Abstract:In this work, we extend the x-ray constrained wavefunction fitting approach, a key method in quantum crystallography for charge density reconstruction, to incorporate experimental observables beyond x-ray diffraction. Unlike traditional quantum crystallography methods, which are typically limited to molecules in their ground states, our approach integrates excited states. This advancement will enable simultaneous fitting of x-ray diffraction data alongside optical and x-ray spectroscopic data. We introduce a comprehensive theoretical framework that allows for the inclusion of any experimental observable as a constraint in wavefunction reconstruction. Furthermore, we provide detailed derivations and instructions for implementation of this method using two electronicstructure methods: a generalized Hartree-Fock method for excited states and the Coupled Cluster Equation-of-motion method.

Analytic gradient and derivative couplings for the spin-flip extended configuration interaction singles method: Theory, implementation, and application to proton transfer

Abstract:We present the formalism of analytic gradients and derivative couplings for the spin-flip extended configuration interaction with single excitations (SF-XCIS) method. We report an efficient implementation of the SF-XCIS method in the framework of semiempirical quantum chemistry that allows fast excited-state calculations for large systems. The performance of the SF-XCIS method in combination with semiempirical orthogonalization-corrected models (OMx) is statistically evaluated for vertical singlet excitation energies. The SF-XCIS method treats the ground state and excited states in a fully balanced manner and properly describes conical intersections involving the ground state. It can thus be used in fewest switches surface hopping (FSSH) simulations of nonadiabatic dynamics processes. This is demonstrated in an OM2/SF-XCIS FSSH pilot study of excited-state proton transfer in 7-(2-pyridyl)indole.

Abstract:Determining conical intersection geometries is of key importance to understanding the photochemical reactivity of molecules. While many small- to medium-sized molecules can be treated accurately using multireference approaches, larger molecules require a less computationally demanding approach. In this work, minimum energy crossing point conical intersection geometries for a series of molecules have been studied using spin-flip TDDFT (SF-TDDFT), within the Tamm-Dancoff Approximation, both with and without explicit calculation of nonadiabatic coupling terms, and compared with both XMS-CASPT2 and CASSCF calculated geometries. The less computationally demanding algorithms, which do not require explicit calculation of the nonadiabatic coupling terms, generally fare well with the XMS-CASPT2 reference structures, while the relative energetics are only reasonably replicated with the MECP structure as calculated with the BHHLYP functional and full nonadiabatic coupling terms. We also demonstrate that, occasionally, CASSCF structures deviate quantitatively from the XMS-CASPT2 structures, showing the importance of including dynamical correlation.

Computational Approaches to Model X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy from Molecular Dynamics

Abstract:X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) allows for the resolution of dynamic processes within a material across a wide range of length and time scales. X-ray speckle visibility spectroscopy (XSVS) is a related method that uses a single diffraction pattern to probe ultrafast dynamics. Interpretation of the XPCS and XSVS data in terms of underlying physical processes is necessary to establish the connection between the macroscopic responses and the microstructural dynamics. To aid the interpretation of the XPCS and XSVS data, we present a computational framework to model these experiments by computing the X-ray scattering intensity directly from the atomic positions obtained from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We compare the efficiency and accuracy of two alternative computational methods: the direct method computing the intensity at each diffraction vector separately, and a method based on fast Fourier transform that computes the intensities at all diffraction vectors at once. The computed X-ray speckle patterns capture the density fluctuations over a range of length and time scales and are shown to reproduce the known properties and relations of experimental XPCS and XSVS for liquids.

