Abstract:An evaluation of the pollution, distribution, and mobility of arsenic and heavy metals in spoil heaps and soils surrounding the abandoned Carmina lead–zinc mine (Asturias, northern Spain) was carried out. Fractionation of arsenic was performed by an arsenic-specific sequential extraction method; while, heavy metal fractionations was carried out using the protocol of the Bureau Community of Reference (BCR) (now renamed Standards, Measurements and Testing Programme). Arsenic appeared predominantly associated with amorphous iron oxyhydroxides. Among the heavy metals, lead and zinc showed high availability since significant amounts were extracted in the nonresidual fractions; whereas, chromium, copper and nickel showed very low availability, indicating their lithogenic origins. The results showed that the extractability of heavy metals in soils is influenced mainly by the presence of iron and manganese oxides as well as by pH and Eh. Multiple pollution indices, including the enrichment factor (EF), geoaccumulation index (Igeo), ecological risk index (Er) and potential ecological risk index (PERI), were used to assess the degree of soil pollution in the mine area. All results showed that lead was the key factor causing the pollution and ecological risk in the studied area, and copper, zinc and arsenic also had significant contributions. Notably, the sites at higher risk coincided with those with high availability of arsenic and heavy metals. This study provides an integrative approach that serves as a powerful tool to evaluate the metal pollution status and potential threats to the local environment of abandoned mining areas, and the results are useful for making management decisions in these areas.

Abstract:In the watersheds of abandoned mining districts, it is common to find remains of former facilities and waste dams on stream banks and slopes—a situation that results in the transport and accumulation of metal(loid)s in alluvial deposits. To analyze this problem, an area of the former mining district of Linares–La Carolina (southern Spain) was selected to evaluate the contents and distributions of Ag, As, Ba, Cu, and Pb as potentially toxic elements (PTEs) found in the mineral paragenesis. Specifically, this study focused on the Siles Stream, which runs through a sector where underground mining for the exploitation of galena veins generated abundant mining wastes, mainly waste rock and tailings. Thirty-four sediment samples from the stream bed of the Siles Stream and two sediment samples from the Guadiel River, of which it is a tributary, were analyzed. Floodplain sediments were sampled in the stream banks at the middle and lower reaches (11 samples), as well as the riverine soils developed at the mouth of the Siles Stream (22 samples). The analyzed samples presented high levels of PTEs, in most cases with values much higher than the generic reference levels established by European and regional legislation for PTEs in soils. In the case of Pb, the main metal mined in this district, contents of up to 27,074 mg·kg−1 were observed in the stream bed sediments. Very high concentrations of Pb also appeared in the floodplain sediments, with maximum values in the middle course of the stream, where the concentration reached 43,692 mg·kg−1. With respect to the sediments of the Guadiel river bed, the Pb content was 699 mg·kg−1 before the confluence with the stream and 2537 mg·kg−1 downstream, which clearly reflects the influence of the contributions from the Siles Stream. The enrichment factors (EFs) show that the sediments present a severe to very severe anthropogenic influence for Ag, As, Ba, Cu, and Pb. The geoaccumulation index (Igeo) indicates that the entire basin is extremely polluted by Pb, to which As and Ag are added in the middle course of the stream. The potential ecological risk index (RI) and pollution load index (PLI) based on the contamination factor (CF) suggested that metal loads far exceeded the reference values. Selective chemical extraction methods were used to assess the potential bioavailability of these elements in sediment and soil samples. The results showed high concentrations of Pb in the exchangeable fraction, which poses a significant ecological risk and potential human health risks.

Abstract:Metal mining in the Extremadura region was very important in the 19 th and 20 th centuries. However, due to different reasons the great majority of mines ceased operations, leading to plenty of abandoned mining sites, most of them with on-site waste dumps. Although metal extraction is not radioactive per se , it is considered a NORM activity. In this study, three former mining sites, in which Pb-V-Zn-Ag, Pb-Ag, and Pb-Zn were extracted, were selected to assess the radiological impact on the population and the environment. The external γ exposure was estimated by determining the effective dose and elaborating isodose maps of the sites. The presence of the mining sites increased up to 0.41 mSv/y the effective dose over the surrounding background, which is below the reference value of 1 mSv/y. In only one mining site, the uranium and radium activity concentration of waste dumps were higher than the surrounding soil. The soil to plant (wild grass) transfer factors were similar to other reported values without the influence of NORM activities. So, no enhanced transfer of radionuclides was observed. The radiological impact on the environment was assessed by the risk to non-human biota using the tiered approach developed in ERICA Tool. The sum of the risk quotients of all considered radionuclides in the most conservative Tier 1 was below 1. Total dose rates for several terrestrial Reference Animal and Plants (RAPs) were estimated using Tier 3, obtaining values below 40 μGy/h. Therefore, the impact on non-human biota can be considered as negligible.

