Abstract:Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is an important oilseed crop with clear sensibility to salt stress. In this study, we evaluated silicon (Si) effect on the nitrogen metabolism and antioxidant enzyme activity in sunflower plants subjected to salinity. A 4 × 4 factorial arrangement of treatments in a completely randomized design with four replicates was used, consisting of four concentrations of Si (0.0; 1.0; 1.5; and 2.0 mM) and four concentrations of NaCl (0; 50; 100; and 150 mM) in the nutrient solution. The salinity reduced the nitrate content, but the increasing Si concentration in the medium improved the nitrate uptake, leading this ion to accumulate in salt-stressed plants, particularly in the roots. The nitrate reductase activity and the proline and soluble N-amino contents were also significantly increased by Si in salt conditions. The salinity increased electrolyte leakage and reduced the activity of enzymes superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase and catalase in sunflower plants, but these decreases were reversed by Si at 2 mM, thus alleviating the effects of salinity on these variables. We conclude that Si is able to positively modulate nitrogen metabolism and antioxidant enzyme activities in sunflower plants in order to alleviate the harmful effects of salinity.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate whether silicon (Si) supply was able to alleviate the harmful effects caused by salinity stress on sorghum-sudangrass ( Sorghum bicolor × Sorghum sudanense ), a species of grass raised for forage and grain. Plants were grown in the presence or absence of 150 mM NaCl, supplemented or not with Si (0.5 mM Si). Biomass production, water and mineral status, photosynthetic pigment contents, and gas exchange parameters were investigated. Special focus was accorded to evaluating the PSI and PSII. Salinity stress significantly reduced plant growth and tissue hydration, and led to a significant decrease in all other studied parameters. Si supply enhanced whole plant biomass production by 50%, improved water status, decreased Na + and Cl − accumulation, and even restored chlorophyll a , chlorophyll b , and carotenoid contents. Interestingly, both photosystem activities (PSI and PSII) were enhanced with Si addition. However, a more pronounced enhancement was noted in PSI compared with PSII, with a greater oxidation state upon Si supply. Our findings confirm that Si mitigated the adverse effects of salinity on sorghum-sudangrass throughout adverse approaches. Application of Si in sorghum appears to be an efficient key solution for managing salt-damaging effects on plants.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) application to crops is a promising way for the deployment of sustainable agriculture. Here, the effects of Si on salt stress tolerance were investigated in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.)-rhizobia symbioses. Two Moroccan, Ouad-Lmaleh (OL) and Demnate-201 (Dm), and one European, NS-Mediana-ZMS-V (NS-Med), alfalfa varieties were associated to Ensifer meliloti Rm41 rhizobial strain. One-month-old alfalfa plants were exposed to 120 mM NaCl for five weeks with or without 3 mM of Si. The plants subjected to salt stress showed reduced biomass, chlorophyll (Chl) contents and relative water content (RWC) in comparison to the controls. The alfalfa-rhizobia symbiosis was also impaired under stress as reflected by less root nodulation and lower nitrogen (N) content and nitrogen content index (NCI). Added Si significantly increased plant biomass, nodules number, N content, NCI, Chl contents and RWC under salt stress. Results showed that salt-stressed alfalfa increased malonyldialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and electrolyte leakage (EL). However, Si incorporation in the cultured media reduced oxidative damages under salt-stress particularly in NS-Med variety by 26%, 70% and 70% for MDA, H2O2 and EL respectively. The lower amount of MDA, H2O2 and EL in the Si-treated plants seems to be related to its capacity to modulate superoxide dismutase and polyphenol oxidase activities and increase total polyphenol, flavonoid and carotenoid contents. Besides, compatible osmolytes, such as proline, glycine betaine and soluble sugars were found increased particularly in Si-treated OL plants by 46%, 33% and 26% respectively in comparison to Si-untreated plants. Alfalfa varieties reacted differently to Si treatment. Sodium concentration in alfalfa plants increased under salinity and reduced by Si treatment with an increase in the potassium content. Our findings showed that exogenous Si application could be a promising way to mitigate the toxic effect of salt and could improve alfalfa growth and its rhizobial symbiosis when grown in salt-affected soils.

