Abstract:Inspired by biological systems that have the inherent skill to generate considerable bioelectricity from the salt content in fluids with highly selective ion channels and pumps on cell membranes, herein, a fully abiotic single-pore nanofluidic energy-harvesting system that efficiently converts Gibbs free energy in the form of a salinity gradient into electricity is demonstrated. The maximum power output with the individual nanopore approaches similar to 26 pW. By exploiting parallelization, the estimated power density can be enhanced by one to three orders over previous ion-exchange membranes. A theoretical description is proposed to explain the power generation with the salinity-gradient-driven nanofluidic system. Calculation results suggest that the electric-power generation and its efficiency can be further optimized by enhancing the surface-charge density (up to 100 mC m(-2)) and adopting the appropriate nanopore size (between 10 and 50 nm). This facile and cost-efficient energy-harvesting system has the potential to power biomedical tiny devices or construct future clean-energy recovery plants.

Abstract:In nature, hierarchically assembled nanoscale ionic conductors, such as ion channels and ion pumps, become the structural and functional basis of bioelectric phenomena. Recently, ion‐channel‐mimetic nanofluidic systems have been built into reconstructed 2D nanomaterials for energy conversion and storage as effective as the electrogenic cells. Here, a 2D‐material‐based nanofluidic reverse electrodialysis system, containing cascading lamellar nanochannels in oppositely charged graphene oxide membrane (GOM) pairs, is reported for efficient osmotic energy conversion. Through preassembly modification, the surface charge polarity of the 2D nanochannels can be efficiently tuned from negative (−123 mC m −2 ) to positive (+147 mC m −2 ), yielding strongly cation‐ or anion‐selective GOMs. The complementary two‐way ion diffusion leads to an efficient charge separation process, creating superposed electrochemical potential difference and ionic flux. An output power density of 0.77 W m −2 is achieved by controlled mixing concentrated (0.5 m ) and diluted ionic solutions (0.01 m ), which is about 54% higher than using commercial ion exchange membranes. Tandem alternating GOM pairs produce high voltage up to 2.7 V to power electronic devices. Besides simple salt solutions, various complex electrolyte solutions can be used as energy sources. These findings provide insights to construct cascading nanofluidic circuits for energy, environmental, and healthcare applications.

Abstract:Herein, we demonstrate a distinctive energy harvesting method that electricity can be generated from the ionic solution flowing through the interstices between packed three-dimensional graphene powders. A constructed electrokinetic nanogenerator with an effective flow area of ∼0.34 cm2can generate a large current of 91.33 nA under 10-6M NaCl solution with a flow rate of 0.4 ml min-1, corresponding to a maximum power density of 0.45μW m-2. Besides, it shows a good linear relationship between the streaming current and the flow rate, suggesting that it could be used as a self-powered micro-flowmeter. These results provide a convenient way for clean energy harvesting and show a bright future for self-powered systems.

Abstract:Electricity harvest from ubiquitous water has been endeavored, using nanogenerators based on carbon nanomaterials, to acquire renewable and clean energy and cope with fossil depletion and pollution as well. Meanwhile, though many biological organisms can harness water for bioelectricity, it is still challenging to produce biological nanogenerators based on biological nanomaterials with billions of tons of annual production in nature. Herein biological nanofibrils, including cellulose, chitin, silk fibroin, and amyloid, are produced either by liquid‐exfoliation of biomasses or by supramolecular assembly of bio‐macromolecules. With the intrinsic hydrophilicity and charged states, they can capture moisture from air and form hydrated nanochannels, in analogue to ionic channels of cytomembranes. When exposing their aerogels to moist air flow, there is a balance of water absorption and evaporation, thus producing a streaming potential and an open‐circuit voltage across the aerogel. With flexibility, sustainability, biocompatibility, and biodegradability, these biological nanogenerators can harvest electricity from moist air flow in nature (e.g., wind, respiration and perspiration) and in industry, and serve for environmentally‐friendly, low‐cost, high‐efficiency, wearable, and miniaturized power devices.

