Abstract:This paper presents a progressive damage model, which is sufficiently general to predict the ultimate load-bearing ability and complex failure behaviors of the aluminum–carbon fiber/epoxy composite vessel structure. The model is implemented in the commercial finite element software ABAQUS based on the integration of material property degradation method (MPDM) and cohesive element (CE) method. The MPDM is implemented by ABAQUS user subroutine UMAT to model the intralaminar failure of composite laminates, while CEs are employed to simulate the delamination initiation and evolution at the interfaces. The progression of damage is controlled by a linear damage evolution law, which is based on the fracture energy dissipating during the process. In addition, the predictions of the model are also compared with experiments and reasonably good agreements are obtained.

Abstract:Most of the unit cell models for Z-pinned composite laminates (ZCL) are mesoscopic in scale, where the fiber reinforced zone is modeled as homogeneous but without detailed characterization and failure analysis of the fibers and matrix. This paper proposes a new concurrent multiscale unit cell model to investigate the in-plane micro-damage evolution of ZCL. The novelty worth mentioning is the proposed element-based method to generate random microbuckling spatial fibers in the fiber reinforced zone, where the microbuckling is caused by fiber waviness and fiber crimp, and then the mesh of fiber, Z-pin, matrix, and the interface between Z-pin and matrix is regenerated. In-plane tensile tests (ASTM D3039) are conducted for verification. There is good agreement between experiment and simulation, only with deviations of -0.97% and 2.69% for tensile modulus and fracture initiation stress, respectively. The research indicates that in-plane micro-damage initiates from the interface between Z-pin and matrix. The stress concentration and higher local fiber volume fraction, caused by the microbuckling spatial fibers clustered near the Z-pin, play a major role in the evolution of interface damage, crack initiation and growth.

Abstract:Most studies on composite joints focus on in-plane bearing mode, while little attention to fastener pull-through failure mode from out-of-plane loads. This paper presents a 3D continuum damage mechanics (CDM) model to investigate and assess the mechanical behaviors of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates subjected to pull-through failure. The proposed model based on the use of intralaminar and interlaminar damage models is established and implemented by means of a user-defined subroutine VUMAT for Abaqus/Explicit. The novelty lies in the material model integrating the thresholds preset by the semianalytical approximation approach, which largely eliminates unnecessary fracture angle enumerations in Puck's IFF theory, coupled with the simple parabolic interpolation search (SPIS) technique for optimal fracture angle search, considerably reducing the computational burden. Moreover, the numerical results compare well with experiments, effectively replicating the load-displacement response, damage modes, failure behaviors and damaged areas. This study provides an accurate and efficient computational methodology to analyze pull-through failures, enhancing the damage modeling and predictive capabilities for composite joints under out-of-plane loads.

Abstract:With fiber-reinforced Polymers (FRPs) widely used in aircraft, design and analysis of the mechanical performance and stability of structures and parts made of FRPs with various open-holes become very important. Currently, accurately predicting the failure patterns and ultimate strength of open-hole FRP structures remains very challenging. In this paper, a three-dimensional progressive damage model based on Puck's criterion on unidirectional FRP laminates has been developed. More importantly, a scaling algorithm that can differentiate the shear deformation modes and automatically modify the shear toughness has been proposed and implemented in the model. With this modified shear damage evolution law, our model accurately estimates the tensile strengths and captures the failure pattern of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) panels consist of different stacking schemes with large open-holes in the middle. Furthermore, our model results point out that in panels of [±45]5 stacking scheme the inter-laminar stresses, although relatively small in magnitude, have a significant influence on the damage initiation locations.

