Abstract:The high voltage (4.7 V vs. Li+ /Li) spinel lithium nickel manganese oxide (LiNi0.5 Mn1.5 O4 , LNMO) is a promising candidate for the next-generation of lithium ion batteries due to its high energy density, low cost and environmental impact. However, poor cycling performance at high cutoff potentials limits its commercialization. Herein, hollow structured LNMO is synergistically paired with an ionic liquid electrolyte, 1M lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) in N-propyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (Pyr1,3 FSI) to achieve stable cycling performance and improved rate capability. The optimized cathode-electrolyte system exhibits extended cycling performance (>85% capacity retention after 300 cycles) and high rate performance (106.2mAhg–1 at 5C) even at an elevated temperature of 65 ◦C. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and spatially resolved x-ray fluorescence analyses confirm the formation of a robust, LiF-rich cathode electrolyte interphase. This study presents a comprehensive design strategy to improve the electrochemical performance of high-voltage cathode materials.
Melt Synthesis of Lithium Manganese Iron Phosphate: Part I. Composition, Physical Properties, Structural Analysis, and Charge/Discharge Cycling

Abstract:Melt synthesis is a fast and simple process to make dense LiMnyFe1-yPO4 (LMFP with 0 ≤ y ≤ 1) from all-dry, low-cost precursors with zero waste. This study characterizes melt LMFP materials with 0-100% Mn after particle size reduction by planetary milling and carbon coating with glucose. The melt LMFP samples show higher electrical conductivity at similar pellet density than LFP (0% Mn) and LMFP (79% Mn) reference samples made by traditional methods. The melt LMFP samples exhibit higher crystallinity than the reference samples and show no crystalline impurities. Their unit cell volume and crystallographic density scale with Mn content; the percentage of Fe and/or Mn in Li positions is below 1.5%, which is comparable to reference samples. Crystallite sizes of at least 100 to 175 nm are observed for melt LMFP, which is larger than the fine ~50 nm crystallites of reference LMFP. Melt LFP shows specific discharge capacity and cycling stability comparable to reference LFP, but the melt LMFP samples with 25-100% Mn shows worse performance than reference LMFP (79% Mn). Part two of this study will quantify the solid-state lithium diffusion coefficient in melt LMFP materials and correlate it to their electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Abstract LiMn 1‐y Fe y PO 4 (LMFP) is a significant and cost‐effective cathode material for Li‐ion batteries, with a higher working voltage than LiFePO 4 (LFP) and improved safety features compared to layered oxide cathodes. However, its commercial application faces challenges due to a need for a synthesis process to overcome the low Li‐ion diffusion kinetics and complex phase transitions. Herein, a solid‐state synthesis process using LFP and nano LiMn 0.7 Fe 0.3 PO 4 (MF73) is proposed. The larger LFP acts as a structural framework fused with nano‐MF73, preserving the morphology and high performance of LFP. These results demonstrate that the solid‐state reaction occurs quickly, even at a low sintering temperature of 500 °C, and completes at 700 °C. However, contrary to the expectations, the larger LFP particles disappeared and fused into the nano‐MF73 particles, revealing that Fe ions diffuse more easily than Mn ions in the olivine framework. This discovery provides valuable insights into understanding ion diffusion in LMFP. Notably, the obtained LMFP can still deliver an initial capacity of 142.3 mAh g −1 , and the phase separation during the electrochemical process is significantly suppressed, resulting in good cycling stability (91.1% capacity retention after 300 cycles). These findings offer a promising approach for synthesizing LMFP with improved performance and stability.

