Abstract:Recovering the ability to stand and walk independently can have numerous health benefits for people with spinal cord injury (SCI). Wearable exoskeletons are being considered as a promising alternative to conventional knee-ankle-foot orthoses (KAFOs) for gait training and assisting functional mobility. However, comparisons between these two types of devices in terms of gait biomechanics and energetics have been limited. Through a randomized, crossover clinical trial, this study compared the use of a knee-powered lower limb exoskeleton (the ABLE Exoskeleton) against passive orthoses, which are the current standard of care for verticalization and gait ambulation outside the clinical setting in people with SCI. Ten patients with SCI completed a 10-session gait training program with each device followed by user satisfaction questionnaires. Walking with the ABLE Exoskeleton improved gait kinematics compared to the KAFOs, providing a more physiological gait pattern with less compensatory movements (38% reduction of circumduction, 25% increase of step length, 29% improvement in weight shifting). However, participants did not exhibit significantly better results in walking performance for the standard clinical tests (Timed Up and Go, 10-m Walk Test, and 6-min Walk Test), nor significant reductions in energy consumption. These results suggest that providing powered assistance only on the knee joints is not enough to significantly reduce the energy consumption required by people with SCI to walk compared to passive orthoses. Active assistance on the hip or ankle joints seems necessary to achieve this outcome.

Abstract:Ankle-based exoskeletons have demonstrated metabolic benefits during steady-state walking; however, variability exists in individual adaptation timelines necessary to achieve those benefits. This study assessed timelines for metabolic and gait-related adaptation while wearing an ankle-based exoskeleton while powered (EXOP) compared to unpowered (EXNP) and no device worn (NOEX). Metabolic (VO 2 ) and biomechanics data were collected while 14 participants walked on a treadmill at 1.3 m/s for six sessions. To better understand variability in responses to wearing exoskeletons, the cohort was divided based on the slope of the VO 2 response of the first two sessions in the EXOP condition, and gait parameters were compared between subgroups. Repeated measures analyses of variance revealed a significant ( p ≤ 0.001) 10% VO 2 reduction for EXOP compared to EXNP and a non-significant 2.5% reduction for EXOP v NOEX. Lack of significant session-based comparisons indicated no additional VO 2 adaptation; however, significant session-related results for peak knee flexion (interaction, p = 0.042) and step width (session main effect, p = 0.003) suggest gait-related adaptation continued during the sessions. Subgroup results indicated different response profiles to wearing exoskeletons; and implications of classifying initial responses based on metabolic response are discussed as an approach to understand what drives variation in responses to these devices. After initial training, VO 2 reductions were observed with an ankle-based exoskeleton during the initial session and those reductions were maintained for the remaining sessions. Some gait-related variables continued to change over the remaining sessions. Exploratory work based on differences between early metabolic responses revealed potential adaptation strategy subgroups.

Abstract:Historically, persons with paralysis have limited options for overground ambulation. Recently, powered exoskeletons have become available, which are systems that translate the user's body movements to activate motors to move the lower limbs through a predetermined gait pattern. As part of an ongoing clinical study (NCT01454570), eight nonambulatory persons with paraplegia were trained to ambulate with a powered exoskeleton. Measurements of oxygen uptake (VO2) and heart rate (HR) were recorded for 6 min each during each maneuver while sitting, standing, and walking. The average value of VO2 during walking (11.2 +/- 1.7 mL/kg/min) was significantly higher than those for sitting and standing (3.5 +/- 0.4 and 4.3 +/- 0.9 mL/kg/min, respectively; p < 0.001). The HR response during walking was significantly greater than that of either sitting or standing (118 +/- 21vs 70 +/- 10 and 81 +/- 12 beats per minute, respectively: p < 0.001). Abstract:Metabolic diseases disproportionately affect people with spinal cord injury (SCI). Increasing energy expenditure and remodeling body composition may offset deleterious consequences of SCI to improve cardiometabolic health. Evidence is emerging that robotic exoskeleton use increases physical activity in SCI, but little is known about its effects on energy expenditure and body composition. This study therefore aimed to evaluate the impact of robotic exoskeleton training on body composition and energy expenditure in adults with SCI. A systematic literature review was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines. Five databases were searched to retrieve studies meeting pre-set eligibility criteria: adults with SCI, interventions evaluating the effects of robotic exoskeleton devices on body composition or energy expenditure. The PEDro scale guided quality assessments with findings described narratively. Of 2163 records, 10 studies were included. Robotic exoskeleton training does not significantly improve energy expenditure compared to other exercise interventions. Significant changes ( P < 0.05) in body composition, particularly reduced fat mass, however, were reported. High variability seen with the interventions was coupled with poor quality of the studies. While robotic exoskeleton interventions may propose modest cardiometabolic benefits in adults with SCI, further robust trials in larger samples are needed to strengthen these findings.

