Abstract:The development of geophysical methods has increased the relevance of seismic surveys on near-surface geological structures in urban areas. In recent years, one important issue faced by many scholars is how to effectively increase the signal-to-noise ratio of seismic signals and improve the resolution of seismic information. Near-surface layers typically exhibit low velocity and severe lateral velocity variation characteristics due to weathering. Loose structures in a near-surface condition caused by weathering indicate low quality factor, resulting in the intensive absorption of seismic waves passing through these layers, which ultimately limits the effectiveness of information acquired from the received spectrum. To facilitate the investigation of geological conditions such as bedrock surface undulations and hidden structural faults underground in the Second Stage of Qianjiang New Town, Hangzhou City, an analysis of shallow surface attenuation compensation based on downhole seismic data is conducted. In addition, based on the downhole seismic data, the quality factor Q of underground strata was obtained using a spectral ratio method, and the inverse Q filtering was applied to a stacked seismic reflection section in Hangzhou. A set of shallow surface absorption and attenuation compensation techniques suitable for the Second Stage of Qianjiang New Town, Hangzhou City is developed, which can effectively improve the resolution and detection accuracy of seismic sections and provide reliable seismic data and reference methods for future exploration and development in this area.
Application Study Of 3d Seismic Survey In Engineering Investigation

Abstract:3D seismic reflection method is rarely utilized in the urban engineering investigation. Especially, application on this aspect is nearly vacant in China. In order to investigate the application effect of 3D seismic method under the complex condition of cities, we selected a subsurface reservoir as exploration goal in Shanghai and carried out 3D seismic data acquisition. The cross observation system was used and shot/receiver interval was lm. The fold is 36. We use a hydraulic impact mechanism as hypocenter. The geophone's natural frequency is 28Hz. The raw show gathers show that the surface wave and correlation noise are so strong that the reflection signal is hard to identify. So we use surface wave zone noise suppressing methods and FX correlation noise suppressing technology to wide off the noises. Moreover, surface consistent amplitude compensation, inverse deconvolution, residual static, velocity analysis, stack processing technologies and so on are used and the stack sections are acquired. The results show that the reflection from bedrock is interrupted, due to the boundary of the reservoir, by which the area coverage of the reservoir is nearly determined. However, because the reservoir is buried very shallow and its structure is so complex, other geophysical methods and drilling data are needed to identify its precise position. Our study lays a foundation for the further research.
A Theoretical Study on the 3-Degree Freedom Geophone Coupling System for Areas with Limestone Outcrops

Abstract:There is a great potential of extremely abundant oil and gas resources in sedimentary basins of marine carbonate in vast areas of South China. However, it is very difficult to make a good geophone coupling in the field work because of large‐area outcrops of hard limestone, which lead to decline of quality of seismic data and serious limit on hydrocarbon exploration there. Now, geophone coupling test is largely blind due to lack of appropriate theoretical guidance. In this paper, in order to understand the transmission mechanism of the geophone‐limestone coupling system, considering that the coupling media such as gesso, clay and so on involved in field seismic data acquisition, we propose a theory of geophone‐limestone 3‐DOF (degrees of freedom) coupling system based on the vibration dynamic concept. The geophone‐limestone coupling system responses are computed with varying parameters of coupling media, geophone spikes and damping. We find that the geophone‐limestone coupling system is a resonance system which has three resonance frequencies. The results show that the resonance frequency can be increased through increasing the elastic modulus of the coupling medium, reducing the area of the underside and the height of the coupling medium, using spikes with lower material density, reducing the height of the spike and increasing the area of the spike's underside. The results also show that the impact of the narrow frequency bands “band pass filtering” can be decreased by increasing the damping of the coupling system properly. Finally, we preliminarily validate the theoretical model of the geophone‐limestone 3‐DOF coupling system through experiments on a shake table.