Abstract:Melt synthesis is a fast and simple process to make dense LiMnyFe1-yPO4 (LMFP with 0 ≤ y ≤ 1) from all-dry, low-cost precursors with zero waste. Part one of this study confirmed that highly crystalline and phase pure LMFP materials can be made by melt synthesis. This part shows that planetary milling can reduce the primary particle size of melt LMFP (0-75% Mn) to ~200 nm, which is smaller than the primary particles in commercial LFP reference material (0% Mn). However, further particle size reduction is needed to reach particle sizes below 70 nm observed in reference LMFP (79% Mn). Melt LFP shows almost identical specific capacity and charge/discharge voltage as reference LFP. Melt LMFP materials show a high voltage Mn plateau at ~4 V associated with the Mn2+/3+ redox, the length of which scales with Mn content. The Mn plateau raises the average discharge voltage of LMFP; hence a minimum specific discharge capacity between 160 mAh/g (0% Mn) and 145 mAh/g (80% Mn) is sufficient to match the volumetric energy density of LFP. The Atlung Method for Intercalant Diffusion provides the lithium diffusion coefficient in LFP and LMFP made by the melt synthesis method.

Abstract:The cubic phase LiMn 2 O 4 precursors are prepared by high-temperature calcinations (1003 K) of LiOH⋅H 2 O and MnO 2 mixture with Li/Mn molar ratio = 0.55. The Li 4 Mn 5 O 12 precursors are synthesized via low-temperature solid-phase reaction (673 K) of LiNO 3 and MnO 2 mixture with Li/Mn molar ratio = 1.0. The ion-sieves counterparts (named SMO-H and SMO-L, respectively) are obtained by the acid treatment of Li-Mn-O precursors. The structure, chemical stability, morphology, ion-exchange property and mechanism of Li-Mn-O precursors and MnO 2 ion-sieve were systematically examined via X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected-area electron diffraction (SAED), Infrared Spectroscopy (IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and lithium ion selective adsorption measurements. The result shows the more compact Mn-O lattice makes the Li 4 Mn 5 O 12 spinel more stable after the Li + is extracted. The results of IR and XPS show adsorption process of SMO-H exists ion-exchange between the Li + and protons, and redox reaction, but only exists ion-exchange between the Li + and protons in SMO-L. Agglomeration is well-improved by low calcination temperature and the morphology of the Li 4 Mn 5 O 12 precursor and final MnO 2 ion-sieve are effectively controlled within low-dimensional structure. The maximum pH titration capacity of SMO-L for Li + is 6.76 mmol⋅g −1 , but only 3.47 mmol⋅g −1 for SMO-H. The ion-sieve obtained from Li 4 Mn 5 O 12 precursor is promising in the lithium extraction from brine or seawater.

Abstract:Lithium-rich silicides (Li15Si4), formed during the electrochemical lithiation of silicon, show high reactivity with electrolyte components that contribute to capacity decay, formal lithium loss, and low coulombic efficiency. Recently, the reactivity of lithium silicides was found to be suppressed by substituting a multivalent cation (i.e. Mg, Ca) for lithium that results in the room-temperature formation of a ternary Li-M-Si phase. In this study, we explored a range of multivalent electrolyte salt additives (M=Ni, Cu, La, Ce, Sr, Ba, and Ca-Mg mixed salt) in a lithium-ion cell configuration and identified a room-temperature electrochemical route to the formation of new ternary and quaternary lithium silicides. Using this method, both nickel and copper salts were found to plate onto the silicon electrode surface upon lithiation. Based on refined synchrotron X-ray diffraction data, multivalent cations with an ionic radius similar to Na (~1.03 Å) or smaller can be inserted electrochemically into a formally cation-deficient Li15Si4 host lattice to form new ternary (or quartenary) phases. The electrochemical synthesis of a new quaternary Li-M-M'-Si phase represents a facile route to preparing and scaling materials isostructural to the Heusler and electron-precise Li14MgSi4 phase that results in enhanced cycling and calendar life performance.

