Abstract:ConspectusThe importance of current Li-ion batteries (LIBs) in modern society cannot be overstated. While the energy demands of devices increase, the corresponding enhancements in energy density of battery technologies are highly sought after. Currently, many different battery concepts, such as Li-S and metal-air among many others, have been investigated. However, their practical implementation has mostly been restricted to the prototyping stage. In fact, most of these technologies require rework of existing Li-ion battery manufacturing facilities and will naturally incur resistance to change from industry. For this reason, one specifically attractive technology, anionic redox in transition metal oxides, has gained much attention in the recent years. Its ability to be directly used in already established processes and higher energy density with similar electrolyte formulation make it a key materials research direction for next generation Li-ion batteries. In regular LIBs, the redox active centers are the transition metal cation. In anion redox, both the anion (typically O) and the transition metal cation are utilized as redox centers with enormous implications for increasing energy density. This new material can be highly competitive for replacing the current LIB technologies. However, much is still unknown about its cycling mechanism. Upon activating the O redox couples, most cationic and anionic redox active materials will either evolve O2 or undergo irreversible structural degradation with associated severe decreases in electrochemical performance. By understanding the transition from full anion redox to partial cationic and anionic redox, we hope readers can gain a deeper understanding of the topic.This Account will focus mainly on the work that was conducted by our group at Argonne National Laboratory. The phenomenon of cationic and anionic redox in a lithium-ion battery cathode will first be discussed. Our work in resonant inelastic X-ray scattering to investigate the spectroscopic features of O after delithiation has found potential "fingerprint" signals that could likely be used to identify and confirm reversible O redox if corroborated with other techniques. To follow, we will examine our work on Li-O2 batteries. While our group and the research community have had many significant contributions and improvements to the field of Li-O2 (such as decreasing overpotential and achieving cyclability in air environment), its practical application is still far from realization. Perhaps our most important contribution to this area is the discovery that Ir deposited on reduced graphene oxide can be used to halt the reduction of O2 at the LiO2 oxidation state. This not only significantly decreases the charge overpotential but also presents the important concept of oxidation-state controlled discharge. Subsequently, we will focus on our oxidation state-controlled redox-based charging of oxygen in a pure oxygen redox Li-ion battery. Future implications of this technology will be emphasized.
Exploring the Origin of Anionic Redox Activity in Super Li-Rich Iron Oxide-Based High-Energy-Density Cathode Materials

Abstract:Super alkali-rich materials (alkali:transition metal ratio of ≥2:1), such as Li5FeO4, exhibit the potential to realize anionic redox upon deep delithiation. Li5FeO4 was shown to undergo reversible cycling between Li4FeO3.5 and Li3FeO3.5 with combined cation/anion redox, a remarkable capacity of 189 mAh/g, and no O2 release. However, the impact of phase transformations on the reaction thermodynamics and the correlation between the structural changes and reaction reversibility remain unclear. In this study, we use first-principles calculations to examine the delithiation and (re)lithiation reactions of Li5FeO4. We show that the experimentally observed charge and discharge processes go through non-equilibrium pathways. Upon delithiation, the compound undergoes a phase transformation from Li5FeO4, with tetrahedrally coordinated (Td) Fe ions, to a delithiated disordered rocksalt structure, with octahedral (Oh) Fe ions. Fe-ion migration has an asymmetric kinetic barrier that makes Td → Oh migration facile, whereas the reverse process has a much larger barrier, explaining the difficulties in reaction reversibility. We further elucidate the transition metal and O redox sequences during the charge cycle and identify the complex electrochemistry associated with the dual participation of cationic redox (Fe3+/Fe4+) and anionic redox (O2–/O–/O0). Armed with this knowledge, we conduct high-throughput screening of known alkali-rich transition metal oxides by evaluating their potential to enable reversible anionic redox, with multiple candidates proposed for further experimental trials. Our work provides a useful guide for the further development of super alkali-rich anionic-redox-active electrodes for high-energy-density batteries.

