Abstract:Cu-matrix nanocomposites reinforced with in-situ TiC were fabricated using long-term ball milling and hot pressing. Their hardness and electrical conductivity simultaneously increased with the enlargement of ball milling time after 84 h. The novel findings provide a potentially competitive strategy for developing the high-performance Cu-based composite materials. The improved electrical properties were due to the fraction increase of micro-sized pure Cu areas. The enhanced hardness resulted from the formation of composite areas that contained the nano-sized Cu and TiC. Such microstructure depended on the refinement and more homogeneous mixing of Cu and Ti nanopowders caused by enlarging ball milling time. (C) 2018 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Elemental powders of Al, Cu, Mg and x wt.% CNT (x: 0-2.5) were blended and milled in the high-energy ball mill for 4 h. Milled powders of Al alloy-CNT composites were subsequently consolidated by upset forging followed by hot extrusion. Even though the particle size of milled powders of Al alloy-CNT composites decreased with the addition of CNT, there is no significant effect on crystallite size. Raman spectra indicated that the nanocrystalline structure of CNT is retained after milling. Yield and ultimate tensile strengths increased with CNT content and Al alloy-2.5 wt.% CNT exhibited an enhancement of 56 and 73%, respectively, when compared to Al alloy in solutionized condition. The improvement in mechanical properties of Al alloy-CNT composites is due to ultra-fine grain size, finer second-phase precipitates and uniform dispersion of CNT.

Abstract:Homogeneous distribution of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in aluminum matrix composites and optimization of the MWCNTs-aluminum interfacial strength are challenging for MWCNTs/Al metal-matrix composites (MMCs). Here, in order to improve the wettability and the interfacial bonding between MWCNTs and aluminum matrix alloy, a uniform nickel layer was created on MWCNTs by electroless plating. Hybrid preforms comprising of aluminum borate whisker (ABOw) and MWCNTs with/without nickel coating were prepared. It was found that the presence of ABOw and nickel coating ensured the homogeneous distribution of MWCNTs in composites. The presence of the nickel coating on MWCNTs also helps in decreasing the porosity of composite prepared by squeeze casting technique. Compared with ABOw/2024Al and ABOw + MWCNTs/2024Al composites, improvements in elongation and hardness were obtained in the ABOw + MWCNTs(Ni)/2024Al composite, which may be attributed to the reduced porosity, increased interfacial bonding strength and the crack deflection induced by dispersed MWCNTs. However, the addition of MWCNTs did not change the main fracture mechanism: ABOw break and ABOw-aluminum interfacial de-bonding dominated the fracture process in ABOw and MWCNTs(Ni) reinforced composites.
Improvement of interfacial interaction and mechanical properties in aluminum matrix composites reinforced with Cu-coated carbon nanotubes

Abstract:Controlling the interfacial interaction is a prerequisite for the preparation of aluminum matrix composites reinforced by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with high performance. In this paper, Cu-coated CNTs fabricated by the compound reduction method were applied to control the interfacial interaction between carbon nanotubes and aluminum matrix for improving the interfacial bonding and mechanical properties of aluminum matrix composites. The microstructure, interfacial structure, interfacial interaction, and mechanical properties of Cu-coated composite were studied in detail. The in-depth study results show that Cu nanoparticles act as a bridge connecting the carbon nanotubes and matrix and forming Al2Cu intermetallic, which is in favour for better dispersion of carbon nanotubes and interfacial bonding. In addition, Cu nanoparticles are preferentially deposited at the defects of carbon nanotubes to repair the defects and inhibit the formation of brittle Al4C3 phases. As a result, Cu-coated composite displays the superior strength with yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of 203 MPa and 287 MPa, which are 45% and 38% higher than those of matrix (140 MPa and 207 MPa) and 8% and 12% higher than those of uncoated composite (188 MPa and 256 MPa), respectively. The introduction of Cu nanoparticles can significantly improve the interfacial bonding strength of Cu-coated composite, ensuring the effective transfer of load from the matrix to carbon nanotubes and exerting its strengthening and toughening effect.

