Abstract:This paper describes a nested preview control by utilizing virtual plane for biped walking pattern generation including Center Of Gravity (COG) up-down motion. A preview control is effective to generate the biped walking patterns online. We proposed a biped walking pattern generation in our past research. In the method, biped walking patterns including COG up-down motions were generated by using the preview control with the virtual plane. However, some Zero-Moment Point (ZMP) errors between ZMP references and ZMP outputs remain. This is because prospective information of the ZMP reference cannot be transformed to the virtual plane in the method. In this paper, the ZMP errors are therefore decreased by using a nested structure. Besides, 3-Dimensional (3D) walking is achieved in an experiment.
Long-term outcomes of male imperforate anus with recto-urethral fistula: laparoscopy-assisted anorectoplasty versus posterior sagittal anorectoplasty

Abstract:Purpose: A five-parameter fecal continence evaluation questionnaire (FCEQ) and incidence of complications were used for long-term assessment of laparoscopy-assisted anorectoplasty (LAARP) and posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP) for treating male imperforate anus (MIA) with rectobulbar (RB) or rectoprostatic (RP) fistulas. Methods: Subjects were 64 consecutive Japanese MIA patients with RB or RP fistulas treated at a single institution between 1995 and 2021. FCEQ data collected retrospectively were used to calculate a fecal continence evaluation (FCE) score (best = 10) and coefficient of variation for FCE (FCECV). The statistical significance threshold was defined at p < 0.05. Results: Fistulas were RB (n = 40; LAARP = 25/40, PSARP = 15/40) or RP (n = 24; LAARP = 17/24, PSARP = 7/24). Mean ages at surgery and status of the sacrum were similar (p = 0.06, 0.05 and 0.51). FCE scores in RP-LAARP were consistently higher with less FCECV but differences were only statistically significant from 7 years postoperatively (p < 0.05). While FCE scores for RB-LAARP and RB-PSARP were similar (p = 0.99), FCECV were lower for RB-LAARP compared with RB-PSARP. LAARP was associated with less-wound infections, but greater incidence of anal mucosal prolapse unrelated to preoperative status of the sacrum. Conclusion: Long-term postoperative FCEQ assessment favored LAARP for treating MIA with either RB or RP fistulas.

Low Anterior Resection Syndrome and Quality of Life of Patients After Sphincter Preservation Surgery: A Prospective Study

