Abstract:The notion of ball convexity, considered in finite dimensional real Banach spaces, is a natural and useful extension of usual convexity; one replaces intersections of half-spaces by suitable intersections of balls. A subset $S$ of a normed space is called ball convex if it coincides with its ball hull, which is obtained as intersection of all balls (of fixed radius) containing $S$. Ball convex sets are closely related to notions like ball polytopes, complete sets, bodies of constant width, and spindle convexity. We will study geometric properties of ball convex bodies in normed spaces, for example deriving separation theorems, characterizations of strictly convex norms, and an application to complete sets. Our main results refer to minimal representations of ball convex bodies in terms of their ball exposed faces, to representations of ball hulls of sets via unions of ball hulls of finite subsets, and to ball convexity of increasing unions of ball convex bodies.

On punctured locally compact spaces

Abstract:In a recent paper \cite{T} the fact that a class of locally compact metric spaces $X$, among which are Euclidean spaces, are not homemorphic to their punctured version $X\men\{p\}$, was given an interesting new proof which does not use algebraic topology; essential tools of this proof are a boundedly compact metric structure, and path--connectedness near infinity. Here we show that local compactness and ordinary connectedness near infinity suffice; no metrizability is needed, and moreover we can also delete whole compact subsets, not only single points. Some non--homeomorphism results on many--holed Euclidean balls are also obtained. This note ought to distil the essence of the method developed in \cite{T}.

Abstract:In this paper we prove the following pointwise and curvature-free estimates on convexity radius, injectivity radius and local behavior of geodesics in a complete Riemannian manifold $M$: 1) the convexity radius of $p$, $\operatorname{conv}(p)\ge \min\{\frac{1}{2}\operatorname{inj}(p),\operatorname{foc}(B_{\operatorname{inj}(p)}(p))\}$, where $\operatorname{inj}(p)$ is the injectivity radius of $p$ and $\operatorname{foc}(B_r(p))$ is the focal radius of open ball centered at $p$ with radius $r$; 2) for any two points $p,q$ in $M$, $\operatorname{inj}(q)\ge \min\{\operatorname{inj}(p), \operatorname{conj}(q)\}-d(p,q),$ where $\operatorname{conj}(q)$ is the conjugate radius of $q$; 3) for any $0<r<\min\{\operatorname{inj}(p),\frac{1}{2}\operatorname{conj}(B_{\operatorname{inj}(p)}(p))\}$, any (not necessarily minimizing) geodesic in $B_r(p)$ has length $\le 2r$. We also clarify two different concepts on convexity radius and give examples to illustrate that the one more frequently used in literature is not continuous.

Abstract:We show that the local Burkholder functional $\mathcal B_K$ is quasiconvex. In the limit of $p$ going to 2 we find a class of non-polyconvex functionals which are quasiconvex on the set of matrices with positive determinant. In order to prove the validity of lower semicontinuity arguments in this setting, we show that the Burkholder functionals satisfy a sharp extension of the classical function theoretic area formula. As a corollary, in addition to functionals in geometric function theory, one finds new classes of non-polyconvex functionals, degenerating as the determinant vanishes, for which there is existence of minimizers.

Abstract:Let A be a nonempty closed subset (resp. nonempty bounded closed subset) of a metric space (X,d) and x∈X∖A. The nearest point problem (resp. the farthest point problem) w.r.t. x considered here is to find a point a0∈A such that d(x,a0)=inf{d(x,a):a∈A} (resp. d(x,a0)=sup{d(x,a):a∈A}). We study the well posedness of nearest point problems and farthest point problems in geodesic spaces. We show that if X is a space of curvature bounded below then the complement of the set of all points x∈X for which the nearest point problem (resp. the farthest point problem) w.r.t. x is well posed is σ-porous in X∖A. Our results extend and/or improve some recent results about proximinality in geodesic spaces as well as the corresponding ones previously obtained in uniformly convex Banach spaces. In particular, the result regarding the nearest point problem answers affirmatively an open problem proposed by Kaewcharoen and Kirk [A. Kaewcharoen, W.A. Kirk, Proximinality in geodesic spaces, Abstr. Appl. Anal. 2006 (2006) 1–10].
Local Completeness of Locally Pseudoconvex Spaces and Borwein–Preiss Variational Principle

Abstract:The notion of local completeness is extended to locally pseudoconvex spaces. Then a general version of the Borwein-Preiss variational principle in locally complete locally pseudoconvex spaces is given, where the perturbation is an infinite sum involving differentiable real-valued functions and subadditive functionals. From this, some particular versions of the Borwein-Preiss variational principle are derived. In particular, a version with respect to the Minkowski gauge of a bounded closed convex set in a locally convex space is presented. In locally convex spaces it can be shown that the relevant perturbation only consists of a single summand if and only if the bounded closed convex set has the quasi-weak drop property if and only if it is weakly compact. From this, a new description of reflexive locally convex spaces is obtained.