Abstract:In this paper, MWCNTs-GN hybrid reinforcement was prepared by wet ball milling process. The MWCNTs-GN/Al composites were prepared by high-energy ball milling and vacuum hot-pressure sintering. The MWCNTs-GN hybrid reinforcements and MWCNTs-GN/Al composites were characterised by SEM and TEM, and the synergistic effects of carbon nanotubes and graphene on the mechanical properties of the aluminium matrix composites were investigated by hardness and friction wear tests. The results show that the 0.5 wt.% MWCNTs-GN/Al composite has the best mechanical properties, with a hardness of 116.3 MPa which is 33.9% higher than that of pure aluminium, and the frictional properties of the MWCNTs-GN reinforced aluminium matrix composites have a lower coefficient of friction than that of pure aluminium. After the addition of more than 5 wt.% of the composite reinforcing phase, the wear rate increased slightly due to the reduced densities of the MWCNTs-GN/Al composites.

Abstract:This study presents an experimental investigation on Al matrix composites (AMCs) reinforced titanium carbide (TiC) nano-particles produced by five accumulative roll bonding cycles and three cryorolling (CR) cycles. The microstructures and mechanical properties of composites were studied. The results exhibited consequentially improved mechanical properties for processed Al/TiC AMCs as the number of rolling cycles increased. The presence of TiC in Al matrix showed the combination of elastic modulus, hardness, yield, and ultimate tensile stress of 84 ± 2GPa, 86 ± 3HV, 240 ± 12MPa, and 308 ± 15MPa, respectively. The dispersion of TiC particles was improved with increasing in the number of rolling cycles, resulting in a decrease in porosity between the matrix and reinforcement. This phenomenon was attributed to the breakup of particle clusters and their subsequent uniform dispersion within the Al matrix under CR. The composite microstructure shows uniform TiC particle distribution and grain refinement in the Al matrix, which all contribute to the enhanced mechanical properties.

Abstract:Aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) reinforced by CNTs as lightweight structural materials gain extensive attention. However, the crucial issue limited its application breadth is the poor interfacial bonding between the matrix and CNTs. In this paper, novel TiO2 nanoparticles-coated CNTs (TiO2 @CNTs) fabricated by the alcohol-thermal method were used as the reinforcement to prepare AMCs via high-intensity ultrasonic-assisted casting. The microstructure, wettability, interfacial bonding, and mechanical properties of TiO2 @CNTs/ADC12 composites were investigated in detail. By incorporating TiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of CNTs, the contact angle was reduced from 140.5° to 119°, indicating a significant improvement in the wettability of CNTs to aluminum melt. TEM results revealed that TiO2 nanoparticles homogenously dispersed on the surface of CNTs acted as an interlayer structure between CNTs and matrix, locking the CNTs and improving the CNTs-Al interfacial bonding. The semi-coherent interface was formed at the TiO2/α-Al interface, and the mismatch of (001)TiO2//(100)Al is only 6.52%, indicating a good lattice space matching between TiO2 and α-Al matrix. The TiO2 @CNTs/ADC12 composite with 1.2 wt% TiO2 @CNTs displayed high mechanical properties with yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of 196 MPa and 262 MPa, which were 54% and 29% higher than those of the matrix (127 MPa and 203 MPa), respectively. The better mechanical properties may be attributed to good interfacial bonding caused by the semi-coherent interface created by the TiO2 interlayer, leading to an effective load transfer from matrix to CNTs.

