Abstract:Experimental and theoretical methods were used to study newly synthesized thiophene-pi-conjugated donor-acceptor compounds, which were found to exhibit efficient intramolecular charge-transfer emission in polar solvents with relatively large Stokes shifts and strong solvatochromism. To gain insight into the solvatochromic behavior of these compounds, the dependence of the spectra on solvent polarity was studied on the basis of Lippert-Mataga models. We found that intramolecular charge transfer in these donor-acceptor systems is significantly dependent on the electron-withdrawing substituents at the thienyl 2-position. The dependence of the absorption and emission spectra of these compounds in methanol on the concentration of trifluoroacetic acid was used to confirm intramolecular charge-transfer emission. Moreover, the calculated absorption and emission energies, which are in accordance with the experimental values, suggested that fluorescence can be emitted from different geometric conformations. In addition, a novel S(2) fluorescence phenomenon for some of these compounds was also be observed. The fluorescence excitation spectra were used to confirm the S(2) fluorescence. We demonstrate that S(2) fluorescence can be explained by the calculated energy gap between the S(2) and S(1) states of these molecules. Furthermore, nonlinear optical behavior of the thiophene-pi-conjugated compound with diethylcyanomethylphosphonate substituents was predicted in theory.

Abstract:Charge-transfer (CT) state is becoming a useful excited state to design next-generation luminescence materials for high-performance organic light-emitting diode (OLED). However, strong CT state usually causes serious decrease in photoluminescence (PL) efficiency due to the small overlap between HOMO and LUMO. In order to harvest both high exciton utilization and high PL efficiency in fluorescent OLEDs, figuring out the strategy of fine modification of CT component in excited state through structural modulation is important. In this work, four donor–acceptor structure triphenylamine (TPA) - acridine (AC) isomers (TPA-9AC, TPA-1AC, TPA-2AC and TPA-3AC) were designed and synthesized to investigate structure-property relationship between isomerization effect and excited state properties. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and solvatochromic absorption, emission and photoluminescence decay spectra are carried out for the deep understanding of their emissive state character. The four isomers exhibit gradually increased PL efficiency from low-polarity hexane to medium-polarity tetrahydrofuran (THF), which could be assigned to the formation of hybridized local and charge-transfer (HLCT) states and effectively suppressed non-radiative transition arised from acridine in medium-polarity solvents. Among four isomers, TPA-3AC achieved the best EL performance, due to the proper LE and CT compositions in the emissive state, demonstrating that isomerization of donor and acceptor functional moieties is an effective approach for structural modification for high-efficiency fluorescent OLED emitters.
Dithia[3.3]paracyclophane Core: a Versatile Platform for Fine Triplet State Tuning and Through Space TADF Emission.

Abstract:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) based on through-space donor and acceptor interactions constitute a recent and promising approach to develop efficient TADF emitters. Novel TADF isomers using a dithia[3.3]-paracyclophane building block as a versatile 3D platform to promote through-space interactions are presented. Such a 3D platform allows to bring together the D and A units into close proximity and to probe the effect of their orientation, contact site and distance on their TADF emission properties. This study provides evidence that the dithia[3.3]paracyclophane core is a promising platform to control intramolecular through-space interactions and obtain an efficient TADF emission with short reverse-intersystem crossing (RISC) lifetimes. In addition, this study demonstrates that this design can tune the energy levels of the triplet states and leads to an upconversion from (CT)-C-3 to (LE)-L-3 that promotes faster and more efficient RISC to the (CT)-C-1 singlet state.

Abstract:Understanding of relationship between structure and property of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials is essential for developing efficient TADF materials. To investigate the substituent effect of electron donors on luminescent properties of TADF materials, a series of single crystals based on triphenylamine (TPA)/anthraquinone (AQ) hybrids namely 1-TPA-AQ, 2-TPA-AQ, 1,8-2TPA-AQ, 2,6-2TPA-AQ have been prepared in this work. Interestingly, it is demonstrated that the substituent site of TPA unit has an important impact on the conformation of AQ for the first time. The planarity of the AQ units in these four molecules is in the order 2,6-2TPA-AQ > 2-TPA-AQ ≈ 1-TPA-AQ > 1,8-2TPA-AQ, which is associated with the molecule symmetry. In addition, intermolecular interactions in these crystals are also investigated. In α-substituted AQ derivatives (1-TPA-AQ and 1,8-2TPA-AQ) typical π–π intermolecular interactions may account for their normal TADF but weak emission in solid state. In contrast, β-substituted AQ derivatives (2-TPA-AQ and 2,6-2TPA-AQ) display weak intermolecular interactions, which are beneficial to restricting molecular motions and to suppressing the non-radiative decay, resulting in efficient TADF and aggregation-induced emission properties simultaneously.

