Abstract:A strong chiral optical response induced at a plasmonic Fano resonance in a planar Au heptamer nanostructure was experimentally and theoretically demonstrated. The scattering spectra show the characteristic narrow-band feature of Fano resonances for both left and right circular polarized lights, with a chiral response reaching 30% at the Fano resonance. Specifically, we systematically investigate the chiral response of planar heptamers with gradually changing the inter-particle rotation angles and separation distance. The chiral spectral characteristics clearly depend on the strength of Fano resonances and the associated near-field optical distributions. Finite element method simulations together with a multipole expansion method demonstrate that the enhanced chirality is caused by the excitation of magnetic quadrupolar and electric toroidal dipolar modes. Our work provides an effective method for the design of 2D nanostructures with a strong chiral response.

Abstract:The effects of Fano resonance on the optical chirality of planar plasmonic nanodevices in the visible wavelength range are experimentally observed and theoretically explained. The nanodevice consists of a nanodisk at the center with six gold nanorods with an orientation angle to exhibit optical chirality under dark-field illumination. The chiral response induced by the gold nanorods are affected by the presence of the nanodisk with different diameters which causes Fano resonance. An intriguing change to the opposite selection preference of different handedness of the circularly polarized light has been clearly observed experimentally. This change of the preference is understood based on the extended coupled oscillator model. Moreover, electrostatic analysis and the time-dependent simulations provide a further understanding of the phenomenon. The observed and understood effects of Fano resonance on optical chirality enables effective manipulation of chiral characteristics of planar subwavelength nanodevices.

Abstract:We demonstrate strong chiral optical response in three-dimensional chiral nanoparticle oligomers in the wavelength regime between 700 and 3500 nm. We show in experiment and simulation that this broad-band response occurs at the onset of charge transfer between the individual nanoparticles. The ohmic contact causes a strong red shift of the fundamental mode, while the geometrical shape of the resulting fused particles still allows for an efficient excitation of higher order modes. Calculated spectra and field distributions confirm our interpretation and show a number of interacting plasmonic modes. Our results deepen the understanding of the chiral optical response in complex chiral plasmonic nanostructures and pave the road toward broad-band chiral optical devices with strong responses, for example, for chiral plasmon rulers or sensing applications.
Fano resonance assisting plasmonic circular dichroism from nanorice heterodimers for extrinsic chirality

Abstract:In this work, the circular dichroisms (CD) of nanorice heterodimers consisting of two parallel arranged nanorices with the same size but different materials are investigated theoretically. Symmetry-breaking is introduced by using different materials and oblique incidence to achieve strong CD at the vicinity of Fano resonance peaks. We demonstrate that all Au-Ag heterodimers exhibit multipolar Fano resonances and strong CD effect. A simple quantitative analysis shows that the structure with larger Fano asymmetry factor has stronger CD. The intensity and peak positions of the CD effect can be flexibly tuned in a large range by changing particle size, shape, the inter-particle distance and surroundings. Furthermore, CD spectra exhibit high sensitivity to ambient medium in visible and near infrared regions. Our results here are beneficial for the design and application of high sensitive CD sensors and other related fields.

Abstract:The plasmonic chiroptical effect has been used to manipulate chiral states of light, where the strong field enhancement and light localization in metallic nanostructures can amplify the chiroptical response. Moreover, in metamaterials, the chiroptical effect leads to circular dichroism (CD), circular birefringence (CB), and asymmetric transmission. Potential applications enabled by chiral plasmonics have been realized in various areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology. In this review, both basic theories and state‐of‐the‐art studies on plasmonic chiroptical effects are summarized. Molecular chiroptical effects are drastically enhanced by metallic nanostructures that can generate a “superchiral” field, which arises from the strong electromagnetic interactions. Both intrinsic and extrinsic plasmonic chiral metamaterials formed by the periodic arrangement of metallic nanostructured units show high levels of CB, CD, and asymmetric transmission. Consequent applications including photo detection, molecular sensing, and chirality tuning are discussed, and a perspective of emerging concepts such as Pancharatnam−Berry (PB) phase in this booming research field is presented. This review focuses on plasmonic chiral nanostructures and their applications. The basic definition and physical origins of optical chirality are reviewed, the corresponding promising plasmonic applications are highlighted, including optical force, chiral detecting, and chirality tuning. The future development and perspective of chiral emerging concepts such as Pancharatnam−Berry (PB) phase are also presented.

