two plumes, while the mixing is caused by the lateral convection and the rebound after overshooting. The plume entrainment coefficient in near vent stems has a positive relationship with the source Richardson number. A transition of flow regimes to plume-like flows would occur when the contribution of initial momentum is important. The entrainment coefficient will decrease in the touching region of two plumes due to mutual entrainment, while the superposition of plumes can lead to distortion of the boundary of plume sectors.

Abstract:On the basis of the RANS model,the numerical simulation study of hypersonic boundary﹣layer transitional flow was carried out on a flat﹣plate,a double wedge,and a cone by modifying k﹣ω SST turbulence model and the intermittency transition model with compressibility correction.Based on the comparison with experimental result,it is shown that the simplified three﹣equation transition model based on the pressure gradient characterization parameter Tw＝R TΩ/ω can correctly catch the transition onset location,the length of transition region,and the turbulent zone heat flux on the wall for the flat﹣plate hypersonic boundary﹣layer flow.For the double wedge and cone case,the wall heat flux in turbulent zone calculated by the simplified three﹣equation transition model is much higher than the experimental data due to the flow compression effects.However, it can agree well with the experimental data after adding compressibility correction to the model.The simplified three﹣equation transition model with appropriate compressibility correction has potential to simulate hypersonic boundary﹣layer transitional flow correctly.

Abstract:With the development of computational power and numerical algorithms,computational fluid dynamics（CFD） has become an important strategy for the design of aircraft,which significantly reduces the reliance on wind-tunnel and flight tests.In this paper,we conducted a numerical investigation on the flow past a full commercial aircraft at Mach number 0.2 and 14 degrees angle of attack by means of Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes（RANS）,detached-eddy simulation（DES） and our newly developed constrained large-eddy simulation（CLES）.The objective of this paper is to study the capability of these models in simulating turbulent flows.To our knowledge,this is the first large-eddy simulation method for full commercial aircraft simulation.The results show that the CLES can predict the mean statistical quantities well,qualitatively consistent with traditional methods,and can capture more small-scale structures near the surface of the aircraft with massive separations.Our study demonstrates that CLES is a promising alternative for simulating real engineering turbulent flows.

Abstract:The hydrodynamics of a two-vent turbulent forced plume propagating in a linear stratification has been studied by a series of laboratory experiments using the two-tank method and the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The velocity fields and turbulence characteristics of a two-vent plume under different source buoyancy flux, ambient stratification, and nozzle distance are analyzed quantitatively. The increase of maximum penetration of a two-vent plume is mainly due to the attenuation of buoyancy gradient caused by less entrainment of ambient fluid in the region between the two vents. The energy spectra do not exhibit a sizable range of the Kolmogorov -5/3 slope, indicating that no substantial inertial subrange is present in this small-scale plume in a linear stratification generated in the laboratory. Both turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation increase with the decrease of distance between the two plumes, indicating that the interaction, entrainment, and mixing in a two-vent plume stem greatly enhance energy production and dissipation. The maximum turbulent viscosity in a two-vent plume, however, presents a three-stage variation. An increase of viscosity in the second stage appears in the mixing region of the neutral buoyancy layer between the two plumes when the normalized distance L/Z(max) is in the range of 0.3-0.6; this increase is attributed to flow rebound after overshooting and a strong entrainment and mixing in this region due to lateral flow convection. A new semiempirical formula for the maximum penetration and new scaling relationships for the maximum turbulent viscosity of a two-vent plume are proposed and verified by the PIV experimental data. Abstract:Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is an important and effective tool to study the airflow field and contaminant distribution in aircraft cabins. The accuracy of numerical simulation using the CFD approach could be significantly affected by configurations of the inlet boundary conditions, turbulence model, etc. The core of this study was to assess whether conclusions achieved in simulation of airflow on usual surfaces in buildings like in commercial offices could be applicable to aircraft cabins. Comparative studies involving turbulence models or air supply opening models in aircraft cabin environment are still absent in the literature. Therefore, in this study, two turbulence models (the renormalization group (RNG) k-ɛ model and Reynolds-stress model) and three types of air supply opening models (simple open model, basic model and momentum model) were applied to simulate the airflow and contaminant concentration fields in a mockup seven-row cabin section. Our simulation results were compared with the experimental data. Six indexes based on different criteria were used to quantitatively evaluate the agreement between measurements and modelled results given by turbulence models and air supply opening models. The results show that the RNG k-ɛ and RSM turbulence models have similar accuracy in airflow and contaminant fields in the mockup cabin, and the momentum model has the best accuracy among the three air supply opening models for the aircraft cabin environment.
Computation of Hypersonic Transitional Flows Over Cones Using Gas-Kinetic Scheme Coupled with the Turbulence Model

