Abstract:BackgroundAcne vulgaris affects up to 54% of Chinese adolescents. Combination therapy has become the recommended standard of care for acne.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of clindamycin (1%) and benzoyl peroxide (5%) (CDP/BPO) gel once daily vs. clindamycin (1%) (CDP) monotherapy gel twice daily in Chinese patients with mild to moderate acne.Methods1020 patients (aged 12-45 years) with mild to moderate acne were randomized (1 : 1); 1016 patients were treated with CDP/BPO (n = 500) or CDP (n = 516) for a 12-week treatment period. Efficacy assessments were performed at baseline, and at weeks 1, 2, 4, 8 and 12; and primarily included change in total lesion count (inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions), and proportion of patients with a minimum 2-grade improvement in Investigator's Static Global Assessment (ISGA) score. Patient safety and local tolerability were also evaluated.ResultsPatients in CDP/BPO group showed a greater per cent reduction in total lesion count compared with patients in CDP group at week 12 (delta = -0.05; 95% CI = -0.09, -0.02; P = 0.003); statistically significant reduction in lesion count was noted as early as week 1 and continued through week 12. A greater proportion of patients in CDP/BPO group showed a 2-grade improvement in ISGA score at week 12 compared with CDP group (30.2% vs. 22.7%; P = 0.018). Overall, the incidence of adverse events (AEs) was higher in the CDP/BPO group (14.4%) than in the CDP group (7.9%); the most commonly reported events were generally related to application site reactions (erythema, pruritus and swelling). Incidence of drug-related AEs was 8.6% in CDP/BPO group and 1.2% in CDP group. Both groups showed trends towards reduction in investigator and subject rated local tolerability scores.ConclusionCDP/BPO gel demonstrated superior efficacy over CDP gel along with acceptable safety and tolerability in Chinese patients with mild to moderate acne.Clinical Trials.gov number: NCT01915732

