Abstract:In a regular FAIMS system, a carrier gas is used to drive samples through the drift tube. Thus, high consumption of sample and carrier gas can be expected, especially when multi-cycle detection is needed for high precision detection. In this study, a novel re-circulation mode FAIMS was developed. Ion separation capacity and limit of detection (LOD) of this FAIMS system were investigated. The stability of this FAIMS system was also studied by changing the flow rate of the carrier gas. Using this newly designed re-circulation mode FAIMS system, the detection results of o-, p- m- xylenes in pure nitrogen and helium/nitrogen mixtures were compared. The sample and the carrier gas reserve time which ensure the success of multi-cycle detection was examined. The characteristic parameters (alpha(2), alpha(4)) and their deviation were also precisely calculated through 18 CV-DV spectra. Results show that 0.6 ng o-xylene can be detected in a 25 ml closed loop re-circulation arrangement. The effective detection time is 6.2 min in this detection process. In fact, the sample and the carrier gas used in this experiment are 70 and 826 times less than a regular open loop FAIMS system respectively. The peak position and the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the obtained CV-DV spectra stay almost unchanged during th.entire experiment process. The ion signal peaks can be fitted with a Gauss curve, which means that the stability of the carrier gas flow rate fully meet the requirement for on-site detection. Furthermore, the use of a helium modifier is studied and proved to be an effective method to improve the detection capacity of the FAIMS for VOCs. In conclusion, the gas-saving re-circulation design along with the gas modifiers provide new opportunities for FAIMS systems to be applied on-site high precision chemical detection. High-Pressure Photon Ionization Source for TOFMS and Its Application for Online Breath Analysis.

Abstract:Photon ionization mass spectrometry (PI-MS) is a widely used technique for the online detection of trace substances in complex matrices. In this work, a new high-pressure photon ionization (HPPI) ion source based on a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) Kr lamp was developed for time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS). The detection sensitivity was improved by elevating the ion source pressure to about 700 Pa. A radio frequency (RF)-only quadrupole was employed as the ion guide system following the HPPI source to achieve high ion transmission efficiency. In-source collision induced dissociation (CID) was conducted for accurate chemical identification by varying the voltage between the ion source and the ion guide. The high humidity of the breath air can promote the detection of some compounds with higher ionization potentials (IPs) that could not be well detected by single photon ionization (SPI) at low pressure. Under 100% relative humidity (37 °C), the limits of detection down to 0.015 ppbv (parts per billion by volume) for aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons were obtained. This HPPI-TOFMS system was preliminarily applied for online investigations of the exhaled breath from both healthy nonsmoker and smoker subjects, demonstrating its analytical capacity for complicated gases analysis. Subsequently, several frequently reported VOCs in the breath of healthy volunteers, i.e., acetone, isoprene, 2-butanone, ethanol, acetic acid, and isopropanol, were successfully identified and quantified.

Abstract:A small high-irradiance laser ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (LI-TOFMS) with orthogonal sample introduction was described. High irradiance of 6 x 10(10) W/cm(2) at 532 nm from a Nd : YAG laser was applied in the experiment to get a high ionization degree in plasma and to dissociate the interferential polyatomic ions. Meanwhile, the interferential multiply charged ions resulted by high-irradiance were nearly eliminated in the spectrum by utilizing helium as the buffer gas in the ion source due to three-body recombination, which resulted in a relatively clean background. Improved signal stability was obtained by automated step moving of the sample stage in short time intervals. By using two sets of Einzel lens in transport system, nearly uniform relative sensitivity coefficients (RSCs) were achieved for most of metal elements including light ions which were detected in extremely low sensitivity in previous hexapole transportation instrument. The resolving power reaches 2200, and the detection limits (DLs) are 10(-6) g/g for metal elements in the steel standard. Copyright (C) 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
A demountable nanoflow nebulizer for sheathless interfacing nano-high performance liquid chromatography with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

