Abstract:With the expanding range of manipulator applications, the ability to interact with the environment in a compliant and safe manner becomes increasingly important. In this paper, a force tracking impedance controller is proposed to perform variable force tracking in unknown environments. Specifically, an RBFNN-based adaptation method is employed to explore the contact dynamics and modify the reference trajectory online. The inner loop impedance controller generates compliant interactions and unifies task space motion and force tracking in the target model. Meanwhile, the force manipulability is optimized using null space control, which is motivated by human arm configuration during force exertion. Numerical studies are conducted to validate the proposed control scheme and results show high performance in force tracking and reduction of maximum joint torque.

Abstract:Nowadays, robots are increasingly used in various surgery applications. Meanwhile, in many of these applications, the operation tools of surgical robots need to be in contact with human soft tissues. Furthermore, this tool-soft tissue interaction brings great challenges to robot control and system performance due to the nonlinearity, viscoelasticity, and uncertainties of the soft environment. To address these challenges and achieve the desired interaction behavior, a learning-based force controller for a surgical robot, which consists of a feedforward plus feedback controller, a radial basis function neural network-based controller, and an adaptive proportional-integral-type sliding mode control-based compensator, is presented in this letter. To display the stability of the proposed controller, the control system of the robot is analyzed through the Lyapunov method. Finally, several experiments are carried out in the robot prototype and the results illustrate that good tracking performance and guaranteed robustness can be obtained by the proposed controller.
Unified Motion/Force/Impedance Control for Manipulators in Unknown Contact Environments Based on Robust Model-Reaching Approach

Abstract:With the developments of intelligent and autonomous robotic technology, robots are usually designed to confront sophisticated tasks such as automated assembly, which requires both high-speed positioning capabilities and compliance with unknown contact environments. As we know, a high-performance motion tracking control in free space can achieve efficient and accurate positioning, while impedance or force control shows superior performance in terms of sensitive force and compliance with unknown contact environments. However, it is still challenging to achieve both high-performance motion tracking and compliance within one single control framework, especially in unknown contact environments. To this end, in this article, a unified motion/force/impedance approach for unknown contact environments is proposed by robust model-reaching control with dynamic trajectory adaptation. Specifically, the overall control scheme includes two loops: the outer loop replans the trajectories of motion and force in real time to meet the environmental constraints, which are estimated by the recursive least squares estimation law; in the inner loop, the robust model-reaching control law is proposed to realize a target model, which is designed to establish a dynamic relationship between the motion and force tracking errors of the replanned trajectories. Then, by changing the matrices of the target model, the compromise between motion tracking and force tracking can be achieved, as well as different control objectives. Experiments are conducted on a seven-degree-of-freedom manipulator to validate the advantages of the proposed scheme.
Adaptive fractional-order admittance control for force tracking in highly dynamic unknown environments

Abstract:Purpose With the increasing demands of industrial applications, it is imperative for robots to accomplish good contact-interaction with dynamic environments. Hence, the purpose of this research is to propose an adaptive fractional-order admittance control scheme to realize a robot–environment contact with high accuracy, small overshoot and fast response. Design/methodology/approach Fractional calculus is introduced to reconstruct the classical admittance model in this control scheme, which can more accurately describe the complex physical relationship between position and force in the interaction process of the robot–environment. In this control scheme, the pre-PID controller and fuzzy controller are adopted to improve the system force tracking performance in highly dynamic unknown environments, and the fuzzy controller is used to improve the trajectory, transient and steady-state response by adjusting the pre-PID integration gain online. Furthermore, the stability and robustness of this control algorithm are theoretically and experimentally demonstrated. Findings The excellent force tracking performance of the proposed control algorithm is verified by constructing highly dynamic unstructured environments through simulations and experiments. In simulations and experiments, the proposed control algorithm shows satisfactory force tracking performance with the advantages of fast response speed, little overshoot and strong robustness. Practical implications The control scheme is practical and simple in the actual industrial and medical scenarios, which requires accurate force control by the robot. Originality/value A new fractional-order admittance controller is proposed and verified by experiments in this research, which achieves excellent force tracking performance in dynamic unknown environments.

Abstract:Abstract Current research in robot compliance control is unable to take both transient contact force overshoots and steady-state force tracking problems into account. To address this problem, we propose a fuzzy fractional order (FO) adaptive impedance controller to avoid the force overshoots in the contact stage while keeping force error in the dynamic tracking stage, where traditional control algorithms are not competent. A percentage gain is adopted to map FO parameters to integer order (IO) parameters by their natural properties, and a fuzzy logical controller is introduced to improve the system stability. The simulation results indicate that the proposed controller can be made more stable than and superior to the general impedance controller, and the force tracking results also have been compared with the previous control methods.

