Abstract:Readout of a large, spacecraft-based array of superconducting transition-edge sensors (TESs) requires careful management of the layout area and power dissipation of the cryogenic-circuit components. We present three optimizations of our time- (TDM) and code-division-multiplexing (CDM) systems for the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU), a several-thousand-pixel-TES array for the planned Athena-satellite mission. The first optimization is a new readout scheme that is a hybrid of CDM and TDM. This C/TDM architecture balances CDM's noise advantage with TDM's layout compactness. The second is a redesign of a component: the shunt resistor that provides a dc-voltage bias to the TESs. A new layout and a thicker Pd-Au resistive layer combine to reduce this resistor's area by more than a factor of 5. Third, we have studied the power dissipated by the first-stage SQUIDs (superconducting quantum-interference devices) and the readout noise versus the critical current of the first-stage SqUIDs. As a result, the X-IFU TDM and C/TDM SQUIDs will have a specified junction critical current of 5 μA. Based on these design optimizations and TDM experiments described by Durkin, et al. (these proceedings), TDM meets all requirements to be X-IFU's backup-readout option. Hybrid C/TDM is another viable option that could save spacecraft resources.

Abstract:We are developing the frequency domain multiplexing (FDM) read-out of transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeters for the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) instrument on board of the future European X-Ray observatory Athena. The X-IFU instrument consists of an array of $\sim$3840 TESs with a high quantum efficiency ($>$90 \%) and spectral resolution $\Delta E$=2.5 eV $@$ 7 keV ($E/\Delta E\sim$2800). FDM is currently the baseline readout system for the X-IFU instrument. Using high quality factor LC filters and room temperature electronics developed at SRON and low-noise two stage SQUID amplifiers provided by VTT, we have recently demonstrated good performance with the FDM readout of Mo/Au TES calorimeters with Au/Bi absorbers. An integrated noise equivalent power resolution of about 2.0 eV at 1.7 MHz has been demonstrated with a pixel from a new TES array from NASA/Goddard (GSFC-A2). We have achieved X-ray energy resolutions $\sim$2.5 eV at AC bias frequency at 1.7 MHz in the single pixel read-out. We have also demonstrated for the first time an X-ray energy resolution around 3.0 eV in a 6 pixel FDM read-out with TES array (GSFC-A1). In this paper we report on the single pixel performance of these microcalorimeters under MHz AC bias, and further results of the performance of these pixels under FDM.

Abstract:Frequency domain multiplexing (FDM) is the baseline readout system for the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) on board the Athena mission. Under the FDM scheme, TESs are coupled to a passive LC filter and biased with alternating current (AC bias) at MHz frequencies. Using high-quality factor LC filters and room temperature electronics developed at SRON and low-noise two-stage SQUID amplifiers provided by VTT, we have recently demonstrated good performance with the FDM readout of Mo/Au TES calorimeters with Au/Bi absorbers. We have achieved a performance requested for the demonstration model (DM) with the single pixel AC bias ($\Delta E=$1.8 eV) and 9 pixel multiplexing ($\Delta E=$2.6 eV) modes. We have also demonstrated 14-pixel multiplexing with an average energy resolution of 3.3 eV, which is limited by non-fundamental issues related to FDM readout in our lab setup.

Abstract:We report our most recent progress and demonstration of a frequency domain multiplexing (FDM) readout technology for transition-edge sensor (TES) arrays, both of which we have been developing, in the framework of the X-IFU instrument on board the future Athena X-ray telescope. Using Ti/Au TES micro-calorimeters, high-Q LC filters and analog/digital electronics developed at SRON and low-noise two-stage SQUID amplifiers from VTT Finland, we demonstrated feasibility of our FDM readout technology, with the simultaneous readout of 37 pixels with an energy resolution at of 2.23 eV at an energy of 6 keV. We finally outline our plans for further scaling up and improving our technology.