Abstract:The salinity gradient between seawater and river water has been identified as a promising, clean, renewable, and sustainable energy source that can be converted into electricity using ion-selective membranes in a reverse electrodialysis (RED) configuration. However, the major hindrance to current salinity gradient power (SGP) conversion is its poor energy efficiency due to the use of low-performance membrane processes, which affords power for neither miniaturized devices nor industrial-level applications. Nanofluidics, which combines strong confinement and surface charge effects at the nanoscale, contributes to novel transport properties, including excellent ion selectivity and high ion throughput; thus, nanofluidics may lead to technological breakthroughs and act as an emerging platform for harnessing SGP. Recently, two-dimensional (2D) materials have provided impressive energy extraction performance and further insight into fundamental transport mechanisms and theoretical feasibility. To reach the commercialization benchmark and real-world applications, an array of nanopores and channels that can be scaled up to industrial sizes is in high demand; additionally, it remains challenging to develop macroscale nanofluidic membranes that meet the "selectivity versus throughput" dual requirement. In the first section, we start with our understanding of the underlying mechanism of ion-channel interactions and transport characteristics in nanofluidic channel systems from the microscale to the macroscale. We review our recent efforts in this field by constructing a heterojunction with asymmetric ion transport behavior that generates rectification of the ion flux and creates an osmotic diode, which is composed of two nanofluidic layers with opposite polar charges and different chemical compositions. Another efficient way to improve the performance of the system is introducing charged functional materials intercalated into laminar 2D nanosheets. The intercalated nanofluidic material can be explained by two classical models to account for the synergistic effects that (i) improve the stability and mechanical properties of 2D materials with a fixed interlayer spacing and (ii) provide space charge for modulating ion diffusion; both of these effects contribute to its considerable energy conversion performance. Further, layer-by-layer membranes are superior to traditional membranes consisting of a simple stack because they retain their repulsion effect toward co-ions, largely strengthening the efficiency of ion separation and conversion. In particular, we highlight our views on the role of the 2D phase structure (e.g., semiconductor 2H phase and metallic 1T phase) in which the two phases differ from each other in physical and chemical properties, including ionic conductance, surface charge, and wetting, thereby presenting a state-of-the-art avenue for controlling ion transport. In view of the nature of 2D materials, we also report improved osmotic energy harvesting by exploiting the photoinduced heat gradient and electrons that increase ion mobility and surface charge, respectively. Finally, we point out specific research topics in which a combined project can certainly come into the limelight. For example, we discuss the combination of SGP with desalination systems and water splitting. We expect that this Account will stimulate further efforts toward functionalized 2D nanoporous materials and facilitate interdisciplinary efforts in chemistry, material engineering, environmental science, and nanotechnology.

“Island-Bridge”-structured Nanofluidic Membranes for High-Performance Aqueous Energy Conversion and Storage

Abstract:The attainment of carbon neutrality requires the development of aqueous energy conversion and storage devices. However, these devices exhibit limited performance due to the permeability–selectivity trade-off of permselective membranes as core components. Herein, we report the application of a synergistic approach utilizing two-dimensional nanoribbons-entangled nanosheets to rationally balance the permeability and selectivity in permselective membranes. The nanoribbons and nanosheets can be self-assembled into a nanofluidic membrane with a distinctive “island-bridge” configuration, where the nanosheets serve as isolated islands offering adequate ionic selectivity owing to their high surface charge density, meanwhile bridge-like nanoribbons with low surface charge density but high aspect ratio remarkably enhance the membrane’s permeability and water stability, as verified by molecular simulations and experimental investigations. Using this approach, we developed a high-performance graphene oxide (GO) nanosheet/GO nanoribbon (GONR) nanofluidic membrane and achieved an ultrahigh power density of 18.1 W m–2 in a natural seawater|river water osmotic power generator, along with a high Coulombic efficiency and an extended lifespan in zinc metal batteries. The validity of our island-bridge structural design is also demonstrated for other nanosheet/nanoribbon composite membranes, providing a promising path for developing reliable aqueous energy conversion and storage devices.
A nanofluidic chemoelectrical generator with enhanced energy harvesting by ion-electron Coulomb drag