Abstract:To analyze how silicon (Si) fertilizer improves plant growth under water stress, we investigated the growth and root responses of sorghum seedlings to Si application. Seedlings were grown hydroponically at two Si levels (0 and 1.78 mM) and under two water stress conditions simulated with polyethylene glycol. The reduction in dry weight due to stress was alleviated by Si application, accompanied by an increase in root water uptake. Silicon application decreased the osmotic potential of the roots without affecting their water content, showing that osmotic adjustment occurred to increase water uptake. An assessment of root solutes suggested that soluble sugar and amino acids (alanine and glutamic acid) were osmolytes responsible for this adjustment. Root anatomical traits related to water transport were not affected by the Si application. These results improved our understanding of the physiological mechanisms that underlie the Si-induced increases in sorghum growth and water uptake under water stress.

Abstract:In this study, we investigated the regulatory roles of different vias of silicon (Si) applications on soybean biochemical, physiological, and growth responses and their effectiveness in salt stress remediation. The key mechanisms for improving growth and potassium (K + ), ion homeostasis, proline content, and the enzymatic antioxidant capacity of salt-affected soybean plants (50 and 100 mmol NaCl L −1 ) were investigated when potassium silicate was supplied in different vias (non-Si application, foliar spraying at 20 mmol L −1 , nutrient solution addition at 2.0 mmol L −1 , and co-application of foliar spraying at 20 mmol L −1 and nutrient solution addition at 2.0 mmol L −1 ). Salt stress sharply decreased soybean growth by increasing Na + uptake and lipid peroxidation (LPO) content in the roots and leaves. Alternatively, soybean growth, K + /Na + ratio, proline content, and enzymatic antioxidant activity were reduced under moderate and high salinity conditions. However, different vias of Si application increased soybean tolerance to salinity stress by drastically decreasing Na + uptake and LPO concentration, increasing K + concentration, K + /Na + ratio, and proline accumulation, upregulating enzymatic antioxidant activity, and increasing plant growth. As compared to other exogenous application methods, co-application foliar spraying with a nutrient solution of Si produced enhanced results. Furthermore, foliar spraying of Si is an efficient method for salt stress remediation. The present study indicated that Si improved soybean growth by enhancing K + and proline content, and that antioxidant capacity could be used as a mitigation strategy against salinity stress-related damages.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) is the most abundant element on earth after oxygen and is very important for plant growth under stress conditions. In the present study, we inspected the role of Si in the mitigation of the negative effect of salt stress at three concentrations (40 mM, 80 mM, and 120 mM NaCl) in two wheat varieties (KRL-210 and WH-1105) with or without Si (0 mM and 2 mM) treatment. Our results showed that photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll stability index, relative water content, protein content, and carbohydrate content were reduced at all three salt stress concentrations in both wheat varieties. Moreover, lipid peroxidation, proline content, phenol content, and electrolyte leakage significantly increased under salinity stress. The antioxidant enzyme activities, like catalase and peroxidase, were significantly enhanced under salinity in both leaves and roots; however, SOD activity was drastically decreased under salt stress in both leaves and roots. These negative effects of salinity were more pronounced in WH-1105, as KRL-210 is a salt-tolerant wheat variety. On the other hand, supplementation of Si improved the photosynthetic pigments, relative water, protein, and carbohydrate contents in both varieties. In addition, proline content, MDA content, and electrolyte leakage were shown to decline following Si application under salt stress. It was found that applying Si enhanced the antioxidant enzyme activities under stress conditions. Si showed better results in WH-1105 than in KRL-210. Furthermore, Si was found to be more effective at a salt concentration of 120 mM compared to low salt concentrations (40 mM, 80 mM), indicating that it significantly improved plant growth under stressed conditions. Our experimental findings will open a new area of research in Si application for the identification and implication of novel genes involved in enhancing salinity tolerance.

Abstract:ABSTRACT In this study, it was verified whether silicon (Si) affected plant hydraulic resistance, which was one of the significant factors affecting water uptake. Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench. was grown hydroponically under varying silicon levels and exposed to osmotic stresses. Under osmotic stress, reduction in growth, photosynthesis, and transpiration were alleviated as supplied silicon levels increased. These alleviative effects were ascribed to enhancement of water uptake. Although shoot/root ratio was not affected by silicon, estimated apparent hydraulic resistance was lower in silicon-supplied sorghum than silicon-deficient one under osmotic stress. Simultaneous measurement of transpiration and water uptake rates indicated that under osmotic stress silicon-deficient sorghums showed unbalanced water relation that transpiration rate exceeded water uptake rate, while they were balanced in silicon-supplied sorghums. The results indicated that silicon improved hydraulic resistance, allowing sorghum to avoid from decrease in water uptake rate that happens to silicon-deficient sorghum under water stress.
Silicon (Si) Supplementation Alleviates NaCl Toxicity in Mung Bean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek] Through the Modifications of Physio-biochemical Attributes and Key Antioxidant Enzymes

