Abstract:Background: Feline Injection Site-Associated Sarcoma (FISS) is a mesenchymal neoplasia of aggressive behavior that develops in sites where vaccine or drugs were administered. FISS is clinically characterized by the appearance of a solitary firm nodule or a diffuse mass, adhered to tissues, in regions associated to vaccine or drug applications. Despite low prevalence, tumor recurrence rates can reach 80%. FISS present more aggressive histological characteristics when compared to sarcomas not associated to injection sites. The aim of this paper is to contribute towards the understanding of the biological behavior of FISS.Materials, Methods & Results: Sixteen samples of FISS were analyzed. Fibrosarcomas were the most frequent histological subtype (62.5%). Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor was diagnosed in 18.75% cases. Ten (62.5%) FISS were classified as grade II; 4/16 (25%) grade I, and 2/16 (12.5%) grade III. Cox-2 overexpression occurred in 3/16 (18.75%) samples, with positive correlation between Cox-2 expression and cellularity (r = 0.696, P = 0.003). Mitotic index lower than 9 events was found in 11/16 (68.7%) samples and between 10 and 19 mitotic events in 5/16 (31.3%) cases. Mean Ki-67 expression was 2.39 ± 2.48%. FISS characterized as fibrosarcomas presented longer overall survival (median 545 days) than other histological subtypes (median 130.5 days) [P = 0.01].Discussion: Patients with FISS generally present with larger nodules than those with sarcomas not associated to injections, suggesting a challenge for pet owners to note subcutaneous tumors in the interscapular region, in addition to the aggressive biological behavior of FISS. The influence of size on prognosis remains controversial. An association between histologic grade and the development of metastasis has been observed, with patients with grade III FISS associated with an increase in the metastatic rate. The present study did not find a correlation between overall survival and histologic grade. A positive correlation between the presence of giant multinucleated cells and tumor grade has been observed.Despite the absence of such correlation in the present study, possibly due to a small sample, a trend for higher frequency of giant cells in advanced histologic grade was observed. Cox-2 expression in 81.75% and overexpression in 18.75% of our samples contrasts with the 64% Cox-2 expression and the absence of Cox-2 expression found by other authors. A positive moderate correlation between cellularity and Cox-2 expression was also observed, while another study did not find a correlation of Cox-2 expression with tumor grade, recurrence rates or overall survival. Cox metabolites such as prostaglandins can enhance cellular proliferation, inhibit apoptosis, induce angiogenesis, alter cellular adherence to facilitate metastatic development and inhibit immune surveillance. In the present study, no correlation was found between Cox-2 and angiogenesis in FISS. Our findings demonstrated low immunolabeling for Ki-67. A previous study analyzed 52 samples of FISS, 51% of them considered grade III, with a mean Ki-67 labeling of 14%. The lower Ki-67 staining in the samples of the present study may be related to the lower number of samples of grade III FISS or to a difference in the studied population. Fibrosarcomas are associated with better prognosis than other histological subtypes. Furthermore, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors were diagnosed as a possible histological subtype of FISS.

Abstract:BackgroundSporotrichosis is a mycotic infectious disease that is generally acquired by traumatic inoculation of contaminated materials especially from plant debris or through bites and scratches from diseased animals, such as domestic cats. It affects the skin, lymphatic system, and other organs in the warm-blooded host. Etiological agents are embedded in the plant-associated order Ophiostomatales. With essential differences between possible outbreak sources and ecological niche, host-environment interactions are classic determinants of risk factors for disease acquisition. Sporotrichosis outbreaks with zoonotic transmission, such as those that are ongoing in southern and southeastern Brazil, have highlighted the threat of cross-species pathogen transmission. Sporothrix brasiliensis has emerged as a human threat owing to the intimate contact pattern between diseased cats and humans in endemic areas.ResultsWe describe the recent emergence of feline sporotrichosis in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, Brazil, with an overwhelming occurrence of S. brasiliensis as the etiological agent. A phylogenetic and a haplotype approach were used to investigate the origin of this epidemic and the impact of feline transmission on genetic diversity. During the last 3-year period, 163 cases of feline sporotrichosis were reported in São Paulo with proven S. brasiliensis culture. The haplotype diversity of feline S. brasiliensis isolates revealed the expansion of a clonal population with low genetic diversity. Haplotype analysis confirmed that isolates from São Paulo shared the haplotype originated in the long-lasting outbreak of cat-transmitted sporotrichosis in Rio de Janeiro, which differed from the haplotype circulating in the Rio Grande do Sul epidemic.ConclusionsThe fast spread of sporotrichosis in a short period of time highlights the potential for outbreaks and suggests that the mycosis may affect an urban population with a high concentration of susceptible felines. The feline sporotrichosis epidemic shows no signs of slowing, and this epidemiological pattern may require specific public health strategies to control future outbreaks.