Understanding the roles of anionic redox and oxygen release during electrochemical cycling of lithium-rich layered Li4FeSbO6

Abstract:Li-rich oxides continue to be of immense interest as potential next generation Li-ion battery positive electrodes, and yet the role of oxygen during cycling is still poorly understood. Here, the complex electrochemical behavior of Li4FeSbO6 materials is studied thoroughly with a variety of methods. Herein, we show that oxygen release occurs at a distinct voltage plateau from the peroxo/superoxo formation making this material ideal for revealing new aspects of oxygen redox processes in Li-rich oxides. Moreover, we directly demonstrate the limited reversibility of the oxygenated species (O2(n-); n = 1, 2, 3) for the first time. We also find that during charge to 4.2 V iron is oxidized from +3 to an unusual +4 state with the concomitant formation of oxygenated species. Upon further charge to 5.0 V, an oxygen release process associated with the reduction of iron +4 to +3 is present, indicative of the reductive coupling mechanism between oxygen and metals previously reported. Thus, in full state of charge, lithium removal is fully compensated by oxygen only, as the iron and antimony are both very close to their pristine states. Besides, this charging step results in complex phase transformations that are ultimately destructive to the crystallinity of the material. Such findings again demonstrate the vital importance of fully understanding the behavior of oxygen in such systems. The consequences of these new aspects of the electrochemical behavior of lithium-rich oxides are discussed in detail.

Abstract:Li‐rich cathodes have been extensively investigated as their energy density is superior to Li stoichiometric cathode materials. In addition to the transition metal redox, this intriguing electrochemical performance originates from the redox reaction of the anionic sub‐lattice. This new redox process, the so‐called anionic redox or, more directly, oxygen redox in the case of oxides, almost doubles the energy density of Li‐rich cathodes compared to conventional cathodes. Numerous theoretical and experimental investigations have thoroughly established the current understanding of the oxygen redox of Li‐rich cathodes. However, different reports are occasionally contradictory, indicating that current knowledge remains incomplete. Moreover, several practical issues still hinder the real‐world application of Li‐rich cathodes. As these issues are related to phenomena resulting from the electronic to atomic evolution induced by unstable oxygen redox, a fundamental multiscale understanding is essential for solving the problem. In this review, we attempt to summarize the current mechanistic understanding of oxygen redox, the origin of the practical problems, and how current studies tackle the issues. Abstract:Conventional cathodes of Li-ion batteries mainly operate through an insertion-extraction process involving transition metal redox. These cathodes will not be able to meet the increasing requirements until lithium-rich layered oxides emerge with beyond-capacity performance. Nevertheless, in-depth understanding of the evolution of crystal and excess capacity delivered by Li-rich layered oxides is insufficient. Herein, various in situ technologies such as X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy are employed for a typical material Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.6O2, directly visualizing O--O- (peroxo oxygen dimers) bonding mostly along the c-axis and demonstrating the reversible O2-/O- redox process. Additionally, the formation of the peroxo O-O bond is calculated via density functional theory, and the corresponding O-O bond length of approximate to 1.3 angstrom matches well with the in situ Raman results. These findings enrich the oxygen chemistry in layered oxides and open opportunities to design high-performance positive electrodes for lithium-ion batteries.
Fingerprint oxygen redox reactions in batteries through high-efficiency mapping of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (mRIXS)

Abstract:Realizing reversible reduction-oxidation (Redox) reactions of lattice oxygen in batteries is a promising way to improve the energy and power density. However, conventional oxygen absorption spectroscopy fails to distinguish the critical oxygen chemistry in oxide-based battery electrodes. Therefore, high-efficiency full-range mapping of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (mRIXS) has been developed as a reliable probe of oxygen redox reactions. Here, based on mRIXS results collected from a series of Li1.17Ni0.21Co0.08Mn0.54O2 electrodes at different electrochemical states and its comparison with peroxides, we provide a comprehensive analysis of five components observed in the mRIXS results. While almost all the components change upon electrochemical cycling, comparison with peroxide species show that only two evolving features correspond to the critical oxidized oxygen states. One is a specific feature at 531.0eV excitation and 523.7eV emission energy, the other is a low-energy loss feature. We show that both features evolve with electrochemical cycling of Li1.17Ni0.21Co0.08Mn0.54O2 electrodes, and could be used for characterizing oxygen redox states in battery electrodes. This work is the first benchmark for a complete assignment of all the important mRIXS features collected from battery materials, which provides guidelines for future studies in characterization, analysis and theoretical calculation for probing and understanding oxygen redox reactions.

