Abstract:Hybrid carbon/thermoplastic fibre veils for Mode‐I and Mode‐II interlaminar toughening of carbon/epoxy laminates. This study investigates the effect of fiber‐hybrid non‐woven veils on the interlaminar fracture of out‐of‐autoclave carbon/epoxy laminates. The Mode‐I and Mode‐II interlaminar toughening performance and R‐curves behavior of out‐of‐autoclave composite laminates with carbon and thermoplastic fiber‐hybrid veils are investigated. Pure carbon veil (i.e., high‐stiffness fibers), pure polyphenylene sulfide veil (i.e., low‐stiffness fibers), and three variants of fiber‐hybrid carbon/polyphenylene sulfide veil with different fiber contents (i.e., combination of low‐ and high‐ stiffness fibers) are tested and compared for Mode‐I and Mode‐II interlaminar toughening performance. All the pure and fiber‐hybrid non‐woven veils used in this study have a fixed areal density (~20 g/m2). Resin infusion combined with out‐of‐autoclave curing is utilized to manufacture the laminates. The results show that the hybridization of carbon fibers with thermoplastic fibers can address the observed shortcomings of the pure carbon veils (i.e., unstable crack growth) and of the pure thermoplastic veils (i.e., falling R‐curve) in toughening interlaminar regions. Considering both the Mode‐I and Mode‐II interlaminar fracture behavior, it is shown that fiber‐hybrid non‐woven veil toughening offers rising R‐curves, constrained crack paths (inside the veil), and enhanced interlaminar fracture energies, which are desirable for structural applications. Highlights Pure carbon/thermoplastic veils have shortcomings in interlaminar toughening. Hyrid veils constrain crack path and offer rising R‐curve. The weight ratio of hybrid veils affects crack paths and R‐curves.

Abstract:Interfacial properties were evaluated for carbon fiber (CF) with different thermosetting polymeric matrices in composites. CF tow was wet by phenolic or epoxies, and the interfacial adhesion evaluated by electrical resistance changes. The interfaces between two types of CF tows with phenolic resin and three types of epoxies were investigated. The change in electrical resistance was found to depend on the wettability of CF by the polymer resins, with the more obvious resistance changes being associated with better wettability. The electrical resistance changes were measured 20 min after the polymer resin was dropped on the CF tow. To confirm the relationship between changes in resistance and interfacial properties, both interfacial shear stress (IFSS) and interlaminar shear stress (ILSS) were also measured. The results of these mechanical measurements were generally consistent with the electrical resistance measurements in that the materials with high electrical resistance also exhibited high IFSS and ILSS.

Abstract:Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and vapor-grown carbon nanofibers (VGCNFs) were grafted with poly (styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (SMA) and poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) by free radical polymerization, and used as the secondary reinforcing agent for multiscale carbon fiber (CF) reinforced epoxy composites. The polymer-grafted VGCNFs and MWNTs were simply suspended in ethanol and spray-coated onto the surface of CF fabrics to fabricate the multiscale composites. The structures of the polymer-grafted VGCNFs/MWNTs were characterized and their effect on the mechanical properties of multiple composites was compared. Interestingly, polymer-grafted VGCNFs with much larger diameters and lower grafting ratios are more effective than polymer-grafted MWNTs for the reinforcement; and SMA-grafted VGCNFs are more effective than PGMA-grafted VGCNFs. Addition of only 0.4 wt% (on the basis of CF fabrics) of SMA-grafted VGCNFs increases interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) by similar to 73% and flexural strength by similar to 21%. The increase of ILSS exceeds those of previously reported functionalized nanotubes/nanofibers, graphene oxide or organoclay nanoplatelets as the secondary reinforcement. The high straightness and large aspect ratio of SMA-grafted VGCNFs and the strong interaction with the matrix play the key roles in the reinforcement. This new and simple method simplifies the fabrication of high-performance multiscale composites for broad applications in the future.
Interlaminar toughening in structural carbon fiber/epoxy composites interleaved with carbon nanotube veils

