Abstract:Protective footwear is necessary for preventing injurious slips and falls in winter conditions. Valid methods for assessing footwear slip resistance on winter surfaces are needed in order to evaluate footwear and outsole designs. The purpose of this study was to utilise a method of testing winter footwear that was ecologically valid in terms of involving actual human testers walking on realistic winter surfaces to produce objective measures of slip resistance. During the experiment, eight participants tested six styles of footwear on wet ice, on dry ice, and on dry ice after walking over soft snow. Slip resistance was measured by determining the maximum incline angles participants were able to walk up and down in each footwear-surface combination. The results indicated that testing on a variety of surfaces is necessary for establishing winter footwear performance and that standard mechanical bench tests for footwear slip resistance do not adequately reflect actual performance. Practitioner Summary: Existing standardised methods for measuring footwear slip resistance lack validation on winter surfaces. By determining the maximum inclines participants could walk up and down slopes of wet ice, dry ice, and ice with snow, in a range of footwear, an ecologically valid test for measuring winter footwear performance was established.

Abstract:Falls on icy surfaces are among the top causes of injuries for workers exposed to the outdoor environment. Our recent field study showed that a new generation of winter footwear incorporating composite outsoles was able to reduce slips and falls on icy surfaces by 68% and 78%, respectively. The widespread adoption of this type of footwear may lead to substantial reductions in pain, suffering and costs of fall-related injuries. However, these composite materials are sensitive to wear and abrasion, which makes it likely that their slip-resistance performance may degrade with use. The goal of this pilot study was to determine the extent to which the slip-resistance of two types of winter footwear with composite outsoles changed as they wore down with real-world use. Seven participants were recruited for this study and were asked to walk 100K steps with their assigned footwear. Tread depth and slip-resistance performance (using the Maximum Achievable Angle test) were measured at baseline and again after each 25K-step interval up to 100K. Our results showed that the slip-resistance performance of the test footwear dropped significantly after the 75K and 100K step intervals compared to baseline. In addition, significant changes in tread depth were found after only 25K steps. These findings indicate that the performance of this type of footwear degrades relatively quickly with real-world use. Therefore, larger scale study of the slip-resistance of winter footwear with composite outsoles is needed and members of the public should be made aware of the potential loss of slip-resistance of these products.

Abstract:The use of slip-resistant winter footwear is crucial for the prevention of slips and falls on ice and snow. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate a mechanical testing method to determine footwear slip resistance on wet and dry ice surfaces and to compare it with the human-centred test method introduced by researchers at KITE (Knowledge, Innovation, Talent, Everywhere)-Toronto Rehabilitation Institute-University Health Network. Phase 1 of this study assessed the repeatability and reproducibility of the mechanical method by evaluating ten different occupational winter boots using two SATRA Slip resistance testers (STM 603, SATRA Technology Centre, Kettering, UK). One tester is located in Toronto and one in Montreal. These boots were chosen based on the needs of the IRSST (Institut de Recherche Robert-Sauvé en Santé et en Sécurité du Travail, Montréal, Quebec, Canada), who were primarily interested in providing safe winter footwear for police, firefighters and municipal workers. In Phase 2, the results of the human-centred test approach were compared with the mechanical results. In Phase 3, two of these boots with conflicting results from the previous phases were tested using a second human-centred method. In Phase 1, the mechanical testing results obtained in the two labs showed a high linear correlation (>0.94) and good agreement on both ice surfaces; however, they revealed a bias (~0.06) between the two labs on the dry ice condition. The mechanical and human-centred tests (phase 2) were found to be better correlated in the wet ice condition (R = 0.95) compared to the dry ice condition (R = 0.34). Finally, the rating of the footwear slip resistance based on the number of slips counted in phase 3 was consistent with the rating by the human-centred test method (phase 2), but not the mechanical method (phase 1). The findings of this study provide a better understanding of the limitations of the SATRA ice tray for measuring footwear slip resistance and demonstrate that the mechanical method must be further refined to make it more comparable to the human-centred methods to achieve better agreement with real-world performance.

