Abstract:A novel empirical force field CRACK was developed for n-alkane that allowed for covalent bond breaking and forming, and can be used to investigate the pyrolysis of alkanes by classical molecular dynamics simulation (MD). The shape of CRACK potential-energy curve was for the pyrolysis reactions, with a deep harmonic well, an activation energy barrier and another shallow Lennard-Jones well. To validate CRACK force field, classical MD was performed to simulate the pyrolysis reactions of n-octane and n-decane. The defined pyrolytic temperature Tp could be adjusted by the displacement constant de in accord with the pyrolysis energy barrier presented by CRACK. Tp of n-octane was found higher than that of n-decane at the same de is consistent with the pyrolysis fundamentals. The results of time histories of pyrolysis reactions and of distribution of pyrolysis product revealed that CRACK force field certainly reflected the recombination between different molecules. The microscopic pyrolysis kinetics was discussed and the pyrolysis reaction was found to reach its equilibrium within the simulation time 100ps. The evaluated rate constant in apparent first order increased with the elevated temperature or the decreased value of de. The distribution of the pyrolysis products was analyzed in details and was compared with the experimental data. The results demonstrate that CRACK force field can be applied to predict the product distribution at least qualitatively by MD.

Abstract:The fracture behavior of fiber-ceramics like C/C-SiC strongly depends on the initial damage arising during the production process. We study the transverse cracking of the 90{\deg} ply in [0/90]S cross-ply laminates due to the thermochemical degradation of the matrix material during the carbonization process by means of a discrete element method. The crack morphology strongly depends on the fiber-matrix interface properties, the transverse ply thickness as well as on the carbonization process itself. To model the 90{\deg} ply a two-dimensional triangular lattice of springs is constructed where nodes of the lattice represent fibers. Springs with random breaking thresholds model the disordered matrix material and interfaces. The spring-lattice is coupled by interface springs to two rigid bars which capture the two 0{\deg} plies or adjacent sublaminates in the model. Molecular dynamics simulation is used to follow the time evolution of the model system. It was found that under gradual heating of the specimen, after some distributed cracking, segmentation cracks occur in the 90{\deg} ply which then develop into a saturated state where the ply cannot support additional load. The dependence of the micro-structure of damage on the ply thickness and on the disorder in spring properties is also studied. Crack density and porosity of the system are monitored as a function of the temperature and compared to an analytic approach and experiments.

Abstract:In the assessment of wood charring, it was believed for a long time that physicochemical processes were responsible for the creation of cracking patterns on the charring wood surface. This implied no possibility to rigorously explain the crack topology. In this paper we show instead that below the pyrolysis temperatures, a primary global macro-crack pattern is already completely established by means of a thermomechanical instability phenomenon. First we report experimental observations of the crack patterns on orthotropic (wood) and isotropic (Medium Density Fibreboard) materials in inert atmosphere. Then we solve the 3D thermomechanical buckling problem numerically by using the Finite Element Method, and show that the different crack topologies can be explained qualitatively by the simultaneous thermal expansion and softening, taking into account the directional dependence of the elastic properties. Finally, we formulate a 2D model for a soft layer bonded to an elastic substrate, and find an equation predicting the inter-crack distance in the main crack-pattern for the orthotropic case. We also derive a formula for the critical thermal stress above which the plane surface will wrinkle and buckle. The results can be used for finding new ways to prevent or delay the crack formation, leading to improved fire safety of wood-based products.

Abstract:A set of pyrolysis experiments were conducted on fir in inert atmosphere and different ambient pressures, to investigate the char shrinkage and cracking during combustion. The results show that the grain effect influences the char shrinkage. The shrinkage parallel to grain is only 1/4 of the shrinkage perpendicular to grain. The strong restriction on shrinkage parallel to grain leads to the major cracking perpendicular to the grain direction, whereas the cracking parallel to grain is relatively weak with only shallow and random fissures produced. The shrinkage gradient at cracking time increases with increasing heat flux and decreasing ambient pressure while the surface density behaves oppositely. The number of fissures is strongly affected by these two parameters and an empirical correlation is developed for predicting the number of fissures. Increasing the ambient pressure will enhance shrinkage, leading to early cracking with relatively low shrinkage gradient. Under the current experimental conditions, the occurrence of cracking requires a shrinkage gradient greater than 35m−1 and a surface density lower than 0.8 of the original density.