Abstract:Background After anterior resection (AR), one of the most debilitating complications is low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) seen in about 64% of patients. The severity of the LARS score was significantly correlated with neoadjuvant treatment, the extent of rectal surgery, complication by the anastomotic leak, female gender, and age < 64 years. In this study, we analyzed the impact of various clinical factors on LARS and also the various domains of quality of life (QoL). Purpose To assess the incidence of LARS in patients undergoing sphincter-sparing surgery for rectal cancer after the patient starts long-term defecating per anus, change in the QoL, and relation to LARS and factors affecting it. Methods One year before, 72 patients who had undergone AR in the Regional Cancer Centre were interviewed by a trained interviewer and data was collected from the file. The questionnaires used were the Wexner Incontinence score, LARS Malayalam Questionnaire, and European Organisation For Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QLQ C30 Malayalam translations. Statistical measures The LARS score was used to categorize patients into three grades. The scores were compared with clinical and social factors using the χ2 test for association. Continuous variables were compared by the Spearman Rho test. Results Details of patients were studied (male: 55.6% (40) and female: 44.4% (32)). Fifty patients underwent low anterior resection (LAR). The mean LARS score was 25.61, with 47.2% of patients having severe LARS score. The mean Wexner score was 6.84. The relation with type of surgery, approach (laparoscopic vs open), or type of neoadjuvant therapy was not found to be significant. A higher LARS score did not impact overall QoL as assessed by FACT-C. Insomnia and diarrhea symptoms scores were significantly worsened. The pain score was worse for those undergoing stapler anastomosis. Wexner's score was worse for those who had received adjuvant chemotherapy. Role functioning score was better for AR compared to low anterior resection (LAR). Only distance from the anal verge was found to be a significant cause of LARS and was negatively correlated. Discussion LARS of severe degrees were seen in most patients. No modifiable risk factors were significantly found to affect the chance of LARS. However, LARS did not have a significant impact on QoL, neither did the type of surgery. So sphincter preservation can be offered to the patients, but all patients undergoing LAR should be counseled well about the risk of LARS before surgery.
Short and Long-Term Outcomes of PSARP versus LAARP and Single versus Staged Repair for Infants with High-Type Anorectal Malformations: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Background: We aimed to compare among patients with high-type anorectal malformations (ARM): (i) short- and long-term outcomes of laparoscopic-assisted anorectoplasty (LAARP) compared to classic posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP) and (ii) the results of single-stage versus staged PSARP. Methods: Using a defined search strategy, two independent investigators systematically reviewed the English literature. PRISMA guidelines were followed, and meta-analysis was performed using RevMan5.3. Results: Of 567 abstracts screened, 7 papers have been included (254 pts; 121 PSARP, 133 LAARP) in the first systematic review and meta-analysis. The length of hospitalization was shortened in LAARP versus PSARP (10.9 versus 14.4 days; p < 0.0001). PSARP and LAARP were comparable in terms of early postoperative complications (28.9% versus 24.7%; p = ns) and rectal prolapse (21.6% versus 17.5%; p = ns). At long-term follow-up, the presence of voluntary bowel movements (74.0% versus 83.5%; p = ns) and the incidence of soiling (45.5% versus 47.6%; p = ns) were similar in both PSARP and LAARP. Six papers (297 pts) were included in the second systematic review, with three comparative studies included in the meta-analysis (247 pts; 117 one-stage, 130 staged procedures). No significant difference in terms of presence of voluntary bowel movements after single-stage versus staged procedures (72.6% versus 67.3%; p = ns) has been detected. Conclusions: LAARP seems to be a safe and effective procedure, showing short- and long-term outcomes similar to PSARP. One-stage PSARP could be a safe alternative to the classic three-stage procedure, even for those infants with high-type ARM. Further and larger comparative studies would be needed to corroborate these partial existing data.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the operative complications and managements of laparoscopic assisted anorectal pull-through (LAARP) in children with congenital anorectal malformations.Methods This report was based on a retrospective study from January 2010 to December 2015.A total of 92 boys underwent colostomy during neonatal period.There were rectourethral fistulas (n =34),rectovesical fistula (n =23) and rectoprostatic fistula (n =35).Complications and anorectal functions are assessed by questionnaires and Kelly score.The follow-up period was 4 months to 5 years.Results Among 11 cases with superficial wound infection of anoplasty with bowel retraction,one case underwent novel anorectoplasty.Seven patients developed postoperative anal prolapse and 3/7 underwent prolapse resection and anoplasty.Four cases of complicated intra-abdominal infection responded well to conservative measures.Thirty-one patients was followed up for over 3 years.The Kelly clinical scores were 5-6 (n =17),3-4 (n =11) and 0-2 (n =3).Among three incontinent cases,1/3 had anal stenosis resolving with dilatation and 2/3 had tethered cord syndrome.Conclusions The incidence of complications may be minimized by strict perioperative cares and experienced techniques.

Abstract:Objectives:To assess bowel function and quality of life in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC)after ileal pouch anal anastomosis (IPAA).Methods:Clinical data of 37 UC patients after IPAA between 2014 and 2017 were retrospectively analyzed at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital School of Medicine Zhejiang University. The IBDQ and Bowel Function questionnaire were used for analyzing correlation between clinical variables and quality of life or bowel function.Results:Laparoscopic operation was performed in 12 cases at stage 2 and 25 cases at stage 3. Postoperative defecation of stage 3 patients were better than that of stage 2 ( t=6.72, P<0.05). The number of daily defecation in age >45-year-old group was more than that in <45-year-old ( t=3.49, P<0.05), and the rate of evening stool seepage in the older group was higher than in the younger group( t=5.28, P<0.05). The total score of intestinal symptoms of IBDQ in patients of pouchitis was lower than that without pouchitis ( r=0.330, P<0.05). The total score in age >45 in terms of systemic symptoms ( r=0.349, P<0.05) and emotional function ( r=0.379, P<0.05) was higher than age <45. Conclusions:Outcomes of UC patients after IPAA are satisfactory, bowel function and quality of life is related with age, and stage of IPAA affect postoperative defecation.

