Abstract:Measuring gases for environmental monitoring is a demanding task that requires long periods of observation and large numbers of sensors. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) currently represent the best alternative to monitor large, remote, and difficult access areas, as these technologies have the possibility of carrying specialized gas sensing systems. This paper presents the development and integration of a WSN and an UAV powered by solar energy in order to enhance their functionality and broader their applications. A gas sensing system implementing nanostructured metal oxide (MOX) and non-dispersive infrared sensors was developed to measure concentrations of CH4 and CO2. Laboratory, bench and field testing results demonstrate the capability of UAV to capture, analyze and geo-locate a gas sample during flight operations. The field testing integrated ground sensor nodes and the UAV to measure CO2 concentration at ground and low aerial altitudes, simultaneously. Data collected during the mission was transmitted in real time to a central node for analysis and 3D mapping of the target gas. The results highlights the accomplishment of the first flight mission of a solar powered UAV equipped with a CO2 sensing system integrated with a WSN. The system provides an effective 3D monitoring and can be used in a wide range of environmental applications such as agriculture, bushfires, mining studies, zoology and botanical studies using a ubiquitous low cost technology.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with a miniaturized sensor package were developed for aerial observations, which realizes aerial observations affordable to scientists in atmospheric science and achieves aerial measurements in high spatial resolution. UAVs are deployed to a variety of aerial detecting tasks in different scientific scenarios including chemical industry parks (CIPs) with hazardous gases emissions, and some places difficult for humans to reach. In this study, UAV sensing technology was deployed to detect air pollutants in a suburb, a CIP and a natural gas plant, respectively. The effects of atmospheric conditions such as the atmospheric boundary layer height, long-distance transport and atmospheric stability on the spatiotemporal variations of the air pollutants vertical profiles were investigated by the UAV. The UAV with the sensor package was deployed to capture the methane (CH 4 ) leakages in a natural gas plant. The spatiotemporal variations of CH 4 in both vertical and horizontal directions studied by UAV were employed to calculate accurate CH 4 emissions, which is crucial to reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases. The low-cost UAV sensing technology for air pollutants was developed by Dr. Xiaobing Pang, who was funded by the Newton Fellowship in 2009 and worked in the University of York. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Royal Society Newton International Fellowship’.

Abstract:With the increasing trend in the global average temperature, the UK's water industry has committed to achieve Net Zero by 2030 and part of this includes cutting CH4 emissions from sludge treatment facilities. Currently, emissions are estimated following the carbon accounting workbook guidelines and using default emission factors. However, this method might not be a true representation of emissions as these vary depending on many factors. The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has proved cost effective for environmental monitoring tasks requiring high spatial resolution information. Within the context of CH4 emissions and in the last decade, the technology has been curtailed by sensor weight and size. Recent advances in sensor technology have enabled the development of a fit-for purpose UAV CH4 sensor (U10) which uses Tuneable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy. This study intends to develop a framework for CH4 data collection strategies from sludge treatment centres using UAV-U10 technology and asset level CH4 enhancement estimations based on geostatistical interpolation techniques and the mass balance approach. The framework presented here enables the characterization of spatial and temporal variations in CH4 concentrations. It promotes asset level CH4 enhancement estimation based on on-site measurements.

Abstract:This paper proposes the development of real-time air quality monitor system based on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which can effectively compensate for the lack of mobility and immediateness of air pollution monitoring operations. The system includes a detection sampling site and a ground receiving station, using wireless communication to performs data transmission and remote control. And the detection sampling terminal uses an unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with a microcontroller, volatile organic compounds, temperature and humidity sensing modules. The detection sampling terminal can detect air quality, and carries a gas sampling tank to collect air samples. The ground receiving station can remotely control the detection sampling terminal, display and record the received air data.