Abstract:Dry riverbeds can transport mining waste during torrential rain events, disseminating pollutants from mining areas to natural ecosystems. This study evaluates the impact of these mine wastes on soils, sediments, and runoff/pore water in the La Carrasquilla dry riverbed (southeastern Spain). An integrated approach utilizing geochemical and mineralogical techniques was employed, analyzing water, soil, and sediment samples from both the headwater and mouth of the riverbed. Soil profiles and pore water were collected at 30 cm, 60 cm, and 90 cm deep, alongside sediment and runoff water samples. The assessment of metal(loid) contamination focused on arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, nickel, manganese, zinc, and lead, utilizing sequential extraction to evaluate metal partitioning across soil phases. Various pollution indices, including the contamination factor (Cf), pollution load index (PLI), potential ecological risk index (RI), and metal(loid) evaluation index (MEI), were employed to classify contamination levels. The highest level of contamination was reported in the headwater, which suggested anthropogenic activities linked to the presence of mining residues as the major source of metal(loid)s. However, an active deposition of As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn was reported in the topsoil at the mouth. In the headwater, a quartz and muscovite-rich zone exhibited the highest Cf for Pb (1022), primarily bound to the soil residual fraction (62.8%). At the headwater and mouth, pore water showed higher concentrations of sulfate, Ca, Na, Cl, Mg, and Mn and higher salinity than acceptable limits for drinking water or irrigation established by the World Health Organization. Runoff-water metal concentrations surpassed established guidelines, with MEI values indicating significant contamination by cadmium (36.1) and manganese (19.0). These findings highlight the considerable ecological risk of Pb and underscore the need for targeted remediation strategies to mitigate environmental impacts in the Mar Menor coastal lagoon.

Abstract:The study was conducted in Cerritos, San Luis Potosí, México, near the Guaxcama mine, focused on environmental contamination (groundwater and agricultural soil) from antimony (Sb), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg). In March 2022, 20 agricultural soil and 16 groundwater samples were collected near the historically cinnabar (HgS)- and arsenopyrite (FeAsS)-rich Guaxcama mine. Hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS) for As, cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry (CV-AFS) for Hg, and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) for Cd, Pb, and Sb were used for the determinations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs). While concentrations of Cd, Hg, Pb, and Sb in groundwater were below detection limits, As levels exhibited a range from 40.9 ± 1.4 to 576.0 ± 1.0 μg/L, exceeding permissible limits for drinking water (10 μg/L). In agricultural soil, As was between 7.67 ± 0.16 and 24.1 ± 0.4 μg/g, Hg ranged from 0.203 ± 0.018 to 2.33 ± 0.19 μg/g, Cd from 2.53 ± 0.90 to 2.78 ± 0.01 μg/g, and Pb from 11.7 ± 1.2 to 34.3 ± 4.1 μg/g. Only one study area surpassed the Mexican As soil limit of 22 μg/g. Sequential extraction (four-step BCR procedure) indicated significant As bioavailability in soil (fractions 1 and 2) ranging from 3.66 to 10.36%, heightening the risk of crop transfer, in contrast to the low bioavailability of Hg, showing that fractions 1, 2, and 3 were below the limit of quantification (LOQ). Crucial physicochemical parameters in soil, including nitrate levels, pH, and organic matter, were pivotal in understanding contamination dynamics. Principal component analysis highlighted the influence of elements like Fe and Ca on phytoavailable As, while Pb and Cd likely originated from a common source. Ecological risk assessments underscored the significant impact of pollution, primarily due to the concentrations of Cd and Hg. Non-cancer and cancer risks to residents through As poisoning via contaminated water ingestion also were found. The hazard index (HI) values varied between 4.0 and 82.2 for adults and children. The total incremental lifetime cancer risk (TILCAR) values for adults ranged from 7.75E − 04 to 1.06E − 02, whereas for children, the values were from 2.47E − 04 to 3.17E − 03.