Abstract:Slips and falls on ice are among the common causes of emergency department visits and hospitalizations during the winter season. These injuries are costly and can place a financial burden on healthcare systems and municipalities. Using slip resistant winter footwear is a key factor in reducing the risk of slips and eventually falls. In this study, we developed an Artificial Intelligence model that classifies high and low slip resistant footwear based on images of their outsoles. Our model was trained on a unique dataset which consisted of images of 266 winter footwear outsoles. This dataset included footwear outsoles made from rubber (n = 89), Arctic Grip (n = 101), and Green Diamond material (n = 76). The slip resistance of all footwear samples was tested and rated with a human-centered protocol called the Maximum Achievable Angle test. We applied a transfer learning technique to develop a 2D convolutional neural network to classify the outsoles as having high and low slip resistance. The best classification model used the Xception pre-trained model and obtained an accuracy and F1-score of 0.85 and 0.89, respectively. The AUC-ROC (Area Under the Curve for Receiver Operating Characteristic) was also 0.91. Our results suggest that the proposed model properly identified high and low slip resistant winter footwear outsoles. Our findings also confirmed that the footwear's outsole tread pattern and material directly impact the footwear's slip resistance quality. The proposed model will help footwear manufacturers to improve their workflow and increase product quality which can ultimately decrease the events of slips and falls.

Abstract:Commercially pure titanium (cpTi), titanium alloys, and steel are often used for dental and orthopedic implants. In these applications titanium is considered the "gold standard." However, tissue reactions around titanium implants and the changing trend to leave orthopedic devices in the body have led to a new examination of the preferred material. This in vitro study tested the behavior of osteoblasts on cpTi, Ti-6Al-7Nb, and stainless steel with surface designs similar to clinical implants. After surface characterization by scanning electron microscopy and profilometry, cell proliferation and the differentiation parameters of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and osteocalcin were measured. For all materials tested, the growth curves showed a similar kinetic. On Ti-6Al-7Nb, ALP activity was significantly lower when compared with steel, and cpTi and did not change over the time. ALP activity increased moderately on steel and cpTi. Osteocalcin levels were higher on both titanium materials than on steel. Based on undisturbed cell growth and the relatively high alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin levels, we suggest that cpTi provides the best biocompatibility with regard to proliferation, in addition to more reliable early and late differentiation markers of human osteoblasts in vitro.
Development and Evaluation of a Slip Detection Algorithm for Walking on Level and Inclined Ice Surfaces

Abstract:Slip-resistant footwear can prevent fall-related injuries on icy surfaces. Winter footwear slip resistance can be measured by the Maximum Achievable Angle (MAA) test, which measures the steepest ice-covered incline that participants can walk up and down without experiencing a slip. However, the MAA test requires the use of a human observer to detect slips, which increases the variability of the test. The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate an automated slip detection algorithm for walking on level and inclined ice surfaces to be used with the MAA test to replace the need for human observers. Kinematic data were collected from nine healthy young adults walking up and down on ice surfaces in a range from 0° to 12° using an optical motion capture system. Our algorithm segmented these data into steps and extracted features as inputs to two linear support vector machine classifiers. The two classifiers were trained, optimized, and validated to classify toe slips and heel slips, respectively. A total of approximately 11,000 steps from 9 healthy participants were collected, which included approximately 4700 slips. Our algorithm was able to detect slips with an overall F1 score of 90.1%. In addition, the algorithm was able to accurately classify backward toe slips, forward toe slips, backward heel slips, and forward heel slips with F1 scores of 97.3%, 54.5%, 80.9%, and 86.5%, respectively.

The effect of tread patterns on slip resistance of footwear outsoles based on composite materials in icy conditions

Abstract:Introduction: Falls on icy surfaces are the leading cause of injuries for outdoor workers. Footwear outsole material and geometrical design parameters are the most significant factors affecting slips-and-falls. Recently, composite materials have been incorporated into outsoles to improve traction, yet the best design parameters are not fully understood. Method: In this effort, based on Taguchi orthogonal array design, 27 outsole prototypes were fabricated with different tread pattern features using our patented composites and tested in a simulated winter condition. Results: An analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that surface area (p = 0.041, Contribution = 15.63%) was the only factor significantly affecting the slip-resistance of our prototypes. The best performance was observed for the maximized surface area covered by our composite material with circular and half circular plugs laid obliquely, mostly in the forefoot area. Practical applications: These findings suggest that some tread design features of composite-based footwear have a great role in affecting slip-resistance properties of composite-based footwear.
The effect of roughness, floor polish, water, oil and ice on underfoot friction: current safety footwear solings are less slip resistant than microcellular polyurethane

