Abstract:A novel Mn-intercalated layered titanate as highly active photocatalyst in visible-light region has been synthesized via a convenient and efficient exfoliation–flocculation approach with divalent Mn ions and monolayer titanate nanosheets. The 0.91nm interlayer spacing of obtained photocatalyst is in accordance with the sum of the thickness of titanate nanosheet and the diameter of Mn ions. The yellow photocatalyst shows a spectral response in visible-light region and the calculated band gap is 2.59eV. The photocatalytic performance of this material was evaluated by degradation and mineralization of an aqueous dye methylene blue under visible-light irradiation, and an enhanced photocatalytic activity in comparison with protonated titanate as well as the P25 TiO2 and N-doped TiO2 was obtained. Additionally, the layered structure is retained, no dye ions intercalating occurs during the photocatalysis process, and a ∼90% photocatalytic activity can be remained after reusing 3 cycles.
Switching from antiferro- to ferromagnetism in nanocrystalline La1-xSr1+xCoO4 (x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6) layered perovskite oxides: Effect of mixed valence state of Co on magnetic, optical and photocatalytic properties

Abstract:Though extensive work has already been done on bulk La1-xSr1+xCoO4 layered oxides, there is hardly any report about their nano-crystalline nature particularly containing higher Sr level (x ≥ 0.4), which may exhibit interesting magnetic and especially photocatalytic properties because of enhanced surface area. Moreover, the phases with higher Sr doping levels can be formed only at higher temperature, which otherwise contain significant amounts of impurities. In order to synthesize them in nanocrystalline form in pure state at lowest possible temperature, we have applied glycine nitrate combustion method using excess fuel for the synthesis of nanocrystalline La1-xSr1+xCoO4 (x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6) layered perovskites oxides. Efforts were also done to synthesize phases with x > 0.6 but remained unsuccessful. The prepared nanophases were thoroughly characterized using PXRD, XPS, SEM, SQUID VSM and UV-DRS to examine the structural, morphological, optical, magnetic as well as photocatalytic properties. All the phases exhibit a mixed valence state of Co in +3 and +4, as confirmed by XPS analysis, which has a remarkable effect on various physical properties, especially magnetic and photocatalytic properties. An abrupt change in magnetic behaviour from antiferromagnetic for x = 0 and 0.2 phases to ferromagnetic one in case of x = 0.4 and 0.6 was observed. The optical band gap values (Eg) of all the synthesized nanophases obtained from DRS lies in the visible range (1.57 to 1.47 eV), which make them suitable and reliable photocatalysts for dye degradation. Moreover, the synthesized nanophases were assessed for their photocatalytic activity employing Rhodamine-B (RhB) dye as a model contaminant. The results revealed that the La0.4Sr1.6CoO4 photocatalyst efficiently and swiftly degraded RhB dye in 60 min. Keeping in view the performance of La0.4Sr1.6CoO4 photocatalyst, the study was expanded to include the deterioration of various other organic dye pollutants, including Methyl orange (MO), Methylene blue (MB) as well as the ternary combination of these contaminants (RhB + MB + MO).

Abstract:Many 3D titanate and niobate perovskites are useful photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution but are active only under UV-light. Various strategies, including the use of noble metal-based catalysts/cocatalysts and heterojunction formation, are adopted to induce visible-light absorption and enhance photocatalytic activity. Here, a simple coupled-substitution approach in 3D niobate perovskite oxides, Na0.5Ca0.5M0.25Nb0.75O3 (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co), is demonstrated to show enhanced hydrogen evolution without using heterojunction systems or noble metal catalysts/cocatalysts. The approach is innovative since the incorporation of a non-Jahn–Teller transition metal ion induces local octahedral distortion in the structure, while the Jahn–Teller active ions show negligible to no distortion in the presence of Nb5+, a d0 system, that is known to undergo second-order Jahn–Teller distortions. The effects of octahedral distortion on the structure, optical absorption, and in cocatalyst-free hydrogen evolution are discussed. The Cr compound shows a hydrogen evolution of ∼200 μmol g–1 h–1, the highest rate among all the compounds in the series, due to its fast charge transfer dynamics. The study offers important insights into the understanding of underlying factors influencing the photocatalytic activity of the perovskite-based materials for the development of practical photocatalytic systems.