Abstract:With increasing links in a manipulator system, efficacy and usefulness are enhanced along with the complexity. In this paper, a fractional-order self-tuned fuzzy PID (FOSTFPID) controller is investigated to control a highly nonlinear, coupled multi-input multi-output, three-link rigid robotic manipulator system. The performance of FOSTFPID controller is investigated for trajectory tracking, disturbance rejection, noise suppression and model uncertainty. The comparative analysis between the performances of FOSTFPID, fractional-order fuzzy PID and integer-order self-tuning fuzzy PID controllers, all tuned for minimum weighted sum of integral of absolute error and integral of absolute change in controller output using cuckoo search algorithm, revealed a clear superiority of FOSTFPID for trajectory tracking, disturbance rejection, noise suppression and model uncertainty.

Abstract:In this paper, a new simple stable force tracking impedance control scheme that has the capability to track a specified desired force and to compensate for uncertainties in environment location and stiffness as well as in robot dynamic model is proposed. The uncertainties in robot dynamics are compensated by the robust position control algorithm. After contact, in force controllable direction the new impedance function is realized based on a desired force, environment stiffness and a position error. The new impedance function is simple and stable. The force error is minimized by using an adaptive technique. Stability and convergence of the adaptive technique are analyzed for a stable force tracking execution. Simulation studies with a three link rotary robot manipulator are shown to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed scheme under uncertainties in robot dynamics, and little knowledges of environment position and environment stiffness. Experimental results are carried out to confirm the proposed controller's performance.

Unified Force and Motion Adaptive-Integral Control of Flexible Robot Manipulators

Abstract:In this paper, an adaptive nonlinear strategy for the motion and force control of flexible manipulators is proposed. The approach provides robust motion control until contact is detected when force control is then available--without any control switch--, and vice versa. This self-tuning in mixed contact/non-contact scenarios is possible thanks to the unified formulation of force and motion control, including an integral transpose-based inverse kinematics and adaptive-update laws for the flexible manipulator link and contact stiffnesses. Global boundedness of all signals and asymptotic stability of force and position are guaranteed through Lyapunov analysis. The control strategy and its implementation has been validated using a low-cost basic microcontroller and a manipulator with 3 flexible joints and 4 actuators. Complete experimental results are provided in a realistic mixed contact scenario, demonstrating very-low computational demand with inexpensive force sensors.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present a simple yet effective force control scheme for collaborative robots by addressing the problem of disturbance rejection in joint torque: inherent actuator flexibility and nonlinear friction. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, a joint torque controller with an extended state observer is used to decouple the joint actuators from the multi-rigid-body system of a constrained robot and compensate the motor friction. Moreover, to realize robot force control, the authors embed this controller into the impedance control framework. Findings Results have been given in simulations and experiments in which the proposed joint torque controller with an extended state observer can effectively estimate and compensate the total disturbance. The overall control framework is analytically proved to be stable, and further it is validated in experiments with a robot testbed. Practical implications With the proposed robot force controller, the robot is able to change its stiffness in real time and therefore take variable tasks without any accessories, such as the RCC or 6-DOF F/T sensor. In addition, programing by demonstration can be realized easily within the proposed framework, which makes the robot accessible to unprofessional users. Originality/value The main contribution of the presented work is the design of a model-free robot force controller with the ability to reject torque disturbances from robot-actuator coupling effect and motor friction, applicable for both constrained and unconstrained environments. Simulation and experiment results from a 7-DOF robot are given to show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed controller.

Abstract:In this paper, a variable impedance control method is proposed for uncertain robotic systems based on a nonlinear force contact-based flexible environmental model. First, a nonlinear force contact model between the rigid manipulator and flexible environment is applied to the compliant control of the manipulator, which can avoid excessive force overshoot that usually exists in the traditional spring-damping environmental model. Then, to achieve better force/position tracking performances, a fuzzy-based adaptive variable impedance controller is designed based on the force contact-based flexible environmental model, where the impedance parameters are adjusted online through the force and position feedback of the robotic system, and the fuzzy logic system is used to compensate the uncertainties. Moreover, the stability of the adaptive variable impedance control scheme is proved by the Routh stability criterion, and the boundness of all the signals in the closed-loop control system is guaranteed by the Lyapunov stability theorem. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the simulation of a two-link manipulator, and the results demonstrate that the performances of position tracking are improved, while the force overshoot and oscillation time are reduced.

