Abstract:A lignosulfonate/chitosan–graphene oxide hydrogel (LCGH) composite was successfully synthesized to effectively remove Cr(VI) from wastewater. The physical–chemical properties of the prepared LCGH was characterized by SEM, FT-IR, XRD, XPS, and TGA. The results showed that LCGH had an cross-linked three-dimensional porous network structure that was conducive to Cr(VI) adsorption, resulting in a high Cr(VI) adsorption capacity (564.2 mg/g). Thermodynamic analysis showed that Cr(VI) adsorption on LCGH was spontaneous endothermic and fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models. The reaction mechanisms for Cr(VI) removal were hydrogen bond, electrostatic attraction, and π-π interaction. LCGH demonstrated good reproducibility and its adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) could still maintained at 85.4% after 5 cycles of regeneration. The biosorbent LCGH was a low-cost and eco-friendly material, which has a good prospect for Cr(VI) wastewater removal.

Abstract:The pollution of chromium wastewater is becoming more and more serious. Biological adsorption of hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) is an effective waste water treatment technology. In this work, non-treated leaves (NL), sulfuric acid modified leaves (SL), and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) modified leaves (CL) were used to remove Cr (VI) from the water. Indeed, leaves are highly effective and low-cost biosorbents, and were proven to achieve a recovery of resources from waste. In the batch experiments, the adsorption of Cr (VI) onto SL and CL was shown to be influenced by several factors, including the initial pH of the solution, the adsorbent dosage, and temperature. The X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) results suggest that the reduction of Cr (VI) to the less harmful trivalent chromate Cr (III) occurred during the adsorption processes; this was followed by Cr (III) adsorption onto the surface of the adsorbents. The maximum adsorption capacities obtained for Cr (VI) at 35 degrees C were 170.8 and 137.9 mg/g for SL and CL at pH 2, respectively. The results show that SL and CL, as cheap and effective biosorbents of Cr (VI), realized the recycling of wastes and have good application prospects.

Abstract:Here we reported a novel xanthated chitosan-entrapped gamma-alumina (XCSA) composite sorbent that presents effective removal toward toxic hexavalent chromium ions [Cr(VI)] from water. The samples were characterized by FTIR, SEM-EDS, XRD, TGA, and XPS. Batch sorption experiments were performed to investigate the influences of component ratio, initial solution pH, and competing ions on the Cr(VI) removal. An adsorption-coupled reduction mechanism controlled the Cr(VI) removal processes, in which xanthation groups played a key part. The sorption process revealed that ∼65% Cr(VI) (50 mg/L) was adsorbed within 5 min, and kinetic data fitted well with the pseudo-second-order model. The sorption isotherm data fitted well with Freundlich model, and the experimental maximum sorption capacity for Cr(VI) by XCSA-1.0 (with the alumina-to-polymer mass ratio of 1:1) was ∼110.5 mg/g. In addition, XCSA-1.0 expressed the good anti-interference ability of the competing ions. Moreover, the exhausted adsorbent, which could be regenerated by 1.0 M KCl solution, exhibited good reusability after five cycles. Overall, this study shows XCSA as a promising sorbent for anionic heavy metal removal from water.

Synthesis of cationic biomass lignosulfonate hydrogel for the efficient adsorption of Cr(VI) in wastewater with low pH

Abstract:In the present study, we synthesized a cationic lignosulfonate hydrogel (LS-g-P (AM-co-DAC)) by grafting acrylamide (AM) and acryloxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DAC) onto sodium lignosulfonate (LS) via free radical copolymerization. The solution pH, contact time, initial concentration, and temperature were comprehensively investigated through the static adsorption method for the adsorption behaviours of Cr(VI) by the hydrogel. The experimental results show that the best conditions were a temperature of 30°C, a dosage of 0.1 g, pH = 3, a concentration of 50 mg / L, and contact time = 2 h with removal efficiencies of above 70% and adsorption capacity of 18.14 mg·g-1. The adsorption process followed the Langmuir isothermal model, indicating monolayer adsorption, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 58.86 mg·g-1. Adsorption kinetics results show that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model dominated the adsorption process, and the adsorption activation energy was 5.489 kJ·mol-1. In addition, the adsorption involved spontaneous exothermic and entropy reduction. The combination of FT-IR, SEM, and XRD was used to characterize the structure and properties of the prepared hydrogel, and the adsorption mechanism was the result of electrostatic attraction, physical and chemical adsorption, and hydrogen bond. The hydrogel has good regenerative properties after desorption. Overall, this work synthesized an environmentally friendly biomass lignin-based hydrogel, which can be used as an adsorbent for the treatment of anionic pollutants, and explored a new method for the high-value utilization of industrial lignin.HighlightsNovel cationic lignosulfonate hydrogel (LS-g-P (AM-co-DAC)) was synthesized by a free radical method.SEM and XRD results confirmed the surface of the obtained hydrogel shows a 3D network structure and does not have a crystal structure.LS-g-P (AM-co-DAC) hydrogel adsorbent can selectively adsorb Cr6+ at pH 3.0.The adsorption conditions and the adsorption mechanism were studied in detail.Electrostatic interaction plays a key role in the adsorption of Cr6+.