Abstract:Tunnel boring machines (TBM) have gained extensive utilization in tunnel construction. Ensuring TBM construction safety hinges upon a precise understanding of adverse geological conditions. To predict geological conditions within the tunnel of the Hangzhou Second Water Diversion Project (Jiangnan Line), a geological analysis was conducted to estimate the potential adverse geological conditions ahead. To obtain the detailed distribution of fractured zones, we devised a tunnel-and-surface integrated seismic detection methodology. This approach integrates surface-wave detection, seismic imaging methods, Tunnel-Seismic-While-Drilling method (TSWD), and seismic ahead-prospecting methods. The surface-wave detection and seismic imaging method were initially employed to achieve a comprehensive assessment of adverse geology on a large scale. Subsequently the TSWD method and seismic ahead-prospecting method were applied within tunnel to get more accurate geological information. The integrated interpretation successfully identified five fractured zones, which were further validated through the analysis of TBM drilling parameters and measurements of uniaxial compressive strength. Compared to the preliminary investigation, the integrated detection method provided a more detailed insight into adverse geological conditions, thus enhancing the safety and efficiency of TBM drilling and tunnel construction. This study underscores the significance of accurate geological analysis for ensuring the success of TBM projects in challenging terrains.

Geophone Coupling Match and Attenuation Compensation in Near-Surface Seismic Exploration

Abstract:An effective geophone-to-ground couple is often difficult to achieve in loose sediment. Unconsolidated sediment can significantly attenuate the high-frequency component of seismic data. Consequently, the resolution and signal-to-noise (S∕N) ratio of seismic data are adversely affected. In order to minimize these effects, two approaches for enhancing seismic reflection data on the basis of ancillary measurements are demonstrated. A coupling match filter was derived by using single trace seismic data from a Seismic Wave Detect System (SWDS) and common receivers under equivalent conditions. The filter was applied to convert a common shot gather to a SWDS shot gather. The high-frequency loss components in stacked data were corrected by an attenuation compensatory inverse filter constructed from uphole seismic data. The results show that the resolution of seismic data from the coupling match filter is nearly equivalent to that of the SWDS data. In addition, the resolution and S∕N ratio were enhanced by the compensatory attenuation inverse filter. These filters can be applied separately or in combination to improve the data quality and compensate high frequency loss in the seismic data without significantly affecting low frequency content.

Abstract:Tunnel seismic advance prediction can effectively reduce the construction risk during tunnel excavation. Compared with the 2-D method, the 3-D method is more conducive to describing the spatial characteristics of the geological body by adding the seismic data in the vertical direction. However, some drawbacks still need improvement in the current 3-D tunnel seismic prediction method. (1) The geometry is complex, which is destructiveness, high cost, and time-consuming, and will delay the tunnel construction schedule. (2) Illumination of the anomalous body is insufficient, and the precision of migration imaging is low. (3) Shot points are far away from the tunnel face, the energy loss at the shot points is more serious. (4) The received signals at the tunnel wall have the surface wave with strong energy when the shot points are placed on the tunnel wall. (5) The geometry is not linear, so the directional filtering method cannot be used to extract the reflection wave. To overcome the drawbacks of the current prediction method, a new 3-D symmetrical tunnel seismic prediction method is proposed. Six geophones are installed on the tunnel wall, two on the left side, two on the right side, and two on the top side. Twenty-four shot points are placed on the tunnel face and near both sides of the tunnel wall, twelve shot points on the left side and twelve shot points on the right side. The shot points will move along with the forward excavation of the tunnel. The wavefield analysis, illumination statistics, and 3-D reverse time migration imaging are used to evaluate the proposed method. The result of modeled data indicates that the proposed 3-D geometry has some advantages: (1) the geometry is simple and the geophone installation time is short; (2) it has high illumination energy, wide illumination range, and can improve the prediction distance and imaging accuracy; (3) the proposed 3-D method can better estimate the velocity of surrounding rock and is more conducive to extracting the reflection wave with high resolution.

Abstract:The adverse geological conditions of soil cave, karst cave and goaf in deep foundation directly affect the safety and economy of geotechnical engineering construction. It is a difficult problem in geotechnical engineering detection to detect the distribution of bad geological conditions efficiently and accurately. Aiming at the problems of short penetrating distance and low resolution of cross-hole acoustic wave detection in rock-soil mass, based on the characteristics of acoustic wave propagation in rock and soil layers and comprehensively utilizing the spark source and data acquisition device, a long-distance cross-hole acoustic wave detection technology is proposed. According to the indoor concrete model test and field tests of geotechnical engineering, the applicability of the long-distance cross-hole acoustic wave detection technology in the detection of geotechnical structure and adverse geological phenomena under complex geological conditions is verified. The results show that acoustic wave CT imaging can accurately detect the cavities in the indoor concrete model test. In addition, the field tests of the grouting effect of tunnel-surrounding rock, high-rise building foundation and subgrade further verify the rapidity, accuracy and intuitiveness of the long-distance cross-hole acoustic wave detection technology. This work provides a reference for eliminating the potential safety problems caused by adverse geological conditions and similar geotechnical engineering investigation.

