Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) has been severely polluting the atmosphere and deteriorating human beings' sustainable lives. Therefore, development of gas sensors for high-selectivity and high-sensitivity detection of NO2 has been attracting increasing attention. The state-of-the-art inorganic NO2 gas sensors require harsh fabrication conditions or toxic materials, making the devices intrinsically eco-unfriendly. Furthermore, in most cases the sensors work at high temperatures. These disadvantages severely impede their practical applications. Herein, we report a room-temperature and highly-integrated NO2 sensor composed of p-type self-assembled peptide fibrillar nanoforests (SPNFs) scaffolded with n-type SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) heterojunctions. The p-n conformations provide efficient access to target gases and allow reliable electron transformations, while the SPNFs afford a large specific surface area and multiporous structures for gas adsorption and SnO2 NPs dispersion, resulting in an ultrahigh selectivity for NO2 detection. Especially, the sensing performance can be optimized by modulating the thickness and density of the SPNFs, showing a high response, short response and recovery times, along with a low detection limitation. Our strategy demonstrates the development of a bioinspired platform by utilizing peptide selfassemblies to fabricate integrated sensors for polluting gas detections.
Three-Dimensional Fe3O4@Reduced Graphene Oxide Heterojunctions for High-Performance Room-Temperature NO2 Sensors

Abstract:Metal oxide/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) heterojunctions have been widely used to fabricate room-temperature gas sensors due to large specific surface areas of RGO nanosheets and enhanced carrier separation efficiency at the interface. However, the sheet stacking of RGO nanosheets limits the full utilization of metal oxide/RGO heterojunctions. Herein, we demonstrate a high-performance room-temperature NO2 gas sensor based on 3D Fe3O4@RGO p-n heterojunctions with a core-shell structure, which were synthesized by self-assembly method and further reduction. The effects of different Fe3O4/RGO ratios and the relative humidity on the sensing performances have been investigated. The experimental results suggest that the 3D Fe3O4@RGO sensor exhibits a good selectivity and high sensitivity of 183.1% for 50 ppm NO2, which is about 8.17 times higher than that of the pure 2D RGO sensor. When exposed to 50 ppb of NO2, the response value still reaches 17.8%. This enhanced sensing performance is mainly ascribed to the formed heterojunctions and the larger surface area of RGO nanosheets. This 2D to 3D heterostructure strategy provides a general route to fabricating ultrahigh-performance room-temperature RGO-based gas sensors.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) reduced graphene oxide (RGO) networks show potentials for highly sensitive gas sensors. However, many insulating materials are usually used during RGO assembly process, which inevitably hinder the electron transfer efficiency, and affect the gas sensing performance. In this work, 3D structures based on nanospheres of conducting polymer layer-bridged y-Fe2O3/RGO hybrids have been designed and demonstrated for NO2 sensing. Polyaniline (PANI), as a conducting polymer, can not only serve as self- assembly reagents to construct 3D hybrid structures, but also play an important role in participating electron transfer through forming p-n heterojunctions between interfaces of y-Fe2O3 and RGO. The manufactured yFe2O3@PANI@RGO sensors show a response as high as 911% when exposure to 50 ppm NO2, being over 124 times those of bare two-dimensional graphene sensors. In addition, excellent selectivity, stability, and low detectable concentration (100 ppb) to NO2 can be achieved for sensors based on this unique structure. It is suggested that the high performance can be ascribed to the formed 3D structures based on as-designed p-n heterojunctions and conjugation effect of PANI. The design strategy as well as constructed 3D RGO can provide a general route to fabricate high-performance gas sensors.
N-Doped Graphene Quantum Dot-Decorated Three-Dimensional Ordered Macroporous In 2 O 3 for NO 2 Sensing at Low Temperatures