Abstract:An imidazolium salt-based hydrogel with hyperbranched topology (hbGel-PEG-TTIm+Br6−) was proposed for efficient adsorption towards anionic hexavalent chromium ions (Cr(VI)). For the purpose, a bromo-terminated A3 type monomer and a imidazole-terminated B3 type monomer were firstly synthesized via O-esterification and Michael addition, respectively. Then, hbGel-PEG-TTIm+Br6− was obtained by the one-pot step polymerization of “A3 + B3” approach via N-alkylation reaction. The chemical structure and morphology of the as-prepared hydrogel were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and scanning electron microscope. The cross-linking network structure was calculated according to the Flory–Rehner equilibrium swelling equation. The effects of solution pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time and initial Cr(VI) concentration on the adsorption performance were also investigated, and the maximum adsorption capacity could reach ~ 238 mg g−1. In addition, the adsorption process of Cr(VI) on hbGel-PEG-TTIm+Br6− was well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the adsorption equilibrium data fitted with Langmuir isotherm model better than Freundlich isotherm model. This novel hydrogel with hyperbranched topology can potentially be applied in the treatment of wastewater containing Cr(VI).

Designed synthesis of demethylated-hydroxymethylated lignin-based adsorbent for removal of Cr(VI) ions from wastewater

Abstract:Lignin-based adsorbents for the removal of Cr(VI) ions have attracted intensive attention due to the advantages of renewability, biodegradablity, low cost and environmental friendliness. However, there are still a lot of challenges such as poor adsorption capacity, low lignin content in adsorbents, and harsh preparation conditions. Here, a tandem hydroxymethylation-demethylation method is proposed for preparing an excellent lignin-based Cr(VI) adsorbent (DHKL), which features with high lignin content (>85 wt%) and high hydroxyl content (up to 6.26 mmol/g) under milder conditions. The prepared DHKL exhibits an adsorption capacity reaching up to 1040.9 mg/g and can maintain this capacity even in the presence of other metal ions in the solution. Model analyses indicate that chemisorption occurring in a monolayer is the main process, which is spontaneous and endothermic. Structural changes of DHKL before and after adsorption indicated that Cr(VI) ions are mainly reduced to Cr(III) ions by hydroxyl groups with some of the absorbed Cr ions dispersed into the inner part of DHKL. Based on these results, the detailed possible adsorption mechanism is deduced, providing guidance for designing, producing and utilizing lignin-based adsorbents.

Abstract:In this study, the removal of hexavalent chromium, a nonradioactive analogue of pertechnetate, from aqueous solution by bamboo shoot shell (BSS) biosorbent was investigated. Characterization of the sorbent was performed by element analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The effects of diverse parameters including solution pH, adsorbent concentration and adsorption time on the adsorption process were discussed in detail. The adsorption of Cr(VI) by the BSS obeyed Elovich kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity based on Langmuir model for BSS was 28.72 mg/g, which was higher than that of other biosorbents previously reported in the literature. The thermodynamic analysis suggested that Cr(VI) adsorption was a spontaneous endothermic process. On the basis of these results, an adsorption-reduction interaction on the heterogeneous surface of biosorbent would be the predominant mechanism. The findings herein revealed that the BSS had great potential as a suitable and sustainable biosorbent material for the removal of pertechnetate.

