Abstract:Background: Urinary incontinence (UI), defined as involuntary urinary dribble at rest or under slight stress, is prevalent among women, particularly those who are pregnant or have had vaginal deliveries. While various treatments, including medical and physical therapy, are available for UI, awareness and knowledge about these treatments among young females remain unclear. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of UI and the knowledge of physical therapy treatment options among young females in Lahore. Objective: To determine the prevalence and knowledge of urinary incontinence and the awareness of physical therapy treatment among young females in Lahore. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 250 young females aged 16-35 years from Jinnah Hospital Lahore, Sheikh Zayed Hospital Lahore, Ittefaq Hospital Lahore, and General Hospital Lahore. Data were collected using a self-reported quantitative questionnaire, the "International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire – Short Form" (ICIQ-SF), which assessed awareness about UI and knowledge of treatment options. Participants were briefed on the questions to ensure accurate responses. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 25, with results presented as frequencies and percentages. Results: The study involved 250 females with an age range of 16-35 years, of whom 156 (62.4%) were single, and 94 (37.6%) were married. Obstetric data revealed that 16 (6.4%) were nulliparous, 81 (32.4%) were multiparous, 53 (21.2%) had normal labor deliveries, 49 (19.6%) had cesarean section deliveries, and 5 (2.0%) had experienced episiotomy. UI prevalence was found in 83 (34%) participants, with 63 (25%) affected moderately and 24 (10%) severely. Regarding health knowledge, 121 (48.4%) had never heard of UI, and 142 (56.8%) did not know about the presence of medical treatment. Moreover, 196 (78.4%) were unaware of the availability of physiotherapy treatment for UI. Conclusion: The prevalence of UI among young females in Lahore was significant, but the knowledge about UI and its medical treatment was relatively low. Awareness of physiotherapy treatment options was particularly lacking. These findings highlight the need for enhanced educational efforts to improve the understanding and management of UI among this population.

Effectiveness of Physiotherapy Treatment for Urinary Incontinence in Women: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Background: Urinary incontinence (UI) may be defined as involuntary urine loss, which can be diagnosed based on patient-reported measures and is a hygiene and social problem in those who have it, affecting their quality of life negatively. Objective: The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of distinct physiotherapy techniques used in the treatment of UI in women through a systematic review of the existing literature. The scales and instruments used for the assessment and follow-up of UI were described. Methods: On searching the PubMed, Dialnet, PEDro, and SciELo databases, 16 articles, with information on 1220 patients that comply with the inclusion criteria and conform to the proposed objectives were obtained, limiting the publication period to 2007-2016. The PRISMA statement was adopted. Results: The "Pad Test" is a commonly used diagnostic test and bladder diaries on paper; the Oxford scale was used in the assessment of pelvic floor muscle strength. Distinct protocols and techniques have been described in the treatment of UI in women, namely, pelvic floor exercises, vaginal cones, biofeedback, and electrostimulation. Upon analysis of the content of the articles, the quality of the included clinical trials was determined using the PEDro scale. Conclusions: Studies included in this work propose that physiotherapy treatment may improve UI, the patients' quality of life, and social relations in women. It is necessary to establish group treatment protocols for women with UI, supervised by a physiotherapist to reduce the financial burden incurred from this health problem.

Abstract:Introduction: A common gynaecological problem among women that leads to a negative impact on quality of life and causes distress is the involuntary loss of urine which is addressed as urinary incontinence (UI). Females involved in playing various types of sports perform high-intensity activities which can serve as risk factors for UI and pelvic organ prolapse. According to the available literature, there is a scarcity of information regarding data on the prevalence of UI in Indian female athletes. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of UI in nulliparous Indian sportswomen. Methodology: For a duration of 6 months, a cross-sectional study was carried out in various sports centres across the states of Telangana, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Delhi. A total of 560 nulliparous Indian female sportswomen were involved based on the selection criteria. The various sports involved were malkhamb, kabaddi, kushti, weightlifting, gymnastics, basketball, badminton, and athletics. All the participants were provided with a questionnaire for female UI diagnosis (QUID), which was the primary outcome measure. Results: Out of 560 women enrolled in the study, the highest prevalence was found for stress urinary incontinence (SUI), consisting of 126 (22.5%) women, followed by mixed urinary incontinence (MUI), involving 49 (8.8%) women, and urge urinary incontinence (UUI), including 47 (8.4%) women. Additionally, the prevalence of UI was highest in obese and overweight Indian sportswomen. Moreover, the highest prevalence of SUI among women was for weightlifting, whereas for UUI and MUI, malkhamb and kushti sports were the most prevalent, respectively. Conclusion: The present study concluded that the highest prevalence among nulliparous Indian sportswomen was for SUI, followed by MUI and UUI. Additionally, weightlifting sport showed the highest prevalence for SUI, followed by malkhamb for UUI and kushti for MUI. The prevalence of UI in Indian sportswomen is important as it imparts knowledge and awareness among women and benefits professionals in designing appropriate preventive and rehabilitative protocols for curtailing such problems in the near future.

