Abstract:Janus polymerization is a novel and efficient way to synthesize diblock and multiblock copolymers in one step by using Lu(OTf)(3) and propylene epoxide as a catalytic system. By modifying the epoxide initiator, which is located at the block junction with various functional groups, the possibility for future topological design is provided. Herein, 2-bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-en-2-yl oxirane (NB-EO) is used as an alternative for propylene epoxide to synthesize a poly(THF-co-CL)-b-PCL diblock copolymer featuring a norbornene group at this position. This also results in multiblock [poly(THF-co-CL)-b-PCL](m) copolymers carrying multiple norbornene moieties through Janus polymerization. Subsequent ring-opening metathesis copolymerization (ROMP) of the resulting poly(THF-co-CL)-b-PCL macromonomers with norbornenyl-terminated polysarcosine (PSar-NB) allows the facile preparation of heterograft molecular polymer brushes (MPBs). The MPBs feature three heterografts of PCL, P(CL-co-THF) and PSar, potentially equipping these structures with biocompatibility, biodegradability, semi-crystallinity, and amphiphilicity. A phase separation is observed after annealing in both TEM and AFM analysis. Due to their amphiphilic nature, the MPBs also undergo self-assembly into micelles in aqueous solution. Such materials combining polypeptoids, polyesters, and polyethers segments are expected to attract wide attention in drug delivery applications.

Abstract:To the Editor: We read with interest the article by Chekmareva et al. (1), and the associated correspondence from Mittal (2), regarding immunohistochemical staining of endocervical and endometrial mucinous lesions. As part of their study, the former authors noted that 9 of 15 cases of benign endocervical epithelium expressed vimentin (1). However, an earlier study by Qiu and Mittal (3) reported that normal endocervical epithelium was vimentin-negative, and Mittal commented that epithelial staining within the cervix could be related to tubal metaplasia, as tubal-type epithelium is known to express vimentin (4). In our experience, normal endocervical epithelium frequently shows vimentin immunoreactivity, in agreement with the findings of Chekmareva et al. (1). However, the staining may be focal, and is often relatively subtle, being restricted in distribution to the basal (subnuclear) aspect of the cells with delicate lateral cell border extension. Therefore, at low power or scanning magnification the endocervical epithelium often seems to be vimentin-negative in contrast to the more strongly stained surrounding stromal elements. As noted by Mittal (2), tubal or tuboendometrioid metaplasia within the cervix typically shows strong and diffuse cytoplasmic vimentin expression, and therefore such staining is more obvious than that observed in normal endocervical cells. In contrast, we have found that endocervical adenocarcinoma in situ (ACIS) is usually completely negative for vimentin, in agreement with the study by Marques et al. (4), and therefore the neoplastic

Abstract:Polymer brushes have garnered widespread attention for their potential applications in some emerging fields such as antifouling coating, drug delivery and high-efficiency catalyst. However, the difficulties in precisely controlling the structure and composition of polymer brushes severely degraded their physicochemical properties and chemical conformation. Herein, we developed an effective strategy to prepare structurally controllable atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) macroinitiator using multi-site polydienes as the polymer backbone and chlorine as the modifier. The amount of grafting allyl chloride groups could be effectively adjusted by regulating the reaction time, thereby achieving the programming ATRP macromolecular initiator with high-fidelity terminal chlorine groups. Thereinto, with chlorinated polydienes as the ATRP macroinitiator and polymer backbone, and resultant polystyrene as the side chains, the well-defined polystyrene brushes bearing controlled worm-like and rod-like structures were obtained. Benefiting from the branched structure, polystyrene brushes exhibited low intrinsic viscosity, compact molecular dimensions, and high terminal group functionality. Further, we prepared novel a superhydrophobic nanomaterial, namely, SiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs)-polymer brushes, which demonstrated high non-wetting and excellent antifouling performance. Consequently, the approach and results collectively provide a promising avenue and perspective for preparing brush-like polymers with precisely designed structures and functionality.

Abstract:Chitosan-derived brush polymers with well-defined chemical structure were synthesized by combining ATRP with sodium dodecyl sulphate-chitosan complex(SCC)-based regioselective modification strategy.ATRP macromolecular initiator,O-bromobutyrated CS(CS-Br),was conveniently prepared by grafting bromoisobutyrate onto the hydroxy groups of SCC and subsequently removing SDS from the O-bromobutyrated SCC.The structure of product was characterized by FT-IR and 1H-NMR.Results showed that the grafting level of POEGMA could be adjusted by varying the degree of substitution(DS) of bromobutyrate.By changing molar feeding ratio of OEGMA to CS-Br,the degree of polymerization of POEGMA could be modulated.