Abstract:Mung bean is an important pulse crop. It is highly nutritive but is vulnerable to salinity stress. Therefore, the present study was aimed to investigate the protective effect of silicon (Si) against salt stress-induced damage to mung bean plants. Mung bean plants treated with NaCl (0, 50 and 100 mM) showed considerable declines in length and dry weights of shoots and roots. Chlorophyll-a (chl-a), chl-b, total chl, carotenoids and leaf relative water content (LRWC) decreased under NaCl stress. However, supplementation with Si in the form of sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) to NaCl-stressed plants ameliorated the adverse effects of NaCl on growth, biomass, pigment synthesis and leaf relative water content (LRWC). Silicon (Si)-supplemented plants exhibited enhanced chl-fluorescence and gas exchange parameters under normal (non-stress) as well as NaCl stress conditions. Salt-induced decline in the frequency of stomata and number of leaves per plant under salt stress was significantly recovered with Si supplementation. In addition, application of Si increased the levels of proline and glycine betaine in mung bean plants. Furthermore, histochemical staining tests showed that the levels of superoxide radicals and H2O2 increased with NaCl treatments, which thereby resulted in increased lipid peroxidation (LPO) and electrolyte leakage. Contrarily, decreased levels of H2O2, lipid peroxidation (measured as MDA content), and electrolyte leakage in Si-supplemented plants under NaCl stress indicated the stress mitigating role of Si. The activities of key antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, APX and GR) under NaCl stress showed an increase under the NaCl regime. However, application of Si further boosted the activities of all four antioxidant enzymes in NaCl-stressed plants. The enhanced Na+ uptake and Na+/K+ ratio in mung bean plants accompanied by decreased K+ and Ca2+ uptake under NaCl stress were reversed with Si supplementation thereby resulting in enhanced accumulation of K+ and Ca2+ and decreased Na+. In conclusion, Si supplementation mitigated the negative effects of NaCl on mung bean plants through modifications in uptake of inorganic nutrients, osmolyte production and the antioxidant defence system.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) has been known to enhance salt resistance in plants. In this experiment, 4-weeks-old alfalfa seedlings were exposed to different NaCl concentrations (0–200 mM) with or without 2 mM Si for two weeks. The results showed that NaCl-stressed alfalfa seedlings showed a decrease in growth performance, such as stem extension rate, predawn leaf water potential (LWP) and the chlorophyll content, potassium (K+) concentration, as well as the ratio of potassium/sodium ion (K+/Na+). In contrast, NaCl-stressed alfalfa seedlings increased leaf Na+ concentration and the malondialdehyde (MDA) level, as well as the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POD) in alfalfa leaves. Besides, exogenous Si application enhanced photosynthetic parameters of NaCl-stressed alfalfa seedlings, which was accompanied by the improvement in predawn LWP, level of chlorophyll content, and water use efficiency (WUE). The Si-treated plants enhanced salinity tolerance by limiting Na+ accumulation while maintaining K+ concentration in leaves. It also established K+/Na+ homeostasis by increasing K+/Na+ radio to protect the leaves from Na+ toxicity and thereby maintained higher chlorophyll retention. Simultaneously, Si-treated plants showed higher antioxidant activities and decreased MDA content under NaCl stress. Our study concluded that Si application enhanced salt tolerance of alfalfa through improving the leaves photosynthesis, enhancing antioxidant performance and maintaining K+/Na+ homeostasis in leaves. Our data further indicated exogenous Si application could be effectively manipulated for improving salt resistance of alfalfa grown in saline soil.

Is Silicon a Panacea for Alleviating Drought and Salt Stress in Crops?