Metal‐Organic Coordination Enhanced Metallopolymer Electrolytes for Wide‐Temperature Solid‐State Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:The practical application of polymer electrolytes is seriously hindered by the inferior Li+ ionic conductivity, low Li+ transference number (tLi+), and poor interfacial stability. Herein, a structurally novel metallopolymer is designed and synthesized by exploiting a molybdenum (Mo) paddle‐wheel complex as a tetratopic linker to bridge organic and inorganic moieties at molecular level. The prepared metallopolymer possesses combined merits of outstanding mechanical and thermal stability, as well as a low glass transition temperature (Tg < –50 °C). Based on this metallopolymer, an advanced metal‐organic coordination enhanced metallopolymer electrolyte (MPE) is developed for constructing high‐performance solid‐state lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Due to the unsaturated coordination of Mo atoms, the uniformly distributed Mo‐polyoxometalates (Mo‐POMs) in metallopolymer skeleton can effectively bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide anions (FSI‐) and promote the dissociation of Li salts. Moreover, dynamic metal‐organic coordination bonds endow the MPE with re‐processability and self‐healing, enabling it to accommodate electrode volume changes and maintain good interfacial contact. Consequently, the MPE achieves a competitive ionic conductivity of 0.712 mS cm‐1 (25 °C), a high tLi+ (0.625), and a wide electrochemical stability window (> 5.0 V). This study presents a unique MPE design based on metal‐organic coordination enhanced strategy, providing a promising solution for developing wide‐temperature solid‐state LMBs.
LiMPO4 and Derived NaMPO4 (M = Mn, Fe, Mg) with Excellent Electrochemical Properties for Lithium/sodium Ion Batteries

Abstract:A simple two-step solid-state-reaction process is adopted to synthesize carbon-coated Mg-doped Li(Mn,Fe)PO4 (LMMFP) nano-particles. As positive electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the carbon-coated LMMFP samples show excellent electrochemical properties in a temperature range from -20 to 55 degrees C. For example, LiMn0.48Fe0.5Mg0.02PO4 can deliver a capacity of 146.2 mAh g(-1) at 3C rate and retain 95.3% after 450 cycles at 25 degrees C. It can also deliver 160.7 mAh g(-1) at 1C and retain 97.7% after 100 cycles at 55 degrees C. Even at 20 degrees C, it gives a capacity of 109.5 mAh g-1 with an average discharge voltage of 3.37 Vat 0.2C. In Na/LMMFP cells, the LMMFP electrodes can be electrochemically converted into Mg-doped Na(Mn,Fe)PO4 (NMMFP) electrodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Ex-situ XRD proves that the derived NMMFP have an olivine-type structure and can reversibly extract and insert sodium ions. For example, NaMn0.48Fe0.5Mg0.02PO4 can deliver a reversible specific capacity of 126.9 mAh g(-1) after 30 cycles at 0.1C with an average discharge voltage of 3.1 V. A novel mechanochemical synthesis of LiMnPO4 with manganese violet and ammonium manganese phosphate as precursors

Abstract:Olivine lithium manganese phosphate was synthesized by a mechanochemical method. Inorganic cathode materials can be divided into three kinds of lithium metal oxide layered, spinel oxide and olivine metal phosphate. One important of the cathode materials used in Li-ion cells is LiMnPO4. In this paper two different precursors, manganese violet and ammonium manganese phosphate proposed as reactant in the synthesis of LiMnPO4 nanostructures. Reaction between NH4MnP2O7 and Li2CO3 takes placed in solid state at room temperature. In this mechanochemical process, a solid acid and base reaction occurred between ammonium and carbonate ions. In addition, MnIII is unstable oxidation state and convert to crystalline β-MnO2, Li2MnP2O7 and NH4H2PO4 in the disproportionation reaction. Results showed that mechanochemical reaction between NH4MnP2O7 with Li2CO3 as precursors lead to concurrent redox and acid-base reaction. As a result, we observed there is a tendency for manganese violet to disproportionation into MnO2 and manganese pyrophosphate salt in a solid-state reaction. Finally, a redox reaction between β-MnO2 and Li2MnP2O7 in pyrolysis reaction under inert atmosphere give LiMnPO4. In the other hand in the mechanochemical reaction between NH4MnPO4 and Li2CO3, only acid and base reaction occurred and the NH4 + ions were replaced with Li+ ions and amorphous LiMnPO4 was prepared. The amorphous LiMnPO4 convert to crystalline LiMnPO4 by annealing the powder under inert atmosphere. The chemical changes in formation of LiMnPO4 compound was characterized by X-Ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersion x-ray analyses (EDX). FTIR spectra showed that the NH4 + ions were replaced with Li+ ions. X-ray diffraction show that by variation of precursor from manganese violet to ammonium manganese phosphate in the mechanochemical reaction the crystalline pattern changes to amorphous and also the reaction pathway was changed. The SEM images of LiMnPO4 nanoparticles that obtained by two precursors exhibit squamous morphologies with well-defined grain boundaries and nonuniform particle size distributions. The particle size distributions of crystalline LiMnPO4 obtained by NH4MnP2O7 and NH4MnPO4 were found in the region 60–260 and 20–130 nm respectively.