Abstract:We developed and tested a complete measurement system to quantify CO 2 and CH 4 emissions at the scale of an industrial site based on the innovative sensor Airborne Ultra-light Spectrometer for Environmental Application (AUSEA), operated on board uncrewed aircraft vehicles (UAVs). The AUSEA sensor is a new light-weight (1.4 kg) open-path laser absorption spectrometer simultaneously recording in situ CO 2 and CH 4 concentrations at high frequency (24 Hz in this study) with precisions of 10 ppb for CH 4 and 1 ppm for CO 2 (when averaged at 1 Hz). It is suitable for industrial operation at a short distance from the sources (sensitivity up to 1000 ppm for CO 2 and 200 ppm for CH 4 ). Greenhouse gas concentrations monitored by this sensor throughout a plume cross section downwind of a source drive a simple mass balance model to quantify emissions from this source.

Abstract:Methane ( CH 4 ) is a powerful greenhouse gas that is produced by a diverse set of natural and anthropogenic emission sources. Biogenic methane sources generally involve anaerobic decay processes such as those occurring in wetlands, melting permafrost, or the digestion of organic matter in the guts of ruminant animals. Thermogenic CH 4 sources originate from the breakdown of organic material at high temperatures and pressure within the Earth's crust, a process which also produces more complex trace hydrocarbons such as ethane ( C 2 H 6 ). Here, we present the development and deployment of an uncrewed aerial system (UAS) that employs a fast (1 Hz ) and sensitive (1–0.5 ppb s −1 ) CH 4 and C 2 H 6 sensor and ultrasonic anemometer. The UAS platform is a vertical-takeoff, hexarotor drone (DJI Matrice 600 Pro, M600P) capable of vertical profiling to 120 m altitude and plume sampling across scales up to 1 km . Simultaneous measurements of CH 4 and C 2 H 6 concentrations, vector winds, and positional data allow for source classification (biogenic versus thermogenic), differentiation, and emission rates without the need for modeling or a priori assumptions about winds, vertical mixing, or other environmental conditions. The system has been used for direct quantification of methane point sources, such as orphan wells, and distributed emitters, such as landfills and wastewater treatment facilities. With detectable source rates as low as 0.04 and up to ∼ 1500 kg h −1 , this UAS offers a direct and repeatable method of horizontal and vertical profiling of emission plumes at scales that are complementary to regional aerial surveys and localized ground-based monitoring.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, a reflective methane (CH 4 ) gas telemetry system has been developed based on the direct optical absorption spectroscopy technique for an open light path. It can realize the real-time in-situ monitoring of CH 4 gas within a range of 150 m. Considering the potential cross-interference effects of hydrocarbon gases in ambient air, a diode laser operating at a specific wavelength of 1653.7 nm is employed to target the strong CH 4 absorption line in near-infrared region and therefore avoid the interference of water vapor absorption simultaneously. A measurement precision of 0.02 ppm within 40 m open optical path has been achieved over 30 h of continuous monitoring, indicating the excellent measuring sensitivity and stability of our telemetry system. Through the field test of leaked CH 4 gas with a 150 m one-way open optical path, the developed CH 4 telemetry system has proved to have great potential and reliability for environmental monitoring and remote gas detection in various industries.

Abstract:Enhancement of methane emission measurement techniques is necessary to address the need for greenhouse gas emissions monitoring. Here we introduce a gas analyzer designed for remote sensing of atmospheric methane aboard unmanned aerial vehicles. This device employs the wavelength modulation spectroscopy approach and quadrature detection of laser radiation scattered from the underlying surface. Our results demonstrate that the observed correlation between various signal attributes and the distance to the surface, where laser radiation scatters, aligns with analytical expectations. Calibrations proved that the instrument provides reliable methane measurements up to 120 meters while being lightweight and power efficient. Notably, this device outperforms its competitors at altitudes exceeding 50 meters, which is safer for piloting.