Abstract:Hybrid aluminum matrix composites have attracted researchers in the world because of their more excellent mechanical properties than metal matrix composites with single reinforcement. In this paper, TiC@TiN–Ti2N–Al4C3/Al composite was prepared by high-energy ball milling and spark plasma sintering (SPS) with Al–10Ti powders and g-C3N4 powders. TiC, TiN, Ti2N and Al4C3 reinforcements were synthesized by in situ reaction during the high-energy ball milling and SPS processing. Then, TiC@TiN–Ti2N–Al4C3/Al composite ribbons were prepared by melt spun. Next, the ribbons were added to the Al–Zn–Mg–Cu melt to prepare TiC@TiN–Ti2N–Al4C3/Al–Zn–Mg–Cu composite. It was found that TiC@TiN, Ti2N and Al4C3 reinforcements had good refining and reinforcing effects on the Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloy. The average grain size of the composite is from ~ 95 to ~ 35 μm. Besides, there is a 14.0% increase on the ultimate tensile strength and a 21.9% increase on the elongation of the composite. The microstructure, orientation relationship and mechanical properties of the TiC@TiN–Ti2N–Al4C3/Al–Zn–Mg–Cu composite were investigated. Besides, the strengthening mechanism of the TiC@TiN core–shell structure on the composite was mainly discussed by first principles.

Abstract:Aluminium based composites containing 1, 1.5 and 2wt. % of nano-sized Titanium Carbide particulates (TiC), with an average of 45nm, reinforcement were synthesized using low energy planetary ball mill followed by hot extrusion. Microstructural characterization of the materials revealed uniform distribution of reinforcement, grain refinement and the presence of minimal porosity. Properties characterization revealed that the presence of nano-TiC particulates led to an increase in hardness, elastic modulus, 0.2% yield strength (0.2% offset on a stress-strain curve), and the stress at which a material exhibits a specified permanent deformation, Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) and ductility of pure aluminum. Fractography studies revealed that the fracture of pure aluminum occurred in ductile mode due to the incorporation and uniform distribution of nano-TiC particulates. An attempt is made in the present study to correlate the effect of nano-sized TiC particulates as reinforcement and processing type with the micro structural and tensile properties of aluminum composites. The mechanical properties, namely, the UTS, hardness, grain size and distribution of the reinforcement in the base metal were studied in as sintered and extruded conditions. Orowan strengthening criteria was used to predict the yield strength of Al-TiC composites in the present work and experimental results were compared with the theoretical results.

Abstract:Abstract The effects of multi-walled carbon nano-tubes (MWCNTs) and the ball milling parameters on the mechanical properties of the Al-Mg alloy powders were investigated. Three different composite powders were synthesized through ball-milling process at different time and milling rates. The microstructural and phase analyses were carried out via scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, respectively. The results indicated that increasing the ball-milling time and rate would lead to the formation of finer particles, which consequently intensifies the plastic deformation and then, results in lower crystallite size. The morphological investigations indicated that while the MWCNTs agglomerates in lower milling rates, increased milling rate not only improve the distribution of the MWCNTs, but also decreases the length of the nano-tubes and promotes their diffusion into Al-Mg matrix. The formation of Al-Mg intermetallic phases through the ball-milling process of the composite powders was also confirmed via microstructural investigations.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered ideal nanoscale reinforcement for the development of high-performance metal matrix composites due to their unique structure and excellent mechanical properties. However, CNTs are easy to agglomerate and have poor wettability with the aluminum matrix, resulting in unsatisfactory effects when added to the aluminum melt. In this study, Cu-coated carbon nanotubes (Cu@CNTs)-reinforced aluminum matrix composites were fabricated by high-energy ultrasonic-assisted casting. Moreover, the effects of different Cu@CNTs content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of aluminum matrix composites were explored. Meanwhile, Fluent 19.0 software was used to further explore the function of ultrasonic vibration in the melt. The results demonstrated that the mechanical properties of composite with 1.2 wt% Cu@CNTs are optimal. Compared with the matrix, the composite with 1.2 wt% Cu@CNTs displayed a 39.3% increase in yield strength, 53.5% increase in ultimate tensile strength, and 5.7% increase in elongation. The simulation results showed that the uniform dispersion of Cu@CNTs and grain refinement can be attributed to the acoustic streaming effect and cavitation effect of high-energy ultrasound. The improvement of the properties of the composites can be attributed to the grain refinement and the load-bearing effect of CNTs.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of carbon nanotube addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al–Cu–Mg alloy composites. By analyzing the XRD results, it was deduced that the extruded and heat-treated composites, after the addition of CNTs, were preferentially grown on the (220) crystal plane. In addition, the distribution of carbon nanotubes at α-Al grain boundaries was observed by SEM and TEM. The incorporation of carbon nanotubes leads to an increase in the degree of recrystallization in the composite. It is worth noting that according to the study of the four strengthening mechanisms of dislocation strengthening, grain refinement strengthening, load transfer strengthening, and second stage strengthening, when the carbon nanotube content is 1.5 wt.%, the tensile strength (480.4 MPa) and yield strength (456.68 MPa) are significantly improved.