Abstract:For direct analyses of micro-samples and the hyphenation with nanoflow separation techniques, a low-cost demountable nanoflow nebulizer was fabricated for inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). A small-bore capillary (20 mm) with a tapered tip served as the sample capillary of the nebulizer. The gas orifice diameter, the internal diameter and the wall thickness at the tip of the sample capillary were 160, 20, and 5 mm, respectively, which ensured stable generation of aerosol by the nebulizer at nanoflow rates down to 50 nL min(-1) and an ultra-low aspiration rate (80 nL min(-1)). Narrower aerosol size distribution and higher analyte transport efficiency (nearly 100%) were obtained with the proposed nebulizer than with the previous demountable capillary microflow nebulizer. The sensitivity and detection limit of the proposed nebulizer at 500 nL min(-1) were about one third of those obtained by using the demountable capillary microflow nebulizer at 5 mL min(-1), whereas the precision of the former at 500 nL min(-1) was even to some extent superior over that obtained with the latter at 5 mL min(-1). Furthermore, the ICP-MS instrument could tolerate direct introduction of 100% organic solvents by using the developed nebulizer operating at nanoflow rates. It was utilized to sheathless interface nano-high performance liquid chromatography with ICP-MS for arsenic speciation analysis with good accuracy and precision, proving its strong robustness and good suitability.

Abstract:This article reviews the development of and applications for high irradiance laser ionization orthogonal time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LI-O-TOFMS). LI-O-TOFMS has solved the bottleneck problems in traditional high irradiance laser ionization mass spectrometry, which allows the instrument to acquire explicit spectra with high resolution. A buffer-gas-assisted ion source effectively reduces the kinetic energy of the ions and suppresses the multiply charged ion interference. The pulse train data acquisition technique was applied to reduce the spectrum interference from multiply charged ions and polyatomic ions according to the temporal profiles of different ion packets in the repelling region. Relatively high laser irradiance (≥10(10) W/cm(2)) is preferable for achieving uniform relative sensitivities for different elements in the samples of different matrices. LI-O-TOFMS has been used in the standardless, semiquantitative analysis of solids, which is proved to be a fast and convenient technique for solid sample analysis. By increasing the laser irradiance and reducing the buffer gas pressure, the determination of nonmetallic elements in solids can also be achieved without losing spectral explicity. Recent applications, such as elemental analysis of a single egg cell and acquiring elemental, fragmental, and molecular information of chemicals, were given to demonstrate the potential of the new technique. All of these results reveal that LI-O-TOFMS is an advanced tool in the elemental analysis of solids in terms of modern mass spectrometry.

Abstract:Electrospray ionization (ESI), atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI), and atmospheric pressure photo-ionization (APPI) are the most important techniques for the ionization of liquid samples. However, working under atmospheric pressure conditions, all these techniques involve some chemical rather than purely physical processes, and therefore, side reactions often yield to matrix-dependent ionization efficiencies. Here, a system is presented that combines both soft single-photon ionization (SPI) and hard 70 eV electron impact ionization (EI) of dissolved compounds under vacuum conditions. A quadrupole mass spectrometer was modified to enable direct EI, a technique developed by Cappiello et al. to obtain library-searchable EI mass spectra as well as soft SPI mass spectra of sample solutions. An electron beam-pumped rare gas excimer lamp working at 126 nm was used as well as a focusable vacuum UV light source for single-photon ionization. Both techniques, EI and SPI, were applied successfully for flow injection experiments providing library-matchable EI fragment mass spectra and soft SPI mass spectra, showing dominant signals for the molecular ion. Four model compounds were analyzed: hexadecane, propofol, chlorpropham, and eugenol, with detection limits in the picomolar range. This novel combination of EI and SPI promises great analytical benefits, thanks to the possibility of combining database alignment for EI data and molecular mass information provided by SPI. Possible applications for the presented ionization technology system are a matrix-effect-free detection and a rapid screening of different complex mixtures without time-consuming sample preparation or separation techniques (e.g., for analysis of reaction solutions in combinatorial chemistry) or a switchable hard (EI) and soft (SPI) MS method as detection step for liquid chromatography.FigureScheme of the interface for introduction of liquid samples for vacuum photoionization/electron impact ionization MS