Mechanism of Exact Transition between Cationic and Anionic Redox Activities in Cathode Material Li 2 FeSiO 4 .

Abstract:The discovery of anion redox activity is promising for boosting the capacity of lithium ion battery (LIB) cathodes. However, fundamental understanding of the mechanisms that trigger the anionic redox is still lacking. Here, using hybrid density functional study combined with experimental soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (sXAS) measurements, we unambiguously proved that Li((2-x))FeSiO4 performs sequent cationic and anionic redox activity through delithiation. Specifically, Fe2+ is oxidized to Fe3+ during the first Li ion extraction per formula unit (f.u.), while the second Li ion extraction triggered the oxygen redox exclusively. Cationic and anionic redox result in electron and hole polaron states, respectively, explaining the poor conductivity of Li((2-x))FeSiO4 noted by previous experiments. In contrast, other cathode materials in this family exhibit diversity of the redox process. Li2MnSiO4 shows double cationic redox (Mn2+-Mn4+) during the whole delithiation, while Li2CoSiO4 shows simultaneous cationic and anionic redox. The present finding not only provides new insights into the oxygen redox activity in polyanionic compounds for rechargeable batteries but also sheds light on the future design of high-capacity rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Anionic redox reactions in cathodes of lithium-ion batteries are allowing opportunities to double or even triple the energy density. However, it is still challenging to develop a cathode, especially with Earth-abundant elements, that enables anionic redox activity for real-world applications, primarily due to limited strategies to intercept the oxygenates from further irreversible oxidation to O2 gas. Here we report simultaneous iron and oxygen redox activity in a Li-rich anti-fluorite Li5FeO4 electrode. During the removal of the first two Li ions, the oxidation potential of O2− is lowered to approximately 3.5 V versus Li+/Li0, at which potential the cationic oxidation occurs concurrently. These anionic and cationic redox reactions show high reversibility without any obvious O2 gas release. Moreover, this study provides an insightful guide to designing high-capacity cathodes with reversible oxygen redox activity by simply introducing oxygen ions that are exclusively coordinated by Li+. It is challenging to exploit anionic redox activity to boost performance of battery electrodes, especially for anti-fluorite structures. Here the authors report simultaneous anionic and cationic redox in Li5FeO4, which enables its high capacity and eliminates the undesired oxygen gas release.

Abstract:Oxygen redox in Li-rich oxides may boost the energy density of lithium-ion batteries by incorporating oxygen chemistry in solid cathodes. However, oxygen redox in the bulk usually entangles with voltage hysteresis and oxygen release, resulting in a prolonged controversy in literature on oxygen transformation. Here, we report spectroscopic evidence of peroxo species formed and confined in silicate cathodes amid oxygen redox at high voltage, accompanied by Co2+ /Co3+ redox dominant at low voltage. First-principles calculations reveal that localized electrons on dangling oxygen drive the O-O dimerization. The covalence between the binding cation and the O-O dimer determines the degree of electron transfer in oxygen transformation. Dimerization induces irreversible structural distortion and slow kinetics. But peroxo formation can minimize the voltage drop and volume expansion in cumulative cationic and anionic redox. These findings offer insights into oxygen redox in the bulk for the rational design of high-energy-density cathodes.

Abstract:Recent debates on the oxygen redox behaviors in battery electrodes have triggered a pressing demand for the reliable detection and understanding of non-divalent oxygen states beyond conventional absorption spectroscopy. Here, enabled by high-efficiency mapping of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (mRIXS) coupled with first-principles calculations, we report distinct mRIXS features of the oxygen states in Li2O, Li2CO3, and especially, Li2O2, which are successfully reproduced and interpreted theoretically. mRIXS signals are dominated by valence-band decays in Li2O and Li2CO3. However, the oxidized oxygen in Li2O2 leads to partially unoccupied O-2p states that yield a specific intra-band excitonic feature in mRIXS. Such a feature displays a specific emission energy in mRIXS, which disentangles the oxidized oxygen states from the dominating transition-metal/oxygen hybridization features in absorption spectroscopy, thus providing critical hints for both detecting and understanding the oxygen redox reactions in transition-metal oxide based battery materials.