Abstract:A sufficiently high current output of nano energy harvesting devices is highly desired in practical applications, while still a challenge. Theoretical evidence has demonstrated that Coulomb drag based on the ion-electron coupling interaction, can amplify current in nanofluidic energy generation systems, resulting in enhanced energy harvesting. However, experimental validation of this concept is still lacking. Here we develop a nanofluidic chemoelectrical generator (NCEG) consisting of a carbon nanotube membrane (CNTM) sandwiched between metal electrodes, in which spontaneous redox reactions between the metal and oxygen in electrolyte solution enable the movement of ions within the carbon nanotubes. Through Coulomb drag effect between moving ions in these nanotubes and electrons within the CNTM, an amplificated current of 1.2 mA cm-2 is generated, which is 16 times higher than that collected without a CNTM. Meanwhile, one single NCEG unit can produce a high voltage of ~0.8 V and exhibit a linear scalable performance up to tens of volts. Different from the other Coulomb drag systems that need additional energy input, the NCEG with enhanced energy harvesting realizes the ion-electron coupling by its own redox reactions potential, which provides a possibility to drive multiple electronic devices for practical applications.

Abstract:Scavenging energy stored at the water/solid interface into electrical power by the natural water evaporation process provides a promising method to supply sustainable electricity for self-powered electronics. The main barriers constraining its applications are the limited materials availability and ambiguous underlying mechanisms, detrimental to the improvement of output power. Herein, we report a highly flexible and efficient evaporation-induced electricity generator (EIEG) that dexterously exploits the directional water capillary flow inside the silicon nanowires (SiNWs) mesh nanopores. Benefiting from the large surface/volume ratio and high surface potential of nanostructured SiNWs mesh film, an EIEG continuously delivers a high open-circuit voltage of ~1.5 V and a maximum power density of over 160 μW·cm−3, which surpasses the analogous flexible EIEGs. Moreover, the correlation between the output power and capillary flow direction, diffusion length, and velocity as well as the species and ionic strength of various liquids have been systematically explored to identify the mechanism underlying the power generation. This study not only provides an in-depth understanding of water/solid interactions but also spikes a green technique to fabricate flexible generators that tap energy from the copious water reservoir.

Abstract:Nanofluidic hybrid membranes integrated with asymmetrical surface charge, chemical composition, and geometric configuration exhibit unprecedented advantages in capturing the osmotic energy between river water and seawater. However, the output power is very restricted by the inefficient interfacial ion transport of the permselective membranes caused by the low-density pores and mismatch of the pore alignment. In this work, we developed a nanofluidic hybrid membrane constructed by ultrahigh pore-density covalent organic frameworks COF-LZU1 (Lan Zhou University-1) with the carbon nanotube/cellulose nanofiber (CNT-CNF) membrane. The COF-LZU1 layer possesses well-ordered and high-density pores, ensuring abundant selective ion transport. The CNT-CNF membrane functions as a robust support and also offers 3D charged space for the enhanced ion transport. The hybridization of the two layers dramatically increases the interfacial ion transport efficiency. Employing the COF-LZU1@CNT-CNF nanofluidic hybrid membrane to capture the osmotic energy stored between natural sea water and river water, a considerably high power density of 4.26 W m–2 is attained. This delicate design strategy offers ideas for the application of COF membranes in osmotic energy conversion.