Abstract:To assess the outcome and quality of life artificial anal reconstruction after laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection(APR) in low rectal cancer patients.Clinical data of 60 cases with low rectal cancer undergoing APR in our department from January 2010 to January 2013 were retrospectively analyzed. Sixty patients were divided into 2 groups according to anal reconstruction procedure, inclding 32 patients of abdominal colostomy as colostomy group and 28 patients of in-situ artificial anal reconstruction as anal reconstruction group. After a median follow-up of 1 year, the quality of life was assessed by Fetal Incontinence Quality of Life Scale(FIQL scale) and Cleveland Clinic Florida Fecal Incontinence Scores(CCS-FIS scale). In addition, the outcome and complications were compared between the two groups.Compared with the colostomy group, the anal reconstruction group presented longer operation time [(204.8 ± 18.8) min vs. (173.3 ± 23.5) min, P<0.01], later passage time [(45.1 ± 9.3) h vs. (27.7 ± 9.4) h, P<0.01], and higher incidence of mucosal edema(42.9% vs. 18.8%, P<0.05). There were no significant differences in average hospital stay and other complication morbidities(all P>0.05). After follow-up, the embarrassment scale in anal reconstruction group was better compared to colostomy group(3.1 vs. 2.2, P<0.01). However, there were no significant differences in the lifestyle, coping and depression scales between the two groups (all P>0.05). Twenty(71.4%) patients in anal reconstruction group had satisfactory continence 1 year after operation.In-situ artificial anal reconstruction after laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection can preserve fecal function in low rectal cancer patients and improve the quality of life after APR operation.

Abstract:This study explored postoperative outcomes for patients with lower rectal cancer who underwent low anterior resection (LAR) or intersphincteric resection (ISR). A total of 49 patients (33 LAR, 16 ISR) were followed using anorectal manometry and quality of life (QOL) questionnaires over a year, pre- and post surgery. The primary aim of this study is to clarify differences in anal manometry, sphincter function, fecal incontinence, and QOL between the two surgical arms. The secondary aim was to identify indicators suitable for assessing relationships between anorectal manometry measurements, fecal incontinence, and QOL. Anorectal manometry elements (AMEs), such as atmospheric maximum mean squeeze pressure (aMSP), maximum tolerable volume (MTV), and incremental maximum mean squeeze pressure (iMSP), showed no significant differences during the observation period. However, maximum resting pressure (MRP), high-pressure zone length (HPZ), and threshold volume (TV) were significantly worse in the ISR group. Fecal incontinence, measured by Wexner and Kirwan scores, was significantly better in the LAR group. We observed no differences in SF36 between the two groups. Multi-correlation analysis revealed positive and negative correlations among these factors, with inverse correlations between anorectal manometry measurements and incontinence assessments decreasing post-surgery. We found no correlation between SF36 and anorectal manometry at any time. The findings indicate that surgical technique affects postoperative anal function, fecal incontinence, and SF36. However, combined assessment methods should be used with caution when deriving relationships between anal function and SF36.