Abstract:Background: Advanced technologies are increasingly used to address impaired mobility after neurological insults, with growing evidence of their benefits for various populations. However, certain robotic devices have not been extensively investigated in specific conditions, limiting knowledge about optimal application for healthcare. Objective: To compare effectiveness of conventional gait training with exoskeleton-assisted walking for non-traumatic brain injury during early stage rehabilitation. Methods: Clinical evaluation data at admission and discharge were obtained in a retrospective case-control design. Patients received standard of care physical therapy either using Ekso GT or not. Within- or between-group statistical tests were performed to determine change over time and interventional differences. Results: This study analyzed forty-nine individuals (33% female), 20 controls and 29 Ekso participants who were equivalent at baseline. Both groups improved in Functional Independence Measure scores and ambulation ability (p < .00001 and p < .001, respectively). Control subjects demonstrated significantly different distance walked and assistance level values at discharge from those who were treated with the exoskeleton (p < .01). Conclusion: Robotic locomotion is non-inferior for subacute functional recovery after non-traumatic brain injury. Conventional therapy produced larger gait performance gains during hospitalization. Further research is needed to understand specific factors influencing efficacy and the long-term implications after rehabilitation.
The Effectiveness and Safety of Exoskeletons as Assistive and Rehabilitation Devices in the Treatment of Neurologic Gait Disorders in Patients with Spinal Cord Injury: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Study Design Systematic review. Clinical Questions (1) When used as an assistive device, do wearable exoskeletons improve lower extremity function or gait compared with knee-ankle-foot orthoses (KAFOs) in patients with complete or incomplete spinal cord injury? (2) When used as a rehabilitation device, do wearable exoskeletons improve lower extremity function or gait compared with other rehabilitation strategies in patients with complete or incomplete spinal cord injury? (3) When used as an assistive or rehabilitation device, are wearable exoskeletons safe compared with KAFO for assistance or other rehabilitation strategies for rehabilitation in patients with complete or incomplete spinal cord injury? Methods PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases and reference lists of key articles were searched from database inception to May 2, 2016, to identify studies evaluating the effectiveness of wearable exoskeletons used as assistive or rehabilitative devices in patients with incomplete or complete spinal cord injury. Results No comparison studies were found evaluating exoskeletons as an assistive device. Nine comparison studies (11 publications) evaluated the use of exoskeletons as a rehabilitative device. The 10-meter walk test velocity and Spinal Cord Independence Measure scores showed no difference in change from baseline among patients undergoing exoskeleton training compared with various comparator therapies. The remaining primary outcome measures of 6-minute walk test distance and Walking Index for Spinal Cord Injury I and II and Functional Independence Measure-Locomotor scores showed mixed results, with some studies indicating no difference in change from baseline between exoskeleton training and comparator therapies, some indicating benefit of exoskeleton over comparator therapies, and some indicating benefit of comparator therapies over exoskeleton. Conclusion There is no data to compare locomotion assistance with exoskeleton versus conventional KAFOs. There is no consistent benefit from rehabilitation using an exoskeleton versus a variety of conventional methods in patients with chronic spinal cord injury. Trials comparing later-generation exoskeletons are needed.
Gait training after spinal cord injury: safety, feasibility and gait function following 8 weeks of training with the exoskeletons from Ekso Bionics