Ab initio methods for L-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy

Abstract:The theoretical prediction of x-ray absorption spectra (XAS) has become commonplace in electronic structure theory. The ability to better model and understand L-edge spectra is of great interest in the study of transition metal complexes and a wide variety of solid state materials. However, until recently few first-principles works have modeled L-edge XAS due to the presence of strong spin–orbit coupling in the 2p orbitals, which splits the observed peaks into multiple groups of features. Therefore, a proper description of spin–orbit coupling is vital for the successful prediction of L-edge spectra. A number of new approaches that incorporate spin–orbit coupling have recently made advances in the computation of L-edge spectra. In this review, we describe recent work in computational L-edge XAS and how these methods may continue to improve in the future. Comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of the various approaches are considered, with special attention to not only the computational cost of the level of theory but also the various approaches that can be used to compute the absorption spectra with a large number of high energy excited states.
Exact two-component TDDFT with simple two-electron picture-change corrections: X-ray absorption spectra near L- and M-edges of four-component quality at two-component cost

Abstract:X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) has gained popularity in recent years as it probes matter with high spatial and elemental sensitivity. However, the theoretical modelling of XAS is a challenging task since XAS spectra feature a fine structure due to scalar (SC) and spin-orbit (SO) relativistic effects, in particular near L and M absorption edges. While full four-component (4c) calculations of XAS are nowadays feasible, there is still interest in developing approximate relativistic methods that enable XAS calculations at the two-component (2c) level while maintaining the accuracy of the parent 4c approach. In this article we present theoretical and numerical insights into two simple yet accurate 2c approaches based on an (extended) atomic mean-field exact two-component Hamiltonian framework, (e)amfX2C, for the calculation of XAS using linear eigenvalue and damped-response time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). In contrast to the commonly used one-electron X2C (1eX2C) Hamiltonian, both amfX2C and eamfX2C account for the SC and SO two-electron and exchange-correlation picture-change (PC) effects that arise from the X2C transformation. As we demonstrate on L- and M-edge XAS spectra of transition metal and actinide compounds, the absence of PC corrections in the 1eX2C approximation results in a substantial overestimatation of SO splittings, whereas (e)amfX2C Hamiltonians reproduce all essential spectral features such as shape, position, and SO splitting of the 4c references in excellent agreement, while offering significant computational savings. Therefore, the (e)amfX2C PC correction models presented here constitute reliable relativistic 2c quantum-chemical approaches for modelling XAS.

Simulating X‐ray absorption spectra with complete active space self‐consistent field linear response methods

Abstract:<p>In this work, two approaches for simulating X‐ray absorption (XA) spectra with the complete active space self‐consistent field (CASSCF) linear response (LR) method are introduced. The first approach employs the well‐known core‐valence separation (CVS) approximation, which is predominantly used by many other electronic structure methods for simulating X‐ray spectra. The second ansatz uses the harmonic Davidson algorithm for finding interior eigenvalues that lie close to a target excitation energy shift and virtually solves a shifted‐and‐inverted (S&I) generalized eigenvalue problem. LR‐CASSCF K‐edge transition energies are systematically blueshifted though have consistently smaller errors than those of the CAS or restricted active space (RAS) configuration interaction (CI) methods. For simple molecules at which the core hole can only be created at a single site, the state‐specific RASSCF or n‐electron valence second‐order perturbation theory/RASCI gave more accurate principal K‐edge excitation energies. If the core hole can be created at multiple sites, the LR‐CASSCF approaches perform much better than RASSCF. Moreover, we observed that the LR‐CASSCF variants were the only MR methods discussed here that predicted correctly the order of O K‐edge features in the ozone molecule and the permanganate ion. The peak separation of edge features in ozone was as accurate as with equation‐of‐motion coupled cluster singles and doubles. The error of the CVS approximation turned out to be very system dependent and in some cases amounted up to 1.0 eV for the K‐edge excitation energies. Those CVS errors are still acceptable if one considers the observed deviation from the experimental reference by 5–11 eV. The deviations made in the XAS intensities were even more pronounced. CVS and the full S&I oscillator strengths could differ even by a factor of 2.8. Since the S&I approach is at least as efficient as the LR‐CASSCF method for valence excitations, future endeavors to improve the accuracy by accounting for dynamic correlation could be built on top of the full S&I approach.</p>

Structural Relaxation of Materials with Spin-Orbit Coupling: Analytical Forces in Spin-Current DFT

