Abstract:In this work, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were inserted into the poly(3-hexylthiophene):(6,6)-phenyl-C61 butyric acid acrylic (P3HT:PC61BM) system as the third component. Therefore, organic solar cells (OSCs) based on the ternary active layer structure of P3HT:PC61BM:CQDs were prepared. The lattice distance of CQDs was performed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The excellent fluorescence emission and light absorption of CQDs were characterized by photoluminescence (PL) and UV–vis absorption spectra. The characterization results of atomic force microscope (AFM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) indicate that the introduction of CQDs in the active layer can improve the performance of the device but not significantly change the properties of the film. The device based on P3HT:PC61BM:CQDs ternary structure obtains a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.32%, which has a 32.8% increase compared to the reference device (2.50%). Besides, the best short-circuit current density attends to 18.9 mA/cm2, which is increased by 25% compared to the reference device. The improvement is attributed to the photoluminescence effect and the multiple exciton generation (MEG) effect of CQDs. This work provides a new method to improve the performance of organic solar cells.

Abstract:In this work, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) embedded between buffer layer and active layer and between active layer and cathode could significantly improve the performance of polymer solar cells (PSCs). The device was based on the ITO/PEDOT:PSS/CQDs/P3HT:PC 61 BM/CQDs/Al architecture. The power conversion efficiency of polymer solar cells with P3HT:PC 61 BM as active layer increased from 3.18 to 4.31%. And the results show that dual-interface modification of CQDs enables to enhance the electron mobility and hole mobility simultaneously which may be caused by improvement of contact property. In addition, CQDs shown the luminescent down-shifting effect, which was conducive to increase the light conversion of near-ultraviolet and blue-violet portions of sunlight, resulting in enhanced light capture capability of devices. This study provides a simple way to improve PSCs performance.

Abstract:The nickel phthalocyanine (NiPc) thin film has been explored for magneto-conductance and optoelectrical properties. The surface morphology and the opto-electrical properties of thin films of NiPc have been observed as a good candidate for the applications in polymer solar cells. The AFM images show an almost continuous surface over the studied area. The spin interaction, the disordering of the spins part, and their suitable models have been discussed by the magneto-conductance properties of the thin films. The relaxation time of carriers and traps filling phenomena with applied bias are discussed by the impedance spectroscopy. The thin films of NiPc have been introduced as a hole interface buffer layer in the standard structure of P3HT: PCBM solar cells. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the optimized solar cell with NiPc is ∼3.17% and the fill factor (FF) is ∼69%., these device parameters are higher (PCE increased by ∼65% and FF by ∼39%) as compared to the organic solar cells fabricated without NiPc thin films in the same batch. The improved performance of organic solar cells attributed due to lowering the series and shunt resistance.

Crown-Ether Functionalized Fullerene As A Solution-Processable Cathode Buffer Layer For High Performance Perovskite And Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:An alcohol-soluble fullerene derivative functionalized with a crown-ether end group in its side chain (denoted as PCBC) was synthesized and applied as a cathode buffer layer in planar p-i-n perovskite solar cells and bulk-heterojunction polymer solar cells. It is found that the introduction of the PCBC cathode buffer layer can greatly improve the photovoltaic performance of the planar p-i-n perovskite solar cells based on CH3NH3PbI3-xClx with power conversion efficiency (PCE) reaching 15.08%. In addition, the bulk-heterojunction polymer solar cells based on PBDTTT-C-T:PC70BM with the PCBC cathode buffer layer also showed a higher PCE of 7.67%, which is improved in comparison with the traditional device with the Ca/Al cathode. This work indicates that PCBC is a promising solution-processable cathode buffer layer material for application in both planar p-i-n perovskite solar cells and bulk-heterojunction polymer solar cells.

