Abstract:This research article investigates the effects of object's vibration and fluid movement on the acoustics of subsonic flows, specifically focusing on the scattering of acoustic waves by a vibrating rigid plate submerged in uniform flow. The acoustic plane wave that impacts the plate, coupled with its oscillatory motion, causes a disruption in the fluid medium. This disturbance, in turn, gives rise to a Rayleigh wave that propagates along the boundary separating the plate and the fluid. The study uses the Wiener‐Hopf technique to analytically model the acoustic scattering by a rigid barrier of finite dimensions and analyze the relationship between acoustics and structures. The method involves applying Fourier transformations to the governing boundary value problem and resolving the Wiener‐Hopf equations using the factorization theorem, Liouville's theorem, and analytical continuation. The integral equations of scattered potential computed asymptotically are used to describe the acoustic characteristics of structures and their interaction with fluid flow in subsonic conditions. The findings of the study reveal the sharp peaks of the scattered potential at certain angles with more oscillation in high subsonic flow. Also, increasing the frequency of the vibrating plate increases the amplitude of the scattered potential but is attenuated in mean flow whereas enhancing plate vibrations amplifies the scattered sound, and it is more vibrant in high subsonic flow than mean flow and no fluid flow. This research has applications in noise reduction, aeronautical engineering, and the detection of underwater structures using acoustic waves and micropolar elastic media.

Abstract:Properly designed porous materials can provide damping equivalent to conventional viscoelastic dampers by the dissipation of the evanescent wave energy in the vibrating structure's acoustical near-field. At the same time, these materials possess advantages such as light weight and effective sound absorption. Thus, there are potential benefits with respect to cost and weight saving in automotive and aerospace applications by using porous layers as multi-functional noise and vibration control solutions. The intention in this article is to provide a concise summary of the methods and major findings previously presented in an extensive set of publications and conference presentations. In that work, porous media, such as fibers and foams, were designed to serve as treatments for various vibrating structures to examine their damping effectiveness. Both analytical modeling and numerical simulation based on finite element methods were involved depending on the complexity of the structure. Specifically, a Fourier transform-based computational method was introduced as the key step to allow accurate prediction of a panel's spatial response. The analytical model was further developed into an efficient software toolbox, so that parametric studies could be conducted to identify the optimal properties for a porous layer to provide the maximum damping within a target frequency region, based on which near-field damping design concepts are summarized. Key findings include the observation that the addition of bulk elasticity to the solid phase of the porous medium improves damping performance compared to equivalent limp treatments.

Acoustic scattering by a finite rigid plate with a poroelastic extension

Abstract:The scattering of sound by a finite rigid plate with a finite poroelastic extension interacting with an unsteady acoustic source is investigated to determine the effects of porosity, elasticity and the length of the extension when compared to a purely rigid plate. The problem is solved using the Wiener–Hopf technique, and an approximate Wiener–Hopf factorisation process is implemented to yield reliable far-field results quickly. Importantly, finite chord-length effects are taken into account, principally the interaction of a rigid leading-edge acoustic field with a poroelastic trailing-edge acoustic field. The model presented discusses how the poroelastic trailing-edge property of owls’ wings could inspire quieter aeroacoustic designs in bladed systems such as wind turbines, and provides a framework for analysing the potential noise reduction of these designs.

Abstract:Stiffened structures are widely used in aeronautics, marine and rail industries. When stiffeners are integrated into host structures, so-called Bloch–Floquet waves are generated due to interactions between the host's flexural waves and the stiffeners' flexural and torsional waves. It is reported in the literature that these waves are often the source of undesirable noise and vibrations when the stiffened structure is excited by a force. To mitigate unwanted noise and vibrations from the stiffened structures, this study proposes to replace common rectangular stiffeners with acoustic black hole (ABH) stiffeners. To do this, a semi-analytical model is initially developed in the wavenumber domain to predict the forced vibroacoustic response of a 2D fluid-loaded infinite plate with stiffeners on one side. In the proposed model, the stiffeners are characterised by their translational and rotational dynamic stiffnesses which can be estimated by a finite element method (FEM). These dynamic stiffnesses are then coupled with the analytical formulation of the fluid-loaded plate to obtain the expressions of the spectral displacement and radiated pressure. Comparisons of the results in terms of the plate's mean quadratic velocity and radiated sound power for the rectangular and ABH stiffeners show that by using the ABH stiffeners instead of the conventional stiffeners, one can significantly reduce the vibroacoustic response of light/heavy fluid-loaded plates.