Abstract:Summary With atmospheric methane concentrations rising and spurring increased social concern, there is a renewed focus in the oil and gas industry on methane emission monitoring and control. In 2019, a methane emission survey at a bp asset west of Shetland was conducted using a closed-cavity methane spectrometer mounted onboard a long-endurance fixed-wing uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV). This flight represents the first methane emissions survey of an offshore facility with a miniature methane spectrometer onboard a UAV with subsequent flights performed. A small laser spectrometer was modified from an open-cavity system to a closed-cavity onboard the aircraft and yielded in-flight detection limits (3 seconds) of 1,065 ppb methane above background for the 2019/2020 sensor version and 150 ppb for the 2021 sensor versions. Through simulation, the minimum detection limits of sensors in mass flow rate were determined to be 50 kg/h for the 2019/2020 campaign and 2.5 kg/h for the 2021 campaigns, translating to an obtainable measurement for 23% and 82% of assets reporting higher than 1 kg/h according to the 2019 Environmental Emissions Monitoring System (EEMS) data set, respectively. To operationalize the approach, a simulation tool for flight planning was developed using a Gaussian plume model and a scaled coefficient of variation to invoke expected methane concentration fluctuations at short time intervals. Two methods were developed to calculate offshore facility-level emission rates from the geolocated methane concentration data acquired during the emission surveys. Furthermore, a Gaussian plume simulator was developed to predict plume behavior and aid in error analysis. These methods are under evaluation, but all allow for the rapid processing (<24 hours) of results upon landing the aircraft. Additional flights were conducted in 2020 and 2021 with bp and several UK North Sea operators through a Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC)-funded project, resulting in a total of 18 methane emission survey flights to 11 offshore assets between 2019 and 2021. The 2019 flight, and subsequent 2020–2021 flights, demonstrated the potential of the technology to derive facility-level emission rates to verify industry emission performance and data.

Abstract:Monitoring methane emissions from oil and gas facilities requires the combination of several technologies to gain a full understanding of the challenge at a manageable cost. The integration of frequent and affordable high resolution satellite measurements to find the larger leaks with less frequent, but more expensive, aerial surveys, forms the basis of a tiered monitoring system showing great promise to optimise leak detection and repair activities. In this extended abstract, examples of methane emissions measurements from controlled releases and at oil and gas facilities acquired with both GHGSat’s second satellite, Iris (launched in September 2020) and the airborne variant of the same sensor are presented. While the combination of different technologies is not uncommon, this system is the first in the world utilising the same sensor at two different altitudes. The performance parameters of each system are highlighted and supported with recent examples. In addition, the advantages of the hybrid system will be discussed, including the opportunity for cross-validation of measurements. Finally, the potential of such a system to be used for regulatory reporting purposes will be discussed and contrasted to the standard of performing optical gas imaging camera campaigns three times a year used in some jurisdictions, notably in Canada and the United States.

Abstract:A new digital BIST structure is proposed in this paper. During test mode, the op amp under test is placed in a voltage follower configuration in order to detect its slew-rate deviation, or in a comparator configuration in order to detect its signal propagation delay deviation. The test stimuli and the BIST control signals are simply derived from the test control signal TST using delay elements and logical gates. The test response is analyzed by using pure digital circuitry. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed technique with a low area overhead.
A Study of a Miniature TDLAS System Onboard Two Unmanned Aircraft to Independently Quantify Methane Emissions from Oil and Gas Production Assets and Other Industrial Emitters

Abstract:In recent years, industries such as oil and gas production, waste management, and renewable natural gas/biogas have made a concerted effort to limit and offset anthropogenic sources of methane emissions. However, the state of emissions, what is emitting and at what rate, is highly variable and depends strongly on the micro-scale emissions that have large impacts on the macro-scale aggregates. Bottom-up emissions estimates are better verified using additional independent facility-level measurements, which has led to industry-wide efforts such as the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP) push for more accurate measurements. Robust measurement techniques are needed to accurately quantify and mitigate these greenhouse gas emissions. Deployed on both fixed-wing and multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), a miniature tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) sensor has accurately quantified methane emissions from oil and gas assets all over the world since 2017. To compare bottom-up and top-down measurements, it is essential that both values are accompanied with a defensible estimate of measurement uncertainty. In this study, uncertainty has been determined through controlled release experiments as well as statistically using real field data. Two independent deployment methods for quantifying methane emissions utilizing the in situ TDLAS sensor are introduced: fixed-wing and multi-rotor. The fixed-wing, long-endurance UAV method accurately measured emissions with an absolute percentage difference between emitted and mass flux measurement of less than 16% and an average error of 6%, confirming its suitability for offshore applications. For the quadcopter rotary drone surveys, two flight patterns were performed: perimeter polygons and downwind flux planes. Flying perimeter polygons resulted in an absolute error less than 36% difference and average error of 16.2%, and downwind flux planes less than 32% absolute difference and average difference of 24.8% when flying downwind flux planes. This work demonstrates the applicability of ultra-sensitive miniature spectrometers for industrial methane emission quantification at facility level with many potential applications.