Abstract:Chiral nanoplasmonics exhibits great potential for novel nanooptical devices due to the generation of a strong chiroptical response within nanoscale metallic structures. Recently, a number of different approaches have been utilized to create chiral nanoplasmonic structures. However, particularly for tailoring nanooptical chiral sensing devices, the understanding of the resulting chiroptical response when coupling chiral and achiral structures together is crucial and has not been completely understood to date. Here, we present a thorough and step-by-step experimental study to understand the intriguing chiral-achiral coupling scheme. We set up a hybrid plasmonic system, which bears resemblance to the 'host-guest' system in supramolecular chemistry to analyze and explain the complex chiral response both at the chiral and achiral plasmonic resonances. We also provide an elegant and simple analytical model, which can describe, predict, and comprehend the chiroptical spectra in detail. Our study will shed light on designing well-controlled chiral-achiral coupling platforms for reliable chiral sensing.
Robust Plasmonic Fano Resonances in π-Shaped Nanostructures

Abstract:Plasmonic Fano resonances hold immense potential for biosensors and optical information processing due to their sharp spectral response. A majority of nanogap-involved complex metallic nanostructures have been demonstrated to support Fano resonances, but the gap distance between the constituents are very difficult to control without the use of sophisticated microfabrication techniques. Here, we propose a simple π-shaped metallic nanostructure that is free from the particular requirement of nanogaps to generate a strong plasmonic Fano resonance. The plasmonic Fano resonance is demonstrated to be a result of the interference between a broad magnetic dipolar mode and a narrow electric quadrupolar mode. We realize the π-shaped nanostructure experimentally by employing the angle-resolved nanosphere lithography to produce partially overlapped double metallic nanotriangles. The effect of the geometry parameters including the length of the base and the size of π-shaped nanostructure on the Fano resonance is investigated in detail. As an application example, we further show that the π-shaped double metallic nanotriangles could be used as a Fano-based sensor for refractive index sensing, in which a threefold enhancement of sensitivity is achieved as compared with the single nanotriangle-based sensor.
Chiral plasmonic-dielectric coupling enables strong near-infrared chiroptical responses from helicoidal core-shell nanoparticles

Abstract:Helicoid plasmonic nanoparticles with intrinsic chirality are an emerging class of artificial chiral materials with tailorable properties. The ability to extend their chiroplasmonic responses to the near-infrared (NIR) range is critically important for biomedical and nanophotonic applications, yet the rational design of such materials remains challenging. Herein, a strategy employing chiral plasmon-dielectric coupling is proposed to manipulate the chiroptical responses into the NIR region with high optical anisotropy. Through this strategy, the helicoid Au@Cu2O nanoparticles with structural chirality are designed and synthesized with tunable and enriched NIR chiroptical responses. Specially, a high optical anisotropy (g-factor) with a value of 0.35 is achieved in the NIR region, and multi-band chiroptical behaviors are observed. Spectral and electromagnetic simulations elucidate that strong coupling between chiroplasmonic core and chiral dielectric shell with high refractive index contributes to the rich and strong chiroptical responses, which are related to the interplay between various emerged and enhanced electric and magnetic multipolar resonance modes proved by multipole expansion analysis. Moreover, the helicoid Au@Cu2O nanoparticles display greater polarization rotation capability than the helicoid Au nanoparticles. This work offers mechanistic insights into chiral plasmon-dielectric coupling and suggests a general approach of creating NIR chiroplasmonic materials.
Deep Fano Resonance with Strong Polarization Dependence in Gold Nanoplate-Nanosphere Heterodimers.