Numerical vibroacoustic analysis of plates with constrained-layer damping patches

Abstract:A numerical vibroacoustic model that can manage multilayered plates locally covered with damping patches is presented. All the layers can have an on-axis orthotropic viscoelastic behavior. Continuity of displacements and transverse shear stresses at each interface is enforced, which permits to write the entire displacement field in function of the displacements of the--common--first layer, leading to a two-dimensional plate model. The problem is then discretized by Rayleigh-Ritz's method using a trigonometric basis that includes both sine and cosine functions in order to treat various boundary conditions. The excitation can be of mechanical kind (concentrated or distributed forces) or of acoustic kind (plane wave of any incidence, diffuse field, etc.). The model permits to compute different vibroacoustic indicators: the mean square velocity of the plate, the radiation efficiency, and the transmission loss. Comparisons between the present model and numerical results from literature or finite element computations show that the model gives good results in both mechanical and acoustical aspects. Then, a comparison of the effects of different distributions of patches is presented. The role of the surface covering rate is first discussed, followed by a study involving different geometries for the same surface covering rate.

Abstract:Experimental data on the damping properties of a simply supported aluminium plate mounted in a rigid baffle, and separated by an air gap from a slab of open-celled plastic foam, are presented along with numerical results from two independent analyses. The first is a coupled modal analysis incorporating a finite-thickness layer of absorbent and a baffle of finite dimensions. The second is a plate radiation model with an infinite baffle and an absorbent of semi-infinite extent. Numerical predictions from the two models and the experimental data are generally in reasonable agreement, and the roles of both the plate/absorbent spacing and the mode of vibration of the plate are highlighted. It is shown, for example, that the loss factor of the plate is very strongly dependent on the air space and that the damping varies quite markedly between different plate modes. The damping is also strongly dependent on the steady flow resistivity of the porous medium. Predictions of the power dissipation per unit volume in the absorbent (with no air gap) and of the intensity distribution over the plate surface (with an air gap) illustrate some interesting features of the behaviour of the system.

Abstract:Modeling methodologies based on state-of-the-art and classic theories of acoustics have been developed to provide a comprehensive toolbox, which can be used to model multilayer systems that involve acoustical and/or damping treatments, and to optimize these treatments' performance by designing their geometrical structures. The objective of this work was to understand, predict and optimize conventional sound absorbing porous media's near-field damping performance, so that automotive and aerospace industries can take full advantage of layered porous treatments' lightness and multi-functionality: i.e., absorption of airborne sound and reduction of structure-borne vibration, for noise control applications. First, acoustical models that include the Transfer Matrix Method and the Arbitrary Coefficient Method were developed to build connections between the bulk properties and acoustical properties of porous media when coupled into layered systems. Given a specified layered system consisting of a vibrating panel and a porous damping treatment, the acoustics models were then incorporated into the Near-field Damping model to predict the acoustical near-field and spatial response of the panel, based on which the near-field damping performance can be evaluated for a limp or an elastic porous layer when applied on different structures including an infinitely-extended panel, a partially-constrained panel, an aircraft fuselage-like structure and a vehicle floor pan-like structure. Furthermore, the relations between the material's microstructural details and bulk properties were established via an Air-Flow Resistivity model for porous media that are made of fibers, and the optimal fiber size that provides the largest damping for certain vibrating structures was identified. Relatively large fibers were found to be better at reducing lower frequency vibrations; fibers made of polymer were found to have manufacturing benefits over fibers made of glass to achieve equivalent optimal damping performance; and elastic fibers were found to have both manufacturing and damping advantages over limp fibers.