Abstract:Thermally-induced cracking typically occurs during the cooling stage of various manufacturing processes, and is commonly seen in multiphase or the joints of dissimilar materials due to mismatch in their thermo-mechanical properties, such as thermal expansion, elastic-plastic deformation and, in some cases, phase transformation. However, the underlying cracking mechanism associated with local microstructure is still elusive. To improve the mechanistic understanding of thermal cracking, this work uses the diffusion-bonded 9Cr-1Mo steel as an example to study the key microstructural variables, such as interfacial phases, voids, grain boundary migration and crystallographic orientations. Meanwhile, a temperature-dependent crystal plasticity model coupled with a cohesive zone model is developed to provide more insights into the thermal-induced stress distribution at the grain scale. It is found that the stress at the void-free boundary of martensite and ferrite is dominated by shear, and its magnitude is insufficient to nucleate cracks. Whereas voids at phase boundaries can induce significant tensile stress, resulting in cracking at the phase boundaries as well as diffusion-bonded interfaces. Also, the occurrence of interfacial grain boundary migration plays an important role in local stress distribution. These microstructure features and their evolution are experimentally observed and used to verify the developed crystal plasticity models. These findings enhance the understanding of the influence of microstructure features on thermal cracking and provide a guide to designing and fabricating the microstructure with improved thermal crack resistance in various manufacturing processes.

Experimental Investigations of Laminar and Turbulent Burning Velocities of Thermally Cracked Hydrocarbon Fuels

Abstract:A comprehensive understanding of the flame propagation characteristics of thermally cracked fuels is crucial for developing advanced scramjets using regenerative cooling techniques. In the present study, both the laminar and turbulent burning velocities of thermally cracked hydrocarbon fuels at typical pyrolysis temperatures were systematically measured using a newly developed, fan-stirred, constant-volume bomb. The results show that variations in fuel composition have no significant influence on the laminar burning velocities of pyrolysis gases and liquids. In addition, the promotional effects of pyrolysis gas on flame propagation of thermally cracked fuel depend on the gas-production rate and equivalence ratio. The normalized turbulent burning velocities of typical thermally cracked fuels can be well scaled using a power law with regard to the turbulent Reynolds number (ReT, f). The fitting exponents gradually increase with increasing equivalence ratio, indicating a stronger promotional effect by turbulence for fuel-rich flames. For premixed turbulent flames in the wrinkled/corrugated flamelet regimes, turbulence and preferential diffusion simultaneously affect the flame propagation process. The wrinkling effects of turbulence are weakened by thermal-diffusional stability when the combustible mixture has an effective Lewis number (Leeff) greater than one. By contrast, the wrinkling process is promoted by thermal-diffusional instability, and the flame propagation is simultaneously enhanced by turbulence and thermal-diffusional instability. A unified scaling law for normalized turbulent burning velocities of thermally cracked fuels is proposed based on ReT,f Leeff–0.6, which accounts for the impacts of preferential diffusion. The effective Lewis number corrected scaling law can be applied to thermally cracked fuels at different pyrolysis temperatures, with a maximum relative error not exceeding 15%.

Abstract:Mean void growth-based spall models that avoid the complications of nucleation have been successfully applied to the problem of ductile spallation. However, similar models based on mean crack growth, applicable to brittle spallation, are not promising. This is because it remains to be demonstrated how an appropriate mean crack size is chosen to identify the brittle spall strength as the threshold pressure for crack growth. In the authors' view, the solidity evolution is not merely a consequence of the nucleation and growth of cracks but also determined by the crack straining caused by the relaxed tensile pressure. This paper presents a crack straining-based spall model which assumes that the inelastic volumetric strain caused by the relaxed tensile pressure at a critical fragment volume is the main factor governing the solidity evolution during the process of coalescence and fragmentation. Such an approach makes the modelling of brittle spall compatible with that of ductile. The developed model requires only two additional parameters to those required by the chosen constitutive model and equation of state. We present the comparisons between experimental and computational simulation of the free surface velocity history of the target in a plane impact plate experiment. These show very good agreement.