Abstract:Salinity affects around 20% of all arable land while an even larger area suffers from recurrent drought. Together these stresses suppress global crop production by as much as 50% and their impacts are predicted to be exacerbated by climate change. Infrastructure and management practices can mitigate these detrimental impacts, but are costly. Crop breeding for improved tolerance has had some success but is progressing slowly and is not keeping pace with climate change. In contrast, Silicon (Si) is known to improve plant tolerance to a range of stresses and could provide a sustainable, rapid and cost-effective mitigation method. The exact mechanisms are still under debate but it appears Si can relieve salt stress via accumulation in the root apoplast where it reduces "bypass flow of ions to the shoot. Si-dependent drought relief has been linked to lowered root hydraulic conductance and reduction of water loss through transpiration. However, many alternative mechanisms may play a role such as altered gene expression and increased accumulation of compatible solutes. Oxidative damage that occurs under stress conditions can be reduced by Si through increased antioxidative enzymes while Si-improved photosynthesis has also been reported. Si fertilizer can be produced relatively cheaply and to assess its economic viability to improve crop stress tolerance we present a cost-benefit analysis. It suggests that Si fertilization may be beneficial in many agronomic settings but may be beyond the means of smallholder farmers in developing countries. Si application may also have disadvantages, such as increased soil pH, less efficient conversion of crops into biofuel and reduced digestibility of animal fodder. These issues may hamper uptake of Si fertilization as a routine agronomic practice. Here, we critically evaluate recent literature, quantifying the most significant physiological changes associated with Si in plants under drought and salinity stress. Analyses show that metrics associated with photosynthesis, water balance and oxidative stress all improve when Si is present during plant exposure to salinity and drought. We further conclude that most of these changes can be explained by apoplastic roles of Si while there is as yet little evidence to support biochemical roles of this element.

Silicon Improves Rice Salinity Resistance by Alleviating Ionic Toxicity and Osmotic Constraint in an Organ-Specific Pattern

Abstract:Salinity stress severely inhibits the growth of plant via ionic toxicity and osmotic constraint. Exogenous silicon (Si) can alleviate salinity stress, but the mechanisms behind remain unclear. To investigate the role of Si in alleviating ionic and osmotic components of salinity, rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings were grown hydroponically in iso-osmotic stress conditions developed from NaCl or polyethylene glycol (PEG). The effects of Si on the growth of shoot and root of rice under salinity and PEG-derived osmotic stress were evaluated and further compared using principal coordinate analysis (PCoA). We also analyzed the concentrations of Na, K, and compatible osmolytes, tissue sap osmotic potential, antioxidant enzymes activities, and the expression of aquaporin genes. Generally, Si significantly promoted shoot and root growth in rice exposed to both NaCl and PEG. PCoA shows that the Si-induced distance change under NaCl treatment was larger than that under PEG treatment in the shoot, while the Si-induced distance changes under NaCl and PEG treatments were at an equal level in the root. Under salinity, Si decreased Na concentration and Na/K ratio in the shoot but not in the root. However, Si decreased net Na uptake and increased root Na accumulation content. Osmotic potential was increased in the shoot but decreased in the root by Si addition. Si decreased soluble sugar and proline concentrations in the shoot but increased soluble sugar and soluble protein concentrations in the root. Besides, Si promoted shoot transpiration rate and root morphological traits. Although both NaCl and PEG treatments upregulated aquaporin gene expression, Si addition maintained the expression of OsPIPs under NaCl and PEG treatments at same levels as control treatment. Furthermore, Si alleviated oxidative damages under both NaCl and PEG by regulating antioxidant enzyme activities. In summary, our results show that Si improves salt stress tolerance in rice by alleviating ionic toxicity and osmotic constraint in an organ-specific pattern. Si ameliorates ionic toxicity by decreasing Na uptake and increasing root Na reservation. Si alleviates osmotic constraint by regulating root morphological traits and root osmotic potential but not aquaporin gene expression for water uptake, and promoting transpiration force but not osmotic force in shoot for root-to-shoot water transport.
Silicon Supplement Improves Growth and Yield Under Salt Stress by Modulating Ionic Homeostasis and Some Physiological Indices in Hordeum vulgare L