Abstract:Metal Matrix Nano Composites (MMNC) consist of a metal matrix reinforced with nano-particles featuring physical and mechanical properties very different from those of the matrix. Especially carbon Nano tubes (CNT) can improve the matrix material in terms of wear resistance, damping properties and mechanical strength. The present investigation deals with the synthesis and characterization of aluminium matrix reinforced with micro B4C particles, and Multi Wall Carbon nano Tubes (MWCNT) were prepared by powder metallurgy route. Powder mixture containing fixed weight (%) of B4C and different wt% of MWCNT as reinforcement constituents that are uniaxial cold pressed and later green compacts are sintered in continues electric furnace. Microstructure and Mechanical properties such as micro hardness and density are examined. Micro structure of samples has been investigated using scanning electron microscope (SEM) .The results indicated that the increase in wt % of MWCNT improves the bonding and mechanical properties.

Abstract:Strengthening effect of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) reinforced metal matrix composites (MMCs) mainly depends on the interfacial bonding strength which has a decisive influence on comprehensive properties of the composites. However, in CNTs reinforced Cu matrix composites, poor interface bonding due to the lack of wettability between CNTs and Cu matrix has become a bottleneck problem restricting the load-transfer capacity of CNTs. Different from the conventional thoughts of producing interfacial carbides by in-situ reaction with CNTs which will lead to deterioration of structural integrity of CNTs, a novel strategy is used by forming TiC on the surface of intact CNTs through solid phase reaction between the pre-milled CNTs and the Ti powders. The mechanical properties of the composites can be regulated by tailoring the morphology and amount of TiC decorated at the interface. Strong interfacial bonding achieved due to the specially designed interface structure which contributes to the dramatic improvement of strengthening efficiency of CNTs and benefits the plastic deformation of Cu matrix. Consequently, a simultaneous enhancement of tensile strength (281 MPa) and tensile elongation (20.1%) is achieved in the composite with TiC decorated at the interface, and a super high strengthening efficiency (135.8) is realized. The tactic used in our study can provide a reference for the preparation of other CNTs/MMCs.

Abstract:A TiAl composite containing hybrid particles and whisker reinforcements is fabricated by vacuum melting. The results of this study show that the comprehensive mechanical properties and refining effect of the material are best when the content of reinforcement is 1 wt.%, and then the mechanical properties begin to deteriorate as the content increases further. Finely dispersed NbC particles and uniformly dispersed Ti2AlC whiskers are the ideal second phases. The synergistic strengthening effect of NbC particles and in situ Ti2AlC whiskers are key to the improvement of mechanical properties. Compared with the TiAlNb matrix, the fracture stress/strain of the composite at 1073 K is improved from 612 MPa/19.4% to 836 MPa/26.6%; the fracture toughness at room temperature is improved from 18.8 MPa/m2 to 27.4 MPa/m2.

