Abstract:Microbot (μbot)-based targeted drug delivery has attracted increasing attention due to its potential for avoiding side effects associated with systemic delivery. To date, most μbots are rigid. When rolling on surfaces, they exhibit substantial slip due to the liquid lubrication layer. Here, we introduce magnetically controlled soft rollers based on Pickering emulsions that, because of their intrinsic deformability, fundamentally change the nature of the lubrication layer and roll like deflated tires. With a large contact area between μbot and wall, soft μbots exhibit tractions higher than their rigid counterparts, results that we support with both theory and simulation. Upon changing the external field, surface particles can be reconfigured, strongly influencing both the translation speed and traction. These μbots can also be destabilized upon pH changes and used to deliver their contents to a desired location, overcoming the limitations of low translation efficiency and drug loading capacity associated with rigid structures.
Adolescent marijuana and alcohol use: the role of parents and peers revisited.

Abstract:The present study focuses on the role of deviant peers, parent child-rearing practices, and parent alcohol use in the initiation of marijuana and alcohol use during adolescence. Composite measures of Deviant Peers and Parental Monitoring were used that incorporate both the parents' and child's report of these variables as well as the parents' report of their own alcohol use and the adolescent's report of marijuana and alcohol use. Multiple regression analyses incorporating Parental Monitoring, Mother Alcohol Use, and Deviant Peers as independent variables revealed significant standardized b coefficients for Deviant Peers predicting alcohol use, and both Parental Monitoring and Deviant Peers predicting marijuana use. A profile analysis showed that delinquent drug users had lower parental monitoring and more deviant peers than nondelinquent drug users or abstainers. However, a group of youngsters were identified who reported some substance use but were not antisocial; these youngsters resembled abstainers in respect to the degree that they were monitored by parents and exposed to deviant peers. Taking these results into consideration, along with longitudinal studies on adolescent delinquency and adult alcoholism, it is hypothesized that adolescent delinquency and drug use are outcomes of disrupted family processes and exposure to deviant peers, and that adolescents who are both antisocial and use drugs may be at higher risk for eventual substance abuse.

Abstract:Microscale devices must overcome fluid reversibility to propel themselves in environments where viscous forces dominate. One approach, used by colloidal microwheels (μwheels) consisting of superparamagnetic particles assembled and powered by rotating ac magnetic fields, is to employ a nearby surface to provide friction. Here, we used total internal reflection microscopy to show that individual 8.3 μm particles roll inefficiently with significant slip because of a particle-surface fluid gap of 20-80 nm. We determined that both gap width and slip increase with the increasing particle rotation rate when the load force is provided by gravity alone, thus providing an upper bound on translational velocity. By imposing an additional load force with a dc magnetic field gradient superimposed on the ac field, we were able to decrease the gap width and thereby enhance translation velocities. For example, an additional load force of 0.2 Fg provided by a dc field gradient increased the translational velocity from 40 to 80 μm/s for a 40 Hz rotation rate. The translation velocity increases with the decreasing gap width whether the gap is varied by dc field gradient-induced load forces or by reducing the Debye length with salt. These results present a strategy to accelerate surface-enabled rolling of microscale particles and open the possibility of high-speed μwheel rolling independent of the gravitational field.

Abstract:Effective propulsion of untethered micro-/nanorobots at low Reynolds numbers can offer possibilities for promising biomedical applications. Diverse locomotion modes have been proposed for propulsion at a small scale, and rolling is an alternative method which is significantly effective. Here, we demonstrate mass produced magnetic wheel-shape flaky microswimmers fabricated via a simple and cost-effective method. Locomotion behaviors under vertical rotating magnetic fields were studied, and the propulsion mechanisms were analyzed. They exhibited two modes to swim forward as tumbling and rolling, which relied on the actuating field and the fluid. The rolling microswimmers could be propelled and steered precisely and a high velocity can be easily reached. Forward velocity and transition frequency within diverse fields and fluids were analyzed, and side slip effects when rolling at a camber angle were also observed. Such microswimmers synthesized in bulk with alternative locomotion modes and excellent swimming performances may have potential in low Reynolds number fluids.