Magnetoelectric Properties of Aurivillius-Layered Perovskites

Abstract:In the present work, we have synthesized rare-earth ion modified Bi4−xRExTi2Fe0.7Co0.3O12−δ (RE = Dy, Sm, La) multiferroic compounds by the conventional solid-state route. Analysis of X-ray diffraction by Rietveld refinement confirmed the formation of a polycrystalline orthorhombic phase. The morphological features revealed a non-uniform, randomly oriented, plate-like grain structure. The peaks evident in the Raman spectra closely corresponded to those of orthorhombic Aurivillius phases. Dielectric studies and impedance measurements were carried out. Asymmetric complex impedance spectra suggested the relaxation of charge carriers belonging to the non-Debye type and controlled by a thermally activated process. Temperature-dependent AC conductivity data showed a change of slope in the vicinity of the phase transition temperature of both magnetic and electrical coupling natures. Based on the universal law and its exponent nature, one can suppose that the conduction process is governed by a small polaron hopping mechanism but significant distortion of TiO6 octahedral. The doping of the A-sites with rare-earth element ions and changes in the concentrations of Fe and Co ions located on the B-sites manifested themselves in saturated magnetic hysteresis loops, indicating competitive interactions between ferroelectric and canted antiferromagnetic spins. The magnetic order in the samples is attributed to pair-wise interactions between adjacent Fe3+–O–Fe3+, Co2+/3+–O–Co3+/2+, and Co2+/3+–O–Fe3+ ions or Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interactions among magnetic ions in the adjacent sub-lattices. As a result, enhanced magnetoelectric coefficients of 42.4 mV/cm-Oe, 30.3 mV/cm-Oe, and 21.6 mV/cm-Oe for Bi4−xDyxTi2Fe0.7Co0.3O12−δ (DBTFC), Bi4−xLaxTi2Fe0.7Co0.3O12−δ (LBTFC), and Bi4−xSmxTi2Fe0.7Co0.3O12−δ (SBTFC), respectively, have been obtained at lower magnetic fields (<3 kOe). The strong coupling of the Aurivillius compounds observed in this study is beneficial to future multiferroic applications.

Abstract:Nanoscale structural modulation with different layer numbers in layer-structured complex oxides of the binary Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 -BiFeO 3 system can give rise to intriguing phenomena and extraordinary properties, originating from the correlated interfaces of two different phases with different strain states. In this work, we studied the nanoscale structural modulation induced by Co-substitution in the Aurivillius-type oxide of Bi 11 Fe 3 Ti 6 O 33 with a unique and naturally occurred mixed-layer structure. Nanoscale structural evolution via doping occurred from the phase-modulated structure composed of 4- and 5-layer phases to a homogeneous 4-layer structure was clearly observed utilizing x-ray diffraction and electron micro-techniques. Significantly, magnetic response for the samples under various temperatures was recorded and larger magnetic coercive fields ( e.g. H c ∼ 10 kOe at 50 K) were found in the phase-modulated samples. Analyses of the x-ray absorption spectra and magnetic response confirmed that the low-temperature magnetic behaviour should be intrinsic to the phase-modulated structure inside the structural transformation region, mainly arising from structural distortions at the correlated interfaces.
Enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from cation modified single perovskite niobates in the absence of noble metal cocatalysts