Abstract:An amine-based, alcohol-soluble fullerene [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid 2-((2-(dimethylamino)ethyl)(methyl)amino)-ethyl ester (PCBDAN) with 4-fold electron mobility of 6,6-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) is applied successfully as an acceptor and cathode interfacial material in polymer solar cells ITO/P3HT:PCBDAN/MoO3/Ag, where indium tin oxide (ITO) alone is used as the cathode and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) is used as a donor. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) depth profile confirming a favorable vertical phase separation is formed where P3HT is rich at the air/active blend interface and PCBDAN is rich at the buried interface with ITO and, thus, reduces the work function of ITO for use as the cathode. A moderate power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.1% is achieved. The slightly low PCE could be due to unoptimized morphology and low structure ordering of P3HT in the blends. However, this result demonstrates that the amine-based fullerene could be used as the acceptor and cathode interfacial material, which eliminated the multilayer device fabrication process. Because PCBDAN has high electron mobility, it would have potential applications in nano-structured organic solar cells. In the near future, alcohol-processable, high-efficient organic/polymer solar cells can be anticipated.
Application of a Water-Soluble Metallophthalocyanine Derivative As a Cathode Interlayer for the Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:A water-soluble metallophthalocyanine (MPc) derivative, 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octakis(2-trimethylaminoethylsulfanyl) zincylphthalocyanine octaiodine (ZnPc[S(CH2)2N-(CH3)3I]8) was synthesized and applied in polymer solar cells (PSCs). A power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.06% has been obtained when the ZnPc[S(CH2)2N(CH3)3I]8 was utilized as a cathode interlayer in the PSCs based on a blend of PCDTBT (poly[N-9″-hepta-decanyl-2,7-carbazole-alt-5,5-(4′,7′-di-2-thienyl-2′,1′,3′-benzothiadiazole)]) and PC71BM ([6,6]-phenyl C71 butyric acid methyl ester) as an active layer. Ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopic (UPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), contact angle (θ) and mobility measurements demonstrated that an introduction of ZnPc[S(CH2)2N(CH3)3I]8 between active layer and cathode decreased work function of cathode, increased hole mobility and facilitated a balance of electron and hole transport in the PSCs, resulting in a simultaneous improvement of open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current and fill factor.

Abstract:With the continuous development of solar cells, the perovskite solar cells (PSCs), whose hole transport layer plays a vital part in collection of photogenerated carriers, have been studied by many researchers. Interface transport layers are important for efficiency and stability enhancement. In this paper, we demonstrated that lithium (Li) and cobalt (Co) codoped in the novel inorganic hole transport layer named NiOx, which were deposited onto ITO substrates via solution methods at room temperature, can greatly enhance performance based on inverted structures of planar heterojunction PSCs. Compared to the pristine NiOx films, doping a certain amount of Li and Co can increase optical transparency, work function, electrical conductivity and hole mobility of NiOx film. Furthermore, experimental results certified that coating CH3NH3PbIxCl3−x perovskite films on Li and Co- NiOx electrode interlayer film can improve chemical stability and absorbing ability of sunlight than the pristine NiOx. Consequently, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs has a great improvement from 14.1% to 18.7% when codoped with 10% Li and 5% Co in NiOx. Moreover, the short-circuit current density (Jsc) was increased from 20.09 mA/cm2 to 21.7 mA/cm2 and the fill factor (FF) was enhanced from 0.70 to 0.75 for the PSCs. The experiment results demonstrated that the Li and Co codoped NiOx can be a effective dopant to improve the performance of the PSCs.

Abstract:Thermal stability of the ferricyanide (FC) and dichlorophenolindophenol (DCIP) reducing reactions was investigated in isolated membrane preparations and PS II particles with active water splitting system from the cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus. In a hypotonic medium, the thermostability was seen to be much higher for the DCIP than for the FC reduction reaction. After the addition of high concentrations of polyethylene glycol (Mwt = 4000) or sodium citrate to the medium, the FC reduction reaction appeared to be more temperature resistant. Data on the effects of temperature, DCMU and detergents on the electron transfer rate in PS II provide evidence suggesting that the different thermal stabilities of the two reactions are due to different physico-chemical properties of the electron donor sites to FC and DCIP. The data suggest that regions of contact between individual macromolecular complexes of the electron transport chain are the most labile sites of the photosynthetic apparatus. The role of the composition and properties of the intracellular medium on thermostability are emphasized.

Abstract:Solar cell devices are one of the most promising technologies for generating green energy. Forefront perovskite-based solar cells have increased worldwide hope for solving global warming issues. Tight bandgap formamidinium lead iodide (TB-FAPbI 3 ) perovskite as an active layer to absorb sunlight along with a desired electron transport layer (ETL) can produce efficient and stable perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, TB-FAPbI 3 with tin oxide (SnO 2 ) as an ETL was employed to fabricate PSCs. These PSCs recorded a low champion efficiency of 18.35%. A cobalt-doped SnO 2 layer was designed to increase the efficiency of TB-FAPbI 3 solar cells. The modified SnO 2 boosted the solar cell efficiency to 20.10% due to the improved conductivity of the ETL and increased charge transfer phenomena in the PSCs. From one side, electron transfer is facilitated at the ETL/perovskite interface. On another side, the reduced surface defects on the fabricated perovskite layer over the modified ETL diminish charge traps in the solar cell. In addition, cobalt doping does not hinder the light transmission from the SnO 2 into the perovskite layer. The modified SnO 2 assists in the formation of a more compact TB-FAPbI 3 layer and promotes the stability properties of PSCs. Graphical

