Abstract:Metasurface antennas (MAs) have been proposed as innovative alternatives to conventional bulky configurations for satellite applications because of their low profile, low cost, and high gain. The general method of surface impedance modulation for designing MAs is complicated, and achieving broad operation bandwidth remains a challenge because of its high dispersion response. We propose a novel and easy technique to control cylindrical surface waves radiated by a phase-tuning metasurface. Simultaneously, this technique exhibits a considerably wide working bandwidth. A detailed analysis of the radiation mechanism is discussed. A left-hand circularly polarized (LHCP) antenna and a right-hand circularly polarized (RHCP) antenna that are based on the phase-tuning metasurface are simulated and measured. The measured fractional 3-dB gain bandwidth and gain are higher than 17% and 15.57 dBi, respectively, which are consistent with the simulated results. Moreover, 30% 3-dB axial ratio is achieved for the LHCP and RHCP antennas. To the best knowledge of the authors, it is for the first time to realize a circularly polarized broadband MA by using the phase-tuning mechanism. The approach can be regarded as a new starting point for antenna design, thereby paving the way for the development of broadband and low-profile antennas for future satellite communication.

Abstract:A metamaterial unit cell with a low refractive index over a wide frequency band is proposed and designed. The effective material parameters of the unit cell are extracted, and the unit cell forms a planar three-layer metamaterial structure used as a superstrate for broadside gain enhancement of a patch antenna at 10 GHz. The proposed superstrate is optimized along with the antenna to enhance its beam-focusing ability, taking into account the oblique wave incidence from the radiation source. Both simulation and measurement of the antenna with the optimized superstrate show that this configuration is able to achieve a broadside gain 70%-80% of the maximum gain from the ideal effective radiation surface.

Abstract:This paper uses a Computer Simulation Technology microwave studio to simulate the performance of a new highdirectivity anisotropic magnetic metamaterial antenna loaded with a frequency-selective surface.Frequency-selective surface with cross-dipole element has a great effect on the directivity,radiation pattern,and gain of such an antenna.The experimental results show that frequency-selective surface（FSS） significantly improve the radiation performance of anisotropic magnetic metamaterial antenna.For example,as a single anisotropic magnetic metamaterial antenna,half power beam width is 4 degrees in the H planes,and the gain of this antenna is 19.5 dBi at 10 GHz,achieving a 2.1 degree increment in half power beam width,and a 7.3 dB gain increment by loading with the FSS reflector.The simulating results are consistent with our experimental results.

Abstract:Metasurfaces, composed of 2-D planar arrays of sub-wavelength metallic or dielectric scatterers, have provided unprecedented freedoms in manipulating electromagnetic (EM) waves upon interfaces. The development of metasurface has always been closely related to antennas. On the one hand, metasurface was developed from reflect arrays/transmit arrays that are used as reflectors/lens of antennas, and most fundamental theories of metasurfaces are directly borrowed from antenna array theories; on the other hand, the development of antennas was flourished and expedited by progresses in metasurfaces. Many emerging antenna configurations have been constructed based on unique functional metasurfaces. In this article, we will review briefly the development roadmap of both metasurfaces and metasurface-based antennas, including antenna-inspired metasurfaces, metasurface-assisted antennas, and metasurface antennas. In particular, the recent fusion of metasurface and antenna as metantenna will bring significant impacts on methodologies of functional metasurface, antenna design, and radio-frequency device miniaturization.

Abstract:To integrate antennas into the curved surface of a mounted platform, a broadband flexible antenna array has been investigated in this letter, which maintains ultra-wideband lower scattering as well. The proposed array features a unique structure, combining two mirror-symmetrical types of metasurface-inspired antenna elements to create a 2 x 2 crossover array. This antenna array effectively reduces radar cross section (RCS) in the ultra-wideband without the need for additional components. Measured results indicate the proposed antenna array achieves a relative operating bandwidth exceeding 84% in both planar and deformed states and with peak gain over 13.3 dBi at 7 GHz. In comparison to a flexible equivalent metallic plane, the proposed antenna array demonstrates a relative 6 dB RCS reduction bandwidth exceeding 100.7% in planar state and over 75% in various deformed states.