Abstract:<p>The susceptibility to delamination is one of the main concerns in fiber reinforced polymer composites (FRPs). This work demonstrates improvements of 60% in Mode-I fracture toughness after integration of thin (∼30 micron), continuous veils of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) directly deposited onto carbon fiber fabric as the CNT are drawn from the gas-phase using a semi-industrial process. A combination of optical imaging, scanning electron microscopy and a Raman spectroscopy provide a new rapid tool to unambiguously determine the crack propagation path by simple visual inspection of fracture surface. The results show that interlaminar crossing between CNT veil/CF interfaces is of paramount importance. The crack front alternatingly propagates above and below the CNT-toughened interlayer, significantly improving the fracture toughness of resultant laminates. This mechanism is strongly influenced by the method used to integrate the veils onto the CF. CNT veils directly deposited onto the fabrics as a low-density layer lead to large improvements in interlaminar properties, whereas compact CNT veils densified by solvent exposure prior to their integration in the lay-up act as defects.</p>
Cellulose Nanocrystal-Polyetherimide Hybrid Nanofibrous Interleaves for Enhanced Interlaminar Fracture Toughness of Carbon Fibre/epoxy Composites

Abstract:The effect of electrospun cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs)-polyetherimide (PEI) hybrid nanofibrous mats on Mode I and Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness of unidirectional carbon/epoxy composite laminates is demonstrated. It is shown that the CNCs reinforced PEI nanofibrillar interleaves result in a similar to 28% increase in Mode I initial fracture toughness values compared to neat PEI nanofibrous interleaves. Specifically, the interrelated micro- and nano-scale toughening mechanisms including carbon fibre bridging, fibre necking, fibre rupture with CNCs aggregates, and nanofibre rupture contributed to the fracture toughness improvements under Mode-I loading. Nano-scale mechanisms of shear hackles, and crack pinning by CNCs aggregates increased the Mode II fracture toughness up to similar to 3 kJ/m(2) as a result of a 6 wt% CNCs reinforced PEI nanofibrillar mat interleave. Interleaving laminated composites with electrospun CNCs-PEI hybrid nanofibrillar mats has been demonstrated as a novel and prospective strategy to strengthen and toughen interlaminar zones of carbon/epoxy composite laminates.
Lactose malabsorption in Polynesian and white children in the south west Pacific studied by breath hydrogen technique.

Abstract:Lactose malabsorption was studied by a breath hydrogen technique in 139 Samoan and 68 white schoolchildren. The Samoans were studied in four locations, two in Western Samoa and two in New Zealand, and the white children in both the Cook Islands and New Zealand. The prevalence of malabsorption varied with location: for Samoans it ranged from 41% to 60% in Western Samoa and 0% to 35% in New Zealand; white children had rates of 27% in the Cook Islands and 5% in New Zealand. Environmental factors rather than genetic factors are likely to play the main part in initiating if not perpetuating lactose malabsorption. In both races lactose malabsorption had no effect on the acceptance of, consumption of, and number of gastrointestinal symptoms caused by milk and milk biscuits. Children who had symptoms after consuming a particular dairy product were more likely to say they disliked it than those who reported no symptoms.

Abstract:We present an experimental study using surface modification of polyetherimide (PEI) and polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) nonwoven fibrous veils to probe their performance as interleaves to improve the interlaminar fracture toughness (IFT) of carbon fibre-epoxy composites. Veil fibre surfaces were modified with ozone and a post-treatment with ultraviolet (UV) light (ozone + UV). From surface characterisation, mechanical testing of composites and fractography we show that for the PEI veil, these surface modifications resulted in a decreased mode I IFT attributable to decreased fibre-epoxy adhesion and hence, fibre/matrix debonding. In contrast, an increase in sulfinyl functional groups on the surface of PPS fibres after ozonation was observed alongside an increase in PPS veil-epoxy adhesion. The strong bond between fibre–matrix resisted crack propagation across veils, compelling the crack to divert through weaker carbon fibre-epoxy interfaces in adjacent layers. The mode I fracture toughness during crack propagation G Iprop decreased, confirming the level of veil-epoxy adhesion to be a significant contributor to the IFT that can be associated with specific functional groups on fibre surfaces.