Abstract:Plasmonic Fano resonance arises from the destructive interference between a superradiant and a subradiant plasmon mode that overlap spectrally with each other. Because of its importance in revealing many physical phenomena and its applications in sensing, metamaterials, photoswitching and spectroscopy, a variety of metal nanostructures have been fabricated to generate Fano resonance. However, few metal nanostructures can support deep Fano resonance with strong polarization dependence. Herein, we report on the observation of deep Fano resonance with strong polarization dependence in Au nanoplate-nanosphere heterodimers. Experiments and simulations reveal that the presence of a nanosphere at one side edge or one vertex of the nanoplate causes distinct Fano resonance. With increasing nanosphere sizes, the shape of the scattering spectrum becomes more asymmetric, with the Fano dip getting deeper correspondingly. When the nanosphere diameter reaches 68 nm, the Fano dip almost reaches the spectral background. Moreover, the heterodimers with the nanosphere attached to one vertex of the nanoplate exhibit Fano resonance with strong polarization dependence. Such heterodimers are very attractive for constructing polarization-controlled plasmonic Fano switches.

Abstract:Metamaterials exhibiting orders-of-magnitude en-hanced artificial chiroptical response than natural counterparts have been intensely investigated. The underlying principle of these chiral responses heavily hinges on an elaborate nanostructure fabrication to generate either intrinsic geometry chirality or handedness-dependent mode interference. Here, we unveil that localized spontaneous chiroptical response can be leveraged by plasmonic nanoaggregates with a disordered coupling effect. The near-field coupling among disordered individual gold nanoparticles leads to localized hot spots that are sensitive to the handedness of light. As a consequence, the nearby nanoparticles showcase near-unity circular dichroism in linear absorption to left-and right-circularly polarized light. It directly leads to a subsequent selective photothermal deformation of plasmonic nanoparticles, which produces prominent nonlinear circular dichroism in two-photon fluorescence by circular polarization beams. Such localized spontaneous chirality is then experimentally evidenced by nanoscale multiplexing watermarks in polychromatic beams with left-and right-circular polarizations. Our results might open a new strategy to tailor the chiroptical response in disordered photonic systems and facilitate the study of chiral light-matter interactions at the deep-subwavelength regime.

Abstract:AbstractThe rapid developments in nanotechnology and plasmonics allow the manipulation of light at nanometer scales, such as light propagation and resonances. Differing from the symmetric Lorentzian‐like profiles in the conventional resonances, Fano resonances, which originate from the interference of different resonant modes, exhibit obviously asymmetric spectral profiles. Based on lineshape engineering, the Fano resonances with sharp asymmetric profiles exhibit a small linewidth and a high spectral contrast by exploiting different mechanisms and designing various metallic nanostructures. Both of the above properties in the sharp Fano resonances have significant applications in nanoscale plasmonic sensors and modulators. This review summarizes the underlying mechanism of the Fano resonances in various metallic nanostructures. Then, practical applications of the Fano resonances in nanoscale plasmonic sensing and modulation are reviewed. At last, the development and challenges of plasmonic sensing and modulation based on Fano resonances are discussed.