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) is a toxic metal that can cause adverse effects for the health of ecosystems. The Caudal River is one of the main rivers in the Asturias region (NW Spain), whose basin is highly anthropized, hosting several Hg mines, closed in the last century. Arsenic (As) is also found in the mineral paragenesis of the Hg deposits, posing a greater environmental risk. In the mining sites, remaining old facilities and tailings continue to release these elements into the environment. In this work, samples of fluvial sediments and water were taken, both in areas affected by anthropic activity and in pristine areas, in order to establish the background levels for the critical elements. The mineralogical study of the sediments, combined with EDS microanalysis, is useful to identify mineralogical traps such as Fe oxides or clays to retain the As. The As content in all sampled sediments is above the threshold effect levels (TEL), the possible effect range within which adverse effects occasionally occur, according to the Canadian Sediment Quality Guidelines for the Protection of Aquatic Life. This fact is related to a naturally high geochemical background in the basin, due to the existing mineral deposits. The PEL threshold (the probable effect range within which adverse effects frequently occur) is exceeded by more than an order of magnitude in the sediments downstream of the Hg mines. In these points, the As content in the water, exceeding 700 μg L −1 As, is also above the quality standard established in Spanish legislation. As a result, the Caudal River tributaries in the lower part of the basin do not reach a good ecological state, according to the Hydrological Planning Office, and in some cases their state is deficient, showing low richness and high dominance of macroinvertebrates. Although the concentrations decrease with distance from the source, these findings justify the low ecological quality of the affected watercourses.

Soil microbial biomass and organic C in a gradient of zinc concentrations in soils around a mine spoil tip

Abstract:Soil microbial biomass carbon (biomass C) and its activity were measured in soil from Gabuzkoa (Spain) contaminated with heavy metals from a mine spoil tip. Soil was collected along a natural gradient of heavy metal contamination characterized by different organic C contents, clay contents, cultivation and topography. Biomass C and ninhydrin-N were measured by fumigation-extraction (FE), substrate induced respiration (SIR) and by soil ATP content. Microbial activity was measured by CO2 production and the arginine ammonification rate. The maximum soil concentration of zinc (about 6500 mu g Zn g(-1) soil) was up to 27 times current European Union (EU) limits far agricultural soils. Microbial biomass, arginine ammonification rate and biomass C as a percentage of soil organic C decreased with increasing soil Zn concentration, while CO2 production and specific respiration rate increased. Soil biomass C was negatively (% variance accounted for = 45) and CO2 evolution positively (% variance accounted for = 72) significantly correlated with Zn concentration, in exponential relationships. Both biomass specific respiration rate (% Variance accounted for = 83) and biomass as percentage of soil organic C (% variance accounted for = 76) were more significantly correlated to soil Zn concentration than was biomass alone. It was concluded that both biomass and activity measurements could serve as indicators of environmental stress due to metals in non-experimental sites. Additionally, these 'linked' measurements generally provided more sensitive indicators of environmental stress by heavy metals than either biomass C or CO2 evolution alone. Abstract:The Pb mining area of the valley of Alcudia and the Sierra Madrona mountains (S. Spain) has been exploited intermittently for over 2100 years, since Roman occupation and up until the late 1900s. Red deer (n=168) and wild boar (n=58) liver and bone (metacarpus) were analyzed for Pb, Zn, Cu, Cd, As and Se. Lipid peroxidation, total and oxidized glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), GSH peroxidase (GPX) and fatty acid composition were studied in liver of red deer. The concentrations of Pb in liver and bone of red deer and wild boar were higher in the mining area than in the control area, and higher in the wild boar than red deer, but well below the level associated with clinical signs of Pb poisoning. Liver levels of Cu, Cd and Se were also higher in red deer from the mining area. Red deer from the mining area had 39% less total GSH than in the control area. The percentage of docosahexaenoic acid in liver of red deer from the mining area was 16% lower than in the control area.