Abstract:Fractals, Ahead of Print. This paper presents an advanced control strategy based on Fractional-Order Sliding Mode Control (FO-SMC), which introduces a robust solution to significantly improve the reliability of robotic manipulator systems and increase its control performance. The proposed FO-SMC strategy includes a two-key term-based Fractional Sliding Function (FSF) that presents the main contribution of this work. Additionally, a fractional-order-based Lyapunov stability analysis is developed for a class of nonlinear systems to guarantee the asymptotic stability of the closed loop system. Four FSF-based versions of the designed FO-SMC are studied and discussed. Various scenarios of the proposed control strategy are tested on a 3-degree-of-freedom SCARA robotic arm and compared to recent FO-SMC works, demonstrating the effectiveness of the new proposed control strategy to (i) ensure the asymptotic stability, (ii) achieve a smooth start-up, (iii) cancel the static error, giving a good tracking trajectory, and (iv) reduce the control torques, yielding a consumed energy minimization.

Abstract:The force-free control means that the robot arm does not seem to be affected by gravity, frictions, and inertial force during the interaction with human. An advanced force-free control method can greatly improve work efficiency. In this paper, a novel force-free control method of the flexible-joint robot is proposed. First, the mathematical models of flexible joint and flexible-joint robot are established, and the force-free controller which can realize the gravity-free situation and reduce the frictions and inertial torques is designed based on the models. Then, the dynamic parameters of the robot arm are obtained by means of a self-measuring way. Finally, a flexible-joint robot experimental system is assembled, and the verification of force-free control method is carried out. Moreover, the method converts external force into joint velocities in the joint servo controllers to improve the stability of the movement.
Control of a Flexible Robot Arm: Experimental and Theoretical Results

Abstract:The operation of high precision robots is severely limited by. their manipulator dynamic deflection, which persists for a period of time after a move is completed. These unwanted vibrations deteriorate the end effector positional accuracy and reduce significantly the robot arm production rate. A “rigid and flexible motion controller” is derived to introduce additional damping into the flexible motion. This is done by using additional sensors to measure the compliant link vibrations and feed them back to the controller. The existing actuators at the robot joints are used (i.e., no additional actuators are introduced). The performance of the controller is tested on a dynamic model, developed in previous work, for a spherical coordinate robot arm whose last link only is considered to be flexible. The simulation results show a significant reduction in the vibratory motion. The important issue of control and observation spillover is examined and found to present no significant practical problems. Partial evaluation of this approach is performed experimentally by testing two controllers, a “rigid body controller” and a “rigid and flexible motion controller,” on a single joint of a spherical coordinate, laboratory robot arm. The experimental results show a significant reduction in the end effector dynamic deflection; thus partially validating the results of the digital simulation studies.

Abstract:Compliant interaction control is a key technology for robots performing contact-rich manipulation tasks. The design of the compliant controller needs to consider the robot hardware because complex control algorithms may not be compatible with the hardware performance, especially for some industrial robots with low bandwidth sensors. This paper focuses on effective and easy-to-use compliant control algorithms for position/velocity-controlled robots. Inspired by human arm stiffness adaptation behavior, a novel variable target stiffness (NVTS) admittance control strategy is proposed for adaptive force tracking, in which a proportional integral derivative (PID) variable stiffness law is designed to update the stiffness coefficient of the admittance function by the force and position feedback. Meanwhile, its stability and force-tracking capability are theoretically proven. In addition, an impact compensator (Impc) is integrated into the NVTS controller to enhance its disturbance-suppression capability when the robot is subjected to strong vibration disturbances in complicated surface polishing tasks. The proposed controllers are validated through four groups of experimental tests using different robots and the corresponding results demonstrate that they have high-accuracy tracking capability and strong adaptability in unknown environments.

Abstract:This technical note discusses a contact-force control problem of a one-link flexible arm. This flexible arm includes a Timoshenko beam, and thus we call it the flexible Timoshenko arm. The primary aim is to control the contact force at the contact point. To do so, we first apply our previously proposed force controller, which exponentially stabilizes the closed-loop system of a flexible Euler-Bernoulli arm, to the force-control problem of the flexible Timoshenko arm. We then show that our previously proposed force controller cannot exponentially stabilize the flexible Timoshenko arm. Next, we consider the flexible Timoshenko arm, which is making contact with a soft environment. By utilizing the damping force in the soft environment, as well as the controller, we try to overcome the problem. We then prove the exponential stability of the closed-loop system. Finally, we provide simulation results, and consider the validity of our force controller.