Microchip-associated fibrosarcoma in a cat

Abstract:A 9-year-old, neutered male cat was presented for a subcutaneous mass on the neck. After surgical removal of the mass, a pet identification microchip was found within the tumour. Histological examination of the mass revealed typical features of the feline postinjection sarcoma. The cat had never received injections at the tumour site; all routine vaccinations were administered in the hindlimbs. Few cases of sarcomas developing at the site of microchip application have been reported in animals, although the contributory role of vaccine administrations has not been ruled out. This is the first report of a microchip-associated fibrosarcoma in a cat. Adherence to American Association of Feline Practitioners vaccination guidelines, avoiding the interscapular area, enabled confirmation of the definitive aetiology of the neoplasia.

Abstract:Feline pulmonary carcinoma (FPC) is an uncommon neoplasm with unique morphological features. We describe the gross, histological, metastatic, and immunohistochemical aspects of FPC, based on postmortem examinations from an 11-year retrospective study. Thirty-nine cases were selected. Predispositions were observed in senior (P < .001) and Persian (P = .039) cats. There were three gross patterns of the pulmonary tumors: (a) a large nodule and additional smaller nodules, (b) a solitary nodule, and (c) small, multifocal to coalescent nodules. Extrapulmonary metastases were present in 22/39 cases (56.4%), mainly in the regional lymph nodes (17/39, 43.5%), skeletal muscles (9/39, 23%), kidneys (6/39, 15.3%), and parietal pleura (4/39, 10.2%). The primary tumor size was correlated with the occurrence of extrapulmonary metastases (P = .002). Histologically, the tumors were classified as papillary adenocarcinoma (19/39, 48.7%), adenosquamous carcinoma (ADS) (8/39, 20.5%), acinar adenocarcinoma (6/39, 15.3%), solid adenocarcinoma (3/39, 7.6%), lepidic adenocarcinoma (2/39, 5.1%), and micropapillary adenocarcinoma (1/39, 2.5%). By immunohistochemistry, 39/39 cases (100%) were positive for pancytokeratin, 34/39 (87.1%) for thyroid transcription factor-1, and 8/39 (20.5%) for vimentin. Immunoreactivity for p40 was detected in the squamous component of all ADSs (8/8, 100%) and occasionally in the glandular component of adenocarcinomas (10/31, 32.2%). Napsin A expression was absent in all feline tissue tested. The results indicate that a modified and simplified histological classification based on current human and domestic animal systems is appropriate for cats. Additionally, this study highlights the utility of p40 as an immunohistochemical marker for the diagnosis of FPC with squamous differentiation.
Unlocking immunotherapy targets: programmed death 1 and its ligand and their correlation with tumour grade in feline injection site sarcoma

Abstract:In this study, the immunohistochemical expression of programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) and programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1), which could facilitate a novel approach to immunotherapy for feline injection site sarcomas (FISSs), was investigated. Treatment strategies based on the suppression of this pathway are possible for tumours expressing PD-1/PD-L1. In this context, FISSs were histologically classified, the grade of sarcoma and the intensity of lymphocyte infiltration determined and PD-1 and PD-L1 expression evaluated in tumours of different grade. Tumours were immunolabelled for vimentin, S100, smooth muscle actin and sarcomeric actin. Fibrosarcoma was diagnosed in eight cases, undifferentiated sarcoma in one case, liposarcoma in one case and rhabdomyosarcoma in one case. PD-1 expression was found mainly in lymphoid infiltrations and macrophage-like cells, while PD-L1 was found primarily in tumour cells and infiltrated macrophage-like cells. By Pearson correlation analysis, tumour differentiation was found to have a moderate correlation with PD-1 (P <0.05) and a high correlation with PD-L1 (P <0.01). Tumour grade had a low correlation with PD-1 and a moderate correlation with PD-L1 (P >0.05). A moderate correlation was also detected between PD-1 and PD-L1 (P <0.05). It was concluded that the increased expression of PD-1 and PD-L1 may be associated with poor tumour differentiation and, therefore, poor prognosis in FISS.
Profile and temporal dynamics of the feline sporotrichosis epidemic in southern Brazil: A forecasting analysis

