Abstract:The conversion of light in sound plays a crucial role in spectroscopy, applied physics, and technology. In this paper, light sound conversion in 3D graphene sponge through a photothermoacoustic mechanism is reported. It is shown that the unique combination of mechanical, optical, and thermodynamic properties of graphene assembled in a 3D sponge structure allows an unprecedented high efficiency conversion independent of light wavelength from infrared to ultraviolet. As a first application of this effect, a photothermal based graphene sponge loudspeaker is demonstrated, providing a full digital operation for frequencies from acoustic to ultrasound. The present results suggest a new pathway for light generation and control of sound and ultrasound signals potentially usable in a variety of new technological applications from high fidelity loudspeaker and radiation detectors to medical devices.

Abstract:We demonstrate that the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient can be simultaneously enhanced in graphene hybridized carbon aerogels (GHCAs). To prepare the GHCAs, graphene is introduced into the pyrolyzed resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) aerogel, which significantly improves the electrical conductivity. At the same time, large interfaces between graphene sheets and pyrolyzed RF resin generate an energy filtering effect, which increases the Seebeck coefficient. This strategy promises a power factor which is two orders of magnitude higher than that of pure pyrolyzed RF aerogel. Moreover, the tenuous solid skeleton and highly open-cell foam structure of the GHCAs lead to ultra low thermal conductivity (0.06 W m(-1) K-1) and apparent density (31 kg m(-3)). This may enable the development of a novel category of ultra-lightweight energy-conversion materials with thermal insulation capability.

Abstract:A thermal acoustic (TA) device was fabricated by laser scribing technology. Polyimide (PI) can be converted into patterned porous graphene (PG) by laser’s irradiation in one step. The sound pressure level (SPL) of such TA device is related to laser power. The theoretical model of TA effect was established to analyze the relationship between the SPL and laser power. The theoretical results are in good agreement with experiment results. It was found that PG has a flat frequency response in the range of 5-20 kHz. This novel TA device has the advantages of one-step procedure, high flexibility, no mechanical vibration, low cost and so on. It can open wide applications in speakers, multimedia, medical, earphones, consumer electronics and many other aspects.

Abstract:Thermoacoustic (TA) effect has been discovered for more than 130 years. However, limited by the material characteristics, the performance of a TA sound source could not be compared with magnetoelectric and piezoelectric loudspeakers. Recently, graphene, a two-dimensional material with the lowest heat capacity per unit area, was discovered to have a good TA performance. Compared with a traditional sound source, graphene TA sound sources (GTASSs) have many advantages, such as small volume, no diaphragm vibration, wide frequency range, high transparency, good flexibility, and high sound pressure level (SPL). Therefore, graphene has a great potential as a next-generation sound source. Photoacoustic (PA) imaging can also be applied to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases using the photothermo-acoustic (PTA) effect. Therefore, in this review, we will introduce the history of TA devices. Then, the theory and simulation model of TA will be analyzed in detail. After that, we will talk about the graphene synthesis method. To improve the performance of GTASSs, many strategies such as lowering the thickness and using porous or suspended structures will be introduced. With a good PTA effect and large specific area, graphene PA imaging and drug delivery is a promising prospect in cancer treatment. Finally, the challenges and prospects of GTASSs will be discussed.

Abstract:Abstract An ultralight graphene oxide (GO)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) aerogel (GPA) is proposed as a new class of acoustic materials with tuneable and broadband sound absorption and sound transmission losses. The interaction between GO sheets and PVA molecules is exploited in our environmentally friendly manufacturing process to fabricate aerogels with hierarchical and tuneable porosity embedded in a honeycomb scaffold. The aerogels possess an enhanced ability to dissipate sound energy, with an extremely low density of 2.10 kg m −3 , one of the lowest values ever reported for acoustic materials. We have first experimentally evaluated and optimised the effects of composition and thickness on the acoustic properties, namely sound absorption and sound transmission losses. Subsequently, we have employed a semi-analytical approach to evaluate the effect of different processing times on acoustic properties and assessed the relationships between the acoustic and non-acoustic properties of the materials. Over the 400–2500 Hz range, the reported average sound absorption coefficients are as high as 0.79, while the average sound transmission losses can reach 15.8 dB. We envisage that our subwavelength thin and light aerogel-based materials will possess other functional properties such as fire resistance and EMI shielding, and will prove to be novel acoustic materials for advanced engineering applications.