Abstract:Torque control algorithms which consider robot dynamics and contact constraints are important for creating dynamic behaviors for humanoids. As computational power increases, algorithms tend to also increase in complexity. However, it is not clear how much complexity is really required to create controllers which exhibit good performance. In this paper, we study the capabilities of a simple approach based on contact consistent LQR controllers designed around key poses to control various tasks on a humanoid robot. We present extensive experimental results on a hydraulic, torque controlled humanoid performing balancing and stepping tasks. This feedback control approach captures the necessary synergies between the DoFs of the robot to guarantee good control performance. We show that for the considered tasks, it is only necessary to re-linearize the dynamics of the robot at different contact configurations and that increasing the number of LQR controllers along desired trajectories does not improve performance. Our result suggest that very simple controllers can yield good performance competitive with current state of the art, but more complex, optimization-based whole-body controllers. Abstract:Haptic interaction is essential for the dynamic dexterity of animals, which seamlessly switch from an impedance to an admittance behaviour using the force feedback from their proprioception. However, this ability is extremely challenging to reproduce in robots, especially when dealing with complex interaction dynamics, distributed contacts, and contact switching. Current model-based controllers require accurate interaction modelling to account for contacts and stabilise the interaction. In this manuscript, we propose an adaptive force/position controller that exploits the fractal impedance controller's passivity and non-linearity to execute a finite search algorithm using the force feedback signal from the sensor at the end-effector. The method is computationally inexpensive, opening the possibility to deal with distributed contacts in the future. We evaluated the architecture in physics simulation and showed that the controller can robustly control the interaction with objects of different dynamics without violating the maximum allowable target forces or causing numerical instability even for very rigid objects. The proposed controller can also autonomously deal with contact switching and may find application in multiple fields such as legged locomotion, rehabilitation and assistive robotics.
Robust tracking control of flexible manipulators using hybrid backstepping/nonlinear reduced-order active disturbance rejection control

Abstract:This study presents a novel hybrid control strategy for single-link flexible-joint robot manipulators, addressing inherent uncertainties and nonlinear dynamics. By integrating nonlinear reduced-order active disturbance rejection control (NRADRC) with backstepping control, the proposed method effectively estimates and mitigates nonlinear dynamics and external disturbances. Utilizing a nonlinear reduced-order extended state observer (NRESO) enhances resilience to internal and external uncertainties. The global stability of the proposed controller is rigorously established using the Lyapunov approach. Numerical comparisons with state-of-the-art nonlinear control methods demonstrate the superior efficiency and robustness of the proposed approach, especially under varying payloads and disturbances, advancing robotic control solutions.

Abstract:This paper investigates real-time control strategies for dynamical systems that involve frictional contact interactions. Hybridness and underactuation are key characteristics of these systems that complicate the design of feedback controllers. In this research, we examine and test a novel feedback controller design on a planar pushing system, where the purpose is to control the motion of a sliding object on a flat surface using a point robotic pusher. The pusher-slider is a simple dynamical system that retains many of the challenges that are typical of robotic manipulation tasks. Our results show that a model predictive control approach used in tandem with integer programming offers a powerful solution to capture the dynamic constraints associated with the friction cone as well as the hybrid nature of the contact. In order to achieve real-time control, simplifications are proposed to speed up the integer program. The concept of Family of Modes (FOM) is introduced to solve an online convex optimization problem by selecting a set of contact mode schedules that spans a large set of dynamic behaviors that can occur during the prediction horizon. The controller design is applied to stabilize the motion of a sliding object about a nominal trajectory, and to re-plan its trajectory in real-time to follow a moving target. We validate the controller design through numerical simulations and experimental results on an industrial ABB IRB 120 robotic arm.

Abstract:A stable neuro-fuzzy (NF) adaptive controller that incorporates the robot dynamics as well as the joint motor dynamics is proposed in this paper for the trajectory tracking of a flexible-link robot with poorly known dynamics. Above all, based on singular perturbation and time-scale decomposition method, dynamics of a flexible-link robot is reduced into a slow subsystem of an equivalent rigid-link arm, a fast subsystem of flexible vibration. Then a NF adaptive controller and a fuzzy proportional-derivative (PD) controller are designed for the slow and fast subsystems separately, and a parameter adaptive controller method for joint motors is proposed. The system stability and tracking error convergence are proved using Lyapunov stability theorem, learning algorithms for free parameters of NF systems and joint motor dynamics are obtained thereby. Finally, simulation studies are carried out to show the viability and effectiveness of the proposed control approach.