Abstract:Background/Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate long-term outcome and quality of life after the Swenson operation for rectosigmoid Hirschsprung's Disease (HD). Methods: Forty-five patients who underwent the Swenson procedure for HD underwent follow-up for 8 to 16 years. Long-term outcome and quality of life were assessed by interviews and questionnaires including scoring systems. Forty-four healthy children with similar age, sex, and education level distributions used as controls. Results: In 45 patients, 23 (51.1%) had bowel dysfunction. Seventeen patients (37.8%) suffered from fecal soiling. According to the clinical bowel function scoring system, the patients' scores (7.6 ± 2.1) were significantly lower than those of the controls (11.4 ± 0.6; P <.05). Because of poor fecal continence, 25 patients (55.7%) had to restrict their foods. School absence occurred in 6 (13.3%) patients. Seven patients (15.6%) had problems in peer relationships. According to the Quality-of-Life Scoring Criteria, 86.7% patients had good or fair quality of life. The patients' scores (7.7 ± 2.9) were significantly lower than those of the controls (11.6 ± 0.7; P <.05). And the scores of patients who had fecal soiling and incontinence (6.3 ± 2.7) were significantly lower than those of patients without fecal soiling and incontinence (8.4 ± 2.6; P <.05). Conclusions: Although most patients had good or fair quality of life after surgical correction for HD, the long-term outcome and quality of life are not as good as surgeons expected. The bowel function and quality of life of the patients were poorer than those of healthy children. Fecal soiling is very common and affects patients' quality of life. Long-term regular follow-up is indispensable. Close attention should be paid to minimizing bowel dysfunction for patients with HD postoperatively to improve their quality of life. Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the quality of life (QoL) in patients undergoing anterior resection (AR) or abdominoperineal extirpation (APE) for rectal cancer in a sample of patients recruited from a field trial.SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Abdominoperineal resection has been reported to put patients at higher risk of disruption to QoL than sphincter-preserving surgery.METHODS: Fifty patients treated with AR and 23 patients treated with APE were prospectively followed up. All patients were treated in curative attempt and were disease-free throughout the study. QoL was assessed before surgery and 6 to 9 and 12 to 15 months after surgery.RESULTS: Multivariate analysis of variance and subsequent post hoc comparisons revealed a main effect for time (role function, emotional function, body image, future perspective, and micturition-related problems) and group in favor of APE (sleeping problems, constipation, diarrhea), and a time-by-group interaction (role function). No significant results were obtained for the remaining scores, but patients undergoing APE consistently had more favorable QoL scores than those undergoing AR. Multivariate analysis and post hoc comparisons revealed a particularly poor QoL for patients undergoing low AR. They had a significantly lower total QoL, role function, social function, body image, and future perspective, and more gastrointestinal and defecation-related symptoms than patients undergoing high AR.CONCLUSION: Patients undergoing APE do not have a poorer QoL than patients undergoing AR. Patients undergoing low AR have a lower QoL than those undergoing APE. Attention should be paid to QoL concerns expressed by patients undergoing low AR.

Erudition from primary posterior sagittal anorectoplasty for anorectal malformations over two decades

Abstract:Purpose: Perioperative and early post-operative outcomes of Primary Posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (P-PSARP) were evaluated. Method: Retrospective analysis of cases who underwent P-PSARP from 2004 to 2019 was done. Perioperative care, management, complications, voluntary bowel movement, soiling and constipation, graded by Krickenbeck criteria were studied. Results: One hundred fifty six patients (134 girls) underwent P-PSARP at median age of 5 months (3 months to 14 years) in girls and 5(1-10) days in 21 boys. One male cloaca was operated at 5 months age. Of 20 boys, 5, 8, 4, 3 had rectobulbar urethral fistula, rectoprostatic urethral fistula, bladder neck fistula and male cloaca. Girls had vestibular fistula, rectovaginal fistula, vulval anus, anterior ectopic anus, pouch perineal fistulae and posterior anus with H type fistula in 114, 7, 6, 5, 1 and 1. Complications included wound infection, excoriation, oedema, mucosal prolapse, anal stricture, anal retraction and mortality in 6, 4, 5, 4, 4, 1 and 1, respectively. 35/155(12 neonates) required postoperative dilatations for 5(1-12) months. At follow-up, 96/114(84.2%) had voluntary bowel movements. 46/155 (29.7%) and 9/155 had constipation and soiling. 32:14:0 had grade 1:2:3 constipation, treated with diet (grade 1) and laxatives (grade 2) respectively. 4:3:2 had grade 1:2:3 soiling for initial 3 months, treated with bowel management programme. Conclusion: P-PSARP is feasible, subject to proper case selection and good perioperative care, once learning curve is achieved.
Anorectal malformation and Hirschsprung's disease: a cross-sectional multicentre comparison of quality of life and bowel function to a healthy population