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) detection is of great importance because the emission of NO2 gas profoundly endangers the natural environment and human health. However, a few challenges, including lowering detection limit, improving response/recovery kinetics, and reducing working temperature, should be further addressed before practical applications. Herein, a series of N-doped graphene quantum dot (N-GQD)-modified three-dimensional ordered macroporous (3DOM) In2O3 composites are constructed and their NO2 response properties are studied. The results show that compared to pure 3DOM In2O3, reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/3DOM In2O3, and N-doped graphene sheets (NS)/3DOM In2O3, the N-GQDs/3DOM In2O3 sensing materials exhibit higher NO2 responses with fast response and recovery speed and low working temperature (100 °C). In addition, the detection limit of NO2 response for the optimal N-GQDs/In2O3 sensor is as low as 100 ppb. Upon exposure to CO, CH4, NH3, acetone, ethanol, toluene, and formaldehyde, only very weak responses could be observed, indicating good selectivity for the synthesized material. More attractively, the responses of the optimized N-GQDs/In2O3 sensor exhibit no obviously big fluctuation over 60 days, implying good long-term stability. Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets show great potential for gas sensing, but they can hinder the penetration of gas molecules and lead to deteriorated sensing performances. Hence, construction of 2D nanosheet-based gas sensing materials with unique structures is desirable for high-performance gas sensing. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) binary nanosheet heterostructure based on 3D cobalt sulfide (CoS) nanoflower/graphene nanosheet hybrid was constructed for room-temperature NO2 gas sensing. The 3D CoS/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) hybrid derived from a mixture of Co3O4 nanoflowers and graphene oxide nanosheets was facilely formed via in-situ sulfidation and reduction processes. The resistance response of as-assembled gas sensor based on 3D CoS nanoflower/graphene nanosheet hybrid to 1 ppm NO2 was 39.7%, which was 4.2 and 3.1 times higher than that of CoS and rGO sensors, respectively. A response as high as 10.5% was achieved even when the device was exposed to NO2 gas with a low concentration of 50 ppb. Furthermore, the hybrid device exhibited linear response characteristic, high selectivity, good repeatability, as well as long-term stability. Overall, the proposed design strategy together with the as-constructed structures can pave the way for the development of high-performance gas sensors based on graphene hybrids.

Abstract:This study presents three-dimensional (3D) MoS2/reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/graphene quantum dots (GQDs) hybrids with improved gas sensing performance for NO2 sensors. GQDs were introduced to prevent the agglomeration of nanosheets during mixing of rGO and MoS2. The resultant MoS2/rGO/GQDs hybrids exhibit a well-defined 3D nanostructure, with a firm connection among components. The prepared MoS2/rGO/GQDs-based sensor exhibits a response of 23.2% toward 50 ppm NO2 at room temperature. Furthermore, when exposed to NO2 gas with a concentration as low as 5 ppm, the prepared sensor retains a response of 15.2%. Compared with the MoS2/rGO nanocomposites, the addition of GQDs improves the sensitivity to 21.1% and 23.2% when the sensor is exposed to 30 and 50 ppm NO2 gas, respectively. Additionally, the MoS2/rGO/GQDs-based sensor exhibits outstanding repeatability and gas selectivity. When exposed to certain typical interference gases, the MoS2/rGO/GQDs-based sensor has over 10 times higher sensitivity toward NO2 than the other gases. This study indicates that MoS2/rGO/GQDs hybrids are potential candidates for the development of NO2 sensors with excellent gas sensitivity.

Enabling Quick Response to Nitrogen Dioxide at Room Temperature and Limit of Detection to Ppb Level by Heavily n-Doped Graphene Hybrid Transistor

Abstract:Sensitive detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is of significance in many areas for health and environmental protections. In this work, we developed an efficient NO2 sensor that can respond within seconds at room temperature, and the limit of detection (LOD) is as low as 100 ppb. Coating cyano-substituted poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (CN-PPV) films on graphene (G) layers can dope G sheets effectively to a heavy n state. The influences of solution concentrations and annealing temperatures on the n-doping effect were investigated in detail. The CN-PPV–G transistors fabricated with the optimized parameters demonstrate active sensing abilities toward NO2. The n-doping state of CN-PPV–G is reduced dramatically by NO2, which is a strong p-doping compound. Upon exposure to 25 ppm of NO2, our CN-PPV–G sensors react in 10 s, indicating it is almost an immediate response. LOD is determined as low as 100 ppb. The ultrahigh responding speed and low LOD are not affected in dry air. Furthermore, cycling use of our sensors can be realized through simple annealing. The superior features shown by our CN-PPV–G sensors are highly desired in the applications of monitoring the level of NO2 in situ and setting immediate alarms. Our results also suggest that transfer curves of transistors can react very promptly to the stimulus of target gas and, thus, are very promising in the development of fast-response sensing devices although the response values may not reach maximum as a tradeoff.

