Abstract:Two-dimensional boron (borophene) is featured by its structural polymorphs and distinct in-plane anisotropy, opening opportunities to achieve tailored electronic properties by intermixing different phases. Here, using scanning tunneling spectroscopy combined with first-principles calculations, delocalized one-dimensional nearly free electron states (NFE) in the (2,3) or \b{eta}12 borophene sheet on the Ag(111) surface were observed. The NFE states emerge from a line defect in the borophene, manifested as a structural unit of the (2,2) or \c{hi}3 sheet, which creates an in-plane potential well that shifts the states toward the Fermi level. The NFE states are held in the 2D plane of borophene, rather than in the vacuum region as observed in other nanostructures. Furthermore the borophene can provide a rare prototype to further study novel NFE behaviors, which may have potential applications on transport or field emission nanodevices based on boron.

Insight into Two-Dimensional Borophene: Five-Center Bond and Phonon-Mediated Superconductivity

Abstract:We report a previously unknown monolayer borophene allotrope and we call it super-B with a flat structure based on the ab initio calculations. It has good thermal, dynamical, and mechanical stability compared with many other typical borophenes. We find that super-B has a fascinating chemical bond environment consisting of standard sp, sp2 hybridizations, and delocalized five-center three-electron $\pi$ bond, called $\pi$(5c-3e). This particular electronic structure plays a pivotal role in stabilizing the super-B chemically. By extra doping, super-B can be transformed into a Dirac material from pristine metal. Like graphene, it can also sustain tensile strain smaller than 24%, indicating superior flexibility. Moreover, due to the small atomic mass and large density of states at the Fermi level, super-B has the highest critical temperature Tc of 25.3 K in single-element superconductors at ambient conditions. We attribute this high Tc of super-B to the giant anharmonicity of two linear acoustic phonon branches and an unusually low optic phonon mode. These predictions provide new insight into the chemical nature of low dimensional boron nanostructures and highlight the potential applications of designing flexible devices and high Tc superconductors.

Realization of Regular‐Mixed Quasi‐1D Borophene Chains with Long‐Range Order

Abstract:The polymorphism of borophene makes it a promising system to realize tunable physical or chemical properties. Various pure borophene phases consisting of quasi‐1D boron chains with different widths have been commonly obtained in experimental studies. Here, it is shown that, due to a substrate mediation effect, artificial long‐range ordered phases of borophene consisting of different combinations of boron chains seamlessly joined together can be achieved on Ag(100). Scanning tunneling microscopy measurements and theoretical calculations reveal that mixed‐chain phases are more stable than the pure phase, and interact only weakly with the substrate. The mixed‐chain phases with various proportions of different chains can be well separated based on the crystal direction of the substrate. The successful growth of mixed‐chain phases is expected to deepen the impact of substrate tailored synthesis of borophene.

Abstract:As a neighbor of carbon in the periodic table, boron exhibits versatile structural and electronic configurations, with its allotropes predicted to possess intriguing structures and properties. Since the experimental realization of two‐dimensional (2D) boron sheets (borophene) on Ag(111) substrates in 2015, the experimental study of the realization and characteristics of borophene has drawn increasing interest. In this review, we summarize the synthesis and properties of borophene, which are mainly based on experimental results. First, the synthesis of borophene on different substrates, as well as borophane and bilayer borophene, featuring unique phases and properties, are discussed. Next, the chemistry of borophene, such as oxidation, hydrogenation, and its integration into heterostructures with other materials, is summarized. We also mention a few works focused on the physical properties of borophene, specifically its electronic properties. Lastly, the brief outlook addresses challenges toward practical applications of borophene and possible solutions.

Abstract:As the nearest-neighbour element to carbon, boron is theoretically predicted to have a planar two-dimensional form, named borophene, with novel properties, such as Dirac fermions and superconductivity. Several polymorphs of monolayer borophene have been grown on metal surfaces, yet thicker bilayer and few-layer nanosheets remain elusive. Here we report the synthesis of large-size, single-crystalline bilayer borophene on the Cu(111) surface by molecular beam epitaxy. Combining scanning tunnelling microscopy and first-principles calculations, we show that bilayer borophene consists of two stacked monolayers that are held together by covalent interlayer boron–boron bonding, and each monolayer has β12-like structures with zigzag rows. The formation of a bilayer is associated with a large transfer and redistribution of charge in the first boron layer on Cu(111), which provides additional electrons for the bonding of additional boron atoms, enabling the growth of the second layer. The bilayer borophene is shown to possess metallic character, and be less prone to being oxidized than its monolayer counterparts.

