Abstract:In this paper, we study a class of contracting flows of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space $${\mathbb {R}}^{n+1}$$ with speed $$r^{\alpha } \sigma _k$$, where $$\sigma _k$$ is the k-th elementary symmetric polynomial of the principal curvatures, $$\alpha \in {\mathbb {R}}^1$$, and r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin. If $$\alpha \ge k+1$$, we prove that the flow exists for all time, preserves the convexity and converges smoothly after normalisation to a sphere centred at the origin. If $$\alpha <k+1$$, a counterexample is given for the above convergence. In the case $$k=1$$ and $$\alpha \ge 2$$, we also prove that the flow converges to a round point if the initial hypersurface is weakly mean-convex and star-shaped.

Abstract:In this paper we study a contracting flow of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space ℝ^n+1 with speed f r^α K, where K is the Gauss curvature, r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin, and f is a positive and smooth function. If α≥ n+1, we prove that the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly after normalisation to a soliton, which is a sphere centred at the origin if f ≡ 1. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in the smooth category for the classical Aleksandrov problem, and resolves the dual q-Minkowski problem introduced by Huang, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang (Acta Math. 216 (2016): 325-388), for the case q<0. If α < n+1, corresponding to the case q>0, we also establish the same results for even function f and origin-symmetric initial condition, but for non-symmetric f, counterexample is given for the above smooth convergence.

We prove that for any smooth closed initial curve in ℝ 2 , the flow has a smooth solution for all time and the solution subconverges to a critical point of the functional.

Abstract:3D point data acquisition has become a practical approach for generating complex 3D shapes. Subsequent smoothing or denoising operations on these raw data sets are required before performing sophisticated modeling operations. Based on covariance analysis and constructed directional curvature, a new approach of anisotropic curvature flow is developed for filtering the point data set. By introducing a forcing term, a balanced flow equation is constructed, which allows the anisotropic diffusion flow to be restricted in the flow diffusion band of the original surface. Thus, the common problem of shape shrinkage that puzzles most current denoising approaches for point-sampled geometry is avoided. Applying dynamic balance techniques, the equation converges to the solution quickly with appealing physical interpretations. The algorithms operate directly on the discrete sample points, requiring no vertex connectivity information. They are shown to be computationally efficient, robust and simple to implement.

Abstract:Intrinsic curvature flows can be used to design Riemannian metrics by prescribed curvatures. This chapter presents three discrete curvature flow methods that are recently introduced into the engineering fields: the discrete Ricci flow and discrete Yamabe flow for surfaces with various topology, and the discrete curvature flow for hyperbolic 3-manifolds with boundaries. For each flow, we introduce its theories in both the smooth setting and the discrete setting, plus the numerical algorithms to compute it. We also provide a brief survey on their history and their link to some of the engineering applications in computer graphics, computer vision, medical imaging, computer aided design and others.

Abstract:This paper introduces a new mathematical approach to the study of time evolutions of solids K(t) in n-space whose boundaries move with velocity equal to the weighted mean curvature derived from the boundary surface energy PHI(partial derivative K(t)). These ''flat PHI curvature flows'' are limits of sequences of solutions to variational problems in which a sum of surface and bulk energy is minimized. The construction works equally well for smooth elliptic PHI's, for nondifferentiable crystalline PHI's, and for anything in between. The flows agree with classical smooth flows when the data is smooth and elliptic in any dimension and coincide with motion by crystalline curvature for polyhedral curves in the plane.
Discontinuous Galerkin Based Isogeometric Analysis for Geometric Flows and Applications in Geometric Modeling.