Abstract:Research over a period of about 18 years has shown that a microcellular polyurethane known as AP66033 is the most slip-resistant safety footwear soling material on oily and wet surfaces. In recent years it has been replaced in commercially available footwear by a dual density polyurethane (DDP) which has a dense outer layer and a soft microcellular backing. This research programme has compared the slip resistance of AP66033 with DDP and some rubber solings. In addition, data were obtained on the effects of soling and floor roughness, and floor polish on slip resistance. Some data were also obtained for walking on ice. The coefficient of friction (CoF) of the solings was measured on 19 water wet surfaces in three conditions: (I) when the solings were new, (II) following abrasion to create maximum roughness and (III) after polishing. The CoF was measured on four oily surfaces after each of 11 abrasion or polishing treatments. The profound effects of the roughening of all soles and of floor roughness on the CoF were demonstrated for both wet and oily surfaces. The superior slip resistance of AP66033 was confirmed for oily and wet conditions; however, some rubbers not suitable for safety footwear achieved higher CoF values on wet floors. All of the floor polishes reduced the CoF of all floors when contaminated with water. The mean CoF of DDP solings was lower than the mean for AP66033 on wet and oily surfaces. No safety footwear soling provided adequate grip on dry ice and the CoF was reduced by water on the ice. A rubber used for rock climbing footwear was one of the most slip-resistant solings on wet surfaces in the laboratory but recorded the lowest CoF on ice. It is concluded that the incidence of occupational injuries caused by slipping could be reduced by the following: (A) returning to safety footwear soled with the microcellular polyurethane AP66033; (B) abrading all new and smooth footwear solings with a belt sanding machine coated with P100 grit; (C) avoiding the use of floor polish; (D) informing the general public about the poor slip resistance of ordinary footwear on ice and the lowering of slip resistance in cold weather.
Gait Speed with Anti-Slip Devices on Icy Pedestrian Crossings Relate to Perceived Fall-Risk and Balance

Abstract:It is important to find criteria for preventive measures and appropriate assistive devices to reduce pedestrian injuries and increase walking in winter. Reducing the rate of falls on icy surfaces and improving people's ability to safely cross a street in winter conditions by achieving an adequate walking speed, for example, need to be considered. This study explores pedestrian perceptions of fall risk, balance, and footfall transitions while using different designs for anti-slip devices on ice and snow-covered ice and relates these to measures of gait speed and friction. Trials were performed with nine pedestrians testing 19 anti-slip devices on ice and ice covered with snow. Laboratory tests of the dynamic coefficient of friction (DCOF) on plain ice were also performed. The findings suggest that there was conformity in the participants' perceptions of good balance and low fall risk for one-fifth of the devices (three whole-foot designs and one design with built-in spikes). We also found that gait speed on icy pedestrian crossings is related to perceived fall-risk and balance control, but not to DCOF of the anti-slip devices.

Abstract:Slips and falls on ice are common causes of injury in the winter and can result in economic loss. Using slip resistant winter footwear is a key factor in reducing the risk of slips and eventually falls. In this study, we develop a model that classifies footwear outsoles based on how slip resistant they are on icy surfaces. Our dataset consisted of outsole images of 89 winter footwear samples that were previously tested and rated with a human-centred protocol called the Maximum Achievable Angle (MAA). We applied a transfer learning technique where the best classification model used the DenseNet169 pre-trained model and obtained an accuracy and F1-score of 0.93 ± 0.01 and 0.73 ± 0.03, respectively. Our results suggest that the proposed model was able to properly identify high and low slip resistance quality tread patterns. Our findings confirmed that a footwear's tread pattern has a direct impact on its slip resistance. The proposed model will help footwear manufacturers to improve their workflow and increase product quality which can ultimately decrease the events of slips and falls.