Abstract:A detailed clinical-epidemiological analysis of feline sporotrichosis was conducted, and 288 cases reported between the years 2007 and 2018 were analyzed. The studied cases primarily involved mongrel cats (240/260), males (212/282), and adults (121/200). The main objectives were to identify the risk factors, calculate the monthly incidence rates, and establish a predictive model using the seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) approach. The statistical analysis revealed significant associations (p < 0.05) between prolonged lesion evolution times and factors such as respiratory signs, prior treatments, and lesion contact. Empirical treatment was identified as a significant risk factor for disease progression. Moreover, the number of cases demonstrated an increasing trend over the study period, with annual peaks noted in disease incidence. The SARIMA model proved to be an effective tool for forecasting the incidence of sporotrichosis, offering robust support for epidemiological surveillance and facilitating targeted public health interventions in endemic regions. The predictive accuracy of the developed model underscored its utility in enhancing disease monitoring and supporting proactive health measures for the effective management of sporotrichosis.
The Landscape of Tumor-Infiltrating Immune Cells in Feline Mammary Carcinoma: Pathological and Clinical Implications

Abstract:Feline mammary carcinoma (FMC) shares key molecular and clinicopathological features with human breast cancer. We have herein studied the inflammatory infiltrate of FMC in order to uncover potential therapeutic targets and prognostic markers. To this end, the expression of different markers (CD3, CD4, CD8, CD20, CD56, FoxP3, CD68 and CD163) was analyzed in total, stromal (s) and intratumoral (i) tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), in 73 feline mammary carcinomas. The results revealed that higher percentages of sCD8+ TILs were associated with longer disease-free survival (p = 0.05) and overall survival (p = 0.021). Additionally, higher percentages of iCD4+ TILs correlated with positive lymph node status (p = 0.003), whereas CD163+ TAMs were associated with undifferentiated tumors (p = 0.013). In addition, sCD3+ (p = 0.033), sCD8+ (p = 0.044) and sCD68+ (p = 0.023) immune cells were enriched in triple negative normal-like carcinomas compared to other subtypes. Altogether, our results suggest that specific subsets of immune cells may play a major role in clinical outcome of cats with mammary carcinoma, resembling what has been reported in human breast cancer. These data further support the relevance of the feline model in breast cancer studies.

Abstract:Sporotrichosis is a traumatic mycosis affecting the skin or subcutaneous tissues caused by Sporothrix dimorphic fungus. The fungal complex includes several pathogenic species, out of which S. brasiliensis and S. schenckii are predominant in Brazil. In Mato Grosso do Sul (MS) state, the first human and animal cases were reported in 2016 in Corumbá and Ladário cities. Accordingly, we present the first occurrences of feline sporotrichosis detected in the state capital Campo Grande, MS, by the Zoonoses Control Service (ZCS) of the Municipal Public Health Department. The study included four allochthonous cases of feline sporotrichosis originating from Corumbá, MS, attended by the ZCS. All four cats presented classical clinical signs of sporotrichosis, as ulcerative nodular cutaneous lesions. Three slides tested positive by direct microscopy and PCR, followed by Sanger sequencing confirmed Sporothrix brasiliensis in two samples. The initial suspicion and diagnosis of feline sporotrichosis at the ZCS highlights the importance of accurate surveillance of sporotrichosis in non-endemic areas to enhance the capacity to prevent, detect and respond to emerging diseases in Campo Grande.