Abstract:Analytical gradients of the total energy are provided for local density and generalized-gradient hybrid approximations to generalized Kohn-Sham spin-current density functional theory (SCDFT). It is shown that gradients may be determined analytically, in a two-component framework, including spin-orbit coupling (SOC), with high accuracy. We demonstrate that renormalization of the electron-electron potential by SOC-induced spin-currents can account for considerable modification of crystal structures. In the case of Iodine-based molecular crystals, the effect may amount to more than half of the total modification of the structure by SOC. Such effects necessitate an SCDFT, rather than DFT, formulation, in which exchange-correlation functionals are endowed with an explicit dependence on spin-current densities. An implementation is presented in the \textsc{Crystal} program.

Abstract:Time-Resolved Serial Femtosecond Crystallography (TR-SFX) conducted at X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs) has become a powerful tool for capturing macromolecular structural movies of light-initiated processes. As the capabilities of XFELs advance, we anticipate that a new range of coherent control and structural Raman measurements will become achievable. Shorter optical and x-ray pulse durations and increasingly more exotic pulse regimes are becoming available at free electron lasers. Moreover, with high repetition enabled by the superconducting technology of European XFEL (EuXFEL) and Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS-II) , it will be possible to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the light-induced differences, allowing for the observation of vibronic motion on the sub-Angstrom level. To predict and assign this coherent motion, which is measurable with a structural technique, new theoretical approaches must be developed. In this paper, we present a theoretical density matrix approach to model the various population and coherent dynamics of a system, which considers molecular system parameters and excitation conditions. We emphasize the use of the Wigner transform of the time-dependent density matrix, which provides a phase space representation that can be directly compared to the experimental positional displacements measured in a TR-SFX experiment. Here, we extend the results from simple models to include more realistic schemes that include large relaxation terms. We explore a variety of pulse schemes using multiple model systems using realistic parameters. An open-source software package is provided to perform the density matrix simulation and Wigner transformations. The open-source software allows us to define any arbitrary level schemes as well as any arbitrary electric field in the interaction Hamiltonian.

Our implementations of these Davidson-type algorithms for core spectroscopies converge as rapidly as the standard DA for valence excitations. It is shown in a proof-of-principle application to the Manganese atom that the additional errors for excitations energies introduced by the CVS approximation compared to the exact S&I approach are negligible for K-edges, but become larger than the methodological error of the CASSCF LR method when computing M-edges. We could also demonstrate that, in case of large active-space K-edge calculations, the computational savings of the CVS approximation are huge as the configuration part of the response vectors is completely neglected. When simulating the oxygen K-edge XA spectrum of the permanganate ion, CASSCF LR showed a better agreement with the experimental spectrum than the CAS-CI and NEVPT2 methods, however, the order of the two close-together pre-edge peaks seems to be inverted.

Web-CONEXS: an inroad to theoretical X-ray absorption spectroscopy

Abstract:Accurate analysis of the rich information contained within X-ray spectra usually calls for detailed electronic structure theory simulations. However, density functional theory (DFT), time-dependent DFT and many-body perturbation theory calculations increasingly require the use of advanced codes running on high-performance computing (HPC) facilities. Consequently, many researchers who would like to augment their experimental work with such simulations are hampered by the compounding of nontrivial knowledge requirements, specialist training and significant time investment. To this end, we present Web-CONEXS, an intuitive graphical web application for democratizing electronic structure theory simulations. Web-CONEXS generates and submits simulation workflows for theoretical X-ray absorption and X-ray emission spectroscopy to a remote computing cluster. In the present form, Web-CONEXS interfaces with three software packages: ORCA, FDMNES and Quantum ESPRESSO, and an extensive materials database courtesy of the Materials Project API. These software packages have been selected to model diverse materials and properties. Web-CONEXS has been conceived with the novice user in mind; job submission is limited to a subset of simulation parameters. This ensures that much of the simulation complexity is lifted and preliminary theoretical results are generated faster. Web-CONEXS can be leveraged to support beam time proposals and serve as a platform for preliminary analysis of experimental data.
Realistic non-collinear ground states of solids with source-free exchange correlation functional