Abstract:<p>Heavy metal contamination has prevented the sustainable and efficient utilization of wastewater. Biosorption is a promising process which means technical innovation and biomaterials preparation to remove pollutants from water solutions. In this study, a novel lignosulfonate-modified graphene hydrogel (LGH) was successfully prepared to remove Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. Results indicated the combination of lignosulfonate and graphene could significantly improve the adsorption performance of LGH. The obtained biomaterials LGH were characterized by FT-IR, XPS, BET, TGA, and SEM. Results showed that LGH has a high specific surface area, interconnected porous structure, and plenty of oxygen-containing groups, which are particularly suitable to adsorb heavy metals. Experimental results indicated an ultrahigh adsorption capacity of 1743.9 mg/g for Cr(VI) capture, and has been found to be the highest among the previously reported values on Cr(VI) adsorption by various lignin/lignosulfonate-based adsorbents. Systematic kinetic and isotherm studies were performed to investigate the adsorption behaviors of Cr(VI) by LGH. Results showed that the adsorption of Cr(VI) by LGH follows the pseudo-second-order model and the equilibrium data consistent with Langmuir isotherm model. The active groups presented in LGH were related to the binding of Cr(VI), and electrostatic adsorption and chemisorption could be the major adsorption mechanisms. The recycling and reuse of LGH was successfully achieved by using 0.1 M NaOH without destroying its original hydrogel structure, and more than 88% reuse efficiency of Cr(VI) (300 mg/L) was obtained after 5 cycles. The results suggest a promising approach by utilizing low-cost lignosulfonate for the high-potential purification and sustainable utilization of wastewater, especially for the high concentrations of heavy metal polluted wastewater treatment.</p>

Abstract:Discharging hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI))-containing wastewater has become a critical environmental and ecological concern. Coffee grounds biochar (CGB), rich in oxygen-containing functional groups, can reduce Cr(VI) to the less toxic trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) without secondary contamination. This study developed a composite adsorbent by incorporating sodium alginate (SA) into CGB, exploiting their synergistic adsorption and ion exchange reduction effects for efficient Cr(VI) removal. The maximum adsorption capacity of SACGB, fitted by the Langmuir isotherm model, was 30.66 ± 1.89 mg/g. Under optimal conditions (pH = 2, SA: CGB mass ratio = 3:2, Cr(VI) concentration = 50 mg/L), SACGB achieved 99.79 % Cr(VI) removal from synthetic wastewater. Significant Cr(VI) reduction to Cr(III) (58.97 % removal) occurred at an SA:CGB ratio of 1:1. The adsorption mechanism involved hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, and ion exchange reduction. Removal of Cr(VI) retained 93 % removal despite interference from coexisting Cu(II), Zn(II), and Ni(II) ions, and the ions promoted Cr(VI) adsorption onto SACGB. In actual wastewater, SACGB exhibited excellent Cr(VI) removal (99.26 %), meeting the Chinese industrial effluent discharge standard (0.2 mg/L). After 6 recycling cycles, SACGB demonstrated stable removal performance and contained no biotoxic components. The cost of preparation and adsorption process was analyzed and also compared with earlier studies to evaluate and highlight the economic feasibility of the adsorbent for a truly green removal method. This study highlights SACGB as an economical and efficient adsorbent with practical application potential for Cr(VI) removal from industrial wastewater.

Abstract:Cr( VI ) is a great threat to the ecological environment and human health, so it is urgent to remove Cr( VI ) from the environment. In this study, a novel silica gel adsorbent SiO 2 –CHO–APBA containing phenylboronic acids and aldehyde groups was prepared, evaluated and applied for removing Cr( VI ) from water and soil samples. The adsorption conditions including pH, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration of Cr( VI ), temperature and time were optimized. Its ability in removing Cr( VI ) was investigated and compared with three other common adsorbents, SiO 2 –NH 2 , SiO 2 –SH and SiO 2 –EDTA. Data showed SiO 2 –CHO–APBA had the highest adsorption capacity of 58.14 mg g −1 at pH 2 and could reach adsorption equilibrium in about 3 h. When 50 mg SiO 2 –CHO–APBA was added in 20 mL of 50 mg L −1 Cr( VI ) solution, more than 97% of Cr( VI ) was removed. A mechanism study revealed that a cooperative interaction of both the aldehyde and boronic acid groups is attributed to Cr( VI ) removal. The reducing function was gradually weakened with the consumption of the aldehyde group, which was oxidized to a carboxyl group by Cr( VI ). This SiO 2 –CHO–APBA adsorbent was successfully used for the removal of Cr( VI ) from soil samples with satisfactory results which indicates a good potential in agriculture and other fields.

