Abstract:Bamboo particles (BPs) and ultrafine bamboo-char (UFBC) were introduced into polypropylene (PP) biocomposites by melt-blending and injection molding, to improve the mechanical and thermal properties of PP matrix. The maximum tensile strength of 30.59 MPa was obtained when the ratio was 70/25/5, which was improved by 30% than that of pure PP. The maximum tensile modulus of 460.13 MPa was achieved when the ratio was 70/20/10, which was enhanced by 109%, 35% and 24% than that of neat PP, PP/BP (70/30), and PP/UFBC (70/30), respectively. The mechanical and thermal properties of the biocomposites were improved through adding UFBC. Improvement evidences on interfacial interaction and elemental distribution were observed by scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectrum analysis. The maximum melting temperature of 166.6 degrees C was achieved that was increased 5.9 degrees C than neat PP. Abstract:To improve the interfacial interaction between poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and bamboo particles (BP), sodium hydroxide solution was employed to pretreat BP, and then maleic anhydride (MAH) was used to compatibilize PLA/BP biocomposites. The biocomposites were prepared through melt blending and hot-pressing. Effects of MAH concentration on the properties of BP and PLA/BP biocomposites were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, mechanical measurements, differential scanning calorimetric, melt flow rate (MFR) analysis and scanning electron microscope. Results showed that interfacial interaction between PLA and BP in the biocomposites was improved with MAH compatibilizer. Tensile strength and elongation at break of PLA/BP biocomposites, reached maximal values of 47.6 MPa and 6.22 %, respectively, when treated with 1.0 % MAH. Maximal flexural strength of 72.61 MPa and flexural modulus of 4.65 GPa were obtained with 0.5 % MAH treatment, and thermal properties were also improved at this concentration. MFR of the blends was enhanced with MAH compatibilization.

Abstract:This novel study provides a strategy for improving the compatibility and properties of lignocellulose fiber-reinforced polymer composites. The nanosilica was loaded on the surface of bamboo fiber by silane coupling agent to prepare a modified bamboo fiber (MBF-Si), and the new composite (MBF-SiP) of MBF-Si and polypropylene (PP) was obtained by compounding and injection molding. The results suggest that, compared to existing composites developed so far, MBF-SiP shows better thermal properties due to its higher crystallization temperature (117.05°C), melting temperature (164.29°C), amount of degradation residue, and degradation temperature at which maximum weight loss occurs. The tight connection between bamboo fiber and nanosilica consumes many polar groups and increases the hydrophobicity of MBF-Si, which affords higher contact angles (> 98°) and lower water absorption (0.26%) of MBF-SiP. Moreover, better flexural strength (60.24 MPa), flexural modulus (3.94 GPa), tensile strength (35.54 MPa) and tensile modulus (0.34 GPa) are obtained in MBF-SiP due to its better interfacial compatibility; whereas MBF-Si addition results in lower elongation and impact strength of neat PP. Interestingly, the stable structure formed by the attachment of nanosilica on bamboo fiber surface restricts PP deformation effectively and MBF-SiP exhibits better stiffness, elasticity and dimensional stability.
Enhancement on the properties of polypropylene using bamboo particles: Effect of particle sizes and loadings

Abstract:Micro-size bamboo particles (BP) derived from abundant and renewable bamboo resources have attracted extensive attention due to its high aspect ratio and surface area. The employment of BP into polypropylene (PP) as fillers is an alternative for biomass value-added exploration. Micro-size BP was incorporated into PP matrix to obtain composites of good comprehensive performance. The composites were fabricated with different loadings of BP (BP: 10, 20, 30, 40wt%) by mixing and heat compression molding. Mechanical property, thermal property and morphological property of composites with two different sizes BP were comparatively investigated. Results showed that the tensile strength and flexural strength of composites decreased when the addition of BP exceed 20 wt%. Nevertheless, the coarser BP exhibited better reinforcing effect on PP, and the preferable mechanical property was acquired at 10 wt% BP loading, with which the tensile strength of PP improved by 99.8%. The incorporation of BP increased crystallization temperature and melting temperature of PP by about 5°C, respectively. The BP acted as nucleating agent in the PP/BP composites corroborated by the increased crystallinity, which was also well consistent with the strength enhancement. Interfacial adhesion between BP and PP was confirmed by the morphology observation by field emission scanning electron microscopy analysis.