Effects of Substitution with Donor–Acceptor Groups on the Properties of Tetraphenylethene Trimer: Aggregation-Induced Emission, Solvatochromism, and Mechanochromism

Abstract:Luminescent materials with aggregation-induced emission (ME) property have attracted considerable interests for their promising applications in light-emitting and display devices and fluorescent probes for chemo- and biosensors. Tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivatives are the most attractive species for their notable AIE performance, facile synthesis, and flexible structure modification. To study the effects of donor and acceptor substitutions and extend the applications of TPE-based materials, three TPE kindred, TTPE, BTPEFN, and BATPEFN, are employed. TTPE film displays efficient green fluorescence (lambda(em), = 494 nm, Phi(F) = 100%), evident AIE characteristic (alpha(AIE) 154), and reversible mechanochromism by grinding-fuming: from blue (lambda(em), = 472 nm) to green emission (lambda(em) = 505 nm). Replacing two phenyls by two cyano (A) groups on the central TPE moiety derives BTPEFN, whose film shows efficient orange fluorescence (lambda(em) = 575 nm, Phi(F) = 100%) and evident ATE (alpha(AIE) = 13). The mechanochromic behavior of BTPEFN (from yellow to orange emission, lambda(em) from 541 to 563 nm) is reversible by repeating both the grinding-fuming and grinding-annealing processes. The cyano groups bestow BTPEFN with evident intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) property, the emission color can be tuned from green to red-orange by changing solvent from hexane to THF, while the emission of TTPE shows much less response to solvent polarity. Cyanos also endow BTPEFN with better self-assemble ability in proper conditions, and the obtained regular microribbons emit bright green fluorescence. Further decoration of BTPEFN with N,N-diethyamino (D) groups results in BATPEFN. Due to the cooperative effects of D and A groups, BATPEFN shows dramatic red-shifted fluorescence (lambda(em) = 713 nm), evident ICT process, and enhanced solvatochromism (from red to infrared).

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is a unique photo-physical phenomenon and has become an emerging and hot research area. With the enthusiastic efforts paid by researchers, hundreds of AIE-active luminogens (AIEgens) have been generated but heterocyclic AIEgens are rarely reported. Recently, we enriched the family of AIEgens and reported a pyrazine-based AIEgen of tetraphenylpyrazine (TPP), which could be facilely functionalized by a post-synthetic strategy. In this work, we further expanded the TPP-based AIE system by covalently attaching one, two or four electron-donating triphenylamine moieties to the TPP core via Suzuki coupling, and TPP-TPA, TPP-2TPA and TPP-4TPA were produced, respectively. Thanks to their donor-pi-acceptor structures, these luminogens exhibit multifunctional properties, such as excellent thermal stability (up to 504 degrees C), large molar absorptivity, bright emission in the solid state (quantum yields up to 35.2%), solvatochromism, and high two-photon absorption cross-sections (up to 480 GM). Furthermore, using TPP-TPA as the emitting layer, a triple-layer device was fabricated and a turn-on voltage, maximum luminance, current efficiency, power efficiency, and external quantum efficiency of 3.7 V, 17 459 cd m(-2), 5.49 cd A(-1), 3.18 lm W-1 and 2.88% were realized, respectively. These results indicate a huge potential to develop high-tech applications based on these TPP-based AIEgens.
Understanding Solid-State Solvation-Enhanced Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Using a Descriptor-Tuned Screened Range-Separated Functional

