Abstract:In this work, we synthesized various thiophene-diketopyrrolopyrrole-based (DPP-2T-based) molecules by Knoevenagel condensation and halogenation reaction, which applied DPP-2T-based small molecules as anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) for the first time. We studied the different substituents on battery performance and explored the charge-discharge mechanism for DPP-2T-based molecules. DPP-2T-based molecules exhibit different electrochemical properties by substituting various groups at nitrogen positions, where DPP-2T-TA (tert-butyl acetate) electrode possesses better capacity and long-term cycle performance than that of DPP-2T-H (no substitution) and DPP-2T-C-6 (hexane) electrode. DPP-2T-TA electrode present an unusual upward tendency for its discharge specific capacity during cycling, which displays that of 530 mAh/g (1000 mA g(-1)) after 2000 cycles and the capacity retention reaches up to 142.5 %. It is better than those of DPP-2T-H (439 mAh/g, 108.1 %) and DPP-2T-C-6 (423 mAh/g, 113.1 %) electrode, which is ascribed to oxygen activity excitation in tert-butyl acetate. This moment, the energy density and power density of DPP-2T-TA electrode are 346 Wh kg(-1) and 699 W kg-1, respectively. To further explain this phenomenon, we used many ex-situ measurgin methods such as differential specific capacity (dQ/dV) curves, scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometer, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis to characterize the detailed lithiation/delithiation process of DPP-2T-TA electrode. The results suggest that the unusual capacity amplification for DPP-2T-TA electrode attributed to lithium-ions inserted into unsat-urated carbons and increases its interfacial storage capacity. We believe that the synthesis of DPP-2T-based organic molecules can provide a novel strategy for the development of organic electrode materials for LIBs.
Three-dimensionally ordered mesoporous multicomponent (Ni, Mo) metal oxide/N-doped carbon composite with superior Li-ion storage performance

Abstract:Among the various nanostructures, porous materials with controlled pore structures have been widely used for designing transition metal-based anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, because they provide good access to electrolyte and can effectively accommodate stress arising from volume changes. In particular, ternary transition metal oxide materials containing nanovoids, arranged with high degree of periodicity, are ideal for enhancing lithium-ion storage capability. In this study, we provide a method using spray pyrolysis for the synthesis of mesoporous multicomponent metal oxide microspheres containing Ni and Mo components and N-doped carbon, in which three-dimensionally ordered 40 nm-sized mesopores are interconnected. During the synthesis, polystyrene nanobeads are used as a sacrificial template and are readily eliminated via thermal decomposition. Increased concentrations of polystyrene nanobeads enables the formation of open channels throughout the microspheres. When employed as a lithium-ion battery anode, the mesoporous multicomponent metal oxide microspheres containing Ni and Mo components and N-doped carbon exhibit high reversible capacity, good cycling stability, and excellent rate performance. After 1000 cycles, the microspheres deliver a discharge capacity of 693 mA h g-1 at a current density of 1.0 A g-1.
Conjugated Microporous Polymer Based on Star-Shaped Triphenylamine-Benzene Structure with Improved Electrochemical Performances As the Organic Cathode Material of Li-ion Battery