Abstract:A method is addressed to prepare poly(hydroxybutyrate)/poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate)/starch (PHB/EVA/starch) blends with fine dispersion of starch, i.e. by an in situ compatibilization in the presence of maleic anhydride (MA) and peroxide. The starch particle size is reduced from hundreds-μm to sub-μm after the compatibilization accompanied by an improvement in interfacial adhesion. Meanwhile, starch-in-EVA-type morphology is observed in the blends. The EVA and starch gradually changed into a (partially) co-continuous phase with increasing MA content. Consequently, toughness of the blends was improved as evidenced by an increase in elongation at break and tensile-fracture energy (work). Cavitation, fibrillation and matrix yielding are regarded as the toughening mechanism for the compatibilized blends. In addition, the Tg of the EVA phase is dependent on its phase morphology in the blends while the thermal behavior of the PHB was only slightly affected by the compatibilization.

Abstract:Flame-retardant polypropylene (PP) samples were in situ compatibilized with maleic anhydride grafted PP. Compatibilization reaction was verified by an IR spectrum and gel content measurements. Electron microscopy images showed that compatibilization could considerably reduce the size of the flame-retardant domains, control the phase morphology, and improve the interfacial adhesion between PP and intumescent flame retardant (IFR) with different IFR loading levels. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) of flame-retardant PP increased to different extents after compatibilization, indicating an improvement in the flame retardancy. Compatibilization enhanced the thermal stability to some extent and remarkably delayed thermal oxidative degradation of flame-retardant PP. For PP containing 20 wt % flame retardant, the temperature at which the maximum weight loss rate occurred was enhanced by about 99 degrees C after compatibilization. The storage modulus and glass transition temperatures were elevated to different extents. Tensile strengths of samples reduced in the presence of flame retardant alone but in the additional presence of compatibilizer were restored to levels similar to those of pure PP. Elongation-at-break values, however, showed IFR concentration-dependent reductions that were less for compatibilized samples. Furthermore, the complex viscosity of a compatibilized PP melt turned slightly smaller, which is favorable to melt processing.

Abstract:The influence of different polyurethane prepolymers on the interfacial structure of bamboo flour/PBAT composite. This study focused on the preparation of bamboo flour/Poly (butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PBAT) composites with high bamboo flour content and high mechanical strength using polyurethane prepolymer as chemical–physical compatibilizer via in‐situ reaction. Additionally, this work explored the effects of different bamboo flour contents and different types of polyurethane prepolymers on the mechanical properties, morphology, thermodynamics, water absorption, and surface wettability of the bamboo flour/PBAT composites. The results showed that PBA‐based polyurethane prepolymer (PBAPU) was an effective compatibilizer, promoting the interfacial adhesion between bamboo flour and PBAT. The strength at break, elongation at break, and impact strength of composites with 50% bamboo flour content reached 19.56 MPa, 25.53%, and 12.8 KJ/m2. With the increase of bamboo flour content, the strength of composites was still higher. The addition of PBAPU enhanced the thermal stability, mechanical properties, water resistance, and hydroscopicity of the bamboo flour/PBAT composites. Furthermore, the compatibilization of PBA‐based polyurethane prepolymer on composites was better than that of PCL‐based polyurethane prepolymer. Overall, we provided an effective strategy for preparing renewable, green, and practical high‐bamboo flour composites. Highlights This work successfully prepared bamboo flour/PBAT composites with high bamboo content using an in‐situ melt blending reaction. A new interface structure of physical PBA‐PBA interaction between the PBAPU layer and PBAT matrix improved the compatibilization of the composites. PBAPU as a compatibilizer effectively improved the interface compatibility, thermal stability, and water resistance of Bamboo flour/PBAT blends. Bamboo flour/PBAT composites with high bamboo flour content have excellent mechanical properties.