Abstract:Study design: Prospective quasi-experimental study, pre- and post-design. Objectives: Assess safety, feasibility, training characteristics and changes in gait function for persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) using the robotic exoskeletons from Ekso Bionics. Setting: Nine European rehabilitation centres. Methods: Robotic exoskeleton gait training, three times weekly over 8 weeks. Time upright, time walking and steps in the device (training characteristics) were recorded longitudinally. Gait and neurological function were measured by 10 Metre Walk Test (10 MWT), Timed Up and Go (TUG), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Walking Index for Spinal Cord Injury (WISCI) II and Lower Extremity Motor Score (LEMS). Results: Fifty-two participants completed the training protocol. Median age: 35.8 years (IQR 27.5-52.5), men/women: N = 36/16, neurological level of injury: C1-L2 and severity: AIS A-D (American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale). Time since injury (TSI) < 1 year, N = 25; > 1 year, N = 27. No serious adverse events occurred. Three participants dropped out following ankle swelling (overuse injury). Four participants sustained a Category II pressure ulcer at contact points with the device but completed the study and skin normalized. Training characteristics increased significantly for all subgroups. The number of participants with TSI < 1 year and gait function increased from 20 to 56% (P = 0.004) and 10MWT, TUG, BBS and LEMS results improved (P < 0.05). The number of participants with TSI > 1 year and gait function, increased from 41 to 44% and TUG and BBS results improved (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Exoskeleton training was generally safe and feasible in a heterogeneous sample of persons with SCI. Results indicate potential benefits on gait function and balance.
Kinematic, muscular, and metabolic responses during exoskeletal-, elliptical-, or therapist-assisted stepping in people with incomplete spinal cord injury

Abstract:Background: Robotic-assisted locomotor training has demonstrated some efficacy in individuals with neurological injury and is slowly gaining clinical acceptance. Both exoskeletal devices, which control individual joint movements, and elliptical devices, which control endpoint trajectories, have been utilized with specific patient populations and are available commercially. No studies have directly compared training efficacy or patient performance during stepping between devices. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate kinematic, electromyographic (EMG), and metabolic responses during elliptical- and exoskeletal-assisted stepping in individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI) compared with therapist-assisted stepping. Design A prospective, cross-sectional, repeated-measures design was used. Methods: Participants with incomplete SCI (n=11) performed 3 separate bouts of exoskeletal-, elliptical-, or therapist-assisted stepping. Unilateral hip and knee sagittal-plane kinematics, lower-limb EMG recordings, and oxygen consumption were compared across stepping conditions and with control participants (n=10) during treadmill stepping. Results: Exoskeletal stepping kinematics closely approximated normal gait patterns, whereas significantly greater hip and knee flexion postures were observed during elliptical-assisted stepping. Measures of kinematic variability indicated consistent patterns in control participants and during exoskeletal-assisted stepping, whereas therapist- and elliptical-assisted stepping kinematics were more variable. Despite specific differences, EMG patterns generally were similar across stepping conditions in the participants with SCI. In contrast, oxygen consumption was consistently greater during therapist-assisted stepping. Limitations Limitations included a small sample size, lack of ability to evaluate kinetics during stepping, unilateral EMG recordings, and sagittal-plane kinematics. Conclusions: Despite specific differences in kinematics and EMG activity, metabolic activity was similar during stepping in each robotic device. Understanding potential differences and similarities in stepping performance with robotic assistance may be important in delivery of repeated locomotor training using robotic or therapist assistance and for consumers of robotic devices.

Abstract:Exercise intensity of exoskeleton-assisted walking in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) has been reported as moderate. However, the cardiorespiratory responses to long-term exoskeleton-assisted walking have not been sufficiently investigated. We investigated the cardiorespiratory responses to 10 weeks of exoskeleton-assisted walking training in patients with SCI. Chronic nonambulatory patients with SCI were recruited from an outpatient clinic. Walking training with an exoskeleton was conducted three times per week for 10 weeks. Oxygen consumption and heart rate (HR) were measured during a 6-min walking test at pre-, mid-, and post-training. Exercise intensity was determined according to the metabolic equivalent of tasks (METs) for SCI and HR relative to the HR reserve (%HRR). Walking efficiency was calculated as oxygen consumption divided by walking speed. The exercise intensity according to the METs (both peak and average) corresponded to moderate physical activity and did not change after training. The %HRR demonstrated a moderate (peak %HRR) and light (average %HRR) exercise intensity level, and the average %HRR significantly decreased at post-training compared with mid-training (31.6 ± 8.9% to 24.3 ± 7.3%, p = 0.013). Walking efficiency progressively improved after training. Walking with an exoskeleton for 10 weeks may affect the cardiorespiratory system in chronic patients with SCI.

