Abstract:Superhydrophobic/hydrophobic nanofibrous networks have attracted much attention because of their potential applications in tissue engineering. Cell growth in the scaffold of tissue engineering can be controlled by the hydrophobicity of the scaffold. The superhydrophobic/hydrophobic surfaces are usually made from synthesized polymers, which generally are not biocompatible and biodegradable and, thus, not suitable for biomedical applications. Zein is an amphiphilic protein from corn, and it is potential for hydrophobic surface formation. This work aims to make zein superhydrophobic/hydrophobic nanofibrous network using electrospinning. The formed zein networks show high hydrophobicity with the water contact angles ranging from 130.5 +/- 1.0 degrees to 153.6 +/- 2.1 degrees. The cell attachment and growth on the zein networks are studied. It is observed that the amount of the cells attached and grown in the zein nanofibrous networks are higher than the ones on the conventional zein casting films. The results indicate that the electrospun zein nanofibrous network has great potential as scaffold in tissue engineering to support cell growth and tissue regeneration. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The novelty of this study is providing a new toughening strategy in terms of the challenge of improving the poor toughness of zein film. Two types of biochar, pyrolysis biochar (PB) and hydrochar microspheres (HM), were blended into the zein system through solution casting to develop zein composite films with excellent toughness. The effects of biochar types and contents on the mechanical properties of the resulting composite films were investigated. The results indicated that better compatibility of zein composite films was achieved due to the hydrogen bond formed by biochar and hydrophilic amino acid in zein. A better surface structure of HM com-posite films was obtained than PB composite films by the uniform size and regular shape of HM. Better thermal stability shown in PB contributed to better thermal properties in the zein system than HM. Mechanical properties showed that tensile strength and modulus were increased with increasing PB or HM contents. Although increasing PB or HM contents decreased the elongation at break, the elongation at break reached a maximum of 475.47% at 0.1 g HM added composite film showing excellent toughness due to the strong interface binding and micro-nano size effect. The composite films prepared in this study have broad application prospects in packaging and agricultural films.

Abstract:In this paper, low-temperature oxygen plasma method was used to modify the surface of PP (polypropylene) microporous membranes, The influence of oxygen plasma on the chemical structure and physical performance of the membrane was investigated with SEM, XPS and IR spectra, The results of XPS and IR showed that polar groups, -OH, -COOH, C = O were created on these membrane surfaces. The groups -OH and -COOH were useful for activation and grafting process for affinity membrane with Cu2+ as a metal-chelating ligand, The influence of plasma treatment condition on the adsorbability of affinity membrane for lysozyme was carried out. The optimal adsorbability of lysozyme was 8 mu g/cm(2) on the affinity membrane prepared for 20 min and under 68 W plasma condition.

Abstract:Hydrophobic surfaces are of interest in many electronic devices and biomedical applications for the control of wettability and adsorption behavior. Most of the artificial hydrophobic surfaces are not biodegradable, renewable, or mechanically flexible and are often expensive, which limits their potential applications. Natural materials are better choices; however, most of them are hydrophilic and water-absorbing and general modification of molecules, expensive equipment and fluorine-containing coating cannot be avoided. In contrast, zein, a major protein of corn and an amphiphilic, biodegradable, renewable, flexible, inexpensive biopolymer, which is abundantly present in nature, satisfies all the above requirements. The objective of this work is to form a hydrophobic surface through a facile and inexpensive method of self-assembly monolayer (SAM) assisted evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) by zein. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used for the characterization of surface morphology and surface elements. Water contact angle (WCA) was applied to characterize the hydrophobicity of films. Both zein concentration and solvent concentration had effects on the hydrophobicity of the film. A film with high hydrophobicity was formed by size controlled SAM assisted EISA. The WCA of the zein hydrophobic film reached 126°.

Abstract:Airglow discharge plasma (ADP) was used to modify the surface properties of zein film, and the influence of plasma dosage was investigated by controlling treating time (from 0s to 120s). Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FT-IR) results indicated that the ADP treatment partly destroyed the acylamino groups of zein film, and the X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) analysis proved that oxygen was introduced into the matrix of zein films during ADP treatment, with the content enhanced from 14.29% to 18.45%. The microstructure of zein film exhibited a more robust surface with longer treating time, corresponding to the X-ray diffraction (XRD) results that the crystal structure of zein film was destructed under ADP treatment. The contact angle changed from 78.3° ± 2.3° to 62.1° ± 1.7° under ADP treatment, representing higher wettability. Mechanical properties also showed desirable changes under ADP treatment, with the tensile strength increased from 12.25 ± 1.23 MPa to 18.12 ± 0.68 MPa. ADP treatment could be a promising approach to modify the surface properties of protein films.