Abstract:The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) is an instrument of ESA's future NewAthena space observatory, with the goal to provide high-energy resolution ($<$ 4 eV at X-ray energies up to 7 keV) and high-spatial resolution (9") spectroscopic imaging over the X-ray energy range from 200 eV to 12 keV, by means of an array of about 1500 transition-edge sensors (TES) read out via SQUID time-division multiplexing (TDM). In 2022, to aid in the transfer of TDM readout technology from the laboratory toward flight hardware, our team commissioned a new TDM-based laboratory test-bed at SRON. This setup hosts an array of $75\times 75\ \mu$m$^2$ TESs that are read out via 2-column $\times$ 32-row TDM. A system component that is critical to high-performance operation is the wiring harness that connects the room-temperature electronics to the cryogenic readout componentry. In November 2023, we implemented a re-designed flex harness, which in the SRON test-bed has a length close to what is envisioned for the X-IFU flight harness. We report here on our characterization of the TDM system with the new flex harness, which allowed the system to achieve a co-added energy resolution at a level of 2.7~eV FWHM at 6~keV via 32-row readout. In addition, we provide an outlook on the upcoming integration of TDM readout into the X-IFU Focal-Plane Assembly Development Model.

Abstract:We are developing X-ray microcalorimeters as a backup option for the baseline detectors in the X-IFU instrument on board the ATHENA space mission led by ESA and to be launched in the early 2030s.5$\times$5 mixed arrays with TiAu transition-edge sensor (TES), which have different high aspect ratios and thus high resistances, have been designed and fabricated to meet the energy resolution requirement of the X-IFU instrument. Such arrays can also be used to optimise the performance of the Frequency Domain Multiplexing (FDM) readout and lead to the final steps for the fabrication of a large detector array. In this work we present the experimental results from tens of the devices with an aspect ratio (length-to-width) ranging from 1-to-1 up to 6-to-1, measured in a single-pixel mode with a FDM readout system developed at SRON/VTT. We observed a nominal energy resolution of about 2.5 eV at 5.9 keV at bias frequencies ranging from 1 to 5 MHz. These detectors are proving to be the best TES microcalorimeters ever reported in Europe, being able to meet not only the requirements of the X-IFU instrument, but also those of other future challenging X-ray space missions, fundamental physics experiments, plasma characterization and material analysis.

Abstract:At SRON, we have been developing X-ray TES micro-calorimeters as backup technology for the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) of the Athena mission, demonstrating excellent resolving powers both under DC and AC bias. We also developed a frequency-domain multiplexing (FDM) readout technology, where each TES is coupled to a superconducting band-pass LC resonator and AC biased at MHz frequencies through a common readout line. The TES signals are summed at the input of a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), which performs a first amplification at cryogenic stage. Custom analog front-end electronics and digital boards take care of further amplifying the signals at room temperature and of the modulation/demodulation of the TES signals and bias carrier, respectively. We report on the most recent developments on our FDM technology, which involves a two-channel demonstration with a total of 70 pixels with a summed energy resolution of 2.34 ± 0.02 eV at 5.9 keV without spectral performance degradation with respect to single-channel operation. Moreover, we discuss prospects towards the scaling-up to a larger multiplexing factor up to 78 pixels per channel in a 1–6 MHz readout bandwidth.

Abstract:The Advanced Telescope for High-Energy Astrophysics (Athena) has been selected by ESA as its second large-class mission. The future European X-ray observatory will study the hot and energetic Universe with its launch foreseen in 2028. Microcalorimeters based on superconducting Transition-edge sensor (TES) are the chosen technology for the detectors array of the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) on board of Athena. The X-IFU is a 2-D imaging integral-field spectrometer operating in the soft X-ray band (0.3 -12 keV). The detector consists of an array of 3840 TESs coupled to X-ray absorbers and read out in the MHz bandwidth using Frequency Domain Multiplexing (FDM) based on Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs). The proposed design calls for devices with a high filling-factor, high quantum efficiency, relatively high count-rate capability and an energy resolution of 2.5 eV at 5.9 keV. The paper will review the basic principle and the physics of the TES-based microcalorimeters and present the state-of-the art of the FDM read-out.