Abstract:Wheels have been commonly used for locomotion in mobile robots and transportation systems because of their simple structure and energy efficiency. However, the performance of wheels in overcoming obstacles is limited compared with their advantages in driving on normal flat ground. Here, we present a variable-stiffness wheel inspired by the surface tension of a liquid droplet. In a liquid droplet, as the cohesive force of the outermost liquid molecules increases, the net force pulling the liquid molecules inward also increases. This leads to high surface tension, resulting in the liquid droplet reverting to a circular shape from its distorted shape induced by gravitational forces. Similarly, the shape and stiffness of a wheel were controlled by changing the traction force at the outermost smart chain block. As the tension of the wire spokes connected to each chain block increased, the wheel characteristics reflected those of a general circular-rigid wheel, which has an advantage in high-speed locomotion on normal flat ground. Conversely, the modulus of the wheel decreased as the tension of the wire spoke decreased, and the wheel was easily deformed according to the shape of obstacles. This makes the wheel suitable for overcoming obstacles without requiring complex control or sensing systems. On the basis of this mechanism, a wheel was applied to a two-wheeled wheelchair system weighing 120 kilograms, and the state transition between a circular high-modulus state and a deformable low-modulus state was realized in real time when the wheelchair was driven in an outdoor environment.

Abstract:Mimicry of motile microorganisms offers new concepts and strategies to design and manipulate microrobots. As a representative instance, Escherichia coli switches its motility between swimming and tumbling to adapt to surroundings. Inspired by this, we present a tubular microrobot behaving rolling and tumbling motion modes analogous to the motion of Escherichia coli, as a result of the anisotropic magnetized status with radially magnetized status at rolling and longitudinally magnetized one at tumbling. The motion behavior of microrobot as rolling or tumbling is determined by the frequency of rotating magnetic field. The threshold frequency for switching is closely related to the amplitude of magnetic field, viscosity of solution and size of microrobot. The net locomotion near substrate comes from the friction and pressure, and the motion switching is due to the magnetized statuses and discrepancy of drag force. The switch from rolling to tumbling endows the microrobot with adaptive locomotion to cross obstacles. Furthermore, microfluidic manipulation through rotational microrobot is achieved based on the local microvortex, which is generated from the hydrodynamic interaction between microrobot and substrate. This manipulation is applied in cargo delivery and release by altering surrounding microfluid via switchable motion modes. Using Surface-Motions for Locomotion of Microscopic Robots in Viscous Fluids

Abstract:Microscopic robots could perform tasks with high spatial precision, such as acting in biological tissues on the scale of individual cells, provided they can reach precise locations. This paper evaluates the feasibility of in vivo locomotion for micron-size robots. Two appealing methods rely only on surface motions: steady tangential motion and small amplitude oscillations. These methods contrast with common microorganism propulsion based on flagella or cilia, which are more likely to damage nearby cells if used by robots made of stiff materials. The power potentially available to robots in tissue supports speeds ranging from one to hundreds of microns per second, over the range of viscosities found in biological tissue. We discuss design trade-offs among propulsion method, speed, power, shear forces and robot shape, and relate those choices to robot task requirements. This study shows that realizing such locomotion requires substantial improvements in fabrication capabilities and material properties over current technology.

Abstract:A magnetic microroller, inspired by leukocytes (also called white blood cells, WBCs) in the microcirculatory system, represents a promising candidate for targeted drug delivery. However, the rolling dynamics of an individual microroller in response to controlled changes in shear stress and magnetic fields remains largely unknown. Here, we develop a mesoscopic model of the WBC-inspired microroller to investigate its locomotion behavior inside blood vessels under different shear stresses and magnetic torques. We find that the microroller can roll along with the blood flow or move against the bloodstream depending upon the competition between the applied magnetic torque and fluid shear stress. Our simulations reveal that the microroller can achieve precise navigation under low shear stress levels. We also probe the effect of the blood hematocrit on the dynamic performance of the microroller, which shows that shear-induced collisions between erythrocytes (also called red blood cells) and the microroller can significantly alter the motion of the microroller, especially under high hematocrit levels. In addition, we examine the rolling dynamics of the WBC-inspired microroller in a bifurcating microfluidic channel, demonstrating that the microroller can navigate along the user-defined path. These findings provide unique insights into the rolling dynamics of the individual microroller in physiologically relevant blood flow and offer an objective way for facilitating the design of bioinspired microrollers in targeted and localized therapeutic delivery with high precision and efficiency.