Abstract:Purpose: Children with anorectal malformation (ARM) and Hirschsprung's disease (HD) often experience bowel symptoms into adulthood, despite definitive surgery. This study evaluates the quality of life (QOL) and bowel functional outcome of children treated for ARM and HD in comparison to healthy controls. Methods: Between December 2020 and February 2023, we recruited patients with ARM and HD aged 3-17 years at four tertiary referral centres, who had primary corrective surgery done >12 months prior. Healthy controls were age-matched and sex-matched. All participants completed the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory Generic Core Scales 4.0, General Well-Being (GWB) Scale 3.0 and Family Impact (FI) Module 2.0 Questionnaires. Bowel Function Score (BFS) Questionnaires were also administered. We also performed subgroup analysis according to age categories. Appropriate statistical analysis was performed with p<0.05 significance. Ethical approval was obtained. Results: There were 306 participants: 101 ARM, 87 HD, 118 controls. Patients with ARM and HD had significantly worse Core and FI Scores compared with controls overall and in all age categories. In the GWB Scale, only ARM and HD adolescents (13-17 years) had worse scores than controls. ARM and HD had significantly worse BFSs compared with controls overall and in all age categories. There was significant positive correlation between BFS and Core Scores, GWB Scores and FI Scores. Conclusion: Patients with ARM and HD had worse QOL than controls. Lower GWB Scores in adolescents suggests targeted interventions are necessary. Bowel function influences QOL, indicating the need for continuous support into adulthood.
Long-term Outcomes After Surgery Involving the Pelvic Floor in Rectal Cancer: Physical Activity, Quality of Life, and Health Status

Abstract:PurposeThis study has aimed to evaluate the effects of surgery on physical activity (PA), quality of life (QoL), and disease-specific health status, by analyzing the differences between sphincter-preserving surgery (low anterior resection (LAR)) and abdominoperineal resection (APR) among rectal cancer survivors.MethodsIndividuals who were diagnosed with rectal cancer and who underwent an APR or a LAR between 2000 and 2009 were included. The different questionnaires on QoL, disease-specific health status, and physical activity began their surveys in 2010. Differences in QoL, health status, and physical activity were analyzed between the APR group and the LAR group.ResultsThe study included 905 rectal cancer survivors (LAR, 632; APR, 273). Besides a higher rate of radiotherapy treatment in the APR group (94% vs. 75%, p < 0.001), there were no differences in clinical characteristics or in comorbid conditions between the LAR group and APR group. No significant differences were found in PA level between the patients who had undergone an APR vs. a LAR. Regarding QoL, APR patients did report a worse physical (p = 0.009) and role functioning (p = 0.03), as well as a worse body image (p = 0.001), compared to patients who had undergone a LAR. However, they reported fewer constipation (p = 0.02) and gastrointestinal problems (p = 0.009). Finally, compared to patients who had undergone a LAR with a permanent ostomy, APR patients reported a better body image (p = 0.048) and less stoma-related problems (p = 0.001).ConclusionsThis study showed no differences in PA level among the patients who had undergone an APR versus a LAR. With respect to their QoL, their physical and role functioning seemed to be worse in the APR patients. However, these differences in outcomes resolved when comparing the APR group with patients after a LAR with a permanent ostomy.

