Abstract:The adiabatic potential energy surfaces (PES) of a-L-Fuc-(1 ! 3)-a-L-Fuc and their counterparts disulfated at 2,2 0 and 4,4 0, and tetrasulfated at 2,2 0,4,4 0, which are representative of fucoidan structures, were obtained using the MM3 force field, and plotted as contour maps and as 2D graphs representing the energy versus the w angle. The surfaces of the corresponding trisaccharides were also obtained and represented by a single 3D contour map for which the energy is plotted against the two w glycosidic angles. For the nonsulfated disaccharide, similar populations of two minima occur. A substantial sulfate effect is observed. Whereas sulfation on both of the 2-positions shift the global minimum to positive w angles, sulfation on both of the 4-positions deepen the well at negative w values. A similar effect occurred in their galactose counterparts. Sulfation on the 2and 4-positions carry the additive effect of both groups. The same trend was observed for both linkages present in the trisaccharides, with minor differences. For instance, the 4,4 0,400 trisulfated compound exhibits a trend by which the glycosidic linkage closer to the nonreducing end appears to be highly flexible, with similar energies in both conformers. The effects of parasitism on sex allocation of a hermaphroditic acorn barnacle

Abstract:Sex allocation theory predicts the adaptive allocation of resources to male versus female reproduction in simultaneous hermaphrodites in response to individual characteristics or environmental factors. Because parasites uptake resources from their hosts, their presence could affect the sex allocation of the hosts. We investigated the effects of infestation status and infestation intensity by the rhizocephalan barnacle on reproduction, including sex allocation, of the host intertidal barnacle . Feeding activity was also examined as a factor related to resource intake. Both male and female reproductive investment decreased with increasing parasite infestation, and the sex allocation of large infested hosts was more male-biased than that of large uninfested hosts. Moreover, in contrast to the model prediction that male investment does not change under resource limitation, male investment decreased in infested hosts whose resources were taken by parasites. This reduction in male investment could be explained by changes in mating group size, since infested hosts have shorter penises and consequently are able to access fewer mating partners.

Impact on reproductive performance and body condition in a small limpet parasitized by a large castrator pea crab

Abstract:Parasitic castrators utilize the energy reserves that the host allocates on reproduction resulting in sterilization of the host. However, whether other processes (e.g., growth) are also impaired depends on the balance between the castrator's energy requirements and the available resources that the castrated host does not use in reproduction. We investigated whether the castrator pea crab Calytraeotheres garthi alters body condition, reproductive performance, and occurrence of copulation in its limpet host Bostrycapulus odites. For this purpose, we examined the anatomy of the ovary, the seminal receptacles and the body condition of parasitized and unparasitized limpets. The histology of the female gonad of parasitized limpets revealed the ovarian tubules are smaller and characterized by a greater proportion of intertubular and intratubular free space compared to non-parasitized individuals. The body condition of female limpets from all sizes (during summer) and those larger than ~16 mm (during spring and autumn) were impacted by the pea crab. These results are in contrast to that previously reported in the comparatively larger limpet species Crepidula cachimilla, in which the same pea crab species does not alter or even increase the host body weight. We concluded this pea crab species can drastically impair its host's reproduction and body condition although deleterious effects are species-specific and likely depend on limpet body size. The histology of seminal receptacles revealed an uncommon disposition of spermatozoa (i.e. excessive debris and acrosomes detached from epithelium) in seminal receptacles of some parasitized limpets. However, this analysis failed to determine whether sperm derived from present matings or previous of pea crab infection. Further studies are needed to address whether pea crabs interfere with the mating behaviour of limpets and if the alterations in sperm disposition are a consequence of castration.

