Abstract:Abstract Polyethylene oxide (PEO)‐based polymer solid electrolytes (PSE) have been pursued for the next‐generation extremely safe and high‐energy‐density lithium metal batteries due to their exceptional flexibility, manufacturability, and lightweight nature. However, the practical application of PEO‐PSE has been hindered by low ionic conductivity, limited lithium‐ion transfer number ( t Li+ ), and inferior stability with lithium metal. Herein, an ultrathin composite solid‐state electrolyte (CSSE) film with a thickness of 20 μm, incorporating uniformly dispersed two‐dimensional fluorinated boron nitride (F‐BN) nanosheet fillers (F‐BN CSSE) is fabricated via a solution‐casting process. The integration of F‐BN effectively reduces the crystallinity of the PEO polymer matrix, creating additional channels that facilitate lithium‐ion transport. Moreover, the presence of F‐BN promotes an inorganic phase‐dominated electrolyte interface film dominated by LiF, Li 2 O, and Li 3 N on the lithium anode surface, greatly enhancing the stability of the electrode‐electrolyte interface. Consequently, the F‐BN CSSE exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 0.11 mS cm −1 at 30°C, high t Li+ of 0.56, and large electrochemical window of 4.78 V, and demonstrates stable lithium plating/striping behavior with a voltage of 20 mV for 640 h, effectively mitigating the formation of lithium dendrites. When coupled with LiFePO 4 , the as‐assembled LiFePO 4 |F‐BN CSSE|Li solid‐state battery achieves a high capacity of 142 mAh g −1 with an impressive retention rate of 82.4% after 500 cycles at 5 C. Furthermore, even at an ultrahigh rate of 50 C, a capacity of 37 mAh g −1 is achieved. This study provides a novel and reliable strategy for the design of advanced solid‐state electrolytes for high‐rate and long‐life lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Composite polymer electrolytes using polyethylene oxide (PEO) are highly appealing by virtue of the fine electrochemical stability, inexpensiveness, and easy fabrication. However, their practical application is currently hindered by the insufficient room-temperature ionic conductivity. Herein, nickel-based ultrathin metal-organic framework nanosheets (NMS) are first introduced as a novel 2D filler into the PEO matrix. The introduction of NMS with a high aspect ratio effectively improves the amorphous region proportion of PEO and thus enhances the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte by 1 order of magnitude. In addition, the Lewis acid-base interactions between the surface-coordinated unsaturated Ni atoms in NMS and the anions of lithium salt could promote the dissociation of lithium salt. Hence, the composite electrolyte with NMS achieves a high Li+ transference value of 0.378. Along with the unique nanostructure of NMS, this NMS composite electrolyte also suppresses Li dendrite growth during cycling. As a result, the assembled all-solid-state Li/LiFePO4 battery demonstrates a high reversible capacity of 130 mA h g-1 at 0.1 C and 30 °C for 50 cycles.

Abstract:All solid-state lithium batteries (ASS-LBs) with polymer-based solid electrolytes are a prospective contender for the next-generation batteries because of their high energy density, flexibility, and safety. Among all-polymer electrolytes, PEO-based solid polymer electrolytes received huge consideration as they can dissolve various Li salts. However, the development of an ideal PEO-based solid polymer electrolyte is hindered by its insufficient tensile strength and lower ionic conductivity due to its semi-crystalline and soft chain structure. In order to lower the crystallization and improve the performance of PEO-based solid polymer electrolyte, tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanofillers were introduced into PEO matrix. Herein, a PEO20/LiTFSI/x-WO3 (PELI-xW) (x = 0%, 2.5%, 5%, 10%) solid composite polymer electrolyte was prepared by the tape casting method. The solid composite polymer electrolyte containing 5 wt% WO3 nanofillers achieved the highest ionic conductivity of 7.4 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 60 °C. It also confirms a higher Li-ion transference number of 0.42, good electrochemical stability of 4.3V, and higher tensile strength than a PEO/LiTFSI (PELI-0W) fillers-free electrolyte. Meanwhile, the LiFePO4│PELI-xW│Li ASS-LBs demonstrated high performance and cyclability. Based on these findings, it can be considered a feasible strategy for the construction of efficient and flexible PEO-based solid polymer electrolytes for next-generation solid-state batteries.