Comparison of patient-reported quality of life and functional outcomes following laparoscopic and transanal total mesorectal excision of rectal cancer

Abstract:PURPOSE: The effect of transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME) on patients' quality of life and functional outcomes is not fully understood. This study aimed to compare the quality of life and bowel, anorectal, and urogenital functions after laparoscopic and TaTME.METHODS: Laparoscopic or TaTME was performed for 202 propensity score-matched patient pairs with rectal cancer between January 2014 and December 2017 at the National Cancer Center, Korea. The outcomes for all patients were assessed using anorectal manometry, the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Core Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-C30) and Colorectal Cancer-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-CR38), low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) score, Fecal Incontinence Severity Index, and International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS). This retrospective comparative study included patients who completed anorectal manometry and the questionnaires before treatment and at 1 year after surgery.RESULTS: The EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-CR38 showed comparable outcomes regarding the quality of life in both groups. More patients experienced major LARS in the transanal group at 1 year postoperatively (31.0% vs. 6.8% in the laparoscopic group, P = 0.004). Multivariable analysis revealed no significant difference in the LARS score between the groups at 1 year postoperatively (odds ratio, 2.30; 95% confidence interval, 0.79-6.72; P = 0.127). Significant differences in the IPSS were not noted between the groups.CONCLUSION: The quality of life and functional outcomes were comparable between the laparoscopic and transanal approaches; however, our findings suggest a higher rate of LARS after TaTME.

Usefulness of posterior sagittal anorectoplasty for redo pull-through in complicated and recurrent Hirschsprung disease: Experience with a single surgical group

Abstract:Aim: To retrospectively examine 12 patients with Hirschsprung disease (HD) who underwent posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP) for various complications. Methods: This study included patients with HD who underwent redo pull-through (PT) via PSARP at our institute between 2005 and 2014. The type of initial procedure, clinical presentations, indications, and functional results were analyzed. Postoperative excretory function was assessed using the Krickenbeck classification. Results: The study group comprised 9 boys and 3 girls (total, 12). Five patients were diagnosed with rectosigmoid aganglionosis, 5 with long segment aganglionosis, and 2 with total colonic aganglionosis. The primary operations performed on these patients included the Soave, Duhamel, Swenson, Rehbein, and Ikeda-Soper procedures. The interval between the primary operations and reoperation ranged from 5months to 8years (median, 3years). The indications for PSARP were rectocutaneous fistulae (6 cases), frozen pelvis (5 cases), severe anastomotic stricture (3 cases), rectovaginal fistulae (2 cases), and hemorrhagic proctitis with an inflammatory polyp (1 case). All fistulae were repaired using PSARP; only one rectocutaneous fistula recurred and required two additional surgeries. Stricture and hemorrhagic proctitis were cured in all involved cases. Nine patients were followed up for 8months to 10years after PSARP surgery (average, 5.1years). All 9 patients had voluntary bowel movements within 6months after the last PSARP and stoma closure: 3 had normal bowel movement, while 6 had varying degrees of soiling, depending on the length of residual colon. None complained of constipation. Conclusion: PSARP is useful for treating severe complications of failed PT in HD. Complex and recurrent rectocutaneous fistulae and frozen pelvis are the main indications for PSARP, while soiling is the most common surgical complication.
A Phase Signature for Detecting Wet Structures in the Shallow Subsurface of Mars Using Polarimetric P-band SAR