Abstract:Accurate prediction of the laminar-turbulent transition with the aerodynamic force and heat in hypersonic boundary flows is essential for the design of a hypersonic vehicle. However, subject to the complex boundary layer mechanism of the angle of attack (AOA) effects, the numerical prediction with high accuracy of hypersonic transitional flows over a cone at a small AOA is still a challenging job in current computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling. In this paper, our objective is to improve the prediction accuracy of the traditional turbulent model in the boundary layer flow problems. We employ a gas-kinetic scheme (GKS) strongly coupled with the turbulent kinetic energy equation in the shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model. Langtry-Menter's two-equation transition model is also implemented under the GKS framework. The turbulent relaxation time obtained from the turbulence model is also implemented into the kinetic equation of the BGK model as an enhanced particle collision time related to turbulent fluctuation. We further validate this method for several classic cases of the hypersonic transitional flows over cones with various free-stream conditions at zero AOA. We also compare the numerical solutions by the current GKS coupled with the turbulent kinetic energy equation and traditional Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) method. The numerical results confirm the consistency of the transition onset locations predicted by the proposed method with the experiments. The new coupled method also significantly improves numerical accuracy. The heat flux is also in good agreement with the experimental data. The hypersonic flows past a sharp cone are also computed at various small angles of attack ranging from 2° to 4°, where the numerical results agree with the existing experimental data. Using our results we also analyze the impact of AOA on a sharp cone.

Abstract:In the paper it is theoretically proven that the topological structure of the airflow field in an airliner cabin is absolutely unstable. These are typical flow characteristics in the cabin. This also explains why in previous numerical simulations and experiments, discrepancies often arose in flow-direction results. Next, we used the fine LES with 22 million grid cells to reproduce the primary flow instability phenomenon in a symmetric cabin. However, the unsteady RANS (URANS) method with conventional turbulence models, such as the RNG k-ɛ turbulence mode, the Realizable k-ɛ turbulence model and the V2f turbulence model, cannot effectively simulate the instability of flow field in a symmetric cabin. So we developed an anisotropic model (BV2fAM) based on the idea of the V2f model. Three million grid cells are used in the BV2fAM simulation. The flow instability phenomenon is successfully reproduced in the numerical simulation of BV2fAM.

Abstract:<p>The commercial airliner cabin environment is very important for passengers and crew, and airflow and contaminant concentration distributions in cabins play a key role in creating a comfortable and healthy cabin environment. To study the airflow and the contaminant concentration distributions in airliner cabins, this investigation used a seven-row aircraft cabin mockup with well-controlled thermo-fluid boundary conditions. This study measured air temperature and velocity distributions with displacement ventilation by using T-type thermocouples and ultrasonic anemometers (UA), and contaminant distributions by using tracer gas and particle from a generator to simulate contaminant breathed out by a passenger. This paper discusses our effort to control the thermo-fluid boundary conditions with high accuracy. The measured results show that the air temperature was stratified and the air velocity was low. The contaminant was not transported to the other side of the cabin by the displacement ventilation system and was removed effectively through the ceiling exhaust. The Richardson number (Ri) indicated that the airflow was dominated by natural convection. However, the vertical temperature stratification may create discomfort for passengers.</p>

Abstract:<p>The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of large-scale circulation on the flow field in a cabin mockup. The velocity was measured by ultrasonic anemometers (UA). Then, this study analyzed the turbulence kinetic energy spectra of the velocity fluctuation signal. The turbulence kinetic energy spectra of the measurement points reflect the flow characteristic of the large-scale circulation in the cabin mockup. The results contribute to the understanding of the role of the thermal plume on the large-scale circulation in the cabin. The large-scale circulation's impact on air quality was also investigated, and the contaminant distribution was measured using tracer gas in the cabin. The two large-scale circulation interactions made the air flow mixing approximately uniform.</p>