Abstract:Sorptive removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) bears the advantages of simple operation and easy construction. Customized polymeric materials are the attracting adsorbents due to their selectivity, chemical and mechanical stabilities. The mostly investigated polymeric materials for removing Cr(VI) were reviewed in this work. Assembling of robust functional groups, reduction of self-aggregation, and enhancement of stability and mechanical strength, were the general strategies to improve the performance of polymeric adsorbents. The maximum adsorption capacities of these polymers toward Cr(VI) fitted by Langmuir isotherm model ranged from 3.2 to 1185 mg/g. Mechanisms of complexation, chelation, reduction, electrostatic attraction, anion exchange, and hydrogen bonding were involved in the Cr(VI) removal. Influence factors on Cr(VI) removal were itemized. Polymeric adsorbents performed much better in the strong acidic pH range (e.g., pH 2.0) and at higher initial Cr(VI) concentrations. The adsorption of Cr(VI) was an endothermic reaction, and higher reaction temperature favored more robust adsorption. Anions inhibited the removal of Cr(VI) through competitive adsorption, while that was barely affected by cations. Factors that affected the regeneration of these adsorbents were summarized. To realize the goal of industrial application and environmental protection, removal of the Cr(VI) accompanied by its detoxication through reduction is highly encouraged. Moreover, development of adsorbents with strong regeneration ability and low cost, which are robust for removing Cr(VI) at trace levels and a wider pH range, should also be an eternally immutable subject in the future. Work done will be helpful for developing more robust polymeric adsorbents and for promoting the treatment of Cr(VI)-containing wastewater.

Abstract:Water containing heavy metal ions can be extremely harmful to the environment and human body, thus the development of low-cost and high-efficient adsorbents has an exciting prospect. In this study, lignin/graphene aerogels modified with polydopamine and polyethyleneimine, respectively, were successfully prepared to remove Cr(VI) from aqueous waste. The physicochemical properties of graphene aerogels (GA), lignin/graphene aerogels (LGA), polydopamine-modified lignin/graphene aerogels (LGA@PDA), polyethyleneimine-modified lignin/graphene aerogels (LGA@PEI) were investigated using FT-IR, Raman spectroscopy , XRD , XPS, SEM-EDS, and BET analysis. The results demonstrate that adsorbents have a high specific surface area, an interconnected porous structure, and a large number of oxygen-containing groups, making them particularly favorable for heavy metal adsorption. The effects of GO/lignin ratio, surface modifiers, solution pH, contact time, initial concentration and temperature on the Cr(VI) removal were investigated and compared via batch experiments. Compared with GA (138.74 ± 3.93 mg/g), the adsorption capacity of LGA with GO/LA ratio 40:1 increased to 167.66 ± 4.75 mg/g. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of LGA@PEI and LGA@PDA rose up to 209.85 ± 3.25 mg/g and 240.39 ± 3.26 mg/mg, respectively. By simulating the experimental data with different kinetic models and isotherm models, the adsorption processes of different lignin-derived aerogels were further explored under various conditions. All types of aerogels fit well with the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model. In addition, the XPS results confirm that the chemical reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) also plays a role in the removal of Cr(VI). The results demonstrated that the removal effect of lignin-derived aerogels on Cr(VI) was greatly improved through the multi-functionalized surface modification of LGA with PDA and PEI. Furthermore, the removal efficiency of LGA@PDA and LGA@PEI for Cr(VI) remained stable after repeated regeneration. Therefore, the results of this study indicate that LGA@PDA and LGA@PEI are promising Cr(VI) adsorbents for practical applications in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Ankle sprains are the most common sports-related injury. About 80% subjects suffer recurrent sprains. Repeated injuries may cause chronic ankle instability, which will affect sports efficacy and postural control ability. In recent years, smartphones had become very popular and powerful devices, and been showed to have good validity on measuring range of motion and assessing gait patterns. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of smartphone-based system in postural control ability assessment on chronic ankle instability. METHODS: Fifteen subjects (6 male, 9 female; age=23.4±5.28 y/o) who have at least one leg scoring lower than 27 points in Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool were recruited. ASUS Zenfone 2 smartphone was used to conduct the postural control assessment, by recording its built-in accelerometer data with an App developed using MIT App inventor. Subjects performed single leg stance for 20 seconds in eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions with each leg. The smartphone was fixed on the middle of shin with an exercise armband. The average of recorded acceleration data was used to represent the postural control performance, and the higher value indicated more instability. Data was analyzed with paired t-test with SPSS 17.0, and statistical significance was set as alpha < 0.05. RESULTS: Significant difference was found between sound leg and injured leg under both eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions (eyes-open: sound leg 0.051±0.018 vs injured leg 0.072±0.034, p=0.027; eyes-closed: sound leg 0.100±0.031 vs injured leg 0.123±0.038, p=0.001, unit: g). Significant difference was also found between eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions under both single leg standing with sound leg and injured leg (sound leg: eyes-open 0.051±0.018 vs eyes-closed 0.100±0.031, p<0.001; injured leg: eyes-open 0.072±0.034 vs eyes-closed 0.123±0.038, p=0.001, unit: g). The results demonstrate that the smartphone can be used to discriminate the different performance between sound leg and injured leg, and also between eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions. CONCLUSION: The study shows that smartphone may have the potential to be a convenient, easy-used and valid tool for assessment of postural control ability on chronic ankle instability.