Abstract:Athena is a space-based X-ray observatory intended for exploration of the hot and energetic universe. One of the science instruments on Athena will be the X-ray Integrated Field Unit (X-IFU), which is a cryogenic X-ray spectrometer, based on a large cryogenic imaging array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES) based microcalorimeters operating at a temperature of 100mK. The imaging array consists of 3800 pixels providing 2.5 eV spectral resolution, and covers a field of view with a diameter of of 5 arc minutes. Multiplexed readout of the cryogenic microcalorimeter array is essential to comply with the cooling power and complexity constraints on a space craft. Frequency domain multiplexing has been under development for the readout of TES-based detectors for this purpose, not only for the X-IFU detector arrays but also for TES-based bolometer arrays for the Safari instrument of the Japanese SPICA observatory. This paper discusses the design considerations which are applicable to optimise the multiplex factor within the boundary conditions as set by the space craft. More specifically, the interplay between the science requirements such as pixel dynamic range, pixel speed, and cross talk, and the space craft requirements such as the power dissipation budget, available bandwidth, and electromagnetic compatibility will be discussed.

Abstract:The X-IFU is the cryogenic spectrometer onboard the future ATHENA X-ray observatory. It is based on a large array of TES microcalorimeters, which work in combination with a Cryogenic AntiCoincidence detector (CryoAC). This is necessary to reduce the particle background level thus enabling part of the mission science goals. Here we present the first joint test of X-IFU TES array and CryoAC Demonstration Models, performed in a FDM setup. We show that it is possible to operate properly both detectors, and we provide a preliminary demonstration of the anti-coincidence capability of the system achieved by the simultaneous detection of cosmic muons.

Abstract:The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) instrument on the future ESA mission Athena X-ray Observatory is a cryogenic micro-calorimeter array of Transition Edge Sensor (TES) detectors designed to provide spatially-resolved high-resolution spectroscopy. The onboard reconstruction software provides energy, spatial location and arrival time of incoming X-ray photons hitting the detector. A new processing algorithm based on a truncation of the classical optimal filter and called 0-padding , has been recently proposed aiming to reduce the computational cost without compromising energy resolution. Initial tests with simple synthetic data displayed promising results. This study explores the slightly better performance of the 0-padding filter and assess its final application to real data. The goal is to examine the larger sensitivity to instrumental conditions that was previously observed during the analysis of the simulations. This 0-padding technique is thoroughly tested using more realistic simulations and real data acquired from NASA and NIST laboratories employing X-IFU-like TES detectors. Different fitting methods are applied to the data, and a comparative analysis is performed to assess the energy resolution values obtained from these fittings. The 0-padding filter achieves energy resolutions as good as those obtained with standard filters, even with those of larger lengths, across different line complexes and instrumental conditions. This method proves to be useful for energy reconstruction of X-ray photons detected by the TES detectors provided proper corrections for baseline drift and jitter effects are applied. The finding is highly promising especially for onboard processing, offering efficiency in computational resources and facilitating the analysis of sources with higher count rates at high resolution.

Development of Multilayer Readout Wiring TES Calorimeter for Future X-ray Missions

Abstract:We have fabricated multilayer readout wiring Transition Edge Sensors (TES), which enable us to realize both large effective area and high-energy resolution for future X-ray astrophysical missions, such as DIOS. By sandwiching a SiO2 insulation layer between Al superconducting signal and return lines, self/mutual inductances and self fielding of bias leads are expected to be reduced. We fabricated 4x4 and 20x20 TES array on the multilayer wiring and tested their performance. Under the low temperature condition, several pixels in the TES array showed sharp superconducting transitions at around ~300 mK. We also succeeded in detecting X-ray signals from the 4x4 TES, contrary to the previous results of 20x20 TES. We further investigated the reasons for the differences between the 4x4 TES and the 20x20 TES, and present future plans for improving the multilayer TES array fabrication.

Abstract:At Argonne National Laboratory, we are developing hard X-ray (2 to 20 keV) Transition Edge Sensor (TES) arrays for beamline science. The significantly improved energy resolution provided by superconducting detectors compared to semiconductor-based energy-dispersive detectors, but with better collection efficiency than wavelength-dispersive instruments, will enable greatly improved X-ray emission and absorption spectroscopic measurements. A prototype instrument with 24 microwave-frequency multiplexed pixels is now in testing at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) 1-BM beamline. Initial measurements show an energy resolution ten times better (150 eV compared to < 15 eV) than the silicon-drift detectors currently available to APS beamline users, and in particular demonstrate the ability to resolve closely-spaced emission lines in samples containing multiple transition metal elements, such as integrated circuits. Comparing fluorescence spectra of integrated circuits measured with our TESs at the beamline to those measured with silicon detectors, we find emission lines and elements largely hidden (e.g. Hf alongside Cu) from a semiconductor-based detector but well resolved by a TES. This directly shows the strengths of TES-based instruments in fluorescence mapping.