Preliminary Evaluation Of Gait Assistance During Treadmill Walking With A Light-Weight Bionic Knee Exoskeleton

Abstract:In this paper, we present the preliminary evaluation of gait assistance during treadmill walking with a powered bionic knee exoskeleton (BioKEX) which is intended for gait rehabilitation of patients with knee joint movement disorder. The BioKEX is a unilateral and light-weight wearable exoskeleton. The anthropomorphic joint design is that the tibia rolls on the femur during knee flexion/extention implemented by gear meshing mechanisms. We applied a finite-state machine based impedance control approach for exoskeleton control. The desired joint torque for the locomotion mode is controlled by finite-state machines, which modulate the joint impedance according to the phase of gait. In the experiments, we firstly verified the effect of assistance performance through the torque given by the exoskeleton during the gait cycle. Then, we performed energetics experiments and found human wearing BioKEX under assistance mode had a lower metabolic cost than wearing same weight load (an average reduction is approximately 6.21 % (p < 0.05). It implies that the assistance torque provide by the knee exoskeleton can compensate the energy consumption caused by exoskeleton intrinsic weight generating load for proximal joint. Therefore, the BioKEX system provides knee joint assistance for gait requirement, but not increases metabolic cost in spite of an extra weight (exoskeleton weight) on human.
Impact of an implanted neuroprosthesis on community ambulation in incomplete SCI

Abstract:Objective: Test the effect of a multi-joint control with implanted electrical stimulation on walking after spinal cord injury (SCI). Design: Single subject research design with repeated measures. Setting: Hospital-based biomechanics laboratory and user assessment of community use. Participants: Female with C6 AIS C SCI 30 years post injury. Interventions: Lower extremity muscle activation with an implanted pulse generator and gait training. Outcome measures: Walking speed, maximum distance, oxygen consumption, upper extremity (UE) forces, kinematics and self-assessment of technology. Results: Short distance walking speed at one-year follow up with or without stimulation was not significantly different from baseline. However, average walking speed was significantly faster (0.22 m/s) with stimulation over longer distances than volitional walking (0.12 m/s). In addition, there was a 413% increase in walking distance from 95 m volitionally to 488 m with stimulation while oxygen consumption and maximum upper extremity forces decreased by 22 and 16%, respectively. Stimulation also produced significant (P ≤ 0.001) improvements in peak hip and knee flexion, ankle angle at foot off and at mid-swing. Conclusion: An implanted neuroprosthesis enabled a subject with incomplete SCI to walk longer distances with improved hip and knee flexion and ankle dorsiflexion resulting in decreased oxygen consumption and UE support. Further research is required to determine the robustness, generalizability and functional implications of implanted neuroprostheses for community ambulation after incomplete SCI.
EMG median frequency shifts without change in muscle oxygenation following novel locomotor training in individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury

Abstract:Objectives: To examine the effect of muscle fiber recruitment patterns on muscle oxygen utilization during treadmill walking in a group of individuals who have incomplete spinal cord injury.Methods: 5 participants with motor incomplete spinal cord injury (Age; 42.2 ± 18.8 years, Male; n = 4) completed an over ground locomotor training program. Muscle utilization/oxygenation and activation of the medial gastrocnemius were measured by near infrared spectroscopy and surface electromyography pre- and post-over ground locomotor training during two separate treadmill walking bouts at self-selected speeds. Outcomes were changes in deoxygenation hemoglobin/myoglobin concentrations, and the change in median power of the power spectrum of the electromyography after training.Results: A significant increase in median power of the power spectrum of the electromyography signal was observed during both bouts of treadmill walking, 6-minute walking bout and longer fatiguing bout (49% p = 0.047 and 48% p = 0.035, respectively) post-over ground locomotor training. There was no significant change in muscle utilization/oxygenation post-over ground locomotor training. There was no significant effect of median power of the power spectrum on deoxygenation hemoglobin/myoglobin during either of the walking bouts.Conclusions: The main finding of the current study was that median power of the power spectrum significantly increased following 12 weeks of over ground locomotor training, with no significant change in deoxygenation hemoglobin/myoglobin. The recruitment of more and/or larger motor units was seen in conjunction with no changes in muscle oxygen utilization for the same walking task.The reduction of skeletal muscle innervation in Spinal Cord Injury may adversely affect the orderly recruitment of motor units, which could in turn blunt the oxidative metabolic response during physical activity.Over-ground locomotor could be a useful tool in the rehabilitative process following an incomplete spinal cord injury.