Abstract:Computational fluid dynamics simulations of airflow inside a full-scale passenger car cabin are performed using the Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equations. The performance of a range of turbulence models is examined by reference to experimental results of the streamwise mean velocity and turbulence intensity profiles, obtained using the hot-wire anemometry technique at different locations inside the car cabin. The models include three linear eddy-viscosity-based variants, namely, the realizable k – ε , the renormalization group k – ε , and the shear-stress transport k – ω models. The baseline Reynolds stress model (BSL-RSM), a second-moment-closure variant, and an Explicit Algebraic Reynolds Stress Model (BSL-EARSM) are also investigated. Visualization of velocity vectors and streamlines in different longitudinal planes shows a similar airflow pattern. The flow topology is mainly characterized by jet flows developing from the dashboard air vents and extending to the back-seats compartment resulting in a large vortex structure. Additionally, a comparison between numerical and experimental results shows a relatively good agreement of the mean velocity profiles. However, all models exhibit some limitations in predicting the correct level of turbulence intensity. Moreover, the realizability of the modeled Reynolds stresses and the structure of turbulence are analyzed based on the anisotropy invariant mapping approach. All models reveal a few amounts of non-realizable solutions. The linear eddy-viscosity-based models return a prevailing isotropic turbulence state, while the BSL-RSM and the BSL-EARSM models display pronounced anisotropic turbulence states.

Abstract:The detailed instantaneous information and evolution of flow field in aircraft cabin were crucial for determining the spread of contaminants or viruses and creating a comfortable environment. In this paper, a refined large-eddy simulation (LES) was conducted to investigate the complex airflow characteristics in a single row B737-200 aircraft cabin model. The simulated result showed that the flow field was highly unstable. By the structural stability analysis of flow field, there were saddle points and heteroclinic orbits in cross sections of cabin model. According to the Peixoto theorem, the flow field was not a structurally stable system. Sufficiently small perturbations could alter the topological character of the set of trajectories and cause various unstability or bifurcation of flow field. The refined LES could effectively simulate the intrinsic unstable properties of flow field in aircraft cabin model. These information could be used to modify RANS turbulence models for simulation of disease transmission and thermal comfort.

Abstract:An investigation into the spread of the COVID-19 virus within a confined space including an aircraft cabin is essential in order to find out the mechanism. However, this is time-consuming and limited in scope, so a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation is used instead. Therefore, a prior study and an appropriate choice of turbulence model are required before the simulation. The main objective of this study is to validate and evaluate the results predicted by the Open Source Field Operation and Manipulation (OpenFOAM) software through comparison with the experimental data from the literature which was conducted using particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurement. Three different Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes turbulence models were selected; Re-normalisation Group k - ɛ (RNG), Realizable k - ɛ (RLZ) and Low Reynold Number (LRN) to simulate a mixing ventilation system of a scaled-down model of empty aircraft cabin. In the RNG and LRN model cases, a fairly large circulation flows were observed on the right and left sides of the model representing the passenger area. The results were also evaluated quantitatively using the factor of two of observations (FAC2) for the velocity components and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) with root mean square error (RMSE) for the former and normalised mean square errors (NMSE) for the latter. The simulation results showed that RNG and LRN are capable of predicting the flow field well. However, for TKE prediction LRN performed better than RNG which concluded that LRN is the suitable turbulence model in simulating flow fields in investigated case.
Influencing factors in the simulation of airflow and particle transportation in aircraft cabins by CFD

Abstract:To control the transport of particles such as the SARS-CoV-2 virus in airliner cabins, which is a significant concern for the flying public, effective ventilation systems are essential. Validated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models are frequently and effectively used to investigate air distribution and contaminant transportation. The complex geometry and airflow characteristics in airliner cabins pose a challenge to numerical CFD validation. The objective of this investigation was to identify accurate and affordable validation processes for studying the airflow field and particulate contaminant distribution in airliner cabins during the design process for different ventilation systems. This study quantitatively evaluated the effects of ventilation system, turbulence model, particle simulation method, geometry simplification, and boundary condition assignment on airflow and particulate distributions in airliner cabins with either a mixing ventilation (MV) system or a displacement ventilation (DV) system calculated by CFD. The results showed that among four turbulence models, the standard k-ε, RNG k-ε, realizable k-ε and SST k-ω models, the prediction by the realizable k-ε model agreed most closely with the experimental data. Meanwhile, the steady Eulerian method provided a reasonable prediction of the particle concentration field with low computing cost. The computational domain should be simplified differently for the DV system and the MV system with consideration of the simulation accuracy and computing cost. For more accurate modeling results, the boundary conditions should be assigned in greater detail, taking into account the uniformity on the boundary.
Laminar Transition over Airfoil: Numerical Simulation of Turbulence Models and Experiment Validation