Abstract:The impact of toxic heavy metals on the environment is a significant global issue. This study's main goal is to remove Cr(VI) from water by using biodegradable materials like chitosan and mature Plumeria alba leaves as a composite biosorbent. The newly prepared biosorbent is characterized by BET, FTIR, SEM, EDX, and TGA & DTA analysis. The porous morphology, surface characteristics, crystalline nature, and thermal stability were evaluated. To determine the actual mechanism underlying the first stages of the sorption process, several variables, including contact time, solution pH, adsorbent dose, and beginning metal ion concentration, are used to test the biosorbent's adsorption capacity. It was discovered that pH 4, adsorbent dose 0.5g, adsorption time 120 min, and Cr(VI) concentration 25 mg L-1 were the ideal operating conditions. There was a 92% maximum elimination of Cr(VI). The Langmuir model was utilized to obtain a qmax value of 366.3 mg/g. The biosorbent offered a superior match to pseudo-second-order kinetic models and the Langmuir isotherm model. and ΔH0 negative values fell and were shown to be exothermic and spontaneous during the entire process of adsorption. The experimental investigation suggested that the bio-sorbent may have developed into a promising, environmentally friendly adsorbent.

Abstract:Efficient removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution in both batch and continuous adsorption modes by a cationic hydrogel microsphere (CHMS) adsorbent prepared by inverse suspension polymerization and freeze‐drying. Herein, a cationic hydrogel microsphere (CHMS) was prepared by inverse suspension polymerization and freeze‐drying and was applied to the adsorptive removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from aqueous solution. Morphological characterization shows that there are lots of folds and pores on the surface of CHMS with a unique petal‐like appearance. According to the chemical structure analysis, CHMS contains plenty of functional groups such as amine and hydroxyl groups. These features give CHMS a larger specific surface area, faster adsorption rate, and higher adsorption capacity than the conventional cationic hydrogel microparticle (CHMP) adsorbent. The adsorption of Cr(VI) in water by CHMS is mainly based on the combination of electrostatic adsorption and redox reaction, with the electrostatic interaction between the protonated amine and Cr(VI) serving as the predominant adsorption mechanism. Experimental results reveal that CHMS can efficiently remove Cr(VI) from simulated wastewater in both batch and continuous adsorption modes, which is primarily due to its distinctive surface morphology and rich functional groups. Furthermore, the common coexisting metal ions in Cr(VI)‐containing wastewater have no substantial negative influence on the adsorption. Therefore, it can be concluded that CHMS has a promising application prospect in the treatment of Cr(VI)‐containing wastewater.

Abstract:The non-biodegradability and microtoxicity of harmful anions in water, especially hexavalent chromium, have caused serious damage to the environment and human health. Therefore, research on efficient and environmentally friendly adsorbents for the removal of Cr(VI) becomes essential. In this paper, we propose for the first time to effectively remove Cr(VI) anion by aminated graphene oxide/cellulose oxide nanocellulose/sodium alginate porous materials (NH 2 -GO/NOC/SA) prepared by cross-linking aminated graphene oxide with biomass materials (oxidized nanocellulose and sodium alginate) via epichlorohydrin. The porous materials were characterized using tools such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electroluminescence (EDS), Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The optimum adsorption performance of the porous material was obtained by varying the initial concentration (from 100 to 500 mg/L), pH (from 1 to 8), and adsorption time (from 15 min to 72 h) of the Cr(VI) solution. The analysis of the adsorption data showed that the adsorption process was more in line with the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation and Langmuir isotherm model, and the equilibrium adsorption amount reached 394.1 mg/g. The adsorption of Cr(VI) on the NH 2 -GO/NOC/SA porous material was achieved by electrostatic interactions, Schiff base chemical bonding energy, ion exchange, protonation, precipitation, and hydrogen bonding. In conclusion, the experimental results show that the biomass adsorbent NH2-GO/NOC/SA can be consistently applied to remove Cr(VI) from wastewater.