Abstract:When tunneling in karst mountainous areas, some adverse geological conditions such as karst caves and water-rich strata are often encountered, which may induce unexpected geological hazards and represent major hidden threats to construction safety. This paper describes the successful use of integrated investigation techniques in Qinlan-1 tunnel to predict geological hazards in Guangxi, China. The study area is located in limestone strata which are significantly affected by the fault and developed karst. The comprehensive investigation technique mainly included the geological survey, semi-airborne transient electromagnetic method (SATEM), seismic ahead prospecting (SAP), and ground penetrating radar (GPR). First, SATEM was applied to delineate the distribution scope and depth of the anomalous zones of apparent resistivity in the study area before the tunnel excavation. Then, SAP and GPR were used during excavation to investigate the detailed geological condition, such as the lithological change, the fracture zone's interface, and the karst cave's location. Finally, a fracture zone and a mud-filled karst cave were successfully detected, proving the effectiveness of the comprehensive investigation system. The comprehensive investigation system improves the exploration efficiency and accuracy of the adverse geological structure of the tunnel.

Abstract:Geological risk assessment and prediction are vital processes preceding the design and construction of tunnels, offering crucial insights for ensuring the safe and efficient execution of tunnel projects. The geological challenges posed by water inrush and mud bursts in tunnel engineering are often associated with low-resistance karst fracture zones and karst fissures controlled by structural and stratigraphic trends, providing a robust geophysical foundation for the application of electromagnetic methods. In recent years, the rise of numerous deep, lengthy, and challenging tunnel projects in mountainous regions with intricate terrains has significantly heightened the complexity of tunnel exploration. Traditional geophysical detection methods and geological survey techniques are constrained by site limitations and complex terrains, falling short in effectively detecting geological disasters within operational tunnels. The flexibility and convenience of the ground-airborne transient electromagnetic method (GATEM) make it particularly suitable for operations in complex terrain areas. Taking the application of GATEM in the Daji Tunnel in Guangxi as an example, a background investigation of the topography and lithology of the tunnel area was conducted. A series of data preprocessing, global resistivity definition, terrain correction, depth definition, and terrain offset processes were applied to the GATEM field data to obtain the electrical distribution in the tunnel area. By analyzing the electrical variations on the elevation surface above and below the tunnel, potential water inflow paths were inferred, and the karst positions above the tunnel were mapped, and suggestions are made for the complex situations that may occur during the tunnel construction process. Ultimately, the findings are highly congruent with the actual excavation outcomes of the construction unit, which ensured the safe and efficient construction of the tunnel. Thus, the reliability and superiority of the GATEM in the geological risk investigation of complex terrain tunnel engineering are validated.

Abstract:Forward prospecting to predict the location of high-risk geological zones during tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunneling is important for safe and efficient tunnel construction. Seismic forward-prospecting methods are sensitive to geological structures and have been widely used in areas with relatively well-developed structures, such as mountainous areas with active tectonics. The Gaoligongshan Tunnel in Yunnan, China, with an advance pilot tunnel, was chosen for this study. The advantages of seismic while tunneling and active source methods for different detection distances were investigated, and the methods were combined to determine the geological conditions. An excavate geological study of the tunnel had identified fractured zones ahead of the tunnel face. Our seismic prospecting results were basically consistent with this conclusion. On the basis of these data, the excavation rate was slowed and tunnel support was increased; excavation through the area was then able to proceed without incident. The presence of a pilot tunnel was found to create interference in the seismic signals. We modeled this effect with numerical simulations. On the basis of the results, we discuss appropriate observation systems for use in tunneling projects with pilot tunnels. We demonstrate that seismic signals received by geophones coupled to the wall further from the pilot tunnel reflected the geological conditions for both seismic while tunneling and active source methods. The seismic source should thus be placed on the tunnel wall further from the pilot tunnel to improve results.