Abstract:Slip and falls account for a large share of occupational accidents. Slips are typically initiated when an insufficient amount of friction is present between the shoe and floor surfaces during walking. Shoe tread is thought to enhance the friction by channeling fluid contaminants away from the shoe and floor surface thus mitigating the fluid’s ability to lubricate the two surfaces and reduce friction. This study presents a novel method for evaluating the effectiveness of shoe tread by measuring fluid pressures during simulated slips. Sensors embedded into the floor measured fluid pressure while a robotic slip-tester simulated a human slip. A work shoe with three different tread depths (no, medium and full tread) was tested against a vinyl floor using a diluted (90%) glycerol and diluted detergent (2% detergent, 98% water) contaminant. Fluid pressures were high in the no tread condition but negligible in the other two tread depth conditions for the diluted glycerol and were negligible for all diluted detergent conditions. The no tread (COF: 0.005) also had lower friction coefficient values than treaded conditions (COF: 0.08-0.38). This study suggests that the effectiveness of tread to reduce the lubricating quality of the fluid can be directly measured using a robotic slip-tester and a fluid pressure sensor embedded in the floor. This method has the potential for developing tread depth recommendations and in evaluating the validity of slip-testers to simulate under-shoe conditions.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Slips and falls contribute to occupational injuries and fatalities globally. Both floor slipperiness and floor roughness affect the occurrence of slipping and falling. Investigations on fall-related phenomena are important for the safety and health of workers. OBJECTIVE: The purposes of this study were to: compare the perceived floor slipperiness before and after walking on the floor; compare the perceived floor slipperiness with and without shoes for males and females; discuss the perceived floor roughness based on barefoot walking; and establish regression models to describe the relationship between perceived floor slipperiness and actual friction of the floors. METHODS: Male and female subjects walked on 3 m walkways with or without shoes. The perceived floor slipperiness ratings both before and after their walk were collected. RESULTS: The perceived floor slipperiness both before and after walking were significantly affected by both floor and surface conditions. Gender, floor, surface, and footwear conditions were all significant factors affecting the adjustment of perceived floor slipperiness. The subjects made more adjustment on perceived floor slipperiness rating when they had shoes on than when they were barefooted. CONCLUSION: Regression models were established to describe the relationship between perceived floor slipperiness and floor coefficient of friction. These models may be used to estimate perceived floor slipperiness, or in reverse, the coefficient of friction of the floor, so as to prevent slipping and falling in workplaces.
Decrease of telomere length in thyroid adenomas without telomerase activity.

Abstract:In somatic cells, telomeres shorten with population doubling, thus limiting their capacity to divide. Telomerase, which synthesizes telomeric repeats, can compensate for such shortening. Telomerase activity is known to be absent from most somatic differentiated cells but is present in germline cells, immortal cell lines, or a large majority of malignant tumors. Autonomous thyroid adenomas are benign tumors composed of highly differentiated cells characterized by TSH-independent function and growth. Telomere length and telomerase activity were measured in autonomous and hypofunctioning adenomas and their surrounding tissues. A significant decrease of 3.8+/-1.0 kilobases (kb) was observed in the length of the terminal restriction fragments (TRF) in 12 autonomous adenomas (8.6+/-1.1 kb), compared with the TRF length of their surrounding tissues (12.4+/-1.6 kb). The same kind of decrease, 3.5+/-1.2 kb, was also observed in 16 hypofunctioning adenomas (12.3+/-1.7 kb in surrounding tissue and 8.8+/-1.6 kb in the adenomas). No telomerase activity was detected either in the 12 autonomous adenomas studied or in most of the quiescent tissues (10 of 12). Most of the hypofunctioning adenomas tested (15 of 16) did not display telomerase activity. These results suggest that the cells have undergone a higher number of cell divisions in the adenomas than in the surrounding tissue. Moreover, there is a larger spread of the TRF length distribution in autonomous adenomas than in the collateral tissue. This could reflect the heterogeneity in proliferation status of the cells in the nodule, some of which have reached the end of their life span, whereas others are still proliferating (but with no malignant potential for the autonomous adenomas). In conclusion, benign adenomas exhibit a shorter and more variable telomere length than the normal collateral quiescent tissue, with no telomerase activity to compensate this loss in telomere length.
Medio-lateral and lateral edge friction in indoor sports shoes

Abstract:It has previously been speculated that the occurrence and severity of lateral ankle sprain injuries is linked to excessive shoe–surface friction. Especially, the lateral parts of the shoe outsole are suggested to play an important role in such scenarios but have never been quantified in a systematic manner. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the variation of friction of indoor sport shoes with foot orientation and compare it to the traditional industry forefoot friction test standard. We modified the ISO:13287:2019 test for footwear slip resistance and positioned the shoe on its forefoot and lateral edge while replicating medio-lateral movements similar to previously reported ankle sprain incidents. All tests were conducted on an indoor vinyl/sport surface. The results from the modified setups were compared to those following the anterior-posterior orientated ISO standard. Medio-lateral friction was on average 17% lower and lateral edge friction 24% lower than anterior-posterior forefoot friction ( p < .001). However, linear regression showed that the forefoot test could only explain 36% and 35% of the variation in medio-lateral and edge friction. This suggests that motion-specific tests are necessary to determine footwear friction properties meaningfully. These findings could have important implications for future research and product testing in the field of footwear friction, safety and injury prevention.