Abstract:Meeting the growing demand for robust, earth-abundant and noble-metal-free photocatalysts in practical hydrogen-evolution reaction systems is crucial. Herein, cation modified perovskite niobates, Na0.5Sr0.5M0.25Nb0.75O3 (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co), are synthesized using a simple heterovalent coupled substitution strategy via solid-state reactions. The Cr compound as a single semiconductor system exhibits a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 188 μmol. h‒1. g‒1, which significantly surpasses the performance of many contemporary catalysts that rely on the use of noble metal cocatalysts. Apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of Cr, Mn, Fe and Co containing compounds are 2.24, 0.55, 0.65 and 0.74%, respectively. The photophysical properties like tuned band gap, suitable energy level positioning, charge carrier density, photostability of the materials along with charge transfer resistance that are responsible for the efficient spatial charge separation and charge transfer dynamics impacting the hydrogen evolution are investigated. The paper discusses the role of cation modification and their effects on the photophysical properties and hydrogen evolution activity of the perovskite niobates in noble-metal free condition. These nonprecious noble-metal-free perovskite niobates furnishes a new perspective for the future design of photocatalysts for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:A new series of ABO(3)-type perovskite photocatalysts MCo1/3Nb2/3O3 (M = Ca, Sr, and Ba) were synthesized by a solid-state reaction method, in which the B site is occupied by Coll and Nb5+ randomly in a charge-balanced manner. They were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photocatalytic activity measurements with Pt and NiOx cocatalyst under visible-light irradiation (lambda > 420 nm), respectively. It is determined from the reflectance spectra that the optical transitions for these compounds, corresponding to visible-light absorption, are directly forbidden, and the band structures are suggested to be composed of the Co2+ 3d states and the Nb5+ 4d states. The feature of the electronic structure for BaCo1/3Nb2/3O3 calculated by the full potential-linearized augmented plane wave (F-LAPW) method shows that the O 2p states are strongly hybridized with the Co2+ 3d states, and little hybridized with the Nb5+ 4d states. The difference in their photocatalytic activity is ascribed to their special crystal and electronic structures.
Structural stability improvement, Williamson Hall analysis and band-gap tailoring through A-site Sr doping in rare earth based double perovskite La2NiMnO6

Abstract:<div>The structural, morphological and optical properties of single-phase polycrystalline La2−xSrxNiMnO6 (x = 0, 0.3 and 0.5), synthesized by solid state reaction were investigated. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX), Raman spectroscopy and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) to elucidate the role of A-site Sr-doping in double perovskite La2NiMnO6. Rietveld analysis of XRD patterns revealed that all the samples have monoclinic structure with space group P21/n. Positive gradient in the Williamson Hall plots revealed the presence of tensile strain in all the samples. The morphological studies revealed that average grain size increases along with appreciable decrease in porosity with Sr doping. The Ni/Mn antisite disorder was introduced in the La2NiMnO6 by Sr-doping confirmed by an increase in the full width at half maximum (FWHM) and decrease in intensity of the Raman modes at around 540 and 665 cm−1 which correspond to the antisymmetric stretching and symmetric stretching modes, respectively. DRS results reveal that the band gap in La2NiMnO6 can be tuned down by Sr-doping to a value of 1.37 eV (very close to 1.40 eV, considered as optimum value for better efficiency of a solar cell). Thus, Sr-doped La2NiMnO6 may be of prime importance for applications in solar cells.</div>

Abstract:Heterostructures composed of dissimilar perovskite oxides with different properties provide an opportunity to observe emergent phenomena, and have promising applications. A key feature of oxide heterostructures is interfacial electronic and orbital reconstruction. In this paper, we demonstrate a dramatic variation in magnetic anisotropy caused by electric tuning of the charge-transfer process in a La0.8Sr0.2CoO3/La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 bilayer structure. By repeatedly changing the valence state of Co ions in the La0.8Sr0.2CoO3 top layer using ionic-liquid gating, reversible switching of the magnetic easy axis of the bottom La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 layer between the out-of-plane and the in-plane direction is achieved, accompanying a modulation of the interfacial exchange coupling. Mn-to-Co charge transfer and its effect on the interfacial orbital occupancy are further confirmed by x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray-linear-dichroism analysis. The considerable interfacial charge transfer causes an overlap of the Mn and Co 3d orbitals, resulting in orbital reconstruction in the La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 layer and thus magnetic anisotropy. This work demonstrates a promising method for tuning the orbital occupancy and related properties of perovskite heterostructures.