Abstract:In this Letter, we study the structural, electronic and elastic properties of single-layer striped borophene stacked on top of single-layer graphene. Through DFT calculation, we show that both the properties of striped borophene and graphene are not fully preserved in the novel heterostructure which obviously depend on the nature of the chemical bond between the layers. The obtained phonon spectrum confirms the stability of this compound. The divergence of branches in the band structure appears below the Fermi level in the K point in the first Brillouin zone. Moreover, this heterostructure possesses excellent elastic properties and can be considered for use in the field of 2D acousto- and optoelectronics.

Enhanced electron transport and self-similarity in quasiperiodic borophene nanoribbons with line defects

Abstract:Recent experiments have revealed multiple borophene phases of distinct lattice structures, suggesting that the unit cells of ν1/6 and ν1/5 boron sheets, namely α and β chains, serve as building blocks to assemble into novel borophene phases. Motivated by these experiments, we present a theoretical study of electron transport along two-terminal quasiperiodic borophene nanoribbons (BNRs), with the arrangement of the α and β chains following the generalized Fibonacci sequence. Our results indicate that the energy spectrum of these quasiperiodic BNRs is multifractal and characterized by numerous transmission peaks. In contrast to the Fibonacci model that all the electronic states should be critical, both delocalized and critical states appear in the quasiperiodic BNRs, where the averaged resistance saturates at the inverse of one conductance quantum for the delocalized states in the large length limit and contrarily exhibits a power-law dependence on the nanoribbon length for the critical states. Besides, the self-similarity is observed from the transmission spectrum, where the conductance curves overlap at different energy regions of two quasiperiodic BNRs of different Fibonacci indices and the resistance curves are analogous to each other at different energy scales of a single quasiperiodic BNR. These results complement previous studies on quasiperiodic systems where the multifractal energy spectrum and the self-similarity are observed by generating quasiperiodic potential energies, suggesting that borophene may provide an intriguing platform for understanding the structure-property relationships and exploring the physical properties of quasiperiodic systems.

Abstract:Borophene, a 2D allotrope of boron and the lightest elemental Dirac material, is the latest very promising 2D material owing to its unique structural and electronic characteristics of the X3 and β12 phases. The high atomic density on ridgelines of the β12 phase of borophene provides a substantial orbital overlap, which leads to an excellent electron density in the conduction level and thus to a highly metallic behavior. These unique structural characteristics and electronic properties of borophene attract significant scientific interest. Herein, approaches for crystal growth/synthesis of these unique nanostructures and their potential technological applications are discussed. Various substrate‐supported ultrahigh‐vacuum growth techniques for borophene, such as molecular beam epitaxy, atomic layer deposition, and chemical vapor deposition, along with their challenges, are also summarized. The sonochemical exfoliation and modified Hummer's technique for the synthesis of free‐standing borophene are also discussed. Solution‐phase exfoliation seems to address the scalability issues and expands the applications of these unique materials to various fields, including renewable energy devices and ultrafast sensors. Furthermore, the electronic, optical, thermal, and elastic properties of borophene are thoroughly discussed and are compared with those of graphene and its "cousins." Numerous frontline applications are envisaged and an outlook is presented.

Bilayer Kagome Borophene with Multiple van Hove Singularities

Abstract:The appearance of van Hove singularities near the Fermi level leads to prominent phenomena, including superconductivity, charge density wave, and ferromagnetism. Here a bilayer Kagome lattice with multiple van Hove singularities is designed and a novel borophene with such lattice (BK-borophene) is proposed by the first-principles calculations. BK-borophene, which is formed via three-center two-electron (3c-2e) sigma-type bonds, is predicted to be energetically, dynamically, thermodynamically, and mechanically stable. The electronic structure hosts both conventional and high-order van Hove singularities in one band. The conventional van Hove singularity resulting from the horse saddle is 0.065 eV lower than the Fermi level, while the high-order one resulting from the monkey saddle is 0.385 eV below the Fermi level. Both the singularities lead to the divergence of electronic density of states. Besides, the high-order singularity is just intersected to a Dirac-like cone, where the Fermi velocity can reach 1340000 m/s. The interaction between the two Kagome lattices is critical for the appearance of high-order van Hove singularities. The novel bilayer Kagome borophene with rich and intriguing electronic structure offers an unprecedented platform for studying correlation phenomena in quantum material systems and beyond.