Abstract:Abstract The photoluminescence (PL) and PL excitation (PLE) spectra of Si6−zAlzOzN8−z (β-sialon):Eu2+ phosphors with small z values (z=0.025–0.24) were studied at room temperature and 6 K. The PL and PLE spectra exhibit fine structure with the PL lines being as sharp as 45–55 nm even at room temperature; this fine structure was enhanced by decreasing the z value. These results can be used for expanding the color gamut of liquid crystal displays, particularly in the blue–green region. From low-temperature measurements, the fine PLE structure was ascribed to discrete energy levels of 7FJ states. The 4f65d excited states of Eu2+ are considered to be localized near the 4f orbital. This is because the bonding of Eu2+ with surrounding atoms is ionic rather than covalent. Lattice phonon absorptions were also observed in the PLE spectrum, revealing that the optically active Eu2+ ions are located in the β-sialon crystal. The PL spectrum of the sample with the smallest z value (0.025) consists of a sharp zero-phonon line and lattice phonon replicas, which results in a sharp and asymmetric spectral shape.

Abstract:To improve the water resistance property of zein film, polycaprolactone (PCL) was grafted on the zein film after atmospheric‐pressure cold plasma (ACP) pretreatment. The grafting yields of PCL ranging from 15.91% ± 0.67% to 28.95% ± 0.79% were remarkably enhanced than the untreated one (12.15% ± 0.57%; p < . 05), which indicated that ACP modification could effectively improve the grafting ability of the zein film. Fourier‐transform infrared spectrum and X‐ray diffraction patterns revealed that PCL layer had been successfully grafted and the lateral α‐helix packing was susceptible to plasma treatment. Findings from this study indicated that ACP pretreatment was an effective modification approach in zein‐based polymers for packaging application.

Abstract:This current research explored the application of cold plasma (CP) treatment to modify zein-alginate oligosaccharide (zein-AOS) composites in an ethanol-water solution. Anti-solvent method was used to prepare zein-AOS nanoparticles (NPs), and the objective was to investigate the mechanism by which CP promotes interaction between protein and saccharides. Characterization results indicated that CP treatment improved hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction between zein and AOS. The CP zein-AOS NPs underwent dispersion and rearrangement, resulting in smaller aggregates with better dispersibility. Among the various induction conditions tested, the zein-AOS85 NPs (induced at 85 W for 2 min) exhibited superior performance as delivery wall materials, with smaller particle size (234.67 nm), larger specific surface area (9.443 m2/g), and higher surface charge (-35.43 mV). In addition, zein-AOS85 showed high stability when used as delivery wall material, providing more binding sites and self-assembly dynamics for nutrients. Curcumin was used as the nutrient model in this study, and CP was found to enhance hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interaction, and hydrophobic interaction between zein, AOS, and nutrients, resulting in increased encapsulation efficiency (EE) from 63.80 % to 85.17 %. The delivery system also exhibited good pH, ionic strength, storage, and dispersion stability.

Abstract:Zein powders were subjected to dielectric barrier discharges (DBD) cold plasma (CP) treatment, and the physicochemical and structural properties were investigated. The results indicated that CP treatment decreased the average diameter of zein micelles. It also increased the free sulfhydryl (SH) group concentration and decreased the pH of zein solutions. Significant improvement was observed in solubility of zein in both neutral and acidic water solutions after treatment. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) results indicated the conformation rearrangement for all treated samples. FTIR spectrum confirmed the change of secondary structure for amide I region (1600–1700 cm−1) after CP treatment. Furthermore, the film-forming properties of zein were also studied. It was found that the increase of CP treatment time could reinforce the tensile strength (TS) and surface hydrophilicity of zein films. It is suggested that the DBD CP treatment technology can improve the utilization and broaden the application field of zein as an effective modification method.