Abstract:Double perovskites R2NiMnO6 (R= Rare earth element) (RNMO) are a significant class of materials owing to their Multifunctional properties with structural modifications. In particular, multifunctional double perovskite oxides La2NiMnO6 (LNMO) which possess both electric and magnetic orderings, chemical flexibility, versatility, and indispensable properties like high ferromagnetic curie temperature, high absorption rates, dielectrics, etc. have drawn a lot of attention due their rich physics and diverse applications in various technology. This justifies the intense research in this class of materials, and the keen interest they are subject to both the fundamental and practical side. In view of the demands of this material in lead-free perovskite solar cells, photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes, clean hydrogen production, electric tuneable devices, Fuel cells, gas sensing, and Biomedical applications, there is a need for an overview of all the literature so far, the ongoing research and the future prospective. This review summarised all the Physical and Structural Properties of LNMO such as electric, magnetic, catalytic, and dielectric properties with their underlying mechanisms. This review article provides insight into the scope of studies in LNMO material for exploring unexposed properties in new material research and to identify areas of future investigation of the materials in the double perovskite family.

Cation Doping of La2NiMnO6 Complex Oxide with the Double Perovskite Structure for Photovoltaic Applications

Abstract:Nanopowders of complex oxides with the double perovskite structure La2Ni1 – xFexMnO6 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4) were synthesized using the glycine-nitrate combustion method. Thin nanostructured layers based on the obtained materials were fabricated and studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and UV-Vis optical spectroscopy. It was shown that introduction of Fe3+ ions into the La2NiMnO6 crystal structure at low concentration (x = 0.2) leads to an increase in the band gap value. To determine the photosensitivity of La2Ni1 – xFexMnO6 thin layers, Schottky diodes based on them were fabricated and their photovoltaic characteristics were studied in the dark and under standard AM1.5G illumination conditions. It has been found that cation doping with Fe3+ ions at low concentration increases the photosensitivity of La2NiMnO6 thin layer by ~7%. The presented results provide new possibilities for application of inorganic perovskite materials in solar photovoltaics.

Abstract:The nitrogen lightly doped perovskite manganite La0.5Ba0.5MnO(3-δ)-xNx was synthesized following a mild nitridation strategy by optimizing annealing temperature, annealing time and NH3/Ar flow rate ratio. Neutron powder diffraction (NPD) characterization evidences an N-doping triggered structural phase transition from pseudo-cubic Pm-3m to tetragonal P4/mmm and further confirms a preferable substitution at O1 and O2 sites closing to the Ba-rich layers. N 1s K-edge X-ray absorption near edge spectrum (XANES) with total fluorescence yield (TFY) mode, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy collectively convince the Mn–N bonded state. The O/N atomic ratio is determined to be 2.26/0.22 by XPS analysis closing to the value of 2.25/0.18 from NPD refinement. Magnetic property characterization reveals that both long-range Mn3+-O-Mn4+ ferromagnetic coupling and high Curie temperature (T C ) are maintained upon N-doping. Besides, significant spin frozen with robust domain pinning is identified below T C which can be ascribed to the short-range Mn–N–Mn clusters and/or oxygen defects. This work expands the connotation of transition-metal based perovskite oxynitride and may inspire the development of photosensitive semiconductor device with magnetic response.