Abstract:An efficient computational protocol suitable for both solutions and solid films can accelerate the development of efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters aimed at practical application in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). By employing the localized orbital locator (LOL), we establish an efficient descriptor-tuning methodology for the range-separated (RS) and screened range-separated (SRS) functionals with only one single-point calculation. This scheme provides good predictions for 28 charge transfer (CT)-type TADF emitters. Moreover, in comparison to the experimental data, the scheme presents a mean absolute deviation of 0.09 eV for the absorption energies of the lowest excited singlet state (E-VA(S-1)) in polarizable continuum model (PCM) solution and of 0.10 eV for the energy difference between the lowest excited singlet and triplet states (Delta E-ST) under static solid-state polarization. Importantly, our results indicate that a significantly polarized S-1 is key to realizing the so-called solid-state solvation-enhanced (SSSE) TADF, which is well captured through the screened RS functionals combined with LOL tuning (SLOL tuning). Compared with standard ionization potential (IP) tuning, our scheme significantly reduces the computational cost of the prediction of singlet- and triplet-transition energies for CT molecules. It also provides a reliable approach to evaluate the practical TADF character influenced by solid-state solvation in amorphous organic thin films.
Intramolecular exciplex-typed molecule based on a stereoscopic V-shaped aromatic macrocycle and investigation of host-dependence of exciton utilization

Abstract:Through-space charge transfer (TSCT) has been increasingly utilized for the design of efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters. TSCT molecular skeletons with spatially and electronically confined D/A subunits can provide a small Delta E-ST, and also ease for fine control of CT properties within a single molecule. However so far TSCT-TADF molecules have not been fully investigated. Herein, we report a new ortho-position molecular pattern for TSCT-TADF design, using a stereoscopic V-shaped aromatic macrocycle of electron-deficient oxacalix[2] arene [2] triazine to "clip" the electron-rich triphenylamine unit. The new emitter OC2A2T-TPA exhibits a small Delta E-ST of 18 meV, and the OLED device that uses high-energy-level host DPEPO realizes the first-time electroluminescence application of OC2A2T-type macrocyclic compounds by achieving an impressive external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 14.6 %. Further host-dependence investigation reveals that OC2A2T-TPA actually behaves like an intramolecular exciplex, exhibiting high exciton utilization once its high-lying locally excited (LE) states on D/A could be sensitized first in the case of DPEPO host, otherwise low exciton utilization in the case of lower-energy-level mCP host. This work opens a way to enrich TSCT-TADF design and clarifies the importance to involve the high-lying LE states in the energy transfer routes for high-efficiency intramolecular-exciplex molecules.

Abstract:A series of novel zinc-salophen (salophen = N, N′-phenylenebis(salicylimine)) complexes (Zn-1–4) with electron donor–acceptor (D–A) structure were synthesized and characterized using a triphenylamine structure as the electron donor. Zn-salophen complexes with the same substituent sites have been reported to exhibit significant CT properties. The design of the D–A structure and the increase in the number of benzene rings to increase the length of bridging groups have led to a reduction in the energy difference between charge separation singlet and triplet states, resulting in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) under light irradiation. The ability has been enhanced (in terms of the production of singlet oxygen (1O2), compared with Zn-salophen, Zn-4 is 1.58 times higher). This method has been reported to enhance the intersystem crossing process of compounds, thereby enabling them to reach a triple excited state, but the generation of ROS has not been studied. Although the enhancement is not very significant, it has expanded the medical application prospects of these types of complexes and has provided a new strategy to enhance the production of ROS.

Abstract:A series of symmetrical donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) structured organic molecules (LD1-15) with a methoxy substituted triphenylamine (MeO-TPA) as terminal electron donor and various benzoheterocycle as central electron acceptors have been designed and synthesized. The photophysical and electrochemical properties were investigated systematically. All these chromophores exhibit significant absorption in visible region with different intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) interactions, which is arising from the electron withdrawing properties of the acceptors and the electron donating properties of the triphenylamine. Electron withdrawing core engineering such as increasing the electron withdrawing ability and extending the conjugated system can cause strengthened ICT interactions and red-shifted absorption. The theoretical calculations further demonstrate that the ICT transition for these molecules is dominated by the transition from HOMO to LUMO. The findings could provide a guidance for understanding the structure-property relationship of D-A-D structured triphenylamine chromophores and developing new functional materials.