Abstract:Abstract Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are renowned for their low density, high elastic modulus, and exceptional electrical and thermal properties. The continuously developing applications of CNTs provide higher specific stiffness and strength for composite materials. The unique characteristics of CNTs make them ideal reinforcing particles in aluminum matrix composites (AMMCs), which generally exhibit excellent mechanical properties. CNTs/AMMCs are usually prepared using methods such as powder metallurgy, casting, spray deposition, and reactive melting. The uniform diffusion of CNTs in composites is crucial for enhancing the properties of CNTs/AMMCs. The properties of CNTs/AMMCs largely depend on the content, morphology, and distribution of reinforcements in the matrix and the interaction between reinforcements and the matrix. By adding an appropriate volume fraction of CNTs, the hardness, tensile strength, compressive strength, and electrical properties of CNTs/AMMCs were significantly improved. The effects of CNT content on the mechanical properties of CNTs/AMMCs, including the tensile strength, yield strength, compressive strength, stress–strain curve behavior, elastic modulus, hardness, creep, and fatigue behavior, were revealed. The design of microstructure, optimization of the preparation process, and optimization of composition can further improve the mechanical properties of CNTs/AMMCs and expand their application in engineering. The design concept of integrating material homogenization and functional unit structure through biomimetic design of novel gradient structures, layered structures, and multi-level twin structures further optimizes the composition and microstructure of CNTs/AMMCs, which is the key to further obtaining high-performance CNTs/AMMCs. As a multifunctional composite material, CNTs/AMMCs have broad application prospects in fields such as air force, military, aerospace, automation, and electronics. Moreover, CNTs/AMMCs have potential applications in cell therapy, tissue engineering, and other areas.

Abstract:The increased demand for lightweight structural materials in the transport sector has compelled researchers to develop materials with high strength and reduced structural weight, aiming to enhance vehicle performance, minimize fuel and oil consumption and reduce CO 2 emissions. However, their structural weight and strength still need to be improved. Herein, an attempt has been made to fabricate aluminum-based composites reinforced with hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN: 1,3,5,7 wt% ) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs: 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1 wt%) through powder processing method. The results revealed that the 3BN/Al composite disclosed better densification (96.8%) and hardness (49 ± 1.5) among all BN/Al composites. Furthermore, the addition of 0.5 wt% CNTs to BN/Al composite significantly improved the densification (97.7%), Vickers hardness (106%) and tensile strength (189%) over pure Al. This improvement was attributed to homogeneously distributed h-BN and CNTs in the Al matrix and the formation of hard aluminum carbide (Al 4 C 3 ) phase. The results demonstrate that BN/CNTs/Al composite exhibits superior mechanical strength, making them promising structural and functional materials for aerospace and automobile industries.

Abstract:In Drosophila, all of the major metamorphic transitions are regulated by changes in the titer of the steroid hormone ecdysone. Here we examine how a key regulator of metamorphosis and primary ecdysone response gene, the Broad‐Complex, transmits the hormonal signal to one of its targets, the Sgs‐4 glue gene. We show that Broad‐Complex RNAs accumulate in mid third instar larval salivary glands prior to Sgs‐4 induction, as expected for the products of a gene that regulates the timing of Sgs‐4 activation. The Broad‐Complex codes for a family of zinc finger transcriptional regulators. We have identified a number of binding sites for these proteins in sequences known to regulate the timing of Sgs‐4 induction, and have used these sites to derive a binding consensus for each protein. Some of these binding sites are required in vivo for Sgs‐4 activity. In addition, rbp+, a genetically defined Broad‐Complex function that is required for Sgs‐4 induction, acts through these Broad‐Complex binding sites. Thus, the Broad‐Complex directly mediates a temporal and tissue‐specific response to ecdysone as larvae become committed to metamorphosis.

Abstract:Journal of Composite Materials, Ahead of Print. In this study, the effect of ball milling on microstructure and hardness of Al7075 - 15 wt% SiC - 1 wt% MWCNT nanocomposite was investigated as a function of milling time up to 20 h. Mechanically alloyed powders were consolidated by cold pressing followed by sintering at 560°C for 1 h in an argon atmosphere. The structural characterization of nanocomposites was conducted by a X-ray diffractometer (XRD), optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and grain size analyses. The hardness of samples was measured by using Wolpert Wilson-400 micro-hardness testing equipment comprising of a Vickers indenter. The structural defects of pristine and milled MWCNTs were calculated by using defect and carbon intensity ratio (ID/IG) resulted from Raman spectroscopy. The results indicate that after ball milling, the grain size decreases depending on the milling time, the intermetallic Al4C3 phase is formed as a result of the reaction between the matrix and the MWCNT particles, and the MWCNT structure is destroyed. The finest grain size and highest hardness values were obtained as 483 nm and 134 HV, respectively, after 15 h of grinding.