Abstract:The application of silicon through external means has been proved to accelerate stress tolerance in different plant species. In this regard, we conducted an experiment to evaluate the role of silicon applied through rooting media on growth and yield of barley ( Hordeum vulgare L.) under salinity stress. Silicon (200 ppm) was applied through rooting media to barley ( Hordeum vulgare L.) genotypes [salt tolerant-B10008 and salt sensitive-B14011] subjected to 200 mM NaCl stress. A remarkable decline in growth (shoot and root lengths and biomass accumulation), leaf relative water contents (LRWC), chlorophyll constituents, and ionic concentrations (K + , Ca 2+ , P, and Si), with a substantial increase in total soluble proteins (TSP) and concentrations of Na + and Cl − , was observed under salt stressed compared to control plants. Salinity stress lowered the efficiency of Photosystem II (PSII) by hindering absorption/transport of electrons through thylakoid membranes; decrease in size of reaction centers (Fv/Fo) and delayed electron transport from PSII to ETC (Fm/F O ) further confirmed by the appearance of K- and L-bands. Alternatively, the fertigation of silicon (Si) through rooting media significantly ( P < 0.001) enhanced the uptake of essential nutrients i.e., Ca 2+ , P, K + , and Si, while lowered the uptake and/or accumulation of Na + and Cl − concentration in salt-stressed barley plants. Similarly, the PSII efficiency was enhanced by maintaining photosynthetic apparatus intact under salt-stressed plants. The yield response was also lowered in salt-stressed barley plants, whereas Si application improved yield-related attributes (grains weight, number of tillers, and number of grains). Salinity (200 mM NaCl) stress reduced growth (26–58%) and biomass accumulation (25–34%) while application of silicon through rooting media enhanced growth (29–36%) and biomass (16–19%) in barley (B-10008, B-14011) genotypes as compared to salt-stressed plants. This boost in growth after silicon supplement showed improved chlorophyll contents, photosynthetic efficiency, ionic balance, and ultimately better yield (26–55%). Although the tolerant genotype (B-10008) showed better salt tolerance, still the response of sensitive genotype (B-14011) was outstanding after silicon application in saline environment.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) application shows beneficial effects on plant growth; however, its effects on the phytohormone and enzymatic antioxidant regulation have not been fully understood. We studied the effects of short-term (6, 12, and 24 h) silicon (0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mM) application on salinity (NaCl)-induced phytohormonal [abscisic acid (ABA), jasmonic acid (JA), and salicylic acid (SA)] and antioxidant regulation in Oryza sativa. The results showed that Si treatments significantly increased rice plant growth compared to controls under salinity stress. Si treatments reduced the sodium accumulation resulting in low electrolytic leakage and lipid peroxidation compared to control plants under salinity stress. Enzymatic antioxidant (catalase, peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase) responses were more pronounced in control plants than in Si-treated plants under salinity stress. Stress- and defense-related phytohormones like JA were significantly downregulated and SA was irregular after short-term Si applications under salinity stress compared to control. Conversely, ABA was significantly higher after 6 and 12 h but insignificant after 24 h in Si-treated plants under salinity stress. After 6 and 12 h, Si and salinity stress resulted in upregulation of zeaxanthin epoxidase and 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase 1 and 4 (NCED1 and 4), whereas 24-h treatments significantly downregulated the expressions of these genes compared to those in the control. NCED3 expression increased after 6 and 24 h but it was insignificant after 12 h of Si application compared to control. The current findings indicate that increasing the Si concentrations for longer periods of time can regulate the salinity-induced stress by modulating phytohormonal and enzymatic antioxidants’ responses.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is one of the most limiting nutrients in agricultural production and silicon (Si) application is a strategy used to improve phosphate nutrition in plants; however, the action mechanisms of Si remain poorly understood in sorghum plants, under P deficiency of sufficiency. This study aimed at evaluating whether the supply of Si via nutrient solution benefits sorghum plants cultivated under sufficiency of deficiency of P, and investigate the interaction between nutritional and physiological mechanisms involved. In a completely randomized design with six replicates, treatments were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial scheme, characterized by P sufficiency or deficiency, in combination with the presence (1.5 mmol L−1) of absence of Si in the nutrient solution. The experiment was carried out in pots filled with sand. Plants cultivated without Si and under P-deficiency had a reduced accumulation of P in its aerial parts, which compromised its physiology and growth. The inclusion of Si via nutrient solution increased P accumulation and its use efficiency in sorghum plants, and led to a reduction in the electrolyte leakage and an increase in the relative chlorophyll index of leaves. Similarly, the production of phenolic compounds and the quantum efficiency of the photosystem II (Fv/Fm) were also benefited from Si inclusion, as well as the diameter of the stems, which was also augmented together with plants' height and dry matter production in these plants cultivated under P deficiency and sufficiency.