Abstract:The introduction of nanostructured interlayers is one of the most promising strategies for interlaminar reinforcement in structural composites. In this work, we study the failure mechanism and interlayer microstructure of aerospace-grade structural composites reinforced with thin veils of carbon nanotube produced using an industrialised spinning process. Samples of unidirectional carbon fibre/epoxy matrix composites interleaved with different composition CNT veils were prepared using hot press method and tested for interlaminar fracture toughness (IFT), measured in Mode-I (opening) and Mode-II (in-plane shear), and for interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), evaluated by the short beam shear (SBS) test. The crack propagation mode could be directly determined through fractography analysis by electron microscopy and resin/CNT spatial discrimination by Raman spectroscopy, showing a clear correlation between interlaminar reinforcement and the balance between cohesive/adhesive failure mode at the interlayer region. Composites with full resin infiltration of the CNT veils give a large increase of Mode II IFT (88%) to 1500 J/m2 and a slight enhancement of apparent interlaminar shear strength (6.5%), but a decrease of Mode I IFT (-21%). The results help establish the role of interlayer infiltration, interlaminar crossings and formation of a carbon fibre bridgings, for interlaminar reinforcement with interleaves.

Abstract:Toughening of nanofiber membrane intercalated composite. The effect of membrane thickness of electrospinning polyethersulfone (PES) nanofiber membranes on interlayer toughness and impact resistance of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin (CF/EP) composites are researched. Intercalation composites with different nanofiber membrane thicknesses, ranging from 10 to 50 μm, are tested at mode I and mode II interlaminar fracture toughness. The impact resistance of nanofiber membranes with different thicknesses is evaluated by the compression after impact (CAI) strength test. Moreover, nanofiber toughening contributions are investigated using the crack path and surface analysis. Results indicate that PES nanofibers increase the toughness of interlayer resin and change the interlaminar crack propagation path of CF/EP composites. The optimum nanofiber membrane thickness for mode I (GI = + 58%) and CAI (CAI strength = + 33%) is 50 μm, while for mode II is 30 μm (GII = + 16.4%). The storage modulus of CF/EP composites increases with the increase of nanofiber membrane thickness. The study also confirms the insertion of a nanofiber membrane slightly improves the tensile strength and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the CF/EP composites. Highlights PES nanofiber membranes of different thicknesses were inserted into the CF/EP. CAI and GI improved by 33% and 58%, respectively of CF/EP composites. The relationship between interlayer fracture toughness and CAI was discussed.

Abstract:Schematic view of the study. In this work, the behavior of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites (CFRPs) interleaved with electrospun veils under low velocity impact (LVI) conditions and extreme environmental temperatures was investigated. 2/2 twill carbon fiber/epoxy laminates were subjected to LVI at three energy levels (10, 20, and 30 J), and three temperatures (−50°C, room temperature, and 100°C). Two interleaved configurations were explored (six veils placed symmetrically with respect to the middle plane of the laminate and with respect to the external layers of the laminate). Particularly at room temperature and up to 20 J, nanofibrous interlayers effectively reduced localized deformation (by about 13.0%) and delamination (by about 12.2%) when positioned in the outer ply interleaved configuration compared to the reference laminate. At 100°C, this effect is maintained at 10 J, preventing an increase in the delaminated area. At −50°C and 10 J, the promotion of delamination prevented back surface fiber failure. Regarding post‐impact flexural properties, the presence of nanoveils ensured superior mechanical properties compared to the corresponding reference laminate impacted at the same conditions, demonstrating their efficacy in enhancing the damage tolerance of the overall laminate. Highlights Electrospun veils were interleaved in 20 layers of 2/2 twill carbon/epoxy laminate. Three configurations were tested under LVI at 10 J, 20 J, 30 J, and −50°C, RT, and 100°C. Observed damage modes include delamination, indentation, and back surface fiber cracks. Veils symmetrically placed in external layers limit delamination at 20 J (RT) and 10 J (100°C). Electrospun veils enhanced CFRP bending and residual post‐impact properties at RT and 100°C.