Abstract:Adult acne vulgaris affects up to 43-51% of individuals. While there are numerous treatment options for acne including topical, oral, and energy-based approaches, benzoyl peroxide (BPO) is a popular over the counter (OTC) treatment. Although BPO monotherapy has a long history of efficacy and safety, it suffers from several disadvantages, most notably, skin irritation, particularly for treatment naïve patients. In this prospective, randomized, controlled, split-face study, we evaluated the comparative efficacy, safety, and tolerability of a novel 3-step azelaic acid, salicylic acid, and graduated retinol regimen versus a common OTC BPO-based regimen over 12 weeks. A total of 37 adult subjects with self-reported mild to moderate acne vulgaris were recruited. A total of 21 subjects underwent a 2-week washout period and completed the full study with 3 dropping out due to product irritation from the BPO routine, and 13 being lost to follow-up. Detailed tolerability surveys were conducted at Week 4. Additional surveys on tolerability and product preferences were collected monthly, at Week 4, Week 8, and Week 12. A blinded board-certified dermatologist objectively scored the presence and type of acne lesions (open or closed comedones, papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts) at baseline, Week 4, Week 8, and Week 12. Patients photographed themselves and uploaded the images using personal mobile phones. Detailed Week 4 survey results showed across 25 domains of user-assessed product performance, the novel routine outperformed the BPO routine in 19 (76%) which included domains in preference (e.g. "I would use this in the future) and performance ("my skin improved" and "helped my acne clear up faster"). Users of the novel routine reported less facial redness, itching, and burning, though differences did not reach statistical significance. In terms of efficacy, both products performed similarly, reducing total acne lesions by 36% (novel routine) and 40% (BPO routine) by Week 12. Overall, accounting for user preferences and tolerability the novel routine was more preferred than the BPO routine in 79% of domains (22/28). Differences in objective acne lesion reduction were not statistically significant (p = 0.97). In a randomized split-face study, a 3-step azelaic acid, salicylic acid, and graduated retinol regimen delivered similar acne lesion reduction, fewer user dropouts, greater user tolerability, and higher use preference compared to a 3-step BPO routine based in a cohort of participants with mild-to-moderate acne vulgaris.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION Although acne is generally viewed as the result of a localized immune response at the pilosebaceous unit, it is a condition with multifactorial etiology. While conventional treatments have focused primarily on the four major pathogenic factors, nutraceuticals offer an alternative or complementary approach to address more systemic, intertwined mechanisms involved in acne pathogenesis. These include stress, diet and metabolism, skin and gut microbiome, hormonal fluctuations, oxidative stress, and immune function. Therapies which target these underlying mechanisms have gone largely unexplored as ways to address acne. Here, we present the results of a novel nutraceutical addressing these root causes in patients with non-cystic acne. DESIGN This was a 12-week single-arm prospective study for adults aged 18-50 with facial non-cystic acne ranging from mild to severe. Subjects discontinued all acne medications and topicals prior to the start of the study. Clinical assessments at baseline, week 4, 8 and 12 included IGA, inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesion counts, clinical grading of PIH/PIE, and texture. Bioinstrumentation included corneometer, tewameter and sebumeter measurements. Questionnaires on perception of efficacy were also completed. RESULTS Fifty-one subjects were recruited with 39 subjects completing the study. The majority were female (67%); racial/ethnic background was comprised of white/caucasian (41%), black (41%) and Asian (13%). Reasons for discontinuation were: lost to follow up/withdrawal (n=7), non-compliance (n=1) and adverse events (n=4). Significant and progressive improvements were seen starting at week 4 in IGA with 85% of subjects showing significant improvements for acne severity at week 12. All lesion counts decreased over the duration of the study with a significant proportion of subjects seeing improvements in inflammatory lesion counts (69%) and non-inflammatory lesion counts (87%). Overall, clinical grading of skin quality parameters progressively improved throughout the duration of the study. Notably PIH/PIE parameters significantly improved in nearly 80% of subjects by week 12. Sebumeter measurements improved significantly with a decrease of 25% as early as week 4 and remained lower than baseline throughout the duration of the study. Skin hydration as measured by the corneometer improved as well. Subjective impressions of improvement as measured by the questionnaire at 12 weeks showed subjects had ‘less breakouts’ (77%), ‘less oily skin’ (74%) and that their ‘acne had improved’ (87%). CONCLUSION The paucity of scientific evidence and lack of clinical data on the efficacy of CAM, including nutraceuticals, have limited their recommendation for use in acne. This proof-of-concept study showed improvements in acne and skin parameters. Although more studies are needed, these results offer insight into the potential benefits of nutraceuticals addressing underlying mechanisms that up to now, have gone largely unexplored. Addressing root causes that contribute to a generalized inflammatory response leading to the development of acne may prove to be an important step in expanding our toolbox in providing more options for patients and improving skin health.
Efficacy of a twice-daily, 3-step, over-the-counter skincare regimen for the treatment of acne vulgaris

Abstract:Background: Acne vulgaris (acne) is the most common skin disorder producing physical and emotional scars that can persist for years. An estimated 83% of acne sufferers self-treat, but there is lack of studies documenting the effectiveness of over-the-counter (OTC) acne treatment products. Objective: This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of an OTC, 3-step, anti-acne skincare regimen in treating acne and improving the appearance of red/inflamed facial skin. Methods: This 6-week, open-label clinical study included both genders aged between 12 and 35 years with mild-to-moderate acne. All subjects were required to have an acne score of 1-3 (Cook's acne grading scale: 0=clear to 7=very severe) and a moderate redness score of ≥2 (0=none and 4=severe). Subjects completed a 3-step facial treatment regimen every morning and evening using an OTC cleanser, toner, and acne treatment. Evaluations for effectiveness and safety were done at baseline and weeks 2, 4, and 6 using digital photographs (Visia-CR® digital imaging system) of the face and analyzed using Image-Pro® software for the grading of acne, red/inflamed skin, and the number and type of lesions. Results: Thirty subjects (12 males and 18 females) were enrolled (mean age of 19 years; range 12-34 years). This skincare regimen resulted in statistically significant improvements in acne grading scores after 2 weeks of use, with mean scores continuing to improve after 4 and 6 weeks of use (P<0.001). Statistically significant improvements from baseline in red/inflamed skin, open and closed comedones, and papules were detected at all time points and for nodules at week 6, compared to their respective baselines (P<0.05). Conclusion: This clinical study demonstrated the effectiveness of an OTC 3-step, anti-acne skincare regimen in significantly improving acne and the overall appearance of skin in the majority of subjects who had mild-to-moderate acne.