Abstract:Inspired by the excellent photochemical characteristics exhibited by salicylaldehyde azine (SAA) derivatives, our current endeavour primarily revolves around delving into the intricacies of photo-induced excited state reactions for its electron-donating and electron-withdrawing moieties derivatives (i.e. CN-SAA-CN, CN-SAA-TPA and TPA-SAA-TPA). Our simulations reveal push–pull-substituted-dependent photoexcitation that could significantly affect excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reaction for SAA derivatives. Constructing potential energy surfaces (PESs), we unveil the ultrafast ESIPT mechanism due to the low potential barriers. Additionally, by comparing the differences of barriers among CN-SAA-CN, CN-SAA-TPA and TPA-SAA-TPA, we present regulative manner for SAA derivatives by substituting electron-donating and electron-withdrawing moieties. We sincerely anticipate that the modulation of push–pull substitutions on excited state behaviours will pave the way for ground-breaking advancements in luminescent materials.

Abstract:Understanding functional group modulation of electronic structure and excitation is pivotal to the design of organic small molecules (OSMs) for photoelectric applications. In this work, we employed density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations to explore the unique absorption character of four triphenylamine photosensitizers. The various conformations were investigated given the multiple single bonds in the compounds, and the resemblance in electronic structure of different conformations is affirmed because the coplanarity and consequent long-range conjugation is maintained regardless of the orientation of the flexible blocks. Six functionals were evaluated and MN15 was found to reproduce successfully over B3LYP, PBE0, M062X, CAM-B3LYP, and ωB97XD the intense secondary absorption peak for the double 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) modified sensitizer. Introduction of EDOT gives rise to a new excited state S4, which is a local excitation constrained in the EDOT substituent triphenylamine block. This new excited state S4, in combination with inherent S2 and S3 derived from prototype molecule TPA-Pyc, jointly contributes to the hump of the secondary absorption peak of ETE-Pyc and finally affects the light-harvesting ability of dye-sensitized TiO2 photoanode. The current findings provide instructive reflections into the rational design of OSMs with good light-harvest ability.

Abstract:Through-space charge transfer (TSCT)-based thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials have attracted widespread attention due to their great potential in simultaneously possessing small singlet-triplet splitting energy (Δ E ST ) and rapid radiative rate ( k f ), but it remains a great challenge for the rational design of such materials. In this work, we perform a theoretical investigation on the photophysical properties of carbazole-based TSCT TADF materials both in solvent and solid phase using the polarizable continuum model and the combined quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics method to rationalize their experimental performance difference and reveal the molecular design principles. The results indicate that the molecules with gradually enhanced planarity of donor (D) or/and acceptor (A) units exhibit decreased distance and enhanced intramolecular interactions between D and A units originated from the intermolecular interactions of compact molecular arrangement, leading to favorable radiative rate process in solid phase compared with the situation in toluene. And the enhancement of planarity of D and A units significantly restricts the molecular stretching and rotation vibrations and decreases the non-radiative processes, which mainly contributes to the improved performance of the molecules. Moreover, such TSCT-based molecules show an obvious separation of the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital distributions, which is beneficial to achieving small Δ E ST values. These theoretical understandings could give an in-depth physical insight into the structure-property relationship of such TSCT-based materials, providing quasi-planar controlled strategies for the exploration of high-performance TADF materials.

Abstract:Two isomeric [5,6]-pyrrolidine-I(h)-Sc(3)N@C(80) electron donor-acceptor conjugates containing triphenylamine (TPA) as the donor system were synthesized. Electrochemical and photophysical studies of the novel conjugates were made and compared with those of their C(60) analogues, in order to determine (i) the effect of the linkage position (N-substituted versus 2-substituted pyrrolidine) of the donor system in the formation of photoinduced charge separated states, (ii) the thermal stability toward the retro-cycloaddition reaction, and (iii) the effect of changing C(60) for I(h)-Sc(3)N@C(80) as the electron acceptor. It was found that when the donor is connected to the pyrrolidine nitrogen atom, the resulting dyad produces a significantly longer lived radical pair than the corresponding 2-substituted isomer for both the C(60) and I(h)-Sc(3)N@C(80) dyads. In addition to that, the N-substituted TPA-I(h)-Sc(3)N@C(80) dyad has much better thermal stability than the 2-substituted one. Finally, the I(h)-Sc(3)N@C(80) dyads have considerably longer lived charge separated states than their C(60) analogues, thus approving the advantage of using I(h)-Sc(3)N@C(80) instead of C(60) as the acceptor for the construction of fullerene based donor-acceptor conjugates. These findings are important for the design and future application of I(h)-Sc(3)N@C(80) dyads as materials for the construction of plastic organic solar cells.