Abstract:The N-terminus of all actins so far studied is acetylated. Although the pathways of acetylation have been well studied, its functional importance has been unclear. A negative charge cluster in the actin N-terminal region is shown to be important for the function of actomyosin. Acetylation at the N-terminus removes a positive charge and increases the amount of net negative charges in the N-terminal region. This may augment the role of the negative charge cluster. To examine this possibility, actin with a nonacetylated N-terminus (nonacetylated actin) was produced. The nonacetylated actin polymerized and depolymerized normally. In actin-activated heavy meromyosin ATPase assays, the nonacetylated actin showed higher K(app) without significantly changing V(max), compared with those of wild-type actin. This is in contrast to the effect of the N-terminal negative charge cluster, which increases V(max) without changing K(app). These results indicate that the acetylation at the N-terminus of actin strengthens weak actomyosin interaction.
Assessment of metal(loid) and natural radionuclide pollution in surface sediments of an estuary affected by mining and phosphogypsum releases

Abstract:The prolonged impact over the Tinto River estuary by both the significant pollution by acid mine drainage (AMD) affecting this river and the polluted releases from phosphogypsum (PG) piles has led to the severe environmental degradation of this ecosystem. The aim of this work was to assess the current environmental quality of the Tinto River estuary through the study of the spatial distribution of metal(loid)s and natural radionuclides in the surface sediments from the channel edge. The sediments contain mean concentrations 5-20 times higher than the background values for pollutants such as Zn, As, Cu, Pb, or U, and up to two orders of magnitude higher for P. The studied sediments are heavily polluted by toxic heavy metals and metalloids (Pb, Zn, Cu, and As) according to the US EPA guidelines. Most of the analyzed sediment samples are also strongly polluted by long-lived natural radionuclides, mainly U-isotopes and 210Pb with concentrations up to one order of magnitude higher than unpolluted sediments, mostly due to the contribution by the PG leachates. The enrichment factors (EF) were extremely high (EF > 50) for As and very severe enrichment (25 ≤ EF < 50) for P, Cd, Zn, Cu, and Pb.
Serotonin (5-HT) drugs: effects on appetite expression and use for the treatment of obesity.

Abstract:The pivotal role of 5-HT in the control of appetite was formally proposed nearly 30 years ago. In particular endogenous hypothalamic 5-HT has been implicated in the processes of within meal satiation and the end state of post meal satiety. Of the numerous 5-HT receptor subtypes currently identified, 5-HT(1B) and 5-HT(2C) receptors are believed to mediate the 5-HT induced satiety. 5-HT drugs such as d-fenfluramine, selective serotoninergic reuptake inhibitor (SSRIs) and 5-HT(2C) receptor agonists have all been shown to significantly attenuate rodent body weight gain, an effect strongly associated with marked hypophagia. D-Fenfluramine, sibutramine, fluoxetine and the 5-HT(2C) receptor agonist mCPP have also all been shown to reduce caloric intake by modifying appetite in both lean and obese humans. Specifically, 5-HT drugs reduce appetite prior to and after the consumption of fixed caloric loads, and reduce pre meal appetite and caloric intake at ad libitum meals. Clinically significant weight loss over a year or more can be produced by both d-fenfluramine and sibutramine treatment, but apparently not by the SSRI fluoxetine. Treatment with the preferential 5-HT(2C) receptor agonist mCPP and the serotonin precursor 5-HTP has also been shown to produce weight loss in the obese. Issues around the actual and possible side effects of these compounds, and in the case of d-fenfluramine toxicity, have led to a search for drugs that act selectively on the CNS 5-HT receptors critical to the satiety response. Currently, a new generation of 5-HT(2C) selective agonists have been developed (including Ro 60-0175, Org 12962, VER-3323, BVT-933 and YM348) and at least one, ADP356, is currently undergoing clinical trials. Hopefully, such drugs will be as or even more effective at regulating appetite and controlling body weight, and will also be free of their predecessors' side effect.
Mineral and potentially toxic element profiles in the soil-feed-animal continuum: Implications for public, environmental, and livestock health in three pasture-based sheep farming systems