This paper is concerned with the stability of the ball for a class of isoperimetric problems under a convexity constraint. Considering the problem of minimizing [math] among convex subsets of [math] of fixed volume, where [math] is the perimeter functional, [math] is a perturbative term, and [math] is a small parameter, the stability of the ball for this perturbed isoperimetric problem means that the ball is the unique (local, up to translation) minimizer for any [math] sufficiently small. We investigate independently two specific cases where [math] is an energy arising from PDE theory, namely, the capacity and the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of a domain [math]. While in both cases stability fails among all shapes, in the first case we prove the (nonsharp) stability of the ball among convex shapes, by building an appropriate competitor for the capacity of a perturbation of the ball. In the second case we prove the sharp stability of the ball among convex shapes by providing the optimal range of [math] such that stability holds, relying on the selection principle technique and a regularity theory under convexity constraint.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that every strictly convex 3-ball with nonnegative Ricci-curvature contains at least 3 embedded free-boundary minimal 2-disks for any generic metric, and at least 2 solutions even without genericity assumption. Our approach combines ideas from mean curvature flow, min-max theory and degree theory. We also establish the existence of smooth free-boundary mean-convex foliations. In stark contrast to our prior work in the closed setting, the present result is sharp for generic metrics.

Abstract:We study the critical points of the renormalized volume for acylindrical geometrically finite hyperbolic 3-manifolds that include rank-1 cusps, and show that the renormalized volume is locally convex around these critical points. We give a modified definition of the renormalized volume that is additive under gluing, and study some local properties.

Abstract:The celebrated Dvoretzky theorem asserts that every $N$-dimensional convex body admits central sections of dimension $d = \Omega(\log N)$, which is nearly spherical. For many instances of convex bodies, typically unit balls with respect to some norm, much better lower bounds on $d$ have been obtained, with most research focusing on such lower bounds and on the degree of approximation of the section by a $k$-dimensional Euclidean ball. In this note we focus on another parameter, namely the radius of the approximating ball. We focus on the case of the unit ball of the space $\ell_1^N$ (the so-called cross-polytope), which is relevant to various questions of interest in theoretical computer science. We will also survey other instances where similar questions for other normed spaces (most often $\ell_p$-spaces or their non-commutative analogues) were found relevant to problems in various areas of mathematics and its applications, and state some open problems. Finally, in view of the computer science ramifications, we will comment on the algorithmic aspects of finding nearly spherical sections.

Abstract:We analyze smooth nonlinear mappings for Hilbert and Banach spaces that carry small balls to convex sets, provided that the radius of the balls is small enough. Being focused on the study of new and mild sufficient conditions for a nonlinear mapping of Hilbert and Banach spaces to be locally convex, we address a suitably reformulated local convexity problem analyzed within the Leray-Schauder homotopy method approach for Hilbert spaces, and within the Lipscitz smoothness condition both for Hilbert and Banach spaces. Some of the results presented in the work prove to be interesting and novel even for finite-dimensional problems. Open problems related to the local convexity property for nonlinear mapping of Banach spaces are also formulated.

Abstract:The Hilbert metric between two points $x,y$ in a bounded convex domain $G$ is defined as the logarithm of the cross-ratio of $x,y$ and the intersection points of the Euclidean line passing through the points $x,y$ and the boundary of the domain. Here, we study this metric in the case of the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^n$. We present an identity between the Hilbert metric and the hyperbolic metric, give several inequalities for the Hilbert metric, and results related to the inclusion properties of the balls defined in the Hilbert metric. Furthermore, we study the distortion of the Hilbert metric under conformal mappings.

Abstract:In this paper, we study generalized versions of the k-center problem, which involves finding k circles of the smallest possible equal radius that cover a finite set of points in the plane. By utilizing the Minkowski gauge function, we extend this problem to generalized balls induced by various convex sets in finite dimensions, rather than limiting it to circles in the plane. First, we establish several fundamental properties of the global optimal solutions to this problem. We then introduce the notion of local optimal solutions and provide a sufficient condition for their existence. We also provide several illustrative examples to clarify the proposed problems.