Abstract:Journal of Composite Materials, Ahead of Print. Two toughening approaches were investigated in this study to improve the interlaminar fracture toughness (ILFTs) of carbon fiber/benzoxazine composites. A matrix modification as well as an incorporation of thermoplastic polyamide (PA) veils were utilized to investigate the change in the ILFT properties. Two PA veils with different melting temperatures were analyzed and the ILFT properties of the resultant laminates were determined by the Mode-I and Mode-II critical strain energy release rates (GIC and GIIC). The incorporation of both veils was found to increase both GIC and GIIC performances. The veil with a lower melting temperature than the curing temperature of the resin resisted a Mode-I crack propagation better than the veil with a high-melting temperature. A significant increase in the GIC measurements could therefore be achieved with the use of the toughened matrix system. In the Mode-II ILFT testing, the high-melting temperature veil outperformed the low-melting temperature veil in resisting both crack initiation and propagation. No significant toughening improvement was observed with the use of a toughened matrix system in the Mode-II experiment. A combination between matrix toughening and interleaving with the high-melting temperature veil led to an enhancement in Mode-II properties. The fracture surfaces of the tested specimens were then examined for a determination of toughening effects of the interleaved veils on the composites.

Abstract:The addition of polyamide veil (PAV) to the interlaminar area of carbon fiber (CF) fabric/epoxy composites can effectively increase their toughness with high accuracy. Vacuum-assisted resin infusion (VARI) was used to fabricate composite structures. VARI was applied to obtain a PAV, which is an interleaf between fabric piles of CFs. The thermoplastic PAV was dissolved in epoxy when the PAV was cured at high temperature. A phase-separated morphology with a PAV-rich secondary phase was formed during the curing process. Experimental results indicated that compression after impact (CAI), which is the average value of CAI, increased by threefold when two layers of PAV were added. The thermal and mechanical characteristics of the composite were analyzed and compared at room temperature and high-temperature wet conditions.

Abstract:<p>A major problem with carbon fiber/epoxy (CF/EP) composites is their weakness to resist interlaminar delamination originating from the brittle epoxy matrix. Interleaving has been long studied as a solution. In this work, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were uniformly decorated on electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers by ultra-sonication to form flexible interleaves for CF/EP laminates. Upon epoxy curing, PCL nanofibers were phase separated from epoxy, and CNTs could be uniformly distributed within the matrix. Results obtained showed that modes I and II interlaminar fracture energies of CF/EP laminates interleaved with CNT-decorated PCL nanofibers were enhanced by 68% and 44%, respectively. Synchronous improvement of 7.5% on the interlaminar shear strength of CF/EP laminates were also achieved. Moreover, the glass transition temperature of the interleaved laminates was maintained as that of epoxy because of the introduction of the CNTs.</p>

Abstract:Short carbon fiber (SCF) interlaminar toughened carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin (CF/EP) composite laminates were prepared by hot press process, the compiled UD prepreg was placed between two metal plates and then put into the hot press machine. Laminates were cut to specific sizes for end notched three‐point flexural (ENF), and the values of the peak load and GIIC are studied. The peak load and GIIC have the same trend, both increasing and then decreasing with increasing fiber content, with a maximum value at 10 g/m2 of short fiber content. To investigate the toughening mechanism of SCF interlaminar toughened CF/EP composites, we used SEM to observe the interlaminar fracture surfaces of the composites and analyzed the mechanism of short fiber interlaminar toughening. In this paper, short carbon fiber (SCF) interlaminar toughened carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin (CF/EP) composite laminates were prepared. The effect of SCF content on the mode II interlaminar fracture toughness (GIIC) and flexural properties of CF/EP composites was investigated. It was shown that the addition of SCF between the plies had an effect on the GIIC of the composites. When the SCF content was 10 g/m2, the GIIC increased from 1506.62 J/m2 to 1995.6 J/m2, which improved by about 32.46%. When the content of SCF was 5 g/m2, the flexural strength and flexural modulus increased by 36.92% and 98.48%, respectively, showing the best performance. The toughening mechanism of SCF was observed by SEM images as SCF debonding and pulling out from the resin and SCF fracture. The present study was also compared with our previous study on short aramid fiber interlaminar toughened CF/EP composites, and the test data and SEM images of the two experiments were compared to analyze the effect of different short fibers on the interlaminar toughening effect, which provides some reference for the selection of interlaminar toughening materials.