Abstract:Photocatalytic O2-generation reaction is recognized as a crucial step in water splitting and has drawn great attention of researchers. In this work, a hetero-layered composite photocatalyst was successfully prepared by a facile self-assembly method based on electrostatic interaction between oppositely charged Zn/Cr-layered double hydroxide (Zn/Cr-LDH) and lead niobate nanosheets. The layer-by-layer stacking of Zn/Cr-LDH and HPb2Nb3O10 nanosheets was beneficial for rapid migration of photo-induced charge carriers inside the photocatalyst because of large contact area. In the meantime, Zn/Cr-LDH and HPb2Nb3O10 components exhibited suitable energy-band alignment, which led to efficient separation of photo-induced charge carriers. The composite photocatalyst showed enhanced photocatalytic O2-generation activity under visible-light irradiation without loading cocatalyst. Briefly, this work expanded the applications of AB2Nb3O10-based materials in photocatalytic energy conversion and proved that constructing composites based on electrostatic self-assembly of complementary 2D materials is a promising strategy for development of more efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:By surpassing single perovskites, double perovskites without any sort of Lead content are applicable as materials for solar and related applications due to their more stable nature, good catalytic efficiency, and negligible toxicity. So as to investigate the structural, electrical, and other diverse aspects of the Bi 2 FeCrO 6 and Bi 1.8 La 0.2 FeCrO 6 materials, we have synthesised them using a traditional solid-state reaction technique. By performing X-ray diffraction study, the crystal structures for both the samples are found to be monoclinic. The sample's strain and crystallite sizes were extracted using the Williamson-Hall formalism. Molecular bonding and metal oxide vibrations like Bi–O and Fe–O were analysed via Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. To further verify crystal structure and optical phonon modes, Raman spectroscopy has been performed. The surface analysis of the samples recorded by FESEM reveals that the small grains are allocated homogeneously through distinctive grain barrier. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy revealed narrow band gaps for both samples which makes them suitable for photo-catalytic actions. The extracted valence band maximum (VBM) levels of the samples are in the domain of O 2 evolution criteria. Along with the Urbach energy, refractive indices were also calculated in optical studies. For electrical study, dielectric characteristics of the compounds were analysed over a large temperature series. The thermal variation of the frequency exponent (n) obtained from the fitting of Jonscher's rule verified the existence of the correlated barrier hopping conduction method. From impedance spectroscopy, negative temperature coefficients of resistance (NTCR) response in addition to non-Debye type of relaxation were noted. DC conductivity experiments provide the activation energy of the materials. Thermistor applicability for samples shows promising results. Ferroelectricity has been confirmed for both the samples.

Abstract:Perovskite-type oxide semiconductors, as promising photocatalysts, possess flexible structures with corner-shared BO6 octahedrons and A cations, but are limited by the broad band gaps and severe photo-induced carrier recombination. Herein, a series of La1.33-xNa3xTi2O6/Na3La2(BO3)3 composites were synthesized by annealing the layered La2Ti2O7 with NaBH4. The doping of Na+ ions in perovskite's A-site promotes the transformation of La2Ti2O7 into La1.33-xNa3xTi2O6 phase, meanwhile, substituted La species turn into Na3La2(BO3)3 phase. The crystalline degree of perovskite structure evolves with the ratio of Na+ ions in the A site, and La2Ti2O7 undergoes amorphization, recrystallization, and further decomposition as the Na species increases. In well-crystallized La1.17Na0.48Ti2O6/Na3La2(BO3)3, intimate interfacial contacts induce extended optical absorption and optimized charge transfer. Under visible light irradiation, the sample exhibits significantly enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution activity, with hydrogen production rate reaching 660 μmol∙g−1·h−1, whereas La2Ti2O7 has almost no catalytic activity. This work presents a novel strategy to transform the perovskite oxides at a relatively low temperature by exchanging cations with reductive NaBH4. It demonstrates applications in the development of visible light-driven perovskite-based heterogeneous photocatalysts.

Abstract:Transition metal perovskite oxynitrides are emergent materials for applications as visible light-active photocatalysts for water splitting and CO2 reduction and as thermoelectric, dielectric, and magnetic materials. They have been reported for early transition metals Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, and W in the B sites and alkaline earth or rare earth metals in the A sites. Nitrogen is less electronegative and more polarizable than oxygen, and nitride is more charged than oxide. As a consequence, the introduction of nitride in an oxidic perovskite has important effects on the covalency of bonds, the energy of electronic levels, and the valence states of the cations. This work discusses fundamental and recent developments of perovskite oxynitrides of transition metals of groups 4, 5, and 6 as photocatalytic and electronic materials, focusing on the important aspects of synthetic methodologies, crystal structures, and anion ordering, in connection with the observed physical and chemical properties. Some examples of compounds with late transition metals and complex structures such as layered and double perovskites are also discussed.

