Abstract:The pin-shaped ZnO-ZnSe nanowire arrays on the surface of a carbon fiber (CF/ZnO-ZnSe) were synthesized via two-step hydrothermal method. Based on a single CF/ZnO-ZnSe on a polymer substrate, a flexible nanogenerator device was fabricated which produced high-output current about 333 mu A when the device was subjected to a -0.55% tensile strain and the current was enhanced by as much as 66%. The superior piezoelectric performance is derived from the piezopotential in ZnO nanowire arrays induced by the compressive strain or tensile strain, which lowers or raises the barrier height and increases or decreases the current density at the ZnO-ZnSe heterojunction interface. This kind of CF/ZnO-ZnSe bilayer structure has a great potential for nanogenerator device and this result opens up the path for practical applications of piezoelectric nanogenerator. Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) atomic crystals have triggered significant excitement due to their rich physics as well as potential industrial applications. The possibility of a molecular counterpart with scalable processability and superior performance is intriguing from both fundamental and applied perspectives. Here, we present the freestanding 2D molecular charge-transfer bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene-C-60 crystals prepared by a modified Langmuir-Blodgett method, with precisely controlled few-layer thickness and centimeter-scale lateral dimension. The interconversion of intrinsic excited process, the long-range ordering and anisotropic stacking arrangement of the molecular layered crystals generate external stimuli responsive behaviors and anisotropic spin-charge conversion with magnetic energy conversion ability, as well as a superior UV photosensitivity. Moreover, the 2D freestanding crystals demonstrate superior magneto-electrical properties. These results suggest that a new class of 2D atomically thin molecular crystals with novel electronic, optical and magnetic properties have great potential for spintronic, energy and sensor applications.

Abstract:Efficient utilization of electrostatic charges is paramount for numerous applications, from printing to kinetic energy harvesting. However, existing technologies predominantly focus on the static qualities of these charges, neglecting their dynamic capabilities as carriers for energy conversion. Herein, we report a paradigm-shifting strategy that orchestrates the swift transit of surface charges, generated through contact electrification, via a freely moving droplet. This technique ingeniously creates a besptengngoke charged surface which, in tandem with a droplet acting as a transfer medium to the ground, facilitates targeted charge displacement and amplifies electrical energy collection. The spontaneously generated electric field between the charged surface and needle tip, along with the enhanced water ionization under the electric field, proves pivotal in facilitating controlled charge transfer. By coupling the effects of charge self-transfer, contact electrification, and electrostatic induction, a dual-electrode droplet-driven triboelectric nanogenerator (DD–TENG) is designed to harvest the water-related energy, exhibiting a two-order-of-magnitude improvement in electrical output compared to traditional single-electrode systems. Our strategy establishes a fundamental groundwork for efficient water drop energy acquisition, offering deep insights and substantial utility for future interdisciplinary research and applications in energy science.
Direct Current Electricity Generation from Dynamic Polarized Water–Semiconductor Interface

Abstract:Liquid electricity generator and hydrovoltaic technology have received numerous attentions, which can be divided into horizontal movement generator and vertical movement generator. The horizontal movement generator is limited for powering the integrated and miniaturized energy chip as the current output direction is depending on the moving direction of the water droplet, which means a sustainable and continuous direct-current (DC) electricity output can be hardly achieved because of the film of limited length. On the other hand, the existing vertical movement generators include triboelectricity or humidity gradient-based liquid electricity generator, where the liquid or water resource must be sustainably supplied to ensure continuous current output. Herein, we have designed an integratable vertical generator by sandwiching water droplets with semiconductor and metal, such as graphene or aluminum. This generator, named as polarized liquid molecular generator (PLMG), directly converts the lateral kinetic energy of water droplet into vertical DC electricity with an output voltage of up to 1.0 V from the dynamic water-semiconductor interface. The fundamental discovery of PLMG is related to the non-symmetric structure of liquid molecules, such as water and alcohols, which can be polarized under the guidance of built-in field caused by the Fermi level difference between metal and semiconductor, while the symmetric liquid molecules cannot produce any electricity on the opposite. Integratable PLMG with a large output power of 90 nW and voltage of 2.7 V has been demonstrated, meanwhile its small internal resistance of 250 kilohm takes a huge advantage in resistance matching with the impedance of electron components. The PLMG shows potential application value in the Internet of Things (IoTs) after proper miniaturization and integration.