Abstract:The request for novel hyphenated instruments and techniques, capable of affording exhaustive information and results, is a focus continuously watched out. In this context, the present work aimed at the development of an integrated system combining gas chromatographic (GC) separation with mass spectrometry (MS) and (solid deposition) Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) detection. An external transfer line was designed in the lab for the parallel coupling of the two detectors, in such a way to obtain complementary analytical information consisting of an MS spectrum, an IR spectrum and linear retention indices (LRI), within a single analysis. The instrument performance was demonstrated for the analysis of a commercial mixture consisting of 139 hydrocarbons, comprising linear, branched, unsaturated and aromatic compounds. A 100-m poly(dimethylsiloxane) column was employed for the separation, and the outlet flow was split 95:5 between the IR and MS detectors using two uncoated capillaries. The IR spectra were acquired from solid deposits on a zinc selenide disc (-90 °C), over a spot (detector area) of about 0.1 mm2, in the range of 4000-700 cm-1 and at a resolution of 4 cm-1. Final identification of the separated compounds by a library search was achieved by excluding incorrect results, sequentially using a three-filter approach (85% similarity against reference MS and IR library spectra and ±10 LRI unit tolerance). Based on these preliminary results, the GC-MS/sd-FTIR system is a promising tool for the characterization of complex matrix constituents, for which identification is cumbersome, by using only one detection technique.
Performance Evaluation of an EI&CI Dual Ionization TOFMS Hyphenated with a Flow Modulated GC×GC System

Abstract:The use and compatibility of a dual-ionization TOFMS operating an EI source and a CI source in parallel using a single TOF mass analyzer with flow modulated two-dimensional GC (GC×GC) is described. Important figures of merit of the mass spectrometer that are required for two-dimensional GC hyphenation such as acquisition speed, ion source response, EI/CI switching, the GC transfer, and data alignment are carefully investigated and addressed. Improved fast switching ion optics allow switching in a 100 Hz frequency between EI and CI spectra sampled from the same GC×GC effluent. The spectra quality also influenced by the preseparation, especially of the EI source, is compared to a standard setup operating a single quadrupole MS coupled to the same GC system. Further, two setups including and excluding an additional flame ionization detector are presented. High increments in CI sensitivities are achieved by utilizing the high pumping efficiencies of the CI stage of the used mass spectrometer. By leading high flow ratios of the GC×GC modulation flows toward the CI source, the intensity can be increased by factors of up to 37 while maintaining the pressure balance of the less robust EI source. Finally, thermal desorption GC×GC-EI&CI-TOFMS analyses of traffic emission samples from a federal highway in Germany are executed with the presented setup.

Abstract:While field ionization (FI) and field desorption (FD) are established soft vacuum ionization methods in mass spectrometry (MS), the technique of atmospheric pressure field desorption (APFD) has only recently been added to the repertoire. Similar to FI and FD, APFD can yield both positive even-electron ions of highly polar or ionic compounds and positive molecular ions, M +• , e.g., of polycyclic aromatic compounds. Thus, a dedicated APFD source assembly has been constructed and demonstrated to allow for robust APFD operation. This device also enabled observation of the emitter during operation and allowed for resistive emitter heating, thereby speeding up the desorption of the analytes and expanding the range of analytes accessible to APFD. While initial work was done using a Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometer, the new APFD source offered the flexibility to also be used on a trapped ion mobility-quadrupole-time-of-flight (TIMS-Q-TOF) instrument, and thus, it would be possible to be mounted to any Bruker mass spectrometer featuring an atmospheric pressure (AP) interface. Operating an APFD source at a TIMS-Q-TOF instrument called for the exploration of the combined use of APFD and TIMS. Here, operation, basic properties, and capabilities of this new atmospheric pressure field desorption-trapped ion mobility-mass spectrometry (APFD-TIMS-MS) coupling are described. APFD-TIMS-MS is employed for the separation of individual components of oligomers and for the accurate determination of their collision cross section (CCS). This work describes the application of APFD-TIMS-MS on poly(ethylene glycol) forming [M + Na] + ions by cationization and on an amine-terminated poly(propylene glycol) yielding [M + H] + ions. Some compounds forming molecular ions, M +• , by field ionization such as [60]fullerene and a mixture of four polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are examined. In APFD-TIMS-MS, the limits of detection (LODs) of fluoranthene and benzo[a]pyrene M +• ions are determined as ≈100 pg and <1 pg, respectively. Finally, [60]fullerene is analyzed by negative-ion APFD-TIMS-MS where it yields a molecular anion, M −• .