Abstract:The article reviews the necessity of simulation in laminarization as an important optimization technique in aircraft design. Transition models e.g. k-ω SST with γ-Reθt model and k-kl-ω model are popular in industry and embedded in many optimization framework. The article aims to evaluate their accuracy in laminar transition predicting as well as in evaluating the effect of laminarization, i.e. the extended length of laminar brought by optimization in shape. The object for numerical simulation and experiment validation for laminar transition position predicting are one original airfoil and one laminarized airfoil under Re~2.62 × 106, Ma~0.785. The mesh with boundary conditions, the criterion for judging laminar transition, and the method to monitor laminar/turbulence distribution over model surface in wind tunnel experiment are introduced. The result shows that due to many factors, the two models cannot very accurately predict the laminar transition position, but the effect of laminarization can be evaluated quite satisfactorily by the k-ω SST with γ-Reθt model. Therefore, the laminarization applied on three-dimensional aircraft part, e.g. wing, nacelle can be constructed using this model in the future optimization framework of the authors.
Numerical Simulations of Interpersol Aerosol Transport in a Single-Aisle Aircraft Cabin

Abstract:Traditionally, air is supplied to an aircraft cabin either by individual nozzles or by supply slots. Air is expected to be fully mixed in the cabin, and the system is considered to be a mixing ventilation system. This study aims to investigate the transport characteristics of human expiratory aerosols among passengers, when the aircraft cabin is ventilated under different air distribution concepts. Four breathing thermal manikins, simulating four passengers, are located in a full-scale left side section of a single-aisle (Boeing 737) cabin with four seats. When one manikin functions as an index patient, the other three manikin’s exposure are profiled when the aircraft cabin is ventilated under displacement ventilation concept, mixing ventilation concept, downward ventilation concept combining with personalized ventilation. The CFD model is validated in cases when aerosols from index patient exhalation are traced by tracer gas N2O. Preliminary results that base on tracer gas reveal that displacement ventilation and downward ventilation concept both result in lower exposure compared to mixing ventilation. Personalized ventilation in all passenger seats does not reduce exposure at flow rates up to 4 L/s per person. Numerical simulations using NaCl solution droplets with internal suspended particles are undergoing. Droplets will shrink to a smaller size due to evaporation. Dispersion of droplet and droplet nuclei will be profiled and compared between scenarios with different ventilation concepts. Recommendations will be addressed for design of the air distribution system in such an aircraft cabin.

Abstract:Abstract The calculation of heat transfer in aircraft bulkheads is of vital importance to the design of aircraft cabins. In this paper, a numerical model for the fluid-solid coupled heat transfer of aircraft cabin bulkhead and air in the cabin is developed, including fluid/solid area division, network strategy, turbulence model and numerical discrete method, and the model is verified based on the experimental data. The results show that the proposed model can accurately predict the wall temperature and the air temperature of the aircraft cabin with a deviation of less than 1.02°C in the working range of -15∼25°C, and the prediction deviation for the air velocity is within ±10%. The heat transfer from the cabin to the bulkhead accounts for 7.5% of the total heat transfer. The main component of the thermal resistance of the cabin bulkhead is the thicker solid area, and the inlet air temperature is the key parameter for the design of aircraft cabin. The research results provide an important theoretical basis for the optimal design of the thermal environment of the aircraft cabin.
A Modular RANS Approach for Modeling Hypersonic Flow Transition on an Air-Breathing Configuration

Abstract:In this study, the laminar-turbulent flow transition scenario on a blunted double ramp, and further on a 20%-scale X-51A forebody configuration, has been simulated with a recently proposed RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes) transition/turbulence model, which takes into account of the rational effects of compressibility, crossflow and flowseparation characteristics on different instability modes in 3-D boundary-layer flows. The model is based on the K-ω-γ three-equation eddy-viscosity concept with K representing the fluctuating kinetic energy, ω the specific dissipation rate and γ the intermittency factor. This model performs pretty well in the blunted double ramp case, where the hypersonic flow transition is caused by flow separation at the compression corner. For the X-51A forebody configuration, computed results are in good agreement with experimental data under both quiet and noisy conditions.

Abstract:Ozone and byproducts of ozone-initiated reactions are among the primary pollutants in aircraft cabins. However, investigations of the spatial distribution and reaction mechanisms of these pollutants are insufficient. This study established a computational fluid dynamics-based model to evaluate ozone and byproduct distribution, considering ozone reactions in air, adsorption onto surfaces, and byproduct desorption from surfaces. The model was implemented in an authentic single-aisle aircraft cabin and validated by measurements recorded during the aircraft cruise phase. Ozone concentrations in the supply air-dominated area were approximately 50% higher than that in the passenger breathing zone, suggesting that human surfaces represent a significant ozone sink. The deposition velocity onto human bodies was 21.83 m/h, surpassing 3.97 m/h on other cabin interior surface areas. Our model provides a mechanistic tool to analyze ozone and byproduct concentration distributions, which would be useful for assessing passenger health risks and for developing strategies for healthier aircraft cabin environments.