Abstract:Osmotic power, also known as "blue energy", is a vast, sustainable and clean energy source that can be directly converted into electricity by nanofluidic membranes. However, the key technological bottleneck for large‐scale osmotic electricity is that macroscopic‐scale bulky membranes cannot synergistically satisfy the demands of high power density and low resistance without sacrificing scalability and mechanical robustness. Here, inspired by the anatomy and working principle of electric eels, which harness osmotic energy through embedded neuron‐mediated fibril nanochannels with nanoconfined transport dynamics. We engineer fibrous nanofluidic meta‐aerogel ion motors, 3D‐assembled from nanofluidic cable fibers with actuatable stimulation/transport "ion highways". The meta‐aerogel exhibits the integrated coupling effect of boosted ion propulsion and surface‐charge‐dominated selective ion transport. Driven by osmosis, the meta‐aerogel ion motor can produce an unprecedented output power density of up to 30.7 W m−2 under a 50‐fold salinity gradient. Advancing ultra‐selective ion transport in nanofluidic meta‐aerogels may provide a promising roadmap for blue energy harvesting. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

Abstract:Electric eels can convert ionic concentration gradients into a high-efficiency power via a large number of sub-2 nm transmembrane ion channels, which can exhibit high ion selectivity and strong diode-like ion rectification property. Inspired by this, herein, we report on a sub-2 nm scale ionic diode membrane, composed of an ultrathin (~110 nm) β-ketoenamine-linked two-dimensional covalent-organic framework (COF) membrane and a highly ordered alumina nanochannel membrane (ANM), for highly efficient osmotic energy harvesting. As verified by our experimental and simulation results, the heterostructured membrane with the features of asymmetric charges and pore sizes in two aligned COF (1.1 nm) and ANM (100 nm) channels is capable of highly rectifying ion transport even in high 0.5 M salt solution. Benefiting from the presence of abundant sub-2 nm COF-based ion channels and the strong ionic diode effect, an unprecedented power density of up to 27.8 W/m 2 is achieved by mixing the artificial salt-lake water and river water (500-fold NaCl gradient). This study will open new avenues of using the rectified ion channel-mimetic nanofluidic membrane as a new platform towards the exploration and development of an ultrahigh osmotic power generator.

Abstract:Ion transport in nanoconfinement exhibits significant features such as ionic rectification, ionic selectivity, and ionic gating properties, leading to the potential applications in desalination, water treatment, and energy conversion. Two-dimensional nanofluidics provide platforms to utilize this phenomenon for capturing osmotic energy. However, it is challenging to further improve the power output with inadequate charge density. Here we demonstrate a feasible strategy by employing Kevlar nanofiber as space charge donor and cross-linker to fabricate graphene oxide composite membranes. The coupling of space charge and surface charge, enabled by the stabilization of interlayer spacing, plays a key role in realizing high ion selectivity and the derived high-performance osmotic power conversion up to 5.06 W/m2. Furthermore, the output voltage of an ensemble of the membranes in series could reach 1.61 V, which can power electronic devices. The system contributes a further step toward the application of energy conversion.The composite membranes consist of GO and Kevlar nanofiber as space charge donor and cross-linker, realizing high-performance osmotic power conversion and a voltage of 1.61 V for light-emitting-diode use.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Two-dimensional nanofluidic channels are emerging candidates for capturing osmotic energy from salinity gradients. However, present two-dimensional nanofluidic architectures are generally constructed by simple stacking of pristine nanosheets with insufficient charge densities, and exhibit low-efficiency transport dynamics, consequently resulting in undesirable power densities (<1 W m−2). Here we demonstrate MXene/Kevlar nanofiber composite membranes as high-performance nanofluidic osmotic power generators. By mixing river water and sea water, the power density can achieve a value of approximately 4.1 W m−2, outperforming the state-of-art membranes to the best of our knowledge. Experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that the correlation between surface charge of MXene and space charge brought by nanofibers plays a key role in modulating ion diffusion and can synergistically contribute to such a considerable energy conversion performance. This work highlights the promise in the coupling of surface charge and space charge in nanoconfinement for energy conversion driven by chemical potential gradients.