Abstract:Polymer brushes are thin polymer films in which the individual polymer chains are tethered by one chain end to a solid interface. The bulk and solution properties of these highly branched polymers are very different from their linear analogs of comparable molar mass. These polymers exhibit some remarkable characteristics and properties that are unattainable by other architecture of polymer. Owing to these remarkable characteristics, the interest in polymer brushes has been developed from their significance in various fields, such as controlled drug/gene delivery, tissue engineering, imaging and notably to the design of stimuli-responsive materials where the length, composition, architecture and topology of the chains allow changes in different environments. The generation of polymer brushes by surface-initiated controlled radical polymerization (CRP) methods has become a robust approach to tailor the chemical and physical properties of interfaces and has given rise to great innovations in surface and interface engineering. This review article will first present a thorough summary of the synthetic strategies towards polymer brushes, then review the different synthesis and characterization methods of polymer brushes followed by their fascinating properties, and lastly summarize promising applications of polymer brushes. The goal of this contribution is to offer a comprehensive review that critically assesses recent advances in the field and emphasizes the prospects and challenges for future work.

Abstract:Polymer brushes are typically densely grafted assemblies of polymer chains that are tethered via one end group to a solid substrate. Anchoring linear polymer chains via both end groups to a surface results in loop-type polymer brushes. Although loop polymer brushes have been shown to be able to outperform their linear, single-chain-end tethered analogues, for example, with respect to the prevention of biofouling or reducing friction, this brush architecture has received only relatively limited attention. Loop-type polymer brushes are mostly prepared following grafting-onto approaches using α,ω-heterobifunctional polymers. Grafting-from strategies, so far, have been rarely explored, but could further expand the range of accessible polymer molecular weights and brush grafting densities and allow the preparation of surface-attached polymer loops from a wider scope of monomers. This manuscript reports an alternative grafting-from strategy for the preparation of loop-type poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) brushes. The strategy presented here starts with the preparation of linear polymer grafts using conventional surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. The free chain-ends of the linear PMMA grafts are modified with an allyl group and subsequently subjected to a metathesis reaction to induce loop closure. The formation of the loop PMMA brushes was monitored by gel permeation chromatography analysis after cleavage of the polymer from the silica nanoparticles.

Synthesis of Raspberry-like Nanoparticles via Surface Grafting of Positively Charged Polyelectrolyte Brushes: Colloidal Stability and Surface Properties

Abstract:A method to synthesize stable, raspberry-like nanoparticles (NPs), using surface grafting of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) brushes on a polystyrene (PS) core with varying grafting densities, is reported. A two-step functionalization reaction of PGMA epoxide groups comprising an amination step first using ethylene diamine and then followed by a quaternization using glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride generates permanently and positively charged polyelectrolyte brushes, which result in both steric and electrostatic stabilization. The dispersion stability of the brush-bearing NPs is dramatically improved compared to that of the pristine PS core in salt solutions at ambient (25 °C) and elevated temperatures (60 °C). Additionally, the grafted polyelectrolyte chains undergo a reversible swelling in the presence of different ionic strength (IS) salts, which modulate the surface properties, including roughness, stiffness, and adhesion. An atomic force microscope under both dry and wet conditions was used to image conformational changes of the polyelectrolyte chains during the swelling and deswelling transitions as well as to probe the nanomechanical properties by analyzing the corresponding force-sample separation curves. The quaternized polyelectrolyte brushes undergo a conformational transition from a collapsed state to a swelled state in the osmotic brush (OB) regime triggered by the osmotic gradient of mobile ions to the interior of the polymer chain. At IS ∼ 1 M, the brushes contract and the globules reform (salted brush state) as evidenced by an increase in the surface roughness and a reduction in the adhesion of the brushes. Beyond IS ∼ 1 M, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring measurements show that salt uptake continues to take place predominantly on the exterior surface of the brush since salt adsorption is not accompanied by a size increase as measured by dynamic light scattering. The study adds new insights into our understanding of the behavior of NPs bearing salt-responsive polyelectrolyte brushes with adaptive swelling thresholds that can ultimately modulate surface properties.