Parasitic copepods affect morphospace and diet of larvae of a temperate reef fish

Abstract:The effects of ectoparasites on larvae of the clingfish Gobiesox marmoratus were evaluated at the dietary and morphometric levels. The larvae and ectoparasites were collected by nearshore plankton samplings during October, November and December 2013 off El Quisco Bay, central Chile. The standardized abundance of total larvae and those ectoparasitized larvae (PL) was positively related and high parasite prevalence was found throughout the sampling period (up to 38%). Geometric morphometrics analyses indicate main changes in the shape through early ontogeny and subtle but significant variations between PL and non-parasitized larvae (NPL). Prey composition varied between PL and NPL; small size (<6 mm standard length, LS ) parasitized larval G. marmoratus ate mostly gastropod larvae, whereas small non-parasitized specimens ate mainly cirripede nauplii. All larger (>8 mm LS ), pre-settlement stages parasitized by Trifur and, or Caligus copepods had content in their gut, suggesting that ectoparasites did not diminish prey capture in host with larger size. Morphometric and dietary changes occurring during larval development were decoupled, both for PL and NPL. The maintenance of a slender, more hydrodynamic body through pelagic development and the ingestion of less-mobile prey in PL suggests non-lethal effects of ectoparasitism on rocky-reef fish larvae.
Effects of parasitic freshwater mussels on their host fishes: a review

Abstract:Freshwater mussels in the order Unionida are highly adapted to parasitize fish for the primary purpose of dispersal. The parasitic larval stage affixes itself to the gills or fins of the host where it becomes encysted in the tissue, eventually excysting to develop into a free-living adult. Research on the parasitic interactions between unionids and their host fishes has garnered attention recently due to the increase in worldwide preservation efforts surrounding this highly endangered and ecologically significant order. With the exception of heavy infestation events, these mussels cause minor effects to their hosts, typically only observable effect in combination with other stressors. Moreover, the range of effect intensities on the host varies greatly with the species involved in the interaction, an effect that may arise from different evolutionary strategies between long- and short-infesting mussels; a distinction not typically made in conservation practices. Lower growth and reduced osmotic potential in infested hosts are commonly observed and correlated with infestation load. These effects are typically also associated with increases in metabolic rate and behaviour indicative of stress. Host fish seem to compensate for this through a combination of rapid wound healing in the parasitized areas and higher ventilation rates. The findings are heavily biased towards Margaritifera margaritifera, a unique mussel not well suited for cross-species generalizations. Furthermore, the small body of molecular and genetic studies should be expanded as many conclusions are drawn from studies on the ultimate effects of glochidiosis rather than proximate studies on the underlying mechanisms.
A Rhizocephalan Parasite Induces Pervasive Effects on Its Shrimp Host

Abstract:Rhizocephalan barnacles are parasites of crustaceans that are known for dramatic effects on hosts, including parasitic castration, feminization, molt inhibition, and the facilitation of epibiosis. Most research on rhizocephalans has focused on carcinized hosts, with relatively little research directed to shrimp hosts that may experience distinct consequences of infection. Here, we describe a high-prevalence rhizocephalan-shrimp system in which multiple host changes are associated with infection: the dock shrimp Pandalus danae infected by the rhizocephalan Sylon hippolytes. In field-collected P. danae, infection by Sylon was associated with development of female sex characters at a smaller size and greater probability of epibiosis. Standardized video observations showed that infected P. danae performed grooming activities at higher rates than uninfected shrimp, suggesting that inhibited molting rather than direct behavioral modification is a likely mechanism for higher epibiosis rates. There was no difference in the composition of grooming behavior types or in general activity between infected and uninfected shrimp. Fatty acid compositions differed with infection, but total lipid concentrations did not, suggesting that parasite-driven shifts in host resource allocation were compensated or redirected from unmeasured tissues. Our results show that Sylon alters its host's role by provisioning an epibiotic substrate and also that it influences host physiology, resulting in feminization and fatty acid shifts. This study lays the groundwork for expanding rhizocephalan-shrimp research and encourages recognition of oft-ignored roles of parasitism in ecological communities.