W18O49 Nanofibers Functionalized with Graphene as a Selective Sensing of NO2 Gas at Room Temperature

Abstract:Recent trends in two-dimensional (2D) graphene have demonstrated significant potential for gas-sensing applications with significantly enhanced sensitivity even at room temperature. Herein, this study presents fabrication of distinctive gas sensor based on one-dimensional (1D) W18O49 nanofibers decorated 2D graphene, specifically coated on copper (Cu)-based interdigitated electrodes formed by DC sputtering, which can selectively detect NO2 gas at room temperature. The sensor device fabricated using W18O49/Gr1.5% (i.e., W18O49 nanofibers hybrid nanocomposite with 1.5 wt % graphene) displays excellent overall sensing performance at 27 °C (room temperature) with high response (∼150-160 times) to NO2 gas. The W18O49/Gr1.5%-based sensor device reflects the highly selective detection toward NO2 gas among various gases with quick response time of 3 s and speedy recovery in 6 s. The limit of detection of ∼0.3 ppm with excellent reproducibility and stability for 3 months in all weather conditions (tested in humidity conditions 20-97%) are superior features of the device under test. However, W18O49/Gr3% displayed higher selectivity for NO2 but resulted with comparatively reduced sensitivity than W18O49/Gr1.5% sensor. The enhanced sensing performance could be attributed to the graphene content to decorate the nanofibers on it, oxygen vacancies/defects, and the contacts between the sensing material and Cu. This favorable synthesis and properties of self-assembled hybrid composite materials provide a potential utilization for detecting NO2 gas in environmental safety inspection.

Abstract:A chemiresistive gas sensor based on a three-dimensional Ag-modified reduced graphene oxide (3D Ag-rGO) aerogel is reported. We improve the graphene-based sensor performance by optimization of operating temperature, chemical modification, and new design of the material geometrical structure. The self-assembly and Ag nanoparticle (NP) decoration of the Ag-rGO aerogel are realized by a facile, one-step hydrothermal method. An integrated low-power microheater fabricated on a micromachined SiO2 membrane is employed to enhance the performance of the sensor with a fast response to NO2 and a shortened recovery time. The 3D Ag-rGO-based sensor at a temperature of 133 °C exhibits the highest response. At the same time, the response to other gases is suppressed while the response of the Ag-rGO sensor toward ammonia at 133 °C is reduced to half of the value at room temperature, demonstrating a greatly improved selectivity toward NO2. Additionally, the sensor exhibits a remarkably fast response to 50 ppb NO2 and a low limit of detection of 6.9 ppb.
Highly-sensitive NO2 gas sensors based on three-dimensional nanotube graphene and ZnO nanospheres nanocomposite at room temperature

Abstract:NO2 sensing devices derived from three-dimensional (3D) nanotube graphene (NTG) and ZnO nanosphere nanocomposite are proposed for room temperature (RT) operation. The nickel nanowires were grown chemically, then graphene was grown onto the obtained nickel nanowires via chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The 3D NTG was then prepared through etching the nickel nanowires, while synthesis of the NTG/ZnO composite was achieved via the hydrothermal method. The sensing performance of these NTG and NTG/ZnO gas sensors to NO2 was systematically investigated. The NTG gas sensor responded with a 22.5% change upon being exposed to 50 ppm of NO2, while the response of the NTG/ZnO device reached 47.8% when exposed to the same NO2 concentration. Furthermore, these devices were also capable of detecting concentrations of NO2 as low as 100 ppb. In addition, NTG and NTG/ZnO gas sensors were found to have good selectivity and repeatability. According to the analysis of the sensing mechanism for the NTG/ZnO composite, the high response of the sensing device is attributed to the heterostructure between NTG and ZnO. When the device is exposed to air and NO2, the barrier changes significantly, thus causing a change of resistance.

Confined Formation of Ultrathin ZnO Nanorods/Reduced Graphene Oxide Mesoporous Nanocomposites for High-Performance Room-Temperature NO 2 Sensors.