Abstract:Background: In wheelchair users with a chronic spinal cord injury (WUSCI), prolonged nonactive sitting time and reduced physical activity-typically linked to this mode of mobility-contribute to the development or exacerbation of cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal, and endocrine-metabolic health complications that are often linked to increased risks of chronic pain or psychological morbidity. Limited evidence suggests that engaging in a walking program with a wearable robotic exoskeleton may be a promising physical activity intervention to counter these detrimental health effects. Objective: This study's overall goals are as follows: (1) to determine the effects of a 16-week wearable robotic exoskeleton-assisted walking program on organic systems, functional capacities, and multifaceted psychosocial factors and (2) to determine self-reported satisfaction and perspectives with regard to the intervention and the device. Methods: A total of 20 WUSCI, who have had their injuries for more than 18 months, will complete an overground wearable robotic exoskeleton-assisted walking program (34 sessions; 60 min/session) supervised by a physiotherapist over a 16-week period (one to three sessions/week). Data will be collected 1 month prior to the program, at the beginning, and at the end as well as 2 months after completing the program. Assessments will characterize sociodemographic characteristics; anthropometric parameters; sensorimotor impairments; pain; lower extremity range of motion and spasticity; wheelchair abilities; cardiorespiratory fitness; upper extremity strength; bone architecture and mineral density at the femur, tibia, and radius; total and regional body composition; health-related quality of life; and psychological health. Interviews and an online questionnaire will be conducted to measure users' satisfaction levels and perspectives at the end of the program. Differences across measurement times will be verified using appropriate parametric or nonparametric analyses of variance for repeated measures. Results: This study is currently underway with active recruitment in Montréal, Québec, Canada. Results are expected in the spring of 2021. Conclusions: The results from this study will be essential to guide the development, implementation, and evaluation of future evidence-based wearable robotic exoskeleton-assisted walking programs offered in the community, and to initiate a reflection regarding the use of wearable robotic exoskeletons during initial rehabilitation following a spinal cord injury. Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the safety, walking efficiency, physiological cost, don and doff time cost, and user satisfaction of Ai-robot. Design: Prospective, multi-center, and cross-over trial. Subjects: Paraplegic subjects ( n = 40) with T6–L2 level spinal cord injury. Methods: Subjects who could walk independently using Aiwalker, Ailegs, and hip knee ankle foot orthosis (HKAFO) for 6 min within 30 days of training underwent 10 sets of tests. In each set, they completed three 6-min walk test (6MWT) sessions using the three aids in random order. Results: Skin lesions, pressure sores, and fractures, were the main adverse events, likely due to a lack of experience in using exoskeleton systems. The average 6MWT distances of the Aiwalker, Ailegs, and HKAFO groups were 134.20 ± 18.74, 79.71 ± 18.06, and 48.31 ± 19.87 m, respectively. The average heart rate increases in the Aiwalker (4.21 ± 8.20%) and Ailegs (41.81 ± 23.47%) groups were both significantly lower than that in the HKAFO group (62.33 ± 28.32%) (both p < 0.001). The average donning/doffing time costs for Ailegs and Aiwalker were significantly shorter than that of HKAFO (both p < 0.001). Satisfaction was higher in the Ailegs and Aiwalker groups (both p < 0.001). Conclusion: Subjects with paraplegia below T6 level were able to ambulate safely and efficiently with Ai-robot. The use of Ai-robot should be learned under the guidance of experienced medical personnel.

Abstract:Background. While upper body training has been effective for improving aerobic fitness and muscle strength after spinal cord injury (SCI), activity-based therapies intended to activate the paralyzed extremities have been reported to promote neurological improvement. Objective. To compare the effectiveness of intensive whole-body exercise compared with upper body exercise for people with chronic SCI. Methods. A parallel-group randomized controlled trial was conducted. Participants with a range of SCI levels and severity were randomized to either full-body exercise (FBE) or upper body exercise (UBE) groups (3 sessions per week over 12 weeks). FBE participants underwent locomotor training, functional electrical stimulation-assisted leg cycling, and trunk and lower extremity exercises, while UBE participants undertook upper body strength and aerobic fitness training only. The primary outcome measure was the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) motor score for upper and lower extremities. Adverse events were systematically recorded. Results. A total of 116 participants were enrolled and included in the primary analysis. The adjusted mean between-group difference was -0.04 (95% CI -1.12 to 1.04) for upper extremity motor scores, and 0.90 (95% CI -0.48 to 2.27) for lower extremity motor scores. There were 15 serious adverse events in UBE and 16 in FBE, but only one of these was definitely related to the experimental intervention (bilateral femoral condyle and tibial plateau subchondral fractures). No significant between-group difference was found for adverse events, or functional or behavioral variables. Conclusions. Full-body training did not lead to improved ASIA motor scores compared with upper body training in people with chronic SCI.