Abstract:In this work, we extend the source-free (SF) exchange correlation (XC) functional developed by Sangeeta Sharma and co-workers to plane-wave density functional theory (DFT) based on the projector augmented wave (PAW) method. This constraint is implemented by the current authors within the VASP source code, using a fast Poisson solver that capitalizes on the parallel three-dimensional fast Fourier transforms (FFTs) implemented in VASP. Using this modified XC functional, we explore the improved convergence behavior that results from applying this constraint to the GGA-PBE+$U$+$J$ functional. In the process, we compare the non-collinear magnetic ground state computed by each functional and their SF counterpart for a select number of magnetic materials in order to provide a metric for comparing with experimentally determined magnetic orderings. We observe significantly improved agreement with experimentally measured magnetic ground state structures after applying the source-free constraint. Furthermore, we explore the importance of considering probability current densities in spin polarized systems, even under no applied field. We analyze the XC torque as well, in order to provide theoretical and computational analyses of the net XC magnetic torque induced by the source-free constraint. Along these lines, we highlight the importance of properly considering the real-space integral of the source-free local magnetic XC field. Our analysis on probability currents, net torque, and constant terms draws additional links to the rich body of previous research on spin-current density functional theory (SCDFT), and paves the way for future extensions and corrections to the SF corrected XC functional.

Abstract:A method is proposed to estimate the energetic and entropic effects of spins of neighbouring molecules on the spin transition of a mononuclear spin crossover (SCO) complex in a molecular crystal. Density functional theory (DFT) methods have been used to model the SCO material [FeII(Lnpdtz)2(NCS)2] (Lnpdtz = 2-naphthyl-5-pyridyl-1,2,4-thiadiazole) exhibiting numerous π-π interactions using a 2D arrangement of 15 molecules. The modelling considers only the effects in the crystallographical ac plane with a particularly pronounced stacking but paves the way for future work with 3D arrangements which are computational much more costly. It involves the optimisation and normal mode calculation of the molecules in a rigid matrix of both low-spin (LS) and high-spin (HS) neighbours. This procedure has been used to calculate the previously defined cooperativity parameter Hcoop (Rackwitz et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2013, 15 p. 15450). For [FeII(Lnpdtz)2(NCS)] we obtain Hcoop = 11 kJ mol-1, a value which is comparable to those found for 3D polynuclear spin crossover materials. A normal mode analysis of the optimised centrally located molecule indicates that the vibrational entropy of the spin transition is somewhat higher (5 J K-1 mol-1) for the LS to HS transition in the LS matrix than in the HS one. The calculations show that the interactions with the neighbours influence the low-frequency modes with wave numbers <65-70 cm-1. These cause the main difference in the vibrational entropy of the spin transition for the vicinity of high- and low-spin molecules. Furthermore, a deformation of the coordination sphere of the central molecule is observed when the spins of the surrounding centres are switched. This deformation is accompanied by a change in the equatorial Fe-N bond lengths.

Introducing the Single-Atom Real-Space Global Minimization Method for Solving Small Structures in Single Crystal X-ray Crystallography

Abstract:A new method for solving small X-ray structures with up to couple of hundreds of atoms in the unit cell has been developed. The method works by locating atoms one-by-one via global minimization of a newly defined single-atom R1 factor in real-space. In total forty test cases (of twenty samples), every resulting model has at least 52% atoms located correctly, and in more than half of the cases this percentage is 90% and higher. For most heavier-atoms-containing (heavier than Si) small structures it is sufficient to use a single-solution strategy (using the as-collected reflection intensities). But for most lighter-atoms-only (C, N, O and F) small structures it is necessary to try multi-solution strategy: try different B values for modifying the reflection intensities by multiplying them with exp(B s2) before feeding to the method, where s = sin{\theta}/{\lambda}, and pick the best solution. This method has been demonstrated to be very effective for locating heavier atoms, so, it has potential applications in macromolecular crystallography by assisting determination of heavy-atom substructures.