Abstract:To adapt to the application of wireless body area network (WBAN), a wearable flexible dual‐band antenna is developed, which has a compact size of 17 × 29 × 0.15 mm3 and a better bandwidth of 61.2% and 43.1% at 2.4 and 5.8 GHz, respectively. The dual‐band characteristic is achieved by slotting technique without changing the contour size. A dual‐band metamaterial structure (MS) is designed to improve radiation performance and reduce the specific absorption rate (SAR) of the proposed antenna. To verify the validity of the MS, we build two simulation human models. The forward gain of the antenna is increased and the SAR is significantly decreased when adding the MS between antenna and human skin. The antenna is designed and fabricated on a flexible substrate, and its performance is verified for both flat and curved configurations. To examine its performance as a wearable antenna, it is measured on a human body. The measurements show an excellent agreement with the simulations. Good performances of designed antenna make it potential to application of the miniaturized wearable devices.
An Offset Surface to Reduce Radar Cross Section for Airborne Antenna Out‐band

Abstract:To meet the needs of modern electronic warfare in better stealth performance of the weapon platform, we design an offset surface with metasurface structure, which greatly reduces the radar cross section for airborne antenna. The relation between surface unit size and attenuation frequency guides the design of offset surface that can work in the L-band. The original strategy performed as cross-array structure that plays well throughout the band at different angles, except 30 degrees to 35 degrees. An undesired reflection occurs at this angle gap. Therefore, we attempted to modify the structure as parallel-array structure with same unit size. The results show that modification performs well at all angles in the passband, which meets the design requirements. We processed an offset surface sample and performed a joint test with an aircraft antenna to verify the superiority of the design.

Abstract:The metasurface technique has been applied to enhancing the gain and directivity of antenna in this paper. The normal metal ground is replaced by one metasurface structure to suppress the higher frequency component transmission. Another similar metasurface structure is put nearer to the antenna to increase gain and enhance directivity further. A low-pass filter with defected ground plane is designed to obtain steeper falling edges and a wider stop band. Then a rectifier circuit is designed for the electromagnetic energy of input terminal converted into a DC output. The three parts of passive circuit make up a complete energy receiving system. The measured results of the system shown that the output voltage stable.

Abstract:A recursive algorithm is proposed to solve the normal equations for bilateral AR models. Since the algorithm is a slight extension of the Levinson-Durbin algorithm to solve the Yule-Walker equations, it is computationally efficient and can be easily incorporated into a computer program. In addition, it can be utilized to determine the order of a symmetric bilateral AR model.

Abstract:A broadband aperture‐coupling patch antenna (ACPA) with improved radiation and scattering performance is proposed and analysed. In order to broaden the operating bandwidth of APCA, parameters of APCA are investigated and optimised. Then, a novel broadband metamaterial absorber (MA) is designed to be coplanar on APCA. Simulated results indicate that MA‐based APCA possess a remarkable RCS reduction and gain enhancement. The RCS reduction is achieved from 3 GHz to 16.0 GHz for the both polarisation, with a maximum reduction of 46.2 dB under x‐polarisation incidence at 8.1 GHz and 21.9 dB under y‐polarisation incidence at 8.7 GHz. The operating bandwidth of MA‐based APCA is also covered by the reduction band, which is from 8.1 GHz to 10.9 GHz. Meanwhile, the gain enhancement is also achieved in the operating band, and the maximum improvement is 2.3 dB at 10.9 GHz. A prototype has been fabricated and measured, and measured results are in agreement with the corresponding simulated results.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel shared-aperture method of electromagnetic metasurface and antenna is proposed to obtain low radar-cross-section (RCS) performance. This method first designs low-RCS metasurface and conventional antenna independently, and then obtains novel low-RCS antenna by combining this metasurface with conventional antenna based on shared-aperture technique. Besides, current analysis and consequent local structure modification are also conducted to guarantee the antenna’s good radiation performance and broadband RCS reduction in the meantime. Using this method, a dual-layer polarization rotation unit cell is first proposed and its broadband working principle is investigated by both theoretical analysis and numerical comparison. Based on this unit cell, a broadband low-RCS metasurface is constructed. Then an initial shared-aperture metasurface antenna is obtained by substituting the middle cells in the metasurface with conventional patch antenna directly. Through careful analysis of surface current in radiation mode, the gain decrease of this metasurface antenna is revealed. On this basis, a limited removing strategy is put forward and some metasurface cells in the antenna is removed with the aid of current analysis. Consequently, an improved shared-aperture metasurface antenna is proposed. (The design flow of this metasurface antenna is displayed in the following Fig. 1) This improved antenna works from 6.3 GHz to 7.48 GHz, which is a bit wider than conventional patch antenna. Its gain is also higher than conventional antenna with the maximum improvement of 1 dB. Meanwhile, apparent RCS reduction is obtained from 6 GHz to 16 GHz for any polarized incident wave, and the reduction peak is larger than 20 dB. Fabrications and measurements are finally conducted. The good agreements of measured results and numerical calculations are achieved. The well-behaved radiation performance and broadband low-RCS property of this metasurface antenna verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Different from most reported design method of low-RCS antenna directly from conventional antenna, the proposed method adopts a reverse thinking and converts the scattering optimization to radiation optimization, realizing the integration of metasurface and antenna, and making the design of low-RCS antenna easier and faster.

