Abstract:Currently, the world's population is aging significantly, and the need for society to promote and maintain healthy aging is expected to rise. Older adults need effective and targeted training products as their physical functions continue to decline with age, creating many complications. In this study, a total of 128 elderly subjects were invited to participate in the experiment using questionnaires, user journey maps, and in-depth interviews to obtain relevant data through in-depth analysis of the transformation and adaptation of the perceptual system, musculoskeletal system, thinking system and psychological characteristics of the elderly to understand their hand training modalities and exercise needs fully. The product uses ergonomic principles and integrated design theory to design an intelligent interactive hand grip training device for the elderly, whose core innovation is the multi-module training form and intelligent interactivity, covering four module functions such as finger pressure training, hand grip training, vibration massage relaxation, and visualization data and emotional interaction. This product's multi-functional overlay design cannot only effectively train the hand of the elderly but also adds humanized emotional interaction design, which significantly improves the user experience and provides design reference for the future development of intelligent interactive hand grip training devices for the elderly.

Abstract:Delayed response performance was assessed in 120 7-, 9-, and 11-month-old infants with correct response defined as either retrieval of a hidden object or gaze toward the location where the object was hidden. Performance improved with age, was above chance for each age group in each condition, and was more often correct with the gaze response. When direction of gaze and reach differed, direction of gaze was more likely to be correct. Infants in the reach condition were more likely to fail to reverse a previously correct response (i.e., to make the A-not-B error). Perseverative responding occurred frequently and was more likely in the reach than the gaze condition. This effect emerged primarily in the context of an incorrect response, which suggests modality-specific sensitivity to the effect of priming rather than reinforcement. Many infants showed strong side biases, and there was a tendency for more reaches to the left but gazes to the right. In a second experiment, 12 5-month-olds gazed toward the correct location more frequently than would be expected by chance but failed to reverse a previously correct response more often than older infants. These findings indicate that response modality has a significant effect on delayed-response performance.

Abstract:Recently, researchers have reported high musculoskeletal symptom prevalence at several US colleges. Since ergonomic interventions have been shown to prevent and reduce disability, it is important to identify the risk factors for developing symptoms among college students. A nested case-control study was completed to determine computer-related ergonomic risks associated with musculoskeletal symptoms. A trained observer completed ergonomic assessments on 52 randomly selected cases and controls. More than 75 percent (cases and controls combined) of the population was exposed to nine potential postural strains including: arms not along side during keying or mousing; lower back not supported; not having chair accessories; computer monitor not adjustable; mouse being too high or low; hand/wrist/forearm in contact with the desk edge; lack of wrist support; and keyboard not being adjustable. Cases and controls were equally likely to have substantially elevated risks but because the sample was small and lacked power, no risks were statistically significant. Since many known risk factors were prevalent in cases and controls, more research is required to evaluate and prevent injury in this population.

Abstract:As age advances, the decline in bodily functions and the rise in age-related diseases pose various challenges to the daily lives of the older population. This scoping review discusses the potential of Electromyography and Electrical Stimulation technologies in addressing aging health issues. This review aims to discover potential design opportunities for EMG and ES technologies in promoting healthy aging by searching for answers from the diverse research purposes, target groups and human-computer interactions involved in the 42 selected articles. Through the thematic analysis, we discovered six categories of applications and four core design themes. Based on our findings, a map has been illustrated to provide visual guidelines for future research and design practice. To enhance the overall health and quality of life for older adults, it would be beneficial to concentrate on three interdependent aspects: independent at home, active outdoors, and mental well-being.
Olfactory ensheathing cells promote neurite extension from embryonic olfactory receptor cells in vitro