Oxygen redox in battery cathodes: A brief overview

Abstract:The participation of oxygen or other anionic species in redox activities in cathode materials for lithium and sodium-ion battery systems is known to play a role in governing the useful capacity of these batteries. Directly probing anionic redox mechanisms is not possible, rather the computational analysis by density functional theory poses the main approach towards gleaning insights into anionic redox activity and harnessing these effects to maximize capacity in future electrode materials. Here we showcase material systems exhibiting this mechanism of ion insertion and removal, and present the key computational considerations in studying anionic redox activities in battery materials. Aided by new computationally derived understandings of the role of anionic redox in emerging battery materials, increasingly greater levels of useable capacities can be extracted through informed materials design.

Abstract:Oxygen activity in highly delithiated LiCoO2 is critical to fully utilizing the energy density of this high-tap-density cathode but still lacks a clear understanding. In this work, we combined the results of several experimental techniques, especially resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) and neutron pair distribution function (NPDF) analysis, together with theoretical calculations to study this topic. Our results conclude that oxygen redox takes place globally in the lattice, rather than forming localized dimerization as previously thought. RIXS results directly reveal the reversible oxygen redox, and NPDF results show that the O–O pair distance is considerably shortened in the highly delithiated LiCoO2. Theoretical calculations indicate that no O–O bonding is formed in LiCoO2, in sharp contrast to the lithium-rich system in which O–O bonding does form. These results provide the rationale for achieving a reversible deep delithiation and high energy density for LiCoO2-based electrodes.

Abstract:Li-rich cathodes possess high capacity and are promising candidates in next-generation high-energy density Li-ion batteries. This high capacity is partly attributed to its poorly understood oxygen-redox activity. The present Li-rich cathodes contain expensive and environmentally-incompatible cobalt as a main transition metal. In this work, cobalt-free, iron-containing Li-rich cathode material (nominal composition Li1.2Mn0.56Ni0.16Fe0.08O2) is synthesized, which exhibits excellent discharge capacity (≈250 mAh g−1) and cycling stability. In operando, X-ray absorption spectroscopy at Mn, Fe, and Ni K edges reveals its electrochemical mechanism. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) features of Fe and Ni K edges show unusual behavior: when an electrode is charged to 4.5 V, Fe and Ni K edges' XANES features shift to higher energies, evidence for Fe3+→Fe4+ and Ni2+→Ni4+ oxidation. However, when charged above 4.5 V, XANES features of Fe and Ni K edges shift back to lower energies, indicating Fe4+→Fe3+ and Ni4+→Ni3+ reduction. This behavior can be linked to a reductive coupling mechanism between oxygen and Fe/Ni. Though this mechanism is observed in Fe-containing Li-rich materials, the only electrochemically active metal in such cases is Fe. Li1.2Mn0.56Ni0.16Fe0.08O2 has multiple electrochemically active metal ions; Fe and Ni, which are investigated simultaneously and the obtained results will assist tailoring of cost-effective Li-rich materials.

Abstract:It is widely recognised that oxygen redox makes a significant contribution to the high capacity of some cathode materials in addition to transition metal redox. We attribute this to the presence of underbonded oxide ions, either in bulk structures or at surfaces, which are the initial source of oxygen redox during charging. Underbonded oxide ions experience departures from local electroneutrality; examples include Li4Mn5O12 spinel and Li‐rich layered rock salt structures but not stoichiometric LiCoO2 or Li2MnO3. Underbonded oxide ions ionise more readily than fully‐stabilised lattice oxide ions since, using an ionic bonding description, they are associated with a deficiency of positive charge in the coordination sphere of surrounding cations. Pauling's electrostatic bond strength criterion gives a simple guide to structures or compositions that show departures from local electroneutrality and provides the starting point for a new way to consider oxygen redox. Li4Mn5O12 behaves as an anode due to Mn redox below 3V and as a cathode due to reversible oxygen redox above ~3.8 V. Underbonded oxygens are also identified in other structures, including high capacity Li‐rich layered rock salt structures.