Design and Implementation of an X-Band Horn Antenna With a Metamaterial Lens Using 3D Printing Technology

Abstract:This paper presents the design and implementation of an X-band horn antenna, which operates over a frequency range of 7 – 9 GHz for small satellite communication systems in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), employing metamaterials and 3D printing technology. It was fabricated using a polymer-based material through a 3D printer and subsequently coated with copper. The horn antenna with a metamaterial lens (meta lens) and septum polarizer is fabricated as a single structure, eliminating the need for additional mechanical structures and parts for assembly of the antenna. This results in a significant reduction in weight compared to a conventional antenna manufactured using traditional methods. To enhance the directivity of the conical horn antenna, the meta lens horn antenna incorporates a periodic lattice-shaped metamaterial. Additionally, a septum polarizer is integrated to achieve circular polarization. The metamaterial lens used in this paper exhibits Near-Zero Refractive Index (NZRI) characteristics within the operating frequency band. It is positioned inside the conical horn antenna to compensate for the field phase difference between the horn's edge and vertex. This compensation leads to a uniform phase distribution across the aperture, resulting in improved antenna directivity. The simulated and measured results show that the meta lens enhances the gain by over 1 dB within the frequency band of interest compared to the conventional horn of the same size. Furthermore, it exhibits a return loss below 20 dB. The proposed antenna was fabricated as a monolithic lightweight structure using the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technique and subsequently metalized through the electro-less plating process. The stability of electrical properties has been verified in a thermal vacuum environment test to ensure its functionality in an LEO environment, characterized by significant temperature fluctuation.

Multifunctional Metamaterial with Reconfigurable Electromagnetic Scattering Properties for Advanced Stealth and Adaptive Applications

Abstract:The rapid development of radar detection systems has led to an increased sensitivity to the electromagnetic (EM) scattering properties of detected targets. Flexible and adaptable EM scattering properties significantly enhance the survivability of battlefield weapons. This paper presents the design of a novel multifunctional metamaterial with reconfigurable EM scattering properties based on a bistable curved beam. In addition to the cushioning and energy absorption properties of curved beams, the metamaterial achieves more than 90% EM absorption in the frequency range of 2.17-17.31 GHz, with a relative thickness of only 0.09λL. The bistable nature of the metamaterial allows it to switch between different states. Moreover, combined with the digital coding, this metamaterial can continuously adjust the absorbing bandwidth and further enhance the EM absorption rate within a specific frequency band range. If applied to satellite configurations, the developed metamaterial significantly reduces the radar cross section and offers potential applications in reconfiguring EM scattering properties, when applied to satellite configurations. By actively controller and reconstructing the EM scattering properties at certain frequency points, the metamaterial can achieve camouflage, providing innovative solutions for future stealth technology, electronic countermeasures, and deception jamming in radar detection.
Full-space Dual-Helicity Decoupled Metasurface for a High-Efficiency Multi-Folded Reflective Antenna.