Abstract:This study presents a novel approach to enhancing the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) by integrating Poly[(9,9-dihexenefluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-alt-co-(N,N'bis{p-butylphenyl}-1,4-diaminophenylene] (PDF-co-BBPB) (ADS252BE), a nitrogen-rich hole conducting polymer traditionally employed in organic light-emitting diode (OLEDs). The primary innovation lies in leveraging PDF-co-BBPB, with its applicability in polymer sensors, activators, and OLEDs. Hence, it can designed as an integrated circuit with perovskite hybrid solar cells as a power source. TD-DFT and experimental studies were done to estimate and verify the band gap of the PDF-co-BBPB polymer. SCAPS 3.3.1.1 was used to validate the solar cell design using PKPB blends. The solar cell construction involved sequential layering on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate: a compact titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) layer, a mesoporous TiO 2 layer infused with a PKPB blend, followed by a 2,2',7,7'-Tetrakis[N,N-di(4-methoxyphenyl)amino]-9,9'-spirobifluorene (Spiro-OMTAD) layer, and concluded with a gold top layer, each with precise thicknesses. We achieved a marked improvement in efficiency and stability through meticulous optimization of the perovskite and PDF-co-BBPB concentration in a dimethylsulfoxide: dimethylformamide (DMSO: DMF) solvent mix. Pure perovskite cells exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.216%, which declined to 6.683% over 30 days. In contrast, a 25% PDF-co-BBPB blended with perovskite had an initial PCE of 19.545% but remained at 18.95% even after 30 days, highlighting enhanced durability. A PSC with a concentration of 50% PDF-co-BBPB had a starting efficiency of 14.735%, which decreased to 7.849% after 30 days. This study highlights the effectiveness of PDF-co-BBPB in enhancing PSCs (perovskite solar cells) performance. Also, it presents opportunities for utilizing established polymers in perovskite technology to create solar cells that are both efficient and durable, especially in harsh environmental conditions and remote locations.

Abstract:Efforts to enhance the commercial viability of organic solar cells (OSCs) prioritize high power conversion efficiency. This study proposes precision tuning of the photoactive layer thickness in the nanoscale as an innovative method to boost efficiency. Utilizing PDTS-DTTFBT: PC71BM, an organic blend, as the active layer aims to capture a broad photon range while addressing optical losses due to low-energy photons rather than mere absorption. The study integrates PEDOT: PSS and molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) as hole transport layers, alongside C60, PC60BM, and ZnO electron transport layers. Meticulous analysis of their photon absorption, reflectance, charge carrier generation, and localized energy variance emphasizes their impact on the efficiency of PDTS-DTFFBT: PC71BM active films. Notably, incorporating MoO3 as the hole transport layer significantly mitigated losses and altered localized energy, culminating in an impressive 17.69% efficiency at an optimized blend thickness of 120 nm. Augmenting blend thickness directly boosts power conversion efficiency (PCE) and current density until reaching optimal thickness, while diminishing fill factor, with minimal effect on open-circuit voltage. These results highlight the efficacy of this methodology in enhancing the performance of organic solar cells.

Abstract:Two side chain conjugated polythiophene copolymer: poly[3-(5′-octylthienylenevinyl) thiophene]-thiophene (P1) and poly{3-[4-(2-ethyl-hexyloxy)-phenylvinyl]-thiophene}-thiophene (P2) were synthesized. Polymer photovoltaic solar cells using P1 and P2 as donor and a high LUMO energy level fullerene derivative indene-C60 bisadduct (IC60BA) as acceptor were demonstrated. The polymer solar cells (PSCs) based P1/IC60BA and P2/IC60BA showed enhanced open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.89 and 0.88V respectively, in comparison with that of P1/PC61BM and P2/PC61BM as 0.58 and 0.56V, respectively. The improved Voc of IC60BA as acceptor in PSCs is benefited from the higher LUMO energy levels of the C60 derivatives. The power conversion efficiency of the PSCs based on P1/IC60BA and P2/IC60BA were 0.32% and 0.35%, respectively.