Abstract:The highly conducting and transparent inorganic perovskites SrBO$_3$ with V, Nb, Mo, and their mixtures at the B-site have recently attracted the attention of the oxide electronics community as novel alternative transparent conducting oxides. For different applications from solar cells to transparent electronics, it is desirable to tune the optical transmission window in the ultraviolet (UV), visible and infrared (IR) range. The conventional approach is substitutional design at the A- and/or B-site. Here, we suggest a method by engineering the off-stoichiometry of the perovskite, opening new pathways to broaden the range of applications without adding additional elements. For oxide molecular beam epitaxy grown SrNbO$_3$ on GdScO$_3$ substrates, we show that controlled Sr deficiency shifts the plasma edge from about 2 eV in the visible range into the near-infrared region, 1.37 eV (similar to stoichiometric SrVO$_3$). Here, epitaxial growth allows going beyond the limitations of phase stability set by thermodynamics. The suggested approach opens a new design toolbox by including controlled vacancy sites as quasi-substitutional virtual elements.

Unraveling the Structural, Dielectric, Magnetic, and Optical Characteristics of Nanostructured La2NiMnO6 Double Perovskites.

Abstract:Double perovskite La2NiMnO6 (LNMO) nanoparticles and nanorods were synthesized via a hydrothermal process, where only aqueous inorganic solvents are used to regulate the microscopic morphology of the products without using any organic template. They crystallized in a monoclinic (P21/n) double perovskite crystal structure. The LNMO nanoparticles exhibited spherical morphology with an average particle size of 260 ± 60 nm, and the LNMO nanorods had diameters of 430 ± 120 nm and length about 2.05 ± 0.65 μm. Dual chemical oxidation states of the Ni and Mn ions were confirmed in the LNMO samples by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Strong frequency dispersion dielectric behavior observed in the LNMO ceramics, is attributed to the space charge polarization and the oxygen vacancy induced dielectric relaxation. A ferroelectric—paraelectric phase transition appearing near 262 K (or 260 K) in the LNMO ceramics prepared from nanoparticles (or nanorods) was identified to be a second-order phase transition. The LNMO samples are ferromagnetic at 5 K but paramagnetic at 300 K. The LNMO nanoparticles had larger saturation magnetization (MS = 6.20 μB/f.u. @ 5 K) than the LNMO nanorods (MS = 5.68 μB/f.u.) due to a lower structural disorder in the LNMO nanorods. The semiconducting nature of the nanostructured LNMO with an optical band gap of 0.99 eV was revealed by the UV–visible absorption spectra. The present results enable the nanostructured LNMO to be a promising candidate for practical spintronic devices.

Abstract:Coupling between different interactions allows to control physical aspects in multifunctional materials by perturbing any of the degrees of freedom. Here, we aim to probe the correlation among structural, electronic and magnetic observables of Sm$ _{2} $NiMnO$ _{6} $ ferromagnetic insulator double perovskite. Our employed methodology includes thermal evolution of synchrotron X-ray diffraction, near edge and extended edge hard X-ray absorption spectroscopy and bulk magnetometry. The magnetic ordering in SNMO adopts two transitions, at T$ _{C} $=159.6K due to ferromagnetic arrangement of Ni-Mn sublattice and at T$ _{d} $=34.1K because of anti-parallel alignment of polarized Sm paramagnetic moments with respect to Ni-Mn network. The global as well as local crystal structure of SNMO undergoes isostructural transitions across T$ _{C} $ and T$ _{d} $, observed by means of temperature dependent variation in Ni/Mn-O, Ni-Mn bonding characters and super exchange angle in Ni-O-Mn linkage. Hybridization between Ni, Mn 3\textit{d}, O 2\textit{p} electronic states is also modified in the vicinity of magnetic transition. On the other hand, the signature of Ni/Mn anti-site disorders are evidenced from local structure and magnetization analysis. The change in crystal environments governs the magnetic response by imposing alteration in metal - ligand orbital overlap. Utilizing these complimentary probes we have found that structural, electronic and magnetic states are inter-coupled in SNMO which makes it a potential platform for technological usage.