Abstract:Abstract To investigate whether adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-induced platelet hyperaggregability is associated with nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) or retinal vein occlusion (RVO). We retrospectively reviewed thrombophilia screening data of patients with NAION or RVO without a history of arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, obesity, and cigarette abuse. Patients with a positive family history for thromboembolism were not excluded. Platelet aggregation (area under the curve, AUC) after induction of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 µmol of ADP was estimated in 25 NAION and RVO patients and compared with 25 healthy controls. We observed significantly greater platelet aggregation post 0.5 (P = 0.002) and 1.0 (P = 0.008) µmol of ADP among NAION and RVO patients compared with healthy controls. Platelet hyperaggregability was significantly more prevalent in patients than in controls (56% vs. 8%; P = 0.0006). Our results suggest that in NAION and RVO patients without a history of arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, obesity, and cigarette abuse, platelets are significantly hyperreactive after induction of very low concentrations of ADP when compared with healthy individuals. This hyperreactivity is particularly evident in patients with a family history of thromboembolism.
Development of an injection site sarcoma shortly after meloxicam injection in an unvaccinated cat

Abstract:A single dose of a rapidly-absorbed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) was injected into the subcutaneous tissue of the interscapular region of a 12.5-year-old cat. A mild swelling was noticed at the injection site 6 weeks later. This progressed into a 5 cm diameter mass which was removed 6 months after the injection had been given. An injection site sarcoma (ISS) was diagnosed histologically. As the cat had not been vaccinated for at least 12 years, the previous NSAID injection was considered to be a possible cause of the ISS. Inflammation is thought to be important in the development of ISS. If injection of a rapidly-absorbed NSAID can stimulate sufficient inflammation to promote the development of an ISS, other non-vaccine injections may also have the potential to influence ISS development. This suggests that injection of both vaccines and non-vaccine medications should be minimised to reduce the risk of ISS development.

Abstract:patients are best treated with parenteral cobalamin, although large oral doses (1000 jg daily) can be used if necessary. A failure to split cobalamin from its binders in food (food-cobalamin malabsorption), a disorder due to various types of gastric dysfunction including atrophic gastritis and most forms of gastric surgery, is more common than pernicious anemia and has been identified in 30-40% of patients with low cobalamin levels. Such patients can probably be treated with small oral doses of cobalamin (1-10 jig daily), as can patients with nonmalabsorptive causes of deficiency. Treatment of patients with mild cobalamin deficiency may take on added importance as folate supplementation becomes more widespread in the United States.

During the study period, 6,827 histopathological examinations (4,090 necropsies and 2,737 biopsies) of companion animals were reviewed, and fungal infections were diagnosed in 54 cases. Of these, 32 cases were diagnosed in cats and 22 in dogs. Sporotrichosis was the most prevalent mycosis (19/54), followed by dermatophytosis (9/54), cryptococcosis (8/54), candidiasis (7/54), and phaeohyphomycosis (4/54). Other diseases had two cases each, including aspergillosis, mucormycosis, and histoplasmosis, whereas coccidioidomycosis occurred once. Mycoses were diagnosed through microscopic lesions associated with the histomorphological characteristics of the agent, as evidenced by routine and special histochemical stains. They were occasionally confirmed by immunohistochemistry and microbiological cultivation. This retrospective study showed that despite being uncommon, fungal diseases are important causes of death in dogs and cats in the region, with cats being the most affected species and sporotrichosis being the most prevalent mycosis. Clinical signs were correlated with the portal of entry of the infection associated with localized or disseminated superficial and deep skin lesions or affecting parenchymal organs, especially in systemic infections. Microscopic lesions were mainly characterized by pyogranulomatous inflammation associated with fungal structures. In dogs, mycoses occurred mainly owing to an immunological impairment secondary to canine distemper virus co-infection.
Feline leishmaniasis in an animal shelter in northeastern Brazil: Clinical aspects, coinfections, molecular detection, and serological study of a new recombinant protein