Abstract:Tetra-nuclear Zinc(II) complex Zn4O(AID)(6) [AID = 7-azaindolate] is a wide band gap luminescent material that exhibits efficient emission matching the absorption spectra of organic donor materials such as polythiophene (P3HT). This work demonstrates polymer solar cells (PSC) based on P3HT: PCBM (phenylC61-butyric acid methyl ester) blend active layer with a Zn4O(AID)(6) cathode interfacial layer achieving a power conversion efficiency (PCE) significantly higher than that of the reference devices. The energy level and impedance spectroscopy analysis show that the Zn4O(AID)(6) cathode interfacial layer acts as an efficient exciton/ hole blocking layer, and reduces charge recombination rate with more efficient electron extraction. The Zn4O(AID)(6) interfacial layer also helps achieve longer lifetime of PSC devices. The improved efficiency and stability combined with low cost and nontoxicity of Zn4O(AID)(6) make it a promising cathode interfacial material for high-performance and stable PSC devices. An Interface Co-modification Strategy for Improving the Efficiency and Stability of CsPbI 3 Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Interface engineering is a simple and effective strategy for improving the photovoltaic performance and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, an interface co-modification strategy is proposed, using [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and 2-fluoro-1,4-phenylenediammonium iodide (2FPPD) to modify the electron transport layer (ETL)/perovskite (PVK) and the PVK/hole transport layer (HTL) interfaces, respectively. A series of characterizations demonstrate that the PCBM&2FPPD interface co-modification strategy effectively enhances the extraction and transport efficiency of carriers at the interface, passivates surface defects, inhibits the nonradiative recombination of carriers, and simultaneously inhibits ion migration. Moreover, this strategy improves the crystallinity and surface hydrophobicity of PVK and optimizes the energy level alignment of PSCs. As a result, all photovoltaic parameters are improved after optimization, where the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs has increased from 17.01% to 18.36%. Meanwhile, the optimized PSCs show excellent environmental stability, which can be stably stored in air (RH = 10–20%) for about 800 h.

Abstract:In this work, a double-buffer film of TiOx coated with CsOx (TiOx/CsOx) was solution prepared to be applied in poly(3-hexylthiophene):indene-C60 bisadduct (P3HT:ICBA) and P3HT:[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) inverted polymer solar cells (PSCs). Compared with TiOx films and CsOx films, the TiOx/CsOx double-buffer film exhibited a favorable energy-level alignment among TiOx, CsOx, and the electron acceptor of PCBM or ICBA a better surface morphology; and an enhanced wetting and adhesion property with a contact angle of 21.0°, leading to a higher electron mobility of 5.52 × 10(-3) cm(2) V(-1)·s(-1). Moreover, the P3HT:ICBA and P3HT:PCBM photovoltaic devices with the double-buffer film showed the best power conversion efficiency up to 5.65% and 3.76%, respectively. Our results not only present that the double-buffer film is superior than the single film of TiOx and CsOx, but also imply that the solution-processed film has a potential to be generally used in roll-to-roll processed organic photovoltaic devices.

Abstract:We demonstrate that 3,4,9,10 perylenetetracarboxylic bisbenzimidazole (PTCBI) and 1,4,5,8-napthalene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride (NTCDA) can function as electron conducting and exciton blocking layers when interposed between the acceptor layer and cathode. A low-resistance contact is provided by PTCBI, while NTCDA acts as an exciton blocking layer and optical spacer. Both materials serve as efficient electron conductors, leading to a fill factor as high as 0.70. By using an NTCDA/PTCBI compound blocking layer structure in a functionalized-squaraine/C60-based device, we obtain a spectrally corrected power conversion efficiency of 5.1±0.1% under 1 sun, AM 1.5G simulated solar illumination, an improvement of >25% compared to an analogous device using a conventional bathocuproine layer that has previously been shown to conduct electrons via damage-induced midgap states.