Abstract:In this study, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV)/bamboo pulp fiber (BPF) composites were prepared by melt compounding and injection molding. The crystallization ability, tensile strength and modulus, flexural strength and modulus, and impact strength were found substantially increased by the addition of BPF. Tensile and flexural elongations were also moderately increased at low fiber contents (< 20%). BPF demonstrated not only higher strength and modulus, but also higher failure strain than the PHBV8 matrix. Boron nitride (BN) was also investigated as a nucleation agent for PHBV8 and maleic anhydride grafted PHBV8 (MA-PHBV8) as a compatibilizer for the composite system. BN was found to increase the overall properties of the neat polymer and the composites due to refined crystalline structures. MA-PHBV8 improved polymer/fiber interactions and therefore resulted in increased strength and modulus. However, the toughness of the composites was substantially reduced due to the hindrance to fiber pullout, a major energy dissipation source during the composite deformation.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to reduce the interfacial tension by increasing the better adhesion between different immiscible polymers phases and also to evaluate the mechanical, thermal and thermo-mechanical behavior of the immiscible polymer blends. Design/methodology/approach The polymer blend composite (PBC) was prepared using a twin-screw extruder followed by injection molding. Two different kinds of PBC with compatibilizer (Ethylene-n-Butylacrylate-Glycidyl methacrylate) of varying compositions like polybutylene terephthalate + poly trimethylene terephthalate and polybutylene terephthalate (30% glass filled) + poly trimethylene terephthalate were prepared and material behavior at various test conditions were studied. The effect of glass fiber reinforcement on polymer blend and the interlocking effect by the compatibilizer between the polymer phases were also assessed. Findings Mechanical behavior of PBC was estimated by tensile, flexural and angular impact tests. Likewise, the thermal deflection was studied with the help of heat deflection temperature test. Thermo-mechanical behavior likes storage modulus, loss modulus and loss tangent were studied using the dynamic mechanical analysis test. Morphological analysis was characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy. Originality/value This in turn makes the process easy to obtain the PBC having inherent mechanical, thermal and thermo-mechanically stable. And, it also enhances the mechanical properties like tensile, flexural and impact strength. Simultaneously, posse’s excellent heat deflection and thermo-mechanical behavior over a temperature range of 35–140oC at a constant frequency of 5 Hz.

Abstract:Poly(butylene adipate-butylene terephthalate) (PBAT) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) biodegradable composites have been prepared by the melt-blending method using a new methyl methacrylate and glycidyl methacrylate random copolymer (MG) as compatibilizer. The compatibilization reaction between the epoxy functional groups in MG and the carboxyl groups in PBAT and PLA resulted in the formation of branched PBAT-co-MG-co-PLA macromolecules and improved compatibility. The compatibilization effect induced higher glass transition temperature for PBAT and PLA. The addition of MG had little influence on the melting process of PBAT. However, the fine miscibility between PLA and MG inhibited cold crystallization and the following melting behavior of PLA. The compatibilization effect promoted the uniform dispersion and smaller particle size of the PLA phase, which enhanced the heterogeneous nucleation effect of PLA and induced higher crystallization temperature of PBAT. Dynamic rheological tests showed that PBAT/PLA/MG blends exhibited higher complex viscosity and modulus than PBAT and PBAT/PLA blend, proving the improved interfacial interaction and melt strength. Compared with the PBAT/PLA composite, PBAT/PLA/MG blends showed much better ductility and stiffness balance because of the compatibilization effect of MG. When MG concentration was 6 wt%, the blend achieved a maximum strain of 694% and tensile strength of 49.3 MPa, which were 1.8 and 4.3 times higher than those of the PBAT/PLA composite. Abstract:Compatibilization Reaction: Isocyanate groups of pMDI react witt OH of PBAT and then EVOH. Polymeric methylene diphenyl isocyanate (pMDI) was used as a reactive compatibilizer to improve the mechanical properties of the PBAT/EVOH blend. Initially, pMDI was blended with pure polymers. Adding pMDI led to a 10‐fold rise in the viscosity of PBAT/pMDI compared to pure PBAT, with an enhancement in tensile properties, attributed to pMDI's chain‐extending effect in the PBAT phase. Conversely, a reduction in the elongation at the break of EVOH/pMDI indicated a cross‐linking role for pMDI in the EVOH phase. Notably, the blend with 1 wt% of pMDI showed a high tensile strength of 38 MPa by route II, much above 13.5 MPa for the one prepared by route I, and 14 MPa for the blank PBAT/EVOH blend without pMDI. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, FE‐SEM images, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) results confirmed the occurrence of effective reactions in route II. Modification of the blend with pMDI decreased the crystallinity of EVOH, the size of EVOH droplets, and the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of the blends. However, an increase in the pMDI content above 0.5 wt% decreased OTR. Therefore, the modified blends of PBAT/EVOH with pMDI can be used as an efficient compatibilizer or adhesive layer in PBAT/EVOH blends or multilayer films for agricultural or food packaging applications.