Sensitive Drone Mapping of Methane Emissions without the Need for Supplementary Ground-Based Measurements

Abstract:Methane (CH4) is one of the main greenhouse gas for which sources and sinks are poorly constrained and better capacity of mapping landscape emissions are broadly requested. A key challenge has been comprehensive, accurate, and sensitive emission measurements covering large areas at a resolution that allows separation of different types of local sources. We present a sensitive drone-based system for mapping CH4 hotspots, finding leaks from gas systems, and calculating total CH4 fluxes from anthropogenic environments such as wastewater treatment plants, landfills, energy production, biogas plants, and agriculture. All measurements are made on-board the drone, with no requirements for additional ground-based instruments. Horizontal flight patterns are used to map and find emission sources over large areas and vertical flight patterns for total CH4 fluxes using mass balance calculations. The small drone system (6.7 kg including batteries, sensors, loggers, and weather proofing) maps CH4 concentrations and wind speeds at 1 Hz with a precision of 0.84 ppb/s and 0.1 m/s, respectively. As a demonstration of the system and the mass balance method for a CH4 source that is difficult to assess with traditional methods, we have quantified fluxes from a sludge deposit at a wastewater treatment plant. Combining data from three 10 min flights, emission hotspots could be mapped and a total flux of 178.4 ± 8.1 kg CH4 d-1 was determined.
Developing of Low-Cost Air Pollution Sensor-Measurements with the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in Poland

Abstract:This article presents the capabilities and selected measurement results from the newly developed low-cost air pollution measurement system mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The system is designed and manufactured by the authors and is intended to facilitate, accelerate, and ensure the safety of operators when measuring air pollutants. It allows the creation of three-dimensional models and measurement visualizations, thanks to which it is possible to observe the location of leakage of substances and the direction of air pollution spread by various types of substances. Based on these models, it is possible to create area audits and strategies for the elimination of pollution sources. Thanks to the usage of a multi-socket microprocessor system, the combination of nine different air quality sensors can be installed in a very small device. The possibility of simultaneously measuring several different substances has been achieved at a very low cost for building the sensor unit: 70 EUR. The very small size of this device makes it easy and safe to mount it on a small drone (UAV). Because of this device, many harmful chemical compounds such as ammonia, hexane, benzene, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide, as well as flammable substances such as hydrogen and methane, can be detected. Additionally, a very important function is the ability to perform measurements of PM2.5 and PM10 suspended particulates. Thanks to the use of UAV, the measurement is carried out remotely by the operator, which allows us to avoid the direct exposure of humans to harmful factors. A big advantage is the quick measurement of large spaces, at different heights above the ground, in different weather conditions. Because of the three-dimensional positioning from GPS receiver, users can plot points and use colors reflecting a concentration of measured features to better visualize the air pollution. A human-friendly data output can be used to determine the mostly hazardous regions of the sampled area.
On the Use of Multicopters for Sampling and Analysis of Volatile Organic Compounds in the Air by Adsorption/thermal Desorption GC-MS

Abstract:We describe a new approach for the determination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at precise locations in the air using active sampling on sorbent tubes outfitted to an inexpensive multicopter and analysis by thermal desorption (TD) gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The aerial sampling method permits for the simultaneous collection of multiple air samples on separate TD tubes concurrently, increasing sample throughput compared to single canister sampling. Furthermore, the method is relatively inexpensive when compared to similar approaches, with overall costs below about $2000 (U.S. dollars). To demonstrate applicability, we measured VOCs at several heights near anthropogenic sources in the mid-south USA, including a municipal landfill, petroleum refinery, and a coal-fired power plant (CFPP), and within the canopy of a loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) forest. Concentrations of benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) were higher (p < 0.05) downwind of the refinery and CFPP compared to upwind. We observed both a unique mixture of VOCs at each site and higher concentrations of abundant VOCs downwind compared to upwind of the point sources and within versus above the forest canopy. Overall, this feasibility study demonstrates that highly maneuverable multicopters can be used to probe VOC concentrations aloft and thus have great potential to be utilized in unique sampling situations and for vertical profiling.