Abstract:Surface grafting of polymer brushes drastically modifies surface properties, including wettability, compatibility, responsiveness, etc. A broad variety of functionalities can be introduced to the surface via different types of polymers. Bringing together properties of two or more types of polymer brushes to one surface opens up even more possibilities in brush-modified materials. However, while it is generally feasible to introduce several chemical compositions along the brushes via copolymerization, it is challenging to vary the types of polymer brushes along a surface. Although previous studies have demonstrated binary brushes via orthogonal polymerization techniques or partial deactivation/regrafting, they commonly limit the number of polymer types to two. Here, we propose a strategy to introduce dynamic covalent diketoenamine linkages at the root of polymer brushes. The grafting density could be precisely tuned during surface functionalization. The surface-anchored polymer brushes were cleaved by the addition of small molecule amines. New polymer brushes can be regrafted from the surface following refunctionalization of exposed sites. The maneuverability allows tuning of the types and densities of the polymer brushes, pointing the way to the preparation of a new generation of well-defined brush-modified materials with mixed grafts, with potential applications in the design of smart materials and surfaces.

Abstract:Iron-mediated surface-initiated reversible deactivation radical polymerization (Fe0 SI-RDRP) is an appealing approach to produce robust polymer surfaces with low toxicity and biocompatibility, while its application has been limited so far due to the poor activity of iron-based catalysts. Herein, we show that the iron(0)-mediated surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (Fe0 SI-ATRP) could be significantly enhanced by simply using seawater as reaction media. In comparison, there was no polymer brush formation in deionized water. This method could convert a range of monomers to well-defined polymer brushes with unparalleled speed (up to 31.5 nm min-1) and a minor amount of monomer consumption (μL). Moreover, the resultant polymer brush shows chain-end fidelity which could be exemplified by repetitive Fe0 SI-ATRP to obtain tetrablock brushes. Finally, we show the preparation of polymer-brush-gated ion-selective membranes by Fe0 SI-ATRP for osmotic energy conversion, which gives excellent power densities of 5.93 W m-2, outperforming the most reported as well as commercialized benchmark (5 W m-2).

Abstract:We synthesized a coil-g-rod polymer brush, poly{styrene-alt-(maleimide-g-poly{2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene})}(P{St-alt-(MI-g-PMPCS)}), by alternating copolymerization of styrene (St) and maleimide-terminated poly{2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene} (MI-PMPCS) with the grafting through strategy. MI-PMPCS was synthesized by using the protection strategy in which the initiator protected by DielsAlder reaction with furan was used to initiate atom transfer radical polymerization of 2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene (MPCS), and then furan was deprotected by retro-DielsAlder reaction. 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and GPC coupled with multiangle laser light scattering were used to determine the chemical structures and molecular weights of the polymer brushes. The highest degree of polymerization (DP) of the main chain is 103, which is significantly large for polymer brushes with rigid side chains. The main-chain length increases with increasing feeding ratio and decreases with increasing side-chain length. The thermal properties and transitions of all samples were studied by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Finally, polarized light microscopy and one-/two-dimensional wide-angle X-ray diffraction were used to examine the phase structures of the polymer brushes. To our surprise, when the DP of the side chain is below the critical value of PMPCS for forming liquid crystalline (LC) phases, the polymer brush can form the LC phase. On the one hand, with the longer main chain, the LC phase of the polymer brush becomes less ordered. On the other hand, with the longer side chain, the LC phase of the polymer brush becomes more ordered. For polymer brushes with LC side chains, the LC phase of the polymer brush may be less ordered than that of the LC PMPCS side chain.
Facile Fabrication of Bio‐ and Dual‐Functional Poly(2‐oxazoline) Bottle‐Brush Brush Surfaces

Abstract:Poly(2‐oxazoline)s (POx) bottle‐brush brushes have excellent bioniert and lubricious properties, which are promising for the functionalization of surfaces for biomedical devices. Here, we report a facile synthesis of POx based bottle‐brush brushes (BBBs) on solid substrates. Initially, backbone brushes of poly(2‐iso‐propenyl‐2‐oxazoline) (PIPOx) are fabricated via surface initiated Cu(0) plate‐mediated controlled radical polymerization (SI‐CuCRP). Poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline) (PMeOx) side chains are subsequently grafted from the PIPOx backbone via living cationic ring opening polymerization (LCROP), which result in ~100 % increase in brush thickness (from 58 to 110 nm). The resultant BBBs show tunable thickness up to 300 nm and high grafting density (σ) with 0.42 chains/nm2. The synthetic procedure of POx BBBs can be further simplified by using SI‐CuCRP with POx molecular brush as macromonomer (Mn = 536 g/mol, PDI = 1.10), which results in BBBs of 60 nm‐thick with well‐defined molecular structure. Both procedures are significantly superior to the state of art approaches for the synthesis of POx BBBs, which are promising to design bio‐functional surfaces.
Brush structures directly anchored to ion beam treated polymer surfaces without linker