Abstract:Three amino-containing small-molecule organic materials-biuret, dicyandiamide (DCDA), and urea were successfully applied as novel cathode buffer layers (CBLs) in P3HT:PCBM bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells (BHJ-PSCs) for the first time, resulting in obvious efficiency enhancement. Under the optimized condition, the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of the CBL-incorporated BHJ-PSC devices are 3.84%, 4.25%, and 4.39% for biuret, DCDA, and urea, which are enhanced by similar to 15%, similar to 27%, and similar to 31%, respectively, compared to the reference poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) : [6,6]-phenyl-C-61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM) BHJ-PSC device without any CBL. The efficiency enhancement is primarily attributed to the increases of both short-circuit current density (J(sc)) and fill factor (FF), for which the enhancement ratio is found to be sensitively dependent on the molecular structure of small-molecule organic materials. The surface morphologies and surface potential changes of the CBL-incorporated P3HT:PCBM photoactive layers were studied by atomic force microscopy and scanning Kelvin probe microscopy, respectively, suggesting the formation of an interfacial dipole layer between the photoactive layer and Al cathode, which may decrease the energy level offset between the work function of Al and the lowest unoccipoed molecular orbital level (LUMO) of the PCBM acceptor and consequently facilitate electron extraction by the Al cathode. The difference in the enhancement effect of biuret, DCDA, and urea is due to their difference on the work function matching with P3HT:PCBM. Besides, the coordination interaction between the lone-pair electrons on the N atoms of the amino (-NH2) group and the Al atoms may prohibit interaction between Al and the thiophene rings of P3HT, contributing to the efficiency enhancement of the CBL-incorporated devices as well. In this sense, the different CBL performance of biuret, DCDA, and urea is also proposed to partially originate from the differences on their chemical structure, specifically the number of amino groups.
Polymer/Fullerene Blend Solar Cells with Cadmium Sulfide Thin Film as an Alternative Hole-Blocking Layer

Abstract:In this work, chemical bath-deposited cadmium sulfide (CdS) thin films were employed as an alternative hole-blocking layer for inverted poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) bulk heterojunction solar cells. CdS films were deposited by chemical bath deposition and their thicknesses were successfully controlled by tailoring the deposition time. The influence of the CdS layer thickness on the performance of P3HT:PCBM solar cells was systematically studied. The short circuit current densities and power conversion efficiencies of P3HT:PCBM solar cells strongly increased until the thickness of the CdS layer was increased to ~70 nm. This was attributed to the suppression of the interfacial charge recombination by the CdS layer, which is consistent with the lower dark current found with the increased CdS layer thickness. A further increase of the CdS layer thickness resulted in a lower short circuit current density due to strong absorption of the CdS layer as evidenced by UV-Vis optical studies. Both the fill factor and open circuit voltage of the solar cells with a CdS layer thickness less than ~50 nm were comparatively lower, and this could be attributed to the effect of pin holes in the CdS film, which reduces the series resistance and increases the charge recombination. Under AM 1.5 illumination (100 mW/cm²) conditions, the optimized PCBM:P3HT solar cells with a chemical bath deposited a CdS layer of thickness 70 nm and showed 50% power conversion efficiency enhancement, in comparison with similar solar cells with optimized dense TiO₂ of 50 nm thickness prepared by spray pyrolysis.

Abstract:Within organic solar cells (OSCs), the cathode interface layer (CIL) is indispensable for promoting the transport and extraction of charges. In this research, an environmentally friendly and cost-effective trans-cinnamic acid (TCA) is doped into PFN-Br to serve as the CIL in OSCs. The molecular structure and electronic structure of TCA were studied in this article using density functional theory (DFT) calculations executed with the Gaussian'16W software. The calculation results based on DFT indicate that TCA exhibits excellent planarity and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) matching with PFN-Br. Excellent planarity and matched energy levels are advantageous for charge transport and harvesting. Doping TCA into the PFN-Br cathode interface layer improved charge extraction efficiency, and reduced charge recombination phenomena. Consequently, this led to a notable amplification in the maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PBDB-T: IT-M -based non-fullerene devices, achieving an impressive 11.32%. This study furnishes an uncomplicated and cost-effective strategy for improving the PCE in OSCs.

Abstract:Firstly, multi-fold subphthalocyanine (SubPc) homo-tandem cells were fabricated. When complementary absorbing SubPc and chloroaluminum phthalocyanine (ClAlPc) were used to prepare tandem cells, both short circuit current (J(sc)) and fill factor (FF) are significantly improved relative to the SubPc double tandem cell. 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic bisbenzimidazole (PTCBI) as electron transporting layer (ETL) in the charge recombination zone (CRZ) achieves a much higher FF than bathocuproine (BCP) thus higher power conversion efficiency (eta(PCE)) in both the normal and reverse tandem cells, ascribed to the matched energy levels, very smooth film surface, and ohmic contact with Ag interlayer. The effect of Ag interlayer thickness was also investigated. Ultrathin Ag layer with isolated clusters is helpful for obtaining higher photocurrent in both PTCBI and BCP based CRZs, originating from a flatter interface, less optical loss, and a plasmonic effect induced absorption enhancement of C-60 in bottom subcell. By optical modeling for current matching, the performance of normal tandem cell is improved, exhibiting a high open circuit voltage of 1.80 V and an overall eta(PCE) of 3.49%. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V.