Abstract:Mesocrystals of Li-Mn-O compounds, such as LiMn2O4, Li2MnO3, and LiMnO2-Li2MnO3, consisting of oriented nanoscale units were selectively produced under hydrothermal conditions from biomimetically prepared MnCO3 mesocrystals. Topotactic transformation through the intermediate phase of Mn5O8 inheriting a hierarchical structure of the MnCO3 precursor was essential for the formation of the mesocrystal compounds. The crystal phases were successfully controlled by varying the conditions for the hydrothermal reactions. The Li-Mn-O mesocrystals have considerable potential as cathodes of Li-ion batteries.
Monodisperse Li1.2mn0.6ni0.2o2 Microspheres with Enhanced Lithium Storage Capability

Abstract:Monodisperse spherical Mn0.75Ni0.25(OH)(2) precursors built up from plate-like primary particles have been successfully synthesized by the control of pH values during a co-precipitation reaction. The size of spherical particles, namely the secondary particles, is observed to decrease with increasing pH value from 9.0 to 11.0, and is accompanied by a series of shape changes of the primary particles from close-packed plates to well-exposed nanoplates, and then to nanoparticles. Further lithiation of these hydroxide precursors produces the final lithium-rich layered Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2 cathode materials without destroying the morphology of the precursors. Electrochemical measurements show that the spherical cathode material assembled from well-exposed nanoplates exhibits superior rate capability and good cyclability compared to other electrode materials, which can be attributed to its uniform particle size and the favorable shape which facilitates the diffusion of lithium ions. Through the control of the sample morphologies, we provide a simple and effective way to enhance the lithium storage capability of lithium-rich layered oxide cathode materials for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Thermotropic liquid‐crystalline (LC) electrolytes for lithium‐ion batteries are developed for the first time. A rod‐like LC molecule having a cyclic carbonate moiety is used to form self‐assembled two‐dimensional ion‐conductive pathways with lithium salts. Electrochemical and thermal stability, and efficient ionic conduction is achieved for the liquid crystal. The mixture of the carbonate derivative and lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide is successfully applied as an electrolyte in lithium‐ion batteries. Reversible charge–discharge for both positive and negative electrodes is observed for the lithium‐ion batteries composed of the LC electrolyte.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have been recognized as high-energy storage alternatives; however, problematic surface reactions due to dendritic Li growth are major obstacles to their widespread utilization. Herein, a 3-mercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid sodium salt (MPS) with asymmetrically functionalized thiol and sulfonate groups as polarizable interface-restructuring molecules is proposed to achieve rapid and longer-operating LMBs. Under a harsh condition of 5 mA cm-2, Li-Li symmetric cells employing MPS can be cycled over 1200 cycles, outperforming those employing other molecules symmetrically functionalized by thiol or sulfonate groups. The improved performance of the Li|V2O5 full cell is demonstrated by introducing MPS additives. MPS additives offer advantages by flattening the surface, reconfiguring Li nucleation and growth along the stable (110) plane, and forming a durable and conductive solid-electrolyte interface layer (SEI). This study suggests an effective way to develop a new class of electrolyte additives for LMBs by controlling engineering factors, such as functional groups and polarizable properties.