Abstract:A novel adsorbent was obtained by using a typical solid waste electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) and a green material chitosan (CS) for the Cr(VI) removal from the aqueous environment. The tagged mineral phases and elements in the EMR were successfully detected in the synthesized composites according to the XRD and SEM-EDS results. Furthermore, the characteristic peak of metal and hydroxyl group binding appeared at 779 cm −1 , and the Si-O bending vibration at 454 cm −1 in the FT-IR pattern of the synthesized composites indicating the functional Fe and Mn hydroxyl groups and the silicates in EMR were all successfully grafted onto the CS. This obtained composite showed a high Cr adsorption capacity with a maximum adsorption capacity of 133.64 mg·g −1 , and the Cr(VI) removal rate could maintain a high level of 94.6 % after five adsorption–desorption cycles. Its adsorption isotherm matched with the Langmuir model, and the adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-first-order model. According to the response surface CCD model, the optimal conditions for Cr(VI) removal were pH at 2, contact time at 53.0 min, and initial concentration at 100 mg·L -1 . For the removal mechanism, Cr(VI) anions could be easily electrostatic adsorbed by –NH 3 + , or chelated with the Fe and Mn oxides. Meanwhile, partial Cr(VI) (∼35.7 %) was reduced into Cr(III) by the abundant hydroxyl group of chitosan on the surface of the as-obtained materials, and then the free Cr(III) could be easily chelated with three chitosan monomers. This work opens up a novel and green methodology to modify chitosan and reuse the solid waste EMR.

Abstract:The removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from industrial wastewater has always been an important issue in the field of environment and human health. However, there are still challenges in achieving effective adsorption of Cr(VI) by adsorbents in slightly neutral environments. The resource utilization of organic wastewater is also a current research focus and difficulty in the academic community. In this study, molasses wastewater was used as a carbon and nitrogen source to synthesize magnetic amino hydrochar (MMHC) through a hydrothermal carbonization process. In order to further enhance the adsorption performance of MMHC for Cr(VI) in slightly neutral environments, a two-step grafting strategy was employed to introduce quaternary ammonium groups with N+ sites onto the MMHC substrate, resulting in the surface modification of MMHC with dual amino groups (MMHCQA). The introduction of dual amino groups not only increases the adsorption sites on the surface of MMHCQA, but also raises the point of zero charge of MMHCQA, ensuring its excellent adsorption performance for Cr(VI) in higher pH environments. At pH 6, the adsorption capacity of MMHCQA are 3 times higher than MMHC. This work elucidated the adsorption process using adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics, and adsorption isotherms, and fitted the three major factors (pH, Cr(VI) concentration and temperature) influencing MMHCQA adsorption performance through response surface analysis, revealing that pH is the decisive factor affecting MMHCQA adsorption performance. Furthermore, MMHCQA can be stably reused for at least 5 cycles.

Abstract:In present study the potential of a new biosorbent obtained from mangosteen peel was investigated for the removal of hexavalent chromium and trivalent chromium from the aqueous solutions. The biosorbent was modified by using concentrated sulphuric acid as the crosslinking reagent. Various batch experiments were carried out testing different values of several parameters such as pH, contact time, adsorbent dosages, and metal ion concentration to identify the optimum conditions. The effect of these parameters on the adsorption capacity and selectivity was studied. Results showed that optimum pH for hexavalent chromium adsorption was 3.0 and adsorption equilibrium was attained in 120 min. The adsorption data were found to fit Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order equation. The adsorption mechanism for hexavalent chromium was found to be a complex process involving esterification, reduction and ion exchange, while cation exchange is the main route for trivalent chromium adsorption. From the above results, the crosslinked mangosteen peel gel appears to be a potential low-cost and effective adsorbent for hexavalent chromium and trivalent chromium removal from the waste water.