Abstract:The pursuit of high-throughput sample analysis from complex matrix demands development of multiple ionization techniques with complementary specialties. A versatile integrated ambient ionization source (iAmIS) platform is proposed in this work, based on the idea of integrating multiple functions, enhancing the efficiency of current ionization techniques, extending the applications, and decreasing the cost of the instrument. The design of the iAmIS platform combines flowing atmospheric pressure afterglow (FAPA) source/direct analysis in real time (DART), dielectric barrier discharge ionization (DBDI)/low-temperature plasma (LTP), desorption electrospray ionization (DESI), and laser desorption (LD) technique. All individual and combined ionization modes can be easily attained by modulating parameters. In particular, the FAPA/DART&DESI mode can realize the detection of polar and nonpolar compounds at the same time with two different ionization mechanisms: proton transfer and charge transfer. The introduction of LD contributes to the mass spectrometry imaging and the surface-assisted laser desorption (SALDI) under ambient condition. Compared with other individual or multi-mode ion source, the iAmIS platform provides the flexibility of choosing different ionization modes, broadens the scope of the analyte detection, and facilitates the analysis of complex samples.
Development and Application of a Chemical Ionization Focusing Integrated Ionization Source TOFMS for Online Detection of OVOCs in the Atmosphere

Abstract:Single photon ionization (SPI) based on vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) lamps has been extensively investigated and applied due to its clean mass spectra as a soft ionization method. However, the photon energy of 10.6 eV and photon flux of 1011 photons s−1 of a commercial VUV lamp limits its range of ionizable analytes as well as its sensitivity. This work designs a chemical ionization focusing integrated (CIFI) ionization source time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS) based on a VUV lamp for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs). The photoelectrons obtained from the VUV lamp via the photoelectric effect ionized the oxygen and water in the air to obtain the reagent ions. The ion–molecule-reaction region (IMR) is constituted by a segmented quadrupole that radially focuses the ions using a radio-frequency electric field. This significantly enhances the yield and transport efficiency of the product ions leading to a great improvement in sensitivity. As a result, a 44-fold and 1154-fold increase in the signal response for benzene and pentanal were achieved, respectively. To verify the reliability of the ionization source, the linear correspondence and repeatability of benzene and pentanal were investigated. Satisfactory dynamic linearity was obtained in the mixing ratio range of 5–50 ppbv, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) of inter-day reached 3.91% and 6.26%, respectively. Finally, the CIFI−TOFMS was applied to the determination of OVOCs, and the LOD of 12 types of OVOCs reached the pptv level, indicating that the ionization source has the potential for accurate and sensitive online monitoring of atmospheric OVOCs.

On an aerodynamic mechanism to enhance ion transmission and sensitivity of FAIMS for nano-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry

Abstract:Simulations show that significant ion losses occur within the commercial electrospray ionization-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometer (ESI-FAIMS) interface owing to an angular desolvation gas flow and because of the impact of the FAIMS carrier gas onto the inner rf (radio frequency) electrode. The angular desolvation gas flow diverts ions away from the entrance plate orifice while the carrier gas annihilates ions onto the inner rf electrode. A novel ESI-FAIMS interface is described that optimizes FAIMS gas flows resulting in large improvements in transmission. Simulations with the bromochloroacetate anion showed an improvement of ~9-fold to give ~70% overall transmission). Comparable transmission improvements were attained experimentally for six peptides (2+) in the range of m/z 404.2 to 653.4 at a chromatographic flow rate of 300 nL/min. Selected ion chromatograms (SIC) from nano-LC-FAIMS-MS analyses showed 71% (HLVDEPQNLIK, m/z 653.4, 2+) to 95% (LVNELTEFAK, m/z 582.3, 2+) of ion signal compared with ion signal in the SIC from LC-MS analysis. IGSEVYHNLK (580.3, 2+) showed 24% more ion signal compared with LC-MS and is explained by enhanced desolvation in FAIMS. A 3-10 times lower limits of quantitation (LOQ) (<15% RSD) was achieved for chemical noise limited peaks with FAIMS. Peaks limited by ion statistics showed subtle improvement in RSD and yielded comparable LOQ to that attained with nano-LC-MS (without FAIMS). These improvements were obtained using a reduced FAIMS separation gap (from 2.5 to 1.5 mm) that results in a shorter residence time (13.2 ms ± 3.9 ms) and enables the use of a helium free transport gas (100% nitrogen).
Novel Chemical Ion Source for a High-Field Asymmetric Waveform I Mobility Spectrometer Used under Ambient Conditions