Abstract:Fracture initiation and propagation in brittle materials is promoted in surface-reactive (sorptive) environments, a phenomenon known as subcritical crack growth (SCG). Laboratory measured crack-propagation velocity vs. stress intensity factor relationships typically exhibit highly nonlinear, multi-stage characteristics that are sensitive to environmental factors such as adsorbate concentration and temperature. For practical purposes, empirical relationships (e.g., a power law) have been used to describe this complex phenomenon. However, how the overall SCG behavior emerges from the underlying fundamental processes near the crack tip, such as the interaction of the crack surfaces separated by only a few nanometers and mass transport within the nano-confined space, is still not well understood. This paper develops a mechanistic, surface-force-based fracture theory (SFFT) which integrates surface force models, fluid transport models, and linear elastic fracture mechanics to quantitatively explain the multi-stage characteristics of SCG in brittle solids. A numerical model is developed based on SFFT and solved through an implicit partitioned scheme for efficiency and modularity. The results are validated by Wiederhorn's data on crack propagation in soda-lime glasses at a wide range of relative humidity levels. We show that, for the first time, the entire range of an SCG curve can be captured by a single physics-based model. The predicted SCG curves reveal that the development of repulsive disjoining pressure behind the crack tip can be responsible for the reduced apparent fracture toughness in a sorptive environment. The shape of the SCG curve, and its changes with respect to the environment, is found to critically depend on the assumed transport models.

Abstract:The pore structure of coal chars plays a critical role during the combustion of char particles. In order to predict the char combustion behavior, a mathematical model was developed to study the evolution of the pore fractal dimension during coal pyrolysis. The models have similar fractal dimension, porosity and density as real coal particles. Group function theory was used to describe the coal structure. Suppose the bulge of particles caused by pressure, and the simulation condition is same as the experiment. Comparison of the simulation result with experimental data showed that the evolution of the fractal dimension during coal pyrolysis could be reasonably predicted by the model.

Abstract:An improved fragmentation and diffusion (FD) coal pyrolysis model was developed based on the diffusivity correlation for the diffusion in fractal pores. Fitting functions to describe the continuous variation of pore structure during pyrolysis were obtained by fitting experimental data for coal pyrolysis in a drop-tube furnace. With the empirical functions as inputs, the improved FD model was used to simulate the pyrolysis in the drop-tube furnace and the model proved to be reliable. With this model, we found that the physical structure of char affects the diffusion, which then influences the pyrolysis. The effects of the four structural parameters (fractal dimension, porosity, average pore diameter, and specific surface area) are investigated quantitatively.

Dynamical Fracture Instabilities Due to Local Hyperelasticity at Crack Tips

Abstract:When materials break and cracks propagate, bonds between atoms are broken generating two new material surfaces. Most existing theories of fracture assume a linear elastic stress-strain law. However, the relation between stress and strain in real solids is strongly nonlinear due to large deformation near a moving crack tip, a phenomenon referred to as hyperelasticity or nonlinear elasticity. Cracks moving at low speeds create atomically flat mirror-like surfaces, whereas cracks at higher speeds leave misty and hackly fracture surfaces. This change in fracture surface morphology is a universal phenomenon found in a wide range of different brittle materials, but the underlying physical reason has been debated over an extensive period. Using massively parallel large-scale atomistic simulations employing a new, simple atomistic material model allowing a systematic transition from linear elastic to strongly nonlinear material behaviors, we show that hyperelasticity can play a governing role in dynamical crack tip instabilities in fracture of brittle materials. We report a generalized model that treats the instability problem as a competition between different mechanisms controlled by local stress field and local energy flow near the crack tip. Our results indicate that the fracture instabilities do not only appear in defected materials, but instead are an intrinsic phenomenon of dynamical fracture. Our findings help to explain controversial experimental and computational results, including experimental observation of crack propagation at speeds beyond the shear wave speed in rubber-like materials.
MD modeling of cracks in clay at the nanoscale

Abstract:Cracks in clay are significant in geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering (e.g., embankment erosion and stability of landfill cover systems). This article studies the mechanism of nucleation and growth of cracks in clay at the nanoscale through full-scale molecular dynamics simulations. The clay adopted is pyrophyllite, and the force field is CLAYFF. The crack formation in a pyrophyllite clay layer is evaluated under uniaxial tension and simple shear. The numerical results show that cracks in the nanoscale pyrophyllite clay layer are brittle and strain-rate dependent. Small strain rate results in low ultimate tensile/shear strength. As strain rate increases, clay crack shifts from a single-crack pattern to a multiple-crack one. The cracking mechanism is investigated from bond breakage analysis at the atomic scale. It is found that the first bond breakage occurs in the silicon-surface oxygen bond. As a crack propagates, the relative percentage of broken silicon-surface oxygen bonds is the smallest compared to other types of metal-oxygen interactions, demonstrating that the atomic interaction between silicon and surface oxygen atoms is the strongest. To understand the propagation of cracks, we also study the stress intensity factor and energy release rate of pyrophyllite and their size dependence at the atomic scale.
Structural Deformation of Woody Slab During Pyrolysis and Combustion