Abstract:Based on the star-shaped structure, triphenylamine derivative 1,3,5-tris(4-diphenylamino-phenyl)benzene (TTPAB) with multiple active polymerization sites of three peripheral triphenylamine units was designed and synthesized, which was further prepared into the corresponding conjugated microporous polymer PTTPAB by chemical oxidative polymerization. The polymer PTTPAB powder exhibited the blossom sphere-like morphology with high surface area (595 m(2)/g) and plentiful micropores of the average diameter of 0.68 nm as well as mesopores of the small diameter of similar to 2-5 nm. Being explored as the organic cathode material of battery, PTTPAB exhibited more remarkable rate performance of 84, 82, 81, 80, 84 mAh g(-1) than that of PTPAn (81, 73, 72, 69, 82 mAh g(-1)) in the range of 2.5-4.2 Vat current rate from 50 to 500 mA g(-1) . This enhanced rate performances of PTTPAB was mainly attributed to the high specific surface area caused by the plentiful micropores and mesopores from the conjugated microporous polymer structure and blossom microspheres morphology. The high surface area can benefit to the reversible redox reaction available for Li+ and shorten Li+ diffusion pathway, that led to the more reduced charge transfer resistance (similar to 160 Omega for PTTPAB and similar to 920 Omega for PTPAn), thereby improving the rate performance. Meanwhile, PTTPAB showed more stable cycling life with hardly any loss and higher coulomb efficiency during the 50th charge/discharge cycle. These excellent cell performances and unique micro-mesopores structure make PTTPAB polymer a good potential candidate as the organic cathode materials for high rate performance organic reachargeable batteries. Abstract:Organic electrode materials show promise for application in rechargeable batteries due to their potential for high capacity, tunable structures, flexibility, and sustainability. However, the serious dissolution problem in organic electrolytes and the inferior intrinsic conductivity of organic electrode materials limit their performance and practical applications in LIBs. Herein, a novel carbonyl-enriched polymer (PDABQ) was designed and synthesized from tetraaminobenzoquinone (TABQ) and chloranil (TCBQ). The integration of low molecular weight −NH– with quinone units can effectively improve the theoretical specific capacity and extend the conjugated structure. Meanwhile, the hydrogen bonds between CO and −NH– and intermolecular π–π interactions further enhance the solvent resistance and the charge transfer rate of the PDABQ cathode. Therefore, the PDABQ cathode shows long-term cycling stability (88.8% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 2 A g–1), high reversible specific capacity (234.2 mA h g–1 at 0.1 A g–1), and outstanding rate performance (161.2 mA h g–1 at 2 A g–1, 75.9% capacity retention versus 0.1 A g–1). This work offers an effective and convenient molecular structure design strategy for high-performance organic carbonyl polymer cathode materials.

Abstract:Organic carbonyl compounds have been widely investigated as a promising candidate for graphite anodes in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of their high capacity, low cost, and diverse structure. Here, a multicarbonyl polyimide derivative bearing an anhydride with benzoquinone was designed and synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. Integrating flexible structural design with careful regulation of polymerization conditions, the polyimide derivative exhibits an unprecedented three-dimensional microsphere-like superstructure constructed by interconnected two-dimensional nanosheets, which is beneficial to trigger interfacial energy storage and improve storage capacity. When explored as an anode material for LIBs, the polyimide derivative delivers an outstanding reversible capacity (992 mAh/g at 100 mA/g), good rate capability (268 mAh/g at 2 A/g), and excellent cycle stability (465 mAh/g after 150 cycles at 0.5 A/g). Based on density functional theory calculations and experimental results, a 24 Li-storage mechanism with a five-step lithiation/delithiation process is proposed.

Abstract:Carbon‐coated Fe2O3@Ti3C2Tx composites as high‐performance anode were synthesized by a mussel‐like modification method, where electronegative group (−OH) on polydopamine can easily coordinate with Fe3+ ions as well as form hydrogen bonds with the −OH terminal group on the Ti3C2Tx surface, which induces a uniform distribution of Fe2O3 on the Ti3C2Tx surface. Meanwhile, the polydopamine‐derived carbon layer protects Ti3C2Tx from oxidation. Fe2O3 with high theoretical capacity (1007 mA h g−1) and low cost is a potential anode material for lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs), but its practical application is restricted by its low electrical conductivity and large volume changes during lithiation/delithiation. To solve these problems, Fe2O3@Ti3C2Tx composites were synthesized by a mussel‐like modification method, which relies on the self‐polymerization of dopamine under mild conditions. During polymerization, the electronegative group (−OH) on dopamine can easily coordinate with Fe3+ ions as well as form hydrogen bonds with the −OH terminal group on the surface of Ti3C2Tx, which induces a uniform distribution of Fe2O3 on the Ti3C2Tx surface and mitigates self‐accumulation of MXene nanosheets. In addition, the polydopamine‐derived carbon layer protects Ti3C2Tx from oxidation during the hydrothermal process, which can further improve the electrical conductivity of the composites and buffer the volume expansion and particle agglomeration of Fe2O3. As a result, Fe2O3@Ti3C2Tx anodes exhibit ~100 % capacity retention with almost no capacity loss at 0.5 A g−1 after 250 cycles, and a stable capacity of 430 mA h g−1 at 2 A g−1 after 500 cycles. The unique structural design of this work provides new ideas for the development of MXene‐based composites in energy storage applications.