Efficacy and Tolerance of a Polymeric Surfactant Technology-Based Cleanser for Clinically Diagnosed Sensitive Skin

Abstract:Background: Cleansing is an important hygiene activity, necessary to prevent bacterial, fungal, yeast, and viral infection. However, in the presence of skin disease, cleansing can take on a new challenge: removing the sebum, sweat, externally applied substances, environmental debris, and organisms from the face without damaging the skin barrier. Since cleansers cannot easily distinguish between sebum and the intercellular lipids required to maintain skin integrity, unique cleansing technologies are necessary to provide mild cleansing for the many manifestations of sensitive skin. Objective: This 4-week clinical study aimed to evaluate the appropriateness of a cosmetic facial foaming gel cleanser with a polymeric surfactant technology in a diverse sensitive skin population. Method: 85 subjects with sensitive skin due to eczema/atopic dermatitis, rosacea, acne, or cosmetic intolerance syndrome were evaluated via investigator grading, self-assessment questionnaire, noninvasive measurements, and digital photography. Results: The foaming gel cleanser was well tolerated showing no significant increases in investigator-graded irritation endpoints. Sensitive skin subjects saw considerable reduction (P<0.05) in stinging, itching, burning, tightness, and overall sensitivity at 2 and 4 weeks. Improvements in smoothness, softness, clarity, radiance, and overall skin appearance, were observed by both the investigator and patients (P<0.05) at 2 and 4 weeks. Conclusion: The polymeric surfactant technology-based foaming gel cleanser provided a rich, foaming lather that felt gentle and left skin feeling comfortable. A double-blind, randomized, vehicle-controlled efficacy assessment study of a skin care formulation for improvement of mild to moderately severe acne

Abstract:Background: Inflammation, increased sebum production and P. acnes colonization are key factors in acne pathogenesis. Cosmetic formulations based on a combination of active compounds with in vitro proven anti-inflammatory, sebum regulating and P. acnes reducing properties may therefore contribute to improve the clinical signs and associated burden of disease. Objective: To provide in vivo proof-of-concept, we performed a 9-week, double-blind, randomized, vehicle-controlled study to assess the stand-alone efficacy of a skin care formulation containing licochalcone A, l-carnitine and 1,2-decanediol in volunteers with mild to moderately severe acne (10-25 inflammatory lesions) involving the face. Materials and methods: After enrolment followed by a 1-week standardization of the cleansing procedure, 60 volunteers aged 14-40 years (40 women and 20 men, mean age 22.4 years) were randomized into two groups of 30 volunteers each, to apply either the active formulation or the vehicle twice daily on the face for 8 weeks. Reduction in the lesion count, P. acnes and sebum levels, stratum corneum hydration, Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) and skin tolerability, assessed after 4 and 8 weeks were defined as outcomes. Results: Compared to baseline, the active formulation group showed at the end of the study a reduction in the mean total lesions count and papular lesions, significant reduction in the pustules (P < 0.05) and sebum levels (P < 0.01), marked reduction in P. acnes and improvement of DLQI. No significant changes in the respective parameters were found in the vehicle group. At the end of the study, greater reduction in the total lesion count, papules and pustules, P. acnes colonization, sebum production and more pronounced improvement of life quality in the active formulation group compared to the vehicle were found. Conclusions: Our results provide evidence for improved outcomes in result of the application of the active formulation compared to the vehicle from both physician's and patient's perspective.
Efficacy and Tolerability of a Novel Cosmetic and Over‐the‐Counter Facial Acne Regimen Versus a Prescription Treatment