Abstract:In lithium batteries, composite solid electrolytes gain their reputation owing to their great safety, excellent mechanical properties, and remarkably improved electrochemical performance. Herein, composite polyethylene oxide (PEO)‐based solid electrolytes with well‐dispersed in situ polydopamine‐coated lithium montmorillonite (PDA@LiMMT) nanofillers are successfully fabricated. The involvement of PDA@LiMMT retards significantly the crystallization of PEO, addressing a manifest enhancement in the ionic conductivity of the modified composite solid electrolyte. A conducive ionic conductivity value of 3.06 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 60 °C is reached, while the electrochemical window widens to 4.7 V. The assembled Li/solid polymer electrolytes/LiFePO 4 battery exhibits a 158.2 mA h g −1 high discharge specific capacity at a current density of 0.5C; besides, the capacity retention rate keeps 86% after 200 cycles. The enhancement of the cycle stability of the solid‐state batteries highlights the excellent interfacial stability between the modified solid electrolytes and the lithium electrode, which originates from lithiophilicity of PDA.

Abstract:Solid polymer electrolytes replacing traditional liquid electrolytes are considered as an important strategy for developing lithium metal batteries with high safety and energy density. However, poor ionic conductivity and weak mechanical performances have greatly limited the development of solid polymer electrolytes. Here, we dispersed inorganic ceramic particles Li6 · 4La3Zr1 · 4Ta0 · 6O12 (LLZTO) in the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) electrospun nanofibers and then introduced them into polyethylene oxide (PEO) polymers to prepare composite electrolytes. The PVDF nanofibers with embedded LLZTO fillers can simultaneously reduce the crystallinity of the PEO polymer and provide a strong framework support for the composite electrolyte, thereby promoting the transmission of lithium ions and improving the lithium dendrite growth inhibition ability of the composite electrolyte. In addition, the uniform dispersion of garnet-type LLZTO active ceramic filler in the PVDF nanofiber membrane can further optimize the migration path of lithium ions. More importantly, the dehydrofluorination of PVDF due to the introduction of LLZTO can enhance the interaction among PVDF, LLZTO and lithium salts, which promotes dissociation of the lithium salt. The ionic conductivity of the composite electrolyte is as high as 9.30 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 50 °C, and the voltage of Li/Li symmetrical battery would not change significantly during 1200 h at 0.3 mA cm−2. Additionally, the composite electrolytes exhibit good electrochemical stability with the capacity retention rate of 96% under 1 C after 500 cycles. These results provide a strategy for the development of next-generation high-safety all-solid-state lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) based on polyethylene oxide (PEO) offer manufacturing feasibility and outstanding mechanical flexibility. However, the low ionic conductivity of the CPEs at room temperature, as well as the poor mechanical properties, have hindered their commercialization. In this work, Solid-state electrolytes based on polyethylene oxide (PEO) with and without fumed SiO 2 (FS) nanoparticles are prepared by electrostatic spinning process. The as-spun PEO hybrid nanofiber electrolyte with 6.85 wt% FS has a relatively high lithium ion conductivity and electrochemical stability, which is 4.8 × 10 -4 S/cm and up to 5.2 V vs. Li + /Li, respectively. Furthermore, it also shows a higher tensile strength (2.03 MPa) with % elongation at break (561.8). Due to the superior electrochemical and mechanical properties, it is promising as high-safety and all-solid-state polymer electrolyte for advanced Li-metal battery.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium batteries using solid composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) with great thermal and mechanical stabilities are believed to be the next-generation advanced electrochemical devices, but they suffer from low ionic conductivity at room temperature and a poor interface between the electrode and the electrolyte. Herein, we present a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based CPE allowing rapid Li+ migration enabled by coordinating the anions on the exposed metal sites of a metal–organic framework (MOF). The CPE contains MOF-74 fillers, a PEO matrix, and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI). Owing to the strong anchoring effect of MOF-74 fillers on TFSI– verified by calculations and measurements, the CPE exhibits a high ionic conductivity (5.5 × 10–5 S·cm–1 at 30 °C), a wide electrochemical stability (4.8 V), and an improved Li+ transference number (0.36). Besides, the adjusted local current density promotes the interfacial stability against the Li anode in a Li symmetric battery, which performed well at a current density of both 0.2 and 0.4 mA cm–2. With these advantages, the all-solid-sate LiFePO4 battery fabricated exhibited stable cycling performances (161 mA h g–1 and maintained 152 mA h g–1 after 300 cycles at 0.5 C). This strategy gives fresh reference to the utilization of different MOFs and polymers in building high-performance solid-state lithium batteries.