Abstract:Abstract Background Individuals requiring greater physical assistance to practice walking complete fewer steps in physical therapy during subacute stroke rehabilitation. Powered exoskeletons have been developed to allow repetitious overground gait training for individuals with lower limb weakness. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of exoskeleton-based physical therapy training during subacute rehabilitation for walking recovery in non-ambulatory patients with stroke. Methods An assessor-blinded randomized controlled trial was conducted at 3 inpatient rehabilitation hospitals. Patients with subacute stroke (< 3 months) who were unable to walk without substantial assistance (Functional Ambulation Category rating of 0 or 1) were randomly assigned to receive exoskeleton-based or standard physical therapy during rehabilitation, until discharge or a maximum of 8 weeks. The experimental protocol replaced 75% of standard physical therapy sessions with individualized exoskeleton-based sessions to increase standing and stepping repetition, with the possibility of weaning off the device. The primary outcome was walking ability, measured using the Functional Ambulation Category. Secondary outcomes were gait speed, distance walked on the 6-Minute Walk Test, days to achieve unassisted gait, lower extremity motor function (Fugl-Meyer Assessment), Berg Balance Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire, Montreal Cognitive Assessment, and 36-Item Short Form Survey, measured post-intervention and after 6 months. Results Thirty-six patients with stroke (mean 39 days post-stroke) were randomized (Exoskeleton = 19, Usual Care = 17). On intention-to-treat analysis, no significant between-group differences were found in the primary or secondary outcomes at post-intervention or after 6 months. Five participants randomized to the Exoskeleton group did not receive the protocol as planned and thus exploratory as-treated and per-protocol analyses were undertaken. The as-treated analysis found that those adhering to exoskeleton-based physical therapy regained independent walking earlier (p = 0.03) and had greater gait speed (p = 0.04) and 6MWT (p = 0.03) at 6 months; however, these differences were not significant in the per-protocol analysis. No serious adverse events were reported. Conclusions This study found that exoskeleton-based physical therapy does not result in greater improvements in walking independence than standard care but can be safely administered at no detriment to patient outcomes. Abstract:BACKGROUND Loss of legged mobility due to spinal cord injury (SCI) is associated with multiple physiological and psychological impacts. Powered exoskeletons offer the possibility of regained mobility and reversal or prevention of the secondary effects associated with immobility. OBJECTIVE This study was conducted to evaluate mobility outcomes for individuals with SCI after 5 gait-training sessions with a powered exoskeleton, with a primary goal of characterizing the ease of learning and usability of the system. METHODS Sixteen subjects with SCI were enrolled in a pilot clinical trial at Shepherd Center, Atlanta, Georgia, with injury levels ranging from C5 complete to L1 incomplete. An investigational Indego exoskeleton research kit was evaluated for ease of use and efficacy in providing legged mobility. Outcome measures of the study included the 10-meter walk test (10 MWT) and the 6-minute walk test (6 MWT) as well as measures of independence including donning and doffing times and the ability to walk on various surfaces. RESULTS At the end of 5 sessions (1.5 hours per session), average walking speed was 0.22 m/s for persons with C5-6 motor complete tetraplegia, 0.26 m/s for T1-8 motor complete paraplegia, and 0.45 m/s for T9-L1 paraplegia. Distances covered in 6 minutes averaged 64 meters for those with C5-6, 74 meters for T1-8, and 121 meters for T9-L1. Additionally, all participants were able to walk on both indoor and outdoor surfaces. CONCLUSIONS Results after only 5 sessions suggest that persons with tetraplegia and paraplegia learn to use the Indego exoskeleton quickly and can manage a variety of surfaces. Walking speeds and distances achieved also indicate that some individuals with paraplegia can quickly become limited community ambulators using this system.