Abstract:The independent tailoring of electromagnetic waves with different circular-polarized (CP) wavefront in both reflection and transmission channels is of broad scientific and technical interest, offering ultimate degrees of freedom in designing advanced devices with the merits of functionality integration and spatial exploitation. However, most metasurfaces only provide dependent wavefront control of dual-helicity in a single channel, restricting their applications to limited practical scenarios. Herein, we propose a full-space dual-helicity decoupled metasurface and apply it to assemble a multi-folded reflective antenna (MFRA) in the microwave regime. A multilayered chiral meta-atom is designed and optimized to reflect a particular helical wave while allowing the orthogonal helical wave to penetrate through, with simultaneous full span of phase modulations in both channels. When a uniform reflection and a hyperbolic transmission phase profile is imposed simultaneously on the metasurface in a polarization-selective manner, it can be engineered to conduct specular reflection for one helical wave and convergent transmission of the other helical wave. Combining the proposed metasurface with a metallic plate as a bottom reflector and an integrated microstrip patch antenna in the center of metasurface as a feed, a MFRA is realized with a low profile, high efficiency, and high polarization purity in a broad frequency band. The proposed design method of the dual-helicity decoupled metasurface and its antenna application provide opportunities for high-performance functional devices, promising more potential in future communication and detection systems.
Toward Metantennas: Metamaterial-Based Antennas for Wireless Communications

Abstract:Antennas have historically been the most common electromagnetic (EM) technology for wireless communication systems. Antenna as hardware is entirely dependent on the EM properties of the materials used, mostly related to the permittivity and permeability. In addition to natural materials, such as good conductors and low-loss dielectrics, metamaterials (MTMs) have been proposed as artificial structures engineered for unique EM properties that are not found in nature. MTMs have enabled new methods of controlling EM fields and wave propagation, resulting in the rapid development of innovative antennas based on MTMs, otherwise known as metantennas. Metantennas have been mostly developed to address critical challenges by increasing antenna gain and bandwidth while decreasing antenna volume and profile. This article presents three common metantenna designs that demonstrate how the metantenna technology addresses the most critical challenges in antenna design, that is, achieving a wide bandwidth and a high gain, as well as a miniaturized size. These designs include a low-profile wideband metantenna for 5G NR small cells using anisotropic high-permittivity MTM; a wideband antipodal antenna loaded with zero-index MTM for gain enhancement; and compact multiple-beam Luneburg lens antennas using transformation optics methods and MTM implementation. The designs demonstrate the advantages of metantennas over traditional antennas for the fifth and sixth generation communications as well as satellite communications.

A Metamaterial Surface Avoiding Loss from the Radome for a Millimeter-Wave Signal-Sensing Array Antenna

Abstract:Radar systems are a type of sensor that detects radio signals reflected from objects located a long distance from transmitters. For covering a longer range and a higher resolution in the operation of a radar, a high-frequency band and an array antenna are measures to take. Given a limited size to the antenna aperture in the front end of the radar, the choice of a millimeter-wave band leads to a denser layout for the array antenna and a higher antenna gain. Millimeter-wave signals tend to become attenuated faster by a larger loss of the covering material like the radome, implying this disadvantage offsets the advantage of high antenna directivity, compared to the C-band and X-band ones. As the radome is essential to the radar system to protect the array antenna from rain and dust, a metamaterial surface in the layer is suggested to meet multiple objectives. Firstly, the proposed electromagnetic structure is the protection layer for the source of radiation. Secondly, the metasurface does not disturb the millimeter-wave signal and makes its way through the cover layer to the air. This electromagnetically transparent surface transforms the phase distribution of the incident wave into the equal phase in the transmitted wave, resulting in an increased antenna gain. This is fabricated and assembled with the array antenna held in a 3D-printed jig with harnessing accessories. It is examined in view of S21 as the transfer coefficient between two ports of the VNA, having the antenna alone and with the metasurface. Additionally, the far-field test comes next to check the validity of the suggested structure and design. The bench test shows around a 7 dB increase in the transfer coefficient, and the anechoic chamber field test gives about a 5 dB improvement in antenna gain for a 24-band GHz array antenna.

Abstract:To optimize the reception and transmission in real-time changing links, phased array antennas have been increasingly investigated and applied in satellite applications. The phased array antenna technology intelligently combines multiple individual antenna elements to improve system performance in terms of gain enhancement, interference cancellation, radiation patterns formation, and radiation beam steering over a wide coverage. This article updates the latest development of metamaterial-based antenna (metantenna) technology in phased array antennas. With metama-terials' unique electromagnetic properties, which have never been found in nature, metantenna technology has been widely used to miniaturize the antenna element, broaden the bandwidth of the array, suppress the inter-element mutual coupling to eliminate scanning blindness, reduce the number of phase shifters, lower side-lobe levels, and so on. Recently, metantennas have been applied in the phased array technology to further boost the performance and reduce the volume and active device cost of the phased arrays in satellite systems. Two types of phased array metan-tennas are exemplified. One is the planar phased array metantenna operating at Ka-band with broadband circularly polarized operation over a wide scanning range. The other one is a hybrid architecture of a flat metalens and a circularly polarized phased array at X-band. The proposed low-profile architecture uses fewer phase shifters to lower the system complexity and cost. With performance enhancement and cost reduction, the phased array metantennas are ready to embrace more promising applications in next-generation satellite and radar systems as well as 5G Advanced and future 6G wireless communication systems.