Abstract:Some aspects of the reproductive biology of the widespread boreal hermit crab Pagurus middendorffii Brandt, 1851 were studied. Samples were collected monthly from November 2022 to November 2023 at a depth of 1–3 m in Zhitkov Bay (Russky Island, Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan). About 38% of the specimens were infected with parasitic crustaceans. Among healthy hermit crabs, the size of the calcified part of the carapace ( SL ) ranged from 1.9 to 6.6 mm (average 4.53 ± 0.95) for males, from 1.9 to 5.5 mm (average 3.67 ± 0.68) for females, and from 1.9 to 5.3 mm (average 3.56 ± 0.62 mm) for ovigerous females. The male to female ratio during the study period varied from 0.6 to 4.0 with an average of 2.2. Spawning commenced in late October and ceased in late November; the incubation period lasted 6.5 months and the embryonic diapause was absent. Repeated spawning was not observed. A comparative analysis of the reproductive characteristics of hermit crabs from different regions showed that changes in the temperature regime influence the timing of spawning and the duration of the incubation period, which significantly increases due to slow embryonic development at low temperatures in some species and due to embryonic diapause in others.

Abstract:Pea crabs (Decapoda, Pinnotheridae De Haan, 1833) are host to multiple species of ectoparasitic (Bopyridae Rafinesque, 1815) and endoparasitic (Entoniscidae Kossmann, 1881) isopods worldwide. Among bopyrids, species of Rhopalione Prez, 1921 are unusual in residing under the pleon of their pea crab hosts. Five species of Rhopalione, all reviewed in the present report, were previously known as parasites of pinnotherid crabs, themselves symbionts of bivalve mollusks from localities worldwide. Type material of R. uromyzon Prez, 1920 and R. incerta (Bonnier, 1900) was examined and redescribed. Specimens of R. atrinicolae Page, 1985 were obtained from the stomach of a gummy shark, Mustelus antarcticus Gnther, 1870, representing perhaps the first record of a bopyrid from the gut of any species of fish. Two new species of Rhopalione, R. racemus n. sp. and R. rusa n. sp., are described from pea crabs collected in South Australia and Singapore, respectively. They mostly differ in the form of the pleopods and lateral plates of females (long and slender in R. rusa n. sp. vs short and broad in R. racemus n. sp.) and midventral tubercles of males (R. rusa n. sp. with tubercles present on pleomeres 1-4 vs R. racemus n. sp. which lacks tubercles). A key for all species of Rhopalione and a discussion of the relationships between this genus and other pseudionine genera are provided. Additionally, three new records (Dactylokepon cf. hunterae Wells & Wells, 1966, Heterocepon marginatum Shiino, 1936, and Onychocepon harpax Prez, 1921) and notes on two species (H. globusus (Markham, 1992) n. comb. and O. giardi Nierstrasz & Brender Brandis, 1923) of branchial bopyrid parasites of pea crabs are included. Finally, a table of all epicaridean isopods (Bopyridae and Entoniscidae) known from pea crabs is provided with discussion of their global diversity in hopes of inspiring investigations on this understudied group. Finding a balance: Reproductive trade-offs in parasitic isopods of the family Cymothoidae

Abstract:In this study conducted along the coast of Odisha, India, reproductive trade-offs in isopods of the family Cymothoidae were investigated, focusing on the relationship between the number vs. volume of eggs and the percentage of brood to body volume. Ovigerous females from species with substantial sample sizes ( n > 30) were analyzed to understand their survival strategies. The findings highlight distinct strategies among different parasite types within Cymothoidae. Buccal parasites such as Cymothoa frontalis and Cymothoa indica , along with branchial parasites like Joryma sawayah and Agarna malayi , generally produced a higher number of smaller eggs, except for A . malayi , which produced fewer but larger eggs. In contrast, the external body surface-attaching parasite, Nerocila orbignyi , was observed to produce fewer eggs of larger size. Across all parasite types (intraspecific), there was a statistically significant negative correlation between egg number and egg volume ( p < 0.05). Buccal parasites were observed to have the highest percentage of marsupium volume relative to body volume, indicating a strategy to maximize egg storage. Conversely, external body surface-attaching parasites had the lowest percentage, possibly reflecting adaptation to a different reproductive environment. Additional observations revealed anatomical adaptations in all the studied isopod species which include the shift of the alimentary canal to the dorsal side to accommodate the development of the marsupial sac for egg incubation. In summary, these findings illustrate how parasitic isopods of the family Cymothoidae manage trade-offs between reproductive potential and success, crucial for their species' continuity and survival strategies in coastal ecosystems.