Abstract:Relying on the piezopotential created in ZnO under straining, nanogenerators, piezotronics and piezo-phototronics developed based on laterally bonded nanowires on a polymer substrate have been reviewed. The principle of the nanogenerator is a transient flow of electrons in external load as driven by the piezopotential created by dynamic straining. By integrating the contribution made by millions of nanowires, the output voltage has been raised to 1.2V. Consequently, self-powered nanodevices have been demonstrated. This is an important platform technology for the future sensor network and the internet of things. Alternatively, the piezopotential can act as a gate voltage that can tune/gate the transport process of the charge carriers in the nanowire, which is a gate-electrode free field effect transistor (FET). The device fabricated based on this principle is called the piezotronic device. Piezo-phototronic effect is about the tuning and controlling of electro-optical processes by strain induced piezopotential. The piezotronic, piezophotonic and pieozo-phototronic devices are focused on low frequency applications in areas involving mechanical actions, such as MEMS/NEMS, nanorobotics, sensors, actuators and triggers.
Highly Semiconducting One-Dimensional Porous ZnO Nanorod Array Nanogenerators for Mechanical Energy Harvesting Functions

Abstract:The development of energy harvesters based on inexpensive inorganic materials has attracted considerable attention to envisage next-generation self-powered electronic devices. In this work, we presented surface modification of ZnO nanorods (NRs) by thermochemical reaction using photoresist (PR) as an etching source. The morphological and microstructural properties of surface-etched ZnO NRs (M: ZnO) were systematically studied in detail through SEM and HRTEM. The morphological results show that the surface-etched NRs possess nanofiber-like porous structures and are penetrated throughout the NRs with high surface area. We fabricated triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) using M: ZnO NRs with poly (dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) as negative triboelectric material and mica as positive triboelectric material. The prepared M: ZnO NR TENG successfully delivered an output voltage of up to 20 V and a current density of 3.2 μA cm−2, which is ∼1.5 times higher than those observed for smooth ZnO NRs, respectively. The prepared M: ZnO NR TENG device can be able to lit 24 red light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as the power source. Finally, to demonstrate the practical applications of M: ZnO NR TENG, it was attached to the human body (elbow, knee, wrist, and heel) and efficiently harvested the energy from daily human activities.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel flexible nanogenerator (FNG) made of zinc-oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) and multiwall-carbon nanotubes (MW-CNTs) is presented. In this structure, ZnO NPs and MW-CNTs are mixed with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) uniformly to form an entire flexible nanogenerator. Serial tests illustrate that the output voltage and power density are as high as 7.5 V and 18.75 μW per cycle, respectively. Furthermore, by foot stamp on the FNG, a peak voltage as high as 30 V can be generated. Comparing to the control samples, it is also proved that adding MW-CNTs into the matrix could significantly enhance the output voltage from 0.8 to 7.5 V. In summary, our work indicates that the realization of flexible nanogenerators made of ZnO NPs and MW-CNTs is technologically feasible, which may bring out some important and interesting applications in energy harvesting.

Abstract:We have developed a nanowire nanogenerator that is driven by an ultrasonic wave to produce continuous direct-current output. The nanogenerator was fabricated with vertically aligned zinc oxide nanowire arrays that were placed beneath a zigzag metal electrode with a small gap. The wave drives the electrode up and down to bend and/or vibrate the nanowires. A piezoelectric-semiconducting coupling process converts mechanical energy into electricity. The zigzag electrode acts as an array of parallel integrated metal tips that simultaneously and continuously create, collect, and output electricity from all of the nanowires. The approach presents an adaptable, mobile, and cost-effective technology for harvesting energy from the environment, and it offers a potential solution for powering nanodevices and nanosystems.

Abstract:Molecular thermal motion has been studied but yet never been utilized as an energy source. In this work, we demonstrate that the energy of liquid molecular thermal motion can be converted into electrical energy by a novel harvesting device, the molecular thermal motion harvester (MTMH). The MTMH was made by using two ZnO-based nano-arrays and one of which was gold coated to form a Schottky junction. The assembled electrodes were immersed in different liquid phase environments. The device was demonstrated to convert the molecule thermal energy of the liquid into a continuous and stable electric current. The output voltage and current can achieve 2.28 mV and 2.47 nA, respectively, and increase with the liquid temperatures. This strategy opens new insights into the development of mini- and micro-scale energy sources, and it can be expected the MTMH will have broad applications in the future.