Abstract:The interfacial compatibilization and dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in incompatible poly(lactic acid)/poly(butylene terephthalate adipate) (PLA/PBAT) composites are key points for evaluating the performance of the composites. To address this, a novel compatibilizer, sulfonate imidazolium polyurethane (IPU) containing PLA and poly(1,4-butylene adipate) segments modified CNTs, employed in conjunction with multi-component epoxy chain extender (ADR) to toughen synergistically PLA/PBAT composites. The thermal stability, rheological behavior, morphology, and mechanical properties of PLA/PBAT composites were performed by TGA, DSC, dynamic rheometer, SEM, tensile, and notched Izod impact measure. Moreover, the elongation at break and notched Izod impact strength of PLA5/PBAT5/4C/0.4I composites achieved 341 % and 61.8 kJ/m 2 respectively, whose tensile strength was 33.7 MPa. The interfacial compatibilization and adhesion were enhanced because of the interface reaction catalyzed by IPU and the refined co-continuous phase structure. The CNTs non-covalently modified by IPU that bridged at the PBAT phase and interface transferred the stress into the matrix, prevented the development of microcracks, and absorbed impact fracture energy in the form of pull-out of the matrix, inducing shear yielding and plastic deformation. This new type of compatibilizer with modified CNTs is of great significance for realizing the high performance of PLA/PBAT composites.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), encompassing both simple steatosis and non-alcoholic steato-hepatitis (NASH), is the most common cause of liver disease in Australia. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease needs to be considered in the context of the metabolic syndrome, as cardiovascular disease will account for much of the mortality associated with NAFLD. OBJECTIVE To provide an approach to the identification of NAFLD in general practice, the distinction between simple steatosis and NASH, and the management of these two conditions. DISCUSSION Non-alcoholic steato-hepatitis is more common in the presence of diabetes, obesity, older age and increased inflammation, and is more likely to progress to cirrhosis. Cirrhosis may be complicated by hepatocellular carcinoma or liver failure. Hepatocellular carcinoma has also been described in NASH without cirrhosis. Assessment and treatment of features of the metabolic syndrome may reduce associated cardiovascular mortality. Numerous agents have been evaluated, but weight loss remains the only effective treatment for NAFLD.

Abstract:In this work, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV)/bamboo Pulp fiber composites were melt-compounded and injection-molded. Tensile, impact and dynamic mechanical properties of the composites were Studied. In contrast to many other short natural fiber reinforced biocomposites which demonstrate decreased strain-at-break, impact toughness and tensile strength, the PHBV/bamboo pulp fiber composites displayed increased tensile strength and impact toughness, and maintained/increased strain-at-break. Microscopic study of the fracture surfaces revealed extensive fiber pullout in both tensile and impact tests. The fiber pullout Suggests insufficient interfacial adhesion between the fiber and the matrix. The pullout process in the impact testing dissipated a significant amount of energy and hence Substantially improved the impact toughness of the composites. With the improved interfacial adhesion provided by coupling agent polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate (pMDI), the strength and modulus of the composites were further increased. However, the toughness was decreased Clue to the inhibition of the fiber pullout. An acoustic emission test revealed a significantly different process of structural change for the composites with/without pMDI during tension test.

Abstract:Schematic description of the development of morphology for PBAT/PBAT‐MA/TPS blends. Poly(butylene adipate‐co‐butylene terephthalate) (PBAT)/thermoplastic starch (TPS) blends were prepared by melt blending. However, the processability and practical application of PBAT/TPS blends are limited by their poor compatibility. To enhance the compatibility between PBAT and TPS, PBAT was functionalized by maleic anhydride (MA) to prepare PBAT‐MA, and then it was employed as a compatibilizer for PBAT/PBAT‐MA/TPS blends. The effects of PBAT‐MA on the tensile properties, rheological properties, morphology, and dynamic mechanics of PBAT/PBAT‐MA/TPS blends were studied in detail. Rheological results revealed that the interaction between PBAT‐MA and TPS enhanced the segment entanglement ability and improved the compatibility of the blends, which enhanced the tensile properties of the blends. Compared with the PBAT/PBAT‐MA/TPS (50/0/50) blend, the tensile strength of the PBAT/PBAT‐MA/TPS (40/10/50) blend increased from 9.2 to 15.8 MPa, and the elongation at break increased from 326.9% to 1017.6%. The dynamic mechanical results showed that the Tg of PBAT and TPS were close to each other after the addition of PBAT‐MA, which confirmed that the compatibility of the blend was improved. This study provides a feasible approach to preparing high‐performance and cost‐effective PBAT/PBAT‐MA/TPS blends while expanding the application prospects of PBAT in the packaging industry and agricultural film.