Abstract:Borophene, a theoretically proposed two-dimensional (2D) boron allotrope1–3, has attracted much attention4,5 as a candidate material platform for high-speed, transparent and flexible electronics6–9. It was recently synthesized, on Ag(111) substrates10,11, and studied by tunnelling and electron spectroscopy12. However, the exact crystal structure is still controversial, the nanometre-size single-crystal domains produced so far are too small for device fabrication and the structural tunability via substrate-dependent epitaxy is yet to be proven. We report on the synthesis of borophene monitored in situ by low-energy electron microscopy, diffraction and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and modelled by ab initio theory. We resolved the crystal structure and phase diagram of borophene on Ag(111), but found that the domains remain nanoscale for all growth conditions. However, by growing borophene on Cu(111) surfaces, we obtained large single-crystal domains, up to 100 μm2 in size. The crystal structure is a novel triangular network with a concentration of hexagonal vacancies of η = 1/5. Our experimental data, together with first principles calculations, indicate charge-transfer coupling to the substrate without significant covalent bonding. Our work sets the stage for fabricating borophene-based devices and substantiates the idea of borophene as a model for development of artificial 2D materials.

Structural Evolution of Boron Clusters on Ag(111) Surfaces – From Atomic Chains to Triangular Sheets with Hexagonal Holes

Abstract:Unlike graphene and other 2D materials, borophene is 2D polymorphic with diverse hexagonal holes (HHs)‐triangles ratios and the concentrations of HHs are highly substrate dependent. Here, we systematically explored the evolution of boron cluster on Ag(111) surface, B N @Ag(111) (N=1~36), to understand the nucleation of 2D boron sheet on metal surface. Our calculation showed that, with the size increasing, the structures of most stable B N clusters undergo an evolution from compact triangular lattice, such as double‐chains or triple‐chains, to the ones with mixed triangular‐hexagonal lattices. The first single‐HH appears at N=12 and the first double‐HH appears at N=27. The stability of large B N clusters with mixed structures is derived from the charge transfer between triangular lattice and the HHs, as well as between the substrates and the B N clusters. Our results provide a deep understanding on the formation of small boron clusters in the initial nucleation stage of borophene growth.

Stability and Strength of Atomically Thin Borophene from First Principles Calculations

Abstract:A new two-dimensional (2D) material, borophene (2D boron sheet), has been grown successfully recently on single crystal Ag substrates by two parallel experiments [Mannix \textit{et al., Science}, 2015, \textbf{350}, 1513] [Feng \textit{et al., Nature Chemistry}, 2016, \textbf{advance online publication}]. Three main structures have been proposed ($\beta_{12}$, $\chi_3$ and striped borophene). However, the stability of three structures is still in debate. Using first principles calculations, we examine the dynamical, thermodynamical and mechanical stability of $\beta_{12}$, $\chi_3$ and striped borophene. Free-standing $\beta_{12}$ and $\chi_3$ borophene is dynamically, thermodynamically, and mechanically stable, while striped borophene is dynamically and thermodynamically unstable due to high stiffness along $a$ direction. The origin of high stiffness and high instability in striped borophene along $a$ direction can both be attributed to strong directional bonding. This work provides a benchmark for examining the relative stability of different structures of borophene.

Abstract:It has been widely accepted that planar boron structures, composed of triangular and hexagonal motifs are the most stable two-dimensional (2D) phases and likely precursors for boron nanostructures. Here we predict, based on an ab initio evolutionary structure search, a novel 2D boron structure with nonzero thickness, which is considerably, by $50\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{meV}/\mathrm{atom}$, lower in energy than the recently proposed $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-sheet structure and its analogues. In particular, this phase is identified for the first time to have a distorted Dirac cone, after graphene and silicene the third elemental material with massless Dirac fermions. The buckling and coupling between the two sublattices not only enhance the energetic stability, but also are the key factors for the emergence of the distorted Dirac cone.
Prediction of Nodal-Line Fermion and Phonon-Mediated Superconductivity in Bilayer Α-Borophene

Abstract:The electron deficiency of boron allows the formation of a variety of monolayer or few-layer two-dimensional structures (borophenes) with interesting physical properties. Recent experiments have also confirmed that interlayer covalent bonding makes the bilayer structure more stable than the monolayer. In this work based on α -borophene, we propose three free-stranding bilayer structures with dynamic stability. In these three metallic structures, the electronic band crossings around Fermi level form nodal lines. All these structures also exhibit strong electron-phonon couplings. The Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer superconducting critical temperature T c of the type-II structure went as high as 28.2 K, which was further improved to 32.0 K by the enhancement effect of Li adatom at the Debye frequency. However, no increase in critical temperature was observed in other Li-doping cases. Specifically, Li intercalation inside the bilayer causes a significant abrupt decrease in the critical temperature of type-I structure. Our results indicated that the bilayer borophene would be an ideal platform for the coexistence of topological electronic states and superconducting states.
Prediction of two stable freestanding borophanes: Structure, electronic properties, and superconductivity