A correctly scaling rigorously spin-adapted and spin-complete open-shell CCSD implementation for arbitrary high-spin states

Abstract:In this paper, we report on a correctly scaling novel coupled cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) implementation for arbitrary high-spin open-shell states. The chosen cluster operator is completely spin-free, i.e. employs spatial substitutions only. It is composed of our recently developed Löwdin-type operators (doi: <a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.1063/5.0026762" href="https://doi.org/10.1063/5.0026762" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.1063/5.0026762</a>), which ensure (1) spin completeness and (2) spin adaption i.e. spin purity of the CC wave function. In contrast to the proof-of-concept matrix-representation-based implementation presented there, the present implementation relies on second quantization and factorized tensor contractions. The generated singles and doubles operators are embedded in an equation generation engine. In the latter, Wick's theorem is used to derive prefactors arising from spin integration directly from the spin-free full contraction patterns. The obtained Wick terms composed of products of Kronecker deltas are represented by special non-antisymmetrized Goldstone diagrams. Identical (redundant) diagrams are identified by solving the underlying graph isomorphism problem. All non-redundant graphs are then automatically translated to locally -- one term at a time -- factorized tensor contractions. Finally, the spin-adapted and spin-complete (SASC) CCS and CCSD variants are applied to a set of small molecular test systems. Both correlation energies and amplitude norms hint towards a reasonable convergence of the SASC-CCSD method for a BCH series truncation of order four. In comparison to spin orbital CCSD, SASC-CCSD leads to slightly improved correlation energies with differences of up to 0.886 mE_H (0.98% w.r.t. spin orbital CCSD(T)).

Abstract:XYG3-type doubly hybrid (xDH) approximations have gained widespread recognition for their accuracy in describing a diverse range of chemical and physical interactions. However, a recent study [Song et al., J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 12, 800–807 (2021)] has highlighted the limitation of xDH methods in calculating the dissociation of NaCl molecules. This issue has been related to the density and orbitals used for evaluating the energy in xDH methods, which are obtained from lower-rung hybrid density functional approximations (DFAs) and display substantial density errors in the dissociation limit. In this work, we systematically investigate the influence of density on several challenging datasets and find that xDH methods are less sensitive to density errors compared to semi-local and hybrid DFAs. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the self-interaction corrected SCAN density approach offers superior accuracy compared to the self-consistent SCAN density and Hartree–Fock density approaches, as evidenced by performing charge analysis on the dissociation of heterodimers, such as NaCl and LiF. Building on these insights, we propose a five-parameter xDH method using the SCAN density and orbitals corrected by the PZ-SIC scheme. This new xDH@SCAN(SIC) method provides a balanced and accurate description across a wide range of challenging systems.

New physical insights into the supporting subspace factorization of XMS-CASPT2 and generalization to multiple spin states via spin-free formulation

Abstract:This paper introduces a spin-free formulation of the supporting subspace factorization [C. Song and T. J. Martínez, J. Chem. Phys. 149, 044108 (2018)], enabling a reduction in the computational scaling of the extended multi-state complete active space second-order perturbation (XMS-CASPT2) method for arbitrary spins. Compared to the original formulation that is defined in the spin orbitals and is limited to singlet states, the spin-free formulation in this work treats different spin states equivalently, thus naturally generalizing the idea beyond singlet states. In addition, we will present a new way of deriving the supporting subspace factorization with the purpose of understanding its physical interpretation. In this new derivation, we separate the sources that make CASPT2 difficult into the “same-site interactions” and “inter-site interactions.” We will first show how the Kronecker sum can be used to remove the same-site interactions in the absence of inter-site interactions, leading to MP2 energy in dressed orbitals. We will then show how the inter-site interactions can be exactly recovered using Löwdin partition, where the supporting subspace concept will naturally arise. The new spin-free formulation maintains the main advantage of the supporting subspace factorization, i.e., allowing XMS-CASPT2 energies to be computed using highly optimized MP2 energy codes and Fock build codes, thus reducing the scaling of XMS-CASPT2 to the same scaling as MP2. We will present and discuss results that benchmark the accuracy and performance of the new method. To demonstrate how the new method can be useful in studying real photochemical systems, the supporting subspace XMS-CASPT2 is applied to a photoreaction sensitive to magnetic field effects. How do spin-scaled double hybrids designed for excitation energies perform for noncovalent excited-state interactions? An investigation on aromatic excimer models