Abstract:Tunnel seismic advanced prediction method enables the detection of anomalous bodies in front of the tunnel face and the reduction of tunnel construction risk. The active source and the passive source detection methods are two commonly used for imaging advanced prediction of tunnel boring machine (TBM). Although both methods achieve good results, each method still has room for improvement. The active detection method is not conducive to long-distance detection because the sources are generally far away from the anomalous bodies and the received signals are weak. The passive detection method usually produces results of low resolution and with limited forecast precision. Since the active and passive source methods are applied separately, the geophone utilization rate is low and the cost is high. Moreover, both methods have low signal-to-noise ratio and low imaging resolution for single detection data. To overcome the above drawbacks, this article proposes a joint TBM tunnel seismic detection method and an imaging advanced prediction method to detect anomalous bodies in medium and long distances. The advanced prediction employs multiple stacking schemes to enhance the reflection wave energy of the anomalous bodies and suppress the interference wave. The proposed method integrates the active source data into the passive source method to extract the P- and S-waves. The joint active and passive source method further incorporates multiple stack schemes to achieve much higher resolution imaging and provides more accurate detection results. Moreover, the proposed joint method allows multiple utilization of the geophone and reduces the cost. Simulation results are presented for performance verification.

Abstract:The geological conditions of long tunnels are complex and changeable. Potential structural planes or unfavorable geological structures are random and unpredictable. Sudden geological disasters can easily cause delays in construction periods, economic losses, and even serious casualties. Tunnel monitoring measurement and advanced geological forecast research have always been two major guarantees for safe tunnel construction. However, the current research lacks a clear explanation of the classification of rock mass structural surfaces and the hazard-causing mechanism. Many recent instabilities of surrounding rock structures and The block loss accident has made it a hot issue for research. First, combining the past work of the team, the structural surfaces in the rock mass are mainly divided into two types: exposed and hidden structural surfaces, and different detection methods are summarized for their different occurrence states. Among them, digital compass contact measurement, near Range photogrammetry and laser scanning have become the three major means to support the development of the geological survey of the tunnel structural surface. Secondly, it systematically summarizes the comprehensive detection methods of bad geological structures in the rock mass structure, and introduces the specific application of geophysical technology in tunnel engineering. Finally, the development trends of the above two rock mass structure detection technologies are discussed. Based on the two parts of rock mass structural surface and unfavorable geological structure, it systematically expounds the development status of the existing typical disaster-causing structure detection technology, which can provide important references for researchers in this field, especially field engineers.

Abstract:This paper proposes an analytical solution for the calculation of vibrations from a twin tunnel embedded in a half-space to assess the influence of a neighbouring tunnel on the ground-borne vibrations due to underground railway traffic. Using the wave function method, the total wave field in a half-space containing two cavities is expanded as the combination of down-going plane waves from the free surface and outgoing cylindrical waves from each cavity. The two tunnels are modelled as hollow cylinders, and the wave field inside them can be represented as the superposition of outgoing and regular cylindrical waves. To solve this multiple scattering problem, three sets of coordinate system defined at the scattering surfaces are used to describe the cylindrical waves in polar coordinates and the plane waves in rectangular coordinates. The application of transformation and translation properties between plane and cylindrical waves makes it possible to represent the waves emanating from one scattering surface in terms of the coordinates defined at the other two surfaces. The boundary conditions at the free surface and two tunnels can then be applied to solve for the expansion coefficients for the vector wave functions of plane and cylindrical waves. The present approach is also valid for a multi-layered ground, and in the layer with the tunnels, the field is composed of outgoing waves from the tunnels, down-going waves from the upper interface of the layer and up-going waves from the lower interface. Numerical results show that there is one critical velocity around shear wave speed of soils for a single/twin tunnel in a homogeneous half-space. For a multi-layered geometry, two global critical velocities may exist for the twin tunnel case, and they are determined by the properties of the soil layer where the twin tunnel is located in and the layer below the tunnels.
Theoretical study and tests on geophone-limestone coupling effect