Abstract:Oxygen vacancies (Ov), which are internal defects of metal oxides, can effectively alter intrinsic properties of materials. Developing an anode material containing Ovs applied in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) was hypothesized to enhance their electrochemical performance, which has currently attracted extensive attention. Herein, we successfully synthesized three groups of Fe3O4 nanoparticles with different Ov concentrations by a facile and controllable electrochemical oxidation corrosion method. First, density functional theory was applied to predict the Li-ion storage performance and electronic properties of pristine Fe3O4 and the synthesized different Ov-content Fe3O4 materials. When used as an anode material in LIBs, all the three as-prepared Ov-rich Fe3O4 electrodes possessed excellent cycling performance and high reversibility. After 330 cycles, the reversible capacity achieved 745 mAh g−1, 921 mAh g−1, and 850 mAh g−1, respectively. Ovs in the Fe3O4 not only promote high electronic conductivity in the materials, but also afford additional active sites for lithiation and delithiation, further enhancing the electrochemical performance. However, excessive Ovs are not conducive to the improvement of lithium storage capacity. Theoretical predictions and experimental results are consistent with each other. This work has great importance in the direction of oxygen defect applications in the field of LIBs.

Abstract:Since the discovery of its electrochemical activity, Li-excess disordered rock-salt (DRX) cathode material has received worldwide attention as it sets up a new way to exploit oxygen redox beyond the conventional layered structure with late-3d transition metal. However, the intricate structure-function relationship in the disordered lattice of DRX material fogs up the researcher's lens on the underlying redox mechanisms. In this study, we employ a synergistic approach combining neutron total scattering with reverse Monte Carlo modeling and density functional theory calculations to unravel the landscape of oxygen redox reactions in DRX. Redox activities are evaluated in diverse oxygen clusters (OLixTM6-x) and the spatial distribution of these clusters in the model DRX structure (Li1.16Ti0.37Ni0.37Nb0.1O2 and Li1.2Ti0.35Ni0.35Nb0.1O1.8F0.2) is explicitly counted. Results unveil that through regulating the short-range ordering between cations, fluorination atoms can effectively decouple the location of Li extraction and electron depletion. Such disentanglement between the Li reservoir and electron reservoir in the DRX lattice could play a pivotal role in protecting the oxidized oxygen and preserving the lattice framework during cycling. Through a tentatively designed non-fluorinated DRX oxide realizing similar Li-electron decoupling, an obvious enhancement of cycling capability can be achieved without compromising the capacity release.

Abstract:Reversible high-voltage redox chemistry is an essential component of many electrochemical technologies, from (electro)catalysts to lithium-ion batteries. Oxygen-anion redox has garnered intense interest for such applications, particularly lithium-ion batteries, as it offers substantial redox capacity at more than 4 V versus Li/Li+ in a variety of oxide materials. However, oxidation of oxygen is almost universally correlated with irreversible local structural transformations, voltage hysteresis and voltage fade, which currently preclude its widespread use. By comprehensively studying the Li2−xIr1−ySnyO3 model system, which exhibits tunable oxidation state and structural evolution with y upon cycling, we reveal that this structure–redox coupling arises from the local stabilization of short approximately 1.8 Å metal–oxygen π bonds and approximately 1.4 Å O–O dimers during oxygen redox, which occurs in Li2−xIr1−ySnyO3 through ligand-to-metal charge transfer. Crucially, formation of these oxidized oxygen species necessitates the decoordination of oxygen to a single covalent bonding partner through formation of vacancies at neighbouring cation sites, driving cation disorder. These insights establish a point-defect explanation for why anion redox often occurs alongside local structural disordering and voltage hysteresis during cycling. Our findings offer an explanation for the unique electrochemical properties of lithium-rich layered oxides, with implications generally for the design of materials employing oxygen redox chemistry.