Abstract:Abstract Generation of electricity from flowing salt water is extremely attractive as the resources are abundant and green. We propose a generator to harvest DC electricity from flowing ionic solution. The device consists of a substrate with fixed surface charges, a top electrode and a bottom electrode separated with a distance. The electrostatic field originated from the surface charges separates charges of opposite polarities in the solution, while the flow directs the charges to different electrodes in a closed circuit. By utilizing ultrahigh charge density of ferroelectric substrate and ionic solution, the device produces pulsed DC output for droplets and constant current for continuous flow. The output could be greatly enhanced by using substrates with high surface charge densities and high ion concentration solutions. It could also be scaled up by connecting the devices in series or parallel. This work provides a new strategy to harvest low hydrodynamic energy from sea.
The synergistic effect of space and surface charge on nanoconfined ion transport and nanofluidic energy harvesting

Abstract:Diverse nanoconfined ion transport behaviors have attracted increasing attention in constructing ion-channel-inspired nanoconfined systems for high nanofluidic energy conversion performance. Conventional nanofluidic systems cannot simultaneously obtain high ion-selectivity and high ion-flux in a large region due to the decreasing effect of the electrical double layer (EDL) formed on the charged surface. Here, space charge is introduced in the nanoconfined system to effectively solve this problem by employing the synergistic effect of surface and space charges. The charge effect contribution on controlled-ion-transport is further decoupled into surface charge, space charge and synergistic effects for the first time. The surface charge induces charge separation within the EDL in a smaller diameter channel while the space charge dominates the ion-selectivity by the ion-exchange mechanism in a larger diameter channel. The synergistic effect, contributed by EDL and ion-exchange effects, is extremely important in large (around 100 nm), short nanochannel (around 100 nm), and high concentration fold (around 1000-fold) conditions to achieve high ion-selectivity, ion-flux, and nanofluidic energy conversion performances, which is systematically analyzed by theoretical simulation results. These results reveal the mechanism for enhanced ion transport behaviors and provide a solid foundation for designing high-performance nanofluidic devices in fields of desalination, sensor, energy conversion and storage.

Abstract:With traditional fossil energy sources and energy storage technologies gradually unable to meet the needs of future portable flexible electronic devices, there is a growing interest in research of power sources with small sizes, high energy density, and durability. Here, inspired by the cell membrane potential in living species, we demonstrate a two-dimensional nanofluidic gradient structure (TNGS) by integrating a series of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced GO (rGO) in the order of the size of interlayer spacing along the horizontal direction. Through asymmetric adsorption of hygroscopic CaCl2 salt, a sustained built-in hygroscopic gradient is constructed in the TNGS. Driven by the built-in hygroscopic gradient, the TNGS not only offers a proton concentration gradient but promotes selective migration of Ca2+. Under the synergistic effect of the TNGS and redox reaction, the directional Ca2+ and proton transport is converted into electrical energy on electrodes. Under ambient humidity, such a solid-state power source (0.9 cm2 × 10 μm) can output a voltage of ∼1.35 V for over 100 h and a volumetric power density of ∼515 μW cm–3. This finding opens a universal avenue for harvesting hygro-ionic electricity and offers a constructive insight into designing portable, easy-preparation, and cost-effective self-powered devices.

Abstract:In nature, ultrafast signal transfer based on ion transport, which is the foundation of biological processes, commonly works in a hydrogel–water mixed mechanism. Inspired by organisms' hydrogel-based system, we introduce hydrogel into nanofluidics to prepare a hydrogel hybrid membrane. The introduction of a space charged hydrogel improves the ion selectivity evidently. Also, a power generator based on the hydrogel hybrid membrane shows an excellent energy conversion property; a maximum power density up to 11.72 W/m2 is achieved at a 500-fold salinity gradient. Furthermore, the membrane shows excellent mechanical properties. These values are achievable, which indicates our membrane's huge potential applications in osmotic energy conversion.Our robust hydrogel hybrid membrane, which works in an organism-like hydrogel−water ambient, shows excellent ion selectivity and high-power output.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Surfactant‐Assisted Sulfonated Covalent Organic Nanosheets: Extrinsic Charge for Improved Ion Transport and Salinity‐Gradient Energy Harvesting