Abstract:Preparation of CF/EP composites containing Co‐PA veil and their influence on the mechanical properties. Thermoplastic veil interlayers offer a promising approach to improve interlaminar reinforcement in composite materials. This study investigates co‐polyamide (Co‐PA) interleaved veils, fabricated through the hot melt adhesive (HMA) technique. These veils are then applied with varying areal weight densities as interleaves to simultaneously toughen and strengthen carbon fiber/epoxy (CF/EP) composites, utilizing the vacuum‐assisted resin infusion (VARI) method. Integrating Co‐PA veils with a low melting point in the interlaminar of CF/EP composites improves compatibility and promotes strong adhesion between thermoplastics and epoxy resins. As result, The Co‐PA laminates exhibited significant improvements compared with the untoughened composites, with a maximum enhancement of 148.1% and 67.8% for Mode‐I (GIC) and Mode‐II (GIIC), respectively. Moreover, ILSS, tensile strength, and flexural strength improvements were also 20.9%, 34.9%, and 14.5%, respectively. The fracture surface analysis via scanning electron microscopy directly revealed the crack propagation on the fracture surfaces of Mode‐I and Mode‐II specimens. This analysis revealed that Co‐PA demonstrated excellent compatibility with epoxy resin, melts during the stage of epoxy curing, and undergoes phase separation in the later stage, resulting in the formation of "bead‐like" structures within the fibrous network. Remarkably, this structure significantly enhanced the toughness of the CF/EP composites. The Co‐PA veils can improve the interlaminar toughness of CF/EP composites due to their compatibility with the epoxy matrix and high inherent toughness and strength. This method is straightforward to manage and can be utilized for manufacturing large‐scale composite materials incorporating CF fabrics, demonstrating promise for industrial applications. Highlights With its low melting point, co‐polyamide helps prevent structural failure or excessive damage and is proposed to be utilized in composites to enhance the interlaminar fracture toughness properties. The effects of Co‐PA veils of different areal densities on the mechanical characteristics of interlaminar composites were examined. Co‐polyamide particles with fiber‐carbon laminates offer superior fatigue properties and an optimum carbon fiber‐bridging mechanism. Co‐polyamide veils with CF/EP laminates are feasible for structural use in high‐tech automotive applications.

Abstract:The interface of hybrid carbon/E-glass fibres composite is interlayered with Xantu.layr® polyamide 6,6 nanofibre veil to localise cracking to promote a gradual failure. The pseudo-ductile response of these novel stacking sequences examined under quasi-static three-point bending show a change to the failure mechanism. The change in failure mechanism due to the interfacial toughening is examined via SEM micrographs. The incorporation of veil toughening led to a change in the dominant failure mechanism, resulting in fibre yielding by localised kinking and reduced instances of buckling failure. In alternated carbon and glass fibre samples with glass fibre undertaking compression, a pseudo-ductile response with veil interlayering was observed. The localisation of the fibre failure, due to the inclusion of the veil, resulted in kink band formations which were found to be predictable in previous micro buckling models. The localisation of failure by the veil interlayer resulted in a pseudo-ductile response increasing the strain before failure by 24% compared with control samples.

Abstract:This study explores the toughening of fiber-reinforced composite laminates to prevent against mode 1 delamination by using a selective placement of nanosilica particles in only the out-of-tow interlaminar regions of the laminate. In place of a conventional homogenous particle distribution throughout the laminate, “selective toughening” through controlled particle deposition is examined with the objective to increase the nanosilica toughening efficiency. Using a laboratory-scale manufacturing route conceptually similar to a combined prepreg and resin-film process, uni-directional carbon fiber composite laminates containing high glass-transition temperature amine-cured Dow D.E.R. 330 epoxy are produced from both particle distribution configurations. Comparisons are made by double cantilever beam testing for mode 1 delamination fracture energy G 1C and by examination of the fracture surfaces. The results show that further nanosilica toughening efficiency is possible with local deposition and toughening compared to the conventional homogenous particle distribution throughout the laminate. For the same total nanosilica particle content in the laminate, the delamination toughening effects are maintained or improved when locally toughened in only the out-of-tow interlaminar regions. For mode 1 delamination initiation and propagation, fracture energy increases in the range of 60% over the untoughened laminates are found for the laminates with a local particle distribution. By comparison, those laminates with a conventional homogeneous particle distribution saw increase of 20–35% over the untoughened laminates. The implications of the localized toughening approach are discussed to provide further guidance in optimizing the use of nanosilica particles and particle toughening in general in composite laminates.