Abstract:Electrospun zein membranes were prepared using DMF as solvent. By changing the solution concentration, the electrospinning voltage and the distance between the spinneret and collector, nanofibrous meshes without bead defects could be obtained. In order to improve the mechanical strength of the hydrated zein meshes, core-shell-structured nanofibrous membranes with PCL as the core material and zein forming the shell were prepared by coaxial electrospinning. The core-shell structure of the composite fibers was confirmed by SEM characterization of the fibers, either extracted with chloroform to remove the inner PCL, or elongated to expose their cross-section. The composition and average diameter of the composite fibers could be modulated by the feed rate of the inner PCL solution. It was found that the core-shell fibrous membranes have similar wettability to the electrospun zein mesh. The presence of PCL in the fibers could significantly improve the mechanical properties of the zein membrane.

Abstract:In this paper we reported that the pulsed dielectric barrier discharge was used to deposit functional films from allylamine vapors. The influence of processing parameters on the film characteristics was investigated in detail. The film property was measured by water contact angle, and the chemical compounds were analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible measurement. Atomic force microscopy was employed to scan the film morphology, and the density of amino group on surface was estimated using fluorescence measurements technology. The results of this work should be of specific value with respect to tissue culture studies, in which surface modifications involving the introduction of functional groups demonstrated a high efficacy in promoting cell growth. Abstract:This research has proved that polyaldehydes derived from sucrose are effective in improving the dry and wet mechanical properties and cytocompatibility of zein films. Zein is a corn-derived storage protein with satisfactory film-forming ability and proven biosafety, and thus has been used in biomedical and food packaging fields. However, under normal conditions, pristine zein films have poor tensile properties in the dry or wet state, and cross-linking is required to improve these properties. Heretofore, most powerful cross-linkers are toxic and environmentally harmful, while safe cross-linkers are less efficient. In this study, zein films were cross-linked with a safe and effective biobased polyaldehydes derived from sucrose. The wet and dry tensile properties of the zein films were improved without compromising their clarity and UV shielding ability. Unexpectedly, cell culture studies showed significantly enhanced cytocompatibility of zein films after polyaldehydes cross-linking. Therefore, polyaldehyde cross-linked zein films with improved properties may serve as potential candidates for biomedical and packaging applications.

Abstract:Cytocompatibility of particle zein (Pzein) and film zein (Fzein) was evaluated and compared with polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), its copolymer poly(hydroxybutyrate‐co‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), polylactic acid (PLA), and collagen, using HL‐7702 cells, in terms of cell attachment rate within 3 h, and cell viabilities at 3 and 6 days determined by the 3‐(4,5‐dimethylthiazol‐2‐yl)‐2,5‐diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) method. The zein degradation test was carried out using collagenase and trypsin, and the degradation product was added to the culture medium at different concentrations in order to examine the concentration‐dependent cytotoxic effect. Result: The adhesion rate of the HL‐7702 cells on both Pzein and Fzein was higher than that on collagen film. Cell viabilities were higher on both Pzein and Fzein than on films of PLA, PHB, PHBV, and collagen from fish skin. Zein can be degraded by both trypsin and collagenase, and the degradation product can enhance cell viability within a certain range of concentrations. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:The effects of strong acid and weak acid treatment on the carbon cloth (CC) surface assisted by plasma micromachining are investigated in terms of the morphology, chemical composition, and surface free energy. Different surface properties are observed and protein adsorption is investigated to assess the biocompatibility. The combined plasma and acetic acid treatment leads to more surface oxidation due to the large number of carboxyl groups on the CC surface and surface energy increase by 18.6 times. Since the effects of acetic acid are relatively mild, few morphological changes are found, but protein adsorption decreases by about 30% after the surface treatment compared to the untreated CC. The combination of plasma and weak acid treatment is not only simple and convenient, but also very effective in controlling protein adsorption on biomedical carbon cloth.

Abstract:In this study, transglutaminase-mediated alkylation modification of zein with octadecylamine (OA) was carried out to enhance the hydrophobicity of zein and the potential application of modified zein in the functionalization of textiles was evaluated. The reaction between OA and zein was demonstrated from the results of sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H MIR). The hydrophobicity of zein significantly increased and the secondary structure of zein slightly changed after alkylation modification. The alkylated zein imparted excellent hydrophobic function to cotton textiles with a water contact angle (WCA) value of 131.7° and the hydrophobicity was long-lasting. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed a coarse surface formed on cotton fabric due to the participation of OA. The hydrophobic functionalization of the cotton fabric with alkylated zein did not cause negative impact on the mechanical properties and air permeability of the fabric.