Abstract:A brush structure is an interesting object for future applications in medical and electronic devices. Usual substrate for the brushes is silicon wafer with linker molecules. In present study an ion beam treatment of polymer was used for attachment of brush structures without liker molecules. The goal of the study was a fabrication of carbonized active substrate and a direct attachment of different brush molecules. The carbonised coating on silicon wafer has been prepared from ion beam implanted polystyrene coating and characterised with AFM, XPS, ESR, Raman, FTIR and ellipsometry measurements. The brush structures based on polystyrene and polyacrylamide backbone with thiol, amine and carboxyl end groups have been synthesised on the carbonised substrates. The brush structures have been characterised with ellipsometry, XPS, FTIR and AFM. The swollen brush shows a thickness phase transition with temperature rise. The attachment of the brush structures is based on free radical reactions on the carbonised surface. The effect of impurity of the brush polymer was found significant. Thus, the brush structures of broad kinds of the end groups can be synthesised on the carbonised substrates without a linker.

Abstract:The synthesis of surface-grafted polymers with variable functionality requires the careful selection of polymerization methods that also enable spatially controlled grafting, which is crucial for the fabrication of, e.g., nano (micro) sensor or nanoelectronic devices. The development of versatile, simple, economical, and eco-friendly synthetic strategies is important for scaling up the production of such polymer brushes. We have recently shown that poly (3-methylthienyl methacrylate) (PMTM) and poly (3-trimethylsilyl-2-propynyl methacrylate) (PTPM) brushes with pendant thiophene and acetylene groups, respectively, could be used for the production of ladder-like conjugated brushes that are potentially useful in the mentioned applications. However, the previously developed syntheses of such brushes required the use of high volumes of reagents, elevated temperature, or high energy UV-B light. Therefore, we present here visible light-promoted metal-free surface-initiated ATRP (metal-free SI-ATRP) that allows the economical synthesis of PMTM and PTPM brushes utilizing only microliter volumes of reaction mixtures. The versatility of this approach was shown by the formation of homopolymers but also the block copolymer conjugated brushes (PMTM and PTPM blocks in both sequences) and patterned films using TEM grids serving as photomasks. A simple reaction setup with only a monomer, solvent, commercially available organic photocatalyst, and initiator decorated substrate makes the synthesis of these complex polymer structures achievable for non-experts and ready for scaling up.

Abstract:Responsive polymer brushes are a category of polymer brushes that are capable of conformational and chemical changes in response to external stimuli. They offer unique opportunities for the control of bio−nano interactions due to the precise control of chemical and structural parameters such as the brush thickness, density, chemistry, and architecture. The design of responsive brushes at the surface of nanomaterials for theranostic applications has developed rapidly. These coatings can be generated from a very broad range of nanomaterials, without compromising their physical, photophysical, and imaging properties. Although the use of responsive brushes for nanotheranostic remains in its early stages, in this review, the aim is to present how the systems developed to date can be combined to control sensing, imaging, and controlled delivery of therapeutics. The recent developments for such design and associated methods for the synthesis of responsive brushes are discussed. The responsive behaviors of homo polymer brushes and brushes with more complex architectures are briefly reviewed, before the applications of responsive brushes as smart delivery systems are discussed. Finally, the recent work is summarized on the use of responsive polymer brushes as novel biosensors and diagnostic tools for the detection of analytes and biomarkers.

Abstract:Surface-grafting polymer brushes (SPB), which are used in a versatile technique to easily realize surface modifications, can be commonly used to change the inherent surface physical/chemical properties of materials. In particular, producing functional polymer brushes with well-defined chemical configurations, densities, architectures, and thicknesses on a material surface has become increasingly important in many fields. Achieving such goals is highly dependent on the progress of novel surface-grafting strategies, which are commonly based on surface-initiated polymerization (SIP) methods. On the other hand, practical applications have been given more attention since the SPB technique enables the engineering of materials with diverse functions. This review reports some new grafting strategies for generating polymer brush layers and then systematically summarizes research advances in the application of polymer brush-modified materials in multiple fields. Correspondingly, some necessary challenges of the SPB technique are unreservedly pointed out, with consideration given to its real applications in the future. The aim of this article is to tell readers how to engineer functional materials through SPB techniques and what can be done with polymer brushes in the future.