Serological response to rubella revaccination.

Abstract:To document the serological response, 21 seronegative rubella vaccinees (hemagglutination inhibition [HI] titer less than 10) were revaccinated with RA 27/3 rubella vaccine. All demonstrated an anamnestic response. Although RA 27/3 vaccine was an effective booster, antibody boost was not maintained in some persons. Of 15 persons tested, 24 to 27 months after revaccination, six had a significant HI antibody drop (fourfold or greater); only one had lost all detectable HI antibody. Although all 21 study participants were initially HI seronegative by rubella HI testing, 16 (76.2%) possessed neutralization and/or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay antibodies before revaccination. As more persons with vaccine-induced immunity join the adult population pool, more sensitive test methods may be needed to assess serological status accurately.

Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA) is considered a mature alternative to synthetic plastics made from petroleum by-products, possessing the advantages of good mechanical strength. However, it also has some disadvantages such as brittleness and low toughness. In order to overcome and improve some of these unfavorable properties, PLA/PBAT composites were prepared by blending PLA with Poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), and adding 4,4′-methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and chitosan nanoparticles (ChNPs) as compatibilizers to investigate the effects of different compatibilizers on the properties of the composites. The main observations are as follows: FT-IR indicated that MDI did not add new groups, while the addition of ChNPs added a substantial amount of hydroxyl and methylene groups. The addition of both MDI and ChNPs did not have any effect on the crystalline shape of the composites, but could potentially reduce their crystallinity, increase the melt peak temperature, wet the boundary of the PLA and PBAT phases, decrease the size of the dispersed phases, reduce the number of dispersed phases, and improve interfacial compatibility. The incorporation of MDI increased the tensile strength from 13.02 MPa to 19.24 MPa, whereas the addition of ChNPs substantially enhanced the elongation at the break from 3.84% to 19.24%. Furthermore, the inclusion of MDI conferred enhanced moisture resistance, whereas the addition of ChNPs seemed to weaken the resistance to moisture.

Abstract:Biodegradable plastics such as Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) are commonly used in composite fabrication and applications. However, their inherent properties limit their use. In this study, Epoxidised soyabean oil (ESO) compatibilized PLA/PBAT was filled with modified bamboo fiber (BF). The BF was modified in a two-stage environmentally friendly process involving steam treatment followed by a new approach to hydrophobic natural fiber modification with naturally occurring fatty acid (myristic acid) (MA). Then, the ESO/PLA/PBAT/BF composite was fabricated, and the influence of the new fiber modification method on the toughness and interface bonding of the composite was studied. The composite was characterized using mechanical analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), water contact angle measurement, and statistical methods. The melting behavior was also studied using Vicat softening and heat deflection temperatures. The ESO compatibilisation improved the compatibility of the PLA/PBAT blend, resulting in a continuous PLA/PBAT phase, as evidenced by the interface modulus, glass transition temperature, and fractured surface. The modification of BF enhanced its dispersion in the matrix and improved interfacial adhesion. Elongation at break and impact toughness were improved by more than double compared to neat PLA. Adding PBAT and modified BF to PLA resulted in a thermally stable composite. The statistical analysis results suggested that BF modification and BF loading significantly influenced the composite strength and toughness (P ≤ 0.05). The tough and flexible composite material can used in flexible/lightweight and impact-resistant applications, consumer goods, and heat shields.

Abstract:Core-shell modifiers of MB-g-GMA have been synthesized by emulsion polymerization technique. For these modifiers, the core is made up of the crosslinked poly(butadiene) and the shell is methyl methacrylate (MMA) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) copolymer. These modifiers were used to toughen poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT)/bisphenol A polycarbonate (PC) blends. The mechanical properties showed that the addition of 15% MB-g-GMA had a very good influence on the notched Izod impact strength and elongation at break of the PBT/PC blends. DMA results showed PBT was partially miscible with PC and the addition of MB-g-GMA further improved the miscibility of PBT and PC. DSC tests further testified the introduction of MB-g-GMA improved miscibility between PBT and PC. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) displayed a very good dispersion of MB-g-GMA particles in PBT/PC blend. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) proved MB-g-GMA particles were enveloped by a thin layer of PC, PBT and PC showed co-continuous structure or dispersed phase which depended on the content of MB-g-GMA. SEM results showed shear yielding of the matrix and cavitation of rubber particles were the major toughening mechanisms.