Abstract:In this paper, a new high-performance and memory-efficient contact and road model is developed. Specifically, the road is modeled as a rectangular structured grid of deformable springs in the vertical direction, thus enabling fast execution. The new road model stands out due to its ability to handle large road scenarios by allocating computer memory dynamically for each spring, resulting in efficient memory utilization. Furthermore, each spring represents a small road patch that entails various information, such as the soil elevation, the soil properties, and the soil compaction, allowing for complicated simulations incorporating spatially varying soil properties and phenomena related to the multi-pass effect. In addition, using the new contact model, complex terrain geometries are handled in a computationally efficient way by approximating locally the irregular road profile with a suitable equivalent plane. For this, two different strategies are proposed, namely the radial basis function (RBF) interpolation method and the 3D enveloping contact model. Finally, the proposed techniques are implemented in Altair MotionSolve, a comprehensive multi-body simulation software for complex mechanical systems. In particular, a single-wheel test bed is initially examined followed by a four-wheeled rover model and the next-generation NATO reference mobility model (NG-NRMM). In all cases, the proposed model is validated by using available experimental data. Lastly, a case involving both wheeled and tracked vehicles is also examined by using a shared road model.

Abstract:Design, syntheses, and testing of new, fullerene-wheeled single molecular nanomachines, namely, nanocars and nanotrucks, are presented. These nanovehicles are composed of three basic components that include spherical fullerene wheels, freely rotating alkynyl axles, and a molecular chassis. The use of spherical wheels based on C60 and freely rotating axles based on alkynes permits directed nanoscale rolling of the molecular structure on gold surfaces. The rolling motion observed by STM resembles the same motion performed by macroscopic entities in which rolling occurs perpendicular to the axles. A new synthesis methodology, in situ ethynylation of fullerenes, was developed for the realization of the fullerene-wheeled molecular machines. Four generations of the fullerene-wheeled structures were developed, and the latest fourth generation nanocar, 3b, along with three-wheeled triangular compounds, 4a and 4b, provided definitive evidence for fullerene-based wheel-like rolling motion, not stick-slip or sliding translation. The studies here underscore the ability to control directionality of motion in molecular-sized nanostructures through precise molecular design and synthesis.

Abstract:Surface walkers are widely studied as carriers for biomedical applications, such as targeted drug delivery and cell manipulation. For in vivo/in vitro therapeutic applications, high movement velocity is necessary for efficient operation on targets with high throughput. Herein, a fast underwater microstructured spherical surface walker (i.e., microsphere) driven by a rotating magnetic field is reported, and the effect of the surface microstructures on the mobility of microspheres is explored. Compared with the motion of smooth sphere walking nearby a smooth plane, a twofold and a fourfold increases in the velocity are found for the microstructured sphere (MS) walking nearby a smooth plane and a patterned plane, respectively. A hydrodynamic model of MS moving nearby a plane is used to reveal the underlying mechanism of the enhanced motion, which demonstrates that the slippage of fluid on the microstructured surface and the interaction between fluid and microstructures are crucial to the motion enhancement. The result of motion enhancement induced by microstructures can be used for the design of fast biomimetic microrobots, anti‐adhesion, cell manipulation, and targeted drug delivery in complex aqueous environments.

Abstract:Untethered magnet‐driven microrobots play an increasingly important role in various biomedical applications. Incorporating bionic technology into microrobot design is an emerging way to improve the work efficiency of microrobots. Herein, a magnetically powered and frictional anisotropy‐based microwalker that can be potentially used in in vivo nonliquid‐filled environment is proposed. The microwalker is constructed by two rigid segments with an equal length of 70 μm, connected by a rigid joint. Parallel gecko setae‐like tentacles are placed at the bottom of the segments as contact feet to generate friction with the contact surface. The microwalker is integrally fabricated from biocompatible materials with 3D laser lithography based on two‐photon polymerization. The microwalker can be well controlled to move in low‐Reynolds (Re)‐number regimes under an external oscillating magnetic field. In addition to moving in a liquid environment as existing microswimmers, the microwalker can move in surface in a nonliquid‐filled environment. It can also climb the slope driven by the planar magnetic field only. Several experiments were conducted to demonstrate good motion capability of the microwalker. This study provides a new solution to microrobot design for future biomedical applications.
Dynamic Simulation-Guided Design of Tumbling Magnetic Microrobots