Abstract:Hydroacoustic radiation from submarine power compartments has been the focus of research for many years. In this work, a ring-stiffened conical shell with bases is employed as the target model. The self-factors of viscoelastic damping, such as the damping thickness and damping location, are selected to study their effect on the underwater acoustic radiation, which will give a better understanding of the optimal scheme for applying damping. Firstly, based on a combination of finite element method (FEM) and boundary element method (BEM), the underwater vibration and acoustic radiation of the whole structure are analyzed. Secondly, taking a clamped-free sandwich beam as an example, through comparison with the published numerical data, the present damping application method and mesh density are verified. Finally, the influence of viscoelastic damping parameters on acoustic radiation is studied. The results show that the viscoelastic damping thickness has a significant influence on the amplitude of radiated noise but does not change the distribution of the acoustic field. Furthermore, the damping on the web may achieve the best vibration damping effect in this work.
Active damping of sound transmission through an electrorheological fluid-actuated sandwich cylindrical shell

Abstract:An exact model is proposed for sound transmission through a sandwich cylindrical shell of infinite extent that includes a tunable electrorheological fluid core, and is obliquely insonified by a plane progressive acoustic wave. The basic formulation utilizes Hamilton’s variational principle, the classical and first order shear deformation shell theories, the Kelvin–Voigt viscoelastic damping model (for the electrorheological fluid-core layer), and the wave equations for internal/external acoustic domains coupled by the proper fluid/structure compatibility relations. The Fourier–Bessel series expansions are used to arrange the governing (coupled) system equations in state-space form. The classical Sliding Mode Control law is then applied to semi-actively reduce sound transmission through the composite cylinder by smart variation of stiffness and damping characteristics of the electrorheological fluid-core actuator layer according to the control command. Numerical results present both the uncontrolled and controlled sound transmission loss spectra of the sandwich cylindrical shell at three angles of incidence for three distinct sets of material input parameters that represent the electric-field dependency of the complex shear modulus of the electrorheological fluid-core layer. The superior soundproof performance of electrorheological fluid-based sliding mode control system in avoiding the highly detrimental sound transmission loss dips occurring throughout the critical resonance and coincidence regions is demonstrated. Likewise, remarkable enhancements in the sound insulation characteristics of the electrorheological fluid-actuated structure utilizing the first or second electrorheological fluid material model are achieved within the stiffness-controlled region, especially at lower frequencies in near-grazing incidence situation. A number of limiting cases are introduced and validity of the formulation is confirmed by comparison with the available data.

Stability Analysis of Coupled Structural Acoustics PDE Models under Thermal Effects and with no Additional Dissipation

Abstract:In this study we consider a coupled system of partial differential equations (PDE's) which describes a certain structural acoustics interaction. One component of this PDE system is a wave equation, which serves to model the interior acoustic wave medium within a given three dimensional chamber $% \Omega $. This acoustic wave equation is coupled on a boundary interface ($% \Gamma _{0}$) to a two dimensional system of thermoelasticity: this thermoelastic PDE comprises a structural beam or plate equation, which governs the vibrations of flexible wall portion $\Gamma _{0}$ of the chamber $\Omega $; the elastic dynamics is coupled to a heat equation which also evolves on $\Gamma _{0}$, and which imparts a thermal damping onto the entire structural acoustic system. As we said, the interaction between the wave and thermoelastic PDE components takes place on the boundary interface $% \Gamma _{0}$, and involves coupling boundary terms which are above the level of finite energy. We analyze the stability properties of this coupled structural acoustics PDE model, in the absence of \ any additive feedback dissipation on the hard walls $\Gamma _{1}$ of the boundary $\partial \Omega $. Under a certain geometric assumption on $\Gamma _{1}$, an assumption which has appeared in the literature in conection with structural acoustic flow, and which allows for the invocation of a recently derived microlocal boundary trace estimate, we show that classical solutions of this thermally damped structural acoustics PDE decay uniformly to zero, with a rational rate of decay.