Abstract:A geometry model for describing the structural change of the sample is firstly built based on the observa-tion of the pyrolysis and combustion of woody slabs. Shrinkage coefficient and cracking coefficient are proposed to estimate the structural change of the sample quantitatively. Three species,which are fir,birch and floor board,are used for the experiment on pyrolysis and combustion. The samples are shaped as 100,mm×100,mm×15,mm. The heat fluxes for the experiment on the pyrolysis and combustion of wood are 15,kW/m2,30,kW/m2 and 50,kW/m2, respectively. The characteristics of the structural changes of the sample during the process of pyrolysis and combustion are quantitatively discussed,and the effect of heat flux and species on the structural change of the sample is investi-gated. Finally,the influence of structural change on the thermal behavior of the sample during the process is exten-sively estimated.
Characteristics of crack growth in brittle solids with the effects of material heterogeneity and multi-crack interaction

Abstract:Despite the extensive research on crack propagation in brittle solids, numerous unexplored problems still necessitate in-depth study. In this work, we focus on numerical modeling of multi-crack growth, aiming to explore the effect of material heterogeneity and multi-crack interaction on this process. To do this, an improved singular-finite element method (singular-FEM) is proposed with incorporation of heterogeneity and crack interaction. An efficient algorithm is proposed for simulating multi-crack propagation and interaction. Stress singularity near crack tip is reproduced by the singular elements. The singular-FEM is convenient and cost-effective, as the zone far away from crack tips is directly discretized using linear elements, in contrast to the quadratic or transition elements utilized in traditional FEM. Next, the proposed method is validated through benchmark study. Numerical results demonstrate that the superiority of the singular-FEM, which combines the merits of low cost and high accuracy. Then, the mechanics of crack growth are explored in more complex scenarios, accounting for the effects of crack interaction, loading condition and heterogeneity on crack trajectory, stress field and energy release rate. The findings reveal that the combined effect of heterogeneity and crack interaction plays a critical role in the phenomenon of crack growth, and the proposed method is capable of effectively modeling the process.

Abstract:Crack velocity and strain rate have an important influence on the dynamic fracture in brittle solids. However, the correspondence between crack velocity- and strain rate- dependent dynamic compressive responses is hardly established. In this study, a dynamic compression-based model triggered by microcrack growth of brittle solids is proposed. This dynamic model consists of the improved model of wing crack extension containing crack inclination effect, the correlation of crack velocity and strain rate, and the crack velocity-related dynamic fracture toughness. This correlation of crack velocity and strain rate is obtained by the time derivative of crack extension relating to axial strain. Crack extension relating to axial strain is obtained by use of correlation of damage relating to crack and strain. The whole variations of strain rate- (or crack velocity-) dependent stress-strain constitutive relationships from low strain rate (or crack velocity) to high strain rate (or crack velocity) are studied. The micro-mechanisms corresponding to the dynamic stress-strain curves also are explained. Moreover, a unified conclusion revealing the sensitivities of strain rate on peak axial strain epsilon(1peak) appearing at peak strength and initial tangent modulus E-ini of stress-strain curves is proposed. Influences of crack velocity and strain rate on crack initiation stress and dynamic strength are analyzed in compression. Effects of the size, inclination and friction of microcracks on dynamic strength also are illustrated. The reasonability of these proposed theoretical results is verified via the published experimental results.
The effective mechanical properties of solids with distributed rough cracks

Abstract:A statistical multi-step self-consistent (SMSSC) micromechanical model for predicting elastic and plastic properties of a three-dimensional Representative Volume Element (RVE) is proposed in this research. A body with randomly distributed rough penny-shaped microcracks is considered for the first time in which the distribution of cracks is included through different well-known statistical distributions. Initially, the solution for a rough cohesive penny-shaped crack is developed, and the relationship between crack nominal length and roughness is derived. Consequently, Crack Opening Displacement (COD) and the corresponding volume crack opening are calculated as a function of surface roughness. Next, the SMSSC is used to study the effects of nominal crack length distribution on a fractured medium's mechanical properties with a known statistical distribution of crack sizes. This is done by determining the energy release and evaluating its share in material degradation (elastic, plastic). The elastic properties calculated using SMSSC indicated that the fractality of crack trajectories leads to lower values of volume crack opening and, consequently, resulted in a lower level of stiffness degradation compared with previous smooth crack approximations. It is also reached that the statistical distribution of rough cracks influences the mechanical properties due to the interrelation between length and roughness. Regarding the plastic behavior, the proposed micromechanical methodology is implemented to construct a capped pressure-sensitive yielding potential function that explicitly highlights the influence of crack size statistical distribution on the yielding of cracked solids. It is evident that the statistical distribution of crack sizes which are interrelated with crack roughness, can significantly alter the corresponding yield surface of fractured media.
Approach to failure in porous granular materials under compression