Abstract:The role of ensheathing cells, a macroglial cell type with a unique presence in the olfactory system, in the outgrowth of olfactory receptor cell neurites was explored in vitro. Glial cell cultures harvested from both the olfactory bulb nerve layer and the hippocampus were established and immunocytochemically characterized. The expression of the p75 low‐affinity nerve growth factor receptor by ensheathing cells was used to distinguish them from other macroglial subpopulations. Results indicated that ensheathing cell cultures were approximately 80% pure. Olfactory receptor cells were cocultured with ensheathing or hippocampal glial cells or were seeded on laminin or poly‐l‐lysine as controls. Olfactory receptor cells extended the longest primary neurites when cocultured with ensheathing cells. Neurite extension on hippocampal glia and laminin was less extensive than that observed on ensheathing cells but higher than that on poly‐l‐lysine. The neurite outgrowth‐promoting effect of ensheathing cells was, at least in part, mediated by diffusible factors, because olfactory receptor cell neurite extension could also be facilitated when receptor cells were cultured in ensheathing cell‐conditioned media. In contrast, cortical neurons extended neurites of equivalent lengths on ensheathing and hippocampal glia. The results suggest that ensheathing cells may release factors that support the continuous outgrowth of olfactory receptor cell axons and, therefore, the capacity of this pathway to recover from injury. Abstract:{\it Objectives.} To understand how upper extremity disorders related to computer use affect graduate and undergraduate university students; and, to develop hypotheses for prevention and management of these disorders. {\it Methods.} Focus group discussions concerning upper extremity disorders were conducted among sixteen symptomatic undergraduate and graduate students at a private university in the US. Discussions were tape recorded, transcribed, coded for themes, and analyzed qualitatively. {\it Results.} The findings point to four main themes: 1) the essential role of computers in academic, social, and personal activities; 2) the negative impact of upper extremity disorders on students' physical and emotional well-being, including their career aspirations; 3) students' expectations and perceptions of medical care providers; and 4) recommendations for interventions. {\it Conclusion.} Students with upper extremity disorders experience numerous adverse consequences on a college campus. Effective strategies for prevention, and treatment of upper extremity disorders in young adults in universities are needed. Based on this research, an educational and skills development intervention would appear to be appropriate for preventing disability due to upper extremity disorders.

Abstract:Currently, various labor and competitive sectors use computing devices as the primary development tool, one of them being e-sports or electronic sports. Constant use of the computer involves repetitive use of the fingers' superficial and deep flexor muscles, which causes the median nerve to squeeze and irritate in the carpal tunnel space causing carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). There are methods that can minimize stress on the hands and wrists through muscle conditioning. However, there are no quantifiable indicators of the conditioning performed. Therefore, this work aims to develop a device capable of conditioning the flexor muscles and indicate in a quantifiable way the conditioning carried out as prevention of carpal tunnel syndrome. After the analysis of these data, a direct relationship between the surface temperature of the forearm and the muscular conditioning of the flexors is observed. The temperature variation during conditioning is greatest in the distal forearm with a range of [32.76-34.38]°. Post-conditioning temperature retention is greater in the distal forearm over time.

Abstract:Virtually every country in the world is facing an unprecedented challenge: society is aging. Assistive technologies are expected to play a key role in promoting healthy lifestyles in the elderly. This paper presents a Kinect-based interactive system for home-assisted healthy aging, which guides, supervises, and corrects older users when they perform scheduled physical exercises. Interactions take place in gamified environments with augmented reality. Many graphical user interface elements and workflows have been designed considering the sensory, physical and technological shortcomings of the elderly, adapting accordingly the interaction methods, graphics, exercises, tolerance margins, physical goals, and scoring criteria. Experiments involved 57 participants aged between 65 and 80 who performed the same physical routine six times during 15 days. After each session, participants completed a usability survey. Results provided significant evidence that support (1) the effectiveness of the system in assisting older users of different age ranges, (2) the accuracy of the system in measuring progress in physical achievement of the elderly, and (3) a progressive acceptance of the system as it was used. As a main conclusion, the experiments verified that despite their poor technological skills, older people can adapt positively to the use of an interactive assistance tool for active aging if they experience clear benefits.