Abstract:Solid electrolytes have gained attention recently for the development of next-generation Li-ion batteries since they can fundamentally improve the battery stability and safety. Among various types of solid electrolytes, composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) exhibit both high ionic conductivity and excellent interfacial contact with the electrodes. Incorporating active nanofibers into the polymer matrix demonstrates an effective method to fabricate CSEs. However, current CSEs based on traditional poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) polymer suffer from the poor ionic conductivity of PEO and agglomeration effect of inorganic fillers at high concentrations, which limit further improvements in Li+ conductivity and electrochemical stability. Herein, we synthesize a novel PEO based cross-linked polymer (CLP) as the polymer matrix with naturally amorphous structure and high room-temperature ionic conductivity of 2.40 × 10−4 S cm−1. Li0.3La0.557TiO3 (LLTO) nanofibers are incorporated into the CLP matrix to form composite solid electrolytes, achieving enhanced ionic conductivity without showing filler agglomeration. The high content of Li-conductive nanofibers improves the mechanical strength, ensures the conductive network, and increases the total Li+ conductivity to 3.31 × 10−4 S cm−1. The all-solid-state Li|LiFePO4 batteries with LLTO nanofiber-incorporated CSEs are able to deliver attractive specific capacity of 147 mAh g−1 at room temperature, and no evident dendrite is found at the anode/electrolyte interface after 100 cycles.Graphic AbstractA highly ionic-conductive 3-D fiber network composite solid electrolyte is introduced based on Li-ion conducting nanofibers and amorphous poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) cross-linked polymer. With the reinforcement of Li0.3La0.557TiO3 (LLTO) nanofibers, the continuous 3D conduction network formed within the polymer matrix greatly enhances the electrochemical and mechanical properties of resultant composite solid electrolytes. Consequently, the lithium dendrite is effectively controlled after long cycles, and the all-solid-state Li|LiFePO4 prototype cells demonstrate excellent cycling stability at room temperature.

Abstract:A rapid rise in the development of portable electronic devices and telecommunication technologies has led to an ever-growing demand for high safety, large energy density, and cost-effective systems for storing energy. Rechargeable all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries are extremely productive without compromising performance. In this study, garnet-type Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) filler was prepared employing the sol–gel method. That follows, the high-performance poly(ethylene oxide)/lithium perborate (LiBO 3 )/LLZO composite solid polymer electrolyte was fabricated using a simple solution-casting technique. The morphology and composition of the prepared CSPE (composite solid polymer electrolyte) (PEO-LiBO 3 -LLZO) were investigated using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy in addition to other physicochemical characterization techniques. The composite solid polymer electrolyte exhibits a maximum ionic conductivity of 2.8 × 10 −4 S cm −1 with LLZO filler and a wide electrochemical window of 4.5 V vs. Li + /Li. The prepared electrolyte reveals good electrochemical efficiencies with elevated discharge capacity of 73.4 mAhg −1 and excellent coulombic efficiency of 99% since 100 cycles. Based on these results, the prepared composite solid polymer electrolyte furnishes an auspicious methodology for the advancement of high-performing rechargeable all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Composite polymer electrolytes with fillers exhibit appealing properties, such as high ionic conductivity, good flexibility, and low cost. However, poor compatibility and electrochemical instability, especially at high current rates, are the disadvantages of these electrolytes. In this study, we report the influence of particle size of Li2O. SiO2. TiO2. P2O5 (LSTP) on polyethylene oxide (PEO)-matrix towards the fabrication of Li-metal batteries with a LiFePO4 cathode. Compared to micron-sized particles, the high surface area of the nanoparticles in the polymer matrix is beneficial for improved electrochemical stability at 0.1 mA cm−2. Furthermore, the nanosized particulates facilitate faster ionic conductivity (1.09 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 80 °C) and excellent stability at higher voltage >4.5 V. Our results clearly indicate the role of filler morphology in enhancing the ionic conductivity and stability. Finally, the full cell made of metallic Li anode and LiFePO4 cathode displays a capacity of 110 mAh g−1 (after 100 cycles under 1C at 60 °C) with a reasonable cycle life using such a nanocomposite solid polymer electrolyte.