Abstract:The olivine-structured LiMPO4 (M=Fe, Mn, Co and Ni), particularly LiFePO4, is one of the most viable and promising candidates of cathode material for the sustainable lithium ion batteries (LIBs) as reversible electrochemical energy storage (EES) devices. Usually, LiMPO4 can be synthesized via solid phase thermal (SPT) route, which is considered as a crucial process for improving the crystallinity of LiMPO4. However, in the conventional SPT process, e.g., common calcination, energy is generally transferred through heat convection, heat conduction and heat radiation from the surfaces to inners, which entail prolonged exposure to high calcination temperature (e.g. 700°C for 12h). Different from the heat treatment route of calcinaiton, microwave irradiation can provide “inert and instant heating” of LiMPO4 precursors and synthesize even crystallite LiMPO4 cathode materials. This microwave-assisted SPT (MW-SPT) method is not only energy- and time-saving (e.g., 700W, 4min), but also exhibits superiority in optimizing physical characters, improving Li-ion diffusion kinetics and enhancing high rate performance. Furthermore, the microwave-assisted liquid phase thermal (MW-LPT) method has been also employed to prepare LiMPO4 cathode materials. Recently, both MW-SPT and MW-LPT routes have led to increased interest in the development of LiMPO4 cathode materials and processing capabilities to enable high electrochemical performance. In this review, we focus on the LiMPO4 cathode materials synthesized by microwave irradiation assisted synthesis (MIAS) route, which conclude mainly two parts, MW-SPT and MW-LPT routes. The major goal is to highlight the reaction mechanism and current developments of LiMPO4 synthesized via MW-SPT and MW-LPT methods. The structural, morphological and electrochemical performance of LiMPO4 cathode materials prepared by MIAS has also been discussed.

Ultrafast One‐Step Synthesis of Garnet‐Type Solid Electrolytes With Modified Surface and Microstructure for Solid‐State Lithium‐Metal Batteries

Abstract:Densified LLZTO electrolytes are synthesized using Li2O and Li2ZrO3 precursors via a 60‐second Joule heat‐assisted process. A Sn‐SnF2 coating, produced by melt‐quenching, forms a Li‐Sn alloy and LiF interlayer in situ, achieving near‐zero interfacial resistance and a critical current density of 23 mA cm–2. Solid‐state batteries with modified LLZTO and NMC811 cathodes retain 88.63% capacity after 3000 cycles. Garnet‐type Li6.5La3Zr1.5Ta0.5O12 (LLZTO) solid electrolytes provide the necessary electrochemical stability and ionic conductivity for solid‐state lithium‐metal batteries (SSLMBs). However, their wider application is hindered by their high interfacial resistance with electrodes and a lengthy synthesis process. This study presents the synthesis of densified LLZTO electrolytes using unconventional Li2O and Li2ZrO3 precursors through an ultrafast (≈60 s) Joule heat‐assisted synthesis approach in a single‐step process. The lower sintering temperature of Li2ZrO3 compared to traditional ZrO2 precursor yields LLZTO with larger grains, resulting in enhanced Li+ conductivity (7.0 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 25 °C), reduced electronic conductivity (1.7 × 10−10 S cm−1), and higher density (94.2%). Applying a 52–80 nm Sn:SnF2 coating on the LLZTO surface using a melt‐quenching approach produces a uniform interlayer that chemically converts to Li‐Sn alloy and LiF upon contact with lithium, resulting in a near‐zero interfacial resistance and a critical current density of 4.2 mA cm−2 at 25 °C. The SSLMBs, incorporating Sn:SnF2‐coated LLZTO electrolyte with NMC811 cathode, demonstrate remarkable initial capacity (181.1 mAh g−1) and cycle performance (88.63% capacity retention at 3000th cycle). The results indicate that this approach has the potential to advance the commercial fabrication technology for high‐performance solid electrolytes for SSLMBs.

Electrochemical Performance and in Situ Phase Transition Analysis of Iron-Doped Lithium Manganese Phosphate