Abstract:Objective This integrative review identified studies that reported the prevalence of physiotherapeutic interventions for urinary incontinence among postpartum women. Methods This is an integrative literature review study. We used the integrative literature review framework proposed by Whittemore and Knafl to search for relevant literature. Search Strategy The search strategy for electronic databases was developed from the research question and definitions of key concepts, assisted by the librarian. Databases that were searched include Google Scholar, Medline (PubMed), CINAHL, and the Joanna Briggs Institute databases. Both qualitative and quantitative studies that met the inclusion criteria were included. We used the CASP tool to assess the quality of selected papers. Data Collection and Analysis The included articles were thematically analyzed. Thirty‐six papers met the inclusion criteria for the review. Six themes emerged from the analysis: prevalence of postpartum UI; risk factors for postpartum UI; antenatal pelvic floor muscle training; conservative treatment and quality of life; experiences of postpartum women with UI; and possible coping strategies adopted by women. Most of the articles were quantitative studies (80.5%); 16.6% were qualitative and 2.7% adopted mixed methods. Conclusions Urinary incontinence is common in postpartum women. Antenatal pelvic floor muscle training is protective against postpartum UI and should be the first‐line treatment option.

A Qualitative Exploration of Women With Cystic Fibrosis and Urinary Incontinence

Abstract:Importance: Women with cystic fibrosis (CF) historically experience a high prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI). However, this area is understudied, especially in the modern era of highly effective modulator therapy (HEMT). Objective: This study aimed to explore the UI experiences, knowledge, care-seeking behavior, and treatment preferences of women with CF. Study design: We recruited women aged ≥18 years through the CF Foundation's Community Voice national registry if they had a diagnosis of CF and reported UI. Participants underwent individual, semistructured interviews exploring their experiences, attitudes, and preferences toward UI that were audiorecorded and transcribed. Two coders performed thematic analysis using deductive and inductive coding approaches. Results: Twenty-six participants completed interviews (average age, 45.1 years; range, 24-61 years). Key themes included the following: (1) most women with CF and UI report low bother from symptoms likely related to stress UI, and HEMT has greatly improved UI symptoms and decreased bother; (2) most women with CF and UI had previously discussed UI symptoms with family and/or peers but had not sought care due to stigma or low priority; (3) women with CF and UI had minimal knowledge about UI in general and how it relates to CF; (4) most desired broad screening for UI from their CF team and improved multidisciplinary care; and (5) highly effective UI treatment options with low-time commitment and easily accessible resources are desired. Conclusions: Women with CF and UI report low knowledge and care-seeking behavior related to this condition and desire improved care provision. Importantly, HEMT may improve UI symptoms among people with CF.

Abstract: Perimenopause is characterized by irregular menstrual cycles, and by the appearance of the so called hot flashes. A study of 125 perimenopausal women, and a measurement of the secretion of ovarian and gonadotropin hormones has revealed several possibilities; 1) FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) and LH (luteinizing hormone) reach high levels, while level of estradiol is low; 2) high levels of FSH and LH with high levels of progesterone; and, 3) normal levels of FSH and LH and very high levels of estradiol. Pulsatory secretion is irregular, and endometrial state reflects the inertia of the system.