Abstract:In the framework of the ESA Athena mission, the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) instrument to be on board the X-ray Athena Observatory is a cryogenic micro-calorimeter array of Transition Edge Sensor (TES) detectors aimed at providing spatially resolved high-resolution spectroscopy. As a part of the on-board Event Processor (EP), the reconstruction software will provide the energy, spatial location and arrival time of the incoming X-ray photons hitting the detector and inducing current pulses on it. Being the standard optimal filtering technique the chosen baseline reconstruction algorithm, different modifications have been analyzed to process pulses shorter than those considered of high resolution (those where the full length is not available due to a close pulse after them) in order to select the best option based on energy resolution and computing performance results. It can be concluded that the best approach to optimize the energy resolution for short filters is the 0-padding filtering technique, benefiting also from a reduction in the computational resources. However, its high sensitivity to offset fluctuations currently prevents its use as the baseline treatment for the X-IFU application for lack of consolidated information on the actual stability it will get in flight.

Abstract:The focal plane of Athena's WFI consists of spectroscopic single photon X-ray detectors that contain arrays of DEPFETs (DEpleted P-channel Field-Effect Transistor) as well as ASICs that are used for steering, readout and analog signal shaping. These components have to be examined regarding the effect of ionizing radiation. A Total Ionizing Dose (TID) test was done with prototype detector modules with 64x64 DEPFETs and one SWITCHER and VERITAS ASIC each. The current design of the WFI detector head features a proton shield equivalent to 4 cm of aluminum in order to prevent a strong increase of leakage current in the fully depleted 450 $\mu$m thick bulk of the sensor. This keeps the expected doses and dose rates during the nominal mission relatively low ($\sim$5 Gy). It is nevertheless important to study the current system in a dedicated TID test in order to exclude unforeseen effects and to study any radiation related changes that can have an effect on the very sensitive readout chain and the detector performance. The combination of low doses, low dose rates, low operating temperature (<-60°C) but high sensitivity on small changes of the threshold voltages represent somehow unusual boundary conditions in comparison to TID tests for standard radiation hard electronic components. Under these circumstances it was found beneficial to do the test in our own laboratory with an X-ray source in order to realize irradiation during nominal operation conditions. Furthermore, it facilitated to take annealing effects into account. Reasonably accurate dosimetry is achieved by measuring the X-ray spectrum and intensity with the device under test. After irradiation to a total dose of 14 Gy and subsequent annealing the threshold voltage of the DEPFETs were shifted by a mean value of 80 mV, the performance remained unchanged apart from a slight increase in readout noise by 10%.

Abstract:Spectroscopy focusing array (SFA) and polarimetry focusing array (PFA) are the two major payloads of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission (eXTP). Nested Wolter-I X-ray mirror module is implemented in SFA and PFA to achieve a high effective area. When evaluating the properties of the mirror module, the alignment of the optical axis of the X-ray mirror module and a quasi-parallel X-ray beam is a prerequisite for ensuring accuracy of the results. To assist the alignment of the X-ray mirror module, an X-ray focal plane detector with one of the largest detection areas, is designed based on a back-illuminated scientific complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor transistor (sCMOS) sensor(GSENSE6060BSI; Gpixel Inc). Then the characteristics of readout noise, dark current, and split-pixel event properties of the detector are studied with the self-developed multi-target fluorescence X-ray source in a 100-m long X-ray test facility. The energy calibration is performed based on the single-pixel event, and the energy non-linearity of the detector is also observed. Finally, based on the optical model, the eXTP mirror module is simulated, and the alignment test of the Wolter-I X-ray mirror module designed for Einstein Probe/Follow-up X-ray Telescope via the “Burkert test” method is demonstrated.