Abstract:A tetraphenylethene (TPE) functionalized cationic pillarplarene (CWP5-TPE) was successfully synthesized, and the intramolecular rotation of the TPE motif was restricted via cationic pillar[5jarene-based host guest recognition-mediated supramolecular self-assembly in water, resulting in the efficient enhancement of fluorescence emission based on the aggregation induced emission (AIE) mechanism. CWP5-TPE self-assembled into nanoribbons while the host guest inclusion complex formed into supramolecular amphiphile nanoparticles in water. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Spin-orbit charge transfer intersystem crossing and thermal activation delayed fluorescence (TADF) studies of compact orthogonal anthraquinone phenothiazine derivatives

Abstract:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) in compact electron donor-acceptor dyads has attracted great attention attributed to their potential application of organic light-emitting diodes. However, the lack of understanding of the microscopic mechanisms of this phenomenon hinders the design strategies for the effective TADF materials. In this work, we systematically compared their TADF mechanism of three compact dyads with electron donor phenothiazine (PTZ) and acceptor anthraquinone (AQ) directly connected by a single C─N bond (AQ-PTZ, AQ-PTZ-O, and AQ-PTZ-O2) by means of quantum chemical calculations in conjunction with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. It turns out that three targeted molecules for TADF are identified dependent on the relative energetic positions of the charge-transfer excited states, 1CT/ 3CT and the local triplet state 3LE states. In the most TADF-active molecules, AQ-PTZ-O and AQ-PTZ-O2, structure deformation of excited states is suppressed by oxidation of the PTZ unit, leading to the small relaxation energy and the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) energy barrier, as well as 3LE is on-resonance with the CT states, thus giving high efficiency RISC. Analyses of the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) parameters have confirmed that the electron spin polarized (ESP) patterns of T1(1LE) for AQ-PTZ-O and AQ-PTZ-O2 is AEAEAE (A, absorption; E, emission) with a preferential population of TX and TZ, which is characteristic for ISC mediated by SOC interactions. Namely, the primary population mechanism of singlet excited state is a spin-orbit charge-transfer RISC due to having perpendicular π system. Their D values are expected to be positive, and display a more "disk-like" spin density distribution and oblate; the calculated RISC rates also support these views. These results provide the new gateways for designing effective TADF materials and studying TADF mechanisms.

Abstract:The studies on charge transfer (CT) complex formed by 4,4,4′′-tris(N-carbazolyl)-triphenylamine (TCTA) and 1,3,5-tris(N-phenylbenzimidazol-2-yl) benzene (TPBi) were carried out by experiment and simulation calculations. Experimentally, exciplex-forming in TCTA:TPBi mixture is observed and electroplex is formed for TCTA/TPBi bi-layer structure. The density functional theory via DMol 3 package was performed to explore the geometrical structures, stability, and electronic structures of the complexes. The calculation results demonstrate that geometrically stable structure of the complex is assumed to enable electroplex-forming because the molecular planes of donor and acceptor are separated by 5.5 Å. However, the formation of exciplex requires a small intermolecular separation of below 4 Å, which is relatively unstable for TCTA−TPBi complex and has to be driven by an external force. The requisition can be fulfilled in TCTA:TPBi mixture due to a reduction of intermolecular interval caused by tight molecular packing and strong intermolecular interaction deriving from mixing. The emission of exciplex species is thereof observed in TCTA:TPBi mixture and analogue electroplex in TCTA/TPBi bi-layer system. The calculated frontier molecular orbitals of the complexes exhibit the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) is positioned on TPBi and the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) on TCTA, inferring that the emission of the CT complexes is originated from electron cross transition between the LUMO of TPBi and HOMO of TCTA. Meanwhile, the greater overlap of the molecular orbitals and larger oscillator strength of lowest-lying singlet excited states manifest that the CT complex in TCTA:TPBi mixture can be more efficiently produced, resulting in better electroluminescent performance, compared to TCTA/TPBi system.