Abstract:Background The SkinMedica Acne Treatment Platform (SM Regimen) was formulated to treat acne without overdrying the skin. We evaluated efficacy and tolerability of the SM Regimen (including a novel 1% salicylic acid Acne Clarifying Cleanser and 2% salicylic acid Acne Treatment Lotion) versus a prescription formulation (Rx Regimen; including adapalene 0.1%/benzoyl peroxide 2.5%) in a diverse population of adults with mild to moderate facial acne. Methods This single‐center, double‐blind, randomized study enrolled adults (18–45 years) with Fitzpatrick skin types (FST) I–VI. SM Regimen or Rx Regimen was applied topically to the entire face for 12 weeks. Assessments were conducted at 24 and 48 h and 4, 8, and 12 weeks. Results Subjects (SM Regimen, n = 31; Rx Regimen, n = 23) were primarily female (90.7%) with mean age of 28.6 years; 53.8% had FST IV–VI. Efficacy was comparable between regimens. The SM regimen resulted in significant improvements versus baseline in mean Investigator's Global Assessment of acne severity from 48 h through week 12 (p ≤ 0.001), as well as significant and sustained improvements from baseline in total acne lesion count, global postinflammatory hyperpigmentation/postinflammatory erythema, and oiliness. The SM Regimen was well tolerated at all time points, with mean scores below mild for all parameters; the Rx Regimen caused significantly more tightness/dry feeling at week 4 versus SM Regimen (p = 0.008). Subjects (> 96%) reported high satisfaction with the SM Regimen at all time points. Conclusions The SM Regimen reduced acne severity and skin oiliness, evening out skin tone without overdrying or irritating the skin.

Abstract:Objectives: Acne vulgaris is an extremely common condition that occurs mostly during adolescence. It often causes non-inflammatory lesions (open and closed comedones), inflammatory lesions (papules, pustules, and nodules), and varying degrees of scarring that leads to a negative impact on quality of life. This open label, single arm, and clinical study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of acne moisturizer on skin moisturization in adult subjects with mild-to-moderate acne. Material and Methods: An open label, single-arm, and clinical study was conducted on 36 enrolled healthy male and females aged 18–35 years having acne-prone skin and with mild-to-moderate acne. Acne moisturizer (Venusia Acne) was applied twice daily and safety and effectiveness of test product was assessed before application to post-application on day 15, day 30, day 45, and day 60 at the end of study. All enrolled subjects had undergone clinical evaluation by dermatologist, instruments evaluation, and subjective evaluation on various parameters. Results: Thirty-one ( n = 31) subjects completed all study visits. After using Acne Moisturizer for 60 days, statistically significant ( P < 0.0001) improvement from baseline was observed in skin moisturization. The product was also found effective in protecting skin barrier function ( P < 0.0001) by reducing trans-epidermal water loss. Assessment of prevention of appearance of new acne and acne reduction using Investigator’s Global Assessment (IGA) Scale for acne vulgaris by dermatologist shows significant improvement from baseline to each study visit and at the end of study. Statistically significant reduction ( P < 0.0001) in acne severity assessed by IGA was also observed. Moreover, significant reduction ( P < 0.0001) in skin sebum level, skin blemishes, skin redness, skin pigmentation, and facial pores was also observed as assessed by instruments and 3D image analysis system. Assessment of the subject satisfaction questionnaire and subject response index was also found in parity of the outcome. Furthermore, no adverse event was recorded during the study conduction. Conclusion: The results of this clinical study suggest that acne moisturizer helps in significantly improving skin moisturization when applied for 15 days onward. It is also safe and effective in aiding reduction of skin sebum level, skin blemishes, skin redness, skin pigmentation, and facial pores; it can be effectively used as an adjunct for management of mild-to-moderate acne prevention and acne reduction, while providing sufficient moisturization to the skin.