Abstract:Silicon is one of the most significant elements in plants under abiotic stress, so we investigated the role of silicon in alleviation of the detrimental effects of salinity at two concentrations (1500 and 3000 ppm sodium chloride) in sweet pepper plants in two seasons (2018 and 2019). Our results indicated that relative water content, concentrations of chlorophyll a and b, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium contents, number of fruits plant−1, fruit fresh weight plant−1 (g) and fruit yield (ton hectare−1) significantly decreased in salt-stressed sweet pepper plants as compared to control plants. In addition, electrolyte leakage, proline, lipid peroxidation, superoxide (O2−) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) levels, soluble sugars, sucrose, and starch content as well as sodium content significantly increased under salinity conditions. Conversely, foliar application of silicon led to improvements in concentrations of chlorophyll a and b and mineral nutrients, water status, and fruit yield of sweet pepper plants. Furthermore, lipid peroxidation, electrolyte leakage, levels of superoxide, and hydrogen peroxide were decreased with silicon treatments.

Abstract:Althought safflower is a tolerant crop against many environmental stresses, but its yield and performance reduce under stress. The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effect of silicon (Si) application on the possibility of increasing salinity resistance and related mechanisms in safflower. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of Si spraying (0, 1.5 and 2.5 mM) on safflower plants grown under salt stress condition (non-saline and 10 dS m −1 ). Salinity reduced seedling emergence percent and rate, growth parameters and disrupted ion uptake but increased emergence time and specifc leaf weight. Spraying of Si increased plant height, fresh and dry weight, leaf area, relative water content (RWC), potassium, calcium and silicon content, while sodium absorption was decreased. As a result, the K + /Na + and Ca 2+ /Na + ratios were increased. Elevated ion contents and ratios indicate an enhanced selectivity of ion uptake following silicon application and may increase ion discrimination against Na + . Treatment with 2.5 mM Si showed the most positive effect on the measured growth traits. Decrement in leaf area ratio under salinity indicates a more severe effect of salinity on leaf area compared to biomass production. On the other hand, silicon reduced the specific leaf weight under stress and non-stress conditions, which revalues the positive effects of silicon on leaf area expansion. Improvement of RWC may a reason for the icrease in leaf area and biomass production. Data shows that spraying with Si especialy with 2.5 mM can reduce salinity stress damage to safflower and increase biomass production.

Abstract:Exogenous application of silicon (Si) provides benefits to various plant species, including alfalfa. However, knowledge about the effects of Si on seed germination in alfalfa under salt stress is still scarce. Therefore, this study aimed at exploring the effect of Si on Medicago sativa L. seed germination and seedling growth under salinity. Seeds of two Moroccan alfalfa varieties, Ouad Lmaleh (OL) and Demnate 201 (Dm), and the European variety NS Mediana ZMS V (NS Med) were germinated with 200 mM NaCl solution with or without 3 mM Si. The obtained results showed that salt stress significantly reduced germination traits, reserve mobilization and embryo viability. However, exogenous Si counteracted the negative impact of salinity on seed germination by enhancing reserve mobilization and embryo viability. Si alleviated salt-mediated oxidative stress in alfalfa by reducing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), electrolyte leakage and malondialdehyde contents and by increasing proline accumulation. Besides, H2O2 staining revealed that Si reduced H2O2 accumulation induced by salt stress. Enzyme activity analyses revealed that Si triggered the activity of some critical enzymes related to oxidative stress alleviation, including superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase, together with an accumulation of SOD isoforms, as visualized by native gel PAGE. Furthermore, as compared to Si-untreated salt-stressed control, data showed a key role of Si in alleviating the devastating impact of salt by reducing Na+ content and increasing K+ content, leading to higher K+/Na+ ratio. Our findings suggest that 3 mM Si application can constitute a promising way to improve alfalfa seed germination and seedlings growth under salt stress.

Abstract:Salinity is one of the most common abiotic stress factors affecting different biochemical and physiological processes in plants, inhibiting plant growth, and greatly reducing productivity. During the last decade, silicon (Si) supplementation was intensively studied and now is proposed as one of the most convincing methods to improve plant tolerance to salt stress. In this review, we discuss recent papers investigating the role of Si in modulating molecular, biochemical, and physiological processes that are negatively affected by high salinity. Although multiple reports have demonstrated the beneficial effects of Si application in mitigating salt stress, the exact molecular mechanism underlying these effects is not yet well understood. In this review, we focus on the localisation of Si transporters and the mechanism of Si uptake, accumulation, and deposition to understand the role of Si in various relevant physiological processes. Further, we discuss the role of Si supplementation in antioxidant response, maintenance of photosynthesis efficiency, and production of osmoprotectants. Additionally, we highlight crosstalk of Si with other ions, lignin, and phytohormones. Finally, we suggest some directions for future work, which could improve our understanding of the role of Si in plants under salt stress.