Abstract:Infection and clinical cases of leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania infantum in cats have been increasingly reported in several countries, including Brazil. In this study, we used an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and an immunochromatographic test (ICT) based on a recombinant antigen (rKDDR-plus) to detect anti-Leishmania antibodies in cats from an animal shelter in northeastern Brazil. We compared the results with an ELISA using L. infantum crude antigen (ELISA-CA). We also investigated the presence of Leishmania DNA in blood or ocular conjunctival samples as well as the association between Leishmania PCR positivity and serological positivity to feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and Toxoplasma gondii. Concerning serological assays, a higher positivity was detected using the ICT-rKDDR-plus (7.5%; 7/93) as compared to ELISA-rKDDR-plus (5.4%; 5/93) and ELISA-CA (4.3%; 4/93). Upon PCR testing, 52.7% (49/93) of the ocular conjunctival swabs and 48.3% (44/91) of the blood samples were positive. Together, PCR and serological testing revealed overall positivities of 73.1% (68/93) and 12.9% (12/93), respectively. Among PCR-positive samples, 45.5% (31/68) showed co-infection with FIV, 17.6% (12/68) with FeLV, and 82.3% (56/68) with T. gondii. More than half of the PCR-positive cats showed at least one clinical sign suggestive of leishmaniasis (58.8%; 40/68) and dermatological signs were the most frequent ones (45.5%; 31/68). Both tests employing the recombinant antigen rKDDR-plus (i.e., ICT-rKDDR-plus and ELISA-rKDDR-plus) detected more positive cats than the ELISA-CA but presented low overall accuracy. PCR testing using either blood or ocular conjunctival samples detected much more positive cats than serological tests.

Abstract:A canine case of Coombs' test positive and antinuclear antibody-negative hemolytic anemia was examined because of the development of skin lesions after 18 months treatment with prednisolone. Histopathological examination of biopsy specimens obtained from skin and oral mucosa revealed the acantholysis, edematous lesions of the stratum basale and mononuclear cell accumulation in the dermis. Deposits of immunoglobulin G and complement factor 3 were detected at the intercellular and dermoepidermal junction by the direct immunofluorescent test. From these results, the case was considered to be an autoimmune disease caused by distinct antibodies against different organs.
Occurrence, genetic diversity, and antimicrobial resistance of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus spp. in hospitalized and non-hospitalized cats in Brazil

Abstract:Methicillin-resistant Staphylococci (MRS) cause infections at various sites and exhibit multidrug resistance. Despite their importance in veterinary medicine, only little is known about Staphylococcus spp. colonizing and infecting cats. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to isolate and identify Staphylococcus spp. colonizing hospitalized and non-hospitalized domestic cats and analyze their antimicrobial resistance profiles, genetic diversity, and risk factors associated with MRS colonization. A total of 218 oral and axillary swabs were obtained from 109 cats, including 77 non-hospitalized and 32 hospitalized cats. After plating on selective media, the isolates were identified via matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and rpo B and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Subsequently, antimicrobial sensitivity of the strains was assessed, and they were screened for mec A gene. Methicillin-resistant S . haemolyticus (MRSH) isolates were subjected to multilocus sequence typing, whereas methicillin-resistant S . pseudintermedius (MRSP) and S . felis isolates were subjected to whole genome sequencing. S . felis was most commonly isolated from non-hospitalized cats (28.1%), whereas S . pseudintermedius and MRS were commonly isolated from hospitalized cats (25%). MRSH isolates from hospitalized animals were classified as ST3. The identified MRSP strains belonged to two well-known sequence types, ST551 and ST71. Moreover, antimicrobial use ( p = 0.0001), hospitalization ( p = 0.0141), and comorbidities ( p = 0.002) were associated with increased MRS prevalence in cats.