Abstract:Background Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin condition with a multifactorial pathogenesis. The clinical appearance of acne and its sequelae may differ according to phototypes. Data regarding the potential benefit of dermocosmetics (DC) regardless of phototype are lacking and assessing acne improvement can be difficult, given the lack of visual support in people with skin of colour. A DC regimen, combining a cleanser and a cream, both containing thermal spring water, has been developed for the management of mild‐to‐moderate acne, for all skin phototypes studied. Objectives To assess the efficacy and local tolerance of a DC routine in mild‐to‐moderate acne and to visualize the clinical improvement in all skin phototypes. Methods In an open‐labelled, multicentre clinical study, subjects of any phototype aged above 11 years and above with mild (N = 48, 55.2%) or moderate (N = 39, 44.8%) facial acne applied the DC twice daily for 56 days. No other acne care was allowed. Acne severity, as well as inflammatory and noninflammatory lesion counts, were assessed at baseline, Days 28 and 56. Photographs were taken using a novel imaging tool based on multimodal acquisition, to show clinical improvement over time. Results Eighty‐seven subjects, 41 adults and 46 adolescents, were included; 59.8% were female and were aged between 11 and 44 years. Abstract:The purpose of our studies was to verify efficacy and skin compatibility of a medical face care system containing 2% lactic acid (LA) as active ingredient in a specially designed vehicle (Follicle Targeting System) in adult subjects with mild acne vulgaris. The first study (46 patients) demonstrated superiority of 2% LA in comparison to 2% salicylic acid with respect to number of comedones and inflammatory lesions. The second study evaluated 90 patients receiving distinct combinations of face care products (Eucerin) Impure Skin, Hamburg, Germany), i.e. cleansing gel, facial tonic (2% LA) and cream gel (2% LA). All treatments were performed twice daily over a 12 weeks period. Lesion counts, cyanoacrylate biopsies and determination of quality of life by questionnaires were performed at different timepoints. A reduction of comedones by 56% corresponding to an 46% increase of quality of life index was demonstrated in patients applying cleansing gel, facial tonic and cream gel. For the first time we were able to show a significant improvement concerning the quality of life after using a new face care line. Especially adults with mild forms of acne may benefit from this effective skin care regimen.

Efficacy and Tolerability of HydraFacial Clarifying Treatment Series in the Treatment of Active Acne Vulgaris

Abstract:Objective: This 12-week, multicenter, open-label study investigated the efficacy and tolerability of the HydraFacial Clarifying Treatment for improving skin appearance in patients who present with acne vulgaris. Methods: Twenty eligible adult patients with mild-to-moderate acne were enrolled at one of two treatment sites in the United States and were to undergo six HydraFacial Clarifying Treatments, one every two weeks for 12 weeks. Treatment occurs in three steps: cleansing and peeling; suction to extract dead skin cells, sebum, and debris; and application of blue LED light. Acne severity was graded by investigators and by patients using the Global Acne Severity Score (GASS). Results: The proportion of patients with no acne or almost clear skin (GASS ≤1) at baseline versus final treatment increased from 20 to 65 percent per investigator assessment (p=0.0027), and from 5 to 55 percent per patient self-report (p=0.0016). At final treatment, more than 80 to 100 percent of both investigators and patients agreed or strongly agreed there was an improvement in skin appearance across multiple assessment parameters. Treatments were generally well tolerated. Limitations: Due to the nature of the treatment, blinding of neither investigators nor patients was feasible. Conclusion: The results presented here suggest that a series of six HydraFacial Clarifying Treatments improves overall skin appearance in patients with active acne.