Abstract:Introduction and hypothesisTo determine the prevalence, severity, risk factors and self-perception of female urinary incontinence (UI) in rural Fujian, China.MethodsThis population-based cross-sectional study was conducted between June and October 2022. Women aged 20 to 70 years from rural communities in Fujian Province were selected by multistage random sampling. Data from respondents were collected by completing standardised questionnaires through face-to-face interviews. The main outcome was prevalence and self-perception of UI.ResultsA total of 5659 valid questionnaires were collected. The overall prevalence of female UI was 23.6% (95% CI 22.5–24.7). The most common type was stress UI with a prevalence of 14.0% (95% CI 13.1–14.9), followed by mixed UI with a prevalence of 6.1% (95% CI 5.5–6.7), and finally urgency UI with a prevalence of 3.5% (95% CI 3.0–3.9). Multivariate regression analysis suggested that older age, obesity, postmenopausal status, multiple vaginal deliveries, macrosomia, instrumental vaginal delivery and previous pelvic floor surgeries were independently associated with UI (P < 0.05). The overall awareness rate of UI was 24.7%, and older age, lower level of education, and income were significantly associated with a decrease in awareness (P < 0.05). Only 33.3% of respondents believed they should seek medical help for UI.ConclusionUI affects more than one-fifth of women in rural Fujian, and several factors are thought to be associated with its development. Rural women have a poor self-perception of UI, which is exacerbated by older age, lower levels of education, and lower income.

Abstract:Background/Objectives: Urinary incontinence (UI) significantly affects women's health worldwide, but its specific prevalence in Ecuador is not well documented. This research aimed to determine the prevalence of urinary incontinence among sexually active women in the Cuenca canton and the factors associated with its presence. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from August 2023 to January 2024 involving 460 women aged 30 years or older attending public health centers in Cuenca, Ecuador. The ICIQ-SF questionnaire was used to assess the presence and severity of UI and its impact on quality of life, along with a data collection form. Results: The findings revealed that UI is prevalent in a population that often lacks timely diagnosis, further obscuring the true extent of the issue. The results demonstrated that sociodemographic, gyneco-obstetric, and urological factors significantly influenced the risk of developing this condition. Conclusions: This study demonstrated a high prevalence of UI among women in Cuenca, Ecuador, with a notable impact on quality of life. The aforementioned factors predispose to the development of this condition, highlighting the need for preventive and rehabilitative interventions, as well as appropriate policies to address UI as a public health issue.

Abstract:Objective: To explore the association between fasting insulin levels and dementia. Methods: Fasting insulin levels were measured from frozen sera using solid-phase chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay in a sample of elderly subjects chosen at random from a cohort of persons aged 65 years and older from northern Manhattan. Dementia was diagnosed using standard methods. Neuropsychiatric testing was available on all subjects at each follow-up interval. Results: A total of 683 subjects without prevalent dementia were followed for 3,691 person-years and 149 persons developed dementia (137 Alzheimer disease [AD], 6 dementia associated with stroke, 6 other). The risk of AD doubled in the 39% of the sample with hyperinsulinemia (HR = 2.1; 95% CI: 1.5, 2.9) and was highest in people without diabetes. The HR relating presence of hyperinsulinemia or diabetes in 50% of our sample to AD was 2.2 (95% CI: 1.5, 3.1). The risk of AD attributable to the presence of hyperinsulinemia or diabetes was 39%. The HR of AD for the highest quartile of insulin compared to the lowest was 1.7 (95% CI: 1.0, 2.7; p for trend = 0.009). Hyperinsulinemia was also related to a significant decline in memory-related cognitive scores, but not to decline in other cognitive domains. Conclusions: Hyperinsulinemia is associated with a higher risk of AD and decline in memory.

Abstract:Harmonic content, magnetic saturation and simulation time can be an issue for the analysis of steady-state and transient behavior of electrical machines. Carrying the simulations with a finite-elements software results in long simulation time. To reduce the simulation time, this paper proposes a fast modelling method based on a coupled circuit whose magnetic couplings are identified with magnetostatic 2D FE simulations. This method provides an accurate spatial modelling. The magnetic couplings for each discrete rotor position are stored in a table. We show that a simple interpolation method can be used for the inductance estimation at any rotor position with a variable-step solver. The impact of the angular discretization on the waveforms is analyzed. We propose also a simple method to consider the saturation in the coupled-circuit. The performance of this model is analyzed for the steady-state and transient current responses of a synchronous generator with high field current.