Abstract:This paper presents the design and analysis of a metamaterial-based compact dual-band antenna for WBAN applications. The antenna is designed and fabricated on a 0.254 mm thick semi-flexible substrate, RT/Duroid® 5880, with a relative permittivity of 2.2 and a loss tangent of 0.0009. The total dimensions of the antenna are 0.26λo×0.19λo×0.002λo, where λo corresponds to the free space wavelength at 2.45 GHz. To enhance overall performance and isolate the antenna from adverse effects of the human body, it is backed by a 2×2 artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) plane. The total volume of the AMC integrated design is 0.55λo×0.55λo×0.002λo. The paper investigates the antenna's performance both with and without AMC integration, considering on- and off-body states, as well as various bending conditions in both E and H-planes. Results indicate that the AMC-integrated antenna gives improved measured gains of 6.61 dBi and 8.02 dBi, with bandwidths of 10.12% and 7.43% at 2.45 GHz and 5.80 GHz, respectively. Furthermore, the AMC integrated antenna reduces the specific absorption rate (SAR) to (>96%) and (>93%) at 2.45 GHz and 5.80 GHz, meeting FCC requirements for low SAR at both frequencies when placed in proximity to the human body. CST Microwave Studio (MWS) and Ansys High-Frequency Structure Simulation (HFSS), both full-wave simulation tools, are utilized to evaluate the antenna's performance and to characterize the AMC unit cell. The simulated and tested results are in mutual agreement. Due to its low profile, high gain, adequate bandwidth, low SAR values, and compact size, the AMC integrated antenna is considered suitable for WBAN applications.
Performance Enhancement of Novel Antipodal Vivaldi Antenna with Irregular Spacing Distance Slots and Modified-W-shaped Metamaterial Loading

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel enhanced far-field performance antipodal Vivaldi antenna (AVA) by including slots into the flare with irregular spacing distance between each other and modified-w-shaped metamaterial (MWSM) unit cells etched on both sides of the substrate. The MWSM unit cell is simulated in finite element method commercially available software HFSS version16 and the effective parameters of the meta-atom are extracted by homogenization retrieval method based on transmission and reflection coefficients. Electric field and surface current distribution are displayed to qualitatively explain the occurrence of near-zero index permittivity, permeability and refraction index in 10 GHz. The unloaded and loaded modeled AVA simulation is provided, respectively, in detail and manufacturing procedure is conducted to verify the effectiveness of the suggested ideas. The return loss measurement indicated a good impedance match between the bare AVA and the loading composite MWSM unit cells despite little discrepancy compared to the simulation results. Numerical simulation reveals that the gain of the composite AVA increases from 7.5 to 11.52 dB after loading with the irregular spacing distance slots in the flare and MWSM unit cells etched substrate. The half-power beamwidth decreased from 72.4° to 41.4° for the E-plane and reduced to 33.38° from 63.4° for the H-plane, respectively. The measured results of the fabricated prototype are consistent with the simulated ones with slight discrepancy. This presented strategy will combine the advantages of the lens effect of metamaterial on the AVA and modified radiating flare, thus keeping the low profile of the whole structure all the time.

Abstract:Designer manipulation of light at the nanoscale is key to several next-generation technologies, from sensing to optical computing. One way to manipulate light is to design a material structured at the sub-wavelength scale, a metamaterial, to have some desired scattering effect. Metamaterials typically have a very large number of geometric parameters that can be tuned, making the design process difficult. Existing design paradigms either neglect degrees of freedom or rely on numerically expensive full-wave simulations. In this work, we derive a simple semi-analytic method for designing metamaterials built from sub-wavelength elements with electric and magnetic dipole resonances. This is relevant to several experimentally accessible regimes. To demonstrate the versatility of our method, we apply it to three problems: the manipulation of the coupling between nearby emitters, focusing a plane wave to a single point and designing a dielectric antenna with a particular radiation pattern.