Abstract:A novel three-dimensional damage model based on continuum damage mechanics (CDM) is established for the analysis of damage and fracture in woven carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates. The damage model was developed in LS-DYNA, a nonlinear explicit finite element software, and the model was incorporated with the user-defined material. The multiple dimensions damage model was applied to predict the intralaminar damage initiation and propagation. A cohesive zone model was used to sim-ulate the delamination induced by interlaminar cracks. The simulation results of four different impact energies (5 J, 8 J, 10 J, and 15 J) were analysed by impact responses. Moreover, the results of different damage modes and fracture modes of two representative ply orientations ([0]8 and [45]8) are discussed in detail.The impact peak force, energy absorption, and maximum crack length in the results of simulating woven carbon fibre laminated composites with different ply orientations are within 5% of the experimen-tal results. Accordingly, the established model can accurately predict the crack evolution of [0]8 and [45]8, thus demonstrating that the proposed methodology is more suitable for damage simulations of woven CFRP laminates with different ply orientations under low velocity impact than existing methods.(c) 2022 The Authors. Abstract:Journal of Thermoplastic Composite Materials, Ahead of Print. Discontinuous-long-fibre (DLF) composites fabricated from pre-impregnated unidirectional (UD) fibre chips are susceptible to structural deficiency. The in-plane highly anisotropic mechanical properties of the chips combined with the random nature of fibre orientation causes local weaknesses within the material when fibres are perpendicular to the load. Recent experimental results have shown that using woven-fibre chips could improve the performance of DLF composites by increasing their average mechanical properties and reducing their variability. To better understand the underlying phenomenon giving an advantage to the woven chips, a finite element model was developed to predict the mechanical properties obtained from a standard tensile test. DLF chips were modelled based on a voxel method where random chip positions were generated by an algorithm developed in this work. ANSYS® software was utilized to model the non-linear response associated with progressive damage of the composite. The maximum stress and the Puck failure criteria were employed to define damage initiation for the woven and UD fibres, respectively. Tensile modulus predictions for both types of chips showed good results when compared to experimental data. Strength predictions for the UD fibres also showed good correlation with experimental results, but the model overestimated the strength of the woven-fibre DLF composite. It appeared that the failure of the UD-fibre composites was associated with matrix failure (transverse tension and in-plane shear). Woven-fibre composites, however, showed damage modes linked to both fibre failure (longitudinal tension) and matrix failure (transverse tension and in-plane shear).

Abstract:This study focuses on the numerical analysis and experimental evaluation of failures and damages in the bolted joints of CFRP composite laminates under tensile loads. Firstly, failure criteria for fiber and matrix are established based on the Puck/LaRC failure criteria and in-situ strength theory. A mechanical model for composite damage analysis is established by adopting the nonlinear stiffness degradation method. Secondly, the tensile properties of composite laminates and perforated plates are analyzed using a mechanical model developed above. Finally, we conducted an experimental investigation of the composite joints and finite element analysis of their failure and damage evolution. The comparison between the calculated and experimental results demonstrated that the employed mechanical model and calculation method could accurately predict the strength and damage of carbon fiber composite joints under tensile loads. Moreover, to evaluate the fracture angle in matrix failures, we proposed a new method, which is found to be beneficial in improving the accuracy and efficiency of evaluating fracture angles.

Abstract:Continuum damage mechanics model with consideration of crack direction is developed for the prediction of fracture behavior in fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites under quasi-static load. Traditional continuum damage mechanics (CDM) models cannot well predict the crack propagation path in the development state of discrete crack. The crack direction parameter is introduced as a major factor with damage variable for damage propagation and failure analysis. The CDM model, which has the capability to reliably predict the initiation and direction of crack propagation while analysing the multi failure of FRP composites, is proposed by introducing crack direction parameter to material property degradation method. Failure criteria is set up according to the behavior of FRP composites for damage initiation, and fracture-mechanics-based energy release rate criteria is employed for damage evolution. APDL is used to simulate crack propagation, ultimate strength and complex failure behavior of FRP composite structure for this model. Results from the previous researches, when compared with those of this model, showed good agreement, thus demonstrating that proposed methodology can be used for simulation of FRP composite damage failure and strength prediction.

Abstract:In the present work, nonlinear mechanical response of laminated composite structures is investigated by a constitutive numerical model based on damage mechanics. A numerical method is included in progressive damage analysis to simulate the damage accumulation and failure response of composite structures under service load conditions. This model is capable of predicting the residual strength and residual stiffness of laminate with arbitrary lay-up and geometry. The state-of-the-art progressive damage model exploits a set of stress-based Hashin-type criteria and a set of appropriate degradation rule of ply discount. The constitutive model is developed wherein the damage initiation criteria are based on Hashin failure criterion for damage evolution. The proposed progressive damage model involves the steps of stress analysis, failure analysis, and material properties degradation. This work involves a comprehensive study of quasi-isotropic elliptical hole specimen to develop the failure model. Overall, the results of the exercise aid in design applications to predict the impact of progressive damage in aircraft composite structures under service loads.