Abstract:In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are functionalized through diazonium salt reaction to introduce polar groups onto their surfaces. These functionalized CNTs (FCNTs) are added into PPO solutions at different loadings (0 wt%, 0.5 wt%, 1 wt%, 1.5 wt%) and used for electrospinning. The results show that the addition of FCNTs facilitate the production of PPO veils having small fiber diameters. The veils are used as interleaves in CF/EP composite laminates. The Mode I and Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness tests reveal that PPO veils containing 0.5 wt% FCNTs exhibit the optimal toughening. GICini and GIIC have an improvement of approximately 120% and 180% over the untoughened samples, respectively, which is 15% and 26% higher than that of PPO veils containing no CNTs, respectively. The toughening mechanism is also analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Abstract:Journal of Composite Materials, Ahead of Print. Carbon fiber-reinforced composites have become increasingly favored in the aerospace and automotive sectors for their remarkable performance attributes. Nonetheless, their broader adoption is hindered by the concern of delamination. To address this limitation, our study delved into the influence of incorporating a thermoplastic toughening agent on the interlaminar fracture toughness (ILFT) of woven carbon fiber composites. Our investigation focused on the impact of diverse curing pressures on these composites, analyzing configurations both with and without an integrated non-woven polyamide (PA) veil. The PA veil was meticulously positioned within the central layer of a composite, combining benzoxazine and carbon fiber constituents. Our primary objective entailed optimizing curing conditions to enhance ILFT across both Mode-I and Mode-II fracture modes. Our findings unveiled that elevating curing pressure had a limited effect on ILFT in non-interleaved composites while interleaved samples exhibited substantial ILFT reductions under heightened curing pressure. Raising pressure from 1 atm to 3.5 atm caused approximately a 27% drop in the Mode-I strain energy release rate (GIC) value, and this reduction deepened to 42% at 7 atm. This highlighted the inverse relationship between increased curing pressure and GIC values in interleaved specimens, while non-interleaved counterparts experienced less pronounced changes. A parallel trend manifested in Mode-II ILFT, where escalated curing pressure correlated with diminished Mode-II strain energy release rate (GIIC) values. Interleaved samples suffered a notably more significant decline, attributed to resin content reduction caused by heightened pressure. This, in turn, compromised the bond between the PA veil and the matrix, facilitating the propagation of cracks within the composite. This ultimately culminated in significantly reduced GIC and GIIC values. Our study contributes valuable insights into optimizing the interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fiber composites, shedding light on the complex interplay of curing conditions and material configurations.

Abstract:The study explores the impact of Carbon and Glass nonwoven interleaving veils with varying areal density on delamination resistance in unidirectional (UD) Glass epoxy composites under Opening (Mode-I) and Shearing (Mode-II) mode loadings. Commercially available non-woven Carbon and Glass interleaves with areal densities of 15, 20, 25, and 30 g/m 2 were used to manufacture the interleaved Glass epoxy laminates. Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) and End Notch Flexural (ENF) specimens were used to determine the mode-I and mode-II fracture energies. The results reveal that, during mode-I initiation, interleaved laminates exhibit a lower interlaminar fracture toughness (IFT) except for the Carbon fiber interleaved laminates of areal density 30 g/m 2 . However, during propagation, all veils interleaved laminates presented significant improvement in IFT ranging from 5 to 25% accompanied by substantial fiber bridging. In case of mode-II test, the laminates with Carbon and Glass veils exhibit enhanced IFT (60-182%) with increasing areal density compared with the non-interleaved Glass laminates. Optical and scanning electron micrographs (SEM) provide evidence of fracture mechanisms involved in the interleaved and non-interleaved composite laminates.