Abstract:Impairment of hand functions in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) severely disrupts activities of daily living. Recent advances have enabled rehabilitation assisted by robotic devices to augment the residual function of the muscles. Traditionally, electromyography-based muscle activity sensing interfaces have been utilized to sense volitional motor intent to drive robotic assistive devices. However, the dexterity and fidelity of control that can be achieved with electromyography-based control have been limited due to inherent limitations in signal quality. We have developed and tested a muscle-computer interface (MCI) utilizing sonomyography to provide control of a virtual cursor for individuals with motor-incomplete spinal cord injury. We demonstrate that individuals with SCI successfully gained control of a virtual cursor by utilizing contractions of muscles of the wrist joint. The sonomyography-based interface enabled control of the cursor at multiple graded levels demonstrating the ability to achieve accurate and stable endpoint control. Our sonomyography-based muscle-computer interface can enable dexterous control of upper-extremity assistive devices for individuals with motor-incomplete SCI.

Abstract:The musculoskeletal system, constituting the largest human physiological system, plays a critical role in providing structural support to the body, facilitating intricate movements, and safeguarding internal organs. By virtue of advancements in revolutionized materials and devices, particularly in the realms of motion capture, health monitoring, and postoperative rehabilitation, "musculoskeletal electronics" has actually emerged as an infancy area, but has not yet been explicitly proposed. In this review, we attempt to elucidate the concept of musculoskeletal electronics, and summarize the evolution history, representative progress and key strategies of the involved materials and state‐of‐the‐art devices. Therefore, we first introduce the fundamentals of musculoskeletal electronics and key functionality categories. Subsequently, we present recent advances in musculoskeletal electronics from the perspectives of "in‐vitro" to "in‐vivo" signal detection, interactive modulation, and therapeutic interventions for healing and recovery. Additionally, we propose nine strategies avenues for the development of advanced musculoskeletal electronic materials and devices. Abstract:Recurrent or sustained awkward body postures are among the most frequently cited risk factors to the development of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). To prevent workers from adopting harmful configurations but also to guide them toward more ergonomic ones, wearable haptic devices may be the ideal solution. In this paper, a vibrotactile unit, called ErgoTac, and a slide-and-squeeze unit, called CUFF, were evaluated in a limbs postural correction setting. Their capability of providing single-joint (shoulder or knee) and multi-joint (shoulder and knee at once) guidance was compared in twelve healthy subjects, using quantitative task-related metrics and subjective quantitative evaluation. An integrated environment was also built to ease communication and data sharing between the involved sensor and feedback systems. Results show good acceptability and intuitiveness for both devices. ErgoTac appeared as the suitable feedback device for the shoulder, while the CUFF may be the effective solution for the knee. This comparative study, although preliminary, was propaedeutic to the potential integration of the two devices for effective whole-body postural corrections, with the aim to develop a feedback and assistive apparatus to increase workers' awareness about risky working conditions and therefore to prevent MSDs.

Abstract:The world's population is aging, with the number of people ages 65 or older expected to surpass 1.5 billion people, or 16% of the global total. As people age, there are notable declines in proprioception due to changes in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Moreover, the risk of stroke increases with age, with approximately two-thirds of stroke-related hospitalizations occurring in people over the age of 65. In this literature review, we first summarize behavioral studies investigating proprioceptive deficits in normally aging older adults and stroke patients, and discuss the differences in proprioceptive function between these populations. We then provide a state of the art review the literature regarding therapist- and robot-based rehabilitation of the upper extremity proprioceptive dysfunction in stroke populations and discuss avenues of future research.