Abstract:Solid polymer composite electrolyte (SPCE) with good safety, easy processability, and high ionic conductivity was a promising solution to achieve the development of advanced solid‐state lithium battery. Herein, through electrospinning and subsequent calcination, the Li0.33La0.557TiO3 nanowires (LLTO‐NWs) with high ionic conductivity were synthesized. They were utilized to prepare polymer composite electrolytes which were composed of poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO), poly (propylene carbonate) (PPC), lithium bis (fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI), and LLTO‐NWs. Their structures, thermal properties, ionic conductivities, ion transference number, electrochemical stability window, as well as their compatibility with lithium metal, were studied. The results displayed that the maximum ionic conductivities of SPCE containing 8 wt.% LLTO‐NWs were 5.66 × 10−5 S cm−1 and 4.72 × 10−4 S cm−1 at room temperature and 60°C, respectively. The solid‐state LiFePO4/Li cells assembled with this novel SPCE exhibited an initial reversible discharge capacity of 135 mAh g−1 and good cycling stability at a charge/discharge current density of 0.5 C at 60°C.

Abstract:Replacing the flammable liquid electrolytes with solid ones has been considered to be the most effective way to improve the safety of the lithium batteries. However, the solid electrolytes often suffer from low ionic conductivity and poor rate capability due to their relatively stable molecular/atomic architectures. In this study, we report a composite solid electrolyte, in which polyethylene oxide (PEO) is the matrix and Li6.4La3Zr1.45Ta0.5Mo0.05O12 (LLZTMO) and Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) are the fillers. Ta/Mo co-doping can further promote the ion transport capacity in the electrolyte. The synthesized composite electrolytes exhibit high thermal stability (up to 413 °C) and good ionic conductivity (LLZTMO–PEO 2.00 × 10−4 S·cm−1, LLZTO–PEO 1.53 × 10−4 S·cm−1) at 35 °C. Compared with a pure PEO electrolyte, whose ionic conductivity is in the range of 10−7~10−6 S·cm−1, the ionic conductivity of composite solid electrolytes is greatly improved. The full cell assembled with LiFePO4 as the positive electrode exhibits excellent rate performance and good cycling stability, indicating that prepared solid electrolytes have great potential applications in lithium batteries.

Abstract:The application of solid-state electrolyte in lithium metal batteries is a promising technology to meet the demands for next-generation high-energy-density storage systems. Poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid polymer electrolytes have been widely studied, but their electrochemical window is too narrow to be compatible with high-voltage cathodes and their mechanical properties are poor as well. Combination of organic and inorganic compounds is an effective approach to solve this limitation. In this study, Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) was surface-modified with a silane coupling agent and compounded with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) to form a 3D nanofiber framework via electrospinning technology, and the PEO-Succinonitrile (SN)-LiTFSI solution was uniformly dispersed in the 3D nanofiber framework to form a continuous Li+ transport path. The prepared composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) showed high ionic conductivity (1.58 × 10−4 S cm−1 at room temperature), a broad electrochemical window (5.1 V, vs. Li/Li+), and an attractive mechanical strength of 49.4 MPa. In addition, solid-state Li/CSE/NCM811 batteries exhibited high coulombic efficiency and significant stable cycling performance.

3D core-shell nanofibers framework and functional ceramic nanoparticles synergistically reinforced composite polymer electrolytes for high-performance all-solid-state lithium metal battery

Abstract:Satisfactory ionic conductivity, excellent mechanical stability, and high-temperature resistance are the prerequisites for the safe application of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) in all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs). In this study, a novel poly-m-phenyleneisophthalamide (PMIA)-core/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-shell nanofiber membrane and the functional Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) ceramic nanoparticle are simultaneously introduced into the PEO-based SPEs to prepare composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs). The core PMIA layer of composite nanofibers can greatly improve the mechanical strength and thermal stability of the CPEs, while the shell PEO layer can provide the 3D continuous transport channels for lithium ions. In addition, the introduction of functional LLZTO nanoparticle not only reduces the crystallinity of PEO, but also promotes the dissociation of lithium salts and releases more Li+ ions through its interaction with the Lewis acid-base of anions, thereby overall improving the transport of lithium ions. Consequently, the optimized CPEs present high ionic conductivity of 1.38×10−4 S/cm at 30 °C, significantly improved mechanical strength (8.5 MPa), remarkable thermal stability (without obvious shrinkage at 150 °C), and conspicuous Li dendrites blocking ability (>1800 h). The CPEs also both have good compatibility and cyclic stability with LiFePO4 (>2000 cycles) and high-voltage LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) (>500 cycles) cathodes. In addition, even at low temperature (40 °C), the assembled LiFePO4/CPEs/Li battery still can cycle stably. The novel design can provide an effective way to exploit high-performance solid-state electrolytes.