Abstract:Time-dependent double hybrids with spin-component or spin-opposite scaling to their second-order perturbative correlation correction have demonstrated competitive robustness in the computation of electronic excitation energies. Some of the most robust are those recently published by our group [M. Casanova-Páez, L. Goerigk, J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2021, 20, 5165]. So far, the implementation of these functionals has not allowed correctly calculating their ground-state total energies. Herein, we define their correct spin-scaled ground-state energy expressions which enables us to test our methods on the noncovalent excited-state interaction energies of four aromatic excimers. A range of 22 double hybrids with and without spin scaling are compared to the reasonably accurate wavefunction reference from our previous work [A. C. Hancock, L. Goerigk, RSC Adv. 2023, 13, 35964]. The impact of spin scaling is highly dependent on the underlying functional expression, however, the smallest overall errors belong to spin-scaled functionals with range separation: SCS- and SOS-ωPBEPP86, and SCS-RSX-QIDH. We additionally determine parameters for DFT-D3(BJ)/D4 ground-state dispersion corrections of these functionals, which reduce errors in most cases. We highlight the necessity of dispersion corrections for even the most robust TD-DFT methods but also point out that ground-state based corrections are insufficient to completely capture dispersion effects for excited-state interaction energies.

Abstract:X-ray spectroscopy is one of the most powerful tools to access structure and properties of matter in different states of aggregation as it allows to trace atomic and molecular energy levels in course of various physical and chemical processes. X-ray spectroscopic techniques probe the local electronic structure of a particular atom in its environment, in contrast to UV/Vis spectroscopy, where transitions generally occur between delocalized molecular orbitals. Complementary information is provided by using a combination of different absorption, emission, scattering as well as photo- and autoionization X-ray methods. However, interpretation of the complex experimental spectra and verification of experimental hypotheses is a non-trivial task and powerful first principles theoretical approaches that allow for a systematic investigation of a broad class of systems are needed. Focussing on transition metal compounds, L-edge spectra are of particular relevance as they probe the frontier d-orbitals involved in metal-ligand bonding. Here, near-degeneracy effects in combination with spin-orbit coupling lead to a complicated multiplet energy level structure, which poses a serious challenge to quantum chemical methods. MCSCF theory has been shown to be capable of providing a rather detailed understanding of experimental X-ray spectroscopy. However, it cannot be considered as a 'blackbox' tool and its application requires not only a command of formal theoretical aspects, but also a broad knowledge of already existing applications. Both aspects are covered in this overview.

XAFS method for the structural characterization of single atom catalysts

Abstract:Single atom catalysts (SACs) have become a hot topic in catalysis research due to their 100% atomic utilization, unique coordination environment, and superior catalytic performance. To explain the special catalytic behavior of SACs and maximize the advantages of single atom configurations, understanding the structure-performance relationship of SACs at the atomic level is key to the research. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) provides an irreplaceable method for characterizing SACs, which can be applied to almost all transition-metal SACs and can obtain rich structural information about atomistic structures and electronic properties. In this review, starting from the basic principles of XAFS technology, we discuss the application of extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy in the study of the local coordination, symmetry, hybrid of orbitals, oxidation state, charge transfer and many other structural and electronic properties. After that, we introduce the emerging advanced X-ray spectroscopy methods that improve characterization capabilities and compensate for the shortcomings of traditional XAFS methods in SAC research, and then discuss in-situ and operando experimental techniques for SAC characterization to monitor the dynamic structure of the active sites in the presence of reactants under reaction conditions.