Abstract:Metal nanomaterials have been widely used to generate photoacoustic (PA) signals because of their high optical absorption characteristics. However, the PA conversion efficiency of metal nanomaterials is limited by the single-wavelength absorption at the resonant peak. To mitigate this issue, a three-layer ultrathin film containing a thin PDMS layer sandwiched between two ultrathin chromium films is proposed. This kind of film structure can attain high optical absorbance (>80%) through the visible light range (450-850 nm). The optical absorption characteristics can be easily modulated by varying the thickness of the PDMS layer. Under the same excitation condition, the PA signal generated by this film structure is twice that of an only Cr film and three times that of an only Au film. This film structure is easily fabricated and can operate with lasers having different central wavelengths or even white light sources, leading to its applications in many fields, including photoacoustic communications and audio transducers. Abstract:Many remarkable properties of graphene are derived from its large energy window for Dirac-like electronic states and have been explored for applications in electronics and photonics. In addition, strong electron-phonon interaction in graphene has led to efficient photo-thermo energy conversions, which has been harnessed for energy applications. By combining the wavelength independent absorption property and the efficient photo-thermo energy conversion, here we report a new type of applications in sound wave generation underlined by a photo-thermo-acoustic energy conversion mechanism. Most significantly, by utilizing ultrafast optical pulses, we demonstrate the ability to control the phase of sound waves generated by the photo-thermal-acoustic process. Our finding paves the way for new types of applications for graphene, such as remote non-contact speakers, optical-switching acoustic devices, etc.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) wave plays important roles in the research of material properties, the non-invasive human security check and the next generation wireless communication. The progress of the scientific and technological applications of THz wave is strongly dependent on the improvement of THz detectors. Here a novel THz wave detection scheme is proposed in which the THz radiation is detected by an audible microphone based on the photo-thermo-acoustic (PTA) effect in graphene foam. Thanks to the room-temperature broadband electromagnetic absorption characteristics of graphene foam and the fast heat transfer between graphene foam and ambient air, this detection method not only inherits the advantages of the photo-thermal THz detector such as room-temperature and full bandwidth, but also has a response time 3 orders of magnitude faster than the photo-thermal detector. Besides, no micro-antenna/electrode is required to fabricate in the graphene foam THz detector which greatly simplifies the detector design and decreases the fabrication cost. It concludes that the room-temperature, full-bandwidth, fast-speed (≥10 kHz), and easy-to-fabricate THz detector developed in this work has superior comprehensive performances among both the commercial THz detectors and the detectors recently developed in laboratory.

Abstract:The performance of a photo-thermo-acoustic (PTA) ultrasonic source can be significantly improved by utilizing graphene-based materials. Graphene is an excellent PTA material owing to its wide electromagnetic absorption spectrum, low heat capacity per unit area, and high thermal conductivity. In this study, a broadband graphene-foam-based PTA ultrasonic source covering the frequency range of 50 kHz to 1.8 MHz was excited by a near-infrared femtosecond laser beam. The lower and upper frequency limits of the acoustic wave that can be detected in the experiments were determined by the responsivity of the microphone and the attenuation of the acoustic wave in air, respectively. The experimental results show that the sound pressure of this ultrasonic source was independent of the laser polarization and incident angle. The peak-to-peak magnitude of the ultrasonic wave was proportional to laser energy when the single-pulse energy of the femtosecond laser varied from 0.4 to 1.0 mJ. Therefore, the sound intensity of the ultrasonic source could be easily controlled by modulating the laser energy. The experimental results also show that the ultrasonic wave emitted from the graphene foam had a dipole-like acoustic pressure distribution, and its principal emission direction was normal to the sample surface, regardless of the laser incidence angle. This characteristic may benefit future applications in directed message transfer/acquisition and nondestructive testing/imaging.

Abstract:Miniaturized sound generators are attractive to realize intriguing functions. Thermoacoustic device's application is seriously limited due to the frequency doubling phenomenon. To address this issue, photoacoustic sound generator is considered as a promising alternative. Here, based on vertical single-wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) array, we introduce a photoacoustic sound generator with internal nano Helmholtz cavity. Different from traditional device that generates sound by periodically heating up the open space air around material, this sound generator produces audio signal by forming a forced vibration of the air inside the CNTs. Interestingly, anomalous photoacoustic behavior is observed that the sound pressure level (SPL) curve has a resonance peak, the corresponding frequency of which is inversely proportional to the CNTs array's height. Furthermore, the energy conversion efficiency of this photoacoustic device is 1.64 times as large as that of graphene sponge based photoacoustic device. Most importantly, this device can be employed for music playing, bringing a new clew for the development of musical instruments in the future.