Abstract:To satisfy the requirements for a high-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometer (FAIMS), a novel ambient direct current corona discharge chemical ion source is put forward. It consists of an inner line electrode, an outer cylinder electrode, and a traction electrode. The inner and outer electrode radii are 0.08 and 2 mm, respectively. There are four slots in the cylinder electrode for injection of samples and traction of ions. The mass spectrum experiment results show that chemicals, such as acetone, ethanol, aniline, N,N-dimethyl formamide, dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), ethyl acetate, formic acid, acetic acid, and phenol, can be ionized well. Electrometer experiments show that the ion source can produce a stable ion current. By analysis of the mass spectra, we found that the main ions were same at different time indicating that the ion source is stable. The ion source was fabricated on a silicon substrate by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching, which demonstrates that the structure is compatible with micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technics. The ion source is small, has a simple structure, is non-radiative, stable etc. It satisfies the requirements for FAIMS and can also be used in an ambient mass spectrometer (MS), micro MS, and ion mobility spectrometer (IMS).

Abstract:Ultrasonic sample introduction combined with flame assisted thermal ionization mass spectrometry (USI-FATI-MS) was developed to monitor the fractions of preparative liquid chromatography. Recently, ultrasound-based sample introduction techniques have achieved great advance in the field of high-throughput analysis. However, it is still a challenge to directly apply these existing techniques to the analysis of macro volume samples (mL level). In this work, ultrasonic sample introduction combined with flame assisted thermal ionization was used for pretreatment-free direct mass spectrometry analysis of micro to macro volume samples ( μ L-mL level). Utilizing this unique design of ultrasonic sample introduction, liquid sample in the container can be quickly atomized to the gas phase without contact. Then, due to the flame assisted thermal ionization source, desolvation and ionization of the sample droplets will occur immediately. USI-FATI-MS has shown excellent sensitivity, repeatability and great compatibility to solvents and compounds with a wide range of polarity. As a proof of concept, USI-FATI-MS has been applied for rapid monitoring and identification of purified synthetic and natural products in fractions.

Abstract:A compact ion source combining electron impact and thermal ionization has been developed and commissioned in two Multiple-Reflection Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (MR-TOF-MS) setups at the Fragment Separator Ion Catcher at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research, Darmstadt, Germany, and at TRIUMF’s Ion Trap for Atomic and Nuclear science at TRIUMF Canada’s particle accelerator center, Vancouver, Canada. The ion source is notable for its compact dimensions of 50 mm in height and 68 mm in diameter. The ion source is currently in daily operation at both facilities. Design, simulations, and results of combining ions from thermal and electron-impact ionization of different gases (perfluoropropane and sulfur hexafluoride) are presented in this work. The systematic effects of heating power on the thermal source were studied in detail. The source has demonstrated stable and long-term production of reference ions over a wide mass range for the MR-TOF-MS. This versatile ion source has also been used to optimize and investigate the transport of ions with different chemical reactivity and ionization potentials.

Abstract:European Journal of Mass Spectrometry, Ahead of Print. Atmospheric pressure field desorption (APFD) mass spectrometry (MS) has recently been introduced as a new variant of field desorption (FD) mass spectrometry. The development aimed at providing the basic characteristics of FD-MS in combination with instruments equipped with an atmospheric pressure (AP) interface. Hitherto, APFD has been demonstrated to yield both positive and negative even electron ions of highly polar or ionic compounds as well as to enable the generation of positive molecular ions, M+•, of polycyclic aromatic compounds. The prototype setup for APFD was based on a nano-electrospray ionization (nanoESI) source slightly modified to allow for emitter positioning in front of the AP interface of a Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometer. The entrance electrode of the interface was set to negative or positive high voltage with respect to the emitter at ground potential, thereby permitting the formation of positive or negative ions, respectively. This work describes a custom-built device for quicker and more reproducible sample loading on and positioning of field emitters at the entrance electrode of the atmospheric pressure interface of a mass spectrometer. In addition, the device provides means for observation of the emitter during operation and for resistive emitter heating as employed in traditional FD-MS. Emitter heating both speeds up the desorption of the analytes and allows for the desorption/ionization of analytes of higher molecular weight than without emitter heating. In some cases, the signal-to-noise ratio of APFD mass spectra is improved due to higher ion currents effected by compressing the entire process into shorter periods of spectral acquisition. The new setup enables robust and reliable operation in APFD-MS. Moreover, it has been designed as to allow for use on a range of instruments as it can either be used on an FT-ICR mass spectrometer or in combination with a trapped ion mobility-quadrupole-time-of-flight (TIMS-Q-TOF) instrument.