Abstract:To The Editor: Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin disease involving the sebaceous glands. It has an incidence of approximately 9.4%, often occurring in adolescents. [1] The disease itself and the scars left after treatment can cause psychological stress in adolescents and seriously affect patients' quality of life. [2] At present, skin care products, either alone or in combination with medical drugs, have become important means for treating acne. This single-center, single-blind (clinician-blind), masculine-paralleled, randomized study (Registration number: ChiCTR2100051398) evaluated the efficacy and safety of a cream containing octyl salicylic acid, salicylic acid, linoleic acid, nicotinamide, and piroctone olamine (Duo+, La Roche-Posay, Paris, France) alone and in combination with benzoyl peroxide (BPO, Galderma, Paris, France) for the treatment of mild-to-moderate acne. The research was approved by the Ethics Committee of Shanghai Skin Disease Hospital, China (No. 2020-13 ke). All participants provided written informed consent.

Abstract:Background: Moderate to severe acne vulgaris is often treated with a combination of an oral antibiotic, topical antibiotic/retinoid, and benzoyl peroxide (BP), but data are limited on the efficacy of this and other combination regimens that incorporate both oral and topical therapies.<BR> Methods: Patients were required to be aged 12-30 years with moderate to severe acne (grades 3-4 acne on the Investigator's Global Assessment [IGA]) and deemed potential candidates for treatment with isotretinoin. Enrolled patients were given triple-combination therapy, defined in this study as oral minocycline HCl extended release 1 mg/kg QD, 6% BP foaming cloths used QD, and clindamycin phosphate 1.2%/tretinoin 0.025% gel applied QD, and were evaluated at baseline and weeks 2, 4, 8, and 12.<BR> Results: A total of 97 patients were enrolled in the study. At week 12, 89% of patients had at least a one-grade improvement from baseline IGA and 96% had at least a one-grade improvement from baseline Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale score. Mean ± SD in- flammatory, non-inflammatory, and total lesion counts decreased from baseline by 61.8% ± 38.3%, 48.8% ± 34.5%, and 56.5% ± 29.9%, respectively. The percentage of patients evaluated as candidates for isotretinoin by independent photographic review was 77% (69/90) at baseline and only 16% (14/90) at week 12. Treatment-related adverse events (AEs) occurred in eight of 97 (8%) patients. Triplecombination therapy was not associated with any serious AEs or AEs leading to discontinuation.<BR> Conclusion: Triple-combination therapy was well tolerated and substantially reduced facial acne lesion counts, with 84% of patients judged to no longer be candidates for isotretinoin therapy by study end. These data support the clinical observation that a triple-combination regimen incorporating oral minocycline (dosed by patient weight), BP foaming cloths 6% QD, and clindamycin phosphate 1.2%/ tretinoin 0.025% gel QD can substantially improve moderate to severe acne vulgaris.
Significant improvement in mild acne following a twice daily application for 6 weeks of an acidic cleansing product (pH 4)