Abstract:We demonstrate an interesting phenomenon that graphene can emit sound. The application of graphene can be expanded in the acoustic field. Graphene-on-paper sound source devices are made by patterning graphene on paper substrates. Three graphene sheet samples with the thickness of 100, 60, and 20 nm were fabricated. Sound emission from graphene is measured as a function of power, distance, angle, and frequency in the far-field. The theoretical model of air/graphene/paper/PCB board multilayer structure is established to analyze the sound directivity, frequency response, and efficiency. Measured sound pressure level (SPL) and efficiency are in good agreement with theoretical results. It is found that graphene has a significant flat frequency response in the wide ultrasound range 20-50 kHz. In addition, the thinner graphene sheets can produce higher SPL due to its lower heat capacity per unit area (HCPUA). The infrared thermal images reveal that a thermoacoustic effect is the working principle. We find that the sound performance mainly depends on the HCPUA of the conductor and the thermal properties of the substrate. The paper-based graphene sound source devices have highly reliable, flexible, no mechanical vibration, simple structure and high performance characteristics. It could open wide applications in multimedia, consumer electronics, biological, medical, and many other areas.

Abstract:•In order to obtain a more sensitive acoustic device, a capacitive acoustic sensor based on suspended graphene was prepared. By changing the thickness of the silicon dioxide layer to control the gap between the film and the substrate, and through PMMA composite layer supports the graphene film to prevent short circuit of the device caused by a thin film contacting the lower electrode.•The vertical graphene prepared by the microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition method has a small contact area with the substrate, with a jungle shaped cross section and many pores, resulting in less heat leakage and more heat to be emitted into the air. Based on the characteristics of vertical graphene, a better thermoacoustic source was prepared.•Based on the porous structure of laser-induced graphene is not only more sensitive to weak vibration, but also can emit more heat into the air. Based on the characteristics of laser-induced graphene, an artificial intelligent throat is prepared.

Abstract:Due to the extremely high thermal conductivity and low heat capacity per unit area of graphene, it is possible to fabricate an efficient sound-emitting device based on the thermoacoustic effect with no mechanical vibration. In this paper, the fundamental performance of this new graphene sound-emitting device (G-SED) is investigated in terms of its static behavior. The sound amplitude mapping shows that the G-SED has good sound performance under 0.01 W. The sound frequency spectra measured at different distances and angles show that the G-SED has good sound directivity. It is possible to realize sound wave manipulation by using an array of G-SEDs. The relationship between the temperature of graphene and the sound frequency was investigated by a thermal imaging instrument. The fast transient sound response in real time was recorded by applying 60 mu s short time multi-pulses and single-pulse. The stable sound emission at a constant sound pressure amplitude with low noise was observed for continuous operation under a fixed frequency over several hours. Such significant performances in this G-SED indicate broad applications, and shed light on the use of graphene in the field of acoustics.

Abstract:Abstract Noise pollution, which is no less harmful than air, water and soil pollution, is becoming an environmental shortcoming that cannot be ignored. Scientists are also seeking various solutions to work on reducing noise pollution. In this work, porous graphene aerogel (FD-GA) and porous graphene oxide aerogel (FD-GOA) prepared by foaming combined with freeze-drying are reported as acoustic-absorbing materials. The effects of thickness and degree of compression on the acoustic-absorbing performance of FD-GA and FD-GOA in the 1000-6000 Hz range, where human ear hearing is sensitive, were investigated, respectively. FD-GA was found to have significantly higher acoustic absorption performance with a peak absorption of 96.7%. Abstract:Porous acoustic-absorbing materials currently used to solve noise pollution mainly include polyurethane composite materials and porous fibers which are dedicated to achieving good noise reduction effects in a wide frequency range. Nevertheless, traditional porous acoustic-absorbing materials face irreparable defects as required by the multifunction and high energy efficiency. The reason is nothing more than the internal microstructure of conventional acoustic-absorbing materials is difficult to be precisely controlled by macroscopic operations, resulting in poor mass transfer capability and low energy conversion efficiency. In this work, by customized design of controlled mechanical foaming and atmospheric drying technique, a custom-built graphene aerogel (cGA) as acoustic-absorbing material with an acoustic absorption coefficient approaching 100% is prepared, which can efficiently absorb noise at an assigned frequency (2000–6000 Hz range) according to individual needs. Through simple stacking, cGAs expand from single-frequency absorption to multi-frequency high-efficiency absorption. What is more significant is that a single aerogel has electrical signal responses of different intensities to sounds of different frequencies, which allows to build the aerogel into an acoustic detector to convert noise signals into electrical signals and realize the goal of sound fingerprint detection.