Abstract:Practical, high-yield mesoporous organic polymer (MOP) spheres were successfully synthesized by a novel self-template method, which can be used as fillers to prepare poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based polymer electrolytes membranes. The result shows that both the electrical conductivity and lithium-ion conductivity of PEO-based electrolytes can be improved effectively by adding the MOP filler. The electrolyte membranes are mechanically robust, thermally stable to over 270 degrees C, and can effectively block dendrites penetrating from metallic-lithium anode to cathode. The Li+ transfer conductivity of composite electrolyte membrane increases to 4.4 x 10(-4 )S cm(-l) at 63 degrees C. All-solid-state LiFePO4/MOP-PEO-LiTFSI/Li cell shows excellent cycling (144 mAh g(-1) after 300 cycles) and rate (167 mAh g(-1) at 0.2 C, 170 mAh g(-1) at 0.5 C, 160 mAh g(-1) at 1 C and 145 mAh g(-1) at 2 C) performance.

Abstract:Solid-state electrolytes have good mechanical and thermal stability to meet the safety and performance of advanced lithium-based rechargeable battery technologies. However, the drawbacks such as high interfacial impedance and low ionic conductivity of the solid-state polymer electrolytes at room temperature are the current demanding challenges that need to be addressed. Here, we report hybrid polymer composite electrolyte that is composed of a chitosan composite polymer electrolyte soaked with a slightly liquid electrolyte. The hybrid polymer composite electrolyte has a high ionic conductivity about 6.8x10(-4) Scm(-1) with a low interfacial impedance at room temperature and outstanding flexibility. The lithium-metal/LiFePO4 solid-state cell using this hybrid polymer composite electrolyte can be operated at room temperature maintaining a high cathode capacity of 120 mA h g(-1) for 130 cycles. This chitosan/poly(ethylene oxide)-based hybrid polymer composite electrolyte system provides a promising direction for the creation of novel solid-electrolyte, which meets both high ionic conductivity and low interfacial impedance requirements for practical solid-polymer batteries.

Abstract:The urgent need for safer batteries is leading research to all-solid-state lithium-based cells. To achieve energy density comparable to liquid electrolyte-based cells, ultrathin and lightweight solid electrolytes with high ionic conductivity are desired. However, solid electrolytes with comparable thicknesses to commercial polymer electrolyte separators (~10 μm) used in liquid electrolytes remain challenging to make because of the increased risk of short-circuiting the battery. Here, we report on a polymer–polymer solid-state electrolyte design, demonstrated with an 8.6-μm-thick nanoporous polyimide (PI) film filled with polyethylene oxide/lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (PEO/LiTFSI) that can be used as a safe solid polymer electrolyte. The PI film is nonflammable and mechanically strong, preventing batteries from short-circuiting even after more than 1,000 h of cycling, and the vertical channels enhance the ionic conductivity (2.3 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 30 °C) of the infused polymer electrolyte. All-solid-state lithium-ion batteries fabricated with PI/PEO/LiTFSI solid electrolyte show good cycling performance (200 cycles at C/2 rate) at 60 °C and withstand abuse tests such as bending, cutting and nail penetration.

Abstract:Solid-state electrolytes have been widely investigated for lithium batteries since they provide a high degree of safety. However, their low ionic conductivity and substantial growth of lithium dendrites hamper their commercial applications. Garnet-type Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) is one of the most promising active fillers to advance the performance of the solid polymer electrolyte. Nevertheless, their performance is still limited due to their large interfacial resistance. Herein, we embedded the amorphous Li2O2 (LO) into LLZTO particles via the quenching process and successfully achieved an interfacial layer of Li2O2 around LLZTO particles (LLZTO@LO). Amorphous Li2O2 acts as a binder and showed an excellent affinity for Li+ ions which promotes their fast transference. Moreover, the stable and dense interfacial Li2O2 layer enhances interfacial contact and suppresses the lithium dendrite growth during the long operation cycling process. The PEO/10LLZTO@2LO solid composite polymer electrolyte (SCPE) showed the highest ionic conductivity of 3.2 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 40 °C as compared to pristine LLZTO-based SCPE. Moreover, the Li│(PEO/10LLZTO@2LO) │Li symmetric cell showed a stable and smooth long lifespan up to 1100 h at 40 °C. Furthermore, the LiFePO4//Li full battery with PEO/10LLZTO@2LO SCPE demonstrated stable cycling performance for 400 cycles. These results constitute a significant step toward the practical application of solid-state lithium metal batteries (SS-LMBs).