Abstract:Records and projections of increasing global average temperature call for improvements of global stocktake inputs, which are vital to achieving targets of intergovernmental agreements on climate change. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based atmospheric observation of greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations is an upcoming addition to the top-down measurement methods due to its advantageous spatial-temporal resolutions, greater coverage area and lower costs. Hence, we developed and tested a lightweight UAV payload enclosure integrating a non-dispersive diffusion infrared (NDIR) spectrometer and two electrochemical sensors for measurements of carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). To achieve higher response times and maintain measurement qualities, we designed a custom air inlet on the rotor-facing side of the enclosure to reduce measurement fluctuations caused by rotor downwash airflow. To validate the payload design, we conducted a controlled test for comparing chambered and chamber-less NDIR spectrometer measurements. From the test we observed a reduction of 0.48 hPa in terms of standard deviation of pressure measurements and minimised downwash-flow-induced anomalous biases (+0.49 ppm and +0.08 hpa for chambered compared to −1.33 ppm and −1.05 hpa for chamber-less). We also conducted an outdoor in-situ measurement test with multiple flights reaching 500 m above ground level (ABGL). The test yielded high resolution results representing vertical distributions of mole fraction concentrations of three types of gases via two types of flight trajectory planning methods. Therefore, we provide an alternative UAV payload integration method for NDIR spectrometer CO2 measurements that complement existing airborne GHG observation methodologies. Additionally, we also introduced an aerodynamic approach in reducing measurement noises and biases for a low response time sensor configuration.

Abstract:In order to make a fast and accurate response to gas leakage event, e.g. gas leakage in hydrogen storage station, it is very important to identify and locate the leakage source accurately and quickly. Due to the flexibility and the adaptability of robots to harsh environments, leakage source tracing based on mobile robots has attracted more and more attention. However, the existing ground robots are limited by the ground environment and thus it is difficult to trace and locate the leakage in the complex environment with ground robots. Although unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) can overcome the limitation of ground obstacles, there are still some problems in the accuracy and reliability of gas sampling due to the interference of flow field caused by UAV rotors to the surrounding gases. Based on computational fluid dynamic simulation, a simulation model of UAV with four rotors was established. Combined with test experiments, the influence of flow field around UAV on gas sampling under different UAV speeds, rotors assembly structures, leakage, and sampling conditions was analyzed and investigated. The optimized UAV assembly structure and gas sensor installation position were determined and verified by the simulations and experiments. The results showed that the sensor was less affected by the rotor airflow when the UAV rotor was reversely assembled and the gases were sampled above the UAV. This research can provide a guidance for gas sampling for emission source tracing with UAV for process safety management of energy gas storage.

Abstract:This study presents an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform used to resolve horizontal and vertical patterns of CO 2 and CH 4 mole fractions within the lower part of the atmospheric boundary layer. The obtained data contribute important information for upscaling fluxes from natural ecosystems over heterogeneous terrain, and for constraining hot spots of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This observational tool, therefore, has the potential to complement existing stationary carbon monitoring networks for GHGs, such as eddy covariance towers and manual flux chambers. The UAV platform is equipped with two gas analyzers for CO 2 and CH 4 which are connected sequentially. In addition, a 2D anemometer is deployed above the rotor plane to measure environmental parameters including 2D wind speed, air temperature, humidity, and pressure. Laboratory and field tests demonstrate that the platform is capable of providing data with reliable accuracy, with good agreement between the UAV data and tower-based measurements of CO 2 and CH 4 , and wind speed. Using interpolated maps of GHG mole fractions, with this tool we assessed the signal variability over a target area, and identified potential hot spots. Our study shows that the UAV platform provides information about the spatial variability of the lowest part of the boundary layer, which up to this date remains poorly observed, especially in remote areas such as the Arctic. Furthermore, using the profile method, it is demonstrated that the GHG fluxes from a local source can be calculated. Although subject to large uncertainties over the area of interest, the comparison between the eddy covariance method and UAV-based calculations showed acceptable qualitative agreement.