Abstract:Here we demonstrate high-performance room-temperature NO sensors based on ultrathin ZnO nanorods/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) mesoporous nanocomposites. Ultrathin ZnO nanorods were loaded on rGO nanosheets by a facile two-step additive-free solution synthesis involving anchored seeding followed by oriented growth. The ZnO nanorod diameters were simply controlled by the seed diameters associated with the spatial confinement effects of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets. Compared to the solely ZnO nanorods and rGO-based sensors, the optimal sensor based on ultrathin ZnO nanorods/rGO nanocomposites exhibited higher sensitivity and quicker p-type response to parts per million level of NO at room temperature, and the sensitivity to 1 ppm of NO was 119% with the response and recovery time being 75 and 132 s. Moreover, the sensor exhibited full reversibility, excellent selectivity, and a low detection limit (50 ppb) to NO at room temperature. In addition to the high transport capability of rGO as well as excellent NO adsorption ability derived from ultrathin ZnO nanorods and mesoporous structures, the superior sensing performance of the nanocomposites was attributed to the synergetic effect of ZnO and rGO, which was realized by the electron transfer across the ZnO-rGO interfaces through band energy alignment.
ZnO/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite with synergic enhanced gas sensing performance for the effective detection of NO2 at room temperature

Abstract:Here, we demonstrate room temperature NO 2 sensors based on ZnO/rGO nanocomposites by a facile hydrothermal method. The ZnO nanoparticles (20 ~ 50 nm) were wrapped by film-like rGO with different contents (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 wt %). They all exhibit p-type sensing toward NO 2 at room temperature. The content of rGO shows an obvious effect on the sensing properties. The ZnO NPs-1% rGO has a high response of 5.21 to 10 ppm NO 2 with a response/recovery time of 198/144 s. The sensing mechanism is discussed. The gas-sensitive properties are derived from the strong synergistic effect between the smaller particles of ZnO and rGO.

Abstract:A facile solvothermal method has been employed to fabricate ZnCo zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF) nanoparticles intercalated graphene nanosheet (ZnCo-ZIF/GN), in which ZnCo-ZIF nanoparticles are uniformly distributed. The optimized ZnCo-ZIF/GN-120 sensor has a highly sensitive response of 54.61 for 100 ppm of NO2, and the detection limit reaches 10 ppb at room temperature (rt, 22 °C; relative humidity, 30%). The ZnCo-ZIF/GN-120 sensor is shown to have good selectivity, excellent stability, and repeatability for NO2 detection. The modified EDA groups not only enable selective adsorption to significantly enrich NO 2 molecules around the interface but also realize a favorable modulation of SnO 2 /EDA-rGO electronic structure by increasing the Fermi level of rGO, through which the sensing performance of NO 2 is synergistically enhanced. The response of the SnO 2 /EDA-rGO sensor toward 1 ppm NO 2 reaches 282%, which exceeds the corresponding SnO 2 /rGO sensor by a factor of 2.8. It also exhibits a low detection limit down to 100 ppb, enhanced selectivity, and rapid response/recovery kinetics. This approach to designing a novel heterojunction with significantly enhanced chemical and electric effects may shed light on the future engineering of gas-sensing materials.

Porous reduced graphene oxide for ultrasensitive detection of nitrogen dioxide

Abstract:The defect engineering in graphene plays a significant role for the application of gas sensors. In this work, we proposed an efficient method to prepare ultrasensitive gas sensors based on the porous reduced graphene oxide (PRGO). Photo-Fenton etching was carried out on GO nanosheets in a controlled manner to enrich their vacancy defects. The resulting porous graphene oxide (PGO) was then drop-coated on interdigital electrodes and hydrothermal reduced at 180 °C. Controllable reduction was achieved by varying the water amount. The gas sensor based on PRGO-5 min-6 h exhibited superior sensing and selective performance toward nitrogen dioxide (NO2), with an exceptional high sensitivity up to 12 ppm−1. The theoretical limit of detection is down to 0.66 ppb. The excellent performance could be mainly attributed to the typical vacancy defects of PRGO. Some residue carboxylic groups on the edges could also facilitate the adsorption of polar molecules. The process has a great potential for scalable fabrication of high-performance NO2 gas sensors.