[Fertility and Embryonic Mortality Level of the Japanese Mitten Crab Eriocheir japonica (Crustacea: Decapoda: Varunidae) in Primorye]

Abstract:Reproductive biology of the Japanese mitten crab Eriocheir japonica (de Haan, 1835) was studied in the northern part of its habitat. It was revealed that E. japonica from the water bodies of Primorye, in contrast to crabs in the central part of the habitat on the Japanese Islands, lays fewer eggs in the first clutch, does not have direct dependence between the size-weight characteristics of females and the number of eggs in the third clutch, and shows higher level of embryonic mortality. The loss of eggs during the embryonic period in each of three sequentially laid clutches was 16, 34, and 52%, respectively (28% in total during the period of reproduction). Fecundity was approximately 43%. It was registered that the specifics of reproductive biology of E. japonica (monocyclicity, prolonged period of reproduction, portion spawning, indirect embryonic development, high fertility, relatively small and yolk enriched eggs, pelagic planktotrophic larva, high level of energy costs on reproduction, egg bearing on the pleopods, high level of embryonic mortality), an intermediate strategist, is in a good agreement with its life strategy, thereby enabling this species to realize its reproductive potential in the northern part of the habitat.
Host-parasite dialogue: fecundity compensation mechanisms of Fissurella crassa

Abstract:Parasites can alter the reproductive performance of their hosts, and to avoid or mitigate the resulting fitness loss, hosts may increase their current reproductive output to compensate for the future loss due to the parasitic infection. Fecundity compensation can be exploited by parasites for their own transmission (exploitation of host compensatory responses by parasites). However, this phenomenon has rarely been reported in second intermediate hosts of trematodes and its mechanisms and consequences largely unexplored. Along the east coast of the South Pacific, the second intermediate host, the mollusk Fissurella crassa , has been observed to display higher muscular foot, greater shell length and weight, and a higher gonadosomatic index when parasitized by metacercariaes of Proctoeces humboldti compared to non-parasitized hosts. In this study, we examined the histology, biochemistry (glucose, lipids, and proteins), and levels of sex hormones (estradiol and progesterone) in both parasitized and non-parasitized female individuals of F. crassa . Our findings revealed that the gonad of parasitized limpets had a higher density of oocytes, but these had a smaller individual area. Additionally, the gonadal tissue of parasitized limpets exhibited lower glucose content but higher lipid content. Notably, the levels of progesterone increased with parasite intensity. These results suggest that F. crassa possesses the ability to compensate for the negative effects of parasites by increasing the number of oocytes through biochemical and hormonal mechanisms. Our study contributes to the limited research on the impact of metacercariae on the reproduction of second intermediate hosts. Furthermore, we discuss how these changes in parasitized limpets could benefit parasite transmission.

Abstract:Objective: This study was designed to investigate the prognostic implications of the intertumoral heterogeneity of molecular phenotype in multifocal and multicentric breast cancer (MMBC). Methods: The clinical and follow-up data of 146 patients with MMBC from Jan.2009 to Dec. 2009 treated in Tumor Hospital Affiliated to Zhengzhou University were retrospectively analyzed. We used Kaplan-Meier curves to compare the survivals of patients who had tumors with molecular phenotypic heterogeneity and patients who had multifocal homogeneous tumors in molecular phenotype, and the survivals of patients who had heterogeneous tumor type and grade and who had homogeneous tumor type and grade.The corresponding hazard ratio was calculated by Cox proportional-hazards regression. Results: Intertumoral heterogeneity in histological type and grade of multiple breast cancer was detected in 16 of 146 patients (11.0%) and in 10 of 146 patients (6.8%), respectively. Interfocal heterogeneous molecular phenotype of multiple breast cancer was detected in 24 of 146 patients (16.4%). There was no significant difference in 5-year disease-free survival in multifocal cancer patients who had heterogeneous histological type and grade and who had homogeneous type and grade tumors (75.0% vs. 77.3%, P=0.808). Multifocal cancers patients who had heterogeneous tumorsin molecular phenotype compared with those with homogeneous tumors in molecular phenotype had worse 5-year disease-specific survival (78.7% vs. 58.3%, P=0.037), and had a greater risk of recurrence (HR=2.130, 95%CI=1.027-4.420; P=0.042). Phenotyping the additional cancer foci influenced the therapeutic decision in up to 16 patients(11.0%). Conclusions: Multifocal breast cancer patients who had heterogeneous tumors in molecular phenotype have a statistically significantly shorter disease-free survival. Phenotyping the additional cancer foci and managing with proper therapeutic decision may reduce the risk of recurrence or metastasis, and improve the outcomes of the patients.