Abstract:We investigate the approach to catastrophic failure in a model porous granular material undergoing uniaxial compression. A discrete element computational model is used to simulate both the micro-structure of the material and the complex dynamics and feedbacks involved in local fracturing and the production of crackling noise. Under strain-controlled loading micro-cracks initially nucleate in an uncorrelated way all over the sample. As loading proceeds the damage localizes into a narrow damage band inclined at 30-45 degrees to the load direction. Inside the damage band the material is crushed into a poorly-sorted mixture of mainly fine powder hosting some larger fragments. The mass probability density distribution of particles in the damage zone is a power law of exponent 2.1, similar to a value of 1.87 inferred from observations of the length distribution of wear products (gouge) in natural and laboratory faults. Dynamic bursts of radiated energy, analogous to acoustic emissions observed in laboratory experiments on porous sedimentary rocks, are identified as correlated trails or cascades of local ruptures that emerge from the stress redistribution process. As the system approaches macroscopic failure consecutive bursts become progressively more correlated. Their size distribution is also a power law, with an equivalent Gutenberg-Richter b-value of 1.22 averaged over the whole test, ranging from 3 down to 0.5 at the time of failure, all similar to those observed in laboratory tests on granular sandstone samples. The formation of the damage band itself is marked by a decrease in the average distance between consecutive bursts and an emergent power law correlation integral of event locations with a correlation dimension of 2.55, also similar to those observed in the laboratory (between 2.75 and 2.25).

Abstract:The relationship between pore structure and polymer network during coal pyrolysis was studied by analyzing the evolution of microcrystal, pore structure, and functional groups of char prepared from Naomaohu subbituminous coal by a drop‐tube furnace reactor at 600–1000 °C. The char specific surface area changes little with aliphatic bridge cleaving at temperatures lower than 700 °C; starts to increase at 800 °C with the beginning of side chain cleaving; then reaches the maximum with the methyl and methylene content together at 900 °C; finally decreases with the further cleaving of aliphatic structures at higher temperatures. Moreover, the lattice stacking height is minimum at 900 °C, indicating aliphatic structure can reduce the lattice order degree. These phenomena support the assumption in the CPD‐PS model that the side chain cleaving generates open pores and meanwhile reduces the adsorption sites in them, making the char specific surface area first increase and then decrease.This article is protected by copyright. Crack propagation in anisotropic brittle materials: from a phase-field model to a shape optimization approach

Abstract:The phase-field method is based on the energy minimization principle which is a geometric method for modeling diffusive cracks that are popularly implemented with irreversibility based on Griffith's criterion. This method requires a length-scale parameter that smooths the sharp discontinuity, which influences the diffuse band and results in mesh-sensitive fracture propagation results. Recently, a novel approach based on the optimization on Riemannian shape spaces has been proposed, where the crack path is realized by techniques from shape optimization. This approach requires the shape derivative, which is derived in a continuous sense and used for a gradient-based algorithm to minimize the energy of the system. Due to the continuous derivation of the shape derivative, this approach yields mesh-independent results. In this paper, the novel approach based on shape optimization is presented, followed by an assessment of the predicted crack path in anisotropic brittle material using numerical calculations from a phase-field model.

Statistical analysis of effective crack properties by microstructure reconstruction and phase-field modeling

Abstract:Understanding the relation between the microstructure and the material's effective behavior is an important aspect in inverse computational materials engineering. Especially in the context of localized, inelastic phenomena like plasticity and crack growth, the microstructure morphology plays a crucial role. Due to the stochastic nature of heterogeneous media, a statistical analysis over multiple simulations is necessary, since even with the same material, the simulated crack paths and effective crack lengths are highly dependent on the specific locations of microstructural features. A relevant factor that limits this type of investigation is the high cost of real microstructure data. This work presents a digital workflow for exploring the fracture properties of materials. Therein, the required statistical analyses are facilitated by an algorithm that reconstructs multiple realization of a material structure given a single example. The reconstructed structures are discretized with a regular non-conforming mesh with a diffuse interface and crack representation. Crack phase-field simulations are conducted in order to analyze the effective response. An in-depth introduction to the required methods is given together with a statistical evaluation of the conducted numerical experiments. It is concluded that the statistical variation of the effective material behavior overshadows morphological trends in the presented case. This confirms the relevance and utility of complementing simulation-based workflows with microstructure reconstruction and statistical analyses.