Abstract:Ergonomics in Design, Ahead of Print. Soldiers and firefighters have a hazardous job profile. They have worn heavy clothing that reduces body's natural movability. In these circumstances, our objectives are to explore the effect of three layers light-weight clothing system: on kinetic/kinematic changes during different maneuverability, six gait phases, and on different body joints. We assessed four different exerted forces, six gait phases, and joint angles of five body movements amongst 63 trials of Indian soldiers by standardized protocol of Ergomaster 4.6 software. No significant changes were observed except in sitting position and shearing force of gait pattern. Hence, it allows for natural biomechanics and gait pattern.
Physiological and Psychophysical Responses in Handling Maximum Acceptable Weights under Different Footwear–floor Friction Conditions

Abstract:A study on combined manual materials-handling tasks performed on floors under three friction levels was conducted. Eight male subjects participated in the study. The maximum acceptable weight of handling, including lifting. carrying for 3 in, lowering, and walking 3 m back at twice per minute was determined. The subject then performed the same tasks for 10 min. Heart rate, Vo(2), energy efficiency, perceived sense of slip, and rating of perceived exertion for whole body strain were measured. The results showed that the effects of friction level on the maximum acceptable weights of handling, perceived sense of slip, Vo(2),, and energy efficiency were statistically significant (p <= 0.0006). As the friction level increased from low to high, the maximum acceptable weights of handling increased from 8.15 to 9.34 kg. The energy efficiency on the low friction condition (12.58 kg/L/min) was significantly lower than those of the medium (15.73 kg/L/min) and high (15.38 kg/L/min) friction conditions. The perceived sense of slip was the highest (5.44) on the low-friction condition, followed by the medium-friction condition (3.58), and last the high-friction condition (1.84). The implication of this study was that friction level should be regarded as one of the major environmental factors in designing MMH tasks as it affected both physiological and psychophysical responses of the Subjects. Low-friction footwear-floor interface should be avoided as it resulted in not only high scores of perceived sense of slip but also in low-energy efficiency utilized in the body. Abstract:The present Comité Européen de Normalisation (CEN) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards for safety, protective and occupational footwear EN ISO 20344-20347 classify footwear as cold protective by a pass/fail test where the limits are set for an allowed 10 degrees C temperature drop inside the footwear during 30 min at a temperature gradient of approximately 40 degrees C. It is questionable if a simple pass/fail test of this kind provides approved footwear that really protects the feet from cooling in exposures ranging from temperatures at +18 degrees C to as low as or even lower than -50 degrees C. This study selected for testing some professional footwear that could certainly not be considered as cold protective. Some footwear that could be used in cold was selected with as low insulation as the not cold-intended footwear. Also, a boot intended for cold was selected to be tested according to a modified standard at a temperature gradient of 70 degrees C. The footwear selection was based on insulation measurements with a thermal foot model. All footwear did pass the test. Although it is clear for the user that a sandal, a mesh shoe or a thin textile shoe is not cold protective, it is not as clear that an item of safety footwear, that has as low insulation as those mentioned above, could be classified as cold protective according to the present standards. Because of this, the user might have a deceptive feeling of safety and may be exposed to higher risks. As practically all professional footwear may pass this cold test, then the method/requirements should be radically changed or such a test should be removed from the standards.
Gait kinetics impact shoe tread wear rate

Abstract:Background: Adequate footwear is an important factor for reducing the risk of slipping; as shoe outsoles wear down, friction decreases, and slip and fall risk increases. Wear theory suggests that gait kinetics may influence rate of tread wear. Research question: Do the kinetics of walking (i.e., the shoe-floor force interactions) affect wear rate? Methods: Fourteen participants completed dry walking trials during which ground reaction forces were recorded across different types of shoes. The peak normal force, shear force, and required coefficient of friction (RCOF) were calculated. Participants then wore alternating pairs of shoes in the workplace each month for up to 24 months. A pedometer was used to track the distance each pair of shoes was worn and tread loss was measured. The wear rate was calculated as the volumetric tread loss divided by the distance walked in the shoes. Three, mixed linear regression models were used to assess the impact of peak normal force, shear force, and RCOF on wear rate. Results: Wear rate was positively associated with peak RCOF and with peak shear force, but was not significantly related to peak normal forces. Significance: The finding that shear forces and particularly the peak RCOF are related to wear suggests that a person's gait characteristics can influence wear. Therefore, individual gait kinetics may be used to predict wear rate based on the fatigue failure shoe wear mechanism.