Abstract:This paper first suggests a composite structure with periodic additive acoustic black holes (ABH) to absorb vibrations from plates. Different from conventional embedded ABHs, this additive configuration no longer compromises structural integrity. The suggested periodic structure forms a compact acoustic functional material. To analyze the vibration behavior of this coupled structure, we establish a theoretical model employing the Gaussian expansion method (GEM) and the nullspace method (NSM), and it is validated through finite element simulations. Subsequently, we develop a two-dimensional wave and Rayleigh–Ritz method (WRRM) to compute complex dispersion curves, with the imaginary part predicting absorption capability. Our findings reveal that the local resonance eigenmodes of the ABH plate with high loss factors dominate the damping effect, overshadowing the role of Bragg scattering. Furthermore, the introduction of a damping layer proves highly effective in absorbing local vibrations across a wide frequency band. Moreover, we then conduct parametric analyses on various aspects, including ABH order, central thickness, ABH plate thickness, and ABH radius. Notably, the latter two parameters exert a significant influence on damping performance, primarily due to the added mass they introduce. Finally, we examine a finite plate consisting of a 4 × 4 cell arrangement. This composite structure demonstrates substantial modal loss factors when local modes are activated. Moreover, in forced vibration tests, the additive ABHs prove highly effective in mitigating vibrations within the host plate.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the structural-acoustic analysis of a coupled sandwich cylindrical shell and nonlinear spring-mass-damper system immersed in an infinite acoustic medium. The restoring force of each spring in the spring-mass-damper system is assumed as a general polynomial function of the spring deformation, from which the nonlinear quadratic, cubic and quartic springs can be directly recovered. A modified variational approach is employed to formulate the nonlinear dynamics model of the coupled structural system, and the exterior acoustic fluid is computed by a time-domain Kirchhoff boundary integral formulation. The structural and acoustic models are coupled together through the compatibility conditions on their interface. The proposed model is validated by comparing the solutions obtained from the finite element/boundary element method and those available in the literature. Very good agreement between the predicted results and the reference solutions is achieved. Individual contributions of circumferential wave modes of the sandwich cylindrical shell to the vibration and acoustic responses of the coupled nonlinear structural system are examined. The effects of the amplitude and excitation frequency of the external loads, and different types of nonlinear springs (including the quadratic, cubic and quartic nonlinear springs) on the vibration and sound radiation behaviors of the structural system are investigated. Abstract:This work is concerned with numerical studies on nonlinear vibration and acoustic radiation behaviors of hyperelastic plates made of rubber material. Considering both the geometric and material nonlinearity of the rubber material, structural model of the hyperelastic plate is developed based on the nonlinear finite element method and the Mooney-Rivlin constitutive model. Acoustic waves in an inviscid and compressible fluid perturbed by the in-plane vibrations of the hyperelastic plate are governed by a set of first-order linearized partial differential equations. A fourth-order dispersion-relation-preserving (DRP) finite difference scheme is utilized to compute numerical solutions of the acoustic pressure responses. The structural-acoustic interface between the hyperelastic plate and exterior fluid is constructed through a robust ghost-cell sharp-interface immersed boundary method (IBM) of high numerical stability such that the compatibility conditions on the interface can be satisfied implicitly, although the structural Lagrangian meshes of the rubber plate and the fluid Eulerian grids are not matched. Several numerical examples are designed to check the effectiveness, convergence, and availability of the numerical structural-acoustic coupling model. Based on the numerical model, nonlinear vibro-acoustics response behaviors of the hyperelastic rubber plate subject to uniform dynamic loads are analyzed. Relevance between the in-plane vibrations of the plate and the spatial distribution of the acoustic pressure in exterior fluid is revealed. Effects of the excitation frequency and amplitude of the external loads on the nonlinear vibro-acoustics behaviors of the hyperelastic plate are discussed. Radiation directivity patterns of the fundamental and high-order components show significant differences, and may change dramatically against the excitation frequency and amplitude. In addition, the influences of the geometric and material nonlinearity of the hyperelastic plate on the higher-order vibro-acoustics responses are evaluated.

Abstract:An analytical model is developed for examining the vibro-acoustic properties of a fluid-loaded plate reinforced by periodic ribs of finite width. This model is used to understand the frequency filtering properties of the flexural wave and the structural-borne sound wave of the ribbed plate under different fluid loading conditions. The relationships between the flexural waves and the related sound radiation in their pass-bands due to the filtering effect of the periodic ribs are specifically investigated. The dispersion relations of structural and radiated waves of the plate due to the periodic configuration of the ribs are used to explain the changes in the vibration and sound radiation response.
Vibration damping using a spiral acoustic black hole