Abstract:An in situ hybrid crosslinking polymerized TiO2 nanoparticles are proposed for the preparation of a highly stable polymer composite electrolyte (NHCPE) with an extremely high ionic conductivity of 1.74 × 10−3 S cm−1 and a lithium‐ion transfer number of 0.725 at 25 °C. The proposed PDOL@nanoTiO2 (NHCPE) greatly inhibits the defects of easy agglomeration of composite electrolytes, and solves the problems of easy decomposition, low thermal stability, and poor safety of polyether electrolytes. The composite solid electrolyte, which combines the advantages of inorganic conductors and organic polymer electrolytes, has become a crucial strategy for the construction of solid‐state batteries. However, the physical deposition and agglomeration of traditional composite fillers seriously affect their structural uniformity and ion transport performance, and the construction of uniform and stable composite electrolytes is still an insurmountable challenge. Herein, a strategy of in situ hybrid crosslinking polymerization of TiO2 nanoparticles is proposed for highly stable polymer composite electrolytes (NHCPE) with an ultrahigh ionic conductivity of 1.74 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 25 °C, and a high lithium‐ion transference number of 0.725. These properties enable the composed lithium symmetric battery to be stably deposited/plating off at 0.5 mA cm−2 for more than 1000 h. Moreover, the assembled LFP|PDOL@nanoTiO2|Li battery exhibits a superior specific discharge capacity of 142.6 mAh g−1 at 1 C and 25 °C, and an ultrahigh capacity retention rate of 90% after 1000 cycles. The proposed PDOL@nanoTiO2 NHCPE greatly inhibits the defects of easy agglomeration of composite electrolytes, solves the problems of easy decomposition, low thermal stability, and poor safety of polyether electrolytes, and opens up a new way for the design and industrial application of high‐stability composite polymer electrolytes.

Abstract:Improving the cycling performance without sacrificing its capacity is challenging for high-voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode due to the trade-off nature among the key properties. A self-polymerization process of dopamine was utilized to grow polydopamine (PDA)-nano titanium dioxide assembly. PDA@TiO2 composite was demonstrated to be integrated with the particles of high-voltage spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathodes via wet chemical method. PDA@TiO2 decorated LNMO improved the long-term cycling performance and rate capability by suppressing detrimental side reactions in balancing the interfacial stability and Li+ diffusion kinetics of LNMO and consequently providing efficient conductive pathways. As a result, 2% PDA@TiO2 modified LNMO cathode exhibited the high reversible capacity of 117mAhg−1 after 1000 cycles with good capacity retention of 90.7% at 1 C, and superior rate capability (78.5mAhg−1 at 5 C) at room temperature. Remarkably, a significant improvement in cycling stability at an elevated temperature (50°C) was obtained for the PDA@TiO2-LNMO composite, giving a capacity retention of 93% after 100 cycles at 1 C. The mechanism of performance improvement could be attributed to the maintenance of the structural stability of LNMO cathode materials and the enhanced kinetics of the remarkable lithium-ion diffusion through the protective effect of PDA@TiO2 decorating.