Abstract:The geophone-limestone coupling problem is one of the important factors which influence quality of seismic data in marine carbonate outcrops area of South China. In this paper, using multi-freedom degree vibration system theoretical model, we analyze the response characters of geophone-limestone coupling system. Then combining the theoretical results with field test results, we compare seismic data collected from different geophone coupling modes and discuss the geophone-limestone coupling mechanism. The results show that it is "two degrees of freedom coupling vibration system" to make geophone spike insert into limestone ground. And the resonance frequency is very high and coupling system's influence is very little when making geophone spike insert into limestone ground tightly. But seismic acquisition efficiency is low using this geophone coupling mode. The results also show that it is "three degrees of freedom coupling vibration system" to bury geophone on the limestone ground using coupling mediums such as surface soil. And the seismic acquisition efficiency is high using this geophone coupling mode. However, when using the latter geophone coupling mode, we need to select proper coupling medium and reduce contact acreage between coupling medium and limestone ground and coupling medium's height in order to weaken the coupling resonance.

Abstract:The geological conditions in Yunnan Province, China, are intricate, and numerous challenges are anticipated during tunnel excavation. The goal of this study was to develop a high resolution detection approach combining probe drilling and horizontal cross-hole resistivity tomography to interpret water conducting channels ahead of the tunnel. A complex section of the Xianglu Mountain tunnel was taken as an example. Drilling data from 10 boreholes are used to establish the initial resistivity model ahead of the tunnel face. The utilization of drilling data as a priori information refines the horizontal cross-borehole resistivity tomography imaging results, providing a more accurate depiction of the subsurface conditions. In practical applications, the use of multiple boreholes for high resolution detection via probe drilling analysis and horizontal cross-hole resistivity tomography is relatively uncommon in complex underground environments and represents an engineering innovation. At the Xianglu Mountain tunnel site, 13 electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) profiles were executed to thoroughly assess the geological conditions. A 3-D resistivity model was constructed via interpolation of this dataset. The 3-D resistivity model not only facilitated precise estimation of the 3-D hydrogeological environment at the Xianglu Mountain tunnel site but also enhanced the accuracy of identifying the water conducting channels by revealing low-resistivity interconnected zones. This approach offers a precise guide for determining the location of the critical water conducting channels and for optimizing grouting treatment strategies based on the characterization, geometry, resistivity spatial distribution, and hydrogeological conditions of the studied zones. The acquired results, which are in good accordance with the reality of the studied area in terms of locating the water conducting channels, can be utilized to develop preventative techniques for water and mud inrush disasters during tunnel construction.

Detection of Beaded Karst Caves in Subway Works by Mixed-Source Surface Wave Survey: A Case Study

Abstract:Karst cave causes geological disasters in tunneling engineering, which brings great risks to subway construction. The microtremor survey has become one of the main methods for karst cave detection in urban areas due to its convenience and great detection depth. However, the microtremor survey lacks high-frequency signals, resulting in poor detection accuracy on the shallow layer. An advanced method called mixed-source surface wave (MSW) method is proposed by imposing active sources during the continuous passive surface wave survey. MSW is applied to the detection of beaded karst caves (i.e. two or three karst caves at different depths in the same location) in Ji'nan, China. The influences of ambient noise, array type, and other factors on the detection accuracy were studied. Experimental results show that the detection depth and accuracy of MSW are much better than those of passive surface wave method. The inversion accuracy of linear array perpendicular to road is better than the triangle array and L-shaped array. The accuracy of the linear array along the road is worst. The detection accuracy of MSW is similar to that of combined active–passive surface wave methods. However, the basic principle of MSW is easier to understand, and its operation is more convenient. The two-dimensional measurement results show that the MSW method can well reflect the size and location of the beaded karst cave and provide important references for the practical engineering.