Abstract:A total of 336 specimens of the goldfish Carassius auratus Linnaeus, 1758 were examined in the Baihe River, Henan Province, China, for the presence of the parasitic isopod Ichthyoxenus japonensis Richardson, 1913. Only 20 goldfish (5.95%) were infected with single and paired isopods, and seven fish were previously infected. There was no significant difference in mean body condition (as K = (EW/L-3) x 100, where EW is the eviscerated body weight and L is fork length) between infected (mean 1.450) and uninfected fish (mean 1.448; P = 0.95). The weight of gonads of the infected fish (N = 20) was calculated as zero because the gonads were too small to weigh or to identify the sex. There was also no significant difference in the GSI (gonadosomatic indices) between the infected fish (mean 2.66) and the uninfected individuals (mean 4.80; P = 0.30). The results suggest that the reproductive ability of the host was severely reduced by infection of the isopod, but that the gonads of the castrated fish could recover after the loss of the isopods.

Abstract:This is the first report of trematodes parasitic in the estuarine isopod crustacean Cyathura muromiensis, and the fourth report from anthuroid isopods worldwide. From 52 of 54 host individuals collected qualitatively on the tidal flat of the Muromi River estuary, Fukuoka, Japan, 389 cysts of metacercariae were extracted (sample prevalence = 96.3 %). Host individuals contained from one to 71 metacercarial cysts. The range in cyst diameter was 172.3-252.1 μm, and the distribution of cyst sizes contained only one component. Cysts occurred in pereonites 2-7 and the pleon of the host, but not in the head, pereonite 1, or telson. There was no correlation between the number of cysts and host sex or size. Sequences of the nuclear "ITS1 region," from the 3´ region of 18S rRNA to the 5´ region of internal transcribed spacer I gene (ITS1), from five cysts ranging in size from nearly the lowest diameter to the greatest diameter in our sample showed p-distances of 0.0-0.2 %, suggesting that all cysts obtained were conspecific. A phylogenetic reconstruction based on nuclear 28S rRNA gene sequences showed that the trematode belongs in the genus Microphallus. The definitive host of our trematode species is likely a bird, since the definitive hosts of microphallids are chiefly birds, and birds are known to prey on Cyathura isopods.

Abstract:Developmental profile of the female reproductive apparatus (the externa) of Polyascus planus parasitizing the thukuhar shore-crab Metopograpsus thukuhar is described. The development is divided into 4 stages, which are named based on the distinct color of the externa at each stage. The effects of parasitism on the gonad and hepatopancreas of the host were then examined. The ovary was heavily infiltrated by the rootlet of the parasite, with the oocytes being arrested at the pre-vitellogenic state, whereas the testis, not being infiltrated, still contained abundant amounts of spermatozoa. The hepatopancreas of the hosts of both sexes was heavily infiltrated by the rootlets. Regarding the synthesis of vitellogenin (Vg), the hemolymph precursor of the major yolk protein (vitellin, Vn), expression of host Vg gene was detected in the ovary and hepatopancreas of both non-parasitized and parasitized females, and, importantly, its expression found to be induced in the hepatopancreas of parasitized males. Furthermore, results of quantitative gene expression assays showed that expression levels of the host Vg in the ovary and hepatopancreas did not change significantly among the various parasitization status (i.e., host bearing externa of different developmental stages), nor did those of the parasite Vg in the externa among the developmental stage of the externa. The Vg expression levels in the hepatopancreas of parasitized males and in the externa were however negatively correlated. Finally, analysis of tryptic peptide fragments derived from hemolymph proteins of high molecular weight in the parasitized males confirmed the induction of synthesis of the host Vg, whereas analysis of externa proteins of similar molecular weight revealed that Vg of both host and parasite origins contributes to the formation of parasite Vn. The combined results indicate that the parasitized hosts, regardless of sex, synthesize Vg for the ovarian maturation of the parasite, to which Vg of parasite origin also contributes. Discussion is also made with regard to the strategy the parasite adopts toward hosts of different sexes. The profile of the development of externa established would serve as a temporal framework against which studies of host/parasite interaction can be conducted in a developmental context.