Abstract:Design of robots at the small scale is a trial-and-error based process, which is costly and time-consuming. There are few dynamic simulation tools available to accurately predict the motion or performance of untethered microrobots as they move over a substrate. At smaller length scales, the influence of adhesion and friction, which scales with surface area, becomes more pronounced. Thus, rigid body dynamic simulators, which implicitly assume that contact between two bodies can be modeled as point contact are not suitable. In this paper, we present techniques for simulating the motion of microrobots where there can be intermittent and non-point contact between the robot and the substrate. We use these techniques to study the motion of tumbling microrobots of different shapes and select shapes that are optimal for improving locomotion performance. Simulation results are verified using experimental data on linear velocity, maximum climbable incline angle, and microrobot trajectory. Microrobots with improved geometry were fabricated, but limitations in the fabrication process resulted in unexpected manufacturing errors and material/size scale adjustments. The developed simulation model is able to incorporate these limitations and emulate their effect on the microrobot's motion, reproducing the experimental behavior of the tumbling microrobots, further showcasing the effectiveness of having such a dynamic model.

Abstract:Considerable efforts have been devoted to developing artificial micro/nanomotors that can convert energy into movement. A flow lithography integrated microfluidic spinning and spiraling system is developed for the continuous generation of bioinspired helical micromotors. Because the generation processes could be precisely tuned by adjusting the flow rates and the illuminating frequency, the length, diameter, and pitch of the helical micromotors were highly controllable. Benefiting from the fast online gelation and polymerization, the resultant helical micromotors could be imparted with Janus, triplex, and core-shell cross-sectional structures that have never been achieved by other methods. Owing to the spatially controlled encapsulation of functional nanoparticles in the microstructures, the helical micromotors can perform locomotion not only by magnetically actuated rotation or corkscrew motion but also through chemically powered catalytic reaction.

Abstract:Wheeled mobile robots (WMRs) have been proven to be quite competitive and useful in outdoor missions. However, they may face serious sinkage or slippage on deformable terrains, and even get stuck or damaged, thereby causing mission failure. To mitigate these risks, it is essential to closely monitor the robot's states and its interactions with soft terrains. In this letter, we propose an integrated wheel-terrain interaction detecting algorithm which can measure sinkage, wheel-terrain contact angles, and slip ratio simultaneously online. This vision-based algorithm requires only one fisheye camera as its input. It has strong versatility and can be applied to rovers with different suspensions or morphology variations. We use a single-wheel testbed to verify our proposed algorithm through various experiments. The algorithm achieves a frequency of over 30 Hz, while maintaining a high level of accuracy. The relative error of sinkage and contact angle measurement is around 2, and the relative error of slip ratio is less than 0.7. We also propose a semi-empirical model to estimate the wheel sinkage-slip ratio relationship. With its help, we can avoid potential risks to improve the safety and success rate of the robot.

Abstract:Most autonomous navigation systems assume wheeled robots are rigid bodies and their 2D planar workspaces can be divided into free spaces and obstacles. However, recent wheeled mobility research, showing that wheeled platforms have the potential of moving over vertically challenging terrain (e.g., rocky outcroppings, rugged boulders, and fallen tree trunks), invalidate both assumptions. Navigating off-road vehicle chassis with long suspension travel and low tire pressure in places where the boundary between obstacles and free spaces is blurry requires precise 3D modeling of the interaction between the chassis and the terrain, which is complicated by suspension and tire deformation, varying tire-terrain friction, vehicle weight distribution and momentum, etc. In this paper, we present a learning approach to model wheeled mobility, i.e., in terms of vehicle-terrain forward dynamics, and plan feasible, stable, and efficient motion to drive over vertically challenging terrain without rolling over or getting stuck. We present physical experiments on two wheeled robots and show that planning using our learned model can achieve up to 60% improvement in navigation success rate and 46% reduction in unstable chassis roll and pitch angles.