Abstract:Borophene has several configurations and shows many unique properties, such as the Dirac point, the negative Poisson's ratio, inherent metallicity, but it is oxidized easily. Recently, ordered chemical modulation of β12 borophene grown on the Ag(111) substrate by hydrogenation was experimentally reported, and three configurations of β12 borophane were proposed by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy [ Science 371 , 1143 (2021)]. In this paper, using first-principles calculations, we study seven configurations of hydrogen atoms adsorbed on freestanding β12 borophene not only including the three adsorption structures in above literature, but also other four possible configurations with one or two hydrogen atoms adsorbed on it per unit cell. Among the seven configurations, we predict two stable β12 borophanes. They possess the dynamic stability and different anisotropic metallicity from pristine β12 borophene and show superconductivity. Based on the Eliashberg equation, the calculated electron-phonon coupling strength are about 0.82 and 0.52, and their superconducting transition temperature Tc are 20.51 and 5.90 K, respectively. Abstract:Since spin can be regarded as a dummy degree of freedom, light-element topological semimetals (TSMs) are expected to be a promising alternative for spin-orbit-coupling based TSMs, which usually contain costly and toxic heavy elements. Using first-principles calculations combined with a bottom-up assembly strategy, herein we identify an intriguing light-element TSM, termed 3D borophene, which can be obtained by stacking synthesized 2D triangular borophene along the perpendicular direction. Under the protection of mirror symmetry, the linear band crossings between B−pxz and py states in the vicinity of the Fermi energy form two Weyl nodal lines running across the Brillouin zone in the ky=0 plane. When the nodal lines are projected on the (010) surface, drumheadlike surface states and open Fermi arcs are observed, which provide vital evidence for experimental identification. Remarkably, by examining the defined slope index of the crossing bands in all possible k paths, we find that the nodal lines of 3D borophene are composed of type-II Weyl points due to the emergence of tilted Weyl cones. Our findings not only establish a lightweight Weyl-nodal-line semimetal, but also highlight a bottom-up assembly strategy for designing desirable TSMs from synthetic 2D materials.

Superhard and Superconducting Bilayer Borophene

Abstract:Two-dimensional superconductors, especially the covalent metals such as borophene, have received significant attention due to their new fundamental physics, as well as potential applications. Furthermore, the bilayer borophene has recently ignited interest due to its high stability and versatile properties. Here, the mechanical and superconducting properties of bilayer-δ6 borophene are explored by means of first-principles computations and anisotropic Migdal–Eliashberg analytics. We find that the coexistence of strong covalent bonds and delocalized metallic bonds endows this structure with remarkable mechanical properties (maximum 2D-Young's modulus of ~570 N/m) and superconductivity with a critical temperature of ~20 K. Moreover, the superconducting critical temperature of this structure can be further boosted to ~46 K by applied strain, which is the highest value known among all borophenes or two-dimensional elemental materials.

Abstract:Boron, the fifth element in the period table, exhibits diverse bonding patterns and interesting structures due to its electron deficiency.Unlike its neighbor carbon, closed-packed boron sheet with graphene-like honeycomb lattice is unstable so that planar boron clusters usually have interior vacancies and corrugated appearance.Delocalized multicenter bonding has an important role to stabilize the 2D structures, giving rise to the concept of σ, π, …multiple aromaticity.The experimental observation of the B 36 -cluster in 2014 established the viability of boron monolayer which was named as "borophene" by Wang and Li.Recently, studies on planar CoB 18 -and RhB 18 -clusters have suggested the possibilities of metal-doped borophenes (metallo-borophenes) with potentially tunable electronic, magnetic and optical properties.In this review, we summarize recent experimental and theoretical advances in 2D pure-boron and metaldoped boron clusters, as well as their implications for borophenes and metalloborophenes as novel new boron materials.
From Two- to Three-Dimensional van der Waals Layered Structures of Boron Crystals: An Ab Initio Study

Abstract:A remarkable recent advancement has been the successful synthesis of two-dimensional boron monolayers on metal substrates. However, although up to 16 possible bulk allotropes of boron have been reported, none of them possess van der Waals (vdW) layered structures. In this work, starting from the experimentally synthesized monolayer boron sheet (β12 borophene), we explored the possibility for forming vdW layered bulk boron. We found that two β12 borophene sheets cannot form a stable vdW bilayer structure, as covalent-like B–B bonds are formed between them because of the peculiar bonding. Interestingly, when the covalently bonded bilayer borophene sheets are stacked on top of each other, three-dimensional (3D) layered structures are constructed via vdW interlayer interactions, rather than covalent. The 3D vdW layered structures were found to be dynamically stable. The interlayer binding energy is about 20 meV/Å2, which is close to the weakly bound graphene layers in graphite (∼16 meV/Å2). Furthermore, the density functional theory predicted electronic band structure testifies that these vdW bulk boron crystals can behave as good conductors. The insights obtained from this work suggest an opportunity to discover new vdW layered structures of bulk boron, which is expected to be crucial to numerous applications ranging from microelectronic devices to energy storage devices.