Abstract:Metal-polydopamine coordination chemistry attracts great attention owing to the synergistic effect of adjustable components and advantageous structures. However, few efforts have been devoted to exploring bimetal-polydopamine composites, especially for multistructural composites with high-capacity components and high stability. In this regard, the TiO2 @C-WSe2 core-shell nanospheres are designed and fabricated based on Ti-W-polydopamine composites after selenization, in which the TiO2 nanoparticles are encapsulated or embedded in the carbon nanospheres and the external WSe2 nanosheets are grown epitaxially on the carbon surfaces, featuring multiple channels for ion diffusion and abundant active edges for electrochemical reactions. The introduction of WSe2 not only greatly improves the capacity but also results in exponential growth of the active edge. As a result, the as-prepared TiO2 @C-WSe2 displayed long-term cycling performance in lithium-ion batteries. Furthermore, the anode is assembled into sodium-ion batteries, manifesting a stable capacity of 352 mA h g-1 at 1.0 A g-1 even after 2000 cycles, one of the best performances for polydopamine-based composites. Enhanced performance can be attributed to the synergies of high-capacity components and different dimensional materials. This work highlights that the rational design of functional structures provides a novel inspiration for electrodes with effective nanoarchitectures.
Polydopamine Coated Lithium Lanthanum Titanate in Bilayer Membrane Electrolytes for Solid Lithium Batteries

Abstract:The demand for solid lithium batteries with high energy density and safety boosts the development of solid-state electrolytes in which composite membrane electrolytes consisting of polymers and ceramic fillers are attractive. As the common ceramic filler, perovskite-structured Li0.33La0.557TiO3 (LLTO) has great advantage on cost and environmental friendliness by using earth-abundant raw materials in the production. Nevertheless, the chemical instability of LLTO against Li-metal hinders its application. Herein, LLTO particles are coated by biodegradable polydopamine (PDA) layers and united with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to prepare composite electrolytes which perform superior stability against Li-metal. Besides, PVDF:LLTO membranes are assembled at cathode sides and show high voltage tolerance. The Li/Ni0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 cells with bilayer membrane electrolytes can deliver the specific capacity of 158.2 mAh g-1 and maintain 83% capacity after 100 cycles at 0.1 C. Furthermore, based on the bilayer membranes with outstanding flexibility and stretchability, the cells can even survive under several extreme conditions, such as bending, twisting, crimping, and stretching. This study offers an environmentally friendly strategy to improve the stability of LLTO against Li and sheds light on the development of cost-effective solid electrolytes.

Abstract:A new agent-based model is presented of the investiga tion of collective behavior with a large number of deci sion makers operating in a stochastic environment. (An agent is an entity that interacts with and contributes to its environment. A set of agents can be a simplified representation of a society.) The model has three distinc tive new features: the number of agents in the model is theoretically unlimited; the agents have various distinct user-defined "personalities;" and the agents are described as combinations of cellular and stochastic learning au tomata. The combination of different personalities with stochastic learning makes it possible to simulate human- like behavior in social situations when each group mem ber must choose between maximizing selfish interests or collective interests. Our model is a framework to per form various simulated social experiments and assess the propagation of information and human influence in large-scale conflicting environments, e.g., to simulate realistic multi-person social dilemmas. We have devel oped a computational tool to implement this model. This is a powerful tool for investigating group dynamics that is also an advance in nonlinear dynamic system simu lation. It may lead to the discovery of a number of fac tors influencing human collective behavior.
Strong oxidation induced quinone-rich dopamine polymerization onto porous carbons as ultrahigh-capacity organic cathode for sodium-ion batteries

Abstract:Organic cathodes have emerged as promising candidate for sodium ions batteries (SIBs) because of their high theoretical capacity, molecular diversity, and sustainability. However, the inferior rate performance and poor cycle life still restrict their large-scale applications. Herein, a facile strategy for the synthesis of ultrathin quinone-rich polydopamine (PDA) coating which is tightly adhered on 3D porous carbon surface (PC-PDA-APS) is prepared through a superfast (∼1.5 h) heterogeneous nucleation process. Ammonium persulfate (APS) used as initiating agent can not only restrain the self-nucleation of dopamine, but also promote the transformation from bi-hydroxyl to bi-carbonyl with an ultra-high conversion rate up to 81%. Having benefited from the synergistic effect of inter-connective 3D carbon skeleton, ultrathin PDA coating, and ultrahigh quinone content, the PC-PDA-APS exhibits significantly high specific capacity (322 mA h g−1 at 0.1 A g−1), and excellent rate performance (102 mA h g−1 at 10 A g−1). More specially, the combination of DFT calculations and in-situ FTIR spectroscopy verifies the synergistic Na+ storage mechanisms of reversible enol reaction of C=O groups with Na+ and imine groups (R=N-R') with Na+. This research fundamentally provides a structural engineering method for remarkably improving the performance of sodium-organic cathode.