Abstract:Background: Cleansing products for acne should remove excessive sebum, reduce acne-related bacteria and improve inflammation. Aims: The aim of the study was to investigate a topical cleansing product containing glycolic acid with pH 4 in mild acne vulgaris. Methods: Sixty patients were recruited for this open uncontrolled clinical trial. The tested product was exclusively applied twice a day for 6 weeks. The efficacy was judged by a dermatologist according to the Leeds score after 3 and 6 weeks. In addition, efficacy and tolerability were judged subjectively by physician and patients. Results: Mild acne improved significantly after 6 weeks (baseline: 0.699 vs. day 42: 0.602; P < 0.001). Efficacy and tolerability were judged better by physician as compared with patients' assessment. Conclusion: In this clinical trial, a topical cleansing product containing glycolic acid with pH 4 improved mild acne significantly following twice-daily application for 6 weeks as monotherapy.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Acne is a very common condition. Currently, there are relatively few studies available to help guidance-based decisions for its long-term management, especially studies with cosmetic care products. We have developed a skin care product dedicated to adult female acne.OBJECTIVES: Evaluate the efficacy and tolerance of the test product containing Myrtus communis extract and azelaic acid compared with a light moisturizing cream (LCM) in adult females in the acne maintenance phase.METHODS: A clinical study was conducted as a Brazilian, multicentre, randomized, investigator-blinded trial in adult females with clear or almost clear facial acne after anti-acne treatment. The test group (26 subjects) applied the test product and the comparative product group (27 subjects) applied LCM. Both groups applied the products twice daily on the whole face. Subjects were evaluated every 4 weeks over 16 weeks. Efficacy was evaluated according to acne relapse; Investigator's Global Assessment (IGA); acne lesions counting; AcneQoL questionnaire; Subject Global change Assessment (SGA) of acne severity; and the number of Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) and Post-Inflammatory Erythema (PIE) lesions. Tolerance was assessed according to a 5-point scale.RESULTS: Over 16 weeks, the number of acne relapse was more than double in the comparator compared to the test product group (eight subjects vs. three subjects respectively). There was no statistical difference in the evolution of the mean IGA from baseline between the two groups; however, 85% of subjects were assessed as clear or almost clear in the test product group and 67% in the comparative group.CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated the effectiveness topical application of the test product compared to LCM on acne severity in the maintenance phase of adult female acne. Efficacy results after 16 weeks suggested a trend to limit acne relapses and a benefit of the test product in maintaining long-term remission.

Abstract:Background: Acne vulgaris is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition of pilosebaceous units. The standard treatment involves topical and oral antibiotics, retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and other synthetic compounds, mostly associated with adverse effects. Hence, herbal skincare products are considered nowadays. Aim: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of Purifying Neem Face Wash (PNFW), an herbal skincare product in the prevention and/or reduction of mild-to-moderate acne. Methods: An open-label, single-center, single-arm, four-week clinical study was conducted with subjects having either mild-to-moderate acne or oily skin and non-existent acne. The performance of PNFW in the reduction and/or prevention of acne was detected by counting cutaneous inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions in each of the four visits. Sebum level and skin hydration of both cheeks were measured via sebumeter and corneometer, respectively. Self-assessment questionnaires were used to assess the subjects' responses toward PNFW. Results: Out of 120 study subjects, 79% and 72% showed either reduction or no new appearance of inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions, respectively, from baseline to Visits 3 and 4. Skin sebum level and skin hydration showed a statistically significant decrease (p < 0.001) and increase (p < 0.001), respectively, in Visits 3 and 4. Self-assessment surveys showed the satisfaction of the subjects about the product in terms of condition improvement, ease in use, and fragrance. Conclusion: The present study indicated the beneficial effect of the herbal ingredients (neem and turmeric) of Himalaya's PNFW in the prevention and reduction of mild-to-moderate acne with no side effects.

Abstract:Acne vulgaris is a common skin disorder that affects many people every year, especially the teenaged population. People with acne find the condition especially difficult to manage because of the disease's chronicity and variability in response to treatment. Acne is the result of pores clogged with shed skin cells combined with sebum in the hair follicle. Successful treatment of acne is important because acne has the potential to result in lasting physical and emotional scarring. For many years, physicians have agreed that although cleansing is not effective on its own, effective cleansing is an important part of any acne treatment regimen. However, patients have not been satisfied with the types of cleansers available. In addition to containing dyes and perfumes that can irritate and exacerbate acne, these cleansers often are too harsh and can result in excessive drying of the skin, which leads to overcompensation by the oil glands and ultimately to more oil on the surface of the skin. This study examined the use of a daily facial cleanser formulated for normal to oily skin in subjects with mild facial acne. The cleanser was studied for 2 weeks in the absence of additional treatments to eliminate the confounding effects of various treatments. Subjects were monitored for skin barrier function through transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and corneometry, sebum level, and lesion counts. The results of the study indicate that the facial cleanser is gentle and does not damage the skin barrier or result in sebum overcompensation; additionally, the cleanser is effective at deep-pore cleansing, which may help to manage some acne-associated symptoms.