Intelligent gestural control and ergonomic analysis in barrier-free car seat design

Abstract:Without effective transportation services, the travel, economic activity and mobility of citizens is dramatically impacted, especially the lives of senior citizens. However, none of the research studies to date has designed an ergonomic car seat device for supporting the passenger to ingress or egress the vehicle, as well as in sitting and standing. In this present work, ergonomic concepts were applied to design an ergonomic car seat with gestural recognition. Moreover, 22 healthy subjects volunteered to test the effects of stand-up assistant function in the designed ergonomic car seat. The result showed that the potential of Tibialis Anterior, Gastrocnemius, Trapezius, and Rectus Abdominis muscles in stand-up assistant function reduced. However, the potential of the Erector Spinae and Tensor Fasciae Latae muscles increased. The root mean square of center of pressure in both anterior-posterior and medio-lateral directions using assistant function was smaller than in normal stand-up sequences.

Abstract:Background: How to enhance the quality of life for the elderly has emerged as a key issue in many nations due to the ageing population. Stroke is the most prevalent disease among the elderly; specifically, the hand dysfunction caused by stroke is also a powerful obstacle to the daily life of the elderly. Soft Exoskeletons for Hand Rehabilitation (SEHRs) have become a major trend for the future due to the increasing demand for hand rehabilitation. Objective: To provide a reference for readers in this field by introducing the most recent research developments in the field of SEHR, including their classification and properties. Methods: By reviewing different types of hand rehabilitation exoskeleton research papers and patents, the advantages and disadvantages, differences, and applications of various SEHRs were summarized. Results: According to the driving mode and realizing the function of SEHRs, the structure characteristics of SEHRs are analyzed and compared. The key problems and future development trends of SEHRs were expounded. Conclusion: According to the driving method, the research shows that SEHRs can be divided into Air-Driven Soft Exoskeletons for Hand Rehabilitation (ADSEHRs), Motor-Driven Soft Exoskeletons for Hand Rehabilitation (MDSEHRs), and Hybrid-Driven Soft Exoskeletons for Hand Rehabilitation (HDSEHRs). Future research is required to further optimize the flexibility and adaptability of soft exoskeletons, improve their accuracy and sensitivity, and enhance human-machine interaction with the human hand.
Addressing Data Absenteeism and Technology Chauvinism in the Use of Gamified Wearable Gloves Among Older Adults: Moderated Usability Study

Abstract:Background: Digital health technologies have the potential to improve health outcomes for older adults, especially for those recovering from stroke. However, there are challenges to developing these technologies, such as data absenteeism (where older adults' views are often underrepresented in research and development) and technology chauvinism (the belief that sophisticated technology alone is the panacea to addressing health problems), which hinder their effectiveness. Objective: In this study, we aimed to address these challenges by developing a wearable glove integrated with culturally relevant exergames to motivate older adults to exercise and, for those recovering from stroke, to adhere to rehabilitation. Methods: We conducted a moderated usability study with 19 older adults, of which 11 (58%) had a history of stroke. Our participants engaged in a 30-minute gameplay session with the wearable glove integrated with exergames, followed by a quantitative survey and an in-depth interview. We used descriptive analysis to compare responses to the System Usability Scale between those who had a history of stroke and those who did not. In addition, we analyzed the qualitative interviews using a bottom-up thematic analysis to identify key themes related to the motivations and barriers regarding the use of wearable gloves for rehabilitation and exercise. Results: Our study generated several key insights. First, making the exergames exciting and challenging could improve exercise and rehabilitation motivation, but it could also have a boomerang effect, where participants may become demotivated if the games were very challenging. Second, the comfort and ease of use of the wearable gloves were important for older adults, regardless of their stroke history. Third, for older adults with a history of stroke, the functionality and purpose of the wearable glove were important in helping them with specific exercise movements. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the importance of providing contextual support for the effective use of digital technologies, particularly for older adults recovering from stroke. In addition to technology and usability factors, other contextual factors such as gamification and social support (from occupational therapists or caregivers) should be considered to provide a comprehensive approach to addressing health problems. To overcome data absenteeism and technology chauvinism, it is important to develop digital health technologies that are tailored to the needs of underserved communities. Our study provides valuable insights for the development of digital health technologies that can motivate older adults recovering from stroke to exercise and adhere to rehabilitation.