Abstract:Organic electrodes are promising as next-generation energy storage materials owing to their diverse structures, low mass, and environmental friendliness. Nevertheless, the dissolution and degradation of organic active species in electrolytes are remaining obstacles to their authentic commercialization. Herein, we report an instantaneous in-situ upgrading strategy to convert multi-site organic cathode materials, e.g., 1-aminoanthraquinone (1-AAQ) and 1,5-diaminoanthraquinone (1,5-DAAQ), into poly(1-aminoanthraquinone) (PAAQ) and poly(1,5-diaminoanthraquinone) (PDAAQ) simply by dropping the electrolyte during battery assembly without extra operations. The remarkable chemistry is essentially a chemical polymerization process of redox-active organic monomers triggered by the electrolyte containing magnesium bis(hexamethyldisilazide) (Mg(HMDS)(2)) as an initiator. Notably, due to the pi-conjugated polymer chain with inhibited dissolution, high conductivity, and improved stability, the as-obtained PDAAQ cathode delivered a high specific capacity (254 mAh/g at 100 mA/g), superior rate performance (83 mAh/g at 2000 mA/g), and excellent cycling stability for over 8000 cycles accompanied by an average capacity decay of only 0.0026 % per cycle. Detailed characterizations further explore the kinetic behaviors and verify a reversible hybrid cation-anion co-redox mechanism of PDDAQ cathode, which involves reversible Mg2+ cation insertion/extraction on AQ units and anion doping/de-doping reactions on the PANI backbones. Density functional theory (DFT) computations demonstrate the optimized structure of the discharged products and indicate that Mg2+ preferably interact with two carbonyls oxygen atoms and nitrogen atom for both PAAQ and PDAAQ. This study demonstrates an intriguing in-situ chemical-polymerization synthetic approach for preparing multi-site organic electrode materials that compromise structure optimization and synthetic efforts, offering great promise for high-performance and sustainable secondary batteries.
Atomistic Structural Engineering of Conjugated Organic Polymer Cathodes for High-Performance Li-Organic Batteries

Abstract:Conjugated organic polymers have been deemed as one type of the most promising electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their structural diversity and functional designability. However, the poor conductivities and limited redox-active sites of these polymers severely impede their applications in LIBs. Herein, four novel pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone (PTO)-based polymers (namely as PTO-Bz, PTO-Py, PTO-Pm, and PTO-Tz) were designed and synthesized as cathode materials with high electrochemical activity (four redox sites of PTO units), and superb structural/chemical stability. By changing the N content in aryl linkers, the electronic conduction and transportation of polymer structures could be readily adjusted, leading to the enhanced electrochemical activity. As a result, the optimal PTO-Py polymer displays high electronic conductivity and enhanced pseudocapacitive behavior compared with the other samples. When evaluated as cathodes for LIBs, PTO-Py electrode shows a high lithium storage performance of 220.4 mA h g-1 with ICE of 97.0 % at 0.1 A g-1, superior rate performance (153.1 mA h g-1 at 10 A g-1), and excellent cycling abilities (70.8% capacity retention over 2000 cycles at 1.0 A g-1). In addition, ex situ FT-IR analysis were also carried out to further understand the Li+ storage mechanism. This work unveils an efficacious strategy to exploit high-performance conjugated organic polymer electrodes for energy storage systems.

Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) has been regarded as a promising anode candidate compared to commercial graphite in lithium-ion batteries. However, it usually suffers from high irreversibility of the conversion reaction and huge volume variation, leading to low initial Coulombic efficiency and rapid capacity fading. Engineering a reliable protection layer and subsequent prelithiation is essential to address these issues. In this work, a hybrid poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and manganese oxide (MnO2) composite layer has been conformally coated on SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs). Here, PAA not only works as a catalyst to make the MnO2 coating conformal but also ensures the hybrid protection layer flexible enough to tolerate volume variation of the SnO2 particles. The obtained core-shell SnO2@PAA/MnO2 NPs were then converted into alloy composite via thermal lithiation. Due to the robust lithiated PAA/MnO2 (Li-PAA/MnO2) protection layer, most side reactions and undesirable solid electrolyte interphases are suppressed, ensuring lower polarization and faster reaction kinetics for lithium storage. With fully expanded LixSn NPs confined in the Li-PAA/MnO2 matrix, the composite exhibits stable cycling performance with high Coulombic efficiency. It delivers a high delithiation capacity of 683 mAh g-1 at 1 C (0.005-1 V), and similar to 80% capacity retention is achieved after 500 cycles. Moreover, the composite exhibits stable full cell cycling paired with a LiFePO4 cathode, indicating its great application potential.
MXene-based porous and robust 2D/2D hybrid architectures with dispersed Li3Ti2(PO4)3 as superior anodes for lithium-ion battery

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) MXenes become the predominant choice of lithium-ion battery electrode materials owing to large surface-area-to-volume ratio and metallic conductivity, but severe restacking still remains the main obstruct. Herein, a new strategy of avoiding restacking and assuring structural stability is proposed. We demonstrate the fabrication of novel hierarchically porous and robust 2D/2D hybrid architectures consisting of a large thin Ti3C2 flake with many standing intersecting TiO2 nanosheets, followed by generation of well-dispersed Li3Ti2(PO4)3 nanocrystals. The resulting TiO2 sheets of 4 ~ 5 nm thick inherit specific layered atomic structures of 2D MXene through in-situ ultrafast reactions in molten-salt, and thus are composed of few layers with ~ 0.8 nm layer spacing. The MXene-based composite as an anode delivers high discharge capacity of 204 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1, rate capability (115 mAh g−1 at 1000 mA g−1) and remarkable cycling stability with 193 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at 100 mA g−1. This are attributed to high surface capacitive contributions of the unique 2D/2D robust hybrid architecture that provides enough spaces to accelerate ionic transfer and favorable tolerance to volume variation. This work provides an effective route to rapid generation of MXene-based 2D/2D hierarchical composites for many applications.

Abstract:A novel porous structure MnO-SiOx @C composite has been designed and prepared as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries through scalable spray pyrolysis and a subsequent annealing process. XRD, SEM, TEM, Raman, and BET measurements indicate that the MnO-SiOx @C composite displays a spherical mesoporous structure with SiOx particles, embedded in the porous MnO structure combined with carbon coated on the surfaces. The enhanced electrochemical performance can be attributed to the mutual segregation of the heterogeneous oxides of MnO and SiOx during delithiation and the buffer composition region at the origin of uniform carbon layers and abundant nanopores. In addition, the new phase Mn2SiO4, which is formed in the MnO-SiOx @C composite after 800 ºC, can act as the joint between MnO and SiOx to restrain the strain force originating from the volume change during the charge and discharge process. As a result, the obtained MnO-SiOx @C composite exhibits significantly enhanced electrochemical performance in terms of high Coulombic efficiency, excellent rate capability and good cyclability.

Abstract:In lithium batteries, composite solid electrolytes gain their reputation owing to their great safety, excellent mechanical properties, and remarkably improved electrochemical performance. Herein, composite polyethylene oxide (PEO)‐based solid electrolytes with well‐dispersed in situ polydopamine‐coated lithium montmorillonite (PDA@LiMMT) nanofillers are successfully fabricated. The involvement of PDA@LiMMT retards significantly the crystallization of PEO, addressing a manifest enhancement in the ionic conductivity of the modified composite solid electrolyte. A conducive ionic conductivity value of 3.06 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 60 °C is reached, while the electrochemical window widens to 4.7 V. The assembled Li/solid polymer electrolytes/LiFePO 4 battery exhibits a 158.2 mA h g −1 high discharge specific capacity at a current density of 0.5C; besides, the capacity retention rate keeps 86% after 200 cycles. The enhancement of the cycle stability of the solid‐state batteries highlights the excellent interfacial stability between the modified solid electrolytes and the lithium electrode, which originates from lithiophilicity of PDA.