Abstract:The direct conversion of mechanical energy into electricity by nanomaterial-based devices offers potential for green energy harvesting1–3. A conventional triboelectric nanogenerator converts frictional energy into electricity by producing alternating current (a.c.) triboelectricity. However, this approach is limited by low current density and the need for rectification2. Here, we show that continuous direct-current (d.c.) with a maximum density of 106 A m−2 can be directly generated by a sliding Schottky nanocontact without the application of an external voltage. We demonstrate this by sliding a conductive-atomic force microscope tip on a thin film of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). Finite element simulation reveals that the anomalously high current density can be attributed to the non-equilibrium carrier transport phenomenon enhanced by the strong local electrical field (105−106 V m−2) at the conductive nanoscale tip4. We hypothesize that the charge transport may be induced by electronic excitation under friction, and the nanoscale current−voltage spectra analysis indicates that the rectifying Schottky barrier at the tip–sample interface plays a critical role in efficient d.c. energy harvesting. This concept is scalable when combined with microfabricated or contact surface modified electrodes, which makes it promising for efficient d.c. triboelectricity generation.

Abstract:Strong non-covalent cation-π interactions were discovered about three decades ago. However, the application of such interfacial behavior on carbon nanomaterials has been investigated only in recent years. In particular, with the increasing interests in graphene, efforts have been made to promote the energy generation through macroscopically shifts of the liquid/solid boundary over the carbon surface, yet the effective ways to avoid the physical wearing caused by the macroscopically shifts still lack. In the present work, a high-efficiency humidity driven electric nanogenerator based on the interfacial cation-π interaction was reported. The generator was prepared using the wrinkled graphene with intentionally increased defects and uniformly distributed wrinkles for ultrafast water evaporation, preventing excessive water accumulation and deposition of well-distributed salt crystals. Electricity was generated by manipulating the formation of ionic liquid microdroplets on the graphene surface via water adsorption and desorption of salt crystals as the humidity varied. Our work provided a new strategy for the application of strong cation−π interactions, such as energy generation, gas sensing and biointerface for cell stimulation, with readily achievable stimuli, high stability, comparable efficiency and long lifetime.

Abstract:Harvesting energy from environment is the current focus of scientific community. Here, we demonstrate a graphene nanogenerator, which is based on moving van der Waals heterostructure formed between graphene and two dimensional (2D) graphene oxide (GO). This nanogenerator can convert mechanical energy into electricity with a voltage output of around 10 mV. Systematic experiments reveal the generated electricity originates from the coulomb interaction induced momentum transfer between 2D GO and holes in graphene. 2D boron nitride was also demonstrated to be effective in the framework of moving van der Waals heterostructure nanogenerator. This investigation of nanogenerator based on the interaction between 2D macromolecule materials will be important to understand the origin of the flow-induced potential in nanomaterials and may have great potential in practical applications. Abstract:We present a simple, cost-effective, robust, and scalable approach for fabricating a nanogenerator that gives an output power strong enough to continuously drive a commercial liquid crystal display. Utilizing the conical shape of the as-grown ZnO nanowires, a nanogenerator is fabricated by simply dispersing them onto a flat polymer film to form a rational "composite" structure. It is suggested that the geometry induced unipolar assembly of the conical nano-wires in such a composite structure results in a macroscopic piezoelectric potential across its thickness by introducing a mechanical deformation, which may be responsible for driving the flow of the inductive charges between the top and bottom electrodes. A compressive strain of 0.11 % at a straining rate of 3.67% s(-1) produces an output voltage up to 2 V (equivalent open circuit voltage of 3.3 V). This is a practical and versatile technology with the potential for powering small size personal electronics.