First report of Paragonimus skrjabini miyazakii metacercariae in Geothelphusa dehaani (Sawagani) occurring in Iwate Prefecture, Japan

Abstract:Paragonimiasis is an important food-borne zoonosis caused by Paragonimus flukes and is endemic to western Japan. However, there have been few epidemiological studies in the Tohoku district of northeastern Japan. In this study, Paragonimus metacercariae (mc) was detected in Geothelphusa dehaani (Japanese freshwater crab or Sawagani) in Iwate Prefecture. Out of the 207 Sawagani collected from 35 localities, 12 individuals from six localities were infected with Paragonimus mc. The mc were identified as P. skrjabini miyazakii based on the sequences of nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 2 and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I. This is the first report of P. s. miyazakii mc infection in Sawagani in Iwate Prefecture.
The Innate Immune Response to Infection by Polyascus gregaria in the Male Chinese Mitten Crab (Eriocheir sinensis), Revealed by Proteomic Analysis

Abstract:The Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) is a representative catadromous invertebrate of the Yangtze River and a commercial species widely cultivated in China. Both cultivated and wild crabs suffer from a variety of parasites and pathogens, which can result in catastrophic economic losses in aquaculture revenue. Polyascus gregaria, a parasitic barnacle with a highly derived morphology, is specialized in invading these crabs. This study examines the immunological mechanism in E. sinensis infected with P. gregaria. Tandem mass tags (TMT), a specialized method of mass-spectrometry, was used to analyze the infection by P. gregaria resistance at the protein level. In the hepatopancreas of infected crabs, 598 proteins differentially expressed relating to physiological change, of which, 352 were upregulated and 246 were downregulated. Based on this differential protein expression, 104 GO terms and 13 KEGG pathways were significantly enriched. Differentially expressed proteins, such as ATG, cathepsin, serpin, iron-related protein, Rab family, integrin, and lectin, are associated with the lysosome GO term and the autophagy-animal KEGG pathways, both of which likely relate to the immune response to the parasitic P. gregaria infection. These results show the benefit of taking a detailed, protein-level approach to understanding the innate immune response of aquatic invertebrates to macroparasite infection.

Abstract:Ponto-Caspian gobies became highly abundant in many regions outside their native distribution range (e.g. in the Rhine River system). In the newly invaded habitats, the parasite communities of the invasive gobies are characterized by a lower species richness compared to their native range. Interestingly, acanthocephalans of the genus Pomphorhynchus are highly abundant, although they do not become mature and mostly remain encapsulated in the abdominal cavity as preadults. Thus, gobiids could either represent a dead-end host for Pomphorhynchus sp. declining its population (dilution effect) or act as a paratenic host that could increase the infection pressure if the infected gobies are preyed upon by appropriate definitive hosts (spill back). To determine which of the 2 scenarios the gobiids contribute to, we conducted 2 infection experiments using smaller and larger individuals of the definitive host chub (Squalius cephalus), infected with preadults of Pomphorhynchus sp. collected from the abdominal cavity of Neogobius melanostomus. The results showed that preadults were able to complete their development and mature in the definitive host with mean recovery rates of 17.9% in smaller and 27.0% in larger chubs. Successful infections were observed in 62.0% and 80.0% of the smaller and larger chubs, respectively. Our study demonstrated that gobies can theoretically serve as a paratenic host for acanthocephalans of the genus Pomphorhynchus, and that infection might spill back into the local fish community if infected gobies are preyed upon by suitable definitive hosts of Pomphorhynchus sp. such as large barbel or chub.