Abstract:Grazing livestock derive most of their mineral requirements from foraging. The presence of toxic elements in soils has become a significant concern for food safety and ecosystem services. Understanding the mineral content profiles in soil and forage is crucial for assessing animal health, predicting potential transfers of minerals or heavy metals into the food-chain, and assessing threats to the environment and human health. In this study, Na, Mg, P, K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Se, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb were measured to determine the mineral status of three different pasture-based farming systems (with grazing sheep livestock) in a Spanish region of significant economic importance. A risk assessment evaluation of animal, environmental, and human health was performed on soil, forage, feed, serum, milk, and wool. Notably, traces of Pb, and As were identified in pastures in all farms. Our calculation of pollution indices revealed moderate levels of contamination by various elements, including Co, Cu, Zn, Se, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb. The two farms with more intense agrosystem practices showed a significant potential ecological risk, characterized by high soil levels of Hg and Cd. Animals from these farms also had high concentrations of these metals in wool. Although the target Hazard Quotient derived from milk consumption suggests that dairy products from this area are safe for consumption for adults, only milk from a dehesa farm (mix of woodland and pastureland) was free of potential health concerns related to Pb exposure. Our assessment of mineral profiles reveals a cohesive relationship between soil quality and derived animal products, particularly of the Merino sheep breeding and farming system. The results reveal the importance of adopting and reinforcing strategies to preserve dehesas as a sustainable and environmentally friendly agrosystem in the western Mediterranean region.

Abstract:Silver and gold mineralization in epithermal veins was discovered during the 1600s in the Mineral de Pozos area, north-central Mexico. The main period of mining was between 1880 and 1926. Exploitation in the district is estimated at 1,200,000 tons of ore, with average grades of 1.35 kg/ton Ag, and 8.5 g/ton Au. Tailings were deposited (less than 1.2 million tons) along the main creek in the area, under semi-desert conditions, and widely dispersed by fluvial water during rainy seasons. Concentrations of Cr, Co, and Ni in rocks, sediments, and tailings are below average concentrations in the Earth's crust, but Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb concentrations are above crustal averages. Concentrations of As and Pb in groundwater (As = 0.011 to 0.090 mg/l; and Pb = 0.025 to 0.035 mg/l) generally exceed the World Health Organization (WHO) standards for drinking water. Results from humidity cell and leaching column experiments indicate that the potential for leaching As is relatively low (average <0.050 mg/l); Pb concentrations in the experiments range from 0.001 to 0.180 mg/l (average of 0.010 mg/l), and Zn is relatively concentrated (up to 80 mg/l). These results suggest that, given the relatively small amount of mine tailings, the As and Pb concentrations in groundwater may be mostly derived from natural sources rather than from mine waste. The high concentration of Zn in tailings and leachates (up to 306 mg/kg and 80 mg/l, respectively), suggest that zinc could be leaching from the tailings; however, under geochemical conditions of the shallow aquifer (near neutral pH, oxidizing conditions, high Fe content), Zn in solution is mostly controlled by adsorption onto Fe-oxyhydroxides.

Abstract:Dispersion of potentially toxic elements associated with efflorescent crusts and mine tailings materials from historical mine sites threaten the environment and human health. Limited research has been done on traceability from historical mining sites in arid and semi-arid regions. Pb isotope systematics was applied to decipher the importance of identifying the mixing of lead sources involved in forming efflorescent salts and the repercussions on traceability. This research assessed mine waste (sulfide-rich and oxide-rich tailings material and efflorescent salts) and street dust from surrounding settlements at a historical mining site in northwestern Mexico, focusing on Pb isotope composition. The isotope data of tailings materials defined a trending line (R2 = 0.9); the sulfide-rich tailings materials and respective efflorescent salts yielded less radiogenic Pb composition, whereas the oxide-rich tailings and respective efflorescent salts yielded relatively more radiogenic compositions, similar to the geogenic component. The isotope composition of street dust suggests the dispersion of tailings materials into the surroundings. This investigation found that the variability of Pb isotope composition in tailings materials because of the geochemical heterogeneity, ranging from less radiogenic to more radiogenic, can add complexity during environmental assessments because the composition of oxidized materials and efflorescent salts can mask the geogenic component, potentially underestimating the influence on the environmental media.