Abstract:Based on the CDM theory, an energy-based stiffness degradation method is proposed to predict the progressive failure properties of the Al–carbon fiber/epoxy composite laminates. For carbon fiber/epoxy composites, three failure modes: fiber breakage, matrix cracking and fiber/matrix interface failure are included in the present model. A 3D finite element technique including the multiframe restart analysis and the arc-length algorithm is developed to perform the progressive failure analysis. The calculated load–displacement curve and the final failure strength of structure are compared with those obtained from experiments and other existing models. This work provides a progressive understanding of the damage initiation and propagation behaviors of composite laminated structures above.

Abstract:In fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite laminate structures operating under fluctuating stresses, interface delamination is seen as one of the significant damage mechanisms. The constant degradation of their relatively low interlaminar strength and stiffness are the primary reasons for delamination. This study develops an interlaminar fatigue damage model to quantify the mechanics of the damage process and address the reliability of composite structures. The model considers the failure process in two stages: (1) damage due to degradation of interlaminar elastic properties, and (2) damage due to dissipation of fracture energy through the damage evolution process. The model is examined for a case study of mode I fatigue loading of a carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite laminate. The results show that the interlaminar normal stress is confined to the crack front region, with tensile stress peaks at 70% of the interlaminar strength. Furthermore, a stable interface crack growth is predicted initially, followed by a sudden crack "jump" at 14,000 cycles. The simulation results are compared with the experimental data, with very good agreement, showing a successful validation of the fatigue model.

Abstract:A continuum damage mechanics model for composites, considering the intralaminar (fibre and matrix failure) and interlaminar failure, was proposed to predict the progressive damage behavior of bolted joints. Based on Tsai-Wu strength criterion, a new failure-judgement formula was developed to distinguish the intralaminar and interlaminar failure. An exponent material degradation model was introduced to simulate the damage evolution of the composite. A continuum damage mechanics model was established to analyze the effect of 0° ply ratio and bolt diameter on the bearing characteristic of the composite bolted joints. The predicted results exhibit good agreement with the experimental results. These results show that high 0° ply ratio induces the shear-out failure of the composite bolted joints, decreasing the structural bearing capability. Increasing the bolt diameter can restrain the damage of the composite laminate and improve the bearing strength of the composite bolted joints.

Abstract:Accurate structural analyses of continuous fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs) are imperative for diverse engineering applications, demanding efficient material constitutive models. Nonetheless, the constitutive modeling of FRPs is complicated by the nonlinear behavior resulting from internal damages and the inherent plasticity. Consequently, this study presents an innovative anisotropic constitutive model for FRPs, designed to adeptly capture both the damage evolution and plasticity. All requisite parameters can be easily obtained through fundamental mechanical tests, rendering the model practical and user-friendly. The model utilizes the three-dimensional Puck criteria to determine damages, initiating the evolution process through a combination of continuum damage mechanics and linear stiffness attenuation methods. This evolution is coupled with a one-parameter plastic model. Subsequently, the numerical implementation method, integrated into ANSYS, is detailed. This emphasizes the Cauchy stress and consistent tangent stiffness solution strategy. Finally, the effectiveness of the developed model is demonstrated through comprehensive verification, encompassing existing biaxial tension and open-hole-tension tests conducted on carbon and glass FRP laminates. The simulation results exhibit a remarkable correspondence with the experimental data, validating the reliability and accuracy of the proposed model.

Abstract:A progressive damage and failure model for fiber-reinforced laminated composites is developed in combination of finite element procedure and micromechanical model based on a unit cell. The micromechanical model can be used to evaluate failure criteria at the micro-level with fiber and matrix material properties rather than laminate material parameters. Once either of the constituents has damaged, the corresponding material properties are degraded by the damage factor. The micromechanical model and the damage theory are implemented in the finite software to model the damage progression and compute the ultimate strength of the composite laminates containing a hole. The simulation results of this model are compared with a model that is used in the failure criteria at the macro-level. The predicted strengths for both models are furthermore compared with the experimental results, and a well agreement in the simulation and experimental results is revealed.