Abstract:Existing thermoacoustic devices are based on a complicated fabrication process, which extremely limits their practical applications. In this paper, we realize a flexible graphene sound device based on laser reduced graphene. The graphene oxide is converted into graphene by a 450 nm laser with a one-step process. The performance of the graphene sound device is affected by the laser power, the scanning speed, and the substrate thickness. The experimental results match well with the theoretical results. Besides, the sound device has the advantages of excellent flexibility, broad frequency spectrum (0-40 kHz), fast fabrication process, and low cost, which will become a promising alternative in the flexible electronic systems in the future. Hybrid aeromaterials for enhanced and rapid volumetric photothermal response

Abstract:Conversion of light into heat is essential for a broad range of technologies such as solar thermal heating, catalysis and desalination. Three-dimensional (3D) carbon nanomaterial-based aerogels have shown to hold great promise as photothermal transducer materials. However, till now, their light-to-heat conversion is limited by surface-near absorption, resulting in a strong heat localization only at the illuminated surface region, while most of the aerogel volume remains unused. We present an innovative fabrication concept for highly porous (>99.9%) photothermal hybrid aeromaterials, that enable an ultra-rapid and volumetric photothermal response with an enhancement by a factor of around 2.5 compared to the pristine variant. The hybrid aeromaterial is based on strongly light-scattering framework structures composed of interconnected hollow silicon dioxide (SiO${_2}$) microtubes, which are functionalized with extremely low amounts (in order of a few ${\mu}$g cm${^-}$${^3}$) of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets, acting as photothermal agents. Tailoring the density of rGO within the framework structure enables us to control both, light scattering and light absorption, and thus the volumetric photothermal response. We further show that by rapid and repeatable gas activation these transducer materials expand the field of photothermal applications, like untethered light-powered and -controlled microfluidic pumps and soft pneumatic actuators.

Abstract:Graphene woven fabrics (GWFs) consisting of a large number of overlapping graphene micro-ribbons were fabricated by chemical vapor deposition. We demonstrated that GWF films can emit sound efficiently once they are actuated by a sound-frequency electric field owing to the thermoacoustic effect. Because of its ultra-low heat capacity per unit area, the GWF shows sound generation performance comparable to single-layer graphene and carbon nanotubes, and would perform better than them when it is suspended on a high porosity substrate. This sound source can be used in a wide variety of applications, taking advantage of its transparency, flexibility, ultrathin nature, absence of moving parts, and biologically compatible characteristics.

Abstract:The photoacoustic effect in liquids, generated by metal nanoparticles excited with short laser pulses, offers high contrast imaging and promising medical treatment techniques. Understanding the role of the thermal boundary resistance (TBR) and the laser pulse duration in the generation mechanism of acoustic waves is essential to implement efficient photoacoustic nanotransducers. This work theoretically investigates, for the paradigmatic case of water-immersed gold nanocylinders, the role of the TBR and of laser pulse duration in the competition between the launching mechanisms: the thermophone and the mechanophone. In the thermophone, the nanoparticle acts as a nanoheater and the wave is launched by water thermal expansion. In the mechanophone, the nanoparticle directly acts as a nanopiston. Specifically, for a gold-water interface, the thermophone prevails under ns light pulse irradiation, while the mechanophone dominates shortening the pulse to the 10 ps regime. For a graphene-functionalized gold-water interface, instead, the mechanophone dominates over the entire range of explored laser pulse durations. Results point to high-TBR, liquid-immersed nanoparticles as potentially efficient photoacoustic nanogenerators, with the advantage of keeping the liquid environment temperature unaltered.