Abstract:The impact of mining activities on the environment is vast. In this regard, many mines were operating well before the introduction of environmental law. This is particularly true of cinnabar mines, whose activity has declined for decades due to growing public concern regarding Hg high toxicity. Here we present the exemplary case study of an abandoned Hg mine located in the Somiedo Natural Reserve (Spain). Until its closure in the 1970s, this mine operated under no environmental regulations, its tailings dumped in two spoil heaps, one of them located uphill and the other in the surroundings of the village of Caunedo. This study attempts to outline the degree to which soil and other environmental compartments have been affected by the two heaps. To this end, we used a novel combination of multivariate statistical, geostatistical and machine-learning methodologies. The techniques used included principal component and clustering analysis, Bayesian networks, indicator kriging, and sequential Gaussian simulations. Our results revealed high concentrations of Hg and, secondarily, As in soil but not in water or sediments. The innovative methodology abovementioned allowed us to identify natural and anthropogenic associations between 25 elements and to conclude that soil pollution was attributable mainly to natural weathering of the uphill heap. Moreover, the probability of surpassing the threshold limits and the local backgrounds was found to be high in a large extension of the area. The methodology used herein demonstrated to be effective for addressing complex pollution scenarios and therefore they are applicable to similar cases.

Abstract:<p>The validity of soil toxicity databases for predicting ecological impacts in the field is rarely explored. This work was set up to test if laboratory toxicity data and the combined concepts of metal availability and mixture toxicity can predict ecological impact in mining‐affected soils. Metal and arsenic (As) contamination gradients were sampled around five different mines in Mexico where plant cover and abundances exhibited clear dose‐related responses. Soils were analyzed for total and isotopically exchangeable (labile) concentrations of Ni, Cu, Cd, Pb, and As and for soil properties affecting the availability of these elements. Six different indices of toxic doses were compared to evaluate their accuracy in describing the field response expressed as relative abundance and cover. Each index was based on a different method to calculate the sum of toxic units (ΣTU) in soil, with 1 TU equal to the concentration of the element in soil yielding 50% adverse effect on plants with median sensitivity as recorded in a recent database of salt spiked soils. Toxic concentrations in the mine impacted soils were dominated by Zn and As. In the field, 50% reduced cover or abundance was found at 10‐13 ΣTU if these were based on total soil concentrations and thresholds derived from freshly spiked soils, indicating a largely overestimated toxic effect. If thresholds were corrected for differences in availability between freshly spiked soils and spiked and laboratory aged soils, the overestimation of field toxicity was 5‐6 fold, irrespective of the consideration of soil properties. Finally, the ΣTU calculated with labile metals and As only overestimated the field toxicity by factors 1.1‐1.6 (95% confidence interval 1‐7), i.e. rather accurate and indicating some Zn‐As antagonism as confirmed in experimental studies. That latter index of dose yielded a bell‐shaped response on species richness peaking at about 1.6 ΣTU. Overall, this study shows that the current toxicity databases of metals can predict the impact of metal contamination on plant communities within factor 2, expressing the dose as soil labile concentrations and using the concentration addition concept in these mixed polluted environments.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:In the foundation of modern microbiology, Louis Pasteur (of France, working in Paris) as well as Robert Koch (of Germany, working in Berlin) played an essential and pivotal role. After the French-German war in 1870/71, however, the relationships between the two men and their countries were hostile. In this period of bilateral tension, Richard Pfeiffer, working with Koch in Berlin, intellectually and experimentally conceived the concept of endotoxin as a heat-stable bacterial poison being responsible for the pathophysiological consequences of then prevailing infectious diseases such as typhoid and cholera. For Pfeiffer, a hallmark in the definition of endotoxin (in contrast to exotoxin) was that neutralizing antibodies to endotoxin could not be induced. Alexander Besredka, who was born in Russia and succeeded Elie Metchnikof at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, however, demonstrated that – provided appropriate immunisation schedules were applied – endotoxin antibodies could be engendered which were capable of neutralizing the poisonous effects of endotoxin. Anti-endotoxin antibodies also became important in serodiagnosis, another chapter of French–German struggles in which Richard Pfeiffer, the Austrian Max von Gruber and the French Fernand Widal were the prominent figures. Pasteur and Koch, despite their gigantic discoveries and outstanding achievements, did not develop the stature to promote scientific exchange and communication between France and Germany. Pfeiffer and Besredka, although often personally involved in the nationalistic struggle of their countries, never actively engaged themselves in chauvinistic activities. Rather, at the end of their career, they exchanged polite letters, bacterial preparations and sera, thus paving the way for an open and boundary-crossing scientific dialogue. Thus, Richard Pfeiffer and Alexandre Besredka are not only the fathers of endotoxin and anti-endotoxin, but they also stand as symbols for the foundation and visions of the International Endotoxin Society, which sees its mission in bringing together scientists who are interested in bacterial endotoxin, independent of their sex or geographical, political, confessional and ethnic background.