Abstract:Significant chiroptical responses could be generated by chiral coupling of achiral plasmonic nanoparticles, or originated from intrinsically chiral plasmonic nanoparticles. Here we create dimeric plasmonic metamolecules possessing both chiral coupling between nanoparticles and intrinsic chiroptical responses derived from nanoparticles themselves. These plasmonic metamolecules are prepared by assembling helical plasmonic nanorods (HPNRs) with intrinsic chirality in chiral manners on DNA origami template. Two HPNRs with the same or opposite chirality, or one HPNR and one achiral gold nanorod, are coupled chirally into dimeric metamolecules with intriguing plasmonic circular dichroism (PCD). We found that both of the intrinsic chirality of constituent HPNRs and the chiral coupling contribute to the overall PCD while their weights are different in different metamolecules and vary in different wavelength range for a certain metamolecule. Comparing to conventional chiral plasmonic metamolecules from achiral nanoparticles, or discrete chiral nanoparticles, these metamolecules bring more dimensions for tailoring chiroptical responses and make it more flexible to design plasmonic nanodevices with custom PCD.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the plasmon coupling in metallic nanorod dimers. A pronounced dip is found in the extinction spectrum due to plasmonic Fano resonance, which is induced by destructive interference between the bright dipole plasmon of a short nanorod and the dark quadrupole plasmon of a long nanorod. This Fano interference can also be explained as the coupling between the bright and dark modes both supported by the whole dimer. The Fano resonance can be tuned by adjusting the spatial or spectral separation between two nanorods in the dimer.

Abstract:Fano resonance can be achieved by the destructive interference between a superradiant bright mode and a subradiant dark mode. A variety of artificial plasmonic oligomers have been fabricated to generate Fano resonance for its extensive applications. However, the Fano resonance in plasmonic oligomer systems comes from the interaction of all metal particles, which greatly limits the tunability of the Fano resonance. Besides, only a single Fano resonance is supported by many existing plasmonic oligomers, while multiple Fano resonances mostly occur in complex and multilayer structures, whose fabrication is greatly challenging. Here, a simple asymmetric plasmonic molecule consisting of a central metal disk and two side-coupled parallel metal rods is demonstrated. The simulation and experimental results clearly show that double Fano resonances appear in the transmission spectrum. In addition, the two Fano peaks can be independently tuned and single/double Fano peak switching can be achieved by changing one rod length or the gap distances between the rods and the disk. The modulation method is simple and effective, which greatly increases the tunability of the structure. The proposed asymmetric artificial plasmonic molecule can have applications in multi-channel optical switches, filters and biosensors. Moreover, the controllable plasmonic field intensity in the gap between the disk and rods also provides a new control means for plasmon-induced photocatalytic reactions and biosynthesis.

Abstract:A deep understanding of the optical properties of the chiral plexcitonic systems not only adds a new dimension to the exploration of the strong plasmon–exciton interaction but also provides a new method to design chiroptical devices. We develop a plexcitonic Born–Kuhn model to explore the strong coupling dynamics of the chiral hybrid nanostructures made of corner-stacked nanorod dimers and molecules from the chiroptical perspective. As a consequence of strong interaction between plasmons and excitons, double normal mode splittings/Rabi splittings and an anti-crossing phenomenon appear in circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. The character of dual plexciton (symmetric and anti-symmetric plexciton) and associated chiroptical properties have been demonstrated. The interplay between mirror symmetry breaking and plasmon–plasmon/plasmon–exciton interaction leads to an optimal configuration with the maximal chiroptical response. Moreover, chirality (of incident light) selective excitation of plexcitonic modes has been achieved by structural design. Finally, we verify our theory experimentally by synthesizing chiral plasmonic nanodimers and coating these structures with J-aggregate dye molecules.

Abstract:Plasmonic nanostructures have been widely employed to enhance the chiral light-matter interactions for chirality sensing owing to their intriguing optical properties. However, a quantitative understanding of the correlation between enhanced molecular chirality and plasmonic properties in plasmonic nanoparticle-molecule complexes remains a challenge yet to be addressed. Here we demonstrate the complex interactions between Ag nanoparticles and biomolecules that generate distinct plasmonic circular dichroism signals ranging from UV to visible wavelengths. By deliberately changing the surface coverage of chiral molecules, the geometry of Ag nanoparticles, and the aggregation states of the complexes, three distinct underlying mechanisms were found to be intertwined and hybridized for enhancing circular dichroism signals. We further employed the chiral plasmonic nano-particle-molecule complexes to quantify the enantiomeric purity of cysteine and explore their possible applications in other chiral molecules. The insights gained from this work shed light on the underlying mechanisms dictating the enhanced circular dichroism signals of chiral plasmonic nanoparticle-molecule complexes.