Abstract:We propose a method which combines isogeometric analysis with the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for second and fourth order geometric flows to generate fairing surfaces, which are composed of multiple patches. This technique can be used to tackle a challenging problem in geometric modeling–gluing multi-patches together smoothly to create complex models. Non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS), the most popular representations of geometric models developed in Computer Aided Design, are employed to describe the geometry and represent the numerical solution. Since NURBS basis functions over two different patches are independent, DG methods can be appropriately applied to glue the multiple patches together to obtain smooth solutions. We present semi-discrete DG schemes to solve the problem, and $\mathcal {L}^{2}$-stability is proved for the proposed schemes. Our method enjoys the following advantages. Firstly, the geometric flexibility of NURBS basis functions, especially the use of multiple patches, enable us to construct surface models with complex geometry and topology. Secondly, the constructed geometry is fair. Thirdly, since only the control points of the NURBS patches evolve in accordance with the geometric flows, and their number (degrees of freedom) is very small, our algorithm is very efficient. Finally, this method can be easily formulated and implemented. We apply the method in mean curvature flows and in quasi surface diffusion flows to solve various geometric modeling problems, such as minimal surface generation, surface blending and hole filling, etc. Examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of our method.
An Alternating Direction Implicit Method for Mean Curvature Flows

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the mean curvature flow, which describes the dynamics of a hypersurface whose normal velocity is determined by local mean curvature. We present a Cartesian grid-based method for solving mean curvature flows in two and three space dimensions. The present method embeds a closed hypersurface into a fixed Cartesian grid and decomposes it into multiple overlapping subsets. For each subset, extra tangential velocities are introduced such that marker points on the hypersurface only moves along grid lines. By utilizing an alternating direction implicit (ADI)-type time integration method, the subsets are evolved alternately by solving scalar parabolic partial differential equations on planar domains. The method removes the stiffness using a semi-implicit scheme and has no high-order stability constraint on time step size. Numerical examples in two and three space dimensions are presented to validate the proposed method.

A variational discretization method for mean curvature flows by the Onsager principle

Abstract:The mean curvature flow describes the evolution of a surface(a curve) with normal velocity proportional to the local mean curvature. It has many applications in mathematics, science and engineering. In this paper, we develop a numerical method for mean curvature flows by using the Onsager principle as an approximation tool. We first show that the mean curvature flow can be derived naturally from the Onsager variational principle. Then we consider a piecewisely linear approximation of the curve and derive a discrete geometric flow. The discrete flow is described by a system of ordinary differential equations for the nodes of the discrete curve. We prove that the discrete system preserve the energy dissipation structure in the framework of the Onsager principle and this implies the energy decreasing property. The ODE system can be solved by an improved Euler scheme and this leads to an efficient fully discrete scheme. We first consider the method for a simple mean curvature flow and then extend it to volume preserving mean curvature flow and also a wetting problem on substrates. Numerical examples show that the method has optimal convergence rate and works well for all the three problems.

Abstract:Over the last decades, the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method has demonstrated its excellence in accurate, higher-order numerical simulations for a wide range of applications in aerodynamics simulations. However, the development of practical, computationally accurate flow solvers for industrial applications is still in the focus of active research, and applicable boundary conditions and fluxes are also very important parts. Based on curvilinear DG method, we have developed a flow solver that can be used for solving the three-dimensional subsonic, transonic and hypersonic inviscid flows on unstructured meshes. The development covers the geometrical transformation from the real curved element to the rectilinear reference element with the hierarchical basis functions and their gradient operation in reference coordinates up to full third order. The implementation of solid wall boundary conditions is derived by the contravariant velocities, and an enhanced algorithms of Harten-Lax-van Leer with contact (HLLC) flux based on curved element is suggested. These new techniques do not require a complex geometric boundary information and are easy to implement. The simulation of subsonic, transonic and hypersonic flows shows that the linear treatment can limit the accuracy at high order and demonstrates how the boundary treatment involving curved element overcomes this restriction. In addition, such a flow solver is stable on a reasonably coarse meshes and finer ones, and has good robustness for three-dimensional flows with various geometries and velocities. For engineering practice, a reasonable accuracy can be obtained at reasonably coarse unstructured meshes.

Abstract:In this article we study Chen's flow of curves from theoreical and numerical perspectives. We investigate two settings: that of closed immersed $\omega$-circles, and immersed lines satisfying a cocompactness condition. In each of the settings our goal is to find geometric conditions that allow us to understand the global behaviour of the flow: for the cocompact case, the condition is straightforward and the argument is largely standard. For the closed case however, the argument is quite complex. The flow shrinks every initial curve to a point if it does not become singular beforehand, and we must identify a condition to ensure this behaviour as well as identify the point in order to perform the requisite rescaling. We are able to successfully conduct a full analysis of the rescaling under a curvature condition. The analysis resembles the case of the mean curvature flow more than other fourth-order curvature flow such as the elastic flow or the curve diffusion flow, despite the lack of maximum and comparison principles. Our work is informed by a numerical study of the flow, and we include a section that explains the algorithms used and gives some further simulations.