Abstract:ZnO-based nanogenerators with excellent performance and convenient functionalization are particularly desirable for self-powered technology, which is however difficult to achieve simultaneously in traditional piezoelectric ZnO nanogenerators. Here, we report a design of electrostatic ZnO nanogenerator by virtue of a type-II ZnO/ZnS core/shell nanostructure electrets, which can turn acoustic waves into electric power with an energy conversion efficiency of 2.2%. The ZnO/ZnS core/shell electrets are charged by ultraviolet irradiation with a long-term stability of the electrostatic charges under ambient condition. The electronic and atomic structure evolution in the charged ZnO/ZnS core/shell electrets are also discussed by detailed experimental and theoretical investigations. This design opens up an alternative path for fabricating robust ZnO-based nanogenerator for future nanotechnology application. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:Droplet vibration nanogenerator is a promising technology that can transform kinetic energy into electric energy. In this paper, a vibration droplet nanogenerator based on lead zirconate titanate (PZT) (PZT-VDNG) is proposed, which utilizes the change in double electron layer area at the droplet/PZT interface, hence an extraordinary charge variation, induced by mechanical vibrations. Our approach innovatively combines a high fixed surface charge density with ionic solutions to significantly enhance energy conversion efficiency. A theoretical model of the PZT-VDNG is established, showing excellent consistence with the experimental results. The energy conversion efficiency and its correlation with the materials involved, device structure and circuits used, are investigated in detail. Under the optimal conditions of a vibration frequency of 5 Hz, an amplitude of 2 mm, and a droplet size of 40 μL, a short-circuit current output of 31.43 μA and an open-circuit voltage of 1.5 V are obtained by a single vibration of a droplet, respectively, 111 and 37.5 times larger as compared to those from a VDNG with PTFE polymer layer. This marks a significant leap in the efficiency and potential applications of vibration nanogenerators.

Abstract:Nanosized energy storage, energy harvesting, and functional devices are the three key components for integrated self-power systems. Here, we report on nanoscale electrochemical devices with a nearly 3-fold-enhanced stored charge under the field effect. We demonstrated the field-effect transistor can not only work as a functional component in nanodevices but also serve as an amplifier for the nanosized energy-storage blocks. This unusual increase in energy storage is attributed to having a wide range of accessible electronic density of states (EDOS), and, hence, redox reactions are occurring within the nanowire and not being confined to the surface. Initial results with MoS2 suggest that this field-effect-modulated energy-storage mechanism may also apply to many other redox-active materials. Our work demonstrates the novel application of the field effect in energy-storage devices as a universal strategy to improve ion diffusion, which can greatly enhance the charge storage ability of nanoscale devices.

Abstract:A spring-connected nanogenerator (NG) based on zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) and a multiwall carbon nanotube (MW-CNT) is presented. In this structure, two flexible layers are combined by four springs while the flexible layers are achieved by uniformmixing of ZnONPs, MW-CNT in the polydimethylsiloxane. Serial tests illustrate that voltage and power density generated by this device reach up to 9 V and 27 mu W per cycle respectively. This state-of-the-art NG with high performance could open wide applications in self-power systems and energy harvesting.

Abstract:The likely goal of nanotechnology is the integration of individual nanodevices into a nanosystem, which includes the nanodevice(s), power harvesting unit, data processing logic system, and possibly wireless communication unit. A nanosystem requires a nanoscale power source to make the entire package extremely small and high performance. The nanofuel and nanobiofuel cells developed here represent a new self-powering approach in nanotechnology, and their power output is high enough to drive nanodevices for performing self-powered sensing. This study shows the feasibility of building self-powered nanosystems for biological sciences, environmental monitoring, defense technology and even personal electronics.

Abstract:Current approaches for electric power generation from nanoscale conducting or semi-conducting layers in contact with moving aqueous droplets are promising as they show efficiencies of around 30 percent, yet, even the most successful ones pose challenges regarding fabrication and scaling. Here, we report stable, all-inorganic single-element structures synthesized in a single step that generate electrical current when alternating salinity gradients flow along its surface in a liquid flow cell. 10 nm to 30 nm thin nanolayers of iron, vanadium, or nickel produce several tens of mV and several microA cm^-2 at aqueous flow velocities of just a few cm s^-1. The principle of operation is strongly sensitive to charge-carrier motion in the thermal oxide nano-overlayer that forms spontaneously in air and then self terminates. Indeed, experiments suggest a role for intra-oxide electron transfer for Fe, V, and Ni nanolayers, as their thermal oxides contain several metal oxidation states, whereas controls using Al or Cr nanolayers, which self-terminate with oxides that are redox inactive under the experimental conditions, exhibit dramatically diminished performance.