Chiral Plasmonics and Enhanced Chiral Light-Matter Interactions

Abstract:Chirality, which describes the broken mirror symmetry in geometric structures, exists macroscopically in our daily life as well as microscopically down to molecular levels. Correspondingly, chiral molecules interact differently with circularly polarized light exhibiting opposite handedness (left-handed and right-handed). However, the interaction between chiral molecules and chiral light is very weak. In contrast, artificial chiral plasmonic structures can generate “super-chiral” plasmonic near-field, leading to enhanced chiral light-matter (or chiroptical) interactions. The “super-chiral” near-field presents different amplitude and phase under opposite handedness incidence, which can be utilized to engineer linear and nonlinear chiroptical interactions. Specifically, in the interaction between quantum emitters and chiral plasmonic structures, the chiral hot spots can favour the emission with a specific handedness. This article reviews the state-of-the-art research on the design, fabrication and chiroptical response of different chiral plasmonic nanostructures or metasurfaces. This review also discusses enhanced chiral light-matter interactions that are essential for applications like chirality sensing, chiral selective light emitting and harvesting. In the final part, the review ends with a perspective on future directions of chiral plasmonics.
Enhanced Optical Chirality through Locally Excited Surface Plasmon Polaritons

Abstract:Plasmonic nanostructures provide unique opportunities to improve the detection limits of chiroptical spectroscopies by enhancing chiral light–matter interactions. The most significant of such interaction occur in ultraviolet (UV) range of the electromagnetic spectrum that remains challenging to access by conventional localized plasmon resonance based sensors. Although surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on noble metal films can sustain resonances in the desired spectral range, their transverse magnetic nature has been an obstacle for enhancing chiroptical effects. Here we demonstrate, both analytically and numerically, that SPPs excited by near-field sources can exhibit rich and nontrivial chiral characteristics. In particular, we show that the excitation of SPPs by a chiral source not only results in a locally enhanced optical chirality but also achieves manifold enhancement of net optical chirality. Our finding that SPPs facilitate a plasmonic enhancement of optical chirality in the UV part of the spectrum is of great interest in chiral biosensing.

Abstract:Arrays and ensembles of chiral nanostructures have potential applications in the field of enantioselective sensors, metamaterials, and metasurfaces. In particular, chiral nanostructures fabricated through chemical and bottom-up approaches have attracted much attention from the viewpoint of cost and scalability, but the heterogeneity of the unit nanostructure constituting the array or ensemble often deteriorates its chiroptical responses. Here, we report that their deteriorated responses can be recovered or even enhanced further by interparticle plasmon coupling. We employed chiral silver (Ag) hexamers as models for electromagnetic simulations and investigated the effect of their parameters, such as interparticle spacing, chiral purity, and enantiomeric excess, on their g-factor, which is an index for chiroptical responses. The maximum value of g-factor (gmax) of the Ag hexamer surpasses that of the chiral monomer and augments with decreasing interparticle spacing. This enhancement in g-factor is observed even when chiral purity and enantiomeric excess are less than 100%, showing the potent role of plasmon coupling in amplifying chiroptical responses. Furthermore, our research highlights the amplification of the effect of plasmon coupling on the gmax value of infinite periodic chiral nanostructures. These results corroborate the potential of plasmon coupling to improve chiroptical responses by precisely controlling the interparticle spacing of chiral plasmonic nanostructures, thus mitigating the loss of g-factor caused by low purity and enantiomeric excess of the nanostructures fabricated by chemical and bottom-up approaches.