Abstract:In this paper, a second-order temporal and spatial accurate, unconditionally energy stable scheme for the binary fluid flows model on arbitrarily curved surfaces is proposed. We construct a novel surface discrete finite volume method for the surface computation with second-order spatial accuracy. The discretization can be obtained based on the surface mesh consisting of triangular grids. In order to obtain second order temporal accuracy, we apply a Crank–Nicolson-type method to the Cahn–Hilliard–Navier–Stokes system under the projection framework. The resulting system is solved by the Jacobi-type iteration method and bi-conjugate gradient stabilized method. The proposed scheme is proved to be unconditionally energy stable, which implies that a larger time step can be used. Additionally, our scheme has been proved to satisfy mass conservation property. Various numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and robustness of the proposed method.
Discrete Curvature Flow for Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds with Complete Geodesic Boundaries

Abstract:Every surface in the three dimensional Euclidean space have a canonical Riemannian metric, which induces constant Gaussian curvature and is conformal to the original metric. Discrete curvature flow is a feasible way to compute such canonical metrics. Similarly, three dimensional manifolds also admit canonical metrics, which induce constant sectional curvature. Canonical metrics on 3manifolds are valuable for the study of 3D topology and have the potential for volumetric parameterization and shape matching. This paper generalizes discrete curvature flow from surfaces to hyperbolic 3manifolds with complete geodesic boundaries. The metric deforms according to the curvature, until the curvature is constant everywhere. The theoretical results are introduced, the algorithm is explained in details, and thorough experiments are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of discrete 3-manifold curvature flow.

Abstract:We introduce a fast, robust, and user-controllable algorithm to generate surface-filling curves. We compute these curves through the gradient flow of a simple sparse energy, making our method several orders of magnitude faster than previous works. Our algorithm makes minimal assumptions on the topology and resolution of the input surface, achieving improved robustness. Our framework provides tuneable parameters that guide the shape of the output curve, making it ideal for interactive design applications.

Abstract:This paper investigates the combinatorial $\alpha$-curvature for vertex scaling of piecewise hyperbolic metrics on polyhedral surfaces, which is a parameterized generalization of the classical combinatorial curvature. A discrete uniformization theorem for combinatorial $\alpha$-curvature is established, which generalizes Gu-Guo-Luo-Sun-Wu's discrete uniformization theorem for classical combinatorial curvature. We further introduce combinatorial $\alpha$-Yamabe flow and combinatorial $\alpha$-Calabi flow for vertex scaling to find piecewise hyperbolic metrics with prescribed combinatorial $\alpha$-curvatures. To handle the potential singularities along the combinatorial curvature flows, we do surgery along the flows by edge flipping. Using the discrete conformal theory established by Gu-Guo-Luo-Sun-Wu, we prove the longtime existence and convergence of combinatorial $\alpha$-Yamabe flow and combinatorial $\alpha$-Calabi flow with surgery, which provide effective algorithms for finding piecewise hyperbolic metrics with prescribed combinatorial $\alpha$-curvatures.

Abstract:In the last 15 years, White and Huisken-Sinestrari developed a far-reaching structure theory for the mean curvature flow of mean convex hypersurfaces. Their papers provide a package of estimates and structural results that yield a precise description of singularities and of high curvature regions in a mean convex flow. In the present paper, we give a new treatment of the theory of mean convex (and k-convex) flows. This includes: (1) an estimate for derivatives of curvatures, (2) a convexity estimate, (3) a cylindrical estimate, (4) a global convergence theorem, (5) a structure theorem for ancient solutions, and (6) a partial regularity theorem. Our new proofs are both more elementary and substantially shorter than the original arguments. Our estimates are local and universal. A key ingredient in our new approach is the new non- collapsing result of Andrews. Some parts are also inspired by the work of Perelman. In a forthcoming paper, we will give a new construction of mean curvature flow with surgery based on the theorems established in the present paper.