Abstract:This study starts with a simple question: can the vibration of plates or beams be efficiently reduced using a lightweight structure that occupies a small space? As an efficient technique to damp vibration, the concept of an acoustic black hole (ABH) is adopted with a simple modification of the geometry. The original shape of an ABH is a straight wedge-type profile with power-law thickness, with the reduction of vibration in beams or plates increasing as the length of the ABH increases. However, in real-world applications, there exists an upper bound of the length of an ABH due to space limitations. Therefore, in this study, the authors propose a curvilinear shaped ABH using the simple mathematical geometry of an Archimedean spiral, which allows a uniform gap distance between adjacent baselines of the spiral. In numerical simulations, the damping performance increases as the arc length of the Archimedean spiral increases, regardless of the curvature of the spiral in the mid- and high-frequency ranges. Adding damping material to an ABH can also strongly enhance the damping performance while not significantly increasing the weight. In addition, the radiated sound power of a spiral ABH is similar to that of a standard ABH.
Promising Methods for Reducing the Vibrations of Aircraft Structures under Acoustic Excitation

Abstract:Tests for measuring the vibration characteristics of a typical fuselage panel of a regional aircraft, as well as the board, flap, and wing structures of a real aircraft with various vibration damping sets, have been carried out in reverberation chambers and on a full-scale testbench. Under the conditions of acoustic excitation for a model panel and real aircraft structures, the efficiency has been determined for the following vibration reducing means: the change of the boundary conditions and stiffness of frames, the lining of a structure with single-sided vibration-damping sandwiches and sheet vibration-absorbing materials VTP-1V and SKLG-6020M, and the use of stringer and frame simulators, including their combinations with dual-sided vibration damping sandwiches. It is shown that a significant decrease in structural vibrations can be attained within a broad range of frequencies by using a combination of different methods. At low frequencies, an effective tool is the conversion of long-wave frame vibration forms into shorter-wave ones. In the region of medium frequencies, structural vibrations can be efficiently reduced by single-sided sandwiches, as well as stringer simulators together with dual-sided sandwiches. In the region of high frequencies, the most effective means is the lining of a structure with sheet vibration-absorbing coatings.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the numerical analysis of structural and acoustic behaviors of composite laminated plates under the action of moving loads. The plate is assumed to be immersed in a compressible inviscid fluid. The moving loads may traverse on the surface of the plate along arbitrarily-shaped curved trajectories. The structural model of the plate is formulated using a modified variational principle combined with a multilevel partitioning procedure (i.e., individual layer and layer segment). The exact 3-D theory of elasticity is employed for the structural modeling in order to accommodate the analysis of arbitrarily thick composite plates, and the displacement field of each layer segment is approximated by Chebyshev orthogonal polynomials. A time-domain boundary element method based on Kirchhoff integral formulation is adopted to couple with the structural model of the plate to evaluate the radiated sound pressure of the fluid. Assessment of the accuracy of the present method is made by comparing the solutions attained from the coupled finite element/boundary element method. The effects of the velocities and trajectories of the moving loads on the dynamic responses of composite sandwich plates as well as the far-field radiated sound are investigated. The modal contributions to the vibro-acoustic responses of the plates are also discussed.

Abstract:This paper is focused on the nonlinear aerothermoelastic analysis of composite laminated panels having non smooth frictional boundaries and simultaneously subject to combined supersonic aerodynamic, thermal and random acoustic loads. The Reddy's third-order shear deformation plate theory with zig-zag effects is employed to formulate the structural model of the panels. The von Karman strain relationships are considered in order to take into account the geometrical nonlinearities of the panels. The aerodynamic loads and the random acoustic loads acting on the panel are characterized by the quasi-steady first-order piston theory and the Gaussian band limited white noise, respectively. A four-node finite element is developed to establish the aerothermoelastic models of the panels, and the non-smooth frictional boundaries of the panels are represented by a number of macro-slip friction models. The effects of the aerodynamic forces, acoustic loads, thermal forces and the spatial location of the frictional boundaries on the nonlinear aerothermoelastic responses (including the stable limit cycle oscillations, chaotic and random vibration responses) of composite laminated panels are examined. The effects of non-uniform distribution of the temperature on the aerothermoelastic behaviors of composite laminated panels are discussed.