Abstract:Introduction: Cancer is a leading cause of death in cats, and the rate of such disease has been increasing recently. Nonetheless, feline oncology represents an important area of study not only for the health and wellbeing of cats but also for human health since various types of cancer in cats share similarities to those found in humans. Therefore, epidemiological studies on feline oncology may suggest environmental and genetic factors contributing to cancer in cats, which can eventually be translated to improve human cancer care. Method: To provide an initial understanding of the epidemiology of feline neoplasms, a descriptive study was undertaken using a dataset documenting cases of feline cancer gathered from the Liguria region (northwest Italy) spanning from 2002 to 2022. The database includes tumor location, morphological codes of the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology, 3rd Edition (ICD-O-3), feline's breed, sex, neuter status, date of birth, date of diagnosis, national territorial unit code of the town of the owner's residence, and an alphanumeric string uniquely identifying the owner's surname. Results and discussion: The dataset involves a population of 4,399 cats, including 3,195 females (1,425 neutered) and 1,204 males (750 neutered). Our results indicate that mammary gland tumors are the most represented tumors in the female population, while soft tissue and skin cancers appear to have a higher abundance in the male population during the periods investigated (2002-2022). Moreover, Poisson regression analysis showed that not neutered female cats have a significantly increased risk of developing mammary gland tumors compared to the neutered female population [proportional morbidity ratio (PMR) neutered vs. not neutered = 0.58, 95% CI: 0.47-0.72]; meanwhile, for both sexes, for soft tissue and skin tumors, being neutered appears to be a risk factor (PMR neutered vs. not neutered = 2.26, 95% CI: 1.86-2.73; PMR neutered vs. not neutered = 1.16, 95% CI: 0.89-1.51). Finally, the evaluation of the Ligurian municipalities pollution, based on wild boars data (i.e., biomonitors), which coexisted with cats, was correlated to cancer development for all the tumors investigated (in polluted areas, estimated PMRs ranged from 42.61 to 80.13, 95% CI: 29.94-105.11). Overall, the data presented here suggest the use of the feline population as a possible animal model for human health, i.e., sentinel.
Intragraft CD45 RO gene expression is an early marker to detect small bowel allograft rejection in rats

Abstract:Wistar Furth (WF) intestinal allografts were transplanted into Sprague‐Dawley (SD) rats. Recipients were randomly allocated into the following groups: (1) no treatment; (2) cyclosporine (CsA) 6 mg/kg/day, daily, subcutaneously (s.c.; full‐dose therapy); (3) CsA 3 mg/kg/day, daily, s.c. (half‐dose therapy); and (4) CsA 3 mg/kg/day, daily, s.c. + Tripterygium Wilfordii Hook. WF (TW) 3 mg/kg/day, daily, s.c. WF rats with intestinal autografts were used as controls. CD45RO intragraft expression and its index (CD45RO/CD45), measured by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT‐PCR), were significantly elevated in untreated and half‐dose CsA‐treated allografts as early as postoperative day (POD) 4, when rejection of intestinal allografts was not detected by routine pathology. Intestinal permeability measured by Tc‐DTPA radioassay was significantly elevated in untreated allografts on POD 6. Histology showed that there was severe rejection in untreated intestinal allografts and mild rejection in allografts treated with a half dose of CsA on POD 6. There was a normal CD45RO expression, permeability, and histology in intestinal allografts treated with either a full dose of CsA or a half dose of CsA + TW. These data indicate that CD45RO intragraft gene expression is an early marker to detect intestinal allograft rejection in rats. © 1999 Wiley‐Liss, Inc. MICROSURGERY 19:348–350 1999

Abstract:In the combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) era, renal dysfunction remains common. The Study to Understand the Natural History of HIV/AIDS in the Era of Effective Therapy (SUN) (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00146419) is a prospective observational cohort study of HIV-infected adults. At baseline, comprehensive data were collected, including cystatin C and measures of renal function. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed to identify factors associated with baseline renal dysfunction [estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 90 ml/min/1.73 m(2) calculated using the simplified Modification of Diet in Renal Disease equation] and elevated cystatin C (>1.0 mg/liter) in a cross-sectional analysis. Among 670 subjects with complete data (mean age 41 years, mean CD4 cell count 530 cells/mm(3), 79% prescribed cART), the mean eGFR was 96.8 ml/min/1.73 m(2). Forty percent of subjects had renal dysfunction; 3.3% had chronic kidney disease (eGFR < 60 ml/min/1.73 m(2)). Elevated cystatin C was present in 18% of subjects. In multivariate analysis, renal dysfunction was associated with older age, non-Hispanic white race/ethnicity, higher body mass index (BMI), hypertension, higher cystatin C levels, and current prescription of ritonavir. Factors associated with elevated cystatin C included hepatitis C coinfection, hypertension, current smoking, older age, current tenofovir use, detectable plasma HIV RNA, and elevated microalbuminuria. The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) was low in this contemporary HIV cohort. However, mild to moderate renal dysfunction was common despite the widespread use of cART.