Abstract:The interaction between closely-spaced twin tunnels has emerged as a prominent topic in tunnelling engineering, especially under complicated geological conditions like high water pressure and deep burial depth. This paper proposes a novel monitoring technology that utilizes MEMS multi-parameter fusion sensors in conjunction with wireless signal transmission technology to track the structural response of the existing tunnel during the construction of closely-spaced cross-river twin tunnels. The experiment enabled prompt deployment of monitoring devices without disrupting the construction process, and the investigation meticulously monitored the additional stresses, tilt angles, and relative displacement on the former tunnel lining. The results indicate that: (1) The progression of the additional stresses in former tunnel is classified into five stages, corresponding to the advancement of later tunnel's construction and dependent on the position of its heading face. (2) The intensity and spatial distribution of additional axial and circumferential stresses are non-uniform and depend on the proximity to the later tunnel. (3) The degree of change in the tilt angle is directly proportional to the distance from the later tunnel. (4) The deformation of the circumferential joint exhibits oblique uphill deformation with upward deflection at the lower-middle segment and downward deflection at the top, elliptical deformation with radial convergence and vertical expansion, and nearly no rotational deformation in the circumferential direction. The deformation of the longitudinal joint is manifested as an upward displacement of the upper segment blocks in the excavation direction, with radial convergence and leftward horizontal displacement, resulting in circumferential compression. (5) There is a remarkable correlation between the additional stress, tilt angle, and deformation characteristics, with the three factors changing in concert. (6) Secondary grouting exerts a significant influence on the stress and deformation of segments, and despite being localized, it may cause additional damage to the tunnel structure. This paper provides a dependable and efficient approach to monitoring the performance of twin tunnels in complex geological situations. Furthermore, the results highlight the interaction mechanism between twin tunnels and the combined effect of structural response, providing guidance for similar projects.

Abstract:Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are effective tools for excavating tunnels through various soil and rock strata, especially in complex urban areas. During excavating, hazards overlooked during site investigation, such as abrupt geological changes, buried obstacles like boulders and building foundations, fault zones, and water-bearing regions, significantly increase the risks of cutter damage and tunneling accidents. Geophysical methods have been proposed during tunnel excavation to predict these potential hazards ahead of the cutter face. With the existence of a metallic TBM and subsequently installed concrete tunnel lining, the performance of electromagnetic geophysical methods such as ground-penetrating radar and DC resistivity tomography are greatly hampered, despite their success in the traditional open tunnels. In this study, we present a passive seismic method to forecast the tunneling risks ahead of the TBM cutterhead. This method uses the working TBM as the source and predicts the velocity/density changes in front of the TBM by delineating the reflected seismic energy from the noisy recordings. The key to this technology is seismic interferometry, which transforms the chaotic ambient noise into interpretable seismic profiles. We utilize beamforming and semblance analysis to extract the traveltime information from the passive records. After velocity inversion and calibration, we map the arrival-time of a reflection event to a seismic impedance interface ahead of the cutterface. To test the proposed method, we demonstrate the process on a simulated passive seismic record after laying out its theoretical foundations. We present a field application of our method where geological interfaces are predicted in real time as the excavation progresses. The field data results match well with the muck density and TBM parameters measured after excavation and hence demonstrate the applicability of our method in complex urban environments for tunneling risk reduction.

Given the major electrical resistivity contrast between karst cavities and host rocks, geo‐electrical methods are widely used for mapping karst cavities. A successful case history of mapping karst cavities in the planed railway route using CSAMT is presented in this paper. Scalar CSAMT, with the frequency ranging from 8192 Hz to 0.5 Hz, is used in the field data acquisition. Bostick conversion with EMAP filtering is used for data processing. G Tunnel is one the key tunnel of Gui‐Guang high speed railway. The initial geophysical and engineering geological result considered the bed rocks of the survey section as sand rock, and no karst cavity was expected in the engineering design in this section. An initial CSAMT survey indicated the presence of a resistivity anomaly along the tunnel route and it was interpreted that a karst cavity was developed on the predicted path of the tunnel. A borehole drilled on this anomaly confirmed the presence of a karst cavity as the drilling result agreed closely with the geophysical anomaly. Abstract:Numerous near surface geophysical techniques have been applied to the tunnel detection problem. Thus far, successful techniques require differentiating tunnel signature from noise, or a priori knowledge of tunnel location for data acquisition and processing. We propose a seismic method that has the potential to minimize interaction with the data and requires no a priori knowledge of tunnel location. Synthetic fixed receiver spread data is processed first in the common source domain then in the common receiver domain, resulting in a final gather than contains a relatively large-amplitude, low-frequency wavelet from which the depth and lateral location of the tunnel can be determined. This study indicates that this method could possibly be used as part of a semi-automated procedure for tunnel detection.