Abstract:Interaction mechanism between the intralaminar damage and interlaminar delamination of composite laminates is always a challenging issue. It is important to consider the progressive failure and strain softening behaviors simultaneously during the damage modeling and numerical simulation of composites using FEA. This paper performs three-dimensional finite element analysis of the progressive failure and strain localization of composites using FEA. An intralaminar progressive failure model based on the strain components is proposed and the nonlinear cohesive model is used to predict the delamination growth. In particular, the nonlocal integral theory which introduces a length scale into the governing equations is used to regularize the strain localization problems of composite structures. Special finite element codes are developed using ABAQUS to predict the intralaminar and interlaminar damage evolution of composites simultaneously. The carbon fiber/epoxy composite laminates with a central hole demonstrates the developed theoretical models and numerical algorithm by discussing the effects of the mesh sizes and layups patterns. It is shown the strain localization problem can be well solved in the progressive failure analysis of composites when the energy dissipation due to the damage of the fiber, matrix and interface occurs at a relatively wide area.

Abstract:A damage model for transverse matrix cracks in composite laminates under fatigue loading was presented in this paper. The model was prosed based on the theory of continuum damage mechanics (CDM) at macro level and could capture the 'edge effect' of matrix cracks in composite laminate under fatigue loading. To obtain the constitutive equation of UD lamina containing transverse matrix cracks, a polynomial Gibbs free energy function was derived, and a macro damage parameter was introduced to characterize the influence of matrix cracks on multidirectional stiffness properties of UD composite. To predict the initiation and evolution of matrix cracks, a previously deduced initial crack initiation life function and a Paris-like equation in terms of damage driving force were employed, respectively. Prediction results of two cross-ply laminates under fatigue loading with different stress levels were compared to the experimental results and prediction results obtained from previously proposed model. The comparison results indicate the presented model is more effective and reliable in predicting the initiation and evolution of matrix cracks and the corresponding stiffness degradation in composite laminates under fatigue loading.

Abstract:Experimental and finite element research was conducted on the bolted interference fit of a single-lap laminated structure to reveal the damage propagation mechanism and strength change law. A typical single-lap statically loading experiment was performed, and a finite element damage prediction model was built based on intralaminar progress damage theory. The model was programmed with a user subroutine and an interlaminar cohesive zone method. The deformation and damage propagation of the specimen were analyzed, and the failure mechanism of intralaminar and interlaminar damage during loading was discussed. The effect of secondary bending moment on load translation and damage distribution was revealed. The experimental and simulated load-displacement curves were compared to validate the developed model's reliability, and the ultimate bearing strengths under different fit percentages were predicted. An optimal percentage was also recommended.

Abstract:Stiffness degradation and progressive failure of composite laminates are complex processes involving evolution and multi-mode interactions among fiber fractures, intra-ply matrix cracks and inter-ply delaminations. This paper presents a novel finite element model capable of explicitly treating such discrete failures in laminates of random layup. Matching of nodes is guaranteed at potential crack bifurcations to ensure correct displacement jumps near crack tips and explicit load transfer among cracks. The model is entirely geometry-based (no mesh prerequisite) with distinct segments assembled together using surface-based tie constraints, and thus requires no element partitioning or enrichment. Several numerical examples are included to demonstrate the model's ability to generate results that are in qualitative and quantitative agreement with experimental observations on both damage evolution and tensile strength of specimens. The present model is believed unique in realizing simultaneous and accurate coupling of all three types of failures in laminates having arbitrary ply angles and layup.

Abstract:This paper presents a progressive damage model (PDM) based on the 3D Hashin failure criterion within the ABAQUS/ExplicitTM 2021 framework via a VUMAT subroutine, enhancing the characterization of the mechanical performance and damage evolution in the elastic and softening stages of composite materials via the accurate calculation of damage variables and accommodation of non-monotonic loading conditions. In the subsequent multi-level verification, it is found that the model accurately simulates the primary failure modes at the element level and diminishes the influence of element size, ensuring a reliable behavior representation under non-monotonic loading. At the laminate level, it also accurately forecasts the elastic behavior and damage evolution in open-hole lamina and laminates, demonstrating the final crack band at ultimate failure. This paper also emphasizes the importance of correct characteristic length selection and how to minimize mesh size impact by selecting appropriate values. Compared to ABAQUS's built-in 2D model, the 3D VUMAT subroutine shows superior accuracy and effectiveness, proving its value in characterizing the mechanical behavior and damage mechanisms of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) materials. The enhanced 3D PDM accurately characterizes the softening processes in composite materials under simple or complex stress states during monotonic or non-monotonic loading, effectively minimizes the mesh dependency, and reasonably captures failure crack bands, making it suitable for future simulations and resolutions of numerical issues in composite material models under complex, three-dimensional stress states.