Abstract:Introduction: Over the last two decades, remote sensing using polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has been widely used to study the earth’s surface. One of the main interesting application is the mapping of the near-surface soil moisture from space-borne SAR data (ERS 1/2, JERS1, ENVISAT, and RADARSAT). Several experiments demonstrated that low-frequency radar has penetration capabilities that can be used to map subsurface heterogeneities such as geological interfaces or wet layers. As regards soil moisture, it is well known that the presence of water significantly influences the radar response of a terrain. Nevertheless, very few authors used the phase information from SAR data to detect moisture. In previous studies, we showed that a copolarized phase difference between horizontal (HH) and vertical (VV) channels observed on SAR images is correlated to buried wet layers. It can be used to detect wet subsurface layers down to a larger depth than when only considering HH and HV amplitude signals [1]. As Mars is concerned, recent measurements by the Gamma Ray Spectrometer (GRS) on board the Mars Odyssey spacecraft allowed the mapping of ground-ice (in the form of water or hydrated minerals) in the upper few meters of the southern hemisphere of Mars at mid and high latitudes [2]-[5]. Since the geographic range of ground-ice stability strongly depends on the abundance of atmospheric water, several studies discuss the possible location and occurence of liquid water on Mars [6]-[7]. Using a general circulation model to calculate ground temperature, Haberle et al. [7] determine the current locations on Mars where pure liquid water or brine solutions could exist, that is where the ambient pressure is greater than the water vapor pressure at the local temperature. One could then reasonably assume the presence of liquid water in the few upper meters of the Martian surface, at least temporarily. Since radar is sensitive to dielectric contrasts, the liquid water in the shallow subsurface could lead to easily detectable interfaces because of a high permittivity due to the moisture. Moreover, Mars has been shown to have a wide range of scattering properties in the wavelength range from C-band (3 cm) to Lband (18 cm) including volume scattering from buried terrains, and specific dielectric and magnetic properties due to ironrich materials [8]. We propose the use of P-band (70 cm) polarimetric SAR system to investigate the presence of wet structures in the first few meters of the Martian soil. Geoelectrical model of the near subsurface: Numerous studies of ground-ice stability predicted the occurence of a layered subsurface, in which a dry (ice-free soil) upper layer covers a wet lower layer (ice-cemented soil) [2],[5]. For that reason, we considered a two-layers scattering problem in order to assess the capabilities of a P-band SAR system to penetrate soil for retrieving information about subsurface, in particular detecting moisture using the radar copolarized phase signal. Since the alpha X-ray spectrometer on the Spirit rover showed that the composition of Gusev soil is similar to the Viking 1/2, and Pathfinder landing sites [9]-[11], we assumed a upper dry layer composed of a mixture of iron oxides, basalts, salts, and meteoritic materials, covering a wet lower layer mainly basaltic in composition, with a variable water content (Fig. 1). Each layer is characterized by its roughness and electromagnetic parameters. Permittivity measurements were performed on several minerals that appear to be good analogs to those observed on the surface of Mars. The permittivity of the mixture for the upper dry layer is derived from the dielectric constant of each mineralogical component using the second formula of Lichteneker [12]. According to our laboratory measurements around 400 MHz, we found a complex permittivity of for an upper layer mainly composed of basaltic materials mixed with small amounts of iron oxides (goethite, hematite) and meteoritic materials. The permittivity of the underlying basaltic layer is set at ! " ! # when dry and will increase with respect to the moisture content.
Serum CD25 Levels During Interleukin‐2 Therapy: Dose Dependence and Correlations with Clinical Toxicity and Lymphocyte Surface sCD25 Expression

Abstract:Summary Using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), we have measured serum levels of a soluble form of the p55 subunit of the interleukin-2 receptor complex, soluble CD25 (sCD25), at regular intervals in the sera of 51 pediatric and adult cancer patients receiving recombinant human interleukin-2 (IL-2). The IL-2 was administered in repetitive weekly cycles alone or in combination with lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells. Levels of CD25 correlated with clinical toxicities reflected by nadir blood pressures, percentages of weight gained, and minimum Karnofsky performances during IL-2 therapy. Coadministration of autologous in vitro activated LAK cells together with IL-2 did not significantly affect the pattern of sCD25 release relative to administration of IL-2 alone. Examination of sCD25 release in response to different doses of IL-2 revealed a statistically significant dose effect of IL-2 on the sCD25 levels in patient sera. In addition, the level of sCD25 in patient sera also correlated strongly with expression of CD25 on the surface of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) obtained from patients following IL-2 therapy. These studies demonstrate the utility of the sCD25 ELISA as a clinical tool for monitoring patients on treatment regimens that include IL-2.