Abstract:Rationale: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by an artificial leather part for car interiors are determined using GC-MS (gas chromatograph coupled to a mass spectrometer) using simultaneous electron and chemical ionization (EI&CI). A device for swift reagent ion switching in CI mode between consecutive runs is presented. Methods: VOCs emitted from the investigated material were sampled onto Tenax® absorption tubes using micro emission chambers and subsequently injected into the GC through thermal desorption. The detector was a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOFMS) simultaneously operating in EI and CI modes during a single chromatographic run. A custom permeation tube setup allowed for swift selection between various reagent ions in CI mode, e.g., [N2 H]+ , [H3 O]+ , [(H2 O)2 H]+ , and [NH4 ]+ . Results: Different reagent ions are swiftly selectable between single GC runs without hardware changes. Differences in precursor ion survival yields and the selectivity of the various reactants were carefully assessed. Several examples for the improved identification of unknown compounds with the available complementary and comprehensive EI&CI data set are demonstrated for a relevant material emission application. Conclusion: The presented technique provides additional value to the standard GC-EI/MS procedure commonly used for material emission characterization. It allows for a non-targeted analysis approach with moderate analysis time.

Abstract:The current study reports on a direct mass spectrometry (MS) analysis method using in-capillary dicationic ionic liquid (DIL)-based in situ dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) and sonic-spray ionization (SSI). The developed method merged extraction, enrichment, ionization, and detection of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in environmental water into a single step. A microliter-scale ternary fluidic system was designed and integrated into a disposable pulled capillary, in which an imidazolium-based germinal DIL reagent activated an in situ metathesis reaction. A penetrating slug-flow microextraction (SFME) process was subsequently initiated with significantly enhanced interfacial areas and mass transfer rates for the analytes of interest, the mechanism of which was revealed by simulations. An SSI assembly was in-house built, and it enabled a Venturi self-pumping using a stream of nitrogen gas flow coaxial to the capillary under atmospheric pressure to automatically spray at the tip of the capillary. The in situ formed DIL could bind with anionic PFC analytes to generate a positively charged complex, which benefits a signal increase of 1 to 2 orders in magnitude in the positive ion mode than in the negative ion mode for most analytes. The high sensitivity allowed the measure of sub-ppb (parts per billion) levels of PFCs in the environmental water samples. The developed method is a promising protocol for MS analysis because of unprecedented ease, significantly enhanced sensitivity, and potentially high sample throughput.

Abstract:Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) is a powerful chemical characterization technique allowing for the distribution of all material components (including light and heavy elements and molecules) to be analyzed in 3D with nanoscale resolution. Furthermore, the sample's surface can be probed over a wide analytical area range (usually between 1 μm2 and 104 μm2) providing insights into local variations in sample composition, as well as giving a general overview of the sample's structure. Finally, as long as the sample's surface is flat and conductive, no additional sample preparation is needed prior to TOF-SIMS measurements. Despite many advantages, TOF-SIMS analysis can be challenging, especially in the case of weakly ionizing elements. Furthermore, mass interference, different component polarity of complex samples, and matrix effect are the main drawbacks of this technique. This implies a strong need for developing new methods, which could help improve TOF-SIMS signal quality and facilitate data interpretation. In this review, we primarily focus on gas-assisted TOF-SIMS, which has proven to have potential for overcoming most of the aforementioned difficulties. In particular, the recently proposed use of XeF2 during sample bombardment with a Ga+ primary ion beam exhibits outstanding properties, which can lead to significant positive secondary ion yield enhancement, separation of mass interference, and inversion of secondary ion charge polarity from negative to positive. The implementation of the presented experimental protocols can be easily achieved by upgrading commonly used focused ion beam/scanning electron microscopes (FIB/SEM) with a high vacuum (HV)-compatible TOF-SIMS detector and a commercial gas injection system (GIS), making it an attractive solution for both academic centers and the industrial sectors.