Abstract:A recent progress in new emerging two-dimensional（2 D） materials has provided promising opportunity for gas sensing in ultra-low detectable concentration.In this work,we have demonstrated a flexible NO 2 gas sensor with porous structure graphene on polyethylene terephthalate substrates operating at room temperature.The gas sensor exhibited good performance with response of 1.2%and a fast response time within 30 s after exposure to50 × 10 -9 NO 2 gas.As porous structure of graphene increased the surface area,the sensor showed high sensitivity of ppb level for NO 2 detection.Au nanoparticles were decorated on the surface of the porous structure graphene skeleton,resulting in an incensement of response compared with pristine graphene.Au nanoparticles-decorated graphene exhibits not only better sensitivity（1.5-1.6 times larger than pristine graphene） for NO 2 gas detection,but also fast response.The sensor was found to be robust and sensitive under the cycling bending test,which could also be ascribed to the merits of graphene.This porous structure graphene-based gas sensor is expected to enable a simple and inexpensive flexible gas sensing platform.
Three-dimensional Au Nanoparticles-Decorated Γ-Fe2o3@reduced Graphene Oxide Core-Shell Heterojunctions for Highly Sensitive Room-Temperature Gas Sensors

Abstract:Au nanoparticles (Au NPs)-decorated three-dimensional (3D) reduced graphene oxide (RGO)-wrapped gamma-Fe2O3 nanospheres (gamma-Fe2O3@RGO) heterojunctions have been synthesized via a combination of self-assembly and in-suit ultrasound-induced decoration method. The Au NPs-decorated gamma-Fe2O3@RGO (gamma-Fe2O3@RGO-Au) hetero-junctions sensor exhibits an excellent response of 384% to 50 ppm NO2 at room temperature, which is enhanced compared to the sensors based on bare RGO (35%) and gamma-Fe2O3@RGO (243%). Furthermore, the calculation based on density functional theory (DFT) has been used to simulate the interaction between NO2 gas and sensing materials, thereby providing a theoretical basis for our experimental results. Moreover, the enhanced gas-sensing properties of gamma-Fe2O3@RGO-Au have been explained by combing the 3D structure, the as-formed heterojunctions with chemical and electronic effect of Au NPs. Our results demonstrate an effective strategy for designing high performance RGO-based sensors based on 3D core-shell heterojunctions.
Nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots-modified mesoporous SnO2 hierarchical hollow cubes for low temperature detection of nitrogen dioxide

Abstract:The exploration of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas sensor with high response, fast response and recovery speed, and low working temperature is still an urgent challenge. In this work, a novel SnO2 hierarchical hollow cube composed of ultrathin mesoporous nanosheets was successfully prepared via a simple sulfidation-oxidation method, and nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) were evenly modified on the surface of SnO2. The prepared N-GQDs modified SnO2 (NG/Snx) shows an improved response, and the optimal sample (NG/Sn1.5) response (Rg/Ra = 417) toward 1 ppm NO2 is approximately 2.2 times that of pure SnO2 at 130 °C. Moreover, the NG/Sn1.5 sensing material exhibits fast response and recovery speed, good selectivity, repeatability, and long-term stability. More attractively, the NG/Sn1.5 sensor has outstanding detection ability (Rg/Ra = 25.3) for low concentration NO2 (100 ppb). The significantly improved NO2 sensing performance of NG/Sn1.5 sensing material is mainly attributed to the zero-dimensional/three-dimensional (0D/3D) heterostructure construction and N doping, which increases the space charge modulation depth and NO2 adsorption active sites of the composite material. In addition, the mesoporous hierarchical cubic structure is beneficial to the improvement of NO2 sensing performance due to its stable gas diffusion channels, large specific surface area, and abundant nanoscale grain boundaries. The results obtained herein may provide new ideas for the preparation of high performance NO2 sensors at low temperatures.

Abstract:Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets were self-assembled onto the surfaces of electrospun polymer nanofibers to form an ultrathin coating. These rGO/polymer composite nanofibers were used to fabricate nitrogen dioxide (NO2) sensor. This sensor can be performed at room temperature, and it exhibited a high sensitivity of 1.03 ppm(-1) with excellent selectivity and good reversibility. Furthermore, the limit of detection was experimentally measured to be as low as 150 ppb, and this value is much lower than the threshold exposure limit proposed by American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (200 ppb).