Abstract:Self‐templating copolymerization proves to be an effective method for synthesis of conductive surface‐grafted polymer brushes. The process involves copolymerization of pendant thiophene groups in poly(3‐methylthienyl methacrylate) brushes with free 3‐methylthiophene monomers providing robust nanocoatings that exhibit high conductivity even after prolonged storage at ambient conditions. The generation of mixed brushes by co‐grafting poly(sodium 4‐styrenesulfonate) leads to films with memristive characteristics. An effective synthesis of conductive polymer brushes, i.e., self‐templating surface‐initiated copolymerization (ST‐SICP), is developed. It proceeds through copolymerization of pendant thiophene groups in the precursor multimonomer poly(3‐methylthienyl methacrylate) (PMTM) brushes with free 3‐methylthiophene (3MT) monomers leading to PMTM‐co‐P3MT brushes. This approach leads to improved conformational freedom of generated conjugated poly(thiophene)‐based chains and their higher share in the brushes with respect to conjugation of pendant thiophene groups only. As a result, best performing conjugated PMTM‐co‐P3MT brushes demonstrate high ohmic conductivity in both out‐of‐plane and in‐plane direction. Furthermore, thanks to the covalent anchoring as well as intra‐ and intermolecular connections, highly stable and mechanically robust nanocoatings are produced which can survive mechanical cleaning and long‐term storage under ambient conditions. Grafting of ionic poly(sodium 4‐styrenesulfonate) (PSSNa) in between PMTM‐co‐P3MT chains brings new properties to such binary mixed brushes that can operate as thin‐film memristive coating with switchable conductance. It is worth mentioning that the crucial synthetic steps, i.e., grafting of precursor PMTM brushes by surface‐initiated organocatalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (SI‐O‐ATRP) and PSSNa chains by surface‐initiated photoiniferter‐mediated polymerization (SI‐PIMP) are conducted under ambient conditions using only microliter volumes of reagents providing methodology that can be considered for use beyond the laboratory scale.

Abstract:We report size- and shape-controlled polymer brushes based on l-amino acid bioresource and study the role of polymer topology on the enzymatic biodegradation and deep-tissue penetration under in vitro and in vivo. For this purpose, l-tyrosine-based propargyl-functionalized monomer is tailor-made and polymerized via solvent-free melt polycondensation strategy to yield hydrophobic and clickable biodegradable poly(ester-urethane)s. Postpolymerization click chemistry strategy is applied to make well-defined amphiphilic one-dimensional rodlike and three-dimensional spherical polymer brushes by merely varying the lengths of PEG-azides in the reaction. These core-shell polymer brushes are found to be nontoxic and nonhemolytic and capable of loading clinical anticancer drug doxorubicin and deep-tissue penetrable near-infrared biomarker IR-780. In vitro enzymatic drug-release kinetics and lysotracker-assisted real-time live-cell confocal bioimaging revealed that the rodlike polymer brush is superior than its spherical counterparts for faster cellular uptake and enzymatic biodegradation at the endolysosomal compartments to release DOX at the nucleus. Further, in vivo live-animal bioimaging by IVIS technique established that the IR-780-loaded rodlike polymer brush exhibited efficient deep-tissue penetration ability and emphasized the importance of polymer brush topology control for biological activity. Polymer brushes exhibit good stability in the blood plasma for more than 72 h, they predominately accumulate in the digestive organs like liver and kidney, and they are less toxic to heart and brain tissues. IVIS imaging of cryotome tissue slices of organs confirmed the deep-penetrating ability of the polymer brushes. The present investigation opens opportunity for bioderived and biodegradable polymer brushes as next-generation smart drug-delivery scaffolds.

Abstract:Global trends of infant and child mortality have decreased over the last 30 years, while the proportion of malaria deaths has progressively increased due to the deteriorating situation in sub-Saharan Africa. The Global Malaria Control Strategy promoted by WHO has encountered several obstacles to its implementation. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can reduce malaria mortality, but there is still low investment on safe and effective modalities of care delivery at the periphery, where most of the malaria burden exists. Selective vector control (indoor residual spraying and insecticide-treated nets) plays a significant role outside Africa, but its wider use is limited by cost/affordability problems and operational issues (supply, delivery and logistics). Alternative methods such as environmental management and biological control are cost-effective only under very specific epidemiological situations. In most countries forecasting, early detection and containment of malaria epidemics is deficient, and there is separation between the research and control communities, particularly in Africa. Involvement of the internal agencies, strategic investments in capacity building and institutional networking are needed to strengthen capacity for malaria and research in the countries. The major responsibility is to guide the expenditure made by the communities (which far out-weigh the limited share of national health budgets) towards the most cost-effective approaches to reduce malaria mortality and morbidity.