Abstract:Charge‐governed ion transport is the vital property of nanofluidic channels for salinity‐gradient energy harvesting and other electrochemical energy conversion technologies. Two‐dimensional nanofluidic channels constructed by nanosheets exhibit great superiority in ion selectivity, but a high ion transport rate remains challenging due to the insufficiency of intrinsic surface charge density in nanoconfinement. Herein, we demonstrate extrinsic surface charge into nanofluidic channels composed of surfactant‐assisted sulfonated covalent organic nanosheets (SCONs), which enable tunable ion transport behaviors. The polar moiety of surfactant is embedded in SCONs to adjust in‐plane surface charges, and the aggregation of non‐polar moiety results in the sol‐to‐gel transformation of SCON solution for membrane fabrication. The combination endows SCON/surfactant membranes with considerable water‐resistance, and the designable extrinsic charges promise fast ion transport and high ion selectivity. Additionally, the SCON/surfactant membrane, serving as a power generator, exhibits huge potential in harvesting salinity‐gradient energy where corresponding output power density can reach up to 9.08 W m−2 under a 50‐fold salinity gradient (0.5 M NaCl|0.01 M NaCl). Abstract:Natural sunlight is one kind of renewable energy that is considered likely to be ubiquitous at the river-sea junction. Ingeniously engineering a photoassisted enhanced electricity capture facility based on an artificial nano-porous membrane, is a necessity. Herein, a proof-of-concept system is constructed, wherein cation-selective photoresponsive porphyrin/alumina nanochannels are entrusted with cationic selectivity and extraordinary photoelectric response, thus it is available to synergistically convert salinity gradient and solar energy into high electric energy. Depending solely on excellent cationic selectivity of nanochannels, the salinity-gradient-driven membrane system can capture high power output of 2.16 W/m2. And harvested power of the generator with the help of photo is elevated to 4.56 W/m2. Resulted total transmembrane ionic current (Itotal) is traceable to a smooth cooperative effort of diffusion current (Idiff) and photo-induced ionic current (Iphoto). Benefiting from the accumulation characters of ionic current, the electricity generator with the modulation of concentration gradient and varying-intensity photo stimulus can achieve a multivalued conduction including current and power increase. The general nanofluidic system paves the way for other multi-functional membranes that simultaneously utilize various clean sources to potentially improve entire electricity output.

Abstract:Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) plays various roles in the regulation of cell growth as a lipid mediator. We studied the effect of LPA on intracellular Ca(2+) concentration ([Ca2+]i) with Fura-2 in the neural retina of chick embryo during neurogenesis. Bath application of LPA (1-100 microM) to the embryonic day 3 (E3) chick retina caused an increase in [Ca2+](i) in a dose-dependent manner, with an EC(50) value of 9.2 microM. The Ca(2+) rise was also evoked in a Ca(2+)-free medium, suggesting that release of Ca(2+) from intracellular Ca(2+) stores (Ca(2+) mobilization) was induced by LPA. U-73122, a blocker of phospholipase C (PLC), inhibited the Ca(2+) rise to LPA. Pertussis toxin partially inhibited the Ca(2+) rise to LPA, indicating that G(i)/G(o) protein was at least partially involved in the LPA response. The developmental profile of the LPA response was studied from E3 to E13. The Ca(2+) rise to LPA declined drastically from E3 to E7, in parallel with decrease in mitotic activity of retinal progenitor cells. The signal transduction pathway and developmental profile of the Ca(2+) response to LPA were the same as those of the Ca(2+) response to adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which enhances the proliferation of retinal progenitor cells. The coapplication of LPA with ATP resulted in enhancement of Ca(2+) rise in the E3 chick retina. Our results show that LPA induces Ca(2+) mobilization in the embryonic chick retina during neurogenesis.