Abstract:Olivine LiMnPO(4 )cathode materials are favored for their low cost and higher operating voltage compared to those of LiFePO4. However, significant volume changes due to the Jahn-Teller effect of Mn3+, slow lithium-ion diffusion, and poor electronic conductivity limit their structural stability and electrochemical performance. Through a straightforward solid-state reaction, LiMnxFe1-xPO4/C (x = 0.7, 0.8, 0.9) cathode materials were synthesized using FePO42H(2)O and MnPO4H2O precursors at varying calcination temperatures. Optimal results were obtained at 650 degrees C, leading to further investigation to identify the most suitable Mn/Fe ratio. LiMn0.7Fe0.3PO4/C exhibited a higher initial discharge capacity of 149.1 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C compared to LiMn0.7Fe0.3PO4/C (146.9 mAh g(-1)) and LiMn0.9Fe0.1PO4/C (125.6 mAh g(-1)), and a superior capacity retention of 96.1% after 160 cycles. Additionally, it showed improved rate capability with average discharge capacities of 138.7, 131.1, and 110.6 mAh g(-1) at 0.2, 0.5, and 1 C rates, respectively. Furthermore, the phase transitions of LiMn0.7Fe0.3PO4/C cathodes during (de)lithiation were monitored via operando XRD. During charging, the orthorhombic LiMn0.7Fe0.3PO4 transitioned to orthorhombic Mn0.7Fe0.3PO4, maintaining the same space group Pmnb. Simultaneously, a solid-solution reaction within LixMn0.7Fe0.3PO4 and a two-phase reaction between LixMn0.7Fe0.3PO4 and Mn0.7Fe0.3PO4 were observed to occur successively.
Synthesis and adsorption properties of metal oxide-coated lithium ion-sieve from salt lake brine

Abstract:The Mn-based Li1.6Mn1.6O4 ion sieve is among the most effective lithium adsorbents due to its high lithium-ion adsorption capacity and selectivity for Li-ions. However, the inherent disadvantages of manganese dissolution and low structural stability prevent its industrial application. In this study, a series of Li1.6Mn1.6O4@R were synthesized by the low temperature solid phase hydrothermal method that exhibit highly anti-dissolution properties for the lithium adsorption from brine water. The LMO-L, LMO-LM, and LMO-M adsorbents show great adsorption capacities of 46.0 mg g−1, 43.0 mg g−1, and 38.0 mg g−1 compared to the 42.3 mg g−1 for the pristine adsorbent. After 20 cycles the dissolution loss of Mn was 0.06 % of LMO-L adsorbents. This improvement in adsorption properties is attributed to the stabilized layered structure due to the evolution of oxygen during the coating reaction, and the inhibition of the interfacial side reactions between the solution and the adsorbent by metal oxide coating. X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis indicate the formation of Li2MnO3 on the material surface, which can increase tetravalent manganese on the surface. Furthermore, our work may provide new insights for the design of efficient Mn-based adsorbents with high stability for water treatment applications.

Abstract:Mesoporous Li3Fe2(PO4)(3) battery electrode materials (see Figure) with a discharge capacity of 140 mAh g(-1) at 20 mA g(-1) self-assemble under aqueous conditions using a cationic surfactant as the template. Mossbauer spectroscopy results are characteristic of Fe3+ ions in oxides, while the interaction of lithium with Fe and O in mesoporous Li3Fe2(PO4)(3) is verified by Li-7 NMR. This synthetic strategy may be applied to the production of other multi-metal phosphate ordered mesoporous structures.

Abstract:The lithium- and manganese-rich layered oxide (LMR) holds great promise as a cathode material for lithium-ion battery (LIB) applications due to its high capacity, high voltage and low cost. Unfortunately, its poor initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) and unstable electrode/electrolyte interface with continuous growth of the solid electrolyte interphase leads to high impedance and large overpotential. These effects cause severe capacity loss and safety issues. In this work, we have developed a novel approach to fabricate a stable LMR cathode with a uniform thin layer of aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ) coated on the surface of the LMR particles. This synthesis approach uses the microemulsion method that is environment-friendly, cost-effective and can be easily scaled. Typically, an 8-nm layer of Al 2 O 3 is shown to be effective in stabilizing the electrode/electrolyte interface (enhanced ICE to 82.0% and moderate impedance increase over 200 cycles). Moreover, the phase transformation from layered to spinel is inhibited (96.3% average voltage retention) and thermal stability of the structure is significantly increased (heat release reduced by 72.4%). This study opens up a new avenue to address interface issues in LIB cathodes and prompts the practical applications of high capacity and voltage materials for high energy density batteries.