Abstract:Objectives: Urinary incontinence (UI) is the involuntary loss of urine or the inability to control urination. The International Continence Society defines UI as any complaint of involuntary loss of urine. UI is a very important health problem that affects women's quality of life. It can lead to a decrease in women's self-confidence and prevent them from participating in social activities. This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of UI in women living in Turkey, the factors affecting it, and women's attitudes toward UI. Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study included 903 women who applied to 17 family health centers in Mersin, Turkey, between May 10th to June 10th 2019 for any reason. The data of the study were obtained using the descriptive information form and the Urinary Incontinence Attitude Scale (UIAS). Data analysis was performed with SPSS-21 using percentiles, mean±standard deviation, and Pearson chi-square tests. Results: According to the results obtained, 28.9% of the women had UI problems, more than half (54.6%) of the women with UI did not present to a health institution for this problem, and 54.8% did not receive any treatment. In addition, the frequency of experiencing UI was higher in those with a chronic disease (59.2%) than in those without any chronic disease, and the difference was significant. Conclusion: The demographic and fertility characteristics of the women influenced the frequency of experiencing UI. In addition, among the women participating in the study, those with negative attitudes toward UI experienced more UI problems. Polyphenotypic peripheral neuroepithelioma occuring in the foot: a case report.

Abstract:Peripheral neuroepithelioma of the soft tissues is an uncommon member of primitive neuroectodermal tumors. Divergent differentiation and polyphenotypia is known in peripheral neuroepithelioma. We report one such recurrent peripheral neuroepithelioma in an infant which was detected at one month of age, in the foot. Microscopically, it showed tumor cells in nests and lobules with abundant Homer-Wright rosettes. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells were immunoreactive for neural markers but also displayed an aberrant myoid phenotype. The prognostic implications of this anomalous phenotype are unclear as of now, but documentation of this is necessary for possible future references.
Help-seeking behavior for nonsevere stress urinary incontinence among elderly women in communities, Beijing, China

Abstract:Introduction and hypothesis Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is a common health problem and influences women’s quality of life significantly. In order to enhance health education according to a specific situation, it is essential to identify barriers to seeking help among elderly women with nonsevere SUI. The objectives were to investigate reasons for (not) seeking help for nonsevere SUI among women aged ≥60 years, and to analyze factors affecting help-seeking behavior. Methods We enrolled 368 women aged ≥60 years with nonsevere SUI from communities. They were asked to filled out sociodemographic information, International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Short Form (ICIQ-SF), Incontinence Quality of Life (I-QOL), and self-constructed questiones on help-seeking behavior. Mann–Whitney U tests were used to analyze the different factors between seeking group and nonseeking group. Results Only 28 women (7.61%) had ever sought help from health professionals for SUI. The most frequent reason for seeking help was urine-soaked clothes (67.86%, 19 out of 28). The most frequent reason for not seeking help was that women thought it was normal (67.35%, 229 out of 340). Compared with the nonseeking group, the seeking group had higher total ICIQ-SF scores and lower total I-QOL scores. Conclusion Among elderly women with nonsevere SUI, the rate of seeking help was low. Lack of correct perception about the SUI kept women from doctor visits. Women who were bothered by more severe SUI and lower quality of life were more likely to seek help.

Abstract:OTJR: Occupational Therapy Journal of Research, Ahead of Print. Over half of women in the United States report urinary incontinence (UI). This condition can be treated conservatively, but many people do not seek treatment. The current correlational study assessed women's knowledge of UI. Specifically, we investigated the relationships between knowledge level about UI and quality of life (QoL), and between severity level of UI and QoL. A convenience cross-sectional sample of 39 older women was obtained from two YMCA locations. Data were analyzed using the Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient. A significant relationship was found between severity of UI and QoL, rs = −.73, p < .001; no relationship was found between knowledge level of UI and QoL, rs = .24, p = .13. Results suggested women's knowledge about the causes of UI and conservative therapy is limited. Occupational therapists need to address UI with their patients and educate them about treatment options and availability.Plain Language SummaryUrinary Incontinence and Quality of Life: A Cross-Sectional StudyThis research article describes a study assessing the knowledge of women about urinary incontinence (UI), if they are experiencing UI, and their level of quality of life (QoL) as it pertains to UI. Although the results did not show a link between the level of knowledge about UI and QoL of the participants, the authors found that knowledge about the causes and possible treatments of UI by the study participants was limited. The study results indicate the need for community education on occupational therapy treatment options. Occupational therapy practitioners can expand their practice areas to address the needs of women experiencing a reduction in occupational engagement due to UI.