Abstract:Atmospheric-pressure cold plasma was applied to process the surface of heat-polymerized acrylic resin. Changes to the physical properties and early adherence of Candida albicans were investigated. Alternating current cold plasma with Ar/O2 as working gas was used. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to study the possible mechanism. Experimental results showed that after plasma treatment, the contact angle of acrylic resin significantly decreased. There were no significant differences in roughness, flexural strength and elasticity modulus, but microhardness was significant improved in the treated group. More importantly, the early adherence of Candida albicans on the surface was reduced after plasma treatment. Cold plasma seemed to be a promising and convenient strategy of preventing the early adherence of Candida albicans on acrylic resins, which would greatly benefit potential dental applications.
Enhancement of Biocompatibility of High-Transparency Zirconia Abutments with Human Gingival Fibroblasts Via Cold Atmospheric Plasma Treatment: an in Vitro Study

Abstract:The objective of this study was to explore the effects of cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) treatment on the biological behavior of human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) cultured on the surface of high-transparency zirconia. Two types of zirconia, 3Y-ZTP and 4Y-PSZ, were subjected to a CAP treatment for various treatment durations. Analyses of the physical and chemical properties of 3Y-ZTP and 4Y-PSZ were conducted using scanning electron microscopy, contact angle measurements, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, both before and after CAP treatment. The biological responses of HGFs on both surfaces were assessed using CCK-8 assay, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and real-time PCR. Initially, the oxygen and hydroxyl contents on the surface of 4Y-PSZ exceeded those on 3Y-ZTP. CAP treatment enhanced the surface hydrophilicity and the reactive oxygen species (ROS) content of 4Y-PSZ, while not altering the surface morphology. After CAP treatment, HGFs’ adhesion on 4Y-PSZ was superior, with more pronounced effects compared to 3Y-ZTP. Notably, HGFs counts and the expression of adhesion-related genes on 4Y-PSZ peaked following the CAP exposures for 30 s and 60 s. Consequently, this study demonstrates that, following identical CAP treatments, 4Y-PSZ is more effective in promoting HGFs adhesion compared to traditional 3Y-ZTP zirconia.
Functional Properties of Corn Byproduct-Based Emulsifier Prepared by Hydrothermal-Alkaline

Abstract:As consumers' interest in nature-sourced additives has increased, zein has been treated hydrothermally under alkaline conditions to prepare a nature-sourced emulsifier. The effects of mild hydrothermal-alkaline treatment with different temperatures or alkaline concentrations on the emulsifying properties of zein were investigated. The emulsification activity and stability index of zein hydrolysates increased by 39% and 164%, respectively. The optimal simple stabilized emulsion was uniform and stable against heat treatment up to 90 °C, sodium chloride up to 200 mmol/L, and pH values ranging from 6 to 9. Moreover, it presented excellent storage stability compared to commonly used food emulsifiers. The surface hydrophobicity caused the depolymerization of the tertiary structure of zein and the dissociation of subunits along with exposure of hydrophilic groups. The amino acid composition and circular dichroism results reveal that the treatment dissociated protein subunits and transformed α-helices into anti-parallel β-sheets and random coil. In conclusion, mild hydrothermal-alkaline treatment may well contribute to the extended functional properties of zein as a nature-sourced emulsifier.
Acetic-Acid Plasma-Polymerization on Polymeric Substrates for Biomedical Application

Abstract:: Cold plasma is an emerging technology offering many potential applications for regenerative medicine or tissue engineering. This study focused on the characterization of the carboxylic acid functional groups deposited on polymeric substrates using a plasma polymerization process with an acetic acid precursor. The acetic acid precursor contains oxygen and hydrocarbon that, when introduced to a plasma state, forms the polylactide-like film on the substrates. In this study, polymeric substrates were modified by depositing acetic acid plasma film on the surface to improve hydrophilic quality and biocompatibility. The experimental results that of electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) to show for acetic acid film, three peaks corresponding to the C–C group (285.0 eV), C–O group (286.6 eV), and C=O group (288.7 eV) were observed. The resulting of those indicated that appropriate acetic acid plasma treatment could increase the polar components on the surface of substrates to improve the hydrophilicity. In addition, in vitro cell culture studies showed that the embryonic stem (ES) cell adhesion on the acetic acid plasma-treated polymeric substrates is better than the untreated. Such acetic acid film performance makes it become a promising candidate as the surface coating layer on polymeric substrates for biomedical application.