Abstract:Urinary incontinence (UI) is an involuntary leakage of urine and is classified as stress, mixed, or urge. It is more common in females due to anatomical and physiological body differences. Moreover, the literature remarks an evident presence of UI with high-intensity physical activities. Therefore, the present integrative systematic review focused on the studies aimed at investigating the prevalence of UI in nulliparous sportswomen, studies illustrating sport-specific prevalence of UI, and studies demonstrating the impact of physical therapy intervention on UI. A literature search was carried out systematically on electronic databases consisting of Cochrane and Google Scholar databases from 2018 to December 2023. The keywords utilized to perform the literature search and include relevant articles consisted of "urinary incontinence," AND "nulliparous," AND "sportswomen," OR "female athletes," AND "physical therapy". A total of nine studies were included in the present systematic review. The quality assessment of the studies was performed by using a measurement tool to assess systematic reviews (AMSTAR 2) scale, and the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool was used for cross-sectional and randomized controlled trial studies. The data extracted included first author and year of publication, study design, sample or number of individuals involved in the study, age range of the participants, type of UI, type of sports involved, purpose of the study, methodological part, outcome measures derived, conclusion, and quality assessment of the studies. The review concluded that nulliparous athletes, especially those participating in high-impact activities, have a significant prevalence of UI. In addition, the physical therapy intervention consisting of pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) along with education about pertinent pelvic anatomy was mostly performed on female athletes for the prevention and management of UI.
Suffering in silence: a community-based study of fecal incontinence in women

Abstract:Objective: Fecal incontinence (FI) is a very common problem in women especially among the elderly. Women with FI experience significant physical and psychological disability and lifestyle limitations. This study attempts to estimate FI among community women above 40 years of age and its associated risk factors in Tehran, Iran. Study design: In this cross-sectional study, via cluster sampling, a total of 800 community middle-aged women were randomly selected and interviewed using a questionnaire. Results: Prevalence of FI was 18.4 %. Our findings show that FI was associated with UI, osteoarthritis, diabetes mellitus, and inflammatory bowel disease. Conclusions: FI was a prevalent condition in Iranian middle-aged women. Future efforts should be aimed at screening FI in women, offering services to treat them, reducing personal and complication-related costs, and improving their quality of life.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Urinary incontinence can be of three types stress, urge and mixed. Almost two-thirds of women experience UI postpartum. Prevalence rates of up to 42.8% are reported for women aged 30 to 45 years living in India. Urinary incontinence is socially embarrassing condition with a profound effect on Quality of life. Physical therapy has become preferred treatment for many patients with urinary incontinence because of its relatively simple treatment, low medical cost, and no side effects and adverse reactions which mainly includes pelvic floor muscle training, bladder training, and nerve regulation. AIM OF THE STUDY: To check the effect of IVES along with Kegel's exercise on pelvic floor muscle strength and endurance in postpartum females having UI. METHOD: Three cases of below 40 years female were taken having urinary incontinence. Pre examination of Pelvic floor muscle strength and endurance in all three cases was done. Four weeks of intervention including Intravaginal electric stimulation (IVES) along with Kegel’s exercise was given. Post analysis was done after four weeks. RESULTS: Results were calculated on the basis of Mean±SD values of all three cases. There was improvement found in muscle strength and endurance after four weeks of IVES along with Kegel’s exercise. CONCLUSION: This present study concludes that Combined intervention of IVES+ Kegel’s exercise is safe and effective in females with urinary incontinence. IVES is safe to use in females with urinary incontinence. Key words: Urinary incontinence, Intravaginal electric stimulation, Postpartum females, Pelvic floor dysfunctions, Quality of life.
